This is so stupid but I was wondering if you might have any Dick and Roy meta? I've always loved your meta posts about the relationships between the Fab Five and different characters and lately, I've been seeing a lot of those posts where people splice certain comic pannels with poems/sayings/inspirational quotes and things that match and I've been wanting to have more in-depth ideas of the relationship between Dick and Roy because they're just so interesting but I don't have the brains to come up with anything myself

when i think about dick grayson and roy harper i think about the trope king + lionheart — a burdened hero, and their loyal protector — and how they switch roles with each other. like two standout dickroy books are probably old friends, new enemies and outsiders (2003), and while they’re both initiated with roy reaching out to dick for help, his motivations are very different. i think that dynamic, and how they don’t fit solely into one role, is part of why i enjoy reading about them so much.

in old friends, roy is the king — he’s trying to track down chesire and find lian, and isn’t initially honest about his intentions. he’s struggling with his decisions, and his faith in himself. dick acts as the moral support, his backup, and also calls him out on his actions.

but their relationship is still loving. there’s a solid foundation of trust that makes dick want to support roy and protect his daughter, to the point that he and jade nguyen show a (very) begrudging respect to each other.

in outsiders, dick is the king — donna has just died, bludhaven is going to shit, and roy knows that he’s spiralling. roy is the solid support who convinces dick to lead a new team because he knows dick hurts himself through isolation. they’re both grieving donna and the loss of their team, but roy forces dick to reconnect again. he forces dick to care.

despite being the leader of the outsiders, dick is uncompromising in his loyalty in roy. he tells people to leave if they don’t accept roy’s authority in the team. after roy is shot, dick takes the same action as roy in the first issue — he brute forces his way into getting roy out of the spiral. he holds a gun to roy’s head and tells him to take it.

im a huge sucker for friends to lovers, but what i really love is two competent people with absolute faith in each other. i dislike the idea that bat-characters are like….. absurdly op and everyone is just in awe of them all the time, but dick’s reputation means that trusting someone the way he trusts roy is important. he watched his teammates die, he watched his sister die to save his life, and he still trusts roy to be there. roy historically has a bit of an inferiority complex about working with dick, but dick does not reciprocate. dick knows roy will be there when it counts.

there’s a particular kind of love that comes from mourning the same person during one of the worst times of your life.

the fact that the early tragedies in their lives are so similar, that they lost family and an idea of place at similar ages, were mentored by mortal men who wanted to do good, but still ended up so close but so different is really really interesting to me. u get to outsiders, and they really know each other in a really intense way.

“Wow…. Yet another gift? You sure you aren’t getting tired of them?” A peer of Teru’s questioned as he stared at the gift bag that was left on his desk. He stared back at them and smiled.

“Jealous, are we?” He asked with a smile. Currently, he was sporting a necklace made by his partner. His partner was notorious for gifting him many things. Why in the bag, there was fresh cookies, a knitted sweater, a clay painted heart, and a scrapbook. His partner, you, gave him so many things… they all laid carefully in his room. To be admired. To be worn. To be cherished.

“No I’m just…. How do you own so much stuff? Like…. Are you able to keep every single thing?!”

“Well of course I am. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn’t?” Teru smiled and picked up the bag and looked at the peer in question, “Now if you’ll excuse me…” He went off, to find his partner.

He made his way outside, a plethora of people talking as they looked at him and his bag, while he did so. He found you standing outside, trying to attempt to hide something as best as you could. He watched and smiled, walking closer. He was almost like a cat with the way he walked. Quietly, carefully…. Almost like he was meaning to scare you.

Teru put a gentle hand on your shoulder, making you jump slightly as you turned your head back to look at him. “Well hello there, darling.”

“Teru! Hi!” You smiled as you turned around, still keeping something hidden behind your back. Teru tried to look over to try and see what it is, but you made sure it was hidden nice and well.

“Darling? What are you hiding?”

“You’ll see in a moment! Tell me what you thought of your surprise!” You smiled as you walked closer to him, slightly elevating yourself to be closer to his lips. He smiled and kissed your head gently.

“They were all very thoughtful, like always, darling.” Teru smiled and ran a hand through your hair with his free hand, “Thank you, Y/N. I appreciate it every time…”

“Welllllllllllll….” You smiled as you pulled out what was behind your back. A stitched teddy bear….. you could tell it was home made based on the stitching job. Some of the threads were still hanging off—not yet cut off and the right eye wasn’t sewed perfectly on.

