Jace put Alec first when Alec got attacked by a forsaken, when he had to use his parabatai connection in parabatai lost, and now. it’s really not that special if we are 23 episodes and he’s only been caring to Alec in three major ones. while Alec always knows something is wrong with Jace and has put him first many more times

also Alec is just holding a weapon and he’s the hottest on the show this isn’t up for debate

Worm Cast Impressions (Arcs 1 to 7)

Easy money says some of these characters are about to fucking die so I'm pausing now to jot down my impressions of everybody who's managed to make an impact (and one or two characters whose lack of impact is kind of impressive)

Undersiders

Taylor Hebert: Character of all time. Simultaneously sanest and least sane person in the entire universe. Deeply concerned about keeping hold of her moral core, constantly innovating in ways to inflict violence on her enemies real and imagined. Has never fully finished thinking her actions through once in her entire life, people keep thinking she's the most cautious girl they know. Her first kiss was partly because she liked the boy and partly because she wanted to piss off her bully. I am cheering for her more often than not and I am so scared of what this story is going to do to her.

Brian Laborn: I want to study him in a lab. Team leader entirely by default, as near as I can tell. Hates using violence as a means of control, really good at using violence as a means of control, seems to default to using violence as a means of control when he's upset. I don't think he's normal about women. Desperately trying to be so so so boring, thinks he's perfectly rational even though he is just as unhinged as his teammates, I suspect that he has built a mental prison with twenty layers of protection around all thoughts that would suggest he is anything other than Normal and Strong and Reliable. Maybe turned on by efficient displays of violence?

Lisa Wilbourn: She is so charming and I am so scared of what's actually going on in her head. I think Taylor's best friend but definitely her biggest enabler. Stop lying and let me know what is going on in your head, I know more about Alec and Rachel than I know about you. Concerned that she's only nominally concerned about Coil being a heinous fucker. Desperately hoping the air can be cleared so I stop worrying about whether she's going to destroy Taylor or something. She has to know Taylor is a wannabe hero.

Alec: The fact that he's really only done one thing that I consider morally in the wrong is kind of incredible when looking at the fact that he's a recovering sex cult enforcer who started living something approaching a normal human life as a homeless preteen. He's had three years to jury rig a sense of humanity and morality mostly on his own and the end result is a selfish lazy jerk, and yet the fact that this is what he's managed to come up with on his own is, without sarcasm, worthy of a fucking prize. He's actually really good at this all things considered. Actually a little bummed that he didn't oppose Coil for the whole Dinah creepfest.

Rachel Lindt: Rachel Lindt is maybe the best character so far. Autistic dog girl who only tolerates human society so she can better feed and care for her animals. I'd say something like "I'd kill for her" but there's no way I could do that any better than her dogs and she'd call me stupid. Only thing against her at this point is the slur usage, which is rough to deal with, but I suspect part of that is just being written in 2011.

Loved Ones

Danny Hebert: You sad bastard. Please survive long enough to reconcile with your daughter. I know he can't provide any material support for the problems his daughter has been dealing with, that the bullies are too well-protected and there's basically nothing that he can do about parahuman shit, but I wish she would allow him to be there for her. Maybe he'd be uncool about it, sure, but maybe not. Makes me sad to think about.

Aisha Laborn: This girl is in dire need of someone to have her back and also, like, pay attention to her; Brian is the closest one to actually doing it but I don't think his best efforts are enough. I know she's gonna be an Undersider in the future so hopefully I get to have a more thorough impression of her, and one that's not marred by the fucking Mercedes metaphor, Jesus Christ that was a rough passage to get through.

Protectorate

Armsmaster: I'd probably like him more if he wasn't so up his own ass about being in charge and earning glory. My suspicion is that he's basically a good guy with some bad habits that nobody can check him on, which has spiraled out of control. Might unironically consider a teenage criminal his nemesis, which is funny but not a great sign of his priorities.

Miss Militia: My prior complaints about her possibly inappropriate response to holding Regent hostage are entirely subsumed by the fact that the last twenty-six years of her life have been lived on terms set by the Protectorate. She was nearly devoured by the machinery of empire and now she's become a component of empire that feeds upon others, and she hasn't even realized it. She never had a goddamn chance.

Velocity: Nothing to really say about him, except there has to have been a way to design his costume so that a teenager with unaugmented strength couldn't take him out with a single blow to the testicles.

Assault and Battery: The name theming feels a bit weird (what, if they got a third would their name be Coercion?) but whatever. I like the idea of a duo with complementary powers, I guess, but there's not really much else here.

Dragon: On the one hand she's in charge of the Birdcage and is friends with Armsmaster, but on the other hand she clearly hates the Birdcage for what it's made her complicit in, and maybe Armsmaster is good to have as a friend. Jury's out, unlike on Canary.

Wards

Gallant: The best way I can think to describe this guy is "blandly nice." It's like if "inoffensive" could be a personality trait. Glory Girl could do better than him, probably, but to be fair she could also do a lot worse.

Clockblocker: I think he's the funny one? Or at least the deliberately unserious one, which is the same thing. The first character confirmed to have developed entomophobia as a result of Skitter, probably not the last. Stopped a bomb from destroying the East Coast which feels like it should get more attention.

Vista: World's most powerful thirteen-year-old. Who deployed her to stop that bomb and fight those Nazis. I want names.

Kid Win: No sense of proportion on this kid, my god. Shooting a laser cannon meant to deal with threats that are theoretically rated higher than Lung into a bank filled with hostages? He's lucky nobody died.

Shadow Stalker: What the actual fuck is going on with her. Who hunts other human beings with broadhead arrows? That's for making someone bleed to death. If she was doing it to the fucking Nazis then that'd be fine, but no, it's Grue and Taylor we've either seen or heard about her getting rough with. Either the Protectorate knows she's a maniac and is letting it rock until she gets herself caught, or else they don't realize what she's doing in which case someone is not doing their job.

Browbeat: Absolute nonentity, to the point it's almost distracting. The description of the bank fight suggests he lost to Regent, which I think means that Regent got close enough to a guy with super strength to knock him out with a taser and didn't get his block knocked off. No wonder the Protectorate wants to trade him out, dude's got nothing going on.

PRT

Director Piggot: I don't like the organization she works for, because the vibes beyond the city level feel rancid, but for Piggot I mostly just sympathize with her. She's trying to corral a bunch of teenagers and adults, who all have some kind of horrific trauma shaping them and also giving them powers that are baseline as dangerous as a fucking gun, into something resembling a fully effective government agency, with no signs of support from the other cities or the higher-ups despite the fact that the literal fucking Nazis have her heroes outnumbered and have apparently had it that way for decades. Let this woman take a vacation or something.

New Wave

Glory Girl: Absolute nerd who seems to love being a superhero, and also making Nazis ragdoll in her spare time. I'd love to end it there, but unfortunately she's got some bad habits; girl desperately needs to kill the cop in her brain and get her impulsiveness under control, the fact that she ragdolled the Nazi on accident and threatened to pull favors in the judicial system to send a first-time offender (and Tattletale) into the Birdcage don't reflect great on her ability to keep a lock on things in high-stress situations.

