I've been relistening to the homestuck soundtrack album by album while working lately and man. it's reminding me how much I genuinely loved about homestuck, and how that made the aspects of it that sucked so much more frustrating
#I have such a love/hate relationship with this stupid comic#we're vascillati- [gets shot]#no but for real there is so much that's good#really interesting and entertaining characters#and a LOT of them. there is truly a character for everyone#genuinely funny dialogue#interesting worldbuilding#absolutely INSANE utilization of the artistic medium#like. sometimes I think about the panel expanding to fill the whole page in cascade and I go a little crazy#but then for every strength it has. it shoots itself in the foot.#it has interesting compelling characters but because there are so many of them only a few get actual narrative attention and development#and many others just get completely fucked over by the narrative#like. main characters. jade you deserve so much better baby.#and the worldbuilding is cool in THEORY but the actual execution is so messy and difficult to keep track of#even stuff like the epilogues like. had some interesting ideas about narrative and meta concepts about what it means to be a story#the meta stuff is kinda cool#but once again. the actual execution of those ideas was just miserable and left me with such a sour taste in my mouth#tbh that's all probably what made the fandom so prolific#because it was full of so many interesting ideas and characters#but the ideas were poorly executed and the characters were poorly handled#which gives the fandom a lot of room to play in the space#you can pick up the characters or worldbuilding ideas or plot points that you actually liked#and make them your own#idk. reading that comic as a baby english major did something to me#I want to analyze it like I had to analyze some of the questionable literature I read#anyway. the music is still flawless I have no notes there#does anyone wanna classpect the fma characters. i haven't classpected characters in so long im so rusty but i always found it fun

"The Titans were gentle beings, knowing neither fear nor pain. For all their power, it was the Primes who cared for them, guarding their innocent sparks." - Thundercracker, Speaker of Trypticon.
A lil bit of lore below the cut.
In my little continuity, the Primes were indeed Primus's firstborn, but they were made from the suffering of their maker as he fought to survive. The Titans though? They were born to give life, made to spread Primus's gifts to all creation. As such, they are naturally gentle and inherently incapable of violence.
They will not fight back if attacked, nor will they rise to the defense of their citizens (although they will provide weaponry and protection in the form of walls and the like). They cannot even comprehend why one would hurt another outside of the natural order of things. It is to the point where those who care for the remaining Titans have labeled them as having the cognitive capabilities of newbuilds. For all their age and wisdom, Titans are, at their core, the only entities in the universe to maintain a sense of innocence all throughout their lives. They hold no anger, no bitterness, and no grudges. Everything, in their optics, will play out as it should.
As such, the Titans have always had guardians to protect them from a reality that would seek to crush them into dust. During the first age, the Primes filled this role. In the modern era, seekers of Vos have taken on the mantle, guarding and speaking on the behalf of the three remaining Titans on Cybertron.

Shen Qingqiu sat glaring at Shang Qinghua during a peak lord meeting, the whispers of his killing intent keeping everyone on edge.
Shang Qinghua hasn't looked at him once, but not even his cultivation can keep the sweat at bay.
It's the fastest meeting they've ever had. At the end, as Shang Qinghua is attempting to flee back to An Ding, Qi-shimei decides to magnanimously lend him a helping hand by reminding Shen Qingqiu of Shang Qinghua's humanity.
"So~ Shang-shidi, how's that book of yours going?"
It was the wrong move.
Temperature plummeting, the whispers of killing intent roared into a flood; it was as if the very atmosphere was being crushed down upon them. Beating heart's tempo vibrating inside their skulls, the metronome to their own dirge.
"I swear on everything that is holy if you dare say writing has gone anything but abysmally I'll turn your bones into fucking a wind chime."
Shang Qinghua turned to look at the murderous Shen Qingqiu.
He took out a sheaf of papers and slid them over the meeting room table.
He grinned.
Shen Qingqiu was too busy reading to notice. With each passing millisecond his condition worsened. His knuckles turned white. Any kindness that was in his gaze was extinguished.
Three things happened in that moment:
1. The sheaf of paper burst into flames.
2. Shen Qingqiu lunged over the table.
3. Shang Qinghua disappeared into one of Mobei-jun's portals.
It was one of the most productive, quick and eventful peak lord meetings they ever had.
After Shang Qinghua skulked back into Cang Qiong Shen Qingqiu kicked down his door, seized him by the collar, his voice promising murder.
"What. The. Fuck. Was. That."
It turns out Shang Qinghua invented omegaverse.

This rendering of readerly empathy outlined here seems to describe how fiction is received today. If something horrible acts upon a character, the reader can sometimes feel as though the author is punishing some innocent little doll baby with whom the reader has overidentified. The character has become a de facto stand-in for the reader, so the character carries this burden of readerly expectation. Thus, for a character to feel real, we shave down the contours of their lives and their interiority until they match what readers know of their own flow of thoughts and life events. I believe that this accounts for what feels to me like a decline in character in contemporary fiction.

I often see Ezri described as a rich kid. And it's true, but it's more interesting than that!
Because she also grew up outside of Federation space ! She grew up in the Sappora system, which is independent, but under Orion Syndicate influence. Her parents owned one of the largest mining operations here.
While her childhood was materially comfortable, it's not clear that she grew up in a post-scarcity world. Sappora VII seems pretty polluted because of the mining, and the working conditions are hard for her parent's employees.
So while she grew up in the same level of comfortability as Jadzia or Ben (maybe a bit less so because of the pollution?), she really is issued of the bourgeoisie. Her parents are land owners, exploitators. Her social position doesn't exist as such in the Federation (there's an intelligentsia there, but not a bourgeoisie).
And she chose to leave her world for one who chose radically different policies. (I've seen a few people describe the Federation as "not socialist, just post-scarcity", but Cardassians and Romulans seem to have very equivalent technological capabilities. Egalitarianism was a choice, and the federation can be called socialist imo. Not much of a hot take on tumblr, lmao)
I'm not saying that it was virtuous of her to leave (although it's always a hard choice to get away from one's family.) but it's interesting that she made that choice. And I think it's far less trivial than "Ezri's a rich kid" that she was written like that

utter bullshit that we stop growing at a certain age.
humans should grow (both taller and wider) at a continuous rate throughout our lifespans. i want to be 80 years old with the proportions of an average human being except i am the height of a multistory building. that would be so fun. that would require so much societal rearrangement. this isn't a want it's a need

everyone loves talking about the batshit worldbuilding in WoT but I feel like everybody tends to overlook the Vaguely Evil Elves From Another Dimension that have their own officially licensed chutes and ladders-esque board game that you Cannot Ever Win

there's not enough emphasis on g/t interactions with the environment in works. i think. focus is always put on interactions between characters and how they navigate the size difference- which isn't BAD, i'd say it's essential in g/t media even. but i wish we also explored how they do that with the world they occupy
like those little details about how borrowers use small, mundane objects or junk as tools, furniture and etc? LOVE IT. or how they domesticate small animals, traverse the house of a human, how different in volume food and drinks are to them at that size? how a fairy interacts with a (to them enormous) forest flora and fauna?
same for giants!!! i said before that i LOVE when a giant's bigness is emphasized through how they interact with the world - being careful with every step lest they crush something underfoot or cause earthquakes; being as tall as the trees in the forest (if not bigger); getting stuck in (to them) narrow and small places (human infrastructure am i right)
i don't know, i feel like it's rarely acknowledged in g/t works. or at least not enough