Teru stared for a moment, marveling in the work and craftsmanship of the bear. He smiled and looked at you, watching as you messed with your necklace. “You made this?”

“You know it! Finished it in class!” You smiled and hugged onto his arm. “You think it looks good? I couldn’t tell because it was my first time ever but I really wanted to go all out for you…”

“Oh darling…. It’s perfect.” Teru kissed your head and smiled at you with a soft sigh, “It’s perfect….. like everything you have for me….”

“Yay!! I’m glad!!” You exclaim with excitement, looking at him with the brightest smile ever. That smile. That’s why he loved everything you made him. Sure, it was nice to know he was cared for because of these gifts…. But it was also because it made you so happy. And it made him happy to know that you spent all this time and dedication on something you loved to do.

After a moment, you both began to walk home. He dropped you off at your home, walking home himself after. He made it to his house, greeting his younger brother and sister as he walked to his room to unwind.

Upon entering his room, one would see many gifts scattered around. On his desk you could see every claw creation, every matching necklace and bracelet, and paper flower bouquets you’ve ever made for him, on his walls every hand drawn card you’d ever handed him, a corner of his room filled with old cookie tins that used to be filled with the delicious treats you’d given him, and on a hook on the back of his door with every knitted scarf you’ve ever made him. He had everything. Every. Single. Thing.

He gently placed down the bear on his bed, placing the bag down and rummaging through it quietly to find where each part went. Up went another hand made card on the wall, down went another clay creation and freshly baked goods on his desk. Up went the knitted sweater on the book, down went the scrapbook onto his bed next to the bear.

He glanced around the room and smiled, sitting down. He messed with his necklace for a moment before grabbing the scrapbook, leisurely skimming through the book as he hummed a gentle tune to himself. The pictures you had managed to capture of you and him were cute. Just a compilation of your dates and study halls together. But it was still so damn sweet and he loved it so much.

He laid down on his bed for a moment, hugging onto the bear as he looked up to see the string of pictures of you and him on his ceiling. He smiled and took a deep breath, getting up again to place the scrapbook on his desk.

He was starting to lose room in his room, but he didn’t care. He didn’t care one bit. He loved every gift you ever made him and he refused to throw them away. He refused to ever put them away so the world couldn’t see them.

That would just be disrespectful to his darling, wouldn’t it?

I mentioned this before— But the character Kyra was originally meant to be shipped with was actually Jamil. But!! After some thought, I ultimately decided that Floyd would be a better partner for Kyra instead.

Soo, take this post as me rambling about how and why Floyra came to be, and why I scrapped the Jamyra concept all together.

Kyra already had an established character and backstory before being shipped with anyone. Usually, I like to create the characters and flesh them out before shipping them with anyone. Although there are times where I do create characters for the sake of shipping (*cough cough* Jester *cough cough*) my process with developing OCs usually focuses on them as a character individually first, then their relationships with canon characters after.

And at first, I thought the idea of Jamil x Kyra was interesting. My main reasoning for Kyra x Jamil was the idea of it.

Caged bird metaphors for days, both come from somewhat similar issues when it comes to not being allowed to be their own person, ect ect. (Also, if you couldnt tell already im a SUCKER for Opposites Attract and Grumpy x Sunshine)

In a way, I liked it because they were so similar yet so different lorewise, having this strict set of expectations put unto them and not being able to act against those expectations— but yet, despite how similar they are, they ended up completely different.

And while it is a good trope— It just simply doesn’t work. Why? Well, because Jamil, putting it bluntly, isn’t the kind of person that would be best for Kyra. (ITS OKAY!!! HES STILL BIG BRO!!!!! I saved him from a neverending headache w Kyra LMFAOO)

I started to take into consideration Kyra herself. What kind of person would she want? How does she love? What kind of person would she be attracted to? What does she need in someone? Who would make her happy?

after having to bottle up all her feelings and ignoring her own desires and wants— Kyra needs someone that would support her.

She doesn’t need nor wants someone to stop her from doing the things that she does, what she needs is someone to support her. And I doubt that Jamil would be supportive of her shennanigans LMAOO 😭

Then I got to thinking, if not Jamil who else could I ship her with ??

Then I realized, “Oh, Floyd would be perfect, wouldn’t he?”

