Y'know, it's unfortunate more people don't compare Louis and Violet in good faith.
Like, when I do see people compare them, it's usually through the lens of one is good, and the other bad. One is more canon than the other, and here's why. One is objectively better for Clementine, and the other is less impactful, worse written, didn't have chemistry with her, insert several insults here, etc.
I don't think it's inherently bad to express why you might not like one of them, or why you prefer one over the other. That's fine, that's a matter of opinion. It only gets to me when it becomes hostile, or passive aggressive... but even then, I've learned to just roll my eyes and move on. Some people make it very clear that they're not worth having a discussion with.
However, I wish I could read more nuanced comparisons of the two that didn't default to the "and that's why this one is better." At least some are kind enough to tack on a "for my Clementine" at the end.
You know how it goes: Louis is cute and he makes Clementine laugh, whereas Violet's boring, her love is shallow, she's still not over Minerva and she's using Clementine as a rebound. Violentine's a bad ship because Violet's actually a traitor, and they're practically the same person and that's bad.
Violet's loyal and reliable, whereas Louis is annoying, he never takes anything serious, he's a traitor for his vote, and he's nothing but a distraction. Clouis is a bad ship because how could any Clementine possibly like him after he voted her and AJ out? That's bad!
That's always the conclusion, right? One good, one bad.
This is incredibly limiting and it drives me nuts.
They're foils. They contrast one another, highlight each other's strengths and flaws, in such an interesting way that it makes Clementine's choice between them all the more meaningful.
One is not good and the other bad, they're different, and I think that's worth exploring.
Let's start with a common argument: Violet is the more impactful option due to her connection to Minerva.
Now, to be fair, I can understand why someone on Team Violet would believe this. Yes, it's true that the confrontation with Minerva is more impactful for a violentine shipper who has more investment in Violet as a character. Louis doesn't have as strong of a connection to her.
However, what they're failing to recognize is that Minerva isn't the only ghost to haunt this narrative. Violet may have Minerva, yes, but Louis has Marlon... and that doesn't just go away once Marlon's dead.
Violet's route has Minerva as her ex-girlfriend, and her bond with Tenn that all comes to a head on the bridge. Louis' route has Marlon's death and how that specifically impacts his relationship with AJ and Clementine, and the slow burn of forgiveness on all sides.
Marlon and Minerva are also reflective of Clementine's worst outcomes.
Clementine and Marlon were tied together through Brody's blood splattered on their hands and faces. They both killed a part of Brody, but only one of them lies about who killed her first.
After Marlon dies, Clementine gradually replaces him throughout the game; Rosie is her dog now, she uses his bow [which Louis gave her], she becomes the leader. Clementine gets them to fight back, and when three of her people are captured, she doesn't cut her losses. She does what Marlon couldn't; "we're getting them back."
When she chooses Louis, he does for her what he never did for Marlon: he steps up.
Clementine proves she won't become Marlon just as she proves she won't become Minerva.
After getting James to agree to help them, Clementine and AJ talk about what to do if she ever gets bit. AJ says he'd want her to bite him, too. He repeats this sentiment after she's actually bitten, telling her he wants to stay and they could turn together, peacefully.
When Minerva confronts them on the bridge, she's dying... and she wants Tenn to die with her. She doesn't care who she has to kill in the process. She's more monster than human at this point, and most times, she succeeds.
They're both bitten. Clementine could've become a monster like Minerva in the end. She could've killed AJ, and they could've become walkers together. But she didn't. Minerva wanted Tenn to die for her, and Clementine wanted AJ to live for her.
Also, I should mention she has Minerva's axe. She carries the key weapons associated with Marlon and Minerva throughout different points in the game, further solidifying these connections. She uses Marlon's bow to save her friends, and she uses Minerva's axe to save AJ, who in turn uses it to save her.
What's also so interesting about this is how Marlon's alive in episode one, and Minerva is thought to be dead. Louis has his best friend, and Violet's lost hers. But, at the end of the episode, Marlon's dead and Minerva's revealed to be alive.
Marlon becomes the ghost, and Minerva becomes the monster. Clementine becomes to Louis and Violet what Marlon and Minerva never could... how does that not drive anyone else insane?
So, no. One is not objectively better, or more impactful, because of a connection to Marlon or Minerva. They're different. It just depends on which storyline you personally find more compelling.
Actually, let's talk about that a little more.
In my opinion, the most intriguing point of comparison between Louis and Violet stems from their perceptions of survival, and how that impacts Clementine.
An argument I see made against violentine is that Violet's boring because she and Clementine are too similar. This usually comes from clouis shippers who prefer the "opposites attract" dynamic Clementine and Louis have.
On the flip side, there's the counter argument that Louis is reckless, that he doesn't take survival as seriously as he should and Clementine wouldn't want him because of that.
These are interesting to me because I get where they're coming from... but they ultimately miss the point.
The other day, I replayed TFS. Except this time, I did something a little bit differently. I played my usual clouis route, but then I had the violentine route pulled up on my laptop so that I could watch these scenes, comparing them side by sideā¦ and something occurred to me.Ā
Louis is about challenging Clementine's perception of survival, and Violet is about validating it.