Panacea: Pathetic girl who is clearly sitting on a pressure cooker of issues. I know what those all are but I'm not going to comment on any of it until we're actually there. For now it's mostly just a pity thing.

Azn Bad Boys

Lung: I was harsh on his characterization at first but I'll admit with time and context I'm not nearly as quick about that. He definitely still sucks, the guy literally murders his lieutenant as a matter of bruised pride and making his life more convenient. Also still cannot shake the feeling that he was basically idling in Brockton Bay for most of his career with the kind of power he has on tap.

Bakuda: She's a monster, but that also kind of oversimplifies things. She's clever, arrogant, grandstanding, and gleefully violent, even as she has the capacity to admire the architecture that another Tinker has crafted and to treat Lung as something resembling a friend. I don't think there's a world where she triggers and is, like, a good person, but I think this was one of the worse lives she could have wound up living. Also, y'know, she's dead.

Empire Eighty-Eight

Kaiser: Rancid smug piece of Nazi shit. Stupid too btw, why are you bothering with street-level robberies and extortion when you own a fucking pharmaceutical corporation? Why are you fighting out in the streets and meeting with other Nazi capes when you could be acting through proxies and bankrolling far-right parahuman cells across the country? Like I'm glad he isn't smart enough to think like that but fuck me.

Purity: Like, actually for real dumb as a bag of hammers. Kaiser barely has to try to wrap her back around his finger and she divorced him; Tattletale barely has to try to get her to back down and she thinks Tattletale exposed her identity to the public. Truly nothing in that skull of hers.

Stormtiger: Nazi capes fuck off

Cricket: Nazi capes fuck off

Coil: Everything about this guy just pisses me the fuck off honestly. He presents himself as some kind of lesser evil, a firm but gentle hand that can guide all facets of the city to a brighter future, but he doesn't have the intelligence or vision to back any of it up; he displays nothing but brute force manipulation tactics involving bribery and blackmail, he's tunnel-visioned and cruel to the point that it ruins his own long-term plans, and before I forget everything about his thing with Dinah gives me fucking hives and I want to beat his skull in with my bare hands. I hope Taylor gets to kill him. Oh, or maybe Dinah.

Nameless sniper: Actively cooler and more competent than Coil.

Travelers

Trickster: genuinely cannot trust a man wearing a top hat in the year 2011, not even as a bit

Sundancer: what the fuck went so wrong with your life that your power is The Fucking Sun

Faultline and Co.

Faultline: Ironically not a super strong read off of her in terms of personality. Seems generally pretty cool going off of how she interacts with and leads her team. Very funny that she has a rivalry with Tattletale.

Newter: Little worried that he's selling his body secretions as a drug to other teenagers but if a parahuman only has one red flag that's pretty good actually

Gregor the Snail: This dude rocks, actually, love the vibes he gives off. Shame that people hate him for being fat and a mutant.

Labyrinth: Would like to see more of her when she's back in reality, otherwise not much to go off of. Cool power.

Other Parahumans

Scion: Fucking creepy

Marquis: probably Panacea's dad, calling that shot.

Paige McAbee: Justice For Paige McAbee.

Dinah Alcott: not really a character yet so much as a particularly horrifying MacGuffin but Jesus Christ what an awful fate

Uber and Leet: Gamers should be more oppressed. Also they beat the shit out of sex workers on a livestream and aren't considered serious enough threats to be consigned to the Birdcage, which feels pretty bad.

Heartbreaker: Haven't even met this guy and he sounds fucking awful. Please god somebody take him down.

Normal Humans

Emma Barnes: I need to understand what's wrong with her. Something happened that gave her the temperament and skillset of a CIA torture technician before freshman year of high school and she turned that onto her best friend for reasons totally unbeknownst to us.

Sophia Hess: I don't know I feel that the one bully who does the most physical harm and acts the most aggressive is the black one. Pretty bad I think. She's also clearly got something going on in her head but tbh that feels like it's going to be more straightforward than whatever is wrong with Emma.

Madison Clements: I feel like she's just here so that Taylor could be bullied without overusing the other two. What's your stake in this? Why do you give a shit? Does it matter? Probably not.

Mr. Gladly: I hated every teacher I ever knew who acted like this and I hate him even more for being utterly useless in protecting a student from blatant harassment. Fuck off.

i like the early worm arcs so much because it's so interesting to see what the undersider group dynamics are like before they entirely reorganize around taylor. and by interesting i mean they make me explode and die (positive).

i think what it boils down to is that the undersiders sans taylor aren't really friends, but they are each others sole replacements for every single support system and human connection they're missing, and that's actually Significantly More Intense. they do all vary in why they're on the team (that is, in why they all have nowhere else they can go), which, alongside their general personalities, impacts the precise mechanisms of how they relate to each other. undersider relationship charts are very complicated diagrams.

brian is on the team because he needs the money to keep his sister from being entirely fucked over by the system (i.e. jailed or kept with abusive parents or in shitty foster care), and i'm sure there's an extent to which it makes his situation as a 17yo with terrible parents far more livable as well. it was pointed out on here earlier this month or the last that we don't really know anything about what his civilian identity is like--we see him interacting with taylor out of mask, but we don't know if he has, like...friends? or family he keeps in contact with outside aisha? or if he does anything with his free time other than trying to prove himself to be a capable guardian for aisha or improve his odds as grue?

and i think the reason we don't have answers to these questions are that brian (civilian) is a mask, too. grue isn't the side identity to an otherwise rich and detailed life--the brian we see speaking to the foster worker in the apartment is playing a barren role. he is 17 and concerned about getting new placemats for his apartment and sorting out school districts for the child he wants to adopt. that's not his normal, unfiltered self, that's a role he's completely stepped into because he'll see himself as a failure on multiple levels if he doesn't fill it. there's no way he has casual friendships or anything along those lines as civilian brian, because civilian brian is plastic. civilian brian can't be a real person, because people have broad ranges of emotions and experiences, and civilian brian is just supposed to be the platonic ideal of a stalwart and responsible family man. there's a reason why the foster worker observes that his apartment is devoid of personality. civilian brian laborn's life is a motherfucking ikea stock home.

i think the most genuine brian ever gets is when he's in the liminal space of the loft--not brian (goodboy civilian mode), but not grue, either. it's only when he's removed from both the obligations of the act he has to play as a civilian & the violent professionalism he takes up as grue that he's able to be a Kind Of Normal Boy. it's where he actually has work-friends to banter with, it's where he plays video games, it's where he gets to go on his dorky rants about martial arts. aisha & the other pressing concerns of everyday life aren't there, so he doesn't have to be Responsible about them--but he's technically still at work, which he attends for the purpose of helping aisha, so he can escape from beating on himself over letting his roles drop. he still intermittently engages in the Brian Behavior of being a little control freak, but also, he playfights with alec :)

which is an extremely compelling dynamic to me...he's not even particularly Close with any of the undersiders, but he's known them for like a year and a half, and they're a space where he can be far more genuinely relaxed than he can anywhere else. which is what makes it so incredibly sad to witness when aisha joins the team & now brian's entire life is about trying to fill that ideal of masculinity he's cramming himself into under the misguided hope that it will protect/care for her. he's breaking under the stress of trying to be a good leader, and he can't admit that the stress of the role is entirely self-imposed. he can't set it down because he won't let himself set it down. it leads him to become condescending and unkind to alec--someone he used to play video games and playfight and banter with--in the same way he is to aisha :( brian laborn my sad boy in torture chamber of his own making. i will write about lisa alec and rachel's situations in other posts to keep this one from being too long

IOTA Reviews: Illusion

You know, It's really sad how this is a Lila episode, and she somehow isn't the most annoying character to come out of it.

