I've also seen it suggested that Zenos is a flat character, and I think that's true! I think he is intentionally drawn both sharply and flatly to make him stand out and to play up his symbolic and thematic role. But I think, especially post-Endwalker, he is frequently reduced to the aspects that serve as metacommentary on gaming and MMOs and FFXIV itself, but equally important (and more important up through Endwalker itself) is his role as imperialism's final output.
Zenos initially feints at being a certain kind of rounded villain. He has cool armor and a signature weapon (these things matter in a game like FFXIV), he's presented as a genuine believer in merit in juxtaposition to his sexist and racist officers, he's well-spoken and takes a personal interest in you. In fact, he's a lot like Gaius van Baelsar, whose brief but charismatic (and, due to MSQ roulette, repeatedly viewed) appearances in ARR suggested to some the impression of a noble figure in service to the wrong ideals, one of gaming's favorites kinds of Rounded Characters With Nuanced Writing.
It's possible to mistakenly believe through just about the Ala Mhigo dungeon itself that maybe Zenos will have a turn, that his relentless torture of conquered peoples accomplishes some greater end in his mind. After all, wasn't Gaius also fixated on violence and strength? Didn't he also believe that man raises himself up through conflict? And Gaius's Praetorium speech has fans and defenders to this day!
This is why the Royal Menagerie and the ultimate flattening of Zenos's character is effective, compelling, and ultimately necessary. Where ARR ends still pretending that maybe Gaius was an interesting dude with things to say, Stormblood finishes the job of (literally) stripping violent imperialism of its mask and showing it for what it is. Prosperity, the Roman peace, technological progress, all of those are incidental outputs to this, imperialism's true engine: the naked exercise of power and glorification of violence for their own sakes, as ends in themselves. Zenos fights so he can fight more. That's the punchline.
And importantly, Endwalker confirms it's always the punchline. Garlemald is drowning in recurring symbols and archetypes. Corvos and Goug and Amaurot and (after its destruction) Garlemald proper all at various points represent for different characters a mythical pre-collapse Eden, the reclamation or realization of which (through the right kind of violence applied to the right kind of people) is the putative goal of the empire. There's multiple ideal imperial men, multiple evil scientists, multiple conflicted collaborators. They serve to enrich each other's stories because you can set Yotsuyu's story against Fordola's against Gosetsu's and learn something from it.
But there is only one future for the Garlean Empire (distinct from the nation and people of Garlemald). Zenos is the Crown Prince when he enters the game, and (probably) the last direct male heir in the line of Galvus when he dies. He is the nameless assassin who commits regicide and the opportunistic tyrant who seizes power in the aftermath. He is both the last corrupt emperor and, through the Telophoroi, the barbarian hordes raging at his own gates.
Zenos is the endpoint of the Garlean Empire. Anyone who has survived him will be part of something different; there are no alternatives to him (most notably, Nerva never appears, except as a blasphemy, and Gaius explicitly declines further involvement with Garlemald). He is the nihilistic, violent dead end that lies at the heart of empire. If you feel his aims are hollow and venal, then all is as it should be.
#ffxiv#zenos#endwalker spoilers#stormblood spoilers#and of course its important to note that his Endwalker arc is on some level about recognizing how hollow this is#that even zenos before the end gets to go 'guys. its about finding your own meaning amidst meaninglessness'#is a core part of both his arc and ffxiv/endwalker's overall humanist project#meta: durai report

"I have completed the initial review of your business plan and cash flow and overall, you've done a great job putting everything together! Often we have recommendations and changes to help strengthen one's application, however, I don't see any significant gaps in what you've presented."
this is great. I'm going to get a good grade in applying for a business loan, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve.
#erin's adventures in slp#to be clear obviously applying successfully IS normal to want#but I already knew I had the loan in the bag (I have bizarrely good credit) it's just all this hoop-jumping I have to do#and as someone who has always felt like kind of a financial idiot#I'm secretly very pleased that they liked my very important business-type book report thing I made all by myself#it had so much business stuff in it#my next problem is that I think I may have asked for too much#it's a good problem to have -- the pace of client influx has not been an explosion but it's been perfectly healthy for a new business#but now if I ask I feel like I'm gonna look like I fucked up my initial projections#and if they say no I'm gonna be paying more interest than I need to#erin of one month ago was just... that bitch was real scared there for a bit