Louis challenges Clementine from the very moment we meet himāheās playing music. His initial philosophy on survival butts heads with Clementineās. The fact that hunting with him and Aasim challenges your perception of āyour choices have consequences.ā These games have conditioned the player to think along the lines of, āYeah, Louis is more funā¦ but if I donāt hunt with Aasim, we wonāt have any food.ā
Except thatās just it. I hate to say it, Aasim, but in the grand scheme of thingsā¦ hunting with you doesnāt matter. It's actually less rewarding. You know why? Because in the next section, we get food from the train station. It wouldāve been more beneficial to spend time with Louis over hunting, hence how he challenges you. Ā
This then primes you for the choice between choosing to follow Louis or follow Violet. I know people complain about how this is presented with Violet doing something productive [checking the walls] and Louis playing pianoā¦ but thatās the point. If youāre going through with Louisā full route, you need to meet him at his level, and in turn, he will meet you at yours. You need to accept the challenge, the idea that Clementine isnāt entirely right about the way sheās gone about survival.
Oh, and do I even need to mention the vote? The debate over Louisā vote is exhausting. Often times, people tell on themselves in how they talk about it. Itās not actually about the fact that he voted against them. If it was, these people would have a bigger bone with pick with Mitch, Willy, Ruby, and Omarā¦ and yet Louis is the one who takes all the blame as if heās the only one personally kicking them out.Ā
Louis is reacting to the death of his best friend, and the complicated feelings that come with it being caused by AJ. He wants accountability, even if he knows something's wrong. You can either agree with him that it was murder, and set AJ on the path of atonementā¦ or, you can double down and tell him to fuck off, AJ was justified.Ā
But hereās the thingā¦ the vote adds to the appeal of Louisā route. To someone who hates him, or at the very least is critical of his vote, that sounds mad or delusional.
Except itās really not.
Ever heard of a thing called tension? Because thereās a lot of it in ep2 between clouis + AJ and itās fantastic.
Yes, Louis voting them out is problematic because we need a problem to solve. We need something to feed the tension between him and Clementine. He stepped in front of a gun held by his best friend in order to protect her, forever changing their relationshipā¦ only for that to seemingly be taken away from us the moment AJ shoots Marlon.Ā
Yes, Louisā route is about being challenged, but itās also about challenging him. That heās able to forgive them, that heās able to question his own survival philosophy and understand theirs, that heās able to apologize and actually change for the betterā¦ that right there is what makes clouis so damn good.Ā
He becomes hardened whereas Clementine softens. By the end of the game, theyāre on a similar level now without neglecting their differences, and they can move forward together.Ā
Thatās what makes Louisā route appealingā¦ and itās also what makes it unappealing to people who prefer Violet.Ā
By contrast, Violetās already on Clementineās level when it comes to this perception of survival. She validates that Clementineās on the right path.
They have other similarities in the way that theyāre both female, queer, they both have a kid they look after, theyāre not always great with other people, etc.Ā
People who prefer Louis might consider this boring, but I think to Team Violet, itās comforting. Itās comforting to have a partner who takes this as seriously as you do, who wants to get shit done. Theyāre playing Clementine with a similar attitude, and donāt believe it needs to be challenged. Itās comforting to feel validated on something you already firmly believe in.Ā
We also see this if we compare the hunting and fishing scenes. You have to make an effort to choose Louis by choosing to neglect hunting, but the game makes you fish with Violet no matter what.
Violetās prioritizing fishing because they need food. Thatās what theyāve set out to do, so letās do it. The game is letting you know thatās the case, and if you value that, continue pursuing her.Ā
While fishing, they discuss why things are weird with her and Brody. Violet doesnāt take well to Clementineās blunt, āBecause you make it weird. Brody tries and you just make fun of her."
Thatās understandable because I think she already kind of knows why and is looking to have her feelings validated. She prefers it when Clementine suggests that itās because Brody never said sorry for what happened to the twins.Ā
Thereās also comfort and validation in the way Violet sides with Clementine and AJ after Marlonās death. She votes for them to stay, vocalizing how much she disapproves of the results. Thereās this feeling that I recognize from a lot of the sapphic romance I read; āitās you and me against the world, Iāll always have your back, even if youāre in the wrong, Iāll fight for you.ā
In our case, itās violentine + AJ against the rest of Ericson, save Tenn and Aasim. Violet validates that AJ was justified because Marlon was a liar and murderer, claiming that AJ and Clementine did nothing wrong. Violet fights to keep them.Ā
The tension between violentine in ep2 is different because instead of one pushing the other away, theyāre being forced apart by the vote and thereās nothing they can do about it. That tension is somewhat released when Clementine comes back and theyāre reunited, working out a plan to best defend the school.Ā
Itās also why Violetās presented as doing something productive when you follow her instead of Louis, and why she asks if you want to hang out after checking the defenses.Ā
All that being said, allow me to reiterate that one is not good and the other bad, they're different. These concepts of challenge and change/validation and comfort exist on a neutral road as diverging paths. Itās up to the player to pick what path they prefer, but that doesnāt mean the other path isnāt worth acknowledging or analyzing.Ā
I should also mention that theyāre not exclusive; there is overlap with validation being present in Louisā route and challenges in Violetās. Theyāre just more present in episodes 3 and 4 after weāve made our decision.Ā
There are several more examples of how this all fits together, buuuuutā
Yaāll wanna compare some allegories?
Those familiar with my content might already know where Iām going with this as Iāve made a post about Louis and the piano in the past.Ā
You see, I believe that there are allegories for Louis and Violetās hearts present in their routes: Louisā piano, and Violetās pin.Ā
I already have a thorough, in-depth analysis of Louis and the piano that you can read, so all Iāll say about it is that on the night of the raid, he asked Clementine to carve a piece of herself into his heart so that no matter what, their initials will be immortalized together in its woodā¦
And that makes me fucking feral.Ā
But I'm also so normal about it.