Let's get into the fifth episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fifth season: Illusion

We start off with a news broadcast where several people are interviewed about the recent developments this season. There's an attempt made to show differing perspectives, but while half are recurring characters who are confident Ladybug and Cat Noir will beat Monarch (Xavier, Mr. Damocles, and Alec), the other half are antagonistic characters who either blame Ladybug for everything going wrong or are too stupid to care about the bigger picture (XY, Chloe, and Bob Roth).

This is one of the overarching problems with the show, its refusal to show any nuance in its arguments. We already know how easy it is for the writers to blame Marinette for things whenever there's a conflict, but whenever there's an argument where both sides make interesting points, the opposing side is almost always represented by an antagonist or jerk who frames their view in either a condescending or idiotic way so it's easy for the viewer to brush them off, and the same can be applied to their side of the argument as well. Hell, it's already happened twice this season with Lila and Chloe (Multiplication, Determination). It just comes across like the show is pretending to act like its conflict is deeper without actually showing any real nuance with it. I get that some arguments aren't morally gray, but if you're trying to discuss Ladybug's past failures, put more effort into showing how the people of Paris would see something like this without knowing the full context.

Also, this is a minor thing, but I actually like how when we see Alec on the talk show, he's wearing a wig like the one he had in “Wishmaker”, and has the same positive outlook on life he had at the end of that episode. For a show that usually plays loosey-goosey with its continuity, it's surprising to see the writers actually acknowledge the character growth of someone as insignificant as Alec.

Congratulations, Miraculous Ladybug. You managed to give a very minor side character a consistent arc. Now if only you could put the same amount of effort into writing your main cast.

We cut to Adrien's room where, shock of all shocks, he isn't exactly a fan of his image being used for a high-tech ring without his consent. He storms off to see his father, but it turns out that Gabriel is experimenting with the idea of not being such a terrible father for once. He's making breakfast, saying that Adrien can call him “Dad” now, and even admits that he's been very neglectful towards his son ever since Emilie “disappeared”. Yeah, he's cooking breakfast in his white suit and haircut that makes him look like a grandpa for some reason, but hey, at least the kitchen isn't on fire.

Of course, Gabriel still isn't really good at comforting his son, as seen with his response to Adrien's concerns about Alliance.

Adrien: Speaking of which, Dad, I'm not really comfortable with having my face on all these rings. That's actually why I didn't want to be a model anymore, to avoid that. Do you understand?

Gabriel: Of course, I understand, my son. But that's the point; it's just an image, it's not you! And since this image frees you from your obligations, we, the Agrestes, are able to spend more time together. But if you'd rather everything went back to the way it was before, just say the word.

Adrien: You're probably right.

Gabriel: You'll see, my son. Alliance will bring us closer.

“I know you're concerned about me using your image for something that I could have hired literally anyone else for, but if you would rather go back to being a model on a strict schedule, just say the word.”

Father of the year, ladies and gentlemen.

We get a decent interaction between Marinette and Alya where they discuss ways that Monarch could be giving Miraculous to his Akumas, unaware of what the Alliance rings do. Alya comes up with an interesting hypothesis that Monarch is using the Dog Miraculous to swipe them back, and honestly, that sounds like a much better plan than “develop a cutting-edge AI ring and hope whoever I akumatize had enough money to buy one”. I like this bit, as it shows the two thinking of ways to stop Monarch beyond beating whatever Akuma he sends out next. It honestly could have been a really interesting story arc to see Marinette, Cat Noir, and Alya learn more about how Monarch is using the new Miraculous he got instead of having us know what he's doing already.

After class ends, Nino talks to Adrien about an underground resistance he's forming with his friends, deciding to give each member a condiment-themed title.

Alya: What's up with the sauces?

Nino: What's up is Ladybug and Cat Noir don't have us to help them anymore.

Alya: (nervously) Um... uh... what do you mean, “us”?

Nino: Well, us, you Rena Rouge, me Carapace! (Alya kicks Nino's leg underneath the table) Ouch! What's the big deal? We can tell Marinette and Adrien we used to be superheroes. It's not like we have any Miraculous that Monarch could steal from us. The only ones who need to protect their secret identities are Ladybug and Cat Noir, not us. And anyway, I already told Adrien about Carapace.

Adrien: (chuckles nervously)

Marinette: Adrien knew?! Alya, did you know that he knew?!

Alya: What, no, I swear I didn't know at all! (kicks Nino's leg again)

Nino: Ow! Come on! He's my best bud, I can tell him stuff! You and Marinette tell each other stuff, don't you?

Alya and Marinette: No we don't!

Yeah, remember how shocking it was for Nino to reveal that he and Alya were Rena Rouge and Carapace to Adrien in “Rocketear”, and how we thought this reveal would play into something big like the Season 4 finale, possibly splintering the trust several characters had with each other? This is what it culminates in. Wasn't waiting over a year since that plotpoint was established totally worth it for that gag that once again ignores the secret identity rule?

Also, just because you don't have a Miraculous, it doesn't mean Monarch can't target you like he did last season (Optigami, Sentibubbler), you dumbass.

For the first time in God knows how long, Lila actually becomes relevant when she asks to sit with the four, only to be rebuffed by Marinette and Nino. Using some more condiments and food as props, Nino explains his plan.

Nino: We're gonna film an akumatization.

Alya: And how are you, Comrade Ketchup, gonna be in the know when and where this akumatization takes place?

Nino: Easy, Comrade Beurre Maître d'Hôtel. I'm gonna make it happen.

Yep, this is the plot of the episode, people. Nino's going to try and get someone akumatized. Now I know what you're all obviously thinking: Isn't this cruel?

Adrien: Isn't that cruel?

Alya: Totally! To make someone suffer just to discover Monarch's technique? Super cruel!

Nino: No, it's not! You forget Ladybug always fixes everything in the end with her magic ladybugs! The akumatized victims forget what happened to them.

Oh yeah, this is totally ethical, you guys. Who cares about the emotional trauma an Akuma victim would go through, much less any civilians endangered by their rampage?

To make things even better, guess who Nino wants to get akumatized?

Okay, putting aside what we, the audience, already know about Gabriel that Nino doesn't, why would he think pissing off one of the most influential fashion designers in the city of Paris is a good idea? He says he's targeting him because it's easy to do so during parent-teacher conferences, but why not target someone else who has been akumatized more often than him, like Xavier/Mr. Pigeon? I don't think the idea of a more morally gray plan to stop Monarch is a bad one, it's just that this plan is so stupid, and the writers only go over the ethical implications, and that said plan is so ludicrous, Nino is basically asking for a restraining order.

