Bella Ciao as Gaelainn
Mitski posted an English translation of Bella Ciao and was suggesting for people to translate their own versions of it into different languages, and I was taken with that idea so I translated it into Irish. This was my initial attempt.
Dhúisíos ar maidin, aon lá amháin Ó bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao Dhúisíos ar maidin, aon lá amháin 'S chonac an Gall féin os mo chomhair. A Óglaigh uasail, ó beirse leat mé Ó bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao A óglaigh uasail, ó beirse leat mé Ag bagairt orm athá an bás. Más bás a fhaighim, mar óglach uasal, Ó bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao Más bás a fhaighim, mar óglach uasal, cuir sa talamh mé ar shliabh.
I know the recording sounds wild lol I just plopped my phone down and did a voice memo.

This is gonna be a bit of a long rambling personal post sooooo do what you will with that information
The way that Butchered Tongue makes me literally sob
Every time I learn more about Irish history and I learn why my name is spelled the way it is and why my family had to come here makes me feel sick
My last name is Egan, it should be Mac Aodhagáin but when the English colonized Ireland they changed the spelling of last names to kill their language and it happened for hundreds of years
This specific line of my family lived in Offaly for centuries until they were starved out of their own country by their queen who had stewardship over them.
But Irish is still spoken, I have ways of learning it, and people are taking back their names and the names of places. They failed at destroying that culture and I am so openly and annoyingly proud of my all my weird amount of Irish ancestry
But if it weren't for the colonization and imperialization of Ireland my name would still be Mac Aodhagáin. My language would be Irish and I'd be living on the same land that almost every other person in my line has lived on.
It makes me want to curl up and cry and it makes me so fucking angry and if this is how I feel about something that was so tame compared to what happened in America then I can only barely begin to imagine how Native Americans feel about how their land and their people and their cultures and their languages have been ravaged. And every other group of people who've had their cultural identity and their population obliterated for the sake of fucking profit
It's horrific what human beings do for the sake of control over other human beings. It makes me sick
I grieve the cultures that were stolen from me, both Irish and Scottish, and I’ve spent several years trying to reconnect with them, but I also know that it’ll never be the same as it could’ve been if they hadn’t been butchered by the English monarchy for hundreds of years. And that hurts very deeply
I encourage everyone to learn about their family history, and in turn it’ll help you learn about who you are.
And I also encourage everyone to listen to Unreal Unearth because it’s very good

The fact that 6 Music is playing Sick In The Head by Kneecap with the Irish swears censored, no matter what you think of censorship in song lyrics on radio, is a massive, massive mark of progress for the language! How often are things just explained away as 'oh it's another language that's not English that no one understands', for something to be censored by a public broadcaster, they have to believe that it will offend a sizeable portion of people who understand the language. What massive strides Kneecap have been making! Fine Art debuted at #2 on the Irish charts, #40 on the UK charts, both records. Everyone's so proud of them.

Question for Irish speakers (if anyone is up for transcription):
There's a song from the Dungeons and Dragons soundtrack that I cannot for the life of me find a lyric transcription of, its called I Measc na Laochra and its written by Lorne Balfe and performed by Kneecap and Rósín Seoighe. Does anyone either know of a transcription of the lyrics or is anyone willing to try and transcribe it? I'm learning Irish and translating lyrics as a learning exercise, and I love this song which is why I want to find a transcription so bad

Ceol comhaimseartha as Gaeilge (Contemporary irish language music recommends)
Many foriegners looking more into more music as gaeilge following from Unreal Unearth and have been asked afew times about it. So Im gon give afew recommendations
Seo Linn - Folk/Indie/Soft Rock group formed in Conamara and have a good range of sounds ranging from newer covers of our most popular folk songs (Óró sé do bheatha abhaile , Siúil a Rúin and Mo ghile mear are among the best) and are a good intro point
IMLÉ - More of a collection of artists who bring different sound styles together and topics in their lyrics. Honestly, just take the entireity of the self-titled album as a taster
Róisín Seoighe - A great soloist and someone who transfers aspects of Canadh Sean Nós into a newer format. Alot of her work and songs touch on the state of Gaeilge (Níl mé marbh and Sín do lamh).
Kneecap - One of the more well-known, atleast over here. A rap trio from Belfast/Derry, and alot of their lyrics and flow focuses much more on the specific experience of both millenial life and Gaeilgeoirí and An Ghaeilge in the North, and what its actually like trying to engage with society through our language when half of the the governmental institution has contempt for its existence. CEARTA, one of their singles, has still stayed a sort of aintiún (anthem) for language rights up here in the North. Also, heavy heavy anti-colonialism, mar sin craic Mhaith (see their JOE.ie interview). Otherwise, some of ther best works you might like are Cearta, Bouncers agus Gael-Gigolos
TG Lurgan - A sort of summer school/learning scheme that started out of the Connemara Gaeltacht, meant to help irish learners pick up the more natural flow specifically by learning through music. Nearly all of the music is sung by school kids and leading musicians with the majority being covers of pop songs. So you can find the lyrics online easily, and can be a helpful way for people trying to learn how to deal with the lack of real word-for-word translation ó Ghaeilge go Béarla.
This is just a handful of artists, and the first handful rarely scrape over 2000 streams a month. Modern irish music is still very much a niche in its own way, miserably so even on our island. Theres no shortage of music you can find being made by newer artists though, even if ceol as gaeilge only makes up some of their work
Tá súil agam go bhfaighidh tú roinnt a mbaineann tú taitneamh astu, agus má tá tú ag foghlaim, go gcabhraíonn sé leat