As for Violet, her heart is the star gazing pin she gives to Clementine. She gives it to her so sheāll always remember that nightā¦ but she doesnāt give it to her until after Clementineās saved her, and that fascinates me in the context of it being allegory.Ā
Louis asks Clementine to carve herself into his heart right before the raid, cementing that from that moment on, he is utterly devoted to her. I believe this is part of the reason why Louis is still happy to see her if heās the one whoās captured. Yes, yes, heās also incredibly traumatized from having his tongue cut out and heād be happy to see anyone, yada yadaā¦ but listen, if you romance Louis and heās captured, his heart remains with herāthat piano with their intitals is on full display. When he sees her, heās still so devoted to her that he refuses to accept that itās at all her fault. Even when she says it is, he shakes his head... and he so easily accepts her when theyāre together in the end. From the moment Clementine puts knife to wood, heās hers.Ā
Now, lookā¦ you might think Iām going somewhere not great with this but hear me out.Ā
I think after Clementineās gone star gazing with her, Violet is fully ready to give her heart to her. Yāknow, give her the pin. But, think about what Violet said about how people have left, but Clementine came back. Plus, with the impending raid to think about, maybe Violet should keep the pin until the right moment.Ā
I believe a key difference between her and Louis is that Violet needs one last thing to solidify that Clementineās the one.Ā
Louis gives her his heart prior to the raid because of everything thatās already gone down between them following Marlonās death. Violet needs to know that Clementineās willing to fight for her the way she fought before. When Clementine saves her from the raiders, itās solidified. Even after she sees Minerva again, it changes nothing.
Itās also worth noting that the pin is something Clementine wears. Like the piano carving, itās a piece on display for everyone to see, to let them know whose heart Clementine has.
Violet literally handed Clementine her heart as a means of saying, āIām yours. Iām devoted to you.āĀ
This is why romanced/captured Violet is devastating, and is why she behaves the way she does in the cells. She was so ready to give her heart away and then nope, sorry, Vi! You get knocked unconscious by raiders instead!Ā
If anything, you kind of deserve to be told to fuck off if you romanced her and then let her get captured. Just sayinā.Ā
Look, I have a lot of complicated feelings about the captured violentine route, mostly with Violet being as forgiving as she is after her eyes are burnedāyes, yes, I know, her eyes are burned and Minerva messed with her head so of course now sheās not hostile, yada, yada.Ā
But I think itās rather telling that you donāt get the pin in this route. Sure, Violetās willing to forgive and possibly pursue this romance in the futureā¦ but sheās not ready to hand over her heart, not truly. Not after everything thatās happened.Ā
And if you want to get extra angsty about it, imagine that Violet made the pin right after they parted ways, but before the raiders came. Meaning that if sheās captured, itās possibly still sitting somewhere, abandoned.Ā
Mmhmmm, very normal about this. I feel normal. My normalness about this continues... normally. I'm not losing my shit thinking about that. Nope. Why would I? I wouldn't! So normal.
Okay just let me talk about their reactions to Tenn's death and then I'll shut up.
This makes me want to gnaw my own foot off, I can barely handle it.
AJ shoots Tenn on the bridge because Clementine trusted him to make the hard calls. This saves Louis or Violet's life.
When Louis jumps across, he's completely silent as he watches Tenn die... and then he's pissed; "What the fuck?! How could you just shoot him like that?!"
AJ explains himself, that he did it for him, and Louis is so upset that he forces AJ to look at what he's done, to watch the walkers eat Tenn; "Tenn's dead. He's dead! Do you realize that?! Look! [...] He's... he's gone, because of you. Just fucking gone."
If Clementine says AJ saved his life, Louis says, "So what, we just cut him loose? Gun him down like he was nothing?"
If Clementine says nothing, Louis says, "Tenn was just a little boy!"
The reason Louis responds this way is because in this moment, he just relived Marlon's death all over again, but worse. So, SO much worse!
When Violet jumps across, she breaks down, begging, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God! No, no! No, no, no..." as she watches Tenn die... and then says to AJ, "No! What the fuck?! How could you do that?!"
AJ explains himself, that he did it for her, and Violet is faaaar from okay; "For me? I can't... Tenn is gone! That soft little boy who liked to draw, he's gone, because of you!"
If Clementine says AJ saved her life, Violet says, "You think that's okay?! Just gunning down one of our own?!"
And there it is.
Louis is hardened in this situation because he already went through this... Violet hasn't, not with AJ. She softened up throughout her route due to her relationships to him and Clementine... but this is the moment where she realizes that maybe AJ wasn't as justified as she believed, and this is the consequence.
This leads us to the ending where AJ asks if they're still mad about him killing Tenn, and I just... I'm biting my foot right now because the script has flipped.
Louis is forgiving and understanding. He's soft, he's sympathetic, he shakes AJ's hand to let him know that all is forgiven and they're okay; "I... AJ, I guess it's like... You saw something I didn't. About the situation, I mean. Minnie and the walkers and Tenn, it's just all this chaos in my head when I think back on it. [...] Clem says you saved my life? Well, then, that's exactly what you did. And how can I stay mad at anyone for doing that?"
Or, alternatively, "He was your friend, AJ. I know you are hurting just as much as I am."
As for Violet? She's understanding, too... but she's not quite ready to forgive yet; "The thing you said on the bridge...that he was messing up all the time. It wasn't something new, you know. Tenn got himself or other people into trouble all the time, long before you guys got here. He was always so lost. He lived in a world that just...isn't there, you know? And that's why I tried to look after him. But when I was pulling him away from the walkers, and Minnie, I could also see...he just wasn't there anymore."
"So you're mad, but sad."
"Can I be that for a while?"
And it's completely understandable that she's hurting and struggling with how she feels about AJ moving forward! She wants to be okay, she wants to forgive him, she just needs time.
