I've been relistening to the homestuck soundtrack album by album while working lately and man. it's reminding me how much I genuinely loved about homestuck, and how that made the aspects of it that sucked so much more frustrating
#I have such a love/hate relationship with this stupid comic#we're vascillati- [gets shot]#no but for real there is so much that's good#really interesting and entertaining characters#and a LOT of them. there is truly a character for everyone#genuinely funny dialogue#interesting worldbuilding#absolutely INSANE utilization of the artistic medium#like. sometimes I think about the panel expanding to fill the whole page in cascade and I go a little crazy#but then for every strength it has. it shoots itself in the foot.#it has interesting compelling characters but because there are so many of them only a few get actual narrative attention and development#and many others just get completely fucked over by the narrative#like. main characters. jade you deserve so much better baby.#and the worldbuilding is cool in THEORY but the actual execution is so messy and difficult to keep track of#even stuff like the epilogues like. had some interesting ideas about narrative and meta concepts about what it means to be a story#the meta stuff is kinda cool#but once again. the actual execution of those ideas was just miserable and left me with such a sour taste in my mouth#tbh that's all probably what made the fandom so prolific#because it was full of so many interesting ideas and characters#but the ideas were poorly executed and the characters were poorly handled#which gives the fandom a lot of room to play in the space#you can pick up the characters or worldbuilding ideas or plot points that you actually liked#and make them your own#idk. reading that comic as a baby english major did something to me#I want to analyze it like I had to analyze some of the questionable literature I read#anyway. the music is still flawless I have no notes there#does anyone wanna classpect the fma characters. i haven't classpected characters in so long im so rusty but i always found it fun

c. 1540 CE: a young man from Chalco, and his dragon.
#em draws stuff#em is posting about temeraire#temeraire#temeraire worldbuilding collection#⚬⚬⚬⚬⚬𐂂#<- tag for organizing when I'm drawing stuff that is temeraireVerse but not in the line of the plot of the books themselves#for school reasons I have been reading a lot about 14th-17th century mesoamerica#and thus am Interested in how that would have potentially played out in temeraireverse...#anyway! not sure if I'll draw these two again but I Have given the lad a day sign name (five deer) so I could Potentially. who can say.#haven't come up with a name for the dragon yet... maybe cipachcoatzin would work if can't think of anything else#<- Please Forgive My Dubious Command of Classical Nahuatl Grammar I Am But A Student#on that note zoomorphic interlace is not very much a style from this period/region but it helps me with composition things#five deer himself is mostly based on the illustration of the tlacuilo's son in the codex mendoza#the dragon is drawn more from a fusion of older scribal styles (ie. the codex borgia) and my own shorthands for dragon anatomy

"The Titans were gentle beings, knowing neither fear nor pain. For all their power, it was the Primes who cared for them, guarding their innocent sparks." - Thundercracker, Speaker of Trypticon.
A lil bit of lore below the cut.
In my little continuity, the Primes were indeed Primus's firstborn, but they were made from the suffering of their maker as he fought to survive. The Titans though? They were born to give life, made to spread Primus's gifts to all creation. As such, they are naturally gentle and inherently incapable of violence.
They will not fight back if attacked, nor will they rise to the defense of their citizens (although they will provide weaponry and protection in the form of walls and the like). They cannot even comprehend why one would hurt another outside of the natural order of things. It is to the point where those who care for the remaining Titans have labeled them as having the cognitive capabilities of newbuilds. For all their age and wisdom, Titans are, at their core, the only entities in the universe to maintain a sense of innocence all throughout their lives. They hold no anger, no bitterness, and no grudges. Everything, in their optics, will play out as it should.
As such, the Titans have always had guardians to protect them from a reality that would seek to crush them into dust. During the first age, the Primes filled this role. In the modern era, seekers of Vos have taken on the mantle, guarding and speaking on the behalf of the three remaining Titans on Cybertron.

