Wants
Rise Leonardo x Reader imagine
Info + Warnings: Reader needs help wrapping gifts at the last second before a party. Leo's their hero. And a huge distraction. No gendered language, pronouns, or Y.N used for Reader. An attempt at Spanish by a very not Spanish speaking writer. Established relationship. Arguably steamy. Set a few years post movie.
Commentary: IDK what the fuck happened here.
See, here's the thing.
You are extremely, incredibly kissable.
He knows this. He knows this like he knows his swords are sharp. He knows it in his bones.
He also knows you have somewhere to be.
(Really, his motives were good. He came over just to help you finish wrapping your friend's birthday gifts (okay, and give you shit for only now getting around to it). He just wanted to be a supportive boyfriend and make sure you had time to get ready in peace.)
And yet, because he's either an idiot or an asshole, here he is, boxing you in at your table and kissing you.
See, the thing... you look really, really good. And you smiled at him when you walked out of your room, all dressed up and looking forward to the party you're going to and grateful for his help.
And he's only human- turtle- hm.
He's not immune, is his point.
So here you are, getting kissed, and his hands are on your waist and yours are grabbing handfuls of his shirt and he's very, very happy.
It's only when you gasp against him- his hand slipped, okay, he hadn't meant to squeeze your hip like that- and the sound makes his heart skip one beat and crash into another that he realizes- with all of the force of getting hit by a train- that he has to stop.
It's like cutting off his own arm.
But he does it, he pulls back- pushes back against every fiber of his being that wants to keep you close enough that he can almost hear your heartbeat- because you have places to be.
And you deserve much, much better than him being a desperate disaster against your dining table.
Now he's staring.
He's staring and his hands are still on your waist and your hip and he has to stop. Has to. Needs to. Like, muy rápido, right now, yesterday has to stop.
"...Hi," He says, voice all shaky and gooey through his grin.
"Hi," You repeat, a little dazed as you're still clinging to his shirt.
You're smiling at him again. He's not sure you ever stopped.
Shit. Fuck. He has to walk away.
He wants to keep you there for the rest of your natural lives.
"You gotta go," He mutters grimly, and he realizes how fucked it sounds immediately, and he throws himself into an uncharacteristically jumbled explanation because his brain is still offline. "It's late- you gotta- the thing- I'm- fuck I don't want to stop kissing you."
You cock your head as you process his messy babble, blinking twice, and then you're laughing.
And then he's laughing, because really it's that or take one of your butter knives and portal himself into the ocean, and if he does that he can't do this again.
"I gotta go," You confirm with a wry, bittersweet smile, not letting go of his shirt.
It's going to be so wrinkled.
He literally could not give less of a fuck.
"You gotta go," He repeats, more to himself than you, and you must know that because you're laughing again and you must really not care about... whatever urgent thing you have to go to... whatever that was, because you're not helping him stop like. At all.
You're gonna be the death of him one day.
"Maybe... you could come back by tonight? We could watch that stupid racing movie you've been talking about-"
"It's a heist movie, thank you-"
"-And, uh..."
"Don't say chill. I'll explode. I'll expire."
"I was trying to say cuddle," You say, bashful and exasperated at the same time, somehow. As though he'd ever say no. As if he knows how to say no to you. As though he ever, ever stood a chance.
It's beyond cute. It's enough to make him want to squish you and literally never let you go.
"You gotta go," He groans, his hands darting up to cup your cheeks and squeeze your face softly. "You're gonna drive me insane. What even is this again?"
"Birthday party."
"They'll have another-"
"Leo!" You laugh over his playful persuasion.
"You can send a card-"
"Leo."
"I'll pay for postage. I'll lick the stamp."
"Leonardo," You breathe, all fond exasperation, as though you'd ever let go of his shirt. As though you're any better than he is.
He almost wants to push just a little farther, see what else he can get you to call him.
He really wants to.
He wants a lot of things around you.
And even more when he's not around you.
And now, he's facing min-ee-mum four hours being not around you.
He hates it.
He takes the feeling and balls it up and three-point-shoots it into his mind's trashcan, because you deserve to go and have fun and be merry and all that jazz. He gets you to himself enough- never enough, literally never enough- that he can share.
Plus, he did a fantastic job wrapping those gifts.
And, as easily as he twists and leads and convinces other people, he's played himself right into a corner, because now it's both you deserve him being normal here AND his ego.
He'd be impressed by himself if it weren't for the fact that it means he loses.
He shakes his head a little, because he lost the plot minutes ago and you really gotta go and he's still got you against the table.
"Movie night?" He asks, just to hear you talk. He knows the answer.
"Movie night," You confirm happily, releasing his shirt.
He whines a little. He's barely even embarrassed at this point.
You laugh again and smooth the fabric out, hands warm on his plastron and making him a little insane again, before you press a kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for your help, honey."
"Thank me by making sure those are put front and center on the table, yeah?"
You glance at the boxes- done up in blue ribbon, you notice- and nod. "Art deserves to be displayed," You say seriously, and he's dangerously close to kissing you again because you're perfect.
"Yoooou-"
"Gotta go?" You finish with a knowing grin, eyes smug, head tilted playfully, perfect.
"Extremely, extremely yes. If you don't go I'm never gonna let you go. You gotta go."
"Hm..."
"Nope!" He says quickly, cutting off whatever tease is about to come out of your mouth, clinging to his sanity by half a thread. "Nope, nope, you are taking those boxes and you are going and you're going to have a great time and be safe and that is final."
"Are you telling me or yourself?"
Perfect. The death of him. Smug and clever and kissable and the worst and the best.
"Both, apparently."
"...I can be a few minutes late-"
"Baby, gorgeous, mi vida, if you don't get out of this apartment-"
You laugh bright and mischievous and delightful, and you press a quick kiss to his lips, and you scoop up the gifts and your keys ("You can port out, right?" "I think I'll manage.") and your phone and wallet and he grabs the door for you, because he's a gentleman (unwilling to be an inch farther from you than he has to).
"See you tonight," You promise, turning back to look him in the eye with more open affection than he was ready to see outside his own reflection.
"See you tonight," He agrees, knowing he sounds lovesick.
You leave, he closes the door, he slumps forwards to rest his forehead against it as he turns the lock and laughs breathlessly because his chest feels like it's going to explode from how much of it is just you.

To what purpose, April, do you return again? (or: finally, a pinned post for April)
Hi all. I'm Jessie Lynn McMains, aka Rust Belt Jessie. I'm an Xennial/Elder Millenial (please don't call me a Geriatric Millenial, thank you) writer/artist/zine-maker/etc. (I wear many hats.) I'm queer and nonbinary/genderfluid, and as far as pronouns go, I’m okay with any human pronoun (they and she are my most-used, but I like he, too, and I especially like it when people switch up the pronouns they use for me). I’m disabled and neurodivergent.
I live with my partner and our two kiddos, both of whom are also neurodivergent, and right now I’m supporting all of us on whatever money I earn. I do freelance copywriting and editing as my main thing, but I also make a decent chunk of my income from selling my zines and books and pins and whatever else I make, so the more I sell, the better able I am to pay bills and take care of my family.
Through my Ko-fi, you can buy my zines and books (I have both poetry and prose available) and pins, as well as commission me to make you a music-inspired mini-collage or hire me to edit your own writing. Or also just throw me a few bucks if you appreciate the content I make available for free.