Now, because I'm forever bitter, but I'm gonna mention this as well: whenever I see someone point at Violet's scene and say, "See!? This is how LOUIS should've acted in ep2!" like... they're telling on themselves again. Not just that they don't understand Louis as a character or his route, but that they don't fully grasp Violet's part in this either. Or time frames, for that matter.
Let me put it to you in simple terms... they react the same.
After Marlon and Tenn die, they're upset. They're pissed. They blame AJ and yell at him. After they've had time to process what happened [Louis after the two week time skip, Violet after time passes between the bridge and the ending] they share the same, "I'm still upset about Marlon/Tenn. Can I be that for a while and still be your friend?" sentiment.
The difference is that Louis is treated poorly for it because of the vote, and because we feel it first hand for longer... Violet got to grieve off screen and come back after she's sorted herself out.
It's a disservice to both of their characters because it's rooted in that same mentality that I criticized at the beginning: "This is why one is better than the other."
Do I need to say it again? I'm gonna say it again.
One is not good and the other bad. They're different.
There are so many fun discussions that could come from putting Louis and Violet side by side, and examining them. I haven't even covered the different ways they're introduced, or compared their ep3 dates to see what it says about them and the overall narratives! What about the cell scenes!? How they react when Dorian's about the cut off their fingers! The way they approach James upon meeting him!
That last one in particular is especially funny! They're all under stress about blending in with a herd of walkers to infiltrate a boat to save their friends, and yet Louis easily saunters up to the guy wearing walker skins with a smile, and makes him laugh by saying, "Functional and fashionable. I'll take two."
Violet approaches James like he's an injured wild animal that's going to bite her, and bless her heart, she tries with, "I, uhā¦ hey. Hey there, James. Sorry about Willy." Then James gives her this judgmental side-eye, like buddy? She's not the weirdo here.
There is so much potential to dissect here, and I want to see people do it... but I want them to do it fairly, in good faith.
I want to get away from the idea of comparing them to "prove" which is better because there is no objective better. There isn't! That's a waste of time!
I'm so done with The Debateā¢; it's unhelpful, it's annoying, and it's boring as shit. I've heard it all before, and you probably have, too.
I want to put Louis and Violet under a microscope and study them with the thought process of, "one does this and the other does that... what does it mean!? what does it say about the narrative!? Oh my god, they have the same opinion on this thing, WRITE THAT DOWN!"
So yeah, that's my ramble for the night.
I'm gonna go replay TFS for further research.

just accidentally stumbled on an egwene hate reddit thread and everyone was bitching about how she tries to act like rand's equal when she's only the second-most powerful authority figure on the continent, and one sane person was like "well, balance was a huge theme of the series, so it's pretty clear that RJ did consider the dragon and the amyrlin two halves of a whole and that rand is meant to be egwene's equal co-authority rather than her superior" and of course they were downvoted to hell. and this one little thread just really epitomizes how the readers who approach WOT as a male power fantasy just fundamentally will never understand the series and its themes and the story it was ACTUALLY telling.
#and probably also why they hate the show so much and insist it's nothing like the books#because the show is telling the same story the books were telling#but this medium makes it harder for you to ignore the story being told and convince yourself the version you made up is what's there#wot#wot book spoilers#and of course that thread was full of takes like 'the point is to show that egwene=tuon and amyrlin seat=crystal throne#and the white tower is just as bad as the seanchan and everyone should shut up and listen to rand'#and 'egwene was an abusive bully and thank god she died in TLB or the world would've been screwed in the fourth age'#UGH#and even the argument of people trying to be more ~fair~ is just 'egwene's a terrible person but a great character'#UGH!!!! she is literally one of the most morally righteous people in the series#and her bad moments are nowhere near as bad or as numerous as the war crimes rand pulls#yet no one ever doubts that RAND is ultimately a good person who stumbled here and there#(ig maybe egwene's TAR nynaeve thing is worse than anything rand did? but it's also abundantly clear that RJ had no idea HOW bad it was#so i take that moment with a bit of a grain of salt since i really don't think he grasped the severity of what he wrote there#and if he had he very likely would have written it differently)

i might just be pulling this out of my ass but i feel like terezi and gamzee really did a lot of damage to how people see pitch relationships
and i get it, terezi and gamzeeās relationship was basically everything people say about pitch relationships. it was abusive, horrible, and enabled by everyone around them
but theyāre also not the only pitch relationship we see in the comic, or even the only pitch relationship we see terezi get into
and theyāre not even the only abusive and/or toxic relationship we see by far, and plenty of those werenāt pitch
#idk i feel like a lot of the arguments i see for why pitch romance is toxic apply to terezi and gamzee specifically#and not really to anyone else#and it kind of ignores the fact that homestuck is a comic filled to the brim with terrible relationships#say what you will about vriska (she got way too much hate)#but vriska and tavros was an abusive situation#and even if they were all over the place when it comes to quadrants#ultimately vriska wanted him red and it was red feelings she was dealing with#similarly dirkjake is red#say what you will about that shit too#and whether you think they can patch that up or not or who was at fault or whatever#iām not asking for a five page essay on how dirk was perfect or how dirk was the devil lol#but they were a mess#and they were also very much red#aranea and jake#vriska and meenah#meulin and kurloz arent dating anymore but were red#honestly there are too many examples with the dancestors you get what i mean by this point#there are so many examples i can list#and also examples of good or at least not toxic pitch relationships i could list#but these tags are already way too long#i think ultimately#hussie probably just likes the drama of a bad relationship#so there are tons of them#which is fair lol

breaking a blog policy of non-engagement with active discourse unless explicitly asked about it,, below the cut,, I intend this to be a one-off thing, look away
seen some snarking about this article on the race dot com about where marc fits into the current title fight, and specifically this paragraph:
