thinking about "you have a life" / "i don't know what i have" + "what do you want, dana?" / "i want everything that i should want at this time of my life" + the perceived shame in scully's loss of normalcy... "unlike you, mulder, i would like to have a life" + "do you believe in the afterlife?" / "i'd settle for a life in this one" + "don't you ever want to just stop? get out of the damn car? settle down and live something approaching a normal life?"
her friend ellen saying, "well, first you have to get a life." tara, pregnant with their christmas gift, saying that life before one grew inside her was "somehow...less, just a prelude," while barren dana cries in the kitchen. "i know you and dad were...disappointed...that i chose the path that i'm on."
thinking about how mulder said, "this is a normal life," and how she smiled. (he doesn't know any different). how, in the end, he said, "hey, scully? i know it's not your normal life, but thanks for coming out there with me."
(christmas before quantico, "i guess i'm afraid of making a big mistake. dad thinks i am." and missy's response: "it's not his life, dana.")
her application to adopt emily was rejected: "you're a single woman who's never been married or had a long-term relationship. you're in a high stress, time intensive, and dangerous occupation."
bill's reaction: "sounds like something your partner would say. this isn't about any little girl, dana. this is about you. it's about some...void, some emptiness inside you that you're trying to fill."
and mulder to the judge: "the fact that she can adopt this child, her own flesh and blood, is something i don't feel i have the right to question, and i don't believe anyone has the right to stand in the way of."
(that last christmas with missy before everything: "there is no right or wrong. life is just a path...just don't mistake the path for what is really important in life. the people you're going to meet along the way. you don't know who you're going to meet when you join the FBI. you don't know how your life is going to change, or how you're going to change the life of others.")
and ultimately, it all leads to a leather couch. and after contemplating that sacrifice of normalcy, what she should want, the decisions she could have made, she says, "i once considered spending my whole life with this man...what i would have missed."
she could've been a doctor, like her father wanted. she could've settled down, married waterston, had a normal life, like her friends and brother wanted. but what would she have missed?
"what if there was only one choice and all the other ones were wrong?" / "and all the...choices would then lead to this very moment. one wrong turn, and...we wouldn't be sitting here together."
#i truly believe that what's made this show so lasting and rich to so many generations#is how completely in touch with raw human experience it always was. there was always this kind of bleak undertone of...this is how it is...#and very rarely was it ever overcome or accepted or boldly subverted. it just was.#the pressures and the grief and the traps of abuse and trauma and power structures. this is how it is. this is how it feels.#'people thought the storyline and characters for x-files made it a 'dark' show but i never saw it that way.#i always thought mulder and scully were the light in dark places.'#my favorite quote about the show and why i think it's so comforting. it's the harsh reality of the world#of which mulder and scully are not exempt#but it's also mulder and scully going wherever they are needed with their unending kindness and their perseverance and their passion#and they bring all of those things to each other too. that's why she chose THIS life. despite it NOT being normal.#despite it NOT being what her father wanted for her. despite it NOT being easy. she chooses it over and again#because he is bringing light to dark places and she wants to be where he is and she wants to be doing important work. she wants to be#'on the side of the victim'#and that's rarely supported by societal structures and it's hard. but like she says#what would she have missed??#txf.txt#you people make me crazy when you dismiss her decisions and act like she Ruined Her Life or mulder Ruined Her Life#congratulations! you've missed the point!#all things#emily#dreamland