If you live outside the US (I can only ship within the US via Ko-fi, because setting up shipping for multiple countries is a pain the butt), or just prefer to purchase something or donate via a different platform, I also have PayPal and Venmo (@ JessieLynnMcMains).
I also have a Substack newsletter. I try to send something out at least once a month. Sometimes it's a longer piece about music and nostalgia (I recently started a series called These Fucking Songs, for just that purpose), sometimes it's just updates on what I'm up to, sometimes it's something else. I'm currently working on one about poetry, and my writing process, and revision.
As if that weren't enough, this month I'm doing a 30/30 on the Tupelo Press site, which not only means I have to write a poem every day to be posted the next day, but I am also fundraising for Tupelo Press. My goal is to raise $350 by the end of the month. You can follow along with my daily poems here (the newest is always at the top; scroll down to read previous days), and the fundraising page is here. (I'm also offering some cool incentives for people who donate; more info about all that is available on the fundraising page.)
I'm pro-trans, pro-vaccine, pro-sex worker, pro-abortion, pro-Black Lives Matter. I'm for harm reduction for any drug user or addict, meaning I want them to be able to use drugs as safely as possible, rather than forcing them into rehab or incarcerating them. I'm anti-censorship and anti-fascist. I believe everyone, everyone, should have a safe place to sleep and enough to eat without having to earn it. I consider myself an anarcho-socialist, basically, but I do vote. I'm telling you all that because if you are vehemently against any of those things, we'll probably not get along.
I'm a forever-goth/punk who loves all kinds of music. (Things on heavy rotation for me as I write this are: The Replacements, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Oliver Nelson.) I'm femme but I'm a disaster femme; when I use nailpolish it's always sloppy and/or chipped, when I wear eyeliner it's always crooked and/or smeared, and I am incapable of not ripping a hole or two in every pair of tights and stockings I own. I love art and film and theater and literature and music. I'm a Shakespeare stan, I love growing my own vegetables, I collect souvenir pennies and stick and poke tattoos. I'm always a slut in theory, even when not always in practice. I'm perpetually nostalgic, melancholy, and restless. I spend all my free time posting pictures of myself on the internet and trying to prove I'm punk to anyone that'll listen.
Want more Jessie content? There's my website (still under construction, but it exists). Or you could try searching the my writing, my art, Jessie Lynn McMains, or Rust Belt Jessie tags on this blog. I also have a side blog, where I tend to post more frequently than I do on this blog. If you ask nice, I'll probably give you the URL.
On that note, my DMs and asks are open, and, as of right now, anon is on.
I think that's it! As always, whether you can send any $$ my way (or to my fundraiser) currently or not, keeping this post circulating helps. Thanks much.

Asking the Right Question for the Best Personal Readings—Part 1
Phrasing questions well is important whether you're a reader or querent. Confusion often goes back to the question. To avoid lack of clarity and be extra kind to your reader, keep these in mind!:
Ask exactly, specifically what you want to know; Ask from the most productive angle.
You may get “noise” or irrelevant info if you’re not precise. Many people get readings on feelings or the most changeable, abstract parts of a situation, when there's concrete things you can ask about. Here's a common example:
Querent A asks how their crush feels about them. It seems like their crush likes them and wants to make a move, but there’s mixed signals. Querent A just want to know if they’re planning on taking this farther. Ding ding ding, we have the issue. Querent A is interested in what their crush is DOING; the thing weighing on them is lack of movement and clarity. But, they asked how their crush feels. Someone can feel all sorts of things, but feelings and action are different questions. Reading into feelings does not necessarily provide insight on reality, especially if you're only getting a few cards pulled. Querent A could discover their crush has strong feelings for them, but with no further insight into the actual issue, this could be confusing. A better question would be something like, “what do I need to know about moving my relationship forward with my crush?” This addresses the root of their concern and also applies the wisdom of point 2.
When in doubt or if you can't make your question specific, asking what advice you need to hear about the situation is good. This brings in overall helpful messages as opposed to limiting yourself to one aspect. It's also great when you want a topic read but don't have specific questions.
You are not powerless
Your question should not remove agency from your life!! Questions that frame life as something completely out of your control or provide an answer you can't take action on can be mentally harmful. It's helpful to ask about things we can affect, remaining grounded in reality and responsibility. These questions also fall into the trap of point 1; asking something from an unhelpful angle. Notice how the revised question in example 1 puts the querent in a place to take action if possible. Example:
Querent B has been insecure about many different things, from work to relationship. They're getting 2 questions read, "will my girlfriend and I break up?" and "will I ever get my dream job?" Both of these treat fate like a yes/no scenario instead of something you co-create. If the querent doesn't hear what they'd like, they'll feel worse off. These questions are also not specific— if the answers are yes, that could be tomorrow or in 65 years. Questions like, "what do I need to pay attention to in my relationship?" or, "what can I do to improve my chances for my dream job?" support the querent in working on their life.
It's important to think about what answers you may get. Questions you're not prepared to hear tough answers for are best left for when you're ready or rephrased. If we focus on ourselves as the writer instead of a character in a story, we get better readings and better outcomes in all things.
Don’t ask the same thing over and over in a short span of time.
"Some of y’all bout to be real mad at me, but it must be said-" Asking the same question repeatedly is a recipe for disaster! Put the cards down 💥💥🔫!
Tarot is an introspective tool; it works best when we look within ourselves and the symbolism for meaning. The more reflection, the more learned. When we repeatedly read the same question in a short time, we get hungry for answers but not learning. It’s like reading a book and never stopping to think about it.
Often, we redo readings in two main cases. One, we're confused. The nature of tarot is any card can offer a truth about anything. Sit with the cards, research their meanings within your topic. Break it down into elements or numerology, which you can look up. Sometimes we need refreshers or clarifiers, but this is more reasonable for say a second reading after digesting the first, and not 4+ in a couple weeks (assuming this is not a routine, like daily pulls). Doing a lot of readings can be great for learning tarot—when varied.
The second common case is not liking what the cards said. Some say their cards never refer to the question asked. They don't believe the cards pulled can be their answer, or they're new readers and don't know how to relate the cards to the topic. Some try and try again for positive answers like slot machines.
Overdoing readings is draining to mental health. As a buyer, it also makes you susceptible to scammers who tailor messages to what you want to hear. So, approach with an open mind and sit with answers before asking again. As a querent, ask your reader if they could explain some of their card interpretation if you're confused! You can post in tarot communities and ask for opinions or education. Every reader has their own style, so different interpretations are normal as long as you can trace a thought process! If you feel your deck is hard to personally interpret as a reader, you may need to try other decks or readings that connect with your intuition, but don't forget to learn basics as well!
Thank you for reading!—Tip Link | Paid Reading Info in Pinned Post!

