Originality: Fanfiction, Genre, Trope

So I wasn't going to post this anywhere ever, but I saw a post that made me angry so now the internet, and my one follower, get my essay on Fanfiction. I wrote it for a class, in case the sectioning is a bit weird, but it is a piece of writing I'm proud of. I have an annotated bibliography I will post separately. A different title that didn't make it to the final report:

I started reading at around the age of 5, and I loved it. I was one of the kids that actively went to look at the books in the book cubbies of the classroom during free time, and once I was good enough at reading, I began tearing through the series I had available. Magic Treehouse, Boxcar Children, fairy tales, books on horses, cats, dogs. My parents wanted my siblings and I to always be able to have the books we liked available to us to encourage reading practice, so my dad made us all personal bookshelves and out of necessity, I ended up with the largest one. In elementary school, I chafed against the 3 books a week checkout policy. In middle school and early high school, with my limit removed, I would check out as many as 15 (my record) books at a time. My backpack rarely went a day without having at least one book inside. When I was still a preteen, my parents tried to encourage us to read critically one summer by offering to pay us for book reports, and I went ahead and read my assigned book and two more, hiding myself in my closet for a day to read all the way through Eragon. I would take free books home to the point that my personal bookshelf was often double stacked. All that is to say that I have always really loved reading. So when a friend showed me a site that allowed me to read hundreds or thousands of stories about characters I already liked, that I could access anywhere through my phone, I fell head first into the world of fanfiction readers.

When a reader begins, they're given books with simple words. The books tend to have consistent vowel sounds, and use basic words from everyday life. If they learn the written language early in life, odds are they never felt the need to seek out a greater variety of literature at that point in time. Books were basic fictional stories that taught how the lines on the page turned into communication. It's only once the basics are established that a learner can start to read for themselves. Fast forward a couple years and with a solid foundation of vocabulary, a reader can begin to have choice in what they read. One of the earliest classifications for literature that a reader gets is genre. Even books built for kids can range from the fantastical, like the Magic Treehouse series, to nonfictional books about animals, space, and history. As the years stack and a child reads more and more, they will begin to both notice and be taught about patterns. Even without knowing the labels, humans are used to pattern recognition, and as Thomas C. Foster put it, “Part of pattern recognition is talent, but a whole lot is practice: if you read enough and give what you read enough thought, you begin to see patterns, archetypes, recurrences”(Foster 29). The classroom and experience show similarities in story structure like the Hero’s Journey model, in characters like the tragic hero, and in story elements like a dragon fight to save a damsel.  At the point where a reader can recognize similarities, they can identify the types of stories they like, by genre, archetypes, tropes etc. Generally, people have a type of story that they like best, and shared qualities between two stories are attractive. A reader turned writer may like an idea, and want to put their own spin on it. The “what if” is the basis of all new stories. Foster, summarizing Northrop Frye, asserted that, “Literature…grows out of other literature; we should not be surprised to find, then, that it also looks like other literature”(Foster 29). In a world of literary repetition, what is originality? And in turn, what does that mean about fanfiction?

Following Frye’s line of reasoning, Foster concludes a very bold idea: “there’s no wholly original work of literature”(Foster 29). Yet contrarily, he goes on to explain that one of his favorite novels contains multiple recognizable archetypes and story elements, and called it “wildly original”(Foster 29), very intentionally using the word original once again. Those two statements seem to contradict themselves, but he draws the line at the combination of the familiar into something different from any piece on its own. My personal belief is that original literature, mixed from familiar traits like genre and trope, is spawned from the onset of the author asking the question “what if?”. We both agree that external inspiration does not deny creativity.

Genre

It’s not uncommon to ask someone their favorite genre. Most readers have a favorite genre, or at least a top two or three. It’s also not uncommon for genres to coexist in a piece: A high fantasy story can have a romantic subplot, a science fiction tale can have undertones of tragedy, and an autobiography can focus on the comedic parts of life. Introducing an element from another genre can be a strategy to keep an audience engaged, a way to fill time, or a side effect of a kind of world building. Fantasy, scifi, autobiography, romance, tragedy, comedy, mystery, westerns, horror, realistic fiction, and more are all considered genres of prose by at least some portion of the population. There are genres for nearly every kind of written work imaginable. There are letters for business, condolence, between friends, there are applications for jobs, schools, grants, and many variations of poetry. Beyond “types of things,” what is genre, and what does it have to do with originality?

Like how there is no singular list of major genres, there is not really a strong definition of genre that. In an article for “The Kenyon Review”, Northrop Frye grappled with two diametric definitions of genre, one being that it precurses and is “independent of creation” and the other being that genre is that it is born of and reliant upon the genesis and comparison of new works (Frye 8). His ultimate conclusions are that genres come from archetypes, and that “all literary genres are derived from the quest-myth” (Frye 15). Though he never says it explicitly, it can be derived from his statements that genre is related generally to content of works. The researcher David Chandler agreed with Frye on the difficulty in defining genre, stating that “Specific genres tend to be easy to recognize intuitively but difficult (if not impossible) to define”(Chandler 2). He goes on to say genres exist because classifications are necessary to make distinctions and descriptions, but that genre is not a static concept, something closer to a negotiation between the culture and the idea of it. He specifically notes that “Each new work within a genre has the potential to influence changes within the genre or perhaps the emergence of new sub-genres (which may later blossom into fully-fledged genres)”(Chandler 3). 

Suffice it to say, giving completely rigid definitions for genres does not work forever. Like with teaching metaphors, they work at a specific moment in time, but they might lack details, or be slightly incorrect, because the goal is to impart a main point rather than act as a perfect mapping of an idea. What can be said about genre is that it “provides an important frame of reference which helps readers to identify, select and interpret texts”(Chandler 7), and, in a later section about taxonomies of genre in film, indicates that similarities within a genre may be related to narrative, characterization, basic themes, setting, and iconography(Chandler 13). A loose definition can be drawn then, that literary genres are generally larger scale classifications of writing that involve the content of the text, useful for helping readers interact with the text for lower effort.

Due to genre being a wider classification of literature, it is not inherent that shared genre indicates a lack of original content. Conversely, because a genre tends to share enough content elements that by simply knowing the genre the reader understands parts of the book, genre forces some degree of shared features. Though not his intent, Chandler does address the mix of the two ideas, “while writing within a genre involves making use of certain 'given' conventions, every work within a genre also involves the

invention of some new elements"(Chandler 6). Though genre necessitates similarity, it does not inherently necessitate sameness.

Trope

Like every other literary happening, most people encounter tropes regularly, even if they are not always identified. They can span genres, or largely exist within one. Examples include found family, the wise mentor, friends to lovers, other worlds, the chosen one, and long journeys. They can act as a draw, a dissuasion or a cue to readers for what may lie in store. They exist normally, in altered form, in parodied form and more.

Trope mimics genre in the issue of varying definitions in different spaces, but because it is a “smaller” concept, it is a little easier. Speaking from the view of literary YouTube space, the content creator Merphy Napier identified trope as ”a literary pattern that gets used often enough that readers obviously, clearly, and quickly recognize it and generally know what they’re in for” (1:10 - 1:22). This is, again,  very similar in concept to genre, and for good reason: both need to be able to be used for clarification. Trope is, however, tied more closely to the story than genre is. Napier, later in the video, says that “All books either have tropes as the baseline of their story or as certain elements within the story. And what the author does to them to make them unique to that author, unique to that story, unique to those characters is what makes those books great” (7:42-7:55). Throughout the video essay, many examples pop up, namely characters, relationships, plot points, and setting, all of which fall under possible classifiers of genre. The general understanding that tropes are smaller scale classifications yet very similar to genre is well demonstrated by one of Napier’s examples: ”There are also certain genres that rely on tropes as their very definition. Time portal fantasy needs [time portals] to exist. If someone writes a time portal fantasy that doesn’t have the main element in it, the trope, this is bad” (4:05- 4:23). Overall, trope emerges as a smaller, similar structure to genre, though one a bit more story-centric.

Like with genre and exemplified in the second Napier quote, tropes are just a sum of a whole. They can be vital to a story, but there is always more. It should be said though, that most of the time, when people call a story unoriginal, it comes from the perception that too many genres and tropes are shared between two works- it is never just one or two. Because genre and trope necessitate similarity, the more shared genres and tropes, the more similarities are also shared. Thus, it is fair to say that two pieces of writing with enough shared tropes and genre seem unoriginal. Typically, when people do bring this up, it is due to a cause and effect- one story becomes popular and other writers jump on the bandwagon, writing similar stories in response to the popularized one. This explosion of subsequent stories is what generally leads a trope to be called overdone, and a story unoriginal. While there is merit in saying that in these cases the trope is no longer new, “overdone” is an opinion, based on the amount a reader is willing to read that trope (8:35 - 10:40).