because ofc it's some kind of grievous sin to equate the current two title contenders with the two title contenders in 2015, one of whomst was well past his prime and the other who in many ways had a deeply untidy season. the argument might be that the current spec ducati has a bike advantage over marc, which. you'll never guess how the 2015 yamaha measured up against the 2015 honda. and yeah, it sure is embarrassing how the current title contenders chuck away bucket loads of points through sheer stupidity. after all, when racing in the wet in misano, it's unforgivable to pit at the wrong time and emerge with only one point - why not simply crash and emerge from that weekend with zero points instead? imagine finishing second behind marc in those conditions, when you could instead swap bikes far too late and finish a lowly fifth
it's worth putting that paragraph in context of what the piece was actually saying:
all of this is categorically true. it doesn't mean marc might not still win this year's championship if both jorge and pecco make enough mistakes, but quite obviously those two are closer to the 2015 title contenders than 2017. in the former, marc could not bank on a consistent pace advantage, in the latter he could; this feels like quite a straightforward point to be making. dovi's phillip island stinker did kill his championship momentum - and given the sheer consistency of performances jorge and pecco have put in when it comes to their pace, it would be very surprising to see an equivalent from those two. don't even get me started on whatever the fuck maverick vinales was doing that year after like,, the first five races, which lack of a dominant bike is quite frankly not enough to excuse. the rest of the article assesses marc's chances entirely fairly, essentially expanding on the argument that you just wouldn't expect that kind of consistent performance edge that he would need to overturn the points deficit. (I personally think marc is a little more likely to be a title threat than the author of the article does, though I also don't fundamentally disagree with anything specific being said; mainly I just feel vibes-wise that sprint races have made title fights insanely volatile.) he could still win - but in terms of how he compares to the opposition, there is no argument whatsoever to be made that this is not closer to 2015 than 2017. even if you believe this is only due to bike difference, in which case I think you are possibly giving 2017 dovi and vinales a little too much credit, the points raised in the article still stand up to scrutiny
it is perhaps inevitable that people will deify the greats of the past - even more so if they dislike the top riders of the present and feel that they are undeserving of their current success. it does, however, seem to come along with a skewed understanding of the actual greats in question, of where they were strong and where they faltered. valentino and lorenzo had two title fights, both of which were error-strewn affairs and hardly their best seasons. sprints have helped further distort perceptions of how error-prone these current riders really are, because at the end of the day neither martin nor pecco are on course for a radically different error rate than the title contenders in 2009. lorenzo lost his head in jerez when he was the pre-race favourite and ended up crashing trying to overcompensate for his surprisingly poor pace, valentino had an absolute howler at le mans that makes misano this year from martin look like a paragon of good decision-making and composure under pressure, jorge practically handed the championship to valentino with back-to-back dnf's at donington and brno, valentino incidentally also crashed at donington and got extremely lucky to have a bike that was still rideable to fifth, then proceeded to just chuck it for absolutely no reason at indy with a mistake that was so obviously stupid and needless he showed up to misano with a donkey helmet. valentino followed up misano with a poor fourth in estoril because he got lost with the set-up that weekend - and buddy, if you think the gp24 bike advantage is bad, let me tell you a story about how yamaha/ducati/honda were doing back in the day compared to the field. fourth might as well have been last. (I don't love single manufacturer domination either, but let's not pretend like the gaps between bikes aren't way, way, way smaller than they were in '09.) then jorge, with momentum and opportunity on his side, gets so spooked by valentino's pace in practise he bins it on the very first lap of phillip island, essentially ending the championship fight then and there. neither of them deliver a particularly dignified performance in sepang. during this title fight, there were three instances of crashing out of the lead and one from a very close second. jorge martin and pecco bagnaia eat your hearts out
and 2015? the season that was actually being referenced in the championship? valentino was only in that championship fight due to his relentless consistency, a handful of starring performances and an ability to not completely fuck it when a few rain drops started falling. his pace was flat-out not good enough to be a title contender - if anything, on raw pace he was more competitive for a big chunk of 2016 than he had been the year before. he was qualifying abysmally in an era where the gaps between bikes were considerably larger, reflecting a far poorer performance than equivalent grid positions would nowadays, and certainly would have nothing to counter the consistency in qualifying the two title contenders this year have demonstrated. jorge had to work hard to come as close to losing that championship as he did, going through a bizarre and borderline embarrassing set of helmet visor issues early on in the season that he should never have allowed to happen. he was peak metronome that year, able to dominate and win from the front but otherwise rife with limitations, repeatedly performing poorly when he was put ever so slightly off-balance. in many ways, he got very lucky to not be penalised more for his horrendous silverstone performance. he was also helped by the gap between the factory yamahas and hondas to the field being so large, because otherwise some of his inconsistency would have cost him a hell of a lot more. both of their seasons had laughably obvious flaws that just about managed to offset each other's enough to make a title decider possible - but if you ever so slightly change the formula, if the qualifying format had still been different or the bike disparities larger or smaller or any of that, it would have probably tipped it quite strongly one way or the other. a battle of the titans it was not