Kissing as a distraction with ZY,YJ,Arkham,Gotham and telltale Edward (with slight elements of enemies to lovers pls)
PD:You are my personal favorite writer for the green bean
Kissing as a Distraction
Riddler Headcanons PLEASE YOU ARE TOO KIND that means so much to me ;-; ok here are some mean green beans getting smooched and distracted 💚 request info • prompt list • send me a request • kofi • masterlist minors DNI!! 🔞 cw: mostly fluff, some suggestive stuff, lil bit of daddy kink because i am not well
btas
he's grateful for it, and he doesn't consider it a distraction at all
just a sweet show of affection, not an interruption
he would never think of anything to be more important than you
realistically, to him, everything else is a distraction
because he'd rather spend all of his time focused on you
gotham
it was a nice try, really. admirable, but misguided
and you meant well, you didn't want him to stop infodumping
you just thought he might appreciate a brief intermission
and you certainly would, which is why you kissed him
but he just kept going, talking against you, muffled and adorable
dano
do you think kissing him mid-rant is going to distract him?
really? from the plans he's been working on for so long?
actually... they might. a touch of kindness and softness...
it's enough to make anyone reconsider mass murder
congratulations, you've averted disaster with one smooch
arkham
not that he doesn't appreciate affection now and then, of course
but this was absolutely not the time, so he's pushing you away
and scolding you probably, chewing you out for distracting him
when he was working on something far more important
the slight twitch in his pants suggests he enjoyed it though
young justice
it would definitely distract him, might even do more
like cause him to have a nervous breakdown, or heart palpitations
but he's distracted alright... he's actually not really doing anything
his eyes have glazed over too... and is he breathing?
ok quick throw a glass of water on the poor boy
zero year
it's more likely than not that you would kiss him to shut him up
a distraction from whatever horrible/rambling things he was saying
but it always does the trick, because he's quick to change priorities
if there's anything that can distract him, it's physical contact
he might suggest you amp it up if you really want his attention...
telltale
prepare for a barrage of patronising yet erotic sentiments
"aw, do you need some attention from daddy?"
"how about you come sit on my lap while i work"
"try not to distract me too much and i'll get you a treat later"
mission accomplished i guess, because he can't help himself

No, OMG! I'm so sorry if my ask came off this way. I was genuinely curious if there was any way this could work, hence the question. I used to believe it was Tommy who flew the plane, but once I saw your explanation, I actually subscribed to your view. It does seem more believable. I wish it was Tommy, but I think you're right, it wouldn't make much sense. I was just curious if Tim and the writers were to confirm in the future that it was indeed Tommy who flew that plane, whether it would be at least somewhat believable. That was the purpose of my ask. I didn't mean to disregard your theories. I'm sorry. I LOVE your aviation analyses; I even sent you a coffee from the Kinley cafe 🫣 I hope you don't stop. Whenever I see you posted something, I have this huge smile on my face because I know I'm about to read a banger of a post. It's all so interesting!
Noooo, it’s not you. I actually really appreciate your asks. And thank you for the Kinley Café order, you have no idea how happy it made me.
I don’t get asks often, but since the 8x02 title reveal I’ve gotten a few, all aviation related. I’ve been… honestly, elated. I have the chance to yap about my passion and do deep dives on stuff that never crossed my mind before. Sometimes I get carried away, I’m very much incapable of being normal about planes. Ever since I saw those planes in bts photos, my brain has been bustling with ideas, and at times I click rb/reply before thinking because I get too excited. I would worry later that I might’ve forced my theories on others without being asked about them. But it’s not like they’re harmful rhetorics or antagonistic hot takes, just an info dump about a lot of planes. So people can ignore and I’ll move on.
I especially enjoyed doing research on that C-130 in 2x14, I learned a lot about aerial firefighting in the process. I didn’t pay attention back then, but I noticed the lack of airplanes when Tommy was giving Buck the tour in 7x04, so I went back and found the line from the TV reporter saying it was CAL FIRE.
I suspect that line was shoved in there last minute, because some technical consultants told them firefighting air tankers are never used in an urban environment, the weight of water/fire retardant can flatten cars, houses, it has gotten multiple people killed. I can think of more instances where the emergency seems unrealistic at first, but then there’s a passing line making it kind of possible, just exaggerated. I know we always joke about Tim writing soap opera level surreal emergencies, but I feel like all the other people involved in the making of this show don’t get enough credit, especially those designing the opening big disasters.
I’ve noticed multiple times that shortly after posting stuff about Tommy’s pilot career, a post would pop up in the tag asking people to stop obsessing over timeline. I paid them no mind before, they were probably not personal I thought, a subsection of the fandom does have the habit to use Tommy’s age to call him a predator. But this time, well, my theory was mentioned by name, so they were talking about me.
I can handle bad takes or even attacks from the toxic part of the fandom, I don’t value their opinion at all. Seeing rb after rb from people on our side of the fandom, some of whom I admire, basically telling me to stop being so obsessive over realism, being compared to fans who nitpick certain actors’ accents, tattoos, grooming choices, that one stings harder than I thought.
I know I’m being thin-skinned, I’m making everything about me, I’m fully aware that I’m a disaster. But I find myself hesitating to answer the other aviation related asks in my inbox, one of them particularly asking about the possibility of certain scenario in real life. I’m just not sure my input is welcomed here. I have this fear of unknowingly annoying people with my over-enthusiasm. I feel like that kid who keeps yapping about trains at school that everyone secretly hates again.
I just really, really love aviation. I thoroughly enjoy uniting these 2 things that I love and maybe learn new things from it. I don’t mean to impose. I was very excited this morning when I received asks in my inbox, but now it feels like being slammed back onto the ground, and it’s not a good feeling. I don’t know, maybe it’s time to uncouple these 2 things.
#sorry for using your ask to vent#you caught me at a bad timing#but you did make me very happy for a while#ask answered#911 discourse#tommy kinard#bucktommy

I'm this close to being finished with Phase I and II and being completely ready to start Phase III, be proud of me! I finished three different anthology books and, to be honest, they're not my favorite, they're about the non-Jedi characters primarily, aside from Tales of Light and Life, which had a really good Bell Zettifar story and a really good Rooper Nitani story. Mostly I'm here for the Jedi, I know what I'm about, etc. (Oh, Life Day Treasury was a very quick read but it had a great Stellan story that I am sooooooo eager to pull details out because CORUSCANT HOLIDAY INFO it will be super useful for fic writers!) SOME BRIEF NON-SPOILERY REVIEWS: The Eye of Darkness: I'm about an hour into The Eye of Darkness and I'm already loving it, it feels like each book that starts off any give Phase is usually one of my favorites and Mann's writing can sometimes be a little soft for me, but I feel like this one is hitting pretty hard. There was an immediate banger section on the Jedi saying fear is a natural emotion, it's just one they have to learn to master, which I definitely raced to transcribe so I can shove it at everyone who will listen to me, so that bodes well.
Cataclysm: I enjoyed this one so much more than I thought I was going to and I think part of that is that Zoraida Cordova's writing focuses more on romance than I'm interested in. Her Black Spire book (the Batuu tie-in novel) was very focused on the main couple, Convergence was very focused on the Xiri/Phan-tu relationship and leaned heavily on the Axel/Gella flirting and she's a perfectly good writer! Just that her id doesn't match up with mine all that well. Meanwhile, Lydia Kang was writing all this crunchy stuff with Axel and his mother which oooooh that was much more my jam. The plot felt more hard-hitting and continued the characters' story arcs nicely, I felt like it really earn its punch. Honestly, this one felt like it packed more punch for me as an ending for Phase II almost, that's how much I liked the way it felt like it earned its ending with me.