Fanfiction

If someone spends a certain amount of time engaging with the internet, they likely hear about or see fanfiction in one of its variant forms. Though some sites are more popular than others, fanfiction, called fanfics or even just fics, exists in a variety of spaces in a variety of forms. “Household name” sites for the written format include Archive of Our Own(AO3), Wattpad, Tumblr, and Fanfiction.net (ff.net), but podfics (fics of the audio variety) can be found on Youtube, and threadfics- fics written with the thread function of social media posts to get past the character limits -get written every day on Twitter. The average reader finds their way into the fanfic space by first finding the community writing, drawing, and generally creating or engaging with the content of a published media, known as the fandom. 

Though fanfiction is sometimes called a genre, it varies in definition according to the context. The most basic definition is that fanfictions are “fictional works based on a work the author liked.” The meaning it carries in casual use is that fanfics are unmonetized, fan-made pieces of writing that are shared in an online space, generally designated for such writing. For example, fiction written by fans of Disney’s “Encanto” or the anime “My Hero Academia” would be called fanfiction, because of their format and the fact that they cannot be monetized without breaking copyright. However, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is not called fanfiction, because it is a published piece of work, based on a piece of literature whose copyright has already expired. Once again, there is more than one definition, and in this case, finding a middle ground cannot encapsulate everything. 

Fanfiction is a genre in that knowing a work is fanfiction can provide some expectations of what the story may contain, but fanfiction is a direct effect of other media, and while it is a type of fiction, it is larger than most genres are individually. The second definition may be correct by denotation, but it is not what people mean in conversation unless they want to imply even certain well known works like The Aeneid and fairytale retellings count as fanfiction. The third definition opposes the second, and even then it misses information. In her thesis, Katharine McCain, quoting Katherine Morrissey questions, ““How do we attempt to process a concept that is simultaneously claimed as an activity, an identity, and a connection to others?”(McCain 13). Fanfiction, as a concept, is too big. Fanfiction as a genre is inconsistent within itself, like every other genre. The definition of fanfiction, as it is used in conversation, misses the community that built and change the culture and practices. 

However, even if it cannot receive a codified definition, modern fanfiction can be described by some of its key characteristics. McCain identifies her subject as “a particular type of fanfiction—one that is becoming more and more prevalent among fans and acafans alike: a fanfiction defined primarily by its communal nature, its reliance on the Internet, and its desire to combine the creative with the critical”(McCain 13). Looking at this through the lens of AO3, the internet enables quick access and easy communication. An author may start a work and draw inspiration from the comments left on the works, as most writers of multichaptered works do not have everything written when they start to post. A common practice is writing fanfiction inspired by other fanfiction, as pictured above, which is born of the common attitude, “___ idea was good/bad, but what if.” Taking an aspect of a story, often a trope, and tearing it apart then putting it back together is the fandom way, and occurs both with canonical content(from the original source material, and also called canon) and fanonical content (based on a general consensus within a fandom- generally on what should have happened- and also called fanon).

With that in mind, McCain’s four main characteristics of fanfiction are the sharing and overlapping of content, common language and medium, “bad” writing, and the overlap of the creative and the critical. (McCain 15,16) The first and fourth aspect are both heavily tied to fanon and canon, the former referring mostly to the chain of inspiration from the source to a writer to other writers, and the latter referring to the practice of asking “what if” in creation. The second and third aspect both refer to the largely unmoderated nature of the fandom. Fanfiction spaces are always inventing, and are unrestricted by published work conventions. Regarding the second aspect, new terms are invented and propagated within fandoms to communicate the new ideas they generate. Fans describe genres and tropes alike as “alternate universes(AUs)” if they are not present in canon, for example fantasy AUs or Coffee Shop AUs. Formatting also varies greatly from fic to fic, as authors are free to format their story with any format they can create, and often will make specific choices to impart certain ideas or feelings on their readers. For example, keeping everything in lowercase can be used to make the reader feel like something is off, or slightly incomprehensible. The third aspect largely refers to Sturgeon's Law, a term derived from Sturgeon's Revelation, and imparts the idea that “90% of everything is crap.” Fanfiction can be written by anyone, and requires no editor to be published. Naturally, every level of content emerges for viewing- there are only filters when the author employs them themselves. 

Fanfiction is very blatantly unoriginal by most standards. It makes use of characters, settings, and tropes that can be directly traced to a source material. One writer, Patricia C. Wrede comments on her blog that “Fanfiction, as I have pointed out elsewhere, can be looked at as a sort of map of various alternate routes through the implied decision tree that the original writer used. The whole point is that it’s not purely original in itself; it has to have something to be an alternative to, or an expansion of”(Wrede, “Wrede on Writing”). An important note is on the wording “purely original.” Throughout the article, she agrees with the points of Frye and Foster, that near everything in existence draws from something else. Paired with my opinion that originality (not pure or true originality, just uniqueness) is spawned from the “what if,” this could mean that near everything has equal potential to be considered original or unoriginal. Genre and trope commonalities may have weigh-in as to the amount of uniquity in a work, but if hardly anything is “purely original,” there should not be a gold standard with which to punish other literature.

  As a final note on originality, it is important to note that even though originality is idealized, what matters most in a story is that it entertains its audience. It can contribute to that enjoyment, but as Wrede puts it, ”Originality is not the be-all and end-all of literary quality; it is simply one of the many and several ingredients that writers use to create stories.”(Wrede, “Wrede on Writing”).

Beginning to read fanfiction was a massive change to my life, but not in terms of type of content, or quantity. My main genre is still fantasy, and any drop in quality I attribute to Sturgeon's Law, as without the levels of review that published works receive, every level of writing makes it to visibility. Rather, it greatly increased the accessibility of reading. I no longer had to carry around books to everywhere I went, I could bring a phone or a tablet and with all my downloaded stories, I could have a much greater amount of readable content for much less to carry with me. For example, on family car trips I was capped at bringing more than 4 or 5 books to avoid taking up too much space. After I burned through them all, I would have to find books from whoever’s house we visited, hunt someone down to play cards, or set up a movie player. Fanfiction, existing in the online space or in the downloads of an electronic device, meant I could bypass the space limit, and, should the mood strike me, read near indefinitely. And I do read near constantly- waking up in the morning, between classes, while waiting, in my free time, in the bath, during breaks in schoolwork, when I really should be doing work, before bed, in bed, and possibly more. Some days I read a total word count greater than any individual Harry Potter book (the longest one is 257 thousand words). I did similar things before fanfiction, sometimes a book or two a day, but now I can read it anywhere, anytime.

Being a fanfiction reader means that for any popular media, I can typically find a story with my favorite character. It means that for any less popular media sources, I reread fics over and over, and lament the lack of a large pool of writers while bookmarking the works of my favorite authors and subscribing to their accounts, their series, and their works to catch everything they make. It means checking my email every day to see if any stories I read have a new chapter, and deciding between reading those chapters, if I remember the story, or ignoring them, waiting for the fic to be completed before reading it all at once. It means filtering out story elements, ships, or tags I don’t like, and reading the tags if I don’t, and even still stumbling upon something I didn’t want to read. It means reading vastly more than my mom, but still being told I need to read more “real” books and stories. It means walking around with downloads that make up days of reading available at any time, and that collection still not even coming close to my bookmarks count. It means having an account that some swear is the most personal thing they own, saying they’ll take their account information to the grave. It sometimes means loving and hating my fandom’s community in equal measure, and choosing to read on or leave based on prevailing feelings. It means loving characters or settings or worlds powerfully enough to read and read and read and read and only stop by the limits of the fandom size and my willingness to change my standards. 

The closest word to the love of reading is bibliophilia, or the love of reading/collecting books, but while I do love reading books still, I think I’m closer to a lover of stories. I could never read forever, as it is not where I find fulfillment, but it is where I find joy. I read everywhere all the time using my phone, from one of my dozens of open AO3 tabs or hundreds of downloaded fics. Nothing is entirely original, but it doesn’t need to be. I filter to my tastes and set myself loose, because I love reading fanfiction.

AnS Role Swap AU by @owlsshadows​ Rated M This series has it all. Shirayuki as an assassin. Obi as both a royal bastard and a pharmacist. A mysterious meeting out in the woods where it makes you question whether Nanaki and Obi are two different people or the same. Also Zen having some very conflicted feelings regarding his royal authority and how he can choose to handle rejection.