While Adrien and Marinette agree to Nino's plan, Alya only hesitantly goes along with it, but unbeknownst to any of them, Lila was overhearing their conversation, so she goes to tell Gabriel what they're doing. During the conferences, Marinette barges in and pretends to trip and drop some pizza onto Gabriel's clothes, and I'm going to assume that either the pizza was cold of Gabriel is really good at keeping a cool head because there's no way taking a hot pizza to the chest wouldn't hurt like hell. Adrien and Alya come in with more food, and we get the one funny joke of the episode with Alya half-assing her performance as the half-heartedly throws some cake onto Gabriel's suit. Pretty funny how Nino is conveniently the only one who isn't taking the risk by attacking Gabriel in front of his teacher by filming the whole thing, isn't it?

Gabriel has had enough and does a 180, planning to take Adrien out of school and somehow, Marinette blames herself for going along with the plan... even though she was the only one to not approve of it, while Adrien and Alya did, and even then, the latter two were very hesitant. It turns out this was all part of Gabriel's plan, as we see him transform into Monarch as soon as he gets to his lair and uses Trixx's power to create a Mirage of his civilian form, having a breakdown so dramatic, I'm surprised he didn't end it by saying, “YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, MARINETTE!”.

The illusion of Gabriel turns into the Collector again, and now he supposedly has the Horse Miraculous' Voyage as a power. Adrien and Marinette transform into Cat Noir and Ladybug respectively, and try to fend off the “Akuma”. Back in Monarch's lair, we learn that he somehow has the ability to unify with five different Miraculous at once, choosing to do so with the Bee, Mouse, Horse, and Rooster Miraculous. Why is he able to do this now?

Monarch uses Voyage and heads to the sewers, activating Venom before using Multiplication to create eight smaller clones of himself, finally using Sublimination to give the copies the power of invisibility. Strange, wouldn't wanting to be invisible count as a wish? While looking for “the Collector”, Ladybug uses her Lucky Charm, getting a bag of shredded cheese. The two chase after the illusion, only to fall through a Voyage portal into the sewers, where Cat Noir is almost immediately stunned by one of the clones. Hey, it took five whole episodes this season for him to be incapacitated by an Akuma to pointlessly raise the stakes this time! It's a new record! Ladybug throws the cheese to reveal the clones, who are then chased off by some nearby rats.

Monarch goes back to his normal form, and after a small pep talk, the illusion pretends to reject the Akuma entirely before falling into the water. The real Gabriel detransforms and then pretends to have gotten out. So Gabriel tricked the heroes with his foolproof plan... except for the fact that Ladybug and Cat Noir should have recognized the use of Venom, the hidden clones of the Collector when the video Nino got only said he had the Horse Miraculous' power, the akuma somehow purifying itself when Ladybug still needed to de-evilize it in “Rocketear” and “Penalteam”, the fact that Gabriel should be soaking wet from falling into the water, and the—okay, you all know where this is going.

Meanwhile, Nino sees the footage of the illusion and sees what he believes to be the way Monarch gave the Collector the Horse Miraculous' powers. Nino then apologizes to Gabriel for attacking him, Gabriel forgives him, and Nino invites him into the Resistance, with a bunch of new members. The final scene reveals that in addition to Nino, Alya, Marinette, Adrien, and Gabriel, the Resistance now has Max, Kim, Rose, Juleka, Ivan, Mylene, and to Marinette's horror, Lila. Also, there's a post-credits scene where Gabriel explains what he did to Tomoe when literally everyone watching was able to figure it out.

Okay, so let's summarize. The first mission for Nino's resistance involved assaulting a private civilian, was easily discovered before it could even be implemented, was just as easily foiled by an illusion, now Monarch and one of his allies have infiltrated the alliance as moles, and Nino isn't even aware that his plan was a colossal failure. This resistance isn't exactly going to be like the Rebel Alliance, is it?

Yeah, this episode sucked. It's easily the worst one so far in my opinion. There were a handful of decent moments and ideas here, but my God, the story was just terrible. Morally gray subject or not, it's hard to get behind the heroes when they try to intentionally piss someone off for a plan that the audience knows is going to fail, especially a plan as stupid as Nino's. This episode features Nino at his most obnoxious and unlike Alya, Marinette, and especially Adrien, he doesn't even feel bad for what he did to Gabriel when it ended up being (as far as we know) completely pointless. It feels like the writers wanted to gloss over the ethics of Nino's plan by making Gabriel the victim, because if it was anyone else, it would have made him look like a colossal prick. The fact that he learns nothing and thinks his moronic scheme was a success really doesn't help.

The other characters thankfully weren't as bad. It seemed like the writers were trying to show some self-awareness by having Alya, Marinette, and Adrien object to the plan in one way or another, but it never really went much other than them begrudgingly going along with it, much less calling him out for his actions. At the same time, they all got some decent moments, like Alya and Marinette's discussion about Monarch and Adrien struggling to convey his feelings about the Alliance rings to Gabriel.

It's also kind of weird that it took us about five episode into the season for Lila to finally be relevant again after she did absolutely nothing for the last three episodes of Season 4 and the first four episodes of this season. It was only three and a half years since “Ladybug”, the last major Lila episode premiered, right? But hey, at least the writers didn't overindulge in the dumb Lila lies like her other episodes, and was used more as an informant to kick off Gabriel's counter to Nino's plan.

Putting aside how terrible Nino's plan was, Gabriel's plan still had a lot of problems to it. Like I already mentioned, it's a little strange that Ladybug and Cat Noir never talk about the tiny clones they fought, or the fact that Cat Noir was stung by Venom. I can kind of suspend my disbelief by saying Ladybug was too focused on the battle to think, but why the hell didn't Cat Noir say anything? You would think after working alongside Queen Bee and Vesperia, he would recognize what being stung by Venom must look like. Yeah, Ladybug and Cat Noir didn't know Monarch can now use more powers for some reason, but it still really bothers me, because they should know the Collector can't multiply himself. It's also strange that he made his trick so hard to find when you would think it would be more obvious to see

But overall, this one was just a chore to get through. It feels like the writers saw how much some people didn't like Nino in “Rocketear”, and were like, “You call THAT character assassination?” And speaking of...

THE BIGGEST IDIOT OF THE EPISODE IS... NINO

Was there ever any doubt? The dude talked about his identity in a public place, nonchalantly blew him and his girlfriend's cover when he had no reason to for his Resistance, tried to get his best friend's dad akumatized while not caring about any potential damage, showed no remorse for what he did when his plan blew up in his face, tried to tell Ladybug and Cat Noir about what he learned while they were fighting the Collector, and all that was for a plan that didn't even work because the intel was discovered with ease, to say nothing about how he unintentionally let two enemies into his own Resistance. I've seen a lot of stupid decisions in this show, but never have I seen a single episode where a character makes screw-up after screw-up and doesn't even realize how much of a colossal moron he's being. With the past five episodes I covered and awarded Biggest Idiot Awards to (Ladybug, Alya, Xuppu, Mr. Damocles, and Luka), it was more them not seeing the bigger picture. Here, Nino is honestly trying to help Ladybug and Cat Noir, yet he failed at his job in every way.