With it being Pride and all, I'm seeing a lot of well meaning, progressive Christians being supportive and saying "calling for the death of queer people is bad actually" and "Jesus never condemned being queer", and less people wanting people like me dead is always nice, but this reminded me of something I have noticed a lot over the years:
A lot of Christians seem to kinda believe in some form of Arianism
So in mainstream denominations of Christianity, Christians believe in one God in Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) with all three persons of the Trinity being of the same substance, having always existed, and none being subordinate or superior to the rest
Arianism is a heretical Christian doctrine which rose to prominence in the 3rd century, which took a bunch of different forms based on disagreements of sub-sub-doctrines, but the gist of it was that the Son was not eternal, but rather a creation begotten by the Father who was distinct and subordinate to him (Arius, the namesake of the heresy believed this happened before time, while others overlapped this belief with other heresies to declare Jesus did not exist until the Holy Spirit impregnated the Virgin Mary)
I bring this all up cause in a lot of debates about things like which, if any, Old Testament laws still hold and what things count as sins, it's pretty common to see Christians say "Jesus never said anything on this," in that there don't seem to be any recorded statements from him on things like homosexuality in the Gospels
A lot of Christians treat Jesus as seemingly having a separate set of opinions from those espoused by God in the Old Testament, and in many cases seem to believe that every appearance of God in the Old Testament is specifically God the Father, with the Son only showing up in the New Testament
The Father and the Son in a lot of casual religious discourse are treated as fully separate beings with different opinions, with Christ being assumed to be radio silent before his incarnation
Also the Holy Spirit is just kinda...there? Ask people about what the Holy Spirit even is and the answers get even more fragmented than the discourse I just described
TL;DR: a lot of Christians, in pursuit of not being awful people, accidentally and unknowingly reinvented a centuries dead heresy, and the ghost of Arius is laughing
#christianity#christology#heresy#I spelled impregnated as impregnanted by accident at first#none of this is actually all that important#I left the church years ago#and I was raised pentacostal#and my church was weeeeeeird#people weren't content to speak in tongues#some would scribble shit while “full of the holy spirit”#then interpret it like minority report#(I have never watched minority report but I think that's the one where psychics scribble drawings of future crimes)#I promise this post is not me projecting my very heterodox religious upbringing onto Christianity as a whole#I 've seen this happen in much more normal churches

today's the anniversary of john's last letter to ada written knowing he is already infected & begging her to go public with everything they uncovered together at arklay, turn on the lab's self destruct & to put him down if she ever saw him turned. she never read his last words, they were many on a list of letters sent to her & burned after her transfer to NEST where she was light on her feet beginning to befriend annette birkin (a relationship that eventually led to an affair), she forgot about john as quickly as he fell in love with her, happy july 8th everyone
#* file // : OOC — ( 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐂𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐄 . )#i get why this little connection was omitted from RE2R since there's no reason for ada to tie herself to umbrella#especially to someone she just met (leon)#but it is an important part of her role in raccoon city#i have talked about him before & obviously there's a few mentions of him scattered about my replies#& as far as my interpretation is concerned i do think they met at arklay rather than ada pursuing john outside the lab#considering he was made head of research @ arklay around '95 & i don't really see the need for ada's investigation into umbrella#to have lasted longer than a year#while she did play on his feelings & obsession with her it doesn't make sense to me for umbrella's security#to allow someone's girlfriend to visit the premises of their secret research facility unless she is a fellow researcher#& the letter is addressed as if ada is familiar with the facility + john's awareness of her intellect / aptitude at solving puzzles#which was probably a CV requirement for working in spencer's wacky funhouse#i do wish we got a few more hints into their relationship beyond the letter + ada carrying a photo of them with her +#her either faking or being genuinely distraught to hear of his death#because it's one time ada ever makes use of seduction#beyond it her flirtation with leon is kind of always mocking#it's routine for them - muscle memory almost#& much like leon & as i've mentioned previously i do think there was some bond forming between them#wesker's report mentions how john is known as a risk because of his temperament being unsuited for the tyrant project#number one voted most likely to leak umbrella's secrets#with how umbrella treats dissent i'm sure both him & ada were under similar levels of stress#& what makes ada so insidious & ingenious to me is that despite her folly being getting a little too (emotionally) invested in her missions#as i think RE4/RE6 illustrate wonderfully by her breaking character to show concern for people & sympathy for carla#(almost always leon but i take what i can get)#she has no qualms in using people she does genuinely care for#with leon especially it's a case of trust in his survival abilities despite her putting him in harms way to serve as a distraction#& to unknowingly help in her own goals by making her mission easier + taking care of the threat#am i just repeating myself? yea it's what i do

