New intergender flag design
Tumblr media
Intergender: an intersex person whose gender feels connected, linked, influenced, or a result of being intersex. This term is used as a descriptor of one's gender (e.g. an intergender trans woman) similar to how neurogender is a descriptor. Intergender is also used as a gender in of itself (e.g. hir gender is intergender). This is a well-established term in the intersex community.
I'm personally a minimalist when it comes to queer flag design. This design takes the Carpenter intersex flag and inverts the colours, to reflect how intergender is a complimentary term to intersex.
I'm also influenced by interpunked's intergender flag design, which I think had some good ideas but is too busy for my personal taste.
The colour fits nicely with how the ipsogender flag already does this (it replaces the ring with the Earth symbol). It also allows us to take flags with a design of intersex flag + <icon of other thing> and turn them into intergender flag + <icon of other thing>, like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[intersex + autistic, intersex + disabled, intersex + plural, followed by intergender + autistic, intergender + disabeld, intergender + plural]
I've put up an SVG version of this new intergender flag design on Wikimedia Commons here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Intergender_Flag.svg - it's public domain and free to use! <3

Interwoman & Interman flag redesigns!
We were NOT happy with the flags we made in 2021, so we remade them. Not much changed, it still has the same meanings, its just more aesthetically pleasing now.
(Please read and reblog our intersex guide! Its important to learn about intersex people.)
Interwoman/Intergirl: a person that is intersex and also a woman. They can have any sex traits. They might identify as a cis-woman, a trans-woman, or both.
Tumblr media
Interman/Interboy: a person that is intersex and also a man. They can have any sex traits. They might identify as a cis-man, a trans-man, or both.

Note
would you mind explaining a bit about what cistrans *is*?? or if you don't feel like it, pointing me in the right direction?? im just curious about it and don't know where to look for information that isn't from radqueers and people who may use it incorrectly.
sure!
for everyone it's different. I'm not going to say it's exclusively an intersex label but functionally it's used that way.
it describes a complex relationship with the labels "cis" and "trans" where someone finds themself being both or somewhere in-between.
there are so many different examples of how intersex experience can fit into this because intersex experiences and identities are so diverse.
one of the big ones is discovering you were assigned the wrong sex at birth. just a random example, a trans man discovering he actually has CAIS and XY chromosomes. while he was raised with the expectation of being a woman his actual sex is complicated and he might feel his sex is closer to male than female. there's a mismatch in life experience of gender and actual sex. his gender is undeniably trans but his sex? his sex is closer to cis.
intergender as an identity is another one that can sometimes lead to people identifying as CisTrans. when you're intersex you're almost always raised with the expectation of being either a man or a woman, it is exceptionally rare to be an outlier to that. even the intersex people who are not raised strictly within the binary gender system aren't raised with the label of intergender. to become intergender you must change the label of your gender, but simultaneously intergender is a gender that always matches your sex. (this is personally a large part of the reason I identify as CisTrans.)
having a combination of identities can also make this label apply. multigender people are people who this label can absolutely apply to when one of their genders is one that they were raised with the expectation of being. trans for one or more genders, cis for one or more (yes, more. intersex people are often reassigned later in life) genders as well
speaking of reassigned genders, when your gender is reassigned later in life the labels cis and trans can get complicated. if you identify with a binary gender then no matter what you identify as you are identifying with a gender assigned to you at some point.
I'm sure there are other examples of places this label can apply. this isn't an exhaustive list at all. it's just what I'm thinking of off the top of my head.
also worth noting because someone will misread this: no, just because someone fits one of the above does not mean they have to identify as CisTrans. no one is forcing the label on anyone. I am hitting you on the head with a newspaper if you comment complaining about something that is not happening.
also CisTrans people are welcome to add on with their experiences and reasonings behind using the label :]

