I think we need to put the word "intuitive" up on the shelf for companies until they stop defining it as "minimalism" and "gestures that look like you're using a holographic scifi screen"

Ah. Thank you for making that as clear and obvious as possible, tumblr. I especially like the white font choice given how highly it contrasts with the off cream tone of the background.

honestly Adaine is so good at clarifying/directing Ayda socially that it begins to circle back to a dynamic of like, Ayda saying "i don't know or understand these rules" and Adaine responding "have no fear, I've been carefully studying and manually interfacing with these for years, I will explain:" in a way that to me is so autism4autism

My ADD Medication Journey - Dec 30, 2023
Forgot to post this yesterday because I was wrapped up in a personal project.
12/30/2023 – Saturday
Had another somewhat unsatisfying night's sleep
Combination of noise from outside and mind kind of refusing to stop processing
Nothing intrusive or unpleasant, things like "I should do this and this and this tomorrow"
Decided to lounge in bed later than usual to offset
Morning does taken at 10 am
Lazy day, relaxed to recoup from a very busy week
Didn't notice any serious uptick in tremors
Appetite was suppressed but managed to remember to eat around 2pm or so
Purchased some computer equipment to finally tackle a project I've been waiting on
Spent the evening working on this project—learning curve
Ate dinner around 6:30 – 7 pm
Stayed up later than I should have trying to get past the learning curve on the project

Every time it's a test.
Can you remember which icon records voice audio and which one is speech-to-text?? Because the interface gives you no clues.

With regard to many of the game mechanics, Skyward Sword feels like a proto-Breath of the Wild. The expansiveness of the zones also feel more open-world; especially the desert regions, where you can see across a wide area, and though you’re taken on a meandering course through it all, the increased agency—and sense of agency—feels good. It’s a nice hybrid of puzzle-solving on wider rails—with a little trail-and-error to discover where the bounds of the rails are—which later evolved in BotW into a full-on sandbox, where a player can approach zones in completely different ways.
The puzzle affordance in each of the zones took a bit of getting used to, and that may because of different designers responsible for different areas. The forest—a winding labyrinth of tree roots and little hills—was actually slightly overwhelming for me as an opening area for a new player. What flora are interact-able, vs just environmental decoration? How should I approach new monsters with shields that are not that durable? How much should I know at this point?
Where I stumbled were places where I didn’t realize something was meant to be interact-able; I couldn’t see it because I didn’t know to look for it, because it’s part of the environment and doesn’t stick out as a gameplay interface. Once I learned to read the language of art assets and build the vocabulary of functional associations with them, it made future areas easier to parse.
I just returned to the forest and it was an amazing feeling running through the area and mostly knowing where I was, what to do, with a sense of what I couldn’t do yet, and a variation on new enemies to face. Normally, reuse of areas can be a little irritating, but it was nice seeing the persistence of my prior impact still in place (puzzles solved, areas opened, etc.), as well as scaffolding of new discoveries in the same area (more hints from Sheikah Stones that explain weird things I’d seen before, etc.). Unlocking places I could see before but couldn’t reach earlier made the smaller world feel a little richer and less repetitive, and the reprise of the dungeon was nice simply because it was so quick.
Adjusting to this game feels a bit like learning the voice of an author who is new to me: calibrating to their phrasing, pacing, use of punctuation, etc., and recognizing the meta structure behind how the story is being told. At first, it feels a little weird having to work to parse what’s being said, but eventually I learn the pattern and can comfortably settle into how the story unfolds. Once that affordance layer is understood—and I can start to accurately predict or know how to engage with it—then I’ve already settled into the story itself.