none of this is to say that valentino or jorge are shit riders, or that marc is a fraud for letting himself be so thoroughly beaten by them in 2015 on what was ultimately still a competitive bike. at a certain point, however, you are comparing the current athletes with versions of the past greats who quite frankly did not exist 90% of the time. if you are sufficiently motivated, you can come up with pretty decent slander for anyone. it is also presenting an idealised version of the sport in the past that, again, did not exist. while the gp24's advantage over the field is substantial, if we are talking in terms of raw lap times, it is substantially less so than the gap the top few factory teams had in the past. the aliens did not dominate from 2007 to 2015 to the extent that they did because they were just so brilliant - they were performing at a high level, yes, but also nobody else really stood a chance. as hard as it may be to accept, when you have riders who so consistently have a pace advantage as pecco and martin do, including over the fellow riders on the same machinery, it is possible they may simply be doing an actual good job. and the more pecco adds to his resume, the more difficult it will become to not consider him in the same tier of rider as at least some of the aliens. yes, I am talking about lorenzo here - a man who incidentally did not convincingly pass the 'only good with one manufacturer' test that's already being dangled in front of pecco. if we really want to go into the weeds, it's worth pointing out that pecco's luck has also not been particularly fantastic this year, from mechanical gremlins at the le mans sprint to being wiped out by binder at the jerez sprint to the qualifying position at aragon working against him and losing out quite severely in what are at worst 60:40 racing incidents twice this season - sometimes, you do get punished a lot for relatively minor missteps. so yeah, if you want to compare the current trio of title contenders with anyone, then 2015 feels as good a place as any. sometimes the greats of the past did suck, idk what to tell you. they would be a hell of a lot more boring if they hadn't
#been very disciplined about this. will make one exception and then not post about it again#edited to hopefully tone it down a bit lol#//#brr brr#current tag#mayhaps a dumb thing to care about but. is it really fair to just cut one paragraph that's meant to be read as part of an argument#whether you agree with said point or not#having to preemptively guard every sentence against the worst faith interpretation is the enemy of good writing#the other rough one is posting out of context crash dot net headlines that are peddling three month old clickbait#all fun and games but it's just bad media hygiene. take the 2 minutes to hunt down the original interview and the context of the responses

there is something so. intensely frustrating about feeling incapable of showing up for people the way that they want you to
#i wish people understood that it's so hard to be present in their lives and that closeness for me isnt about frequency of contact#but how open we feel during that contact#my brain is such a difficult place to live in it is so loud and so busy all the time#24 hours a day is a constant monologue and argument with myself for everything and it means that i just dont have the capacity to talk to#others most of the time#and like. i know this is so unreasonable. obviously we have to be present in the lives of people that care for us#but it just feels like every day i have to like. get on a stage and perform to every person in my life that cares about me so i can meet the#criteria of being a Good Friend or Good Girlfriend or Good Fan Artist or Good Mutual or Good Server Member#i feel like it is such a blessing to be seen by others as someone to expect things from#but as more people have started to love me it feels like i have to 'go out and perform' more and more and i am very exhausted#i wish i was someone that was easy to love and care for in the way that i am. and i dont mean that self deprecatingly it's just#i know im very hard to care about and love. because i disappear all the time and come back in a big flurry as soon as i get the energy back#and im just feeling it a Lot More lately because im starting to think this isnt going to be a short term thing i have to do before i start#feeling comfortable with a person#this is going to be my whole life#if i get married im going to have to 'go out and perform' and be a good wife and be affectionate and happy and not closed into my own brain#for days#if im going to make friends with colleagues I'll have to go out when they invite me and have to reply ro their texts and i cant just go#silent for weeks while i try to negotiate with my thoughts and then reappear once i make the slightest breakthrough#im very tired and sad. i want companionship but i feel like the kind of person i am is not fair for people who would be my companion#vent post#ā”alizeh talksā”

my honest reaction
#once again the trailer just kind of makes me feel nothing but confusion at why theyre doing things the way they are#why is gerald still alive. even if it turns out to be time travel or him being frozen alongside shadow or something#it still takes away a lot of the emotional impact of shadows story ... why .....#the fact that theyre just seemingly having gerald be rouge's replacement in the dark story trio too???? what. thats stupid .#and speaking of rouge. where are rouge and amy. ive never seen a single good argument to justify their exclusion here#why is the only girl character from the games whos present the one who famously dies horribly for male characters' motivation#(to be clear im not saying the way maria's death is handled in the games is bad writing or anything#just that having her be the only girl character to have a movie counterpart is certainly A Choice.)#and. why are team sonic (and human characters associated with them who are supposed to be the good guys) working with gun .#gun literally does nothing but cause problems for sonic in sa2 ?!?!?!??!?!#even if it does turn out theyre not being completely honest with sonic about what shadow's whole deal is thats still. why ...#i wasnt expecting an exact recreation of sa2 but that doenst mean i have to be okay with every possible change they make either#especially when a lot of this stuff just actively makes the story worse. sa2 im so sorry they did this to you#honestly probably wouldnt bother me quite as much if this was a comic or tv show or something#and not . a big popular movie that is probably going to overshadow the game in a lot of peoples minds. ughhhh#also shadow has still only had a couple lines so maybe its not fair for me to say anything just yet#but i dont . really like how he sounds from what we've heard .. why did the ycast keanu reeves this sucks#idris elba as knuckles is starting to annoy me too tbh . like i didnt care for it at first but then it grew on me#and now im back to not really liking it . that is NOT knuckles#anyway. im honestly struggling to understand how so many fans of the games are uncritically excited about the movie ?#and dont have any problem with the writing choices being made here.. ?#do they just not care how shadow's story is portrayed as long as he looks cool doing it .. ?#im not saiyng the people who are excited are fake fans i just . dont get it

the rookie let women make mistakes challenge
