Wait wait wait. Was the Metal Masked Assassin supposed to be Nathan's foil?

They're both big guys with long hair (in opposite colors even). They both speak with a natural death growl. Both leaders of some sort.

The MMA is like what Nathan wants to be early on in the series. He's brutal, he never shows any emotions except rage, he doesn't care about a single person on Earth now that his brother's dead. Metal is seemingly fused to his face, he literally can't stop being "metal." And that's the way Nathan tries to describe himself and his band, especially in interviews. They have rules about not caring about people. They can't like things that aren't "brutal" enough. What he wants, when he's young and immature, is to be just like this man.

But Nathan's not like the Assassin, and that's what makes him a good guy.

Nathan cares about people. He loves his bandmates so much, he started thinking of them as his family. He tries to have a good relationship with his parents, even if he thinks they're embarrassing. He realized there can be value in being soft, and in reaching out to people.

Consider the only dialogue they exchange in the entire series:

MMA: You took my brother from me. NATHAN: But we'd rather burn in Hell than let you take ours.

The MMA didn't know what happened to his brother until General Crozier told him. It was a surprise, because the two didn't really seem to be that close, and he didn't know what his brother had been doing. But Nathan's always around Toki (and the rest of Dethklok). When his brother was taken, Nathan and the others found Toki using Magnus' clues, which they could only do because they pay attention to each other. They still remembered the place where Toki had his first show and his audition many years later.

And after that one exchange? THE MMA DIES. He's gone from the rest of the series, because he's already served his narrative purpose. The MMA's line shows that he's going to remain stagnant forever, single-mindedly pursuing brutality and violence. Nathan's line shows how far he's come, that he can confidently say how much he cares about someone. Nathan overcame his inner conflict so hard that his foil STOPPED EXISTING.

I'm sure that this has been stated many times before, but the way Assassination Classroom begins and ends with Koro Sensei taking attendance is just writing genius.

The first roll call is loud, violent, and chaotic; it's literally all the kids shooting machine guns at Koro Sensei while he effortlessly dodges them and cheekily calls out their names, telling them to speak louder so that he can hear them over all the gunfire. It's impersonal—we don't focus on any of the kids except Nagisa, everyone else is just a figure with a gun.

The last roll call is the exact opposite: quiet, intimate, and personal. Once again, all the kids surround Koro Sensei, but now they're on top of him, pinning down his tentacles, and he is completely immobile on the ground. Now, against the backdrop of this quiet night, we focus on every student of Class 3-E, each of them getting their moment with Koro Sensei as he gently calls out their names and waits for them to say "here".

A beautiful example of connecting the beginning with the end in a way that effectively conveys the progression of everyone involved. Bravo Matsui sensei, bravo.

thinking about how nu world dante seems.... chiller than original dante. like yes he's still annoyed by blade and rei but he's not going Fur Standing on Ends Defensive prickle mode. he's more like... hey guys. can you maybe, stop. now. that would be great. and i'm gonna pretend it's partially because dante's parents are still alive in this timeline and he's had more supportive family around him for a longer time and he doesn't have to carry the weight of an entire crumbling kingdom on his budding dorito shoulders and he feels more secure and hfgrfsekejdfkrse

wait hang on what was lestat's goal in going to the "trial"? he has to have known that its purpose was to kill them. was it just so he could be there to hurt louis a bunch before saving him? there certainly are other ways to do that, ways that don't sacrifice claudia.

especially if he was then just gonna let armand take credit for the rescue.

i know he had issues with claudia, even before she instigated and did most of the work for their attempted murder, but his face as she burned... i don't know if i buy that he actually wanted her to die.

there's gotta be something i'm missing/not remembering. idk maybe he is actually just that terrible, which i'm not discounting. just unsure if there's another piece that's slipping my mind.

Meta + Varia ((OOC: kinda like a I'm curious for Sarina's general opinions on the Varia members))

SARINA HEADCANONS: VARIA

“I work with these shitheads?  Don’t let me down.”

She did not have a good impression of any of them.  Some nicknames she picked for them stayed or worsened.  They were not said to anyone’s face except for Fran’s.

It is hard to say what she likes and dislikes about them.  She definitely has a hate-love with most of the assassins listed here.  For a couple of them it is hate at first sight.

Fran 

First Impression: “Fruit Fairy”  “Probable Yes Man”

Latest Impression: “Would love to kill the Fruit Fairy.”

Desire to Fight: 0% “Not interested if you won’t take this fight seriously.”

She does not like the kid overly much.  Probably ignores him for the most part, unless he has useful things to say to her.   She does not like what nickname he gave her, and calls him “Fruit Fairy” or “Fairy Brat”.  However, he is much better than dealing with Belphegor.  Not that she would let him know that.

She will take Mukuro’s and Mammon’s word that the boy is good enough to be Varia.  Though, if she has to deal with Fran, it will be on Mukuro’s, Mammon’s, Xanxus’ and Belphegor’s heads.  Lussuria is probably the only one that can calm her down from attempting to kill the boy.