Blizzard by @nebluus​ Rated T This is one of the earliest fics I read in this fandom and it remains to date one of my absolute favorites. Obi gets hurt protecting his Miss and a blizzard rolls in. Thankfully they find a cabin where Obi, who is definitely on his death bed if no one finds them and SOON, proceeds to still fuss over his Miss. Best scene: When he warms her hands with his. Also the second chapter is all sorts of delightful domesticity I IMPLORE you to please read it and soon.

However the real selling point here, if you didn’t know, is Lord Seiran. He is a delightfully eccentric billionaire who clearly always wanted a large family, judging from how easily he fills out the adoption paperwork.

If you go into the comments, I have a couple of pages worth of reasons why I love this AU, but what I appreciate even more is how you have an absolutely perfect oneshot in this fic. It is a well-translated universe where we get a delightful clear, beginning, middle, and end, all in 5k. NOT an easy feat. Please enjoy.

Unnamed Long Term Comic: A story about a space girl with wings, a nonbinary person that can shapeshift and communicate with animals, twins with water and plant powers, and an angsty wholesome skeleton bean. No plot yet. (long term)

“Orphan Dog” and “Martha’s Pack” An orphan finds out she can talk to dogs and realizes they are the key to finding her missing parents. (Wrote when I was 8, rewrote partially when I was 13. So very cheezy. Would be even cheezier if I didn’t rewrite it, but still drew quality serious art XD.)

“The Agency” A girl named Jill has secrets. Major secrets. For one, she can turn into any animal at will including extinct, Fantasy, or hybrids. Don’t forget that she can also turn invisible and do telepathy. (Not to mention she runs an entire secret animal spy community…) When her best friend and spy ally, Izabella the opossum, goes missing, she must find what it means to be a true friend and showing that it’s what’s inside that counts. (Actually liked this one too. Even if it’s also cheezy.)

1. “Moos” A boy is adopted by cows and is granted the power to understand animals and turn into a cow.

2. “Moos: Vile Meat” Hoover is back and he must defeat the evil Haystack, a human entrapping calfs in little domes for eternity.

3. “Moos: Cold Cuts” Hoover finds a new ally, one who creates...snow?

4. “Moos: Wakey Wakey Eggs and Bakey” Haystack is back and Hoover and his friends must defeat him before he turns all pigs into stone. (Cheezy series?)

“Extraordinaries” Emma, her friend, Millie, her brother, Clark, and her dog, Charlie, have to travel to a faraway land to save Emma’s mother, who has been poisoned. Along the way Emma and the team must find how to deal with their newfound powers of Imagination. (This one was also pretty good! A story from Nanowrimo a few years ago.)

“The Hummingbird Did It” A hummingbird turns a lazy boy into a dog. The boy must venture across country to find the cure. (Was kinda boring and just me having fun with google maps lol.)

“Sunshine and Rainbows” A girl is taken to another world by rainbow dust and must find her way back to Earth. (Can’t actually remember this one.)

“Nature’s Lifeforce” A boy and girl are given the power to turn into any woodland creature and talk to trees. (Also can’t remember, but sounds cool.)

“Ravens” A girl named Hannah, a boy named Billy, a boy named Cameron, a girl named Lyla, and a boy named Clark, among other students, have their wishes come true. This creates a problem as Cameron becomes a dog, Lyla becomes a cat and Hannah and Billy become ravens. They fix the problem for everyone except Hannah and Billy, but embark on an adventure to find the scientist who can help them. (Based on a dream, I think.)

“Dragon wings” Hiccup and Toothless accidentally sit down someplace weird. They switch bodies and Toothless claims to have heard someone press a button. (ASDFGHJKL WHAT?! HTTYD short story)

“Melody Dreambubble” A weird new pony arrives in Ponyville. Twilight is curious to find that she has no Cutie Mark, was raised by wolves, and bears mysterious powers. (My Little Pony, kinda self insert, short story)

“Eyes of Gold/The Tower” A Fan Fiction based on The Ever Afters series and two stories rolled into one. Rory finds that her two best friends have been poisoned by a new dragon species/As Rory is about to enter a tower to save Chase a random girl shows up out of nowhere and has a weird habit of annoying Adelaide. (Was my first ever self insert? And based on a book series unlike the rest? Cool! Oh I even wrote ten whole pages! Neat. Featuring a girl chasing a dragon with a bedpan!)

“Roadkill” A man purposely runs over a deer on a freeway. The deer’s best friend curses the man, later to regret it because he has to undo the curse himself. (Lol, this was interesting.)

“Melissa and Steven Started a Food Fight” A completely random book that takes the characters through an adventure of explosions, unicorns, and talking squirrels. (Used a random prompt generator. Very random. And funny.)

“Before it’s Gone” A snooty teen crashes in her car and finds a surprise when she wakes up. (Oh yeah, another old story. She turned into a dog and none of the other dogs believed her.)

“The Unicorn Killer” A short story about poachers and Julia. (Yep. Short story.)

1. “Feathers of Gold” A logical young bird griffin, Gabriel, wants to find a way to stop to war between bird and lion in his land, Genetica.

2. “Scales of Emerald” A shy young dragon, Emmie, tries to keep her land, Reptilia, from destruction.

3. “Hair of Crystal” A brave young unicorn, Crystal, tries to find a way to join together the leaders of the land of Equinsta.

4. “Flames of Ruby” A vain young phoenix, Flaxter, tries to capture the eyes of girls. Taken place in the land of Flamia.

5. “Gems Unite” Gabriel, Emmie, Crystal, and Flaxter find out they are The Gems, the only ones who can save their world, Animagicia, from the beings, called Humurns, that are trying to destroy it. They must come together and find who they truly are. (Might have fun with this series. I’ve always loved mythical animals.)

“The Distance from Sam” An 8 year-old St. Bernard named Barry, a 3 year-old Golden Retriever named Mick, and a 1 year-old Sheltie named Sandy set off to return to their owner Sam, after being kidnapped and sent across country. (Kinda like Homeward Bound. Came in mind when I saw these three dogs alone by a street, no humans around.)

“The Skilled” Andy and Ashley(both fifteen) and their eight year-old siblings, twins Alex and Alexa, gain powers from the sewers. All: understand animals and fly, Andy: talk to toys, Ashley: speak to plants, Alex and Alexa: psychic powers. “I used to think my toys would come to life when I was gone. I guess I was right.”-Andy. Based on a dream. (Too many “A” names, oof. Also, toy Story much?)

“The Moon’s Eye” A teenage girl named April gets trapped under a snow drift and wakes up to be a wolf. A nearby wolf pack needs her aid and calls her The Mooneye, a changeling. (Cool. Cool.)

“Unusual Forces of Omnipotence” A woman and her horse are supposedly crushed by a U.F.O. When Tanaya wakes up she finds out she has super strong senses and can run as fast as her horse. Pluto the alien knows he’s going to be in trouble if his planet finds out he crash landed and accidentally gave a human the powers of her horse. He tries to fix it. Told from Tanaya, Sunray (the horse), and Pluto’s point of view. Based on a dream. (Sounds interesting! Title came from before I knew UFO was an acronym lol.)

“The Lawn” Unknown to humans, a yard full of statues come alive at night. There is an elk, two bears, four buffalo, a wolf, an eagle, three horses, a small boy, a moose, a bighorn sheep, and a rabbit. (Based on a real lawn I’d see on the way to school.)

“Dragon Eyes” Max has an ordinary life, until his family, him, and his three friends, Alice, Peter, and Samuel, are transported to another world. His parents are then kidnapped and they have to fight against an evil Mother Nature. Based on a dream. (Interesting. The dream was freaky.)

“Sweet Treat” Emily’s dad works at a candy factory, and one day she visits him and realizes his work is not all it seems… Based on a dream. (What? I don’t remember what was different about his work???)

“The Flight of the Supernatural” Randy thinks he is mostly a normal kid. Sure, he and his dad live inside a mountain, and sure, some flying species of human killed his mother, that doesn’t mean he can’t live normal life homeschooling and watching TV. But unfortunately, Randy’s life turns around when he finds out he can fly. Is his father telling the truth? Did his own species kill his mother? Based on a dream. (Actually REALLY loved this story.)

“Whispering Willow” A girl named Willow helps 20 wolf cubs escape a pet store and then is recruited by a zoo. Pretty soon all of the animals know her as Whisper. Based on a dream. (Cool. another animal whisperer.)

“The Invasion of Our Minds” Little black aliens invade Earth and only one person can stop them: Julia. Based on a dream. (Oh RIGHT! Yeah I remember that.)

“The Marble Island(Possibly a short story?)” Julia goes on a trip to a new marble island only to find the owner turns people into stone figurines. Based on a dream. (Links to the previous story, I think.)

“Have some candy!” Violet, an expert on strange occurrences, needs to help a group of people who mysteriously turned into animals after attempting to grab candy bars from a bin in a local store. Based on a dream. (More animal transformation.)

