so again, I'm rereading howl's moving castle LMFAO and truly diana wynne jones' disdain for in depth sensory description is sooo cool. I think I've arrived at one of the most basic things that fascinates me about this book and that drew me in and it's something about how descriptive language and tone intersect. there's a lot of two-step visual description, but very little of the specific descriptive language I'm accustomed to. I can know that something looks lightweight because of the way that michael is carrying it, or that the slime is green and has a weird reaction when you dump ash on it, or that michael obviously wished he had not spoken, or that from the way howls feet are braced it's clear he is exerting great force, but it's almost rare that there's a plain description of what's going on. even if there is a proper one, there's always an opinion or extrapolation at the end of it: the wind tore at sophie's face so savagely that she thought she'd end up with half her face behind each ear. generally what I find is that instead of inferring how a character must feel based on how they are acting, you get to make up the specifics about a character's actions or experience based on how the narrator tells you they feel about it. the writing isn't broken down into small pieces for you to put together; it's made of big ones. a single description hits about three different ideas, and there's another similar one in the next paragraph, and you have to keep up. it drives the story along at a committed pace as well as makes the magic system feel very unique, and then that uniquely maintained system becomes scaffolding for the story's themes to grow off of

my favorite type of blorbo is "entirely new types of trauma being invented for them within this very story" kinda characters. "the dsm cannot even begin to adequately describe what is going on in there" kinda characters. "they shouldn't be scared of therapy, therapy should be scared of them" kinda characters

there comes a time when your parent does something that you've always been conditioned to accept as "normal" in plain view of a stranger who is not used to this behavior, and their reaction does something to your brain that makes everything kind of click into place

for me it was when I was a teenager and my dentist was showing my mother the procedure she had done on her own teeth (gum graft, I was being considered for it) and the dentist pulls up her own lips to show how everything looks natural after it's healed

and my mom leans in very, very close to the dentist to peer into her mouth, and she lifts her fingers to point to at this dentist's gums. and she sticks her fingers inside this woman's mouth.

and the dentist kind of reels back like "heyyy what the fuck" except not saying that because my mom is still a potential client, right. but I'm like oooh okay okay I see. this cavalier boundary breaking and lack of bodily autonomy in our household isn't normal. cool. good to know.

I don’t know man there’s just something about characters filled with rage. All that fucking rage and nobody knows where it starts or where it ends. And no one knows what to fucking do with it or where it comes from. Why it feels like it’s all that keeps them going. God when all you are is rage and the only question the world can ask is “why are you so angry?” And the Only answer you have is “I don’t know!”

listen. ik i said no more big snippets. BUT. u haven’t even seen any of chapter 3 of the sequel yet & i’m having sm fun writing it & there’s no actual spoilers involved here, just them being sweet for the thousandth time 🧚

so here’s little bit of the beginning of my chapter 3 draft !!! they’re spending an entire weekend at home during a snowstorm !!! i love it here !!!

“Good morning,” Remus whispered into his hair. “Again.”

Sirius groaned and stretched long, narrowly avoiding whacking the side of Remus’ head with his elbow before falling limp on top of him again.

“Time is it?”

He felt Remus crane his neck and reach to the bedside table for his phone.

“Almost ten,” he answered. “Sleep good?”

Sirius gave a vaguely affirmative little grunt, shifted himself around and propped his chin on the center of Remus’ chest. He peeked one eye open and found Remus already looking, watching him with dark, sleepy eyes and a fond little smile.

“You’re cute,” Sirius mumbled, lifting to an elbow and tucking his hand beneath his chin, then resting his other arm on Remus’ good shoulder to run lazy fingers through his hair. It was still a bit too early to do the whole opening his eyes thing, so he opted to keep them shut for now. “How long’ve you been up?”

“An hour or so,” Remus said quietly. He settled in beneath him with a contended sigh, slipped his hands beneath all their layers of blankets and throws to loop around Sirius’ lower back, curling his thumbs in slow, warm circles against skin. “Can’t really sleep past nine anymore.”

Sirius hummed. “You’re missing out. My best sleep happens after nine.”

“Oh, I know,” Remus laughed softly. “You were practically dead to the world when I woke up again. Had to check you were still breathing.”

Sirius snorted, squinted on eye open and let himself smile. “You’re one to talk. Half the time I come to bed nowadays you’re already sacked out.”

“Well, I have this little thing called a normal sleep schedule,” Remus retaliated with a gentle pinch to his side. “You should try it.”