#listen I adore all the female characters on the rookie#when nyla and james argue james is almost always painted as the one in the wrong#it's starting to shift this season which is great but it's not perfect#lucy makes mistakes which I love but a lot of people don't really acknowledge them/how they can help her grow#don't even get me started on wopez (which to be clear I have the most examples on because I love them)#in the episode they first meet argues with wesley just as much as he with her but he apologizes#when wesley wants another kid and angela doesn't (which is totally fair and valid on her part) it's kind of treated like he's a fool and#doesn't get an opinion (not that he has a say over her body but just being honest - part of being in a relationship and having kids is both#making decisions)#when wesley is nervous about what wealth will do to their kids it's dismissed 90% of the time#when wesley hires charlie it's automatically suspicious and awful to do#angela hasn't really been wrong in their arguments since 2x01 and even then it was a compromise thing#I love wopez they're my favorites but the writing does wesley dirty sometimes xdd#also bailey doesn't need an explanation lol#girl has been good at 99% of everything ever and it's a fun gag sure but it's also sighh sometimes#anyway#the rookie#wopez#jayla#angela lopez#lucy chen#nyla harper#bailey nune

anyone else hate the way that physical books are treated like sacred objects
look at me. youāre allowed to exist and have a physical impact on things and leave a mark on the world in whatever way that looks like
#like i know some people love to treat them as symbols of intellectual superiority but also has an element of ocd to it im not gonna lie#itās ok if you write in a book or dog ear the pages or show signs that you existed to read it#feel like most people dont even examine why they feel this way but every so often ill see an argument about preservation#as someone who (very briefly) studied old books in college and would love the opportunity to one day do more#the books with marginalia. the ones that had been re-bound. the ones that had been lived in and āabusedā#were SO much more characterful and interesting#but also i promise you no one will give a shit that thereās another pristine copy of a second third fourth printing of percy jackson#and i get it. sometimes youāre just getting a book for class and youāll need to sell it back afterward and you want to keep it in good con#thatās fine. i appreciate that. i feel like most of the books i got for school were on the fair to poor scale#my mom is one of those people who is afraid to use anything in case it looks used and she canāt resell it and iām like.then whatās the point#she sent me a video of someone re-binding a book and went āi could see you doing that if you had a second copy!!ā why#if something moved me enough to want to celebrate it by personalizing it. why do i need to also have a pristine version#this way of treating books just feels so performative and exhausting yknow#idk#mine

We need to start treating bad writing like bad art and im not kidding
#now theres a lot more nuance to this#because ābad writingā is SUPER general#so i have to add a disclaimer#i dont mean propoganda. i dont mean biased and biggoted#i mean writing decisions u dont like!#ppl are very quick to just sit there and shit on writers#its okay to not like an ending. its okay to not like how a character was treated#and its okay to be mad about it if u like them very dearly#but at the same time sometimes we're a little too mean.#and sometimes they deserve it#but sometimes it's a little mean#this is. in truth. because of the lumine ending#on webtoon#its pissing me off how ppl are getting super upset and being rude to kabu#even tho so many ppl are explaining its because she grew out of the story. she didnt have passion for it anymore#she gave us an ending! you dont have to like it but stop acting like just because she COULD write more that she HAS to write more#art is tiring. sometimes you lose passion for it. sometimes you dont do it perfectly#sometimes your idea of good isnt the same as someone else's#i dont like romance for example. several tropes will turn me off it#but some ppl do#sometimes you make a pretty shitty plot or make plot holes#and yeah those arent super great to read!!! but a story is an art. its all different#its not all good and its not all bad#its made from a persons head therefore it'll reflect a person in a way#i just think its important to remember that writers are not machines#artists and writers aren't actually as different as everyone treats them#we're all making art. we're all making mistakes. i just think we should be a little nicer about it#its okay to criticize. but can we be nice about it#also i dont like the āprofessional authorā argument#picasso was a famous artist his paintings are in meuseums and there's still people who don't like his art. i dont think its fair to go

SvS is great because Janus's argument is simultaneously so well crafted and also so deceptive and manipulative. Look at him go. He really fits the lawyer role to a tee
#he runs circles around thomas while interrogating him and its insane to watch#and then he's like 'the only reason you don't speed is to avoid a ticket'#and cuts off thomas when he tries to go 'or maybe its because i donāt want to die in a fucking car crash'#the whole max stirner bit is really good too cause again it's so well presented and you wanna be like ok ok go off#but then its like oh ur just gonna gloss over the relevant details of him not practicing what he preached? for the sake of ur argument? ok#+his reaction to thomas saying the trial is unfairly set up is basically just 'uhhhh ok but its not that serious though'#as if he didnt set up the entire scenario in the first place and give a whole ass Joker monologue at the witness stand like ok sure buddy#i love him he's so slippery and slimy and manipulative and charismatic#the anti hero ever#i think patton not knowing wtf he was doing also made janus look a lot smarter by comparison to be fair#he also ran circles around patton to the point where patton's interrogation of him straight up ended with janus interrogating patton instea#janus sanders#sanders sides#selfishness vs selflessness#ts janus#deceit sanders#ts deceit#and yes this is subtle lawyer shade LMAO#ive never met a lawyer that wasnt shady and corrupt af

the autism has been winning
#theres been a lot of arguments#and I'm the cause of all of them#firstly cause my brother doesnt help out to the same degree i do around the house#and when i point it out its causing arguments#because its not fair to my mum to have to do more because he's not doing his jobs#and im not going to do them because that defeats the point of him having jobs to do#so that improved for like a day and then he immediately went back to gaming all day and not doing anything#and then secondly every conversation i have with my mum feels like shes just misunderstanding me on purpose#shes not but also we're not on a good communication level#and then i try to explain what I'm saying and she takes that as having a go at her#or āgoing on aboutā something when I've said like two sentences because i was explaining#i feel like she hates being around me sometimes#we constantly oscillate between being nice and arguing (because she doesnt understand me)#anyway i don't think the weather getting colder and daylight savings have helped#now i think we fall into the big grief depression of winter 2024#I'll let you know how it goes

There is no Official Capcom Game Canonā¢ hair for Bass. No unused design sketches or character art that has been released. Nothing even from canon-adjacent licensed games.