“The Guide to Mythical Creatures I Made Up” A guide to everything from the Mystic Melody to the Gollan. (I don’t remember either of their designs! :P )

“Trying to Get Back to Mom” Michael and Annabelle meet new friends, while they frantically try to reunite with their mother. (Don’t remember.)

“Surprise of the Future” Pearl travels to the future and has to fight her now-evil brother in his stone mansion. (Not Pearl from SU. Based on a dream.)

“All for You” A man has to overcome many obstacles, such as mermaids, yellow smoke wolves, and magic maps, to save the world and his girl. (Oh yeah, this was a cool one. Based on a song, but I can’t remember which one.)

“The Stranger at the Door” Keith and Amber have lived with their grandmother for many years, but now they live alone and nobody knows. Then a strange girl arrives at the door. She claims they will have to leave town within 2 hours or risk being stuck in a quarantine zone. There will be traffic jams and other hindrances, so it's best to leave right now without taking anything with you. Unsure about everything, including this strange girl, the teenage boy disagrees to the proposal, if all this turns out to be true, this choice will seem foolish. His younger sister does agree. But what if this strange girl can't be trusted. Or what if all this is an elaborate trap. How could an ordinary teenage girl and boy end up in a situation like this. Time to find out. (Oh, a quarantine story? How long ago was this? 2017 I think.)

“The Beginning of the Hybrid Brothers” A backstory that shines a light on how Ralph the Rat-Man and Dr. Discord came to be evil. (YES, MY TWO VILLAINS NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT BUT ARE STILL DEAR TO MY HEART HNNNNNNNG.)

“Unnamed but same as the blank” A girl named, _____, lives in a family of nine. She and her mother are the only ones who aren’t “Morhumals”, or people who can turn into one animal. After the twins mess-up and send a “Morhumals” hunter after them, it is up to ___ and her sister, ____ to rescue them.

“Song of the Siren” ____ is back after her fourteenth birthday. She finally has received her animal and must follow her family to the mythed Siren hideout.

UPCOMING ML SEASON 3 EPISODES SYNOPSISES AND THEORIES PART 1

k I had to do this eventually.

So welcome! We are now officially more than halfway through season 3 so I think that now it’s time to list all upcoming episodes, and what I personally think will go down in each based on synopsis.

I’ll be covering wether or not I think a episode will be filler, which episodes will have Kwami swap, viperon, pegasus, ect., and the general theories I have for what will happen in each episode. EPISODES WILL BE LISTED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

I WILL NOT BE INCLUDING FELIX, CHAT BLANC, AND BOTH FINALE PARTS SINCE THERE’S A PHOTO LIMIT AND THOSE ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT FILLER LOL.

This’ll be updated several times, and I’ll also include theories made by other people as well :))).

So let’s recap the episodes aired so far to make sure we’re all on the same page.

Episodes aired are Chameleon, Animaestro, Bakerix, Backwarder, Weredad, Silencer, Onichan, Oblivio, Christmaster, Gamer 2.0, Stormy Weather 2, Timetagger, Party Crasher. So obviously none of these will be mentioned.

Now let us commence!

1. REFLEKTA

So this episode seems very much like a “sequel” episode, as it’s a akuma repeat. However, it’s not listed as such, which may have to do with the fact that she’s “not alone” this time (a double akumatization??? With Rose, maybe???)

A big theory behind this episode that I can 100% get behind is that luka gets his miraculous in this episode. As seen before, most people get their miraculous when someone they love is akumatized, and since Juleka is Luka’s sister it makes sense. Plus, ladybug is gonna need help if Reflekta is indeed “not alone.”

Another theory going around is this is the Kwami swap episode, reason being some Kwami swap merch has the label “reflekta” on it. However, personally I think that episode will be “Feast”. (You’ll see that theory later).

Lastly, this is basically confirmed, this is the episode with Ladybug’s formal introduction to Mayura. This episode is the only one chronologically before Miraculer that hasn’t aired.

So there’s three big theories revolving around this episode. Yay!

2. DESPERADA

I mean, personally I think this episode is filler. I have nothing to say about it except that we got the design leaked because of out of order airing. This villain design was shown in Gamer 2.0:

Again, nothing much to say except she looks pretty wicked!

3. STARTRAIN

This episode kind of peaked my interest on the whole “help” part, and it also did because there was a post (can’t remember who, sorry) pointing out a startrain foreshadowing in a previous episode.

But now that Party Crasher is out, we now know that this “help” may have something to do with IT’S BASICALLY CONFIRMED MAX GET’S THE HORSE MIRACULOUS IN THIS EPISODE!!!!

As seen in Party Crasher, Chat already knows who Max is when he show’s up, meaning he got his miraculous in a previous episode. And since his mom get’s akumatized here, it can only be assumed... this is it chief.

I’m also desperate for this episode to come out because I’ve had a total of TWO dreams that Marrinette gets the mouse miraculous in this episode. I... have no idea why, but I just have that intuition telling me so.

4. KWAMI BUSTER

This episode has a extremely innocent synopsis but it SUSPICIOUS AS HELL since it’s called KWAMI BUSTER??? My guess is now Gabriel is trying to hunt down the miraculous box but why would the TEACHER BE CALLED KWAMI BUSTER??? DOES SHE KNOW?? 

My guess is she get’s akumatized for a completely different reason but Gabriel is just like “lol help me out. Track down some Kwamis” and she’s just like “lol mkay���

5. FEAST

WOAH AM I EXCITED FOR THIS.

So personally, I think the Kwami Swap happens in THIS episode. I don’t know, it just seems like a perfect episode that would set up a Kwami swap! Like maybe when Master Fu hurriedly gives back the miraculouses in a akuma attack, there’s a mix up in the Miraculous boxes???

I’m also excited to see how Adrien and Marrinette manage without Tikki and Plagg for, what, a day?? A week?? It’ll be really interesting to watch.

Also if I remember correctly, one of the leaks was Luka wearing a snake noir suit. Maybe it’s this episode??? If Master fu can’t give back the cat miraculous to Adrien in time?? Idk, but I’m hype.

(Side note: I find it really weird this is the only episode whose synopsis doesn’t outright mention a akuma villian. The name doesn’t sound like a akuma either?? This is hella suspicious and confusing lol)

6. IKARI GOZEN

Ooooo ok.

So, personally, I’m 99.9% sure Kagami gets the dragon miraculous in this episode. I mean, her mom is out here getting akumatized!! Also, I wonder what it was Kagami did wrong? It’s not really made clear... did Kagami disobey her for Adrien? For her own purposes??

Anyway, this episode is post Stormy Weather 2, a episode which pushed for development, and the other post stormy weather 2 episodes aired so far were amazing!! So you kno I’m hyped.

7. THE PUPPETEER 2

Okokok, this synopsis doesn’t scream much, but chronological wise it’s Post Stormy Weather 2, directly after party crasher, and IMMEDIATELY BEFORE CHAT BLANC, FELIX, LADYBUG, AND THE FINALE!!!

So for me, this episode can have a huge inciting incident that kicks of those wicked last few episodes of the season. The only theory I have for this is this episode is what gets the ball rolling. 

It’s supposed to come out this saturday, which is... crazy, actually. There might be some hugeee spoilers in this one! So watch with care!

Justice Society of America #4 (1992)

Ultrahumanite exhibits all the characteristics of a man happy to be reunited with friends: cheerily laughing, bright happy expression, hands on hips, weirdly-shaped massive hard-on.

Forgive me for the erect penis joke but I felt it was in the tradition of Grunion Guy. You might find it funny if you knew how uncomfortable it made me to type it and how worried I was for a second that my mother might see it. But then I realized that if my mom saw it, it would mean my mom read Grunion Guy's blog, and then I almost threw up. That would be so embarrassing! Normally I would be on the side of the Justice Society of America because they are the good people with the good values. But how good are their good values if they are trying to stop a job creator and upstanding corporate citizen like Ultrahumanite who is just trying to run his Ultragen business the best way he knows how: with stormtrooper bodyguards to defend labs where they experiment on animal-human hybrids? Anything that hurts corporate profits is a bad thing for capitalism and the Justice Society of America should know that, being that they have "America" right there in their name. Although they also have "Society" in their name and that is a bird whistle for socialists. The bird whistle is the dog whistle of the left because it is more pleasant to listen to and it isn't aggravating or obnoxious and it makes the world a better place for everybody (except people who hate birds and probably own guns to shoot those stupid birds. Stupid birds. So dumb).

Oh no! Nobody warned these old timers that we aren't doing prison rape jokes anymore!

