so again, I'm rereading howl's moving castle LMFAO and truly diana wynne jones' disdain for in depth sensory description is sooo cool. I think I've arrived at one of the most basic things that fascinates me about this book and that drew me in and it's something about how descriptive language and tone intersect. there's a lot of two-step visual description, but very little of the specific descriptive language I'm accustomed to. I can know that something looks lightweight because of the way that michael is carrying it, or that the slime is green and has a weird reaction when you dump ash on it, or that michael obviously wished he had not spoken, or that from the way howls feet are braced it's clear he is exerting great force, but it's almost rare that there's a plain description of what's going on. even if there is a proper one, there's always an opinion or extrapolation at the end of it: the wind tore at sophie's face so savagely that she thought she'd end up with half her face behind each ear. generally what I find is that instead of inferring how a character must feel based on how they are acting, you get to make up the specifics about a character's actions or experience based on how the narrator tells you they feel about it. the writing isn't broken down into small pieces for you to put together; it's made of big ones. a single description hits about three different ideas, and there's another similar one in the next paragraph, and you have to keep up. it drives the story along at a committed pace as well as makes the magic system feel very unique, and then that uniquely maintained system becomes scaffolding for the story's themes to grow off of

there comes a time when your parent does something that you've always been conditioned to accept as "normal" in plain view of a stranger who is not used to this behavior, and their reaction does something to your brain that makes everything kind of click into place

for me it was when I was a teenager and my dentist was showing my mother the procedure she had done on her own teeth (gum graft, I was being considered for it) and the dentist pulls up her own lips to show how everything looks natural after it's healed

and my mom leans in very, very close to the dentist to peer into her mouth, and she lifts her fingers to point to at this dentist's gums. and she sticks her fingers inside this woman's mouth.

and the dentist kind of reels back like "heyyy what the fuck" except not saying that because my mom is still a potential client, right. but I'm like oooh okay okay I see. this cavalier boundary breaking and lack of bodily autonomy in our household isn't normal. cool. good to know.

"I want you to always be you" is one of the most powerful lines ever written.

It implies loving the other person inside and out, cherishing every last detail about them. But it's not just the plain meaning that makes it so special. It's the way it was delivered in the moment it was delivered. It was a farewell, it was a fervent last wish, it was Arthur giving Merlin something he had never dared think he'd get: his full acceptance for whom he truly was. It was Arthur telling Merlin 'I finally know you, and I accept you and love you with everything I have. You are clumsy and foolish and funny and kind and loyal and yes, magic, and I love every single facet of you to the point I couldn't bear it if you lost any of them. You are perfect to me.'

We have so many 'I love yous' in so many shows. This is far better. It's everything we could have dreamt of getting, and we got it. Not an 'I love you' but an 'I love everything that makes you be you' coming from the one character we would never have expected it and being given to a beloved protagonist who had been living in fear of his other half’s rejection from the moment they met.

It simply cannot be bested. And it makes me cry every. single. time.

My mom started watching Our Flag Means Death and you know what just hit me? She's not going to have to wait for season two for a year and a half. No one is ever going to have to wait for season two again.

It got me thinking about new fans and how much of a completely different experience must it be to watch season two directly after watching season one for the very first time. They don't have to stop after episode 10 and sit with Ed's pain and Stede's desperation.

Will they think that Lucius is dead? The last image of the show isn't Ed sobbing anymore? They can just watch the next episode like it's nothing? If they want to they can have the reunion right away?

How much more unhinged is Ed going to look to them if they haven't had time to sit and wallow with him for months? If they don't have to stop and feel the pain? If they don't have the time and uncertainty of not even knowing if the show was going to be renewed...

Just the idea of being able to watch season two right away is kind of unfathomable to me.

So do we think the non water flight version of the text is actually a cipher or nah?

I initially thought so, it looked like a replacement cipher with missing letters of based on the patterning, (potentially one of those plus sign replacement ciphers, I forget what they are called if they have a name) but now that I’ve seen the corresponding plaintext it’s clear it’s not simple substitution w missing bits at the very least.

Could potentially be looking at a more advanced cipher but idk if the devs would go that far especially since they pretty much gave us the plaintext, so they could’ve just created a cipherlike set of symbols that doesn’t decrypt to anything. If that’s the case they did a good job making something that looked reasonably enough like a cipher that I played around with it for a little bit. But it’s also not entirely impossible they used something a tad more advanced especially given that a simple substitution would get broken quite quickly.

my sense of urgency for this election was all used up watching a genocide play out live on instagram while my mom continued to talk about which politician might make the housing market better and i tried not to genuinely lose my mind over the dissonance. in all honesty short of bombs dropping on americans' houses my adrenal glands are beyond checked out. i'll show up to the polls and do my part and try to plug into the bare bones direct action i can find in the middle of nowhere deep red county state but god. there are so many posts circulating trying to fear monger me into voting for one genocidal president of this genocidal nation over another and i may as well live on a different planet. i can fathom the urgency but i could not make myself feel it short of being held at gunpoint. which may even be on the ballot but that's how americans have been voting for decades now and each of them regardless of party has worried about the idea of being held at gunpoint while a right of theirs is taken away while there are people who are already being held at gunpoint and their rights have already been taken away by the very people being beamed into my eyeballs as the escape from this hypothetical violence that's already non-hypothetically happened to millions who aren't US liberals because of the america they're trying to save from trump the same america regardless of democrats or republicans or whigs or federalists and does anyone else feel like they're going crazy