IDK how deep into BB and NGE lore you are, but I'm going insane after rewatching EoE. Like everyone knows about Ore ga Ichiro. But no one is talking about how Air in the G string, which is sampled for New Star, was used in EoE during the pinnacle of Asuka's growth as a character (and for a bad ass fight!) Now I'm going insane trying to figure out what is Jiro's connection. I'm trying to look at just the songs themselves, but even then that's tricky....
Tumblr media
i’ve never gone off the deep end for nge lol so i don’t think i can contribute too much tbh!!!! but i think that’s a fantastic catch in recognising that saburo and asuka both utilise air in the g string, like whenever i think of nge and bb, it’s usually the
gendo🟰rei parallels in doing the most shady shit for his wife
rei🟰ramuda parallels as clones created for a purpose they cannot escape from and their growth into self identity
shinji🟰ichiro parallels for even tho shinji’s personality is completely different from ichiro’s lol, they have the same issue of not really moving until pointed in the direction they need to go, and some other stuff i think might constitute as a deep dive analysis on both their characters i don’t think i’m very qualified to give lol (eg a reliance on the comfort of familiarity/unwillingness to trust others etc)
which i believe is the usual analysis lol. i def can’t help you out music wise (it’s been forever never mind not being musically trained lmao) but thematically???? why couldn’t it be jiro🟰asuka as well??? like i think saburo🟰asuka is more obvious since they’re both prideful and condescending lol and it’s loss that makes the both of them stop and reevaluate, but jiro goes thru similar character growth for the same reason, bc bb lost. jiro was also blindly prideful of the mission he ‘took’ from ichiro, what sensenfukoku is all about lol, like in the same way asuka went to war bc they were attacked and that’s all the reason she needed to fight, jiro also hated samatoki bc that’s how ichiro felt and therefore he should as well
since jiro and saburo are often depicted as two sides of the same coin and asuka has enough depth in her character that i think can be shared between the both of them lol
(tho on the point of jiro🟰rei, jiro used to refer to himself as ichiro’s ‘clone’. rei self-destructing and freeing herself from gendo on her own terms could also, if you squint lol, parallel with jiro sacrificing himself for saburo in the first drb since in that moment he wasn’t ichiro’s clone trying to defeat samatoki, but saburo’s big bro trying to protect him but it’s still a goal that aligns with ichiro blah blah blah lol)

Every couple of seasons TNG goes 'Hang on, we have some super talented actors here; we should give them something to really sink their teeth into!' And then they give Brent Spiner some fun villainous camp and Patrick Stewart a full agonized King-Lear-on-the-moor psychological breakdown.

sick of "im sexually active but i can't be pregnant. choice of contraceptive? lesbianism 😜" jokes. replace them with just saying very politely "the only game i play at those rodeos are bumper clams" and carry on. same effect less transphobic and horribly embarrassing in a novel and thrilling way. peace and love

it's wednesday!
“Johnny.” Her voice is barely a whisper.
“Don’t sound so happy,” he snaps. “You were going to leave without me, remember?”
She exhales, nuzzling into the pillow. “Sorry.”
“Sorry?” he repeats, grabbing her jaw. She goes limp, waiting for him to do whatever it is he is going to do. Not for the first time he thinks if he ever meets Abernathy he’ll kill her. “Sorry for what?”
V’s eyes droop, half-lidded so she looks like she’s about to fall back asleep. Her hand is clammy against his forearm, metal joints clacking softly. “You don’t need me.”

trying something new where i just decided to give myself a sweeping presidential pardon for everything that i’ve ever done in my life. so now when a horrifically embarrassing memory pops up i just say to myself “oh, i already forgave you for that” and then just move on with my day.

Can you imagine what MY FATHER would say...if I were to give up command of this vessel, jeopardize hundreds of lives, risk interplanetary war, all for the life of one person? ◭ My logic is uncertain where MY SON is concerned.

another minor grammar pet peeve i have is people quoting quotes with quotes in them using double quotes for the quote e.g:
“so then i said “me running away with breadsticks” and everyone clapped”
rather than
“so then i said ‘me running away with breadsticks’ and everyone clapped”

