chara!!

there are over 200 species of chara, and I don't know which one this is, but I collected it personally from Schenley Pond in Pittsburgh, PA. it grows in strands up to ??? feet long. (I have pulled two and three foot long strands out of this tank. it just keeps coming.)

chara is a very tough plant that sort of looks like pipecleaners. it's actually a macroalgae, so it doesn't really have differentiated roots or leaves. if you clip off a little bit of it and plop it in a jar in sunlight with a little dirt of any kind, you'll have a full jar of chara pretty fast. I have had incidents of various kinds with my jarrariums and I can tell you from those experiences that chara can survive basically anything.

shrimp love chara and use its fronds like little ladders, but chara is Not Compatible With Fish because the fronds are actually kind of spiky -- they have a thin limestone coating, which doesn't feel very hard to us, but they sort of "crunch" if you grab a strand, and they're hard enough to shred fishes' fins into ribbons.

set up this tiny 30l (7.9gal) indoor pond today :}

made from my grandma's rain water tub

put this whole thing together literally for free lol

wood is homegrown grape vines🍇🌱

also added oak leaves cuz my leaf stash is frankly way too big🍂🍁

for now it only has duckweed(temporarily, i'll replace it with frogbit once i get some🐸) & moss, but i'll add some more plants later🌿

plan on stocking it with shrimp, snails, & some type of livebearers 🦐🐌🐟

so i saw one of my favorite actors interviewed at an online fan convention today and he has the most gorgeous, perfect nose, and I can't talk about it anywhere but to y'all.

it's like. in profile it's long and has a lovely swoop to it, and little nostrils with nice ridges, and from the front it's nice and round in a way the lighting in his room emphasized, and. i mean the interview was good. but i did get distracted there at the beginning

It’s kinda funny, during 2021 I was really into NBA rpf and one author (yekoc) was writing some brilliant fics so I kept following the trajectory of their work, and after a little while they slowly started dedicating more fics to F1 rpf. And I remember at the time I was like “damn we lost a good soldier” because I didn’t know shit about F1 and I was like who tf is Daniel Ricciardo… sounds like an uggo (I was mad I wasn’t getting fed bottom!Jayson Tatum). Fast forward to 2023, I get a tiktok of Charles hunting thiefs down with a Ferrari and I’m like hold up what’s all this then. I don’t remember when Daniel first appeared after that but once I saw him I was hooked. I actually haven’t even watched DTS, so I was just rawdogging my way into the F1 fandom. Beyond obviously being attractive and funny and joyful, he just seemed so endearing narratively. Does that make sense? Like just a kid from Perth that leaves everything behind, and the first time he meets Helmut Marko his shoes are squelching cuz he stepped in a pond. He was so very underdog coded and I’m a sucker for highs and lows and grief and redemption. He’s never flat with his actions, one thing he’ll do is make me feel and feel deeply. I never really got to witness him on podiums so I really am looking forward to it - I guess hope grounded in trust and belief is sustaining me.

I forget what this plant is - some kind of pennywort I got from my partner who got it from the internet - but it's been growing in this jar for 5ish years now, and it seems to be winning in the long run. (there were two of these sprigs for a while, then they dried up, then it grew three. so presumably next year there will be four.)

as you can see, it's mostly vallisneria at this point...I used to have some interesting red-leaf plants as well as susswassertang and chara, but the vallisneria took over almost completely, except for the plant above which I guess can poke out above it. (the above plant's main root is the thick green stalk running along the bottom).

Been struggling with thrips. I have a small apartment and can't really isolate plants and the thrips are basically everywhere and I just feel ugh about the whole things. I have really been neglecting my plants and I just don't feel really into it.

Then my aquarium just... yeah I don't really know what happen but it just became goo and I moved my fish to a bucket on the floor (65L so big bucket) where I store some of my waterlilies over the winter and I kind of like the indoor pond feeling and might do that fulltime. It's not very pretty though.