The Edge of Balance: Precendent: I also read the latest manga volume and I think it's my favorite of the series because it felt like it really tied into everything that was happening both in the major battle on Dalna and while Starlight Beacon was falling. The previous volumes are prettier and Lily Tora-Asi is the best fleshed out character from the series, but this one had this tiny little grandma Jedi who was BADASS and I want her and Jocasta to meet up in the Force one day and sit around drinking tea and reminiscing about all the dumbass villains they kicked the ass of while being little old aunties. It also had some very solid backstory for a character that I know will show up in Phase III, making it feel more connected to the main plot, which I liked. It's a very quick read, but thoroughly satisfying, I highly recommend it if you're interested in the Phase II stuff. Which reminds me, I had a lovely question asked the other day, about how important the comics are to the story, or if it's fine to just read the novels? My answer: Bare minimum, you can totally get away with even just reading the adult novels. It won't be the full experience, but the context they give you will be enough to have a satisfying read, if that's what you're really into. And if you read just the adult novels + YA novels, you'll be really good. For me, I think the comics are fun, but almost all the Phase I comics are reasonably self-contained and are great additions (Keeve Trennis is a great character and I would recommend The High Republic 2021 series just for her), but aren't directly part of the story. You could probably even skip the audio drama Tempest Runner if you're going to stick to just the novels (it's the story of where Lourna Dee came from and what happens to her after she's caught, but I don't think I'd say it impacts the books' storyline much--it's very good! just not vital to the books' storyline imo), but that changes for me once getting into Phase II. All the Adventures comics have been really fun, but not vital to understanding the main story, they're sort of off doing their own thing that occasionally intersects with the books, so if you really don't like reading comics, you don't have to. But I do think The High Republic 2022 series (the Phase II one) is really helpful to getting a good feel for the battle that takes place on Jedha and for understanding a lot of the tensions and battles in the story. The audiodrama The Battle of Jedha is pretty vital to the main story as well imo. Basically, I would say you can skip most of the comics, except The High Republic 2022 and Shadows of Starlight and Edge of Balance: Precedent. The mini-series comics and anthology stories books are fun, the Adventures series are fun, they're really useful if you want to feel a sense of the world being fleshed out and giving a better sense of all those moving parts, plus they generally go pretty quickly, but if you're pressed for time or really don't like reading comics, those can be cut out. I would personally recommend reading them, but I'm trying to be objective about how much time anyone has to devote to a project like this. I can't speak to much about Phase III, but Shadows of Starlight felt pretty important (maybe not vital, but important) to doing connective tissue work, Tales of Light and Life is important for learning the fate of some of the characters post-Phase I, but as always, this is just one person's opinions and is trying to make this as easy for people as I can. (Seriously, don't be afraid to read things out of order, I've been doing a ton of that and it's pretty easy to keep track of what goes where. As long as you generally read in order of the novels' progress, you shouldn't have any problems.) How's everyone else's progress on Star Wars stuff going?

13th review in series of Dragon Age Veilguard
98 steam hours logged, 84 game hours logged on final save, (the listing in the game itself) actual gameplay hours (-2 for time in CC) either 96 or 82... depending.
14 hour discrepancy between game logged hours and steam logged hours is likely how much trouble the game gave me in loading, reloading, glitching, and crashing. Do I get to charge Bioware for those lost hours of my life?
Obligatory disclaimer, feel free to skip it if you've read it.
Something came to my attention. I need to make it crystal clear that I utterly love the diversity in DAV. It's fantastic. I'm also a heavily left leaning, non-binary, queer as fuck reviewer, editor, and author.
I'm on media blackout while I play this, so I'm only getting second-hand info on how awful it is right now in the DA Fandom. Please be safe and take care of yourselves. Arguing with incels and white supremacists is completely pointless. They sea lion worse than an actual sea lion. Your mental health is important.
Though., every single time the anti-queer brigade comes out for a new DA game, I sit there thinking 'have you bozos ever played any DA game, like, ever?' My guess is nope.
Spoilers for Dragon Age Veilguard and everything else DA, I'm a Lore fiend.
My pithy pre-end sequence commentary.
Section 12 here.
END GAME SPOILERS
End game spoilers for BG3 too.
13 is my lucky number, but even that couldn't save it. I can't think of a single thing that can save this disaster of a game. I'll write a more professional wrap-up review post too, this is my reaction portion.
I've finished the final sequence of the game. Sat through the credits of probably a thousand people who worked on this piece of shit and still thought it releasable. AND saw the 'easter egg/future game possibility scene'. My kid said I got a hint of hope back in my eyes for about 10 seconds when that final scene popped up then the light faded again. Apparently the 'long slow horrified stare of death' was all over my face again.
Loading in, I dreaded everything I was about to see. Veilguard had already disappointed me in so many ways. I didn't have any hope the final sequence would be any better.
It wasn't as bad as I expected. It was worse. Yes. Honestly.
In all fairness (even if I really don't want to be fair right now) the last sequence does contain some of the best material in the game. If they'd actually written the rest of it with that kind of passion it probably would've been a better game. But that doesn't actually make it good. And how any average person makes it to the final sequence is beyond me. I'm stuck in bed. I've got an excuse.
So. I expected it to be long. That part didn't bother me that much. Most Dragon Age games have long final sequences.
The positive! Ummmm? Oh! I actually did get an intimate scene with Lucanis. His timing stinks but whatever. I did actually get one. I mean, it was one your aunt who's a nun probably wouldn't have found racey, but it exists! Dude. It's 2024, there's this cool toggle function you can click off if you don’t want nudity. It's a Mature rated game and I'm pretty sure most of us know what sex is. Give paying customers what they want!
My least favourite character died.
I called it on Solas killing Varric in the first scene. Interesting twist they did with that, though. Told y'all. I didn't want it to happen either, but the writing was on the wall in great big letters in drippy red paint from the second they fired Mary Kirby (Varric's writer.) In case you want more details than snark on that? Varric did indeed die when Solas stabbed him in the beginning. What you see throughout the game is Solas messing with Rook's mind because Solas needs Rook to work with him. Varric died before the story actually started. That last line of his 'take care of the team' told me. But I got taken in by the twist too. Bet that was a Weekes twist. 'It’s right in front of you the whole time.'
Elgar'nan made a WAY better final boss fight than Coryphyfish.
I did legitimately love watching Teia and Viago fight as crows. That was a really awesome section. (They're two of my favourite characters from Tevinter Nights.)
The bad.
There is no way for me to list it all. So here's the highlight reel.
Varric died.
They lifted almost the entire final battle sequence from BG3. The tentacle they have to climb to the fancy building in the sky. People falling and almost dying by tumbling down the tentacle, having to fight through said self-destructing fancy building in the sky... I know you can't copyright an idea. As an author, I understand and approve of that. But you should at least make the idea a wee bit unrecognizable as to where you lifted it from. Y'know?
Yay! We got to see Solas in wolfie form! He looks like a Chinese hairless crested dog on a really bad day. Like... really needs to go to the salon and have a bath day. I really wish I were joking.
Called it on the Solavellan ending. And NO. Trick Weekes. That DOES NOT give a suggestion of a Happy Fucking Ending. Read some fucking Romance. GOOD romance. (They do. And I'm being very mature by not calling out one of the authors they read who was one of the ones who harassed me off of Twitter. Oh. No. Two of them I've seen Trick mention as books they've read were involved in that. I guess looking at the people someone likes and respects is kinda indicative... isn't it?)