Wildcat has some great words of wisdom in that previous panel. It is the most scienciest science statement I have ever read (unless it was the mathiest math statement): "If X did not happen, Y would have happened! Thusly I have proved we are better than you! QED! In your face, Ultrahumanite!" Whenever I would lose a game of Dungeons & Dragons with my friends Bullpup and McGroover, I would say, "Oh yeah? Let's see you make a delicious sandwich!" Then they would back down and they would be all, "Yes, you are correct, Pickle Boy. You are the better friend with the most useful skills and we are only good at pretending to slaughter Kobold families for copper coins." That's pretty funny if you realize Dungeons & Dragons is about adventurers invading the lairs of creatures to steal their material possessions! Doctor Mid-Nite does not quip with the others because he might be dead. Do not forget these guys are really old! It does not matter how many muscles they have or what kind of cardio breathalyzer tests they can pass; they still have super old bones and a lifetime of clogged arteries. One slip or the slightest bit of extra exertion could mean Stroke City or Brokenhipsville for these cool cats! That is old person slang! It is very humorous!

Now they goof on his stutter? I am beginning to wonder who the real villains are in this story!

Look how happy the Ultrahumanite is! And these old guys have been nothing but bitter, cynical old winds from the butt! Plus he is a successful businessman and scientist who has created life! It sounds like he has turned over a new leaf now that he no longer has to steal bodies. I am not ignoring the laboratory full of hybrid creatures; I'm just going to assume that they were all volunteers until it is proven otherwise. You cannot go through life never eating the buttered bread that fell on the floor buttered side down! Ultrahumanite decides to recount his past for some reason. This made me laugh because I was thinking, "Yeah! They are old men. They cannot remember stuff from so long ago and also they have enlarged prostates!"

But which is actually worse: making fun of somebody's disability or sympathizing with Nazis? I've got some hard questions to answer!

Some things are unforgivable but one thing I think we can all agree to forgive is a hot woman who sided with the Nazis.

How does a huge ape body reflect the Ultrahumanite's desires? Please do not answer, "He loves to copulate with monkeys," because that's what I an suggesting by the question and you would look like one of those fools on Twitter who thinks they are hilarious by restating somebody's joke in a less subtle manner.

Ultrahumanite continues to explain how he became such a pillar of the business community. It is as boring as you would expect a PowerPoint presentation from a business man would be. That was probably the joke! Why is not the trademarked name "PowerPoint" two words? If you are going to bother capitalizing the second "P", you might as well just separate the words. Maybe it was somebody's online name when they were fourteen years old. It is always a smart decision to just run the two words together rather than separating them with an underscore. And it is easier to read when the second word is capitalized (as opposed to every other word capitalized or just the consonants. I do not understand young people). Nobody remembers to put underscores in when searching for a name online!

"Ultrahumanite! You are experimenting on innocent people, ruining the environment, causing unknown amounts of damage to the populace of every city where one of your labs operates but Ted Grant and the world just want to know one thing: was that hot Nazi body the real you because 'Rrrrrow!'"

You think I am making a joke but I don't joke about things that I don't joke about and one of those things is that Ted Grant has previously expressed interest in cultivating an intimate relationship with hot Nazi Ultrahumanite. Specifically, he said earlier that she "swept him off his feet." He only used that phrase so Al could make a joke about how they were hanging upside down so the sweeping off of feet is still happening. But I think, in his heart, he wanted to say, "She made me spontaneously become a man every time we wrestled. Is that okay under the Hays Code? Can I get away with that amount of innuendo?!" The Ultrahumanite has to go deal with The Flash who has literally suddenly appeared. Weird how the word "literally" is never actually needed when it is used properly. I guess using it in a hyperbolic and exaggerated fashion is really its only job. While Ultrahumanite is gone, Doctor Mid-Nite "double joints" his wrists to escape. I'm pretty sure Grunion Guy's wrists were double jointed by the amount of times he wrote about masturbating. He was a crude jerk but I still hope he rests in peace in that pauper's cemetery down by the toxic sludge factory. Doctor Mid-Nite takes on the guards while The Atom and Wildcat rush out to save The Flash who is The Flash and almost certainly does not need saving. While Doctor Mid-Nite is beating up the guards, he suddenly becomes a stand up comedian. Was I wrong to assume he was an actual doctor? Is that just his stage persona? I would tell you why his jokes were funny if they were but I cannot figure them out. Why is this an old joke (and if it is, why would he even retell it when it is nonsense): "I know you're out there because I can hear you breathing"? The Flash gets encased in some living green goo that absorbs heat and kinetic energy which might also be a definition of heat? I'm just a sandwich maker slash writer's assistant who has never once showed an ounce of curiosity about the real world so forgive me for languishing in my ignorance. At least I own a thesaurus. Back in Gotham City, Jesse Quick appears for a page or two to remind everybody that she exists. "Hello! I am the hot daughter of the infomercial guy! I have also deluded myself into believing a mathematical equation gives me super speed! It makes no sense!" Jesse takes some papers proving that Ultragen is breaking laws so the JSA has the right to beat the crap out of its CEO. For comedic effect, they have a little more confusion over Ultrahumanite's pronouns (which, to be fair, he has not expressed any preference for and doesn't seem to mind using whatever pronouns match the gender he seems to be expressing) before rushing off to punch her in the face. I don't know what pronouns to use either but she was a super hot Nazi so let's just go with that one.

See? She is a scientific genius!

At first I was all, "Oh, big deal! So The Flash is trapped in goo!" And then the Ultrahumanite was all, "You cannot breathe without oxygen!" And then I was all, "Oh no! I had not thought of that! Somebody save him, preferably an old guy from the JSA or I will feel cheated out of my hard earned buck twenty-five." I keep laughing at that previously scanned panel and how Wildcat and The Atom are hiding behind trees the way characters do in comic strips. So ridiculous! It is even funnier if you remember that they are old men! I bet you are laughing a lot more now! Doctor Mid-Nite arrives because he "smoke bombed" with his previous stand-up gig. Get it?! If you understood the play on the word "bomb" there and that I meant the fight against the guards when I said "stand-up gig," you would be cracking up like crazy!

Yeah. A smoke bomb! We all know that is where he keeps them!

The Flash breaks free and Doctor Mid-Nite punches Ultrahumanite in the nose, breaking it. Ultrahumanite is so vain that he falls to the ground, defeated! And that is when the Calvary arrives! That is funny because I used the wrong word and now you are picturing a crucified Jesus riding up on a horse to save the day instead of Green Lantern, The Flash, and Jesse Quick arriving on a Green Lantern construct! Justice Society of America #4 Rating: A. I have not read as many comic books as Grunion Guy but this one seemed pretty good in comparison to the ones I have read, like WildC.A.T.S. #1 and pick any issue you want of Youngblood. One more "What gender is Ultrahumanite?!" joke for the road!

Man, I made up the most elaborate stuff when I was a kid

My friend and I had this entire fantasy storyline going where we pretended we could, iirc, go through a portal in the pocket of my coat (don’t ask me why) to another world where there were unicorns everywhere and we could ride them and like, fight dragons and stuff (which I think stemmed from a group of boys in our class having a game where they pretended to be dragons). Also I think we had a band in said fantasy world at one point. And might have been princesses. It’s unclear. We got a few people involved with this and called it “The Unicorn Club”.

Another friend and I played what I lovingly referred to as the “Never-ending Webkinz game” that was...exactly what it sounds like. The main part I remember is that there was some kind of love triangle between our horse webkinz.

My sister and I had similarly involved storylines with our Barbies, of course.

I went through a period where I drew this series of comics about cats. I couldn’t draw back then and I still can’t.

I once wrote a whole series of short stories about cats who might have been detectives or something? Idk. I held on to those, they’re entertaining to reread because they make no sense. What was up with me and cats in third grade? I wasn’t even a Warriors fan.

There were also stories about stuff my sister and I did, written in third-person for some reason. There were a lot too.

I also held on to the infamous Little Red Notebook that had my 10-year-old self’s version of the Unicorn Club origin story in it. Although in that version the portal was in a computer? I remember it being a coat pocket when we played it though.

Then in middle school I tried my hand at actually writing and it was just as crazy.

I remember a story about a girl discovering she was a princess (of course), and one about a future world where people get superpowers on their 16th birthday (I actually liked that one. Maybe I should bring it back?)

I think I also brought back The Unicorn Club in story form during this period so maybe the red notebook is actually from then?

But at some point I started to get really self-conscious about my writing. If my writing wasn’t good it wasn’t worth it and I was convinced my writing was terrible.

I remember hiding those stories from middle school in a “secret folder” on my laptop nested within a bunch of other folders within folders, designed (I thought) so that no one could ever find the real folder, even though no one but me used my computer or ever really looked at it.