Shen Qingqiu sat glaring at Shang Qinghua during a peak lord meeting, the whispers of his killing intent keeping everyone on edge.
Shang Qinghua hasn't looked at him once, but not even his cultivation can keep the sweat at bay.
It's the fastest meeting they've ever had. At the end, as Shang Qinghua is attempting to flee back to An Ding, Qi-shimei decides to magnanimously lend him a helping hand by reminding Shen Qingqiu of Shang Qinghua's humanity.
"So~ Shang-shidi, how's that book of yours going?"
It was the wrong move.
Temperature plummeting, the whispers of killing intent roared into a flood; it was as if the very atmosphere was being crushed down upon them. Beating heart's tempo vibrating inside their skulls, the metronome to their own dirge.
"I swear on everything that is holy if you dare say writing has gone anything but abysmally I'll turn your bones into fucking a wind chime."
Shang Qinghua turned to look at the murderous Shen Qingqiu.
He took out a sheaf of papers and slid them over the meeting room table.
He grinned.
Shen Qingqiu was too busy reading to notice. With each passing millisecond his condition worsened. His knuckles turned white. Any kindness that was in his gaze was extinguished.
Three things happened in that moment:
1. The sheaf of paper burst into flames.
2. Shen Qingqiu lunged over the table.
3. Shang Qinghua disappeared into one of Mobei-jun's portals.
It was one of the most productive, quick and eventful peak lord meetings they ever had.
After Shang Qinghua skulked back into Cang Qiong Shen Qingqiu kicked down his door, seized him by the collar, his voice promising murder.
"What. The. Fuck. Was. That."
It turns out Shang Qinghua invented omegaverse.
#cumplane#the papers were the main protagonist and love interest going into heat/rut and banging#shen yuan was actually beta reading and editing for shang qinghua & was upset at how many times the protag had been described as 'alluring'#so shang qinghua just turned it into omegaverse 'they cant help it bro' *shrugs*#'i thought u liked worldbuilding ?'#its also mpreg#svsss#svsss crack#shen yuan#shen qingqiu#shang qinghua

Vague concept doodles I was playing w/ for the idea of what spider syndrome might look like in satyrs . Kinda couldn't really make these look right though, just like the actual guy's design
#hoof draws#idk. misc worldbuilding ig#interesting to consider what 'common' mutations/conditions might look like in satyrs#or whether they would have unique medical problems just based on their nature as hybrids...#also for context --- syndrome which effects bone growth and makes the legs abnormally long/thin- making it hard to walk/nurse

This rendering of readerly empathy outlined here seems to describe how fiction is received today. If something horrible acts upon a character, the reader can sometimes feel as though the author is punishing some innocent little doll baby with whom the reader has overidentified. The character has become a de facto stand-in for the reader, so the character carries this burden of readerly expectation. Thus, for a character to feel real, we shave down the contours of their lives and their interiority until they match what readers know of their own flow of thoughts and life events. I believe that this accounts for what feels to me like a decline in character in contemporary fiction.
— Brandon Taylor, "False Light: Moral Worldbuilding and the Virtues of Evil"
#I am taking this bit out bc it has a specific sentiment I think relevant to discussions here that is easier to pull than the rest#which the rest ALSO tbh relevant in different ways to a lot of discussions here but is less easily quotable so I do just rec reading it all#interesting essay on virtues of there being Evil in fiction and how the ubiquity of a specific kind of moral relativism is a tiring morass#and on moral worldbuilding and modern fiction being too anxious to commit to it or to Evil Existing bc of fear over asserting a perspective

remembered @hehe-hoho-ohno's misfits au it's sooooo good and i love it. CHEERS AND APPLAUSE. YAY
#submas#misfits au#<- it gets it own tag i might draw more. it's good#sketches#(if you want me to tag as something else lmk though i don't wanna encroach on your guys or anything)#BUT ANYWAYS. best fucking submas writer ON the planet the characterization is sooooo good to me. chefs kiss#like generally i'm not big into aus at ALL (especially ones that aren't super related to the source material and world)#but the worldbuilding is so interesting and the characterizations of ingo and emmet are sooo fantastic like genuinely phenomenal#in all of their works#I LIKE IT BASICALLY.#i wanted to do a scene redraw but i couldn't pick and because so much of what captivates me is the like. it's very emotionally driven#that a little more to me than the physicality of the scenes is what i like so much. so idk if i could do it justice LMAO#i've been following the story since it started being posted and it's just really good. probably my favourite submas fic#the author posted another chapter 7 wip today SPECIFICALLY for me 💖(<- not actually)

