this is entirely unprompted on your end, but i love your darcy and faramir takes and wanted to get your opinion on aragorn/faramir as a ship.

i'm salivating over it and nobody. cares. but i just love how it can show the possibilities of book faramir being a "threat" to aragorn's kingship in a way that nobody else is...how they can relate through their shared ancestry but the entirely different ways it impacted them in their respective lives - something about aragorn being the heir of isildur, growing up surrounded by elves, arnor. something about faramir being distinctly aware of the legacy of the stewards, his numenorean heritage and how it's fading away in the world of men, gondor (my fav world in lotr, you are so under-appreciated, gondor.) i personally adhere to the stewards-were-most-likely-also-royalty headcanon because of that extra juicy tension. throw in the i-knew-your-father-as-a-young-man aspect, the whole steward-quite-literally-serving-in-wait-of-the-true-king aspect? it's everything.

i dunno. the natural cause and effect of "return of the king" & "departure of the steward" is so interesting to play with in a romantic context, especially if it keeps both of them in the limelight when naturally, it should only be one of them? i think it's the aragorn ship that pushes his character and ambition the most, and in the same way, it can push faramir to show more machiavellian traits, more of him utilizing his political power and/or personal strengths. especially since his canonical fate is extremely satisfying but also...very conclusively an *ending* if that makes sense.

i might just want to see faramir clashing with aragorn wanting to wage more war. let him cook! let the man speak about "queen among other queens: not a mistress of many slaves"!!!!

also must admit that it's my contrarian ass wanting to rebel against the fanon "aragorn never ever wanted to be king" + "faramir is a pathetic meow meow" headcanons. the existing faramir x aragorn fics i've read all adhere to it which is frustrating.

anyways, any thoughts on this ship i randomly latched on to?

Anon, this is my #1 Tolkien ship and actually one of the only m/m ships I've ever been super into. I used to guiltily sneak-read Aragorn/Faramir as a teenager because I grew up in a conservative community and hadn't come to terms with my own queerness at the time, and was still figuring out how to get by in that community just as a Democrat, much less a lesbian.

Anyway, I got a huge kick out of your ask because it's basically point-for-point my own feelings about them. If you haven't seen it, I even wrote a ship manifesto for them over ten years ago.

And unfortunately I do also agree that the (very PJ film-inflected) fanons around both characters have made it very difficult to find fic for the ship that isn't deeply OOC for the original versions of the characters (tbh the last time I looked, it was hard enough to even find F/A fics where Faramir had black hair, much less his deeper canon characteristics). Add in the fanon depictions of Gondor and the Stewardship, and a lot of what appeals about the pairing is lost for me. I read some good ones a longggg time ago, but wouldn't begin to know where to find them now.

(I know I should be the change I want to see and write some myself, but apart from the AU f/f and m/f/f versions, I think the closest I ever came to it was this post about a mostly-the-same-as-LOTR AU only with Faramir/Aragorn and this feeling explosion about "Faramir actually does accepts the dream-visions obviously intending him to be the one going to Rivendell but also it's Faramir/Aragorn.")

university modern au aragorn x boromir & legolas x gimli headcanons

Aragorn and Boromir are renting together a small and kinda shitty flat

Faramir lives with them like 5 out of 7 days a week or more, sometimes at Theoden’s place as well with Eomer and Eowyn

Let’s just say the brothers don’t like Denethor and it’s a shitty life but at least they love each other right?

Boromir works at a coffee shop after classes, and sometimes does nights at Gimli’s bar

Btw Gimli is a drop out who opened a bar and is dating Aragorn’s uni friend Legolas

Elrond is the one renting them the shitty flat

So it’s not rly shitty, it’s nice they are just broke

Elrond is still Aragorn’s foster dad, and Arwen lives near them and is absolutely purest best soul alive

Aragorn smokes weed

Boromir doesn’t

Until he does one time, he says it was weird but also would do it again with Aragorn

He smokes regular cigarettes tho, like a lot

Boromir is a whiskey person, Aragorn is a wine person

Gimli is a beer person

Legolas just likes to drink (also wine person)

Legolas and Aragorn like to do sleepovers with a lot of wine and gossips, they paint each others nails and watch stupid shit on tv

And Gimli and Boromir drink together after the bar is close

Before you freak out, yes, it's slash (Boromir/Aragorn with past Boromir/Theodred), but nothing explicit happens AND it focuses a lot on Boromir's declining mental health.

You rest your head on his shoulder, content to watch the sunlight catch his hair as the subtle breeze lifts it. He flashes you a warm smile when he catches you looking, and you blush.