I had my final review for my probationary period at work today, and it went really well. Feels good to finally have a boss who appreciates the fact that I'm a perfectionist/neurotically detail-oriented weirdo
#also oddly enough the research skills i cultivated in high school/college are really helping me in this job#my boss was like 'you're always doing stuff that i would never think to do and it's impressive'#and i'm just like#you've got all the weird research projects i did at school to thank for that#like i did an internship at the start of covid for a literary org in chicago#and they wanted me to find important dates in authors' lives so we could make a chicago literary calendar#and i was like. okay. lemme find out when they received certain awards.#which then had me spending DAYS combing through newspaper archives from the last century trying to find the specific date an award was give#i also found one author's wedding anniversary#like is this an uncommon way of going about a project like this? bc my internship supervisor was impressed#and i was just like. well newspapers tend to report on awards like this so it just made sense to me?#and my supervisor said they wanted stuff outside of birthdays & death days#and imo the next most notable event in a lot of authors lives/careers is receiving awards or getting a novel published#(which yeah i also combed through digital archives to find publication notices for certain books)

one goofy ass thing i like about my job is we all really like having staff feedback after programs (like after in service, after summer reading, etc) because it just makes it easier to make it actually helpful and easier next time around and that’s all we want right, like PERSONALLY i don’t want to be anxious about a program and dreading it all year, which means i get to do what i Love which is offer my opinion constructively so i can be like “i think some people just don’t understand paylocity, it is a little confusing & for them, going through that app is this scary time sink so they don’t open it ever.” and no one is taking it personally because five other people wrote in “beanstack scares me” and “i’m not using teams” and we can just adjust our expectations of our older coworkers instead of writing people up for it akskd.
#i was like “’not me tho i get it but maybe ask [tech person] to do an explainer? i believe they have a whole bit about this’#and then we get a explainer on it the next in service and all the tech afraid people are like ‘oh you can turn it on on the desktop?’ yes 😭#we had a whole thing about office bc they’ve tried to explain they pinned the ‘POLICIES AND PROCEDURES ON REPORTED LOST CHILD’ on the#share point bc it’s a library that’s something that happens on a semi regular basis and we live off a busy street it’s important to make#sure the kid didn’t wander out of the building those cars Will mow you down.#and the collective ‘OH!’ when they showed us how to get to the sharepoint. i figured that out day 2.#i bookmarked the page and added my own books marks. like half of them were shocked.#they have been here 10 years or more. 😭#i like to say ‘i love hearing about what the director does during the day i think the projects are all fascinating’ bc i think phrasing a#compliment for like ~admin transparency~ as a compliment is imo the best way to reward admin transparency.#also tbh yes it Is interesting to me like being a director is honestly a lot about Building Maintenence as it is budget and networking and#managing big problems with staff etc. it’s honestly fascinating how much she has to know about upkeep as director.#also. listen i’m sorry i love being bribed with food. have office hours with snacks. give me an excuse not to work.#i loved staff day at goodwill too i loved not dealing w work and badgering the corporate guy while the managers worked the front#and then getting pizza. they would grill for us on employee appreciation day.#do u know what my department store did. they gave us a payday bar.#that shits insulting like just don’t do anything? u Kno u pay shit and have is on these ass schedules what’s your problem why are u gloating#now ya closed!#it’s karma!#anyways this one is nice i think my manager is really bad at schedules and this is a gripe i’ve heard from wveryon so it’s not just me but#it’s other wise as everyone puts it ‘not nearly as toxic as other libraries’ like no one here is actively committing psychological warfare#over some office job nonsense. our patrons aren’t actively trying to get us shut down. that’s a nice change.

NOAA “should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories,” Project 2025 reads. The proposals roughly amount to two main avenues of attack. First, it suggests that the NWS should eliminate its public-facing forecasts, focus on data gathering, and otherwise “fully commercialize its forecasting operations,” which the authors of the plan imply will improve, not limit, forecasts for all Americans. Then, NOAA’s scientific-research arm, which studies things such as Arctic-ice dynamics and how greenhouse gases behave (and which the document calls “the source of much of NOAA’s climate alarmism”), should be aggressively shrunk. “The preponderance of its climate-change research should be disbanded,” the document says. It further notes that scientific agencies such as NOAA are “vulnerable to obstructionism of an Administration’s aims,” so appointees should be screened to ensure that their views are “wholly in sync” with the president’s.
Climate change is the single most important issue in the entirety of human history. One party wants to fight it. The other party wants to let the earth burn; in fact, they want to accelerate the fire.