The thing about being immortal is that you can complain that it's so sad and angsty to be forever eighteen, and since there's nothing to be done about it your bluff will never be called.

More tellingly yet, none of the Cullens ever actually complain of their youth. Oh, there's Edward and his "I'm a bad bad man and my youthful appearance another LIEEE" schtick, but even he doesn't sit around saying "I wish I looked thirty".

I do, however, think that if the Cullens were offered to change their ages they would feel pressured to do so.

If they are all adult-looking, they can skip high school. They can still attend college to their hearts' content, but it will not raise questions among the humans when they start with college and then go on to find jobs the way it would if eighteen-year-old Rosalie tried to pass herself off as thirty. They would be able to stay in the same places for longer.

And all they have to do is look slightly different. Just as beautiful, and no wrinkles or changed metabolism or any of what humans have to deal with when they transition from teens to adults, just... a little different.

To some, like Jasper, Emmett, Esme, and Alice, this wouldn't be such a concern. Esme is already in her mid-twenties, she has no issue. Jasper struggles to eat people wherever he goes, changing the setting from a school to a workplace wouldn't change that and he would if anything be more at risk since there's no one to stop him if he loses control (unless of course all the Cullens get jobs at the same company, which... they might just). Emmett, same boat as Esme, he's already twenty years older and his huge build likely makes him appear even older. This would make no difference to him.

As for Alice, I imagine if she has any issues with her looks it's going to be how extreme it is. She barely has any hair on her head, she's "thin in the extreme", and she's short enough to be mistaken for a child. Yes, she is rocking the look, but that's not by choice and I imagine she if nothing else regrets the fashion items she'll never be able to wear on account of being so short (no disrespect to Meyer's understanding of fashion, but no, the triangle dress she wore at prom would not have worked on someone with the body Alice is described as having).

Edward, Rosalie, and Carlisle are the ones having the throes of moral agony.

If Carlisle looks ten years older than he does now, staying in a place for longer would become that much easier. On the other hand, if the others were to age themselves up, then there would be no need for him to pretend to be their father, and now he doesn't need to age himself up as much as possible. On the third hand, the younger Carlisle is pretending to be the less experienced he can claim to be, which influences what he actually gets to do.

On the fourth hand, this is his face damnit, as well as his physical maturity. If he changes any of that, he potentially changes himself as a person, and there would be no undoing the change.

Rosalie and Edward share the same problem: they can be free from high school, they can get work doing nearly whatever they want, and all they have to do is age up.

Which would lose them their youthful looks and irreparably change the family dynamic.

Hmm.

I imagine there's a long, long moment as the three of them stare at each other, and they end up in a "we go together or not at all".

They don't go.

Bella, if we're including her, asks if she can be made to look younger. You see, Edward is seventeen, Bella is not, can we do something about this?

The Volturi

None of them have reason to care except Jane and Alec.

And I imagine to them, their ages are something so personal at this point, something so intrinsic to who they are, that aging up would change too much about them and for what? So they can have sexual experiences? So they can have relationships? To what end?

Emily does not get to use her powers on anyone.

Except Bella, who now looks indistinguishable from before but she's younger, damnit.

Gosh , I’ve been meaning to write something like this for a while now -

The thing is … I’ve been getting a little tired of needing to draw something every single day ( I’ve actually been considering to open a sideblog where I write stuff , maybe someday I’ll make it ) , so I decided to try creating something different this time around ! :D 

I might start making fanfics from time to time to avoid getting too overwhelmed by art and stuff 👍

After sitting at the edge of the bed , the bunny girl took a deep breath …

< Are you okay ? > 

Bea’s eyes slowly opened , meeting hers for a brief moment before looking at the ceiling . 

< … I dunno . I’m just … tired , I guess . 

I’m worried about work , about dad getting older each passing day , about never being able to do anything with my life as long as I stay in this … hole of a town . 

I mean - seriously , what even is left of it at this point ? I’ve burned down my dreams to survive , all I got are reminders of everything I could’ve done if things went differently , and that sucks … it really , really sucks . > 

The concern on Sarah’s face became more evident after that confession , and the crocodile girl quickly turned around to face the opposite direction , avoiding to meet her gaze . 

They remained silent for a few minutes , the song on the recorder quietly playing in the background before Bea spoke again , her voice slightly more shaky than it was before …

< I shouldn’t have said any of that … just … forget it , please . 

Been feeling shitty all day , but that’s not a good reason to take it out on you . > 

She sounded so guilty and frail … 

Sarah didn’t hesitate : she moved closer , wrapping her arms around her waist , careful about not holding the crocodile girl too tightly in case she preferred not to be hugged while in such a vulnerable state . 

 < Bea , you have every right to talk to me about these things it you want to . It’s no good to keep it all bottled up inside all the time , I’ll listen for as long as you need me to . 

I just … I wish I could do more than that to help you . You’re the most important person in the world to me , and - > 

She was so focused on what she was saying that she didn’t even notice that Bea had turned around to look at her , and the moment she suddenly leaned forward to kiss her Sarah’s eyes widened with surprise , before she gladly accepted her lips on hers . 

It didn’t last long , but it was enough to make Bea’s fears fade away for a few precious moments , and when she slowly pulled away there was a grateful smile on her face … one that never failed to give the bunny girl butterflies .

< You do more than enough , love … trust me on that . 

I can’t help but wonder how I ended up with someone like you sometimes … I guess what I should say is … I’m glad you’re still here with me , despite everything . > 

Sarah stared at her lovingly , placing a gentle little kiss on the tip of her nose .

8. Do you prefer the beginning, middle, or end of a story?

I really like the thrill of the beginning, it’s very exciting to get started on something especially if it’s coming along nicely. I kind of suffer from the sagging middle of the story so unless the scenes I’m most excited to write are there (usually they’re not, I visualize the beginning and the end more), I’m just powering through haha. Getting to the end is always bittersweet because I’m mourning the WIP already, but I also get a great sense of accomplishment.

14. How do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences?

With subtlety xD I’m not really an outwardly emotional person? I bottle up a lot and to me just the surface of that emotion hints at a deep pool of stuff and it feels overwhelming already as far as I’m concerned. I wouldn’t delve into it on my own except maybe in therapy haha.

Strong emotions feel like a storm or static electricity to me so I usually come to my writing from this angle. I’ll use metaphors to express the intensity rather than putting the actual emotion into words.

I definitely write emotional scenes the way I would experience them and if I can relate/have gone through something similar I’ll rely on that, I know it will ring true. I can get caught up in the scene easily enough though, and I’ve definitely cried while writing the sad stuff.

For darker stuff like anger I found it works wonders if I’m writing while someone is annoying the shit out of me lmao. I exacerbate it if I can, using gruesome imagery, though.