But I wonder if it might exist? Because weāve seen his hair across various comics, and while āManga / Comic & Cartoons Canonā is not āOfficial Game Canonā¢ā ...weirdly enough itās been consistent, especially compared to, yāknow, Blues. (Blues, who 100% had a game canon hairstyle from his debut in MM3.)
Classic Rockās hairstyle is drawn really uniformly. Sometimes itās black, sometimes itās brown, sometimes itās desaturated navy blue, but itās always a dark color and even with radically different art styles his hair still has the same basic, well, shape.
The same goes for Bass! Arigaās sketch isnāt even canon for Gigamix, and we only see some hair poking out of his broken helmet in Archie comics. But like Rock, the style is consistent, and both times itās colored in, his hair is dark. (The sketch is just not colored in. It could be light, it could be dark. Thereās also a sketch of Blues on the same page... his hair isnāt colored in either.)
The Rockman & Forte manga ran from April 1998 to January 1999. From what I can gather, the āBurning Shotā short is from 1998.
Rockman Gigamix was published in 2009. The sketch Hitoshi Ariga drew of helmetless Forte was at FanExpo Canada, August 2010.
Archie's Worlds Collide crossover ran from April to August 2013.
Itās entirely possible that Kouji Izuki came up with something for the gameās manga adaption, and when asked about it on the spot Ariga drew from that, and then Archie comics kept what was previously done by the manga artists. Especially given how Archie loved to pack in references to other Mega Man āverses.
Conversely, any one of them couldāve gone with whatever unique design they wanted, and they didnāt. I think itās possible that the artists and writers producing licensed franchise spin-offs might have had access to unreleased āseries bibleā material that we the public will never get to see because Capcom has totally forgotten this character exists in the first place. So the real question is: after Novas Aventuras, did Capcom have the wherewithal to go āhey maybe we should lay down some guidelines on how these characters are depictedā?
(Quick comparison of how helmet failure is shown for both characters in Archie comics. Rockās hair is disheveled from the fight, yet still the right style and color.)
#mega man#mega man bass#rockman forte#rockman#bass#text post#analysis#musings#jixie rambles#hairstyles#(I think they also know what blues' REAL eye color is)#(maybe it is red I just... have trouble taking xdive's word for it)#(even in a demi-canon context)#(ANYHOW)#(there's my argument for dark hair)#(in the interest of fairness I will reblog the argument for blond hair)#(which is pretty good actually but also relies on canon adjacent material)#(thank you for coming for my TED talk)

My roommate and I had a conversation last night and I keep rotating it in my brain and I Donāt Like It
#blue chatter#they called me a resilient person. and no the fuck I am not. I break down so easily over everything and my body is falling apart on me.#I scream in terror when someone knocks on the door too hard the fuck you mean Iām good at handling adversity#I pointed out that I freak out whenever my grade gets low even a little bit#and they were just sitting there like āyeah. and then you pick yourself up again and you do the work.ā#and no? not always? oftentimes I give up and donāt try hard enough to fix it and let points go that I could have earned#I barely ever go for extra credit opportunities and Iāve never gone to office hours of my own free will#I canāt even think about talking to a professor about a bad grade without wanting to cry? hello?#but they were insistent that even with those things I am still managing Incredibly Well in class given the circumstances. which made me#uncomfortable. like. I donāt think of myself as resilient At All and I feel a bit like Iām lying or tricking them.#I start shaking like a chihuahua when people are upset and Iām In The Vicinity. even when theyāre clearly not upset with me.#I really struggle to advocate for myself ever and even when I do I usually feel guilty and walk it back partway so I donāt cause a fight#and I always get way too emotional for the situation when someone has anything theyāre upset with me for. which isnāt fair to them bc I need#to be able to take constructive criticism without taking it as a personal attack on me.#like what the fuck do you mean *resilient*. I canāt even handle seeing a bug flying near my face or getting a B in a class. or being told#that I did something wrong. Iām actually significantly worse at handling adversity than I used to be. high school me was a resilientish kid.#and itās not like I was ever *good* at handling my emotions. even when it was essential for my safety. Iāve always cried way too easily#even when it actively made the situation I was in Much Worse. even when I knew better.#I would get angry and scared and sad and start shaking and crying and even screaming at my parents when they were mad at me even though#I knew that it would always make my life much worse. and extend an already beleaguered argument.#I brought this up with my therapist and she was like āwell. anybody would have done that if they were treated like you wereā.#which. okay. maybe so. I still feel like I should have been able to handle it and just shut up and move on and not make it worse.#but I am aware that this is probably a cognitive distortion. even so. that definitely doesnāt make me resilient.#I just. I feel gross being called resilient. Iām not. Iām weak and easily scared and unable to handle even small amounts of adversity.#the fuck is my roommate even *seeing*.#the annoying part is that theyāre generally an insightful person about other people and I know logically that theyāre probably right#which is why Iām not going to complain any more about this to their face bc I should just drop it and not make it a Thing#I talk too much about myself and my problems anyway. not every conversation has to be about my brain worms.#but the discomfort is Distinct and Unpleasant. and now Iām just having to sit with it. and Feel Uncomfortable. and try to accept what was#definitely intended as a compliment. I know itās draining to talk to someone who doesnāt accept any of the kind things you say about them.