Warning: Long Post No one reads long texts anymore, but despite everything I've been through with my country, my family, and recently my son, I need to get this off my chest. It's completely unbelievable to me that so many people still don't understand the background of the genocide in Palestine. What kind of journalists or influencers do we have today? Are they too afraid to report and remind their audiences about the real story behind what's happening now? No, it's not just one year of suffering! It's outrageous how the media consistently ignores what Palestinians have been enduring for decades. Have they, or you, even bothered to look at the statistics of how many Palestinians have been killed by Israel since 1948? How many children have been killed? Who holds the responsibility for what's happening now? I often wonder: what if the situation Palestinians face was applied somewhere else? For example, what if, after World War II, the West had decided that all Jews should have a state in the USA—let’s say Chicago—how would the people of Chicago have reacted? Imagine the people there being driven off the land their families had worked for generations, stripped of their rights, and harassed or persecuted if they resisted. Do international laws simply not apply when ### is involved? Do you know that people in Gaza are killed simply for fun? Yes, for fun! Israeli soldiers have been known to shoot women, children, and even animals on the spot, then walk away. Did you feel the wind when those shots were fired? Or was it too far away for you? Do you understand what death means? Good. Do you know why there are so many Palestinians living in different countries, or maybe even right next door to you, even though they smell like hummus, garlic, za'atar, and other traditional foods? Do you know why your neighbors are Palestinian and not Israeli? It's because we've been forced to flee since 1948. Our cities were erased then, and more are still being erased—through violence, through apartheid laws, through genocide, through different methods. Ilan Pappe, an Israeli historian, wrote a book about hundreds of Palestinian cities that were erased to create the Israel you know today. This isn't a war that started a few days ago or even a year ago—this has been going on since at least 1948. More than 45,000 have been killed in Gaza just in the past year alone. 17 000 of them are children, and 13 000 are women. Do you even know what that means? How it feels to lose your children or part of your family? Are you going to tell us how it feels? Do you have no empathy? Is your heart so closed that you can't see the pain around you? Are you really so blind to the suffering of others? How can you ignore these realities? Do you know that the Israeli military has cut off all electricity and completely halted the import of food, water, fuel, and other necessities? There are no hospitals and no medicines left, and 85% of people in Gaza are living in makeshift tents. Yes, tents—but not like the ones you see in movies. These are handmade from plastic scraps. Do you know that my family is suffering from all of this, and I will lose them in this cold weather if you don't act now? Please help us and donate now!

i can’t stop thinking about this weird little storm chaser AU my brain dreamed up where bill&ted are the POV characters but crucially not the main characters but the problem is that I truly don’t know anything about storms and I worry I’m not smart enough to understand if I do start researching LOL
#N posts stuff#like i have a vague fascination with storms but in largely esoteric/magical thinking ways VS scientific#but for some reason the idea is really sticking: full AU no Unite the World plot points#but they started off bc Liz and Jo wanted to photograph / video some storms as an art project thing#and bill and ted tag along to drive the van for them; and then instead of being a one off they just. keep doing it#and along the way somewhere they pick up Station — just two nonverbal dudes here — who are in it for the Science of it#and then background characters include Rufus and Kellye who man a radio station that focuses on reporting weather or whatever#and they pass along info to each other and they’re friends (weve also been very fixated on Radio lately)#and maybe the crux of the Main Meat of the fic is that Billie and Thea are also big on storm science and are finally old enough to start#tagging along on chases instead of being sequestered out in a shelter with either bill or ted (the other drives solo)#and there’s like. tension about it of the ‘it’s dangerous you’re supposed to do as i Say not as i Do’ variety#conflicting with how much the parents understand about how important it is to the girls#bill and ted being the POV means Technically i don’t necessarily have to Understand a lot bc they probably wouldn’t either#but to have all the other characters engage in coherent conversation we need to have a solid grasp of all the technical shit lol#and unfortunately i’m not the kind of writer who is willing to spin a yarn and make stuff up about it#but i also haven’t really Successfully studied any hard sciences since. uh. high school; most of what i read is nonfiction but it’s also all#like. ‘softer’ sciences — sexuality and disability and on and on ; storms and especially storm Chasing is a lot more technical i think