"Wah this section of worldbuilding I'm doing is so minute and kinda pointless to the larger scheme of things, hurr durr I'm just focusing on some whatever part when I have actual story and plot to figure out-" WHO CARES. YOU ARE THE GOD OF YOUR UNIVERSE. HAVE FUN CREATING IT.
#Tired of seeing self deprecating writer memes about how silly it is to focus on some seemingly pointless details#Bc it caught your interest#JUST DO THAT THEN. IF YOU WANT. ENJOY IT. I often see Ezri described as a rich kid. And it's true, but it's more interesting than that!
Because she also grew up outside of Federation space ! She grew up in the Sappora system, which is independent, but under Orion Syndicate influence. Her parents owned one of the largest mining operations here.
While her childhood was materially comfortable, it's not clear that she grew up in a post-scarcity world. Sappora VII seems pretty polluted because of the mining, and the working conditions are hard for her parent's employees.
So while she grew up in the same level of comfortability as Jadzia or Ben (maybe a bit less so because of the pollution?), she really is issued of the bourgeoisie. Her parents are land owners, exploitators. Her social position doesn't exist as such in the Federation (there's an intelligentsia there, but not a bourgeoisie).
And she chose to leave her world for one who chose radically different policies. (I've seen a few people describe the Federation as "not socialist, just post-scarcity", but Cardassians and Romulans seem to have very equivalent technological capabilities. Egalitarianism was a choice, and the federation can be called socialist imo. Not much of a hot take on tumblr, lmao)
I'm not saying that it was virtuous of her to leave (although it's always a hard choice to get away from one's family.) but it's interesting that she made that choice. And I think it's far less trivial than "Ezri's a rich kid" that she was written like that
#prodigal daughter isnt very popular and I understand that#But I think it has interesting points worldbuilding and characterisation wise#star trek#deep space nine#prodigal daughter#ezri dax

utter bullshit that we stop growing at a certain age.
humans should grow (both taller and wider) at a continuous rate throughout our lifespans. i want to be 80 years old with the proportions of an average human being except i am the height of a multistory building. that would be so fun. that would require so much societal rearrangement. this isn't a want it's a need
#snyesyd#you want worldbuilding? here's your worldbuilding *shoves it across the table*#take it! confiscate it from me! i cannot be trusted to provide a nurturing home environment.#there are legends that certain tall people who manage to reach the age of 100 have in fact surpassed the height of the statue of liberty#it hasn't been proven solely bc people that Old and Tall have no interest whatsoever in standing up just to prove/document a point#they are 100+ years old and 150+ feet tall and they are Tired and they Do Not Give A Shit#they will stand up on their great-great-grandkid's birthday so the kid can sit on their shoulder & survey the majesty of nature & etc#anything more than that? they're not interested they're staying in bed

everyone loves talking about the batshit worldbuilding in WoT but I feel like everybody tends to overlook the Vaguely Evil Elves From Another Dimension that have their own officially licensed chutes and ladders-esque board game that you Cannot Ever Win
#unless you're a 9 year old boy who's surrogate father just broke their entire reality#society when olver won snakes and foxes without cheating#the day I get my hands on a real life snakes and foxes game is the day that I can die happy#but idk I feel like everybody tends to overlook the aelfinn and the eelfinn in favor of like. the ogier and radioactive two rivers#and the many. many. m a n y. other insane worldbuilding Choices robert jordan made#which are all valid I mean WoT is fucking insane#but I think we should have more aelfinn and eelfinn appreciation on this webbed site#like they're so interesting!!!!!! there's so much to unpack!!!!!!!!!#vin speaks#wheel of time#wot book spoilers#wheel of time spoilers#wot spoilers#mat cauthon#the shadow rising#towers of midnight

there's not enough emphasis on g/t interactions with the environment in works. i think. focus is always put on interactions between characters and how they navigate the size difference- which isn't BAD, i'd say it's essential in g/t media even. but i wish we also explored how they do that with the world they occupy
like those little details about how borrowers use small, mundane objects or junk as tools, furniture and etc? LOVE IT. or how they domesticate small animals, traverse the house of a human, how different in volume food and drinks are to them at that size? how a fairy interacts with a (to them enormous) forest flora and fauna?
same for giants!!! i said before that i LOVE when a giant's bigness is emphasized through how they interact with the world - being careful with every step lest they crush something underfoot or cause earthquakes; being as tall as the trees in the forest (if not bigger); getting stuck in (to them) narrow and small places (human infrastructure am i right)
i don't know, i feel like it's rarely acknowledged in g/t works. or at least not enough
#g speaks#g/t#giant/tiny#giant tiny#g/t community#sfw g/t#g/t thoughts#g/t tropes#this one fic i've been working on based on an idea i shared once is pretty much... just g/t interactions with the world#actual human and giant interactions don't come into play until a bit later. first part is focused entirely on how giants live#because i love worldbuilding. also i want to explore how a giant interacts with such a small world#i know not everyone might be interested until an actual tiny is involved but DAMN IT i'm having fun!!