"…I could run away to Eriador." he murmurs against your skin. You can feel your heart shatter in your chest as you gently squeeze his hand, shaking your head.

"You cannot, for you would regret it."

Boromir makes an indignant noise at the suggestion and you shush him.

"You know I am right. You love Gondor, and for good reason. We might be happy, but some part of you would always regret your choice to turn away from your homeland. Perhaps, in time, you might even come to resent me for luring you astray. I would have you remember me fondly, love, though we met only briefly."

Fortunately for you, you were raised in the North Downs. You catch Faramir’s chin, turning his face towards you so you might press a quick kiss to the curve of his nose.

“What was that for?” Faramir asks, cheeks dusted pink.

“I find you handsome.” you answer, glad to see Faramir’s expression relax into a smile to match your own.

covet (7/7): personal favorite i think, post-botfa thorin recovering from both physical injuries and goldsickness that is exacerbated by thranduil being. you know, thranduil.

strange things happen for no reason (1/1): frodo is orphaned as an infant and bilbo rescues him at the cost of Having A Baby Now. thorin is plussed about it.

peredhel in name (1/1): just a soft aramir oneshot with aragorn being a dork and boromir being cute and adorable because i can write whatever i want using the power of imagination.

wake up with the purest sense of being (1/1): this is a sequel fic to my fae!au bagginshield thingy, it’s uh. just porn. so, you know. yeah. BUT i really like it i think it’s very sweet and one of my better-written pieces so it has a place here

Oh dear, making me think this one through. I actually struggle with this because I don't know if it's my favorite because I legitimately enjoyed creating it more than other fics, or if it's my favorite because it's a fan favorite and I'm obligated.😆But I think...these are my actually 5 favorite fics (in no particular order...I lied, it's alphabetical).

Ambassador to Madness (5/?)-  All Bilbo wanted was to be an ambassador to one of the richest kingdoms in Middle Earth. Upon meeting its prince, Bilbo finds himself agreeing to play the part of his consort to help free Erebor from the gold mad Thror. 

A Lesson Carved in Stone- Fili and Kili have been a little much lately. Their latest escapade: damaging the newly rebuilt Upper Markets that were scheduled to be unveiled to the public that night. However, uncovering Mahal’s Anvil seems to be the answer to all their problems…until it turns their hobbit uncle to stone.

One More Little Adventure (6/6)-  Bilbo is wondering whether remaining in Erebor is the right decision anymore, and a misunderstanding with Thorin solidifies his choice in leaving. However, Bilbo’s acorn he picked up from Beorn’s garden takes matters into its own hands and shrinks the both of them. 

A Smile for a Cold Spoon- Thorin was blessed with two Callings, but they both are ‘Cold’ meaning it only invokes anger, sadness, regret, etc. All he wants is one chance to make someone feel something 'Warm’. He never thought he would get the chance, until a hobbit passes by his stand and smiles.

The Twelve Transformations of Bilbo Baggins (2/?)-  Finding what he deemed as a puzzle box in the trolls’ hoard, Bilbo is subjected to twelve magical transformations all of different duration and abilities. Getting the dwarves to Erebor might not be as easy as he thought.

Boromir is secretly a great artist, especially great with paints

Aragorn plays acoustic guitar

And he let Boromir paint something on it

He also plays ukulele

They never bought a proper bed, they sleep on the mattress on the floor and refuse to have it any other way

Aragorn has a lot of plants

Boromir has one, he almost killed it like a hundred times

Aragorn smokes cigarettes that he rolls himself

Aragorn can never get enough sleep, and Boromir is basically forcing him to go to sleep and not sit on the balcony with a book and a cigarette until morning

Also Aragorn talks in his sleep in every language he speaks

Boromir finds it hilarious

Okay but just imagine university au aragorn x boromir but it is something like

Aragorn: straight a student without even trying that much, wears this hippie aesthetic, reads poetry but in this very chaotic way, plays guitar and writes his own songs

Boromir: the struggle is real and it’s there and oh fuck this handsome guitar guy, so flawless it hurts physically at this point

And in my mind they both study history and both do some kind of sport idk what yet. And they meet just by accident in library for example and boromir is like yeah he’s not that bad, still very hot. And then they talk and turns out aragorn actually thought boromir might be cool but he just couldn’t be bothered enough to talk to him, u know he was busy AND THEN we get my fav strangers to friends to friends with benefits to lovers scheme and I AM LIVING FOR IT.

And I would be very happy to elaborate on that and yes I am writing this shit tonight 😭
