Actually, thinking about ableism and the chronic pain essay link I just posted made me think about Rachael Sterling's latest essay about Dame Diana's last days, and about how Diana found it humiliating to need help with a lot of basic stuff.
And I just gotta say: Diana, and all of us, have been so incredibly badly served by our ableist society that treats basic human functions as inherently "dirty" or "gross," and our ableist society that treats needing help with those functions as shameful.
The vast majority of humans who live past a certain age almost certainly will become disabled at some point before they die. This disability may entail the need for help with hygeine and toileting and other bodily functions.
I therefore am here to tell you that
it is not shameful to need help caring for your hair
it is not shameful to need help caring for your teeth
it is not shameful to need help bathing
it is not shameful to need help with toileting
it is not shameful to need help with eating and drinking
your body, in whatever shape it finds itself, is good and right and beautiful and is worthy of being helped and loved and fed and clean
I only wish that Dame Diana had known this; it would have saved her a lot of emotional pain at the most difficult time of her entire life.
And no, I'm not blaming Diana for how she felt, like, at all. She was a victim of an ableist society, one that told her that needing help with these things is humiliating. She was done a grave disservice by her culture. We've all been done that disservice. But we can change things. We can do better.

just saw multiple people asking in the comments of a post if they can use and wear a carabiner for their keys if they're bi or otherwise not a lesbian and I simply have to ask if people know that carabiners are used for many purposes beyond signaling lesbianism. like girl they were invented in the early modern period for their functional use as a clasp it's not like they're some closed lesbian practice......

In love with this random guy who had a lock slapped on his storage unit for not paying its rental and not only did he ignore management and took his stuff out without paying, but also chose to steal the lock itself and send it to the LockPickingLawyer along with a confession letter

I think we should write more straight relationships with 2010s TV queerbait tactics. Let that man and that woman's lives be horribly intertwined, let them take bullets for the other, let them be each other's meaning but NO KISSING. They are holding each other platonically. You're crazy for reading anything romantic into it at all tbh

There is some pretty shocking footage out there of the Baltimore bridge collapse early this morning. I've already seen some incredibly wrong, incredibly insensitive Hot Takes about how shitty the bridge was to have fallen after being bonked by a boat, etc
Please don't be that person.
The facts will come out. Speculation is silly. In addition to loss of life, the Francis Scott Key bridge was a major arterial in that region's highway system. Its loss will be felt for years, and not just to daily commuters.
Baltimore harbor is closed. No shipping at all. This will impact supply chains in ways we cannot even assess yet.
It's pretty fucked up.