20.Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

Oh yeah. I’m guilty of “found a pretty metaphor for the character’s appearance? let’s overuse it”. Alec’s ocean eyes in Blue for Brooklyn (Malec, Shadowhunters) come to mind… Honestly just metaphors when describing eyes. I don’t mind, it’s fun haha.

As a rule of thumb if I learn a new word/expression and I like it I’ll overuse it. To make sure I remember it forever xD

I’ve been going through a phase of dead mom / single dad parenthood backstory for my main characters recently which is interesting because I was actually raised by a single mom so you’d assume I’d do the opposite lmao

I’ve noticed for Teen Wolf there is a very specific tone to the fics that I can’t quite explain but it happens for every multi-chaptered fic so it’s definitely there. It’s something about the setting, I guess it’s my interpretation of small town, USA. 

Oh and writing a non-sexual BDSM fic is like a prerequisite for every new fandom now haha.

Sorry, I had quite a lot of feelings about deleted scenes right after watching Maurice (1987, dir. James Ivory) and - like it or not - I need to blow off some steam:

First about the shortened version (which is "director's cut" apparently... 😑): I liked the main character but... not too much honestly. To me he seemed less "suffering gay character" and more like a mad man obsessively caring about that one person who cares gradually less and less about him (to the point they're almost not seeing each other no matter living in one building). And then Alec kind of appears out of a blue and now he is the love of your life because what: you slept with him once? Well, good luck to you knowing not what true love means... All in all: wishing Maurice well but not sympathising.

And then thank to cut scenes that I watched - I understood his motives and I loved the story!❤ Maurice is actually very interesting person, a guy struggling with his homosexuality all his life - with Clive being very important in it yet not always his main concern. He's just trying to supress his socially-not-fitting desire while trying to live his best life inside the society. With better or worse results - but that all makes him sooo relatable to literally any human in the world!

And he is not always just an asshole toward his mother or sister: playing Charade together they seem to really have fun - OMG, is it possible that this family members actually like each other!?

Now the part with Dicky... Well, obviously not any key moment in Maurice's life and... quite awkward actually😅 But just so human of him🤭 And again: another example showing it was not always about "platonic" Clive. (Don't think Dicky got any traumatic memories? Might that just teach him not to sleep late... and naked... in unlocked room... Jeez, WTF was that?!🤣)

Watching officially released version I wondered why was Maurice looking so devastated in the train? And why was he suddenly so desparate that he needs to be cured? In the cutted version - it seemed like: "oh, I'm so sad bc that one person is so indifferent to me, I need to finally end up my addiction toward him or I'll never be happy" - not that this kind of motivation doesn't feel reasonable but why so emotional about it right now exactly? But then if you knew about Risley... and then about all the awful way ppl in the train were talking about him... Well, the desperate motivation: "I must cure myself or else I gonna end up like poor Risley!" becomes palpable as hell. It's also not only about Clive right now - it's literally about life and death!

The letter telling hipnotist about Maurice's whole life - that's just SOOO important!!! In cutted version we get to know he was writing it. But for whom? We never get to know. Okey, I'm maybe dumb but I really had no idea, not until the last session, that the hypnotist knows it all! Yet not only he knows - he is that one person in the whole world Maurice could openly confess all of this! Someone who listened to him, gave him his time, attention, care, offering his sympathy, advices and trying to help - all of what his "old family friend" doctor was expected and miserably failed to give (just fucked it up right from the start, that old fart...)

Alec. He's not out of a blue. They were looking at each other for some time already. The key moment was in the deleted scene in the garden: Maurice spots Alec with those girls, eating grapes - that must have been a turning point. That what the latter told him later: "you looked at me angry and gentle, both together". That was the time Alec started to look back at Maurice - not with some kind of weird physical obsession and lust (as I assumed seeing it for the first time in the shorten version) - but with sympathy and care. That's when Alec started to think of him as "someone like me" and wonder: what this guy thinks? What this guy feels? Enjoying to see him unexpectedly, laughing when seeing him happy, suffering when seeing him in pain. Seeking for his attention, trying every occassion to interact, to ask one more question about the hunt, the match, about maybe he'd like to use the boat with him... Already feeling protective when saying angrily "Mr Hall is a gentleman!" to another servant. And all the courage he got to get closer to Maurice coming from the fact he was soon going to leave England, thus having nothing to lose (you may say I should have understand it on my own but I turned up to be really too dumb for that). And the most important thing: Alec told Maurice all of this at that one night stand - because they were talking for hours!!! Now how was I to know all these, and what Alec was feeling, and thinking, and desiring, and hoping - when all of this were deleted!? Leaving only the impression of a boy that was pretty, horny and probably too dumb to speak...🤦

The short scene when going inside the building after cricket match - Maurice being so hot he'd like to have some ice... Obviously aroused as hell after being close to Alec for too long!❤️‍🔥 (Interesting thing as we already know from the official version: Alec felt exactly the same way at the very same moment and wrote it in the letter...)

The last speech to Clive. I won't say that ending with words "not a word beyond" isn't cool enough. But knowing all the original speech when Maurice is staying with the dark woods as his background, while Clive staying in front of his house... As if Maurice was on the side of true nature and Clive on the side of stiff and leaking monument of civilisation. And OMG, the way they speak!!! The: "I'll be your till death if you'd care to keep me once!" and then the: "Who taught you to speak like that? - You if anyone" - so much Pigmalion in this very moment!!!😍

Me after watching a movie lasting 140 minutes: Well, that was nice but, oh my, what a long movie! Over 2 hours?! Good that I wasn't discouraged to watch it by the fact!

Me after finding out the same movie lasting 170 minutes: HOW DARE THEY EVER CUT OUT THESE ESSENTIAL PIECES?!

Alec and Magnus and Izzy are obviously the stars of the show but there is so much more that they could’ve done for Alec and how he is treated

Jace doesn’t protect Alec- that whole “I’ll always protect him but while trying to accomplish an interrogation to Magnus was the dumbest attempt he made. since the first episode, jace has been putting Alec through the ringer and I’ve not once seen jace actually go above and beyond to protect Alec. this parabatai bond means absolutely nothing.

215. but also this episode has so much content in just 45 minutes. Alec makes it clear that Magnus isn’t going away and he wants everyone to know how much he adores magnus. Jace hilariously tried to question Magnus and Alec’s relationship as if that’s any of his business and as if he ever carried about Alec. HE DOES NOT and you can’t prove that jace cares about Alec.