What's that say about me? I don't like very many people. I get along with people as best as my autistic/AuDHD ass can but I don't LIKE very many people at all. Nor do people tend to like me. I have no compunction about calling someone on bullshit. It makes people cranky, but I've had enough bullshit in my life. And I respect about the same amount of people as I like. If I can't respect you? I can't like you. (For anyone who does actually know me... I don't mean you. If I talk with you privately? Or even if I'm willing to? I both like and respect you. Or I wouldn't bother talking to you privately. I'm shit at reaching out. But if we've talked more than once in any form of privacy? You've made the list of my cranky ass.)
Am I a bitch? Probably. Live my life and see if you'd be any different.
No intimate scene for Solas and Inky. After ten years of waiting for Solavellans. After all the shitting on Solas we had to put up with in DAV (and OMFG there was soooo much!!) No actual happy ending. No intimate scene. Oh, but you do get a rather grody kiss between them because he's just been fighting and has blight all over his face. But yay? They get to kiss? With absolutely no passion at all. Maybe the passion of a bavarian cream pastry? A rotten one? Ew. Before dissolving into fade gook.
The entire time I spent in CC for my Inky to make her look like my player character from DAI? It didn't show up in the final sequence. And no way was I replaying that hellscape to see if it MIGHT could be coaxed into actually showing her the way I made her. I just got the stock body.
So... y'know the veil? That edge of reality that has been getting more and more holes in it throughout the entire history of the Dragon Age Franchise? The veil that the Lore has been pretty clear about it strangling both the magic and the life out of THEDAS? Not to mention everything the elves lost because of it? That veil?
It's all better now. Regardless of the Lore. Because Solas bound his life force to it. So instead of a quick bandage being pulled off to get rid of the veil that really does need to go (y'know if Bioware writers actually gave a rat's ass about the fucking lore of the world they're writing in)... Now it's there until Solas dies... which he can't really do easily being one of the first Elves. Sooooo by the very lore of the world they've crafted... THEDAS is now doomed to die.
Congrats Bioware. Well done. /s
Oh, but THAT doesn't matter. Because everything from the very beginning of DAO has been 'influenced' by 'the ones from across the sea'.
Pardon me while I gag.
The entirety of THEDAS and everything that's ever gone wrong with it is the fault of 'the foreigners from across the sea who wear clothing that's kiiiinda a lot like a Burqa.' Y'know... the black over gowns and veils Afghani women and some other Muslim folks wear?
Cause... uh... yeah. That's a GREAT idea. I legitimately cannot believe they went there. I just... I can't. Bioware hasn't ever really been great on the racism front but I'd hoped they'd gotten at least a little bit better.
Nooooope.
There were a couple of mentions of something like 'the gathering storm' in Taash's quests and how she's a weapon against them. HUGE spoiler I'm sure, but I'm pretty sure they want to make a game that deals with 'the foreign invaders who have been subtly influencing everything wearing black burqas and veils' as the next Dragon Age. Or maybe they'll call it a spin off since it has to be getting close to the end of the actual Dragon Age in the calendar.
I really hope I'm not the only one who can see the issues there. Not that I expect Bioware to. Honestly? I used to pray that DAV would save Bioware. I've liked them as a company for a while, but this is it for me. I'm done.
I might enjoy the first three DA games occasionally if I feel like it. But DAV does not exist for me. Anything they make going forward does not exist for me. That fucking bullshit about no one having had any free choices in the entire history of the games/books/comics etc.? AND the next game's bad guys looking like they wear burqas?
Bioware has made my boycott list. And I honestly hope they sink like the fucking Titanic for the shit they've pulled in DAV and that last fucking scene.
With that scene, they not only shit on many cultures who veil, they shit specifically on Afghani people who are required to wear that. Whether they want to or not.
They also, from a writing perspective, removed every single bit of agency from any of their previous characters. Making every single game pointless in the history of the world.
I'm just done. My boycott list is pretty long. I have these pesky standards. I'd already compromised them by continuing on with playing Bioware games regardless of their well known issues. But nope. Done. Finite. Time to cut the rope and watch it sink.
I would never, in a million years, recommend this game. On those two reasons alone. But also because it doesn't do anything a good CRPG (Computer Role Playing Game) is supposed to do very well.
It doesn't hold up the Dragon Age expectations for anyone who has played the games or enjoyed the lore. They basically shoved all the lore under the proverbial carpet. (Must have made a hell of a lump. That's a LOT of Lore. Trust me. I know. I've marinated myself in it.) On the surface it LOOKS like a CRPG. It has the elements of one... but so few of the elements are carried through that it's kinda shocking to me that they dared to advertise it as one. I mean... didn't someone tell them pissing off people by advertising something they aren't delivering is a bad idea?
It's full of easily fixable plot holes. Seriously, they'd be so easy to fix! They just didn't bother.
Where DAI was an intricately woven adult CRPG masterpiece? DAV is a poorly woven bedsheet with arm sized holes in it and lots and lots of stains. Made for kids.
CRPGs have a long history. Bioware and Dragon Age do too. DAO came out in 2009, Dragon Age 2 released in 2011, both were solid CRPGs. You felt like you were playing a role playing game. Bioware then released DAI in 2014. And in the Dragon Age series, DAI is the crown jewel.
It had everything a CRPG is supposed to have. It wasn’t perfect, no, but it's definitely the best of all 4 games for being what it's supposed to be.
CRPGs generally do not challenge the player as far as manual dexterity or physical response time. That's for action/fighting games. I'm not a professional level gamer. But gaming is my number one hobby and source of entertainment. I play on hard level for most games I play, if not ultra hard. I struggled with the shitty DAV fighting system. Dear gods, who had the brilliant idea of tying accumulation of skill points to how high your bond is with your companions? That's just... the kindest thing I can say is poorly thought out. Especially when you can only take two of them with you on missions. My not-a-fucking-rogue should never have had aggro. And they always did. I'm intimately acquainted with the inside the mouth animations on the dragons.
RPGs are supposed to have intricate, layered world building, a levelling system that makes your characters grow and develop as they progress through a well developed world, often they have fighting, puzzles, and other mechanics to spice things up. But there's some very specific things an RPG needs. And DAV has so few of them. They focussed so much on that shitty gods damned fighting system that had my not-a-fucking-rogue always plastered with the 'come eat me' aggro flag that they failed to deliver on so much else that an RPG needs to have. Especially a CRPG.
I think I heard someone on the dev team say they were quite happy with how the characters and romances came out and um. Well. Might I politely suggest learning how to write better? Cause they weren't. From both a professional and consumer level? They just weren't good.
The characters were dishwater boring with no character development possible. The romances were... not. I'll just leave it there.
Those are a few things I KNOW I'm good at. Just because my fans have told me often enough that I've almost internalized it by now. What? Characterization, writing intimate scenes, and writing romance. My writing voice is very love/hate like many authors. If you love my voice and read kinky romance, you'd probably like it. If you don't like my voice? No story I tell will satisfy you. But from an editorial and writing standpoint? The characters and romances in DAV needed so much work. As much as the plot.
I'm no stranger to trauma. And yes. I did it to myself. I needed to play the ending for myself and I wanted to see what the game was like. I feel traumatized. Abso-fucking-lutely traumatized.
If you're Solavellan and looking for reviews to tell you whether it's worth buying and playing? It. Is. Not. On any level.
