so again, I'm rereading howl's moving castle LMFAO and truly diana wynne jones' disdain for in depth sensory description is sooo cool. I think I've arrived at one of the most basic things that fascinates me about this book and that drew me in and it's something about how descriptive language and tone intersect. there's a lot of two-step visual description, but very little of the specific descriptive language I'm accustomed to. I can know that something looks lightweight because of the way that michael is carrying it, or that the slime is green and has a weird reaction when you dump ash on it, or that michael obviously wished he had not spoken, or that from the way howls feet are braced it's clear he is exerting great force, but it's almost rare that there's a plain description of what's going on. even if there is a proper one, there's always an opinion or extrapolation at the end of it: the wind tore at sophie's face so savagely that she thought she'd end up with half her face behind each ear. generally what I find is that instead of inferring how a character must feel based on how they are acting, you get to make up the specifics about a character's actions or experience based on how the narrator tells you they feel about it. the writing isn't broken down into small pieces for you to put together; it's made of big ones. a single description hits about three different ideas, and there's another similar one in the next paragraph, and you have to keep up. it drives the story along at a committed pace as well as makes the magic system feel very unique, and then that uniquely maintained system becomes scaffolding for the story's themes to grow off of

#arueshalae's quest... Delicious#i love it when companion quests not only are amazing in their own right but also allow room for me to expand on the pc... good shit#context-> i been thinking#since elluin died and came back very very wrong via botched wild hunt hunt or something of the sort#(dont ask me details this is all vague hc i only have the wiki to go off of for lore )#just. where would his soul have landed if he had just died normally?#well. he's always been chaotic good. so#he should be at the club meme voice: he should be at elysium#something something the personification of the values Dimalchio abandoned staring him in the face#something about immortality granted through birth along with gifts unfathomable to mortals#versus immortality granted unwillingly. about the things one now considers trivial being what another was eternally barred from#something something envy something something rage#i cant wait to get here on azata path this is going to be JUICY to compare....#ellu and arue are such a good pair to think about friendship wise in general...#trust me im talking about him more but mostly because it's a first run and im still developing him in my mind#but like dude... guy whose morals are the only part of himself he even considers vaguely salvageable#(even though he actually doesnt consider himself good- fun fact)#paired with girl trying desperately to learn and understand morality and undo the damage she did#also the fact that a bunch of the things elluin says to her he mostly says with the intent of putting some responsibility on the corrupted#which she instead interprets as him trying to absolve her of responsibility ..#i juist love them!#love them so much. throwing them in the microwave#(then there's also the azata-blooded assimar-shaped elephant in the room but im going to refrain from talking about him#because we dont have time to unpack aaaall that)#riv finds the path that sure is wrathfully righteous#oc: elluin

Ok I never even knew jack and Niki were dating let alone having a cheating scandal was this all out in the open and just missed or what, also she is so out of his league how did that happen
it wasn't out in the open and it's not totally confirmed that they were officially dating but they were definitely together in some capacity for a couple months and then promptly stopped interacting at all. the cheating part comes from her making a tiktok like a month later about her last bf cheating on her 😭 plus he was seen with eleanor (his current public gf) around the time of the breakup lol

it always strikes me as wild, now that I've read it, that the left hand of darkness is known for its revolutionary take on gender. not because its take on gender was or is not revolutionary, but because it is part of a bigger, more revolutionary take, and on much bigger concepts, than I have ever before seen—when I read it in high school at 16, I almost forgot about the gender thing. looking back on it after I finished the gender thing didn't even hold a candle to the political thing, and the just. general revolution of awareness thing.
the way it approached gender was but a small part of a story that takes on truth and perception in honestly mind bending ways. every bit of the story that was about the fastnesses, and the relevance of the politics and cultures within the rivalling countries he spends his time in as I grew up into the usa's trump/pence administration, completely eclipsed the gender. even now reading the passage in the very first chapter about patriotism being about fear rather than love—the simple, bare-bones setup of the politics that happen later in the book—is kinda bone chilling.
anyways. that's really all i just think it's crazy that most the things I've heard about this book have to do with the gender facet of it all

I love when characters say swears in books and for one reason or another—target age group, vibes, whatever—instead of writing out the swear words they just say the character swore or something like that and you get to guess or choose what they said. sophie saying 'a word she learned had from martha, that neither old ladies nor young girls are supposed to know' is infinitely funnier than any curse word could possibly be