Magnus plans this party for alec and then has to deal with Iris, jace and clary bullshit, the love of his life almost dying, Maryse being a cunt, max thinking the worst of him, the poor man goes through it all. Alec almost takes his life and mags seems to be the only one who cares after it’s all done and finished. I never once see jace actually talk to him about it and clary saying “I don’t blame you” just doesn’t seem to be enough especially after all she has done to him and his family.

we find out that max is now a certified shadowhunter and that low scum Robert is cheating on Maryse and that’s why she’s been such a bloody cunt lately. Maryse is still treating Magnus like shit and doesn’t show any appreciation that Magnus saved Alec or any concern that Alec just tried taking his life. oh and the whole stupid I can destroy the sword jace and I can create runes clary bullshit. and it still amazes me how okay everyone is about how jace hid the fate of the downworld from the downworlders. no wonder they fucking retaliate after. I would be hella mad if my family was murdered because of jaces stupidity and he’s walking around as if he didn’t do anything wrong. but all in all, it’s a very good episode and honestly one of my top ten favs but I think it’s poorly executed.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO INCLUDE TRAUMA WRITE IT WELL (and I’m not saying that the show didn’t do Alec and Magnus justice because they did but there is so much that could have been changed for the better) but still a top notch episode and I would give it a 6 on my bitchfest scale

it DOES make sense that the second gen cape is the one to give the second gen cape exposition dump. he’s not really making fun of second generation capes–it is true that second generation capes have easy trigger events relative to first generation capes, and he’s stating it in a pretty objective way. i don’t see the point of the statement being to make sure people don’t think he is one. they would have no reason to assume that he is, and if he wanted to avoid them thinking it, he simply would just not reveal he knows anything about second gen capes. first gen triggers are about the really big moments, the life-ruining shit that sears itself into your consciousness. second gen triggers are about quieter moments of misery that would be unremarkable if not for how well they summarize or exemplify a creeping, long-running way your life has sucked. so i do actually like the idea that alec does think he got off easy with his trigger–that it wasn’t any of the forced attempts that got him, but one otherwise forgettable little moment that underscored the key aspects of his trauma. his power implies a lot of things but one of the coremost traits is the fact that it allows him to force people to help or protect him, to make them act like they care even if he can’t force them to actually care. and the most detailed memory he recalls in his interlude is crying bc he wanted something + being abused for it. and we know that After his trigger is specifically when he emotionally shut down, and things stopped Getting To Him. put all that together and i could see his trigger event being just some understated moment of abandonment, some little moment where he was a little sad or lonely or hurt, tried one last time to get a bit of concern or comfort from someone, and was shoved aside as he always was. and it was the final little bit of damage that pushed him over the edge and shut him down forever. and the thing is that he’s extremely repressed and understands Jack Shit about himself, so it’s completely plausible that he would have 0 idea why the event–so small compared to everything else he went through–triggered him. i could see him regarding it as something a little awkward and embarrassing, the time he got off easy compared to first gens, sort of stupid of himself that after All That the one thing that finally made him trigger was so dumb and tiny. which completely explains why he would want to avoid fessing up to it despite stating that second gen capes have it easier. admitting something That Fucking Small upset HIM bad enough to trigger? alec “no i promise i’m never upset i don’t even care about anything” “emotional repression” vasil? absolutely the fuck not! also, i can 100% see him thinking like. “all those horrible things i did and experienced didn’t make me trigger…but one random small thing did..so i didn’t really care about all the other stuff that much.” because he’s dysfunctional.

Carlos flinched, as he heard another loud crash from the apartment above him. He just finished cooking his dinner and has sat on the couch to eat it, when the first noise came. He paid it no mind, living surrounded by many people in the building, it’s nothing strange. But when it wasn’t stopping and he realised, that the noises were coming from above him, he began to be concerned.

In the apartment 116, lived the man named Charles Leclerc. Carlos knows him – how couldn’t he, they live in the same place. He meets him every day - in the elevator, stairs or even the caffeé opposite their living place.

Seeing him - his cute smile with dimples on both cheeks, hazel eyes and spiky hair - always puts smile on Carlos‘ face. Charles always has this twinkle in his eyes, whenever they run into each other. They are not big friends, per se, but Carlos enjoys the little moments, when he has a chance to see him or talk to him.

Carlos likes him, but he knows he is not available at the moment.

And that’s why he is currently pacing around his living room, trying to be calm and not overthink what is going on up there. He is playing with his fingers, intertwining and untangling them immediately after.

Carlos can hear Charles talking - or shouting really - the nice voice with French accent now high-pitched and laced with sobs.

That’s it. Without really thinking about it, Carlos grabs the hoodie resting on the arm of the couch and puts it on, to look more decent. Quickly putting his shoes on, he leaves his own apartment.

Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it should be used to justify horrible behaviors from authors and characters.

Malec is a toxic, predatory ship bordering on pedophilia (legally, in many countries any adult who commits sexual offences against minors is labeled a pedophilic sex offender, no matter if the minor is 11 or 17 - in some countries even 18!, so even if Alec could consent and there were no offences, many still consider the relationship pedophilic. Words go beyond the dictionary definition when it comes to legal terminology)

The fact that neither you or the anon are concerned with Alec's age and him being a minor (by your own admission) is frankly worrying.

I’ve also said that I thought Alec should’ve been older and more experienced before their relationship began, not a 17-18-year-old naïve teenager. I know couples who have big age differences, couples that have been together for over 15 years but the difference is that they’ve met and begun dating when both were fully mature adults. In that case it’s really no one’s business.

When I said “At some point it does become more about how people personally feel about these things, which is why we still have this same conversation even years later because the reality is that there isn’t a consensus to be reached here. In matters of disagreeing and agreeing (liking Clace or Malec or anything in the series), there isn’t a way around it” I meant far more trivial things than this. I should’ve expressed it more clearly. I also don’t think opinions can be forced on anyone, and no one here is changing their minds—not me, you, or the anon—so it’s not going anywhere.

The whole premise to Magnus and Alec’s relationship is problematic, and we’ve been over this many times. Clary was almost positive that she was out of her mind. 

After everything she’d seen at the club tonight, she had to be going crazy. 

Of course she was because there was no other explanation for what was going on. Everything that she had seen, everything that was going on, it wasn’t real. 

There was no way any of this was real. 

People didn’t just vanish out of thin air ever, and that thing in the club had tentacles in its face, not to mention the fact that she was ninety-nine percent sure that she had killed a guy. It was hardly what she’d expected from her eighteenth birthday when she woke up this morning.

Still, she knew what she saw.

There was no way to explain it, and she was sure that she was going insane, but at least she knew what she had seen. 

If there was anything she had, it was that, and thankfully, it was more than enough for you to help her. When she told you what had happened, you believed her completely and totally, which did make her feel a little better. 

Though, to be fair, you knew a lot more about this than she did. 

This was in her blood.

Clary was a shadowhunter, she was born for this, and while it didn’t make sense now, you were sure that she would adjust. All she needed was time, and a little guidance, which you and the others would be able to give her. 

Not that you wanted Jace to be involved at all. 

After all, it was his idea to bring her back to the institute, which was a terrible idea from the start. Mundanes couldn’t be here, ever, and there wasn’t supposed to be any exceptions to that, even where Clary was concerned. 

She couldn’t just be here. 

You told Jace that as soon as he got back, holding her tight to his chest all full of demon venom, but were immediately ignored by the male. He had already made up his mind, and when he did that, there was nothing you could do to stop him. 

Logic didn’t have a place in Jace’s mind. 

In general, this wasn’t something that you tended to deal in because mundane business wasn’t for you to worry about but for some reason, he had this idea that he had to save her. 

He wanted to keep her safe. 

You understood that this mattered to him, for whatever reason, but this was a bit much.

Alec made the argument that bringing her here was dangerous for not only her but also everyone else in the building, and this was one of those rare instances where you found yourself inclined to agree with him.