Oh and you know those Steam Achievements you get? At the beginning they were like in the high 90s and 80s percentages. The last two I got were from the end game. 2.2% and 6.8%. Respectively. According to my kid (who usually knows more than I do about things like that) that means people stopped playing before they got there. (Or possibly just haven't gotten there yet. I did play it reasonably fast because of my current circumstances.)
I really wish I could say better things about this game. I wanted to love it as much as I loved the other three. As much as I've loved most Dragon Age material. Something about it just captured me. Until DAV.
More professional review to follow at some point.
If my review series has been helpful... and I really really hate to ask, but if it has been? My work of words is my family's only income. My partner is still recovering from a broken back, and I'm recovering from a pulmonary embolism. Money is so tight it squeaks. If you're not gonna buy the game anyway after reading my blather, a tip would surely be appreciated.
All my links are at the bottom of my website. And the tips button up top is set up too.
My response to breaking media blackout.

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by @the-real-azalea-scroggs! Had to wait until I was of my phone because doing these is a nightmare on mobile lmao
1. How many works do you have on A03?
18 as of a few days ago!
2. What's your total A03 word count?
157,937! Which is. Only a fraction of the word count in my Docs folder. Be prepared.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I mainly write for The Legend of Zelda; specifically Linked Universe! In fact, that's all that's posted on my Ao3 currently, since my fall into that fandom began with me uploading there! Pre-Ao3 I wrote for Black Cat (Anime/Manga), Megaman NT Warrior, various Pokémon things, Assassin's Creed, Yugioh, Final Fantasy XIV and Octopath Traveler! Some of these I still write privately, but I haven't gotten around to re-posting any.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Whistling on Deaf Ears - My longest fic on Ao3, focusing on Wild and Twilight's friendship and how good intentions can lead to disaster.
Iconoclasm - Warriors deals with the room full of portraits in Cia's palace. The Chain also deals with it, but with a bit more fire.
Deserving - Twilight finally tells Rusl that he was the wolf in the village during TP, but that also means dealing with some heavier topics. Colin half overhears them and forms his own conclusions.
Something Greater - The start of the "Hyrule can see magical auras" series! In this one we deal with Legend and his many rings.
Ocean Magic - Mermaid Legend and Zora Time have a race and then fight one of the Big Octos from WW! Fun times.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Every single one!! I love comments, they give me an excuse to ramble about my fic more!! I am always down to ramble about every single insignificant detail of any line and/or section. If you ever want more background info about one of my fics, look to the comments!
So please, I adore comments, I treat them like treasures, not responding to them would be a CRIME.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
There's no contest; Inevitable, my (so far) only MCD fic.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmmm, that's hard to quantify. I usually try to end fics on a hopeful note regardless. I'd say possibly either Deserving, where Twilight reconnects with his family, or Shimmering Blue, Striking White, where Time meets the Fierce Deity settled down on Satori Mountain and they both get closure.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully, no! I've been blessed with mostly amazing and patient readers, even when my upload schedule isn't the best.
9. Do you write smut?
No, not really. I've attempted it, but I'm too asexual for it lol
10. Do you write crossovers?
Very, very rarely. Mostly privately, and only very specific ones. Only a single one has had an actual plot, so far (more on that one in question 15!).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Also a nope! I tend to write for smaller fandoms, where these things don't tend to happen a lot!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have! But it's been a while. Over a decade, in fact! I tried to find the fic to link it here, but it was on the German fanfic website fanfiktion.de, and my friend who posted it back then must have deactivated her account, because it's nowhere to be seen (I still have the Word file though!). It was a Multi-Crossover that started as an RP in a forum, and we took turns turning the RP into prose one chapter each. "If a Hero Turns to Dark" was its title. We were edgy teenagers.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Hissssss. Bad question. Shoo. They are all equally important!!
But it's probably TenRose from Doctor Who.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
One of the very few crossovers I've ever worked on; a crossover fic between Assassin's Creed and Doctor Who, that I have mapped out in both chronological and timeline order, and yes, those are different. I only ever wrote about a quarter of it, since my primary audience of it disappeared when we graduated. I doubt I'll ever pick it back up properly, and if I do it'll probably go through heavy rewrites first since it's so old. Finishing it is a nice thought, but realistically, after 9 years it'll never be high priority enough for it to actually happen.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, especially arguments, and emotional impact. I've been told I do really well making characters feel alive and believable! Also I like to believe I'm decent at setting a scene and giving it the vibe I want it to have!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I struggle with dialogue tags when nothing much is happening besides the talking. I always feel it's too bland, and fall back on the same phrases. My scene transitions could use some work too.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've done this with Japanese phrases, because I was a massive weeb. Usually I followed them up with their own translations, though; I'm not the biggest fan of footnote translations, unless they are properly linked to. Simple dialogue tags are my favourite way of indicating a language switch.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Black Cat the Manga/Anime! It's a series about an assassin turned bounty hunter trying to live a life separate from his murdery past, but getting dragged back into things by still wanting to avenge his best friend's death. The series has a special place in my heart and my bookshelf, it left an imprint on 13-year-old me that will never leave.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Probably Jailbreak, uncharacteristically enough! It's one of the only fics I never got stuck in once. Writing it was a great feeling from start to finish. I love writing all of my fics, but that was a special few days.
Tagging @ahrva @nowhere-to-go-but-down @silvercaptain24 and @aeghina! And anyone who wants to do it, really, go wild
#rav rambles#rav writes#ask game#linked universe#thank you Aza I rambled a lot lmao#rambling is cathartic sometimes#I had a good time!

tgcf=bad writing (based on that reblog THIS ISNT HATE IM JUST GENUINELY CURIOUS I REALLY LOVE U)
Allow me to elaborate! It's my favorite book so I say this with all the love in my heart for the story and characters, but--
She needed an editor: there are large sections of the book that could have been cut without changing the plot. Like Hua Cheng trying on different outfits during the Brocade Immortal arc... I know fans like this scene, but it's obvious word-padding that doesn't contribute to the story or even contribute anything significant to Hualian's relationship development. See also the endless chapters leading up to Mount Tonglu. Bloated cast and characters not contributing anything significant (why were Banyue and Pei Xiu there except to address the fact that MXTX forgot about them after book 1???) and honestly, there's a lot of boring filler around this point in the novel. Reduce and cut.
Another thing that needed editing: loose ends not being tied up. The Brocade Immortal arc is a disaster, difficult to follow, and has no lasting impact besides Ling Wen being in jail for maybe two pages. It's never explained who created Cuocuo and why and Mu Qing's involvement is handwaved even though his explanation doesn't make sense. Xie Lian puts Banyue in a jar and forgets about her for an entire arc.
The descriptions are severely lacking compared to other danmei novels. I'm not a fan of 2ha but I'm reading it anyway because I love the way the author describes the scenery, the food, the clothes, the architecture... Thousand Autumns also has some of the most beautiful passages describing the cultivation techniques. I'm sure some of this has to do with the translation teams, but TGCF also doesn't really give much to work with? The descriptions of the Ghost City are good, but the rest of the book is just kind of like. "Xie Lian was in a room. He looked around and there was a table." versus other writers who are giving us sentences like "The celadon tea set gave an aroma of jasmine where it sat on top of the mahogany table and when he picked up the teacup, it was cool against his palm." Good descriptive writing engages five senses and I don't feel that TGCF does that successfully. What do we know about heaven except that the palaces are golden?