This was less because of what was in the stories (I was 12, it was harmless sci-fi and fantasy type stuff) and more because I was scared someone would read it and think it was weird or worse, bad (which, again. I was 12. It was pretty bad. But 12 year olds can’t be expected to be great writers).

To this day only my sister has seen the Secret Folder, and that was because I occasionally used her as an unofficial editor.

I didn’t write through most of high school and college except for class papers, and some poetry for one creative writing class. But I didn’t touch fiction for years, when stories were what I loved when I was younger, for really no reason other than that I had become convinced, through no evidence but my own thoughts, that I was a bad writer.

But at heart, I’ve never stopped being a writer. I’ve always had stories in my head, places and characters I would go to when I was bored and alone, even if the stories I told myself didn’t have much of a plot.

Lately, something’s changed. My ideas have been slowly making their way out of my head onto the page, even if they’re just silly-seeming fanfiction so far instead of the ideas I keep closer to my chest.

But I’m working. I’m writing. I’m trying to get past the idea that nothing that isn’t perfect is worth writing. After all, what is perfect?

I wrote a poem in high school called “The Writer’s Journey” about the struggle of writing. But this writer’s journey is just beginning.

I am writing again. I am starting to think of myself as a writer again. And it feels good.

2020 has been a hell of a ride. But I want to try something different for 2021. I want to get back to my creative roots. I used to write all the time, I wanna get back in that habit.

So, here’s the idea:

"Dolly’s Obsession, Doc and Grinny”

[Zeke] Is taking a walk and wanders near Lie's place-

[Lie] Is returning from Doc's place- Oh, hey Zeke.  Enjoying the afternoon sun?

[Zeke] Mmm... Oh! Hello Lie... - His voice is just as melodious as usual, but it's obvious he's concerned.

[Lie] - Is everything okay?

[Zeke] I'm worried about my mom...

[Lie] - What's wrong with her?

[Zeke] Well... it's like this. She started mining and I thought that was great because she's getting into the game. Go native you know? But she's gotten obsessed with the potion brewing. She's acting really starnge.

[Lie] - Potion brewing?  I'm not very good at that myself, but how exactly is she acting strange?

[Zeke] It's hard to describe. She seems different, more confident, but in this really hungry, driven way. And she hardly ever leaves her room.

[Lie] - Is she neglecting you at all?  Are you okay?

[Zeke] It's not like that. I don't need her to take care of me. I can cook and do laundry and all that. And she's not ignoring me if I try to talk to her. Just kind of.. like patting my head? Sending me out to play?

[Lie] - That doesn't sound right...  Every once in awhile sure, but almost everytime?

[Zeke] Does potion brewing usually smell bad?

[Lie] - Depends on who's making it

[Zeke] I know she's keeping the furnaces going at all hours, I can sorta hear the flames when I'm in my room. I don't know what to think.

[Lie] - Do you want me to talk with her?

[Zeke] If you want to try. I already bugged her an hour ago myself and didn't get anywhere.

[Lie] - I'll see what I can do.  You can stick around here for now if you want

[Zeke] Do you mind if I hang out with the barn cats for a bit?

[Lie] - Go right ahead.  You're welcome in the house to hang out with Hope and the Vulpix's too

[Zeke] Thank you.

[TLOT] Is sitting on the side porch of the castle reading a book and eating cookies with his feet up-

[Lie] Rides up on Beau- Oh, hey TLOT

[TLOT] Waves cheerfully- Morning Lie! Want a cookie?

[Lh] Pads over to the top of the steps - Mow?

[Lie] - No, I'm actually heading down into the lab to talk to Dolly

[TLOT] Really? Why?

[Lie] - Zeke is worried about her, she's been really focused on potion making lately, like a concerning amount apparently

[TLOT] Oh. Do you want some backup?

[Lie] - Sure, just let me get Beau inside Doc's pen

[TLOT] I'll meet you inside- Goes in and LH scampers after him.

[Lh] Leaps onto a fence post and butts agains one of the skeletal horses-

[Lie] Rides in and dismounts before giving Beau an apple and stepping out of the pen- Ready to go?- She's holding her hand out for LH to rub against

[Lh] Bumps her- puuuuuuuuuuuurrrr

[TLOT] Whenever you are. Feel free to just pick him up, he's love-y enough to not care.

[Lie] - Oh I know- She picks LH up and starts heading for the lab

[TLOT] Sniffs as he goes down the stairs- Someone is really burning something.

[Lie] - Yeah, what are they trying to do?

[TLOT] Heads down to Dolly's room and taps on the wall. - Dolly?

-There's a bit of hurried shuffling and the distinct sound of blocks being placed before she comes to the door-

[Dolly] Yes? - Her face shows a lack of sleep and there's a weirdly masculine cast to her posture and the way the torchlight falls on her cheeks.

[Lie] - Hey, is everything okay?

[Dolly] Weirdly intense smile- Of course it is? Why?

[Lie] - Because your son is worried about you

[Dolly] Aww, he's such a thoughtful child. Why is he worried?

[Lie] - Because according to him you've been working relentlessly and even though you pay attention to him when he initiates it, he feels like it's more like "pat on the head, go outside to play" type of thing

[Dolly] Well I have been rather busy, this is true.

[Lie] - You should take a break, you look exhausted

[Dolly] I do? I feel fine. I actually feel healthier then I have in ages. My knees and ankles stopped hurting too. I never thought I'd get to essencially quit my job before becoming a senior citizen, if ever, but this has been so good for me.

[Lie] Gives TLOT a concerned glance-

[TLOT] Is squinting with obvious effort and casually backs away to lean on the big table-

[Lie] - Can we come in Dolly?- She casually puts her hands behind her back and spawns a calming flower, hoping that will get Dolly relaxed enough to realize how tired she is

[Dolly] Why? We can talk just as easily out here.

[Lie] - Alright, then step out so we can sit and talk.  Relax a little

[Dolly] Comes out of the room and stands in front of her - What's on your mind Lie?

[Lie] - Concern, my mate is off on his own server to deal with some stuff

[Dolly] Ah, I'm sorry. - her eyes flick ever so slightly back to her space-

[Lie] Her hand goes up to the lockets hanging from her neck- I'm just...  Really worried this time around...  He thinks it has to do with his NOTCH...

[Dolly] He's strong, and if he fails, his friends and wife will be here to catch him I'm sure.

-Lie starts to feel a little bit of pressure, as if something is pushing her slightly away from Dolly-

[Lie] Frowns a little- Dolly, are you sure everything is alright?

[Dolly] Absolutely! Coming here is the second best thing that's ever happened to me.

[Lie] - If you're sure...

[Dolly] I've never been more sure of anything!

[TLOT] With effort- What.. was the first, best thing?

[Dolly] My son.

[TLOT] Understandable.

[Lie] - Alright, well I suppose we should let you get back to your project...

[Dolly] Absolutely. And it was super talking to you two.

[Lie] - Same to you

[Dolly] Goes back in her room-

[TLOT] Lets out the breath he was holding - shit...

[Lie] - What's wrong?

[TLOT] It's hard to explain... it's like... she's of two minds somehow? I got just a glimpse and then nothing. Just white flames that blocked me from scanning her anymore.

[Lie] Summons her white flames after a brief amount of concentration- Like these?

[TLOT] Yes... It wasn't an attack. Just something shielding her mind.

[Lie] - Weird...  Well, if I'm not needed here, I think I'll head home.  Unless there's something you need me for?

[TLOT] No, I think I'm going to go rest. That didn't feel too great. My head kinda hurts now.

[Lie] - Okay, I'll see myself out.  Oh, and I heard about Notch and Flux, I'm assuming you felt it?

[TLOT] Oh yes.... that was nice. And very overdue.

[Lie] - Talk about a slow burn

[CP] Enters his server in his office and begins preparing to leave when Winston opens the door and enters-

[Winston] - Master, there's something urgent we must discuss

[CP] - Not now Winston

[Winston] - Please sir, you should hear this!

[CP] Pauses- Five minutes Winston

[Winston] Composes himself- Sir, since you've ordered us general to hide away the general mobs have come under attack and are vanishing.  We can find no trace of the ones that have disappeared, not even a sign of death

[CP] - Mobs don't just vanish into thin air Winston

[Winston] - I know that sir, which is why I urge you to be careful and perhaps look into this

[CP] - A few mobs disappearing is no major call for concern Winston

[Winston] - It's not a few sir

[CP] Stops what he's doing and turns to face his most trusted general- How many Winston?

