IMPOSSIBLE HORROR (2017)

This was a super low budget movie, a “micro” budget as some might say.  Some productions in this situation lean into the budget, offering a winking meta commentary on the limited funds.  This movie, “Impossible Horror,” doesn’t do that.  It simply does what it can with what little it has. 

We start with Lily, a young woman with insomnia.  Her apartment is haunted.  She aspires to live a creative life.  She goes for a walk one night and hears a mysterious scream!  She begins to go for night walks and encounters another young woman, Hannah.  There are also strange hoodie people.  Each night, after the scream, they find a random object where the scream originated.  One night there is a typewriter, but the hoodie people take it first.  Hannah fights them in a rather neat, low budget, fight.

Lily decides to make a movie of their adventures.  She films them with her smart phone.  One night the scream leads them to a buried journal, which she hides from Hannah.  Lily reads the journal, which is by Amber, Hannah’s former girlfriend, who killed herself and now haunts Lily’s apartment!  Turns out, Amber and other people were also hunting the scream, all for their own purposes, but each of the people ended up killing themselves.

They visit one dude who did not succeed in killing himself.  Lily goes to talk to him, and he tries to munch of her feet.  She grapples with a sheet before Hannah pulls her free.  Lily then cuts herself and enters a crazed state.  The scream leads them to a buried notebook, inside of which are Polaroid-style photographs of people who were hunting the scream, including Lily!  There is an extended fight scene between Hannah and the hoodie people over the notebook, but she and Lily escape with it. 

Hannah wants to destroy the notebook.  Lily needs it for her movie, and she and Hannah have an extended struggle over the books.  It’s nothing like the fight from “John Carpenter’s They Live” (1988), but it’s actually not bad.  Lily ends up stabbing Hannah and then chases her into an underground garage.  Lily stalks after her with a little metallic shove.  She finally sees Hannah, but a security guard interrupts her.  Lily approaches him and stabs him in the stomach with the shovel.  Hannah runs to Lily’s room and hides in the bathroom.  The ghost tries to help Hannah, but Lily finally stands outside the bathroom tell and tells Hannah that she should kill herself: “Aren’t you tired of failing?  There’s nothing wrong with giving up.”

Hannah removes her own picture from the notebook, and there is a razor.  She is about to slit her own wrist, but she hears Lily watching their filmed adventures.  Hannah leaves the bathroom and joins her.  “This is pretty cool,” Hannah says.  “Yeah,” Lily says, “It’s not terrible.”  Hannah says that Lily should keep working on the film.  Lily says that she needs an ending.  “What did you have in mind?” Hannah asks.  Lily smiles at Hannah, and then the hoodie people attack!  They overwhelm Hannah and knock the notebook out of her hand.  They are about to stab Hannah, but Lily picks up the notebook and starts to tear out a page!  She kicks her laptop to Hannah and tells her, “Film it.  Please.”

The hoodie people attack Lily and disembowel her!  She still manages to destroy the notebook, and the hoodie people disintegrate.  Before Lily dies she has a vision of Hannah and herself going to a movie theater and watching her movie, “Impossible Horror.”  Hannah gets up and stumbles to the porch, where she hears people screaming everywhere.

This was surprisingly…good.  It’s a weird Lovecraftian horror movie about an unexplainable eldritch threat that drives people insane, but the filmmakers limited the scope to just two young people, so the plot didn’t overwhelm the skills or budget of the production.  The filmmaking techniques drew from many inspirations, from found footage to your run-of-the-mill teenager terror flicks to kung-fu action movies.  Most scenes were successful.  The fighting scenes looked like a lot of fun to film, but I felt that they detracted from the overall creepiness of the movie.  The acting was…competent.  Lily and Hanna’s banter was reminiscent of a mumblecore movie from the early 2000’s.  Hannah was flat and emotionless, but she was meant to be that way.  Lily showed a bit more range, but even then her reactions were constrained by the typical young-person-only-speaks-ironically trope.  Her physical acting was excellent.  Early on, she walks outside with a baseball bat, but before she leaves the building she performs an awkward practice swing.  Later on, as she’s chasing Hannah, she embodies menace and terror.  She extends the blade of her metal shovel with a practiced flick of her wrist.  She was creepy and deranged.