Anyway, what she does do successfully is making an interesting world with memorable characters, even if most of them don't get the attention they deserve, and she's great with dialogue and humor. Plus the romance is good; it's not rushed and it's believable that Hualian like each other (which you'd think would be a given in romance novels, but some of the ones I've been reading lately don't bother to establish that lmao).
tldr version: too many words that aren't giving us the right info :,I
#anonymous#i love tgcf i really really do but it is a flawed child#my criticisms would decrease by 50% if she gave fx a backstory#jk but like. it's symptomatic of bigger problems yknow?

I'm going to rant about why Haumea doesn't work for me as a character.
Was Haumea's trauma ever actually foreshadowed before the last arc decided to make her the tragic victim that needed to be saved?
Or were we to read that given how obviously unwell she was (and simultaneously ignore how awful she was to other people, including whatever she was doing making Sho into her new dollie)?
Or was it not foreshadowed and just a drastic shifting of gears because the writer had no idea what he was doing?
Or is it that she does bad things and it is presented as bad, but we need to recognize that no one is wholly good or evil and that people in pain deserve to be helped regardless of what they did before?
Is she the Crona of this story? Because, for good or bad, I can overlook what Crona did when the story clearly communicates that they are part of a cycle of violence, whereas with Haumea, the late back story does not recontextualize anything when the horror of what she was doing to others was the first impression and not only never wore off but is still used in current promotional materials (the mobile app game just reinforcing her sexualized violence upon Arrow).
In other words, the story barely made it clear that Haumea was just "driven insane" and that's why she does what she does--which doesn't work: her being in tune with humanity's darkest thoughts does not seem to separate her from her own agency, as so much of the story presents her actions as out of a choice and agency, not even a choice within the limited options given to her.
I wish the story had emphasized some detail that clearly delineated that we are supposed to root for her recovery; even Shigaraki in My Hero Academia was a villain that the story was trying to make you root for being rescued, even if the cliches of reducing him to his child form as Tenko may be cliche or overlook, again, his own agency in the choices he made.
Instead, Haumea's conclusion just seems slap-dash and doesn't clearly telegraph an ending that says everyone deserves to be saved regardless what we may think of them. Would it have helped to info-dump all of Haumea's back story in the middle of the manga similar to how Tenko is info-dumped in the middle of My Hero Academia? I don't know.
Fire Force kept acting like this was a story about saving lives and property, and that firefighters don't see anyone as undeserving of rescuing...Too bad it also has Shinra and company resurrect even mass killers and ends up creating monsters and natural disaster then treats this as, "Oh, well, the world's more exciting like this."
Like, sorry for conflating people who deserve the chance to change with mindless monsters and destructive forces of nature, but the story never seemed to have the depth it was trying to telegraph in its ending.
This isn't even a problem of shonen as a demographic or this story as an action-adventure genre: it's setting up a question--"Does everyone deserve to be saved?"--and instead of answering with a resounding and obviously correct answer of "Yes!" instead overlooks what Haumea did, what Kurono and others did, and says to just have fun and not think about this because the world is now a zany cartoon known as Soul Eater (which, as I was trying to emphasize, did this entire plot better with Crona--a character who themselves didn't even apologize for their actions but at least said they had a connection to Maka and wanted to do what was right for her if for no one else).
And, just going to throw this out there: it's bothersome that Fire Force has an ending that acts like everyone, regardless of how wicked they were, deserves to be resurrected...while Crona (a victim of abuse who still did commit atrocities) gets to stay imprisoned on the Moon, Medusa is still dead, and Arachne is still dead. I would not be so insistent on this point because, hey, two different works by the same author doesn't mean that they have to be consistent just because it's the same creator. But when you then force the two stories into the same chronology and are trying to connect their morals--that the lessons learned in Fire Force created the world for Maka to learn her lessons--but those morals do not match up, then yes, I am going to criticize all of this as tonally inconsistent and having competing mutually exclusive morals.
Maybe so much of this would help if there was ever any sense of just how much agency Haumea had. The bread crumbs were not enough: she witnesses the Evangelist holding baby Sho, but she was the one who kidnapped him; she is suffering from the images of humanity's worst impulses, but we don't see resistance by her even when she seemingly gleefully is participating out of pleasure in harming Arrow and Sho, not to stave off the pain from those impulses or even to distract from that pain but just because she seems to really want to do it. Maybe I'm obtuse and need the story to hammer whether she really wanted to do this, or whether she changed her mind over the course of the story, and either case would require the story to actually let us into her mind--and by the time we get there, she has done enough that is too gross to think, "Oh, okay, now I get it." I can accept "she needs to be saved"; I can't accept "and you should agree that this doesn't still suck, doing the right thing."
Also: maybe if she wasn't given reality-altering powers at the end this all would have worked better. I understand that Crona having the power of madness and needing to be talked down means that they are still not being treated as a person to reach out to but as a force of nature that has to be stopped; I appreciate how that is a mixed message. But the thing is, I think most people like Crona, however much unfair derision will be made that we like them just because they are a "woobie." But with Haumea, the entire attempt by Shinra never felt like reaching out to Haumea as a person but just to convince her to go along with his plan to remake the world--that's it, a means to an end, a force of nature that is out of control and needs to be managed. And it makes Shinra resurrecting Charon seem less as a way to help Haumea continue to live and, again, just a bribe, an enticement like getting a kid to do their chores--it's condescending.
I guess to wrap up this rambling, Haumea never felt like much of a character, just "the antagonist" until the story needed sympathy for the devil to jerk out some tears from the audience that are not earned. I know all literature is just artificial constructions meant to imitate reality without ever entirely reaching reality and instead opting for just believability--but, damn it, this is not believable, and when the stitches in the plot are showing this obviously, the story is not working and comes across as a bunch of tropes stapled and taped together so badly that the staple and the tape are obscuring what I can see in the story.

I just saw that Ahmed Alkhatib is speaking at a synagogue in Berkeley on Friday?! He's my fourth- or fifth-favorite Palestinian activist!! He's speaking with an expert on Palestinian trauma! I have zero idea what they're going to talk about beyond that!
This is what he says is his "platform," which is so long I'm gonna paste it into a reblog:
AND FOR THE CURIOUS, YOU CAN ZOOM IN AT 8 PM ON FRIDAY WITHOUT EVEN RSVPing: https://zoom.us/j/8781040
He has had a LOT of trouble connecting with the Pro-Palestine movement and finding people who'll listen to him, much less who will center and support his work as an activist from Gaza.
So share this with all your pro-Palestinian friends!
I WOULD just assume it's like... a general talk about All The Shit. But I heard this week that a coalition of Gazan activists has been working on a plan for self-rule in Gaza.
I don't know if he's involved in that; I'm behind on all this. They're not in the same activist circles, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. But obviously it makes me curious about whether that will come up.
(OK, I know you want to know the top 5. It currently goes: Hamza Howidy at the top with a big gold star for pieces like this:
Then Bassem Eid; Moumen al-Natour; Mo Ghaoui; Ahmed Alkhatib. Those are all very close rankings that shift all the time. Even now, I'm mentally flipping 4 and 5 back and forth. And 2 and 3.
