I'm sure that this has been stated many times before, but the way Assassination Classroom begins and ends with Koro Sensei taking attendance is just writing genius.

The first roll call is loud, violent, and chaotic; it's literally all the kids shooting machine guns at Koro Sensei while he effortlessly dodges them and cheekily calls out their names, telling them to speak louder so that he can hear them over all the gunfire. It's impersonal—we don't focus on any of the kids except Nagisa, everyone else is just a figure with a gun.

The last roll call is the exact opposite: quiet, intimate, and personal. Once again, all the kids surround Koro Sensei, but now they're on top of him, pinning down his tentacles, and he is completely immobile on the ground. Now, against the backdrop of this quiet night, we focus on every student of Class 3-E, each of them getting their moment with Koro Sensei as he gently calls out their names and waits for them to say "here".

A beautiful example of connecting the beginning with the end in a way that effectively conveys the progression of everyone involved. Bravo Matsui sensei, bravo.

A little interaction that happened on twitter yesterday:

A large anime account (toarutoa) posted the following image set of "Anime adaptations that angered their original creators", including a screenshot of Hellsing (OVA) with the subtitle "<Author: I sold the DVDs I was gifted on Mandarake>[popular secondhand shop]".

Hirano saw the tweet and made the passive-aggressive reply, "I wonder what the value of an anime twitter account that can't even distinguish between an OVA and TV series is."

(Apparently the comment about Mandarake was something Hirano actually said about the TV series back in the day, which he was known for being extremely critical of. Some of his other comments included "It's a waste of Nachi Nozawa" [Anderson's VA in the TV version and Hirano's dream casting for the character] and "There's no point in staying up late on Wednesdays.")

The OP ended up deleting their post a few hours later, but Hirano tweeted a follow-up:

"I really like the Hellsing OVA. I can't believe they adapted something so, y'know, into an anime so well. The entire staff has my utmost thanks. I don't have a single negative thing to say about it."

hello! your good ole ask-assclass blog moderator is, in fact, alive. I'm just not that into assclass anymore. BUT I still love matsui yuusei! I've read all his works — heck, I've even met the man and handed him fan art! — and I'm really into his newest series, the elusive samurai. so rest assured, it's not that I love assclass any less, it's just that a lot more has caught my attention since then.

while I'm at it, here's my life update since 2020: - I have since graduated twice, with an undergrad and a postgrad degree in my engineering field of choice - I now work as a cog in the corporate machine and am constantly traveling for work. I'm hoping to find more time to draw this upcoming year.

I'm not 100% decided on the future of this blog. I won't delete it, since there are many memories here, but I also want to align with what fans of assclass (if the fandom even exists, still) would be interested in. open to suggestions!

That's my ultimate problematic fav, the demon Nougami Neuro, from the manga Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro/Neuro: Supernatural Detective by Yuusei Matsui (the same author as Assassin Classroom)

My profile pic was cut out from an old fanart I did when I was still active in this fandom on Deviantart back in early 2010s.

Rating: 11/10. a beautiful classic car illustrated beautifully. clean and sleek and extremely identifiable. in fact, I think that Yuusei Matsui should draw more cars.