☀️ its fascinating that you say P3 has shaped your worldview because... Well not to trauma dump here but back then when I discovered the game (it was back then when p4 was already out) i was... In a REALLY bad place and wondering about unaliving myself. I wont go into much detail but kids are trash man and teens are even worse. and then this game came around. With an aesthetic I really liked. i am not a native english speaker so it was hard for me at first but somehow this game just... /spoke to me/. A game about life and death and what it means to be alive and what it means to have a REASON to live, somehow... Convinced me to go a bit longer. I mean it when I say this: Persona 3 saved my life. And no other game can ever come close to such an experience. (Even tho from a quality standpoint P5 certainly is up there)
oh dude that is so valid thank you for sharing this. seriously though, im happy that youre here! and im sure many others are too! the ☀️ brightening lives and all that :]
yea i can see why p3 just clicked with so many people since it first came out. i was always curious on why it's so beloved by fans, when p5 and even p4 are literally right there with their overall better gameplay experiences. p5 literally got the franchise mainstream to insane heights lol. im... so glad i got into persona the way i did. of course, everyone's experiences w these games are different and special to them in their own way.
i got into persona 3 as an adult and as a result the lens in which i viewed the story's themes were heightened, in a way. as a teen i just know i would have reacted more volatilely i struggle to think about it LOL but both experiences would still be pretty intense. it's just that, as an adult there's more room to digest it when im not troubled by algebra hw. i was just more equipped for it (also i played omori two summers ago LMAOO). ofc i only turned 20 a few weeks ago LOL but i get why p3 means so much to people.
because it's like... 2000s nostalgia coupled with a game that figuratively holds your hand through the uncertainty of death yknow? p3 is a friend, basically. its entire thesis is based upon companionship (exactly what i highlight in an analysis i have drafted somewhere but HHH i dont want this to get too long lmao)
in the shaping my worldviews thing... its really more like it cemented my 'philosophies' :] like i said, equipped with the stuff i learned before, p3 having the message that it did just... hit super close to home! like yeah! that's what i've been saying dude!! kindness really is enough!!
"You don't have to save the world to find meaning in life... Sometimes all you need is something simple, like someone to take care of."
LIKE YEA GIRL THATS EXACTLY IT!! its so cool! i actually admire people who grew up with p3 because man if i heard this line ages ago... well, again, idk if i would be able to grasp it fully at the time... but still! this is so good, poetry in motion. and like u said its aesthetics are gorgeous and aim to capture the essence of its themes - and it did.
im a p5 baby like bro i love p5. soft spot for it. thats the closest persona game i "grew up" with and it came at such an opportune time for me, being a teen stuck between a rock and a hard place. typical. and p5 validated my teenage angst bs so much. its so refreshing to see a game's theme being rebellion. that was me i thought. those characters are going through something that similarly happened to me. teenage rebellion is such a fun thing to explore!
so p5 validated my struggles while p3 did something deeper than that, somehow. i think it just made me .. stronger? like it made me move on from struggles. "by remembering death you learn how to live" so... i guess p3 taught me how to live as crazy as that sounds. but you get me
persona 5 overall is great -- everyone agrees, like its objectively just a better game. but persona 3 ends up more beloved because of its subjective value as a piece of art. there's a lot of heart and soul to put into it.
it's more simple when compared to p5 at first glance, but simple doesn't mean less. which is why more people experiencing it will be nice to see

Meet the seven new frog species we just named after iconic Star Trek captains!
Tumblr media Tumblr media

At the right time of year along rushing streams in the humid rainforests that stretch the length of Madagascar's eastern and northern mountain ridges, otherworldly trills of piercing whistles can be heard.
Are they birds? Insects? Communicator beeps? Tricorder noises?
No, they're little treefrogs!

Until recently, we thought all of the populations of these little brown frogs across the island were one widespread species, Boophis marojezensis, described in 1994. But genetics in the early 2000s and 2010s showed that there were several species here, not just one.
Now my colleagues and I have shown that they are in fact eight separate species, each with unique calls!
These whistling sounds reminded us so much of Star Trek sound effects that we decided to name the seven new species after Star Trek captains: Boophis kirki, B. picardi, B. janewayae, B. siskoi, B. pikei, B. archeri, and B. burnhamae.

I subtly and not-so-subtly built some Star Trek references into the paper, but probably the best one is this one:
'Finding these frogs sometimes requires considerable trekking; pursuing strange new calls, to seek out new frogs in new forests; boldly going where no herpetologist has gone before.'
— Vences et al. 2024
There’s a real sense of scientific discovery and exploration here, which we think is in the spirit of Star Trek.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are at least two Trekkies amongst the authors (including yours truly). As fans of Star Trek, we are also just pleased to dedicate these new species to the characters who have inspired and entertained us over the decades.
On a personal note, this marks a milestone for me, as it means I have now described over 100 frog species! I am very pleased that the 100th is Captain Janeway's Bright-eyed Frog, Boophis janewayae (if you count them in order of appearance in the paper)—she is probably my favourite captain, and I really love Star Trek: Voyager.
You can read more about the discovery of these new species on my website! You can also read the Open Access paper published in Vertebrate Zoology here.
