fuck it, im gonna cook with the abyss and how it is absolutely draining kaeya in every way. it's got information from 5.3 and 5.2's interlude quest, but no story quest spoilers at all in terms of 5.3 so it's extremely vague spoilers, i won't mention sources unless it's related to how kaeya's being fucked over, 5.2 however i will mention sources

as 5.2 implied and 5.3 confirmed, the abyss is not only a physical threat to someone, it is a mental threat as well. overwhelming all the senses, physically and metaphorically, anyone contaminated by the abyss is doomed to a life of chronic pain to a degree. even if the elixir the captain revealed he knows how to make to combat the worse of abyssal contamination syndrome, the scars don't die.

so what happens if someone, like kaeya, is born with the abyss forming half of their dna? kaeya is tied directly to the abyss from birth until a death he cannot get due to being khaenri'ahn and therefore immortal. kaeya lives in constant pain, some days it's physical and some days it's mental, rarely is it both, and almost never it's none. it doesn't help he got thrown into ice for five hundred years and butchered his immune system as well (thanks pierro), so the abyss is absolutely beating him up for that.

it's why he barely shows up to many things, if he's not working to distract from the pain, he's likely trying to expunge the abyss by using it as much as possible, which is making everything worse but he isn't catching on because of the delusion the abyss has him in that this is fine. it's a never ending cycle of agony for kaeya.

the scene where he watches focalors get executed is an image that haunts neuvillette every single time he is forced to use his dragon sovereign powers. this was not how he wanted to regain his authority, not entirely. he knows he can't change the mind of a god, and he shouldn't, it is why he stopped himself from interposing the blade. it was the knife to free furina, and he knew it was the best thing for everyone in fontaine, even if he now carries the burden of the leadership of fontaine alone and is the only one to really understand the full truth - as he has yet to tell anyone exactly what occurred in the final conversation.

3. Sonic usually being so allergic to truly vulnerable moments that when he expresses something heartfelt randomly Tails thinks he’s been stabbed or something and does not believe him when he reassures him that he’s fine he’s fine he’s not dying yeesh

every so often, varric will write a black fox story. not anything fancy or for publication or anything, just for fun and because he knows hawke has a soft spot for them. varric finishes one of these black fox tales a couple of nights before he brings rook with him to minrathous — the last one. it's about the very last black fox story, the one where the black fox and his friends all disappear together into the depths of arlathan forest, where those in the know say you can find them to this very day, if you know where to look, or if you ever find yourself in trouble and in need of a helping hand. they'll turn up to aid a traveller in need, and disappear back between the shaded trees again once the day is saved, squabbling all the way, seeking treasures and unlikely quests yet unfound and unimagined.

they say on some days, you can hear them as laughter and friendly bickering on the wind from a couple of clearings over. it's not the end, it's just other adventures, some other place. that's the thing about stories. they're funny that way.