Really good Twitter thread originally about Elon Musk and Twitter, but also applies to Netflix and a lot of other corporations.
Full thread. Text transcription under cut.
John Bull @garius
One of the things I occasionally get paid to do by companies/execs is to tell them why everything seemed to SUDDENLY go wrong, and subs/readers dropped like a stone. So, with everything going on at Twitter rn, time for a thread about the Trust Thermocline /1
So: what's a thermocline?
Well large bodies of water are made of layers of differing temperatures. Like a layer cake. The top bit is where all the the waves happen and has a gradually decreasing temperature. Then SUDDENLY there's a point where it gets super-cold.
That suddenly is important. There's reasons for it (Science!) but it's just a good metaphor. Indeed you may also be interested in the "Thermocline of Truth" which a project management term for how things on a RAG board all suddenly go from amber to red.
But I digress. The Trust Thermocline is something that, over (many) years of digital, I have seen both digital and regular content publishers hit time and time again. Despite warnings (at least when I've worked there). And it has a similar effect. You have lots of users then suddenly... nope. And this does effect print publications as much as trendy digital media companies. They'll be flying along making loads of money, with lots of users/readers, rolling out new products that get bought. Or events. Or Sub-brands.
And then SUDDENLY those people just abandon them. Often it's not even to "new" competitor products, but stuff they thought were already not a threat. Nor is there lots of obvious dissatisfaction reported from sales and marketing (other than general grumbling). Nor is it a general drift away, it's just a sudden big slide. So why does this happen? As I explain to these people and places, it's because they breached the Trust Thermocline.
I ask them if they'd been increasing prices. Changed service offerings. Modified the product.
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid" Then I ask if they did that the year before. Did they increase prices last year? Change the offering? Modify the product?
Again: "yes, but not much."
The answer is normally: "yes, but not much. And everyone still paid." "And the year before?"
"Yes but not much. And everyone still paid."
Well, you get the idea. And here is where the Trust Thermocline kicks in. Because too many people see service use as always following an arc. They think that as long as usage is ticking up, they can do what they like to cost and product.
And (critically) that they can just react when the curve flattens But with a lot of CONTENT products (inc social media) that's not actually how it works. Because it doesn't account for sunk-cost lock-in.
Users and readers will stick to what they know, and use, well beyond the point where they START to lose trust in it. And you won't see that. But they'll only MOVE when they hit the Trust Thermocline. The point where their lack of trust in the product to meet their needs, and the emotional investment they'd made in it, have finally been outweighed by the physical and emotional effort required to abandon it. At this point, I normally get asked something like:
"So if we undo the last few changes and drop the price, we get them back?"
And then I have to break the news that nope: that's not how it works.
Because you're past the Thermocline now. You can't make them trust you again.

Cass's civilian identity being paper thin is so important to me actually. Barely anyone on the street knows Bruce Wayne's daughter and any of the press who are interested can't uncover a single thing other than him adopting her when she was 19. It leads to a whole lot of speculation but no actual facts.
Meanwhile you have assassins who are the best of the best, the cream of the crop, and anyone who is someone in the evil assassin underworld knows all about David Cain and his daughter who turned rogue and became Batgirl.
Which means most of them see her with Bruce Wayne and are like ohoho a clever plan by Batman indeed! Putting Batgirl undercover as Bruce Wayne's daughter to guard and protect Wayne, who's a key part of all the recent projects to improve Gotham City. Masterful gambit Mr Batman sir, you also get a spy who reports on everything Wayne's doing whenever you need it.
This gives Cass the freedom to not even try to hide herself behind some sort of helpless civilian persona. Attempted kidnappings of Bruce Wayne and his kids have dropped by 90% since she got adopted, as the first one to try and take a fancy party hostage got the shit kicked out of him by Cassandra Wayne while her father watched proudly.
The next attempt brought a gun and she disarmed him then broke his hand. Finally they sent a whole squad of mercenaries to kidnap Bruce and Tim on the way to a W.E business meeting only to find Cass in the car with them. The kidnapping did not go as planned and the goons have several questions as to why the fuck Bruce Wayne's daughter is a metahuman who dodges bullets. They never get answers.
She's the only batkid who never has to fake her abilities. Damian is highly indignant about this but she just pokes his forehead and tells him it's a skill issue when he complains.