Mammon/Viper 

First Impression: “Money-Grubbing Infant”  “Yes Man”

Latest Impression: “Snot-Scrying Infant” “I worked too much to get my deduction.  Not risking it.”

Desire to Fight: 70% “It would be interesting to see how she does against an Arcobaleno.”

Does not know why the Arcobaleno is working with the Varia.  Does not try to ask because Mammon would charge her thousands to hear what comes out of the Mist infant’s mouth.  She does warn Lussuria not to hold the illusionist like a baby.  She will never admit it to the illusionist, but she is thankful for Mammon’s abilities, including the disgusting snot scrying one.  It has saved her many times, though she really would like a greater deduction on the price…

She misses the illusionist’s presence at the headquarters, and would prefer them to return.  However, the illusionist has Arcobaleno duties to attend to.

Levi

First Impression: “Creepy #1 Xanxus Fanboy”  “Yes Man to the Extreme”

Latest Impression: “Creep.”

Desire to Fight: 20% “Only to piss Belphegor off with a higher number.”

He is a loyal man, don’t get it wrong, but Sarina knows that with every leader there’s strengths and weaknesses.  Xanxus is no different.  The man is still steadfast and follows every order to a tea.  The only reason Sarina follows her orders is that she gets to leave the headquarters for an uncharted amount of time.  If she hears more “Xanxus…” she will probably jump off the nearby bridge.

Lussuria

First Impression:  “Yes Man”

Latest Impression: “He’s cool but I would not want to be one of his corpse dolls.”

Desire to Fight: 50% “It’s a coin flip, but I do not want to argue with him like I did before.”

Sarina thinks Lussuria is kind and tries to nurture the troops in their own way.  Despite the politeness and warmth, she is not sure Lussuria trusts her.  Lussuria is nevertheless another assassin, and there is cruelty there.  However, it hurt when she was pushed out of the Varia.  She is thankful Lussuria probably warmed up to her again, knowing she was in a difficult position.  She leaves most of the dealings with the other officers to them.  That way she could easily put distance between herself and them.

She knows they want to get to know her, but can she trust this hellishly dysfunctional family?  She is not sure and Lussuria probably understands that.

Belphegor

First Impression: “Prince Annoyance” “Yes Brat”

Latest Impression: “I’m going to kill him one day.  And they won’t find the body.”

Desire to Fight: 15% “It’s a generous number, but I’m afraid you’ll bore me, Your Highness.”

This assassin has been a little shit to her since day 1.  She would love to kill him when he least suspects it.  Oh, and his mink too.  That animal gets into everything, including her lingerie.

She absolutely hates aristocrats and their pompous attitudes.  Belphegor probably came from a very sadistic line of Royalty.  Does she believe he killed his older brother?  She is not sure and it is hard to say.  However, she does not want to be around the younger assassin.  Especially once he hears her epithet as the ‘Princess of Assassins’.

Squalo/Squaletta

First Impression: “Loud Supervisor” Who she should try killing. “Yes Man”

Latest Impression: “Loud Supervisor” Keeps Bel from throwing knives at her door.

Desire to Fight: 90% “Very sure Superbi will take it seriously.”

She respects Squalo and the person.  Probably a lot more than Xanxus.  She low-key fears Xanxus and Squalo, and fights them both when she does not agree on things.  Specifically, what they should feel about the Vongola Tenth generation, despite Sarina agreeing with the rest of the Varia that they are weak.

Squalo also has a lot to teach when it comes to the sword (and Xanxus), and that is one of the motivations she had with fighting against him.  It probably comes from her own right hand being of rain and also a swordsman.  She was astounded Squalo still held respect for Xanxus even after getting laughed at for being fed to the sharks.  While she respects the absolute loyalty of the person towards Xanxus, she can’t help but condemn the person for being a ‘yes man’ of Xanxus.

“I protect what I hold dearly from afar.” Was one of her last words to Squalo before she made it for the Japanese branch headquarters.  For Squalo, it is probably words that haunts him, knowing Sarina eventually died in a battle against the Funeral Wreaths.  As well as informing Alesso, her father of her death, and only getting a laugh from the man.  “She was weak.  I’m glad she’s gone.”

Xanxus

First Impression: “Angry Manbaby”

Latest Impression: “I like his future self much better.”

Desire to Fight: 99% “Will the Cloudy skies defeat the Stormy Skies?  Or simply add to them?”

She only respects his abilities, not the man himself.  However, when she does go to the future as ten-years-earlier self, she learns to respect what he’ll become or has the potential of becoming.  She will speak up against him if she disagrees with certain beliefs.  She is not afraid of defending herself when she should be.  If there comes a day when she is allowed to fight in tandem with him, she will, however for now she expects a great deal from him as well.  She understands he won’t always meet expectations and he doesn’t care about anyone’s expectations.

She holds him accountable for the previous actions, but she knows she has to forgive him not condone those actions.  She has a long way to go before she understands the man that he is becoming or has become.

It was strange to get an amicable grunt from Xanxus in the future.  She had lost her Cloud officer title and been banished to the Japanese branch of the Varia.  Her actions during the future arc are noted by the Varia after she came back.  However, she had a chance now to take the title back.