PA DOC Sued for Discriminating Against Person with Disabilities: The Right to AAC in Prison

there was a recent press release from Disability Rights PA about current litigation happening in PA that is trying to ensure that John Topper, a man with Huntington's disease, can access an Augmentative/Alternative Communication device while incarcerated.

Currently, the DOC is denying him all access to any communication aids, forcing him to "communicate by typing notes on a tablet and passing it back and forth with the person he is attempting to communicate with. This tablet breaks frequently, and prison staff regularly prevent him from bringing the tablet with him everywhere in the prison...After returning from the hospital, the DOC denied him a working communication aid for ten days. As a result, he was only able to communicate with psychiatry staff via thumbs up and down gestures."

this has dramatically impacted Topper's wellbeing: " 'This has been such an emotional and mental struggle for me daily. Day-to-day routines are very hard without a means of effective communication and I have to struggle to have my daily needs met,' said John Topper, the plaintiff in the case. "

Topper cannot access healthcare, daily programming, or stay in contact with his family members. Prison staff refuse to provide any forms of communication aids for daily interactions, making it difficult and sometimes impossible for Topper to request things like toothpaste, toilet paper, or other daily needs. This is cruel, harmful punishment that highlights the types of carceral violence that disabled people face while incarcerated.

This lawsuit is suing to get Topper daily and continuous access to an AAC text to speech device. His counsel already bought him this device and the prison has it available, and yet they refuse to give it to him for pointless and arbitrary reasons. They've told Topper he has to choose between a wheelchair accessible cell and a cell with an outlet, they've told him that they were making his current tablet accessible but then said the only accessible adaptation they could add was a screen-reader, which his does not need, and have threatened and taken away his current tablet many times. The cruelty is the point.

It's vital as disabled people that we have solidarity with those most targeted by the state, and that we fight for our comrades currently incarcerated. Prisons are disabling and prisons target disabled people: we need to fight to make sure our comrades can get their needs met, and we need to fight to free them all!

I've reached out to ask about how to send letters to him/info for his commissary fund; I will update this post when I get more information.

I mean from Jason’s side Dick is the ideal son who Bruce loves, Jason saw Bruce’s absolute grief when bludhaven was nuked as red hood. As Robin he was constantly and unfairly compared to Dick Grayson bc while Jason was great. He had a normal but sad ass life while being naturally gifted and brilliant, dick was training before he could crawl, Dick had never learned to stay still while also being naturally grifted and brilliant. Jason couldn’t do the things Dick could do at 12 bc dick had been training for 11 years by that point but neither he nor Bruce really gave himself that grace. Dick is proof of the concept of child heroes, while he is kinda like proof that children really shouldn’t be on the field. Dick became this well respected, important person. He got to grow from Robin whereas Jason is still burdened by his time in the pixie boots.

And from Dicks side? Dick got out, he LEFT Bruce’s shadow and when Bruce gave his mantle to some kid? He was nice about it! I mean he was too busy with his amazing girlfriend and his team to really become hung up on it! He gave the kid his number and his OG Robin suit and goes maybe we can form a relationship. And then the kid dies and Dick is destroyed, not only did his kid brother die, his kid brother DIED in HIS legacy. And the Jason comes back. Steals his suit, and begins killing people. Nearly gets Dick killed by the cops and spends so long trying to ruin Dicks solid reputation. Not only that? But in the suit father preformed in? With the name Clark Kent gave him??? One of the men he respects most in the world? WHICH he proceeds to do again?? With their Dead Dads costume? After all the SHIT he spewed about no one giving a damn about his death. About how Bruce and his crusade killed a child. And he goes and not only hurts Tim, the brother Dick worked SO hard to build a relationship with bc the last time he got out a Kid died. But also Damian, a literal 10 year old. Dick sends him to Arkham bc when he got sent to regular prison he killed hundreds of people? And sure now?? Jason’s working with the family sometimes? But if it was just a difference in morals Dick wouldn’t have that much of an issue? He’s friends with people who have differing moral codes! Hell he’s DATED people with different moral codes. But? Jason made their beef personal and now Dicks stuck with the knowledge that his younger brother DID a lot of that to HURT him specifically. Bruce was dead for a portion of this? Did that stop Jason from trying to ruin everything dicks ever believed in? Nope.