[Winston] Seems a bit ashamed- A few hundred sir, in a very short period of time as well

[CP] Sighs- Get me names and I'll look into it

[Winston] Salutes and hurries off to gather the information requested-

[CP] Sits at his desk and pulls up the data for his game and sets it up to search for the vanished mobs.  It isn't long before Winston returns and hands him a list of names over several pages of paper-

[Winston] - Here you are Master

[CP] - Thank you, if you can figure out where these new mob leaders usually begin to rise, please do so.  It will be of great help

[Winston] - Immediately sir

[Doc] Is searching the house for Grinny-

[Lh] Is sort of helping.

[Grinny] Found a high spot to hide, he's hidden above the dragon head in the vine room-

[Doc] Walks into the room looking around-

[Lh] Bounds in with a small mouse toy in his mouth an spots Grinny, he drops the toy to mew at the other cat-

[Doc] Oh, there you are Grinny!

[Grinny] - Fuck off

[Doc] Ah, don't be so rude. I wanted to check on your fur. Your sweater could probably use a wash too.

[Grinny] Growls a little-

[Doc] Scoots a little closer but still out of swat range- It's taking so long for your hair to grow back. I'm just trying to help.

[Grinny] Presses himself farther back into the corner-

[Doc] Drops a wool block to get a bit higher and climbs onto it. - Grinny.... Don't be like that.

[Grinny] - Go away!

[Doc] Why won't you let me help you? I've been nothing but nice to you. Is there something you need that you don't have?

[[Grinny] Flicks tail in irritation- Yes!  Peace and quiet!

[Doc] Is silent for a long moment. In that space, it become apparent how quiet the house actually is. There's the barest crackle from the flaming netherrack on the roof, and the muffled noises of the mobs in the lab far below, but otherwise it's very very quiet. - Is this place really not peaceful enough for you?

[Grinny] - This quiet is worse, reminds me of the labs...

[Doc] I'm sorry Grinny. What they did to you was unforgivable. But... please don't hate me because of it. I'm not that kind of person.

[Lh] Mow?

[Grinny] - Says the one who also works in a lab and experiments!

[Doc] But mostly I just test things out on myself. Unless someone is hurt and needs an emergency fix. Or they request special work.

[Grinny] - It's still a lab!

[Doc] Well, I do have a doctor's office in town...?

[Grinny] Growls and decides to try and slink off to go find Smile-

[Doc] Reaches out and grabs Grinny gently before hopping down off the block. Xe rubs his ears gently. - Come on Grinny. What can I do to convince you of my sincerity?

[Grinny] Struggles- LET GO!

[Doc] Feels him in hir arms and realizes he still needs the sweater. Xe sets his feet down on the fuzzy block but keeps hold of him- I'm just trying to talk to you. Calm down.

[Grinny] Immediately tries to pull away-

[Doc] Give me a decent answer and I'll let go. What do you want from me? Give me a chance.

[Grinny] - Just leave me alone

[Doc] Sighs- I'm here if you change your mind. - Xe lets him go.

[Grinny] Darts off-

What is Elsewhere University?

Elsewhere University is a university on a fairy hill, as first depicted in this comic I drew a year ago! People began asking questions about the world, and then writing stories and drawing art set within it, and then building on each other’s stories and on my answers about the world, and it’s become a big lovely sandbox (the second comic‘s entire purpose is to celebrate some of my favorite things that have grown exclusively out of the fandom). The various submitted stories aren’t necessarily compatible with each other, because there are currently well over 2k stories and asks building this world and expecting anyone to know all of that is absolutely mad. But they’re all built on the same base mythology of folklore+college weirdness outlined in the first comic.

Where can I find the original comic?

As part of my Tapastic series, or on my main blog. 

My ask/fortune/submission hasn’t shown up yet.

At the time of this writing, my inbox is around 2500, and roughly 3/4 of those are student asks. There’s going to be a bit of a wait before anything you submit sees the light of day (although stories will show up before fortunes do). I know it’s not ideal, but I will reach it eventually, I promise!

That said (given that this is tumblr) message me privately, off anon, if you’d like to make sure it hasn’t been eaten by the website. If you can give me a username or an exact phrase to ctrl+f, I’d be happy to check that it made it safely to my inbox! The bare minimum - it should be readable with regards to grammar/spelling, it should be related to Elsewhere University, and, you know, don’t be an asshole. Don’t worry too much about continuity! Due to the sandbox nature of the project, that’s all a bit fuzzy anyway.

Names FAQ

What’s a true name? The name that you consider to be truly yours; it’s highly personal and subjective.

Does the legal status of the name matter? No.

Can nicknames be true names? Yes.

Can you have more than one true name? How would that work? Yes. Depending on what each name meant to you, each true name might have power over you in its entirety, or each be part of a larger whole.

If I pronounce or spell my name differently/use a derivative or variation of my true name as a safe name, would that be safe? No. It wouldn’t have power over you, but it wouldn’t be hard to discover your true name.

What happens if someone speaks my true name? If you are given a command with your true name, you are compelled to obey it. This is only true in the Elsewhere and areas affected by it.

Can safe names influence a person over time? It’s unusual, but it’s happened.

Can a safe name become your true name? Yes; if you feel yourself becoming too attached to a safe name, it’s time to change it (not an uncommon event).

How does the school deal with safe names? Student IDs and role call lists for professors include the student number and the preferred name of a student. There’s a hard ban on obscenity, at least as far as the safe names in the school system go, but even so, they range from mundane to pop culture to total nonsense.

Would a name with negative associations be a good safe name? Yes, in the sense you’d never have to worry about growing too attached too it.

Is it possible to be nameless? Yes, which renders you invulnerable to this particular hazard. There are still plenty of other pitfalls, so overall the nameless don’t attract too much malice from the Gentry.

Is my last name part of my true name? It depends on the importance it holds for you. But even if it doesn’t signify anything, it’s recommended you keep all parts of your legal name secret in order to make it more difficult for anyone to find personal information on you.

How does the school protect true names? The administration offices are heavily guarded against both human and Elsewhere intruders, including but not limited to 24/7 guards, iron in all the walls, heavily password-protected computers, and formidable custom iron filing cabinets that hold all the paperwork they couldn’t avoid printing out.

Does everyone on campus go by a safe name? Almost everyone. There’s always a few skeptic freshman who don’t buy into what is presented as Elsewhere university’s ‘unique traditions’. The lucky ones are given nicknames by other students who persist until the skeptic has stopped protesting. The unlucky ones find out the hard way why you don’t want anyone to know your true name.

When

When I met you, everything changed. I found myself reading fairytales about unimaginable riches and unbreakable love. But in my mind, we were the main characters. We lived so many lives through the torn pages of my books. In one chapter you slayed dragons and bad men to gain my honor. In another, you broke me out of my prison of a home, tossed me on the back of your horse and we ran away together against everyone's wishes. We could be the king and queen, or a brave Knight and a fair maiden, or a handsome farm boy and the bakers daughter. In one book we lived a life on the run, in another we ruled from a beautiful castle, or another where we settled down in a cozy cabin deep in the woods. When I met you, I knew I would love you forever. Not because you were a decorated knight or a wealthy king. But because you were wonderfully boring like me. You didnt offer gold and the biggest castle, or a life of fame and countless admirers. You had nothing but your name, a promise to tell everything there was to know about you, and an attraction to boringly normal girls. We started from nothing but two ordinary people, and grew into more I could have ever imagined. When I let you in, I feared you wouldn't stay. I was terrified that you would see my impulsive behaviors, strange habits, and flaws, decide I wasn't worth the risk, leave and erase me from your mind. But despite my fear, I took the risk. I never sugar-coated or hid a thing. I was pure. I gave you the real me, as weird as I knew she was. When we started to grow, you told me you loved me because I was different. You told me if you were ever asked what your favorite season was, you would say autumn. And if asked why, you would simply say because its my favorite too. You said that the real reason was because as soon as the leaves changed and fell, signaling that autumn was here, I would beg you to come out and play in the new fallen leaves with me every day. You would follow me around and help me  find the prettiest leaf we could from that day, then take a picture of it so I could make a collage of every autumn we spent together. You suggested we make it a tradition. You also suggested we keep it to ourselves so it would remain special to us. When we continued to grow, on rough days you reminded me of the love you had for my one of a kind personality. On a day when things weighed a bit heavier on my mind than usual, I asked if there was anything you would change about me. You said you would change the way I collected little things I found beautiful, like my rock and sea glass collection. When you felt the floor shake from my heart dropping to it, you continued by saying the only thing you would change was to make them our collections not just mine, and only if I'd allow it. You said you found beauty in all the things I did simply because of the way I cared so much. You suggested we start a new collection between the two of us, and you let me pick what we would collect. We spent the next week digging, planting, and perfecting our own little flower garden. When it was finished, we made a little sign to stick next to it that said "OUR flower collection". You said you would never change me. When we began to thrive, you mentioned to me how much you loved my imagination. You told me that you loved to just sit back and watch me like I was your favorite television show. You said you would still happily watch even if I did nothing. Because I did nothing as if it was the most wonderful thing in the world. You told me you were convinced I saw things that you didn't, and that they must be breathtaking because of the way my face looked all the time. You said you loved to hear me talk late at night, when my eyelids are heavy and my words speak only truth. When I sleepily mumble into your chest about how I sometimes wonder what it would feel like to be a star shooting through outer space, knowing you're already dead and gone but still brightly illuminating the darkest corners of the galaxy for thousands of light-years, or how I think cats will rule the world one day. You said you admired the way I look at bugs or plants with such love in my eyes, like a proud mom. You would always joke and say I was thinking so hard that you could hear me screaming "you're beautiful and you will touch the sky one day" to the flowers that popped up in our garden. When we fought, it was never like I thought it would be. Our fights were quick and silly. Every conflict we had, I ended by acting like a child. I would cross my arms, pout, huff and puff, then walk away and hide to give you the silent treatment for an hour or so. And you found it so cute that you would sniff me out and cuddle until the problem was gone. When it really hit us that we were in love, nothing changed. Nothing changed because we both knew it from the day we met. I didn't feel a thing change. I still got light headed when you wrapped your arms around me. My heart still raced every time you entered a room. Your laugh still made my stomach do back flips until I was laughing along with you. You still turned over every morning and whispered to my sleepy ears "thank God it wasn't a dream". You still wiped my face after eating because I still lacked manners. We still lived like lovers and best friends. We still played pranks on eachother and we still kept backup gifts in case our pranks went wrong. We never settled for our current state of love being our last. We continued to grow and learn from eachother. And when we decided to get married, we figured we already lived like a married couple, so why not just start a family too. When fate decided we were a good match, nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. I was about to get my mind blown, heart stolen, and everything I thought love was erased from memory.  I didn't expect to just stumble across my soul mate that day. When I look back now, I can remember the exact second time slowed. Because when I met you, everything changed.

