I think I would actually like My Hero Academia if Deku had never got powers and instead proved that he could be a hero anyway. This way he would be a good metaphor and role model for disabled kids (specially the japonese ones).
Instead he getting the greatest better powers accidentaly ends up only confirming the bases of an already capacistist and honestly eugenist society. And that sucks.
And look I have no problem with disabled characthers that get enhancements. I like Cyborg (though his enhancements aren't problematic because he was never presented as a disabled characther, his robot parts are about identity, trust and mental health) and I do think Edward Elric is actually a good portray of disability (yes he had a badass prostetic but it breaks, it needs climate adaptability, it needs regular check ups, he has phatom pains and he doesn't recover his limbs by the end and this is still sawn as a happy end because the end goal was to help Alphonse, his disability was never saw as something stopping him or making him less). Now as someone who doesn't have phisical disability and can mask pretty well I won't pretend to be a specialist on the subject. So maybe this two ARE bad depictions.
That being said the fact Izuku's case still is upsetting for me should saw something about how obvious it is.
P.S: I'm not saying the show is bad or that people shouldn't watch the show. To be honest I don't even think the author considered the ableist implications. He was just having fun.
I know disabled people who like it. And I used to like it. And it's okay. Is a fun show (Mineta apart). I'm only saying that because I think talking about problematic aspects of media can help people who write stories to not repeat them. Also other people probably expressed that WAAAY better than me.

Standard shonen endings have rotted some people's brains. I've seen so many dudebros disappointed that Izuku didn't at the very least "bag his girl" as some sort of reparation for losing his quirk. And so much Ochako slander for "ghosting" Izuku for 8 years for being quirkless (not true btw, leak mistranlastion) because she wasn't explicitly Izuku's endgame love interest in typical shonen fashion. I even saw a tweet doing crazy numbers (70k+ likes) suggesting that Izuku should've gotten with Hatsume because at least she spent 8 years working on his suit....? Ask yourself why you feel like Izuku needed a canon love interest post-time skip to be happy. And then ask yourself why you hate women and view them as the MC's "much-deserved" reward for saving the day.

Iida just never stops being funny to me. In episode 123, when asked why he was tagging along with the heroes running to support in the fight against Shigaraki, despite not having a flying quirk, he legitimately responds with, “two of those students in the fight are my treasured, cherished friends. The other one is Bakugou”

those my hero academia fans mad that the shounen hero manga is about shounen heroes and not romance (they use izuku as a self-insert) (theyre losers) (they lack media literacy and think that a girl having a freshman year crush means they have to get together by the end)

Sometimes, I forget that there are people who find protagonists like Izuku, Tanjiro and Yuji "boring" because "they exhibit typical shonen protagonist traits" and one of them woukd be "They're nice, they're kind, they're all sunshine".
Which, okay, have your tastes, that's fine.
But when it comes to characters who are kind and/or nice, there's layers to them.
Just because a character is nice, doesn't mean they're kind and vice versa.
A character can be the most evil one in that story and still show kindness to some people somehow. A nice character may be the one to do immoral things, Yuji being an example.
The reasons for why a character is nice and/or kind varies, too.
Some are just genuinely born that one. Some may be selective as to who they show those sides, too, because of their own morality. Maybe, a character is being kind or nice to also manipulate others. Some characters may choose to be kind because who will, despite the cruelty of the world?
Also, I feel like, even with people outside of a fandom, they hear or seen a character being nice and kind, they just stop at that and don't think they're capable of being ruthless.
Like, Tanjiro canonically has a pure soul, but multiple times he has shown he is not only a menace in a fight, but he has shown to be one in casual situations. Sometimes, he's not even aware he is because he is so nice.
Izuku, he's a sweetheart, too. But even he will just shut off that "sunshine" to literally tear into you. He has been told in canon to hold back his emotions, the most prominent one being his anger. When he's angry, go apologize!
Yuji, look, let's be real... he is sunshine and rainbows, but that boy is probably the least sweetest one out of these three examples. Hold back? Yuji don't know what that is. No, no, he really don't. I kid you not, this kid doesn't. You can't even use the fight against Junpei as one because he punched Junpei UP into a window. Had Junpei not have that shikigami, he would have gotten major injuries.
My point is!
Just because a character is kind or nice or both, it doesn't mean...
A) it's the only trait they have.
B) they're not capable of not being kind or nice.
I think some see nice and kind and associate it with being "soft" in a derogatory manner.
Which, first off, there's nothing wrong with being soft.
I'll be honest, it will sound silly (go ahead and laugh actually, I encourage it), but if you asked put a character like one of the mentioned protagonists in front of me along with their villain and asked me "who I'm more scared of" I'm pointing at the protagonist.
Listen to me. Don't let that cuteness fool you.
With a villain, I am well aware of that villain being evil and will hurt me no matter what I do.
With someone like Yuji or Tanjiro or Izuku, they look nice, they look kind but it's like you have to be careful to not to trigger them in a way to set them off. You're caught off guard but those sweet faces and then next thing you know, BOOM! You got knocked out.
If anything, as much as people like to clown on these characters, they're only just following the footsteps of the ones before them.
Just like those legends, they started from the bottom and grew stronger over time and even with being a chill person or don't want to do evil, that doesn't exempt them from being not "a sweetheart".
I said it before, but a sunshine character to me is a character who is warm but lethal, like sunlight.

ik it's just homophobia at work, but something that's always puzzled + bugged me is when fans can't apply the real-life complexities of romance, sexuality, and identity to fictional romance. I'll see a well-thought out analysis of how Ochako or Izuku are great examples of comphet, for example, and all of a sudden here comes a pack of dudebros shouting "MHA fans don't know how to read OCHAKO CANONICALLY LIKES MEN! IZUKU BLUSHES AROUND GIRLS! THEY ARE STRAIGHT!" from the rooftops....like.....okay? Should we clap? It's the same spirit that drives antis to rush to social media to say "bkdk and togachako are dead I prayed for times like these" instead of just enjoying their own ship 💀
It's "sexuality can be fluid and sometimes your understanding of the attraction you experience (or don't) changes over time and that's okay!" Unless, of course, you're talking about [insert character here who must be straight because it kinda seemed like it in these three panels from four years ago~] Like oh brother, give it a rest.
Again, there's nothing wrong w/ disagreeing with headcanons like these!! You might think, "well, I actually think Ochako's crush on Izuku is genuine and that they would make a cute couple!" That's great, love! Ship to your heart's content! My issue is when people act like any interpretations aside from heterosexuality are insane and the product of some inability to understand the source material. Especially when it doesn't affect your individual hcs or enjoyment of the series at all? And especially when most of these headcanons often come from actual queer fans seeing their experiences in these characters' journeys.