Like Dick has to exist knowing that he loves his brother and his brother very well could and would do what he did to him again.

Christmas oneshot with Michael

You sat on your couch staring at your lazily decorated tree, a carefully wrapped gift resting on your lap, anxiously awaiting the arrival of a certain masked murderer. As time passed, doubt crept in- would he even show up? Did he have any interest in Christmas or the thought behind gifts? You held onto a flicker of hope that he did, especially after spending countless hours selecting the perfect present for him.

Michael remained an enigma, always maintaining a significant distance from you. Yet, there were fleeting moments when he allowed you to draw near, close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body and to hear the soft breaths escaping from behind the mask. But just as quickly as those moments arrived, they vanished. This left you grappling with the nature of your relationship with michael. Was it something romantic? Or was he merely using you for food and shelter, waiting for the perfect moment to stab you in the back?

Gratitude surged within you for the simple act of breathing in this moment. The familiar creaking of the floorboards jolted you from your thoughts, prompting you to swiftly glance around the room in search of that haunting white mask. There he was, lurking in the shadows of the corner, almost invisible in the dim light coming from your christmas tree. Your heart pounded with a mix of fear and excitement. As you rose from your seat, you awkwardly fumbled with the gift in your hands and offered him a brief greeting.

“I wasn't sure if you wanted anything, but I got you something regardless.” your voice trembled as you spoke, a part of you bracing for him to emerge and turn on you at that very moment.

Michael stepped out from the shadows, and you quickly noted with a sense of relief that he didn't have his knife in hand, meaning you were safe for now, at least for the moment. You held out the gift, feeling his rough and calloused hands brush against yours for just a split second as he took it from you, a small interaction that felt almost intimate amidst the tension. His movements were stiff as he tore the wrapping paper off, carelessly discarding it to the side. You bit your nail anxiously as he opened the box, revealing a pair of new boots that may not quite fit, possibly a size too big or too small, since you had no idea what Michael's shoe size was, but you thought it might have been quite some time since he had replaced the tattered ones he was currently wearing, which were worn out and stained with dirt and dried blood.

Michael stared at the boots for what seemed like an eternity before closing the box and placing it on the table, leaving you in a state of confusion. He stood there, gazing at you with a slight tilt of his head, making you wonder if he liked the gift or not. Your heart raced as he quickly rounded the table; your body stiffened as you braced yourself, fearing for the worst. To your surprise, you felt the warm embrace of his arms wrapping stiffly around you, pulling you tight against his chest. The familiar metallic scent that always accompanied him was even more pronounced now. For years, Michael had not experienced the kindness of being treated like a normal humming being. It had been so long since someone had looked at him the way you did, with that familiar spark in your eyes whenever you caught sight of him in the corner. He couldn't understand you, he knew fear lingered in your heart, yet you continued to treat him as if he were just another person in your life. You always made sure to leave extra food for him, leaving your back door unlocked so he wouldn't have to struggle to enter. You never disclosed his presence in your home to anyone, whether out of fear that he might harm you or for your own personal reasons. Michael was truly grateful for your gift, even though it caught him by surprise.

You were genuinely expecting Michael to pull away as soon as you returned the hug, but shockingly, he didn't budge. Instead, you seized the moment to relax further into his embrace, savoring the warmth and comfort it provided, all while attempting your best to push aside the chilling reminder that this man has taken multiple lives. It was a surreal contradiction, feeling safe and at ease in the arms of someone with such a dark history. But in that moment, all that mattered was the security of his hold, even if that comfort was deeply unsettling.