The Center for Peace Communications deserves a mention too. It's based in NYC, but it's devoted to giving the people of Gaza a way for their voices to safely be heard.)
This is what the synagogue event page says:
Potluck oneg after services, followed by HeartSpace at 8pm, featuring a discussion and Q+A with Palestinian political analyst Ahmed Alkhatib and Palestinian trauma expert Dr. Niveen Rizkalla.
As we approach the one-year anniversary of the deadly Hamas attacks on October 7 and grapple with the ongoing violence and devastation in Israel-Palestine, join us in our efforts to hold multiple perspectives with nuance and complexity, part of our ongoing HeartSpace series showcasing diverse voices from the region.
Ahmed Alkhatib is a nonresident senior fellow with the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs. He is also an American writer and analyst who grew up in Gaza City, having left in 2005 as a teenage exchange student to the United States.
He writes extensively on Gaza’s political and humanitarian affairs and has been an outspoken critic of Hamas and a promoter of coexistence and peace as the only path forward between Palestinians and Israelis.
Alkhatib has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in intelligence and national security studies. His writing has been published in US and Israeli outlets, and his opinions and comments have been featured in international press. Click here for more information and to support Ahmed’s peacebuilding efforts"
Dr. Niveen Rizkalla is a postdoctoral research fellow at UC Berkeley’s Mack Center for Mental Health and Social Conflict. She specializes in research related to trauma, including PTSD, vicarious and secondary traumatization, victims of torture and war, and gender-based violence. She is also working on the mental health of Syrian refugees and the staff who assist them.
Her most recent project delves into the physical and mental health of aid workers who assist traumatized populations (refugees, conflict, and natural disasters) in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

regarding asuka ren's inclusion in TWSA...
ORV FULL NOVEL SPOILERS BELOW CUT:
it's interesting to think about hsy's relationship to the peace land manga and to asuka ren as a creator. considering that the manga existed prior to TSWA and was included in the work because hsy emailed asuka ren to ask for permission to use peace land's setting in TSWA, it's clear that hsy must have had strong feelings on the work.
peace land: a small planet, full of ordinary, unexceptional people, which was only given an exceptional hero to sell better, and even then the manga failed. a story written by a small, unsuccessful mangaka who nonetheless cared deeply about her small planet and small people. there was something in that passion, that unpopular depiction of unexceptional fantasy, that clearly spoke to han sooyoung. it affected her enough that asuka ren herself became a character in the story of TSWA.
my guess is that han sooyoung doesn't actually know much about asuka ren as a person. manga authorship, especially for unsuccessful mangakas, is rather anonymous, and a whole damn theme in orv is how it's nearly impossible to truly, fully know another human being, no matter how much info you DO have. which makes it veryyyyy interesting to think about asuka ren as a TSWA and ORV character. the only real conclusion that can be drawn there is that hsy, as a writer, is projecting Highly onto this idea of this passionate but unsuccessful writer.
and the way she writes tswa... the world of the scenarios is literally an apocalypse onto peace land. these high-stakes scenarios, which in another iteration (SSSSS-grade regressor) were a feature of a highly successful novel, crush the small and peaceful and unsuccessful story. everything that defined peace land is trampled under the feet of the disasters. it's unclear whether even kyrgios rodgraim, the hero created to make peace land more successful, can do much to protect that world.
asuka ren is depicted as knowledgeable, but insecure. she cares deeply for her creation, but cannot protect the story and land she created and loves. someone who betrayed her own artistic vision by including a more "mass produced" element into her work and subsequently feeling guity. is this how hsy sees herself as well? or is it just a concept she can relate to, as someone who is powerlessly trapped in the body of a teenager, writing an unsuccessful novel she knows will damn the world to apocalypse? someone who will/has (time shenanigans) written a mass produced novel herself?
and yet... tswa does treat this as a tragedy. it's clear that, from the way that kdj reacts to information the novel is said to describe, that it is also possible to protect peace land. the apocalypse always comes to this small planet. but yoo joonghyuk protects it. only in some time loop iterations, and I'm sure that there are times that he doesn't or can't do it. but it's canonically the best path to pass the scenario, which... well, hsy wrote that! she wrote that the best path forward was not to crush this world loved by its creator, but to defend it! and to learn from it.
the love put into peace land was not wasted. peace land is worth defending. han sooyoung, writing her novel for her singular audience, cared enough to communicate that message to the people she wanted to save. because she read that story. because she cared about that passion. even an unloved story can have people who are deeply affected by it, even if it's just one person, because if that one person is saved by a story...
then that story is written for that one reader.
#nic's great orv reread#FUCK. ORV. EXPLODES EXPLODES EXPLODES#EDIT. ADDED STUFF REGARDING KYRGIOS RODGRAIM BECAUSE I FORGOR ABOUT HOW ASUKA REN FELT ABOUT HIM

This is another pandemic post and this one I am tagging and asking for reblogs, to try to find two specific things, so I will adapt an old trend from the website formerly known as Twitter and add a piece of REBLOG BAIT at the end of it.
With the live show approaching in two weeks, I wish there was a compilation of travel safety and risk reduction resources for people going to the show, since up-to-date versions of those things are not easy to find because public health authorities' response to the pandemic has, as I think we all know by now, been a trashfire.
As anyone who has worked on a group project ever in their life can attest, even a one-page info sheet (much less my moonshot version which is a spreadsheet with pages for travel and masking in cosplay and so forth) has far more moving parts than anticipated. (Who's proofreading? Who's writing a "not affiliated with critrole the company" disclaimer that is legal and ethical? If there's only one person with the background for a given technical piece of it then who's checking their work?)
I think that since it is a Safety Thing, it would be better not to create a sheet than to do it badly. But the Critical Role fandom is hugelarge, and I think if enough people reblog this it might find enough engineers, writers, immunocompromised people who have had to learn everything about how respirators work, scicomm people, parents of high-risk kids, philosophy guys, bioethics wonks, &c with 1-3 hours free this week.
Because the fandom IS so immense and the pandemic is surging again, I think it's likely someone somewhere is already doing something like this! I was really hoping someone would, but if so, I haven't found it yet. I don't want to reduplicate efforts, so the other reason I'm asking for reblogs is in the hope that if I can't find it, it will find this.
Q: You have clearly thought through everything that could go wrong with this, so why do it?
A: I think if enough people can work on an info sheet to make a safe and informative one, and a few hundred people see that info sheet, then a few dozen people will end up with resources to protect themselves and their loved ones, and I think that matters.
I think watching the live show approach has been an isolating time for people in the fandom who are medically vulnerable and whose lives have been touched by pandemic death, and I think it would do a lot of us good to be able to talk about it and try to do something to help reduce the rate of illness. While helping with physical safety generally > helping with social and psychological safety, to anyone whose first retort is "is this about emooootions," yes lmao it is absolutely is.
Q: From a bioethics standpoint, doesn't creating a resource to help people manage their individual risk (and that to their immediate social circle) do damage in and of itself by affirming the idea that a public health disaster can be solved on an individual level?
A: Hypothetical question asker, it's like I literally wrote your question myself! Anyway idk the answer to this but I think talking about whether to do something to help is a step up from not talking about it at all.
REBLOG BAIT:
#critical role#cr2#i don't have a witty comment for the tags i used up the last of my brain making the lame meme#cr live show and pandemic
