Irish Civil War: Electoral Pacts, Constitutions, and Kidnappings
On April 14, 1922, Rory O’Connor and 200 other anti-treaty men took the Fourt Courts in Central Dublin. They took the courts to protest the Provisional Government’s support of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, the creation of the National Army at Beggar’s Bush, and the decision to place the fate of the treaty in the hands of the Irish people during the General Election. Despite Britain’s startled response…

#OTD in 1937 – The new Constitution of Ireland (Bunreacht na hÉireann) repealed the 1922 Constitution, and came into effect on this date.
The Irish Constitution, accepted by national vote in July became law at midnight. The constitution echoed much of the thinking of Éamon de Valera. Much of the development and drafting of the constitution was done by John J. Hearne, Éamon de Valera’s confidante and advisor. Hearne went on to become first Irish ambassador to the United States in 1950. Article 1 reads: The Irish nation hereby…

“Oath of Allegiance to Crown to Soon Vanish,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 28, 1933. Page 1 & 12. ---- It Will Become Dead Letter in Anglo-Irish Free State Treaty - Senate Blocked de Valera Move But That Body Now Rendered Powerless ---- (By the Canadian Press) DUBLIN, Irish Free State, Feb, 28. - Sixty days from tomorrow the oath of allegiance to the British Crown will vanish from the constitution of the Irish Free State and become a dead letter in the Anglo-Irish treaty.
President Eamonn de Valera will effect its disappearance by a motion in the Dail Eireann invoking Article 38A of the constitution, rendering the Senate powerless to obstruct passage of his Oath Removal Bill any longer. The constitution provides that bills which the Senate refuses to pass in such a manner as to satisfy the Lower House will, at the expiration of fifteen months, become law despite the Senate. In the event the Dail is dissolved in the meantime, the waiting period is shortened to sixty days.
The oath question has dominated every election campaign since the Free State was founded and has caused endless acrimony and bitterness between large sections of the Irish people.
Section That Offends The section of the Treaty to which so many Irishmen have taken offence says:
"The oath to be taken by members of the Parliament of the Irish Free State shall be in the following form: I... do solemnly swear true faith and allegiance to the constitution of the Irish Free State as by law established and that I will be faithful to H. M. George V, his heirs and success by law, in virtue of the common citizenship of Ireland with Great Britain and her adherence to and membership of the group of nations forming the British Commonwealth of Nations."
It was on this section that Mr. de Valera and his followers in 1921 founded their objection to the treaty and refused to recognize it. William T. Cosgrove and his party, however, found no cause for complaint in the section and insured that the oath clause in the constitution which was framed later should be a strong one.
Made Mandatory Article 17 of the constitution made the oath mandatory. The Republicans refused to take it and remained outside the Dail, leaving Mr. Cosgrave and his adherents with a clear field.
For a while the Republicians pursued a policy of abstention, contenting themselves with getting elected to the Dail and boycotting the Assembly. At that time all the Republican forces were concentrated in one organization, styled "Sinn Fein" (literally "ourselves alone"), but they grew tired of abstention and loss of political capital in the few years that followed.
After the 1932 elections when Mr. de Valera found himself heading the Government for the first time he immediately attempted to remove the oath. He was blocked by the Senate, He is now in a position to force removal of the oath but is still faced with a possibility that this move will fail to satisfy left wing extremists including the old Sinn Fein,

Happy International Women’s day!
Reminder that in 2023 the Irish Constitution still states that a woman’s place is in the home.

Since the presidential elections for the US are happening this year, I’d like to give just a little reminder.
Not everyone on here is from the US. It’s so aggravating to be harassed with messages and anons of people demanding to know why you’re not posting about it, or reblogging info, or making it known who you’re voting for… no one… I’m not from and have never been to the US.
And you wouldn’t think this would have to be said, but only people with US citizenship can vote in your elections. So no, people in Ireland, etc. don’t vote for your politicians.
I’m not even joking when I say tourists come here and ask who you’re voting for/ encourage you to vote for ___. I’ve seen Americans write “vote Trump” in the dust in cars. They walk around in their MAGA merch and insist on talking to you about American politics like you are involved. And idk maybe that’s just a symptom of dumbass trumpies, but I’ve had democrats say the same to me.
You also get the asks that acknowledge that it’s not your country’s election, but still think you should be posting to “raise awareness”… girl everyone in the fucking world knows every bit of info about your elections. It is shoved in our face constantly. Because the internet/ media operates as if America is the entire world.
It’s insane. Like people in our own country will know more about American politics than our own! Americans don’t post or even acknowledge other country’s elections, so why are we obligated to do so for yours?

Alright so this week's referendum in Ireland is kind of Devious. We're being told we're voting for feminism when we're actually absolving the state of a duty of care. This is the care referendum, not the family one. My stance is Yes for families, No for care. Right now our constitution states that "The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”
The proposed amendment states "The State recognises that the provision of care, by members of a family to one another by reason of the bonds that exist among them, gives to Society a support without which the common good cannot be achieved, and shall strive to support such provision.” So under the new amendment, the state is under no obligation to ensure a caregiver has the economic freedom and security to choose whether or not to work, and in fact shifts the burden of care entirely onto families. The State is under no obligation to provide "care" to infants, or, as advocacy groups have pointed out, disabled people, instead shifting that burden entirely to families, whom the state is no longer under any obligation to ensure have the economic freedom and security to become fulltime caregivers. Honestly, its kind of Devious pairing this with the amendment extending the definition of families, the care amendment has sort of been buried by the uncontroversial extension of protections to unconventional family units not centered on marriage. Everything is pointing to "vote yes for families" and what little I've seen of the care amendment is couching it as the simple removal of sexist language. On March 8th no less!
So, any Irish people voting on Friday, Vote no on the care amendment!

I've been waiting to vote this fucking thing out of the constitution since I learned of it's existence in history class, it better go ahead. I, for one, would love to debate anyone who thinks this shite belongs in the 21st century

hey if you guys want to see an amazing indie Irish horror movie that explores the theme of love as consumption i would HIGHLY recommend All You Need Is Death. It's coming to theaters in the US and EU soon - if it's showing locally, give it a watch!
It has:
One useless man and the horrible female ancestors that bully him
Drunk women in closets discoursing on the impossibility of saying I love you in Irish
Eldritch folk songs
Horrible ethnography milfs
Library crimes

Episode 62 - Electoral Pacts, Constitutions, and Kidnappings
Michael Collins takes a novel approach to avoiding civil war: election rigging and writing a constitution that will undermine the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The British Government prefers direct action against the anti-treaty IRA members who took the Four Courts and may have assassinated Field Marshall Wilson. Which option do you think seems more likely to avoid civil war? Support this podcast by…