Kneecap (2024)
dir. Rich Peppiatt
The Gaelic group, Kneecap, plays themselves in the biographical film about their origin. The group gains fame as they defiantly use their mother tongue. As their nation fights for the public and professional use of the Irish language, Kneecap debates if there is a correct way to make sure native languages do not go the way of the dodo.

As someone who had an obsession with Enya and other Irish music for years growing up, hearing Hozier put Gaeilge into the ears of another generation and exposing us again to it's beauty makes me incredibly happy ❤️

the carpentry crew got sick of listening to the same pop playlists at work yesterday (Spotify algorithm makes everything so samey even if you try vastly different starting points) so for the last two hours of the workday I went out on a limb and requested opera bangers. it went over terrifically despite initial skepticism. makes sense once I realized that classical music (“classical” in the broadest sense) is what we use culturally to signal elevated moments of high drama or emotion. even sweeping sawdust feels epic when carmina burana is the soundtrack
#i got a good grade in workplace music taste something that is reasonable to want and possible to achieve#I’m so shy about music requests bc my actual listening habits are either a niche we have not explored as a group#ie irish-language folk tunes or kpop (could go over well but likely polarizing and I’m scared)#or things I know other people also like but are not gonna get us through the workday (soft folkpop/folk rock for contemplative lesbians)#many people at work enjoy listening to hozier but in a week is simply not gonna give you the oomph to pick up the 300 pound wall#the coworker who is most irritated by the samey playlists is in fact a surprise opera enjoyer so I also satisfied his tastes! HAH!#i will go mad with power and next thing they know they’ll be trapped in four hours of 15th c Italian madrigals#tree.txt

Hozier Concert at Ruoff Music Center/Noblesville
🎶💖Fan Surprise!💖🎶
I'm super excited to see Hozier on Tuesday, and I came up with a fun way to show our appreciation.
Andrew's said multiple times how he'd love to hear the audience sing De Selby (Part 1) back at him in Irish, so let's make that happen!
here's the handout
I printed as many copies as I could reasonably afford, but it would be amazing if other people printed them too so that we can get more of the audience singing 🥰

I love Celtic Woman’s cover of Bean Phaidin because it sounds so cheerful but then you look up the lyrics and it’s literally “I hate Phaidin’s wife, I hope that bitch breaks both her legs” and that’s such a folk music vibe.

A peek inside my sketchbook in my secondary / artist research for my assemble project. I’m focusing on different elements of the stereotypical Irish view such as the music , the language and some people whose art I enjoy. I’ve also included an insight into some other artists who work in text such as Christopher Wool.
I plan to add more photos and information into my sketchbook very soon.
Primary research imagery and info also to come.

#we have that australian one. and i do love maki english's tiny subtleties a lot. and ritchy is really unique in that hes got that like#trilingual cadence. do you understand what im talking about. when someone doesnt really have an 'accent' per se in any of the languages#they speak BUT they have like. subtleties in their enunciation. a clarity? indications that they are very fluent in multiple languages#if that makes sense. i think its a really lovely tone. ritchy and all the rap focused vocals are low key kind of underappreciated#but yeah we dont have a whole lot of english specific vocals with other accents which id like some more#an irish one.......................please............. maybe im so enamoured with a specific vsynth with an irish accent but please....#and it doesnt need to be sv. although very few synths do english well outside of like sv and diffsinger#actually cevios/voisonas english banks are pretty good. but theres only like two and one upcoming rn#although i say all this. i mostly use make my english synths sing in japanese anyway because i LISTEN to a lot of japanese music orz#BUT YOU KNOW.... I WANNA HEAR IT ALL... I WANNA SEE WHAT PEOPLE DO WITH EM....