Jace had gone too far and now, he’d managed to rope you all in with him. 

It was insane. 

You had been watching over her and Jocelyn all your life, but now, Jace had just swooped in to save the day. It was something that there was no going back from and you just had to hope that when Clary woke up, she’d be able to handle it. 

“How could you be so reckless?” you huffed, protecting Clary was your job. 

You had been her best friend forever and you were someone she was familiar with. If anyone was going to take care of her in Jocelyn’s absence, it should have been you. 

It was literally all you were here for, but in typically Jace Wayland fashion, he had found a way to take that out from under you as well. 

Now, you were going to have to get past him to do anything, like you always had to, as if the other shadowhunters needed another reason to doubt your abilities.  

“I saved her life, shouldn’t you be thanking me?” he grinned, that telling smirk on his face that remained there indefinitely. Normally, you would have just shrugged him off but today you could have knocked off if you felt so inclined. 

He could be so frustrating sometimes, so sure of himself that no one else mattered. 

It was nearly enough to drive you out of your mind. 

In all the years that you had known Clary, you had kept a close relationship with all of the shadowhunters as well. You were one of them, and though this life was a difficult one, hiding it from Clary and all, it was just what you had to do. 

You had to protect her, more than anything else, and as difficult as it was, that was all that mattered at the end of the day. 

Jocelyn loved you like a child of her own, she trusted you with her secrets and most importantly, she trusted you to protect Clary when she couldn’t. That was the whole reason you were here, the whole reason you had been by her side for so many years. 

At this point, you loved her more than anyone and you certainly didn’t want her getting involved with Jace Wayland.

Not because you were jealous, of course, but because you wanted what was best for her. 

That was all.  

“I’ll thank you when I’m sure she’s safe” you countered, gingerly brushing a lock of her hair from her face, where it had fallen in the entire tussle. She was in a lot of pain, with the venom taking its toll on her, but her body was taking the healing rune well. 

She was going to be fine. 

However, until she was awake and calmed down, you weren’t going to be able to relax. 

For whatever reason, this was the most stressful thing you’d ever gone through. You’d had years to go run through this in your mind, but now that it was happening, you were lost. 

This wasn’t supposed to happen like this. 

Jocelyn had been careful, crazy even, so that Clary wouldn’t find out about who and what she was before you were ready to deal with it, but now, you were on your own. She wasn’t here to help you figure this out. 

For now, Jocelyn was gone and you just had to do your best to explain this whole thing to her. 

“She’s going to be fine, she’s one of us. She’s strong” Jace shrugged, looking down at her from where he was at your side, still doing his best to figure out what it was about her that was so special. 

Clearly, she had made an imprint on the both of you and he wasn’t even sure why yet. To be fair though, he didn’t know her like you did. 

He never could. 

“Yeah, that’s one thing we can agree on” you allowed, gingerly giving him a shrug. You weren’t sure what it was you were going to do when she woke up, or how blending your two worlds into one would work, but before you could worry about it, she shot up in bed. 

The action was quick and startled you slightly but you didn’t pay that any mind. Instead, you sat down beside her and did the only thing you knew to do, the thing you were best at. 

You tried to calm her down. 

Even now, that was all you could think about. 

“Good Morning sleepyhead” you tried, doing your best to stay calm, but it was a sad attempt at best. You were clearly shaken, startled over her abrupt awakening, but thankfully, Clary was still a little out of it.

To her, this whole thing must have felt like a dream, so she only smiled at you at first. What had happened today was the last thing on her mind as she looked at you, at least, for a few seconds. 

However, as soon as she reached up and grazed the portal shard hanging around her neck, she panicked. The object brought back everything she’d gone through in the past few hours and the recollection she had was distressing to her. 

No one in their right mind would handle it well, you knew that without a shadow of a doubt. 

While you weren’t surprised by the world you’d grown up in, you weren’t under any illusions as to how jarring it must have been to her. Waking up in this place was more than enough to freak her out, and Jace certainly wasn’t helping either. 

“What is going on? Where are we? Where is my mother?” she asked, immediately bringing all the current issues to the forefront. 

They were swirling around in her head, looming over her, and not one of them made sense. It was too much and you definitely couldn’t blame her for being overwhelmed. 

“We will explain everything Clary, trust me” you hummed, taking her hand in your own in one final attempt at comforting her. You had no idea how this would go, but if nothing else, at least she was at the institute now. 

As difficult as Jace could be to deal with, you knew that she would be safe as long as he was looking out for her. 

At the very least, you could give him that.

Jace wasn’t exactly thrilled when you asked her for a moment alone with Clary to explain but eventually, he decided that it would just be best to do as you asked. The two of you had an understanding, that it would be much better to just try to find common ground. 

Besides, Jace wasn’t exactly the best one to tell her everything, not when there was so much technical history to bring her up to speed on. 

She needed you. 

“What is going on?” she repeated, not speaking again until you returned to her bedside, having stepped away for a moment to ask Jace for some privacy. She had no idea what was going on yet, and unfortunately, you weren’t sure your explanation would help. 

There was just too much happening in your world to sum up in one conversation. 

Still, you knew that you had to try. 

“I’ll fill you in more as it comes up, but there are some things I need to tell you before then” you started, hoping that the more you filled her in, the easier this would get for her to digest, but that wasn’t going to happen. 

Mundanes couldn’t handle the world outside that they were used to, and while Clary wasn’t necessarily mundane, she had been raised that way. Until you figured out what Jocelyn wanted for her, you had to just fly by the seat of your pants through this whole thing. 

“We’re Shadowhunters, Clar” you hummed, giving her a soft smile as you often did while looking at her. Even now, as disoriented and lost as she was, she was the most beautiful girl you’d ever seen. 

Hopefully as this whole thing came into the light, you would actually see the benefits of bringing her fully into your world. 

At least she would understand you completely now. 

“We have angel blood, and that makes it our responsibility to protect the human world from demons and other downworlders” you tried, finding it much more difficult to sum up everything that being a shadowhunter intold than you would have thought. 

It was really complicated.

Still, Clary didn’t seem completely lost as you assumed she would. She was bewildered of course, but she was silent by the time you’d finished, startling you that much more. For whatever reason, it was more alarming than if she would have freaked out. 

It just made you worry that much more that she was losing it. 

“I know it’s a lot, but I’m going to be here the whole time to help you figure it out. You’re going to be okay” 

The words came out forced but you really meant them. It wasn’t going to be easy, but you knew that no matter what came your way, the two of you would be able to deal with it. 

You always had, and now that the rest of the shadowhunters were involved, it would be even easier. 

You could do this. 

“Please don’t leave, there’s no way I can manage all this without you” she hummed, after a few seconds of silence as she thought over what you were suggesting. She had lost way too much already and if she had to do this without you, she’d be completely lost. 

She couldn’t do this without you. 

“Clar, I’m not going anywhere” you promised, this time fully confident in the words leaving your lips. You loved Clary, and whether or not she knew it, there was nothing you wouldn’t do for her. 

No matter what happened, nothing was going to happen to her.