Term proposal: gender sodality
As is, we have terms like:
Intergender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced by being intersex
Neurogender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced by being neurodivergent
Somatogender: when your gender is connected, linked or influenced by having a somatic disability
Indigender: when your gender is connected, linked, or influenced to being part of an Indigenous culture
These aren't gender modalities. While sometimes they get used as gender identities, they often aren't: they're descriptors of the influence(s) on one's gender identity.
I'd like to propose that we call them gender sodalities. 🎉
The word "sodality" is used in theology and anthropology as a contrast to "modality". It comes from Latin sodalis ("companion") and is used to refer to non-kin groups organized a shared purpose or affiliation. I like it here because these gender terms indicate that one's gender is in conjunction with being part of a community.
Right now these gender terms tend to get grouped under exclusive genders, and they are exclusive, but I want a way to talk about the the influence descriptors that doesn't apply to the exclusive gender identities and/or exclusive gender modalities.
I considered calling them "gender influences" but that word pair gets used a lot to refer to things like how one's gender influences what occupation you pursue and stuff. Also: "gender identity", "gender modality", and "gender quality" all end in -ity and so I wanted to keep the trend going. @GoingRampant helped brainstorm ideas for terms with me and helped pick "sodality" out of the options.
Gender sodalities can be combined: for example, one who feels like their gender is a function of being both intersex and autistic could then say their gender sodality is interautigender.
I'm also going to coin two non-exclusive gender sodality terms:
1. Coenogender for when one has a sense of gender that feels connected, linked, or influenced by being part of the common hegemonic zeitgeist of Global North / Western society. Coeno- is used in scientific terminology to denote something is common or general. Does *not* mean the individual approves of Global North binarism! One can be influenced by something and also feel like it is a negative/restrictive influence! (Coeno- is usually pronounced /si:no/ in English, like see-no. It comes from Greek, and in Greek it's pronounced closer to kee-no. I personally consider both correct.)
2. Eigengender for when one has a sense of gender that feels inherent to one's self and unrelated to their intersex status, disability status, culture, etc. So one is not intergender, not neurogender, not somatogender, not indigender, nor coenogender. Eigen- in reference to the prefix used math: an eigenvector is one which is unchanged under transformation. It comes from German, meaning "one's own", characteristic of a given individual. Pronounced /ˈaɪ̯ɡən/ (like eye-gun - sound recording here)
Note: I am intergender, and do not identify as eigengender, though I do feel at least partly coenogender. Eigengender is coined in response to an anonymous ask for a term more general than extergender (not-intergender). Coenogender is coined as an option for those who feel none of the above and/or the "default" sodality.
Note for Americans: the spelling of coeno- with the o is intentional. This is because a different scientific prefix, caeno- (new/recent) gets Americanized as ceno- (e.g. Cenozoic). The two prefixes have different etymologies. It's standard to spell coeno- with the o to avoid confusion, including in the US.

Reason why I, an intersex trans man, got called a TERF #958465:
I don't support people who say that they're FTF or MTM "trans" or dfab trans women/DMAB trans men.
I don't really care if you're intersex or not, you can't transition to the gender you were raised as. That's just not a thing. It devalues actual trans experiences imo.
I can speak personally about the experience of being raised as a girl and actually being transmasculine and having that affect my experiences. A person who was raised has a girl and identifies as a woman does not have those experiences. A person who is raised as a boy and identifies as a man does not have those experiences.
I can fully respect people who identify as cisgender intersex, or consider intersex to be their gender, or identify as intergender, or even identify as intersex to female or intersex to male because those make sense. If your experience being intersex affected how you were raised and you identify as a different gender than your parents raised you to be, I totally understand that. But "I'm intersex and identify as the gender I was assigned/raised as" doesn't equal being trans.
But no amount of logic in my brain can ever understand how someone can transition to the same gender that they were raised as. It just seems like cis with extra steps to me, it seems like intersex erasure, and it seems transphobic.
I know that it's controversial to critique certain identities, but as someone who is intersex and trans, I feel like my opinion is valid. I don't see "MTM", "FTF", "dfab trans women" and "dmab trans men" as good faith identities.
People are still welcome to use those terms for themselves, but I don't feel comfortable interacting with them.
Usually when I have in the past, they've treated me weird (I've had people from that community insist that I can't be FTM because I'm intersex, I've experienced a lot of casual transphobia from that community, and I've had a lot of them basically pull the whole "transandrophobia is fake because trans men have male privilege blah blah blah") and I just don't want to deal with that.
So yeah, IDC if people criticize this tbh. Unless you're also intersex and trans, it's not really something you can invalidate because I'm talking about my own community.
I'm going to block anyone who leaves comments bothering to say that they don't agree with me because I really don't give a shit if you agree with me. You aren't changing my mind and talking over me is transphobic and intersexist.

Intertciaspec and Intertcingender
( ID 1: A flag with five horizontal stripes, in the following colors: dark purple, pink, yellow, turquoise and dark blue. In the center, there's a white circle outline with a yellow border around it. End ID. )
( ID 2: A flag with seven horizontal stripes, the middle stripe being thicker, in the following colors: white, pink, magenta, yellow, navy blue, teal and white. In the center, there's a dark purple circle outline with a yellow border around it. End ID. )
Terms and flags for those who are Intersex and Tciaspec / Tcingender, and / or are Tciaspec / Tcingender in an Intergender way / in a way which is caused by or inherently tied to being Intersex.
( If you don't want to use the combination terms you can just call them Intersex Tciaspec / Intersex Tcingender. )
Combining the Intersex flag by Morgan Carpenter with the Tciaspec and Tcingender flags by @ryanyflags. I thought the layout of those flags and the colors were incredibly pretty, so I tried to maintain that while still making them distinctly a combination / Intersex-focused.
Obviously these are intersex-exclusive but perisex folk are free to reblog or archive !! Free for anyone to use anywhere.