Chapter 7: First mermaid chapter with the more traditional enchanting voice/eating men thing, aka the Evangeline Blue chapter. Chapter 8: Leon accidentally walks into D’s prehistoric “dream” at the museum.

Chapter 9: The confusing chapter where there’s like.... bird sperm/human sperm and two plots going on at once that you only figure out are two different plots at the very end. Chapter 10: Maggie trades her dog for a girl. Girl becomes better liked. Maggie ends up lowkey becoming the dog, which is the girl. Dog/Girl is definitely nicer than Maggie. Chapter 11: Drugs. Cannibals. D being super gay with Chief Wong and Leon walking in on The Very Dangerous Kiss(TM). Need I say more? Chapter 12: The Teddy Bear That Survived The Nazis chapter. Meanwhile, D and Leon have a picnic.

VOLUME FOUR

Chapter 13: Leon and D investigate hermaphrodite fish to discover the murderer of Jodie who might or might not also be a fish. On a twist, the Jodie fish, who is technically not quite a fish, also misses Jodie, who is definitely not a fish. Chapter 14: Horse races and bets, featuring D groping Leon’s pecs. Chapter 15: SUPER GAY VAMPIRE CHAPTER. Vampire gay for D. D gay for Leon and tries to pull a fake relationship trope. Leon is like Keep Me Out Of Your Love Triangle Plz I Don’t Care If Gay Or Bisexual. Another vampire on the move and Leon finally gets to lock up D for a very small amount of time. Chapter 16 (Extra 1): GATTOLOTTO. MY CHILD GATTOLOTTO. D offers Leon a plant which ends up saving his life. Chapter 16 (Extra 2): Leon briefly takes care of Pon-chan. Two lady flowers then have sex with Leon going between them as their “pollinating“ bee.

VOLUME FIVE

Chapter 17: The Kirin chapter with the body switcheroo of the PRESIDENT. Chapter 18: My son Chris’ first appearance!!!! D takes care of Leon’s little brother before he gets sent to a correctional facility and through it unlocks Level 5 Friendship: The Reveal Of The Tragic Backstory. Chapter 19: Royal cat with huge-ass emerald necklace that decides the next heir to the throne goes through a rebellious phase. Chapter 20: Swan Lake ballerina going through a crisis pulls a disappearing act.

VOLUME SIX

Chapter 21: Peruvian terrorist group with a jaguar kidnap D, Leon gets Leonapped too when he tries to save him. Other people comment on how gay D and Leon are; they do nothing to disprove this. D blood shenanigans happens, along with El Dorado and stuff. Chapter 22: Christmas = bad memories to Chris, and the Terrible Family shows up to make it worse. Chris meets D and Leon’s other child from last Christmas, who just happens to be a dragon with three heads who causes an earthquake. Leon pulls through in time.  Chapter 23: Talentless child from a family of musicians gets a wise dog. Chapter 24 (Extra 3): D and Leon have a Totally Not A Date date flower-watching when D gets a package from his grandfather.

VOLUME SEVEN

Chapter 25: Time Loop-ish chapter involving a butterfly that almost kills Leon when it makes him relieve the shoot-out between him and his childhood friend in different roles. Chapter 26: Baboon heart donor is a thing. D suddenly gets an identical sister that Leon is attracted to even though it’s literally D With Boobs, and some hints at D’s relationship with his father are revealed. Chapter 27: A member of the child assassin group Scorpio Children with unresolved mommy issues takes D hostage. D disagrees. Chapter 28: Girl who works to lose weight ends up winning self-confidence too, models get into a diet where they become some sort of human-looking insect, and boxer dude that just wants to drink a cold beer. Chapter 29 (Extra 4): Chris and the pet gang are nosy about Q-chan’s true form, and go in search of the “magician” that supposedly changed him into a babbit. Chapter 29 (Extra 5): T-chan has a crush, and tries to win her over. His ultimate courtship move then lets us know that he ALSO appears to have a crush on Leon. Excellent taste! (Literally.)

VOLUME EIGHT

Chapter 30: Second mermaid chapter. Featuring family vacations, amnesiac D, body switcheroo, natural disasters, angry sailor, and Leon might or might not ask some kind of Very Gay Question we shall never know about. Chapter 31: Cutie Pie Shapeshifter Ten-chan goes with a family that can’t decide on which pet they want; enter Little Ghost Girl and a house fire. Chapter 32: Novelist Edna Hurry and the weird twins thing. Chapter 33 (Extra 5): Chris goes out on his first errand alone. D and Leon are worried parents that keep a look out for him.

VOLUME NINE

Chapter 34: Newcomer (Monica) is in love with D from her past lives. D admits he doesn’t know how to love humans. Chapter 35: Mafia dude sends little girl to get a tiger scroll that will determine the sucessor of the Chinese Mafia.  Chapter 36: More mommy issues, this time with someone named Julia and murdered pets. Chapter 37: Lover of a suspect Leon killed tries to take her revenge on Leon’s loved ones aka D and Chris. Tiny extra: Count D’s sex education class >u>

VOLUME TEN

Chapter 38: Chris is taken away by his “sisters“. FBI dude shows up seeking D. Chapter 39: Leon thinks D doesn’t care for Chris or him. FBI dude takes Leon to investigate D, only to discover that D is gone. Meanwhile, D hitchhikes and “D“ lures Leon away. Chapter 40: FBI dude pursues an injured D until the tables are turned on him. Leon has a nightmare Meet The Parents scenario with Papa D. Backstory hints all around. Chapter 41: D lore explanations, one (1) Crusty-Ass Bitch is revealed. Lemme guess…this passage is from the Bible. The show’s holding my interest, it’s just that it’s kind of waning because Satsuriku no Tenshi has been getting some real bad talk all around and yet it’s pretty popular. At least, that’s according to Prattle…

The comedic beats seem out of line with the rest of the show. Like someone was trying too hard to make the show “mainstream”. I’m finally able to put my finger on what I think Satsuriku reminds me of now – it reminds me of The Dog Island, a much more relaxing game. Then again, this is because of all the talk about finding triggers – that game is all “find to complete quests”, so it’s easy to see how the comparison came about.

On the other hand, there was a lot of talking (which I don’t mind), but the logic behind these mysteries didn’t quite make sense because the emphasis for this show is the supernatural (also not a dealbreaker). The narrator’s helpful, but a tad intrusive to the story’s flow, plus it’s kind of hard to see where conclusions were made due to even more problems explaning logic (in parts that are meant to explain the logic) than Holmes of Kyoto. It’s meant to be charming, but if I keep going through the show with not that much emotion, it’s probably destined fo the drop pile…