Now, Floyd has always been my favorite character from TWST! But I just didnt want to be biased and miss out on good ship material with another character😭 funny how it worked out though WHAHAHA

Not only would Floyd support her shennanigans— he’d encourage her to do it. And while that probably isn’t the best in some cases, Kyra definetly deserves someone that would support her actual wants after all this time.

I mentioned this before, but Kyra sees alot of herself in Floyd. Yeah, they are weirdly similar (and that actually was not planned), and thats exactly the reason why Kyra was ever attracted to Floyd in the first place. (In general, not even romantically lmao)

And seeing him show all of these traits without a care in the world, to act out on what he feels and what he wants, it encourages her to do the same. And it encourages her to be herself even more, which is exactly what she needs!

There are still times Kyra is hesitant to do things, old habits die hard, but Floyd just being himself is enough to encourage Kyra to do the same. He influences her in a way others view as “bad”, but for someone like Kyra, its honestly the best for her.

Not only that, but I personally see Floyd as the kind of person to not really care about looks. Yeah, he can see when someone’s attractive and he acknowledges it, but he really does not care 😭

In my opinion, he values personality much more. Anyone who can entertain him or whoever he deems “fun”.

Kyra has never been seen for anything other than her beauty. Always seen but never heard. And while Floyd does think shes pretty… He really didn’t care about that when they first met LMAOO

It would be refreshing for Kyra to have someone who actually didn’t care all that much for her appearance. Instead hanging out with her for her personality. She was so used to men always sticking by her because of her pretty face that it was a breath of fresh air when she realized that Floyd wasn’t like that, and they were just genuinely friends.

The fact that Floyd doesnt care about appearances at all shouldn’t really be a big deal, but Kyra would be OVER THE MOON about it.

“Ah, I don’t care about that sorta thing. If you were boring, I would’ve ditched you a long time ago, hahaha!” And now suddenly Kyra is swooning and fanning herself and getting weak in the knees and blushing and giggling and kicking her feet and twirling her hair and—💥💥💥

Kyra needs a best friend in a partner. Someone that makes her want to open up and be vulnerable, but also makes her loosen up and have fun. She needs someone that can support her and can keep up with her regardless of how chaotic and rambunctious she can get— and who better than the menace himself??

No one can keep up with Kyra. And no one can really keep up with Floyd, either (Well, besides Jade, that is.). It was perfect! Because turns out, they’re the only ones that can keep up with eachother.

While continuing to think on it, I began realizing that they were also similar in other ways! And they can definetly understand eachother because of it.

Two people who have never had anyone bother to even try and understand them, no one really trying to look underneath the surface. Thinking that because of that, they dont “need” anyone to. But when they find eachother?? AUGH, they realize it really does feel nice for someone to “get it”.

Floyd understands and encourages Kyra in a way I don’t think Jamil could, and so !!! Floyra became a thing!!! YIPPEEYIPPEYIPPEEEE !!!!

My perfect little weirdos, even if no one really gets them they understand eachother better than anyone else can, and thats all that really matters. Their similarities in personality and ideals that brought them together, and I’m really just a sucker for the whole soulmates thing 😭

While of course, there are definetly flaws— with Kyra’s secretive nature and both of them being somewhat afraid of opening up and being vulnerable, its also because of those flaws that they end up working together. Because for once, they found someone that can truly understand them, and they’d be damned to let them slip away.

I am such a sucker for characters experiencing kindness after being hurt for so long…and I bet Bruce ‘Consent is Sexy’ Wayne does too, the man *is* a professional white knight. Like yes Mister Wayne, stroke my face and tell me I’m pretty, compliment my intelligence randomly and not just to love bomb me like my crime lord ex-husband, kiss me soft before you kiss me hard. Bruce would treat you with kindness regardless, but there’s something that really pulls him in about the way you look at him every time he does or says something nice…maybe because he knows you’ve never looked at someone else like that. The way you’re trying not make it obvious that you’re desperate for his touch is certainly something - don’t worry baby, he’s not gonna make you chase or work for anything. And even though he doesn’t care about this stupid rivalry as much as Roman does, he does feel a little victory knowing that he doesn’t need need to drug you to get you excessively wet and babbling.

I will say, the transition of being in your first ‘good’ relationship after a long term unhealthy one, for me at least, does contain those little moments.

My bf occasionally likes to bring up how for like the first 2 years of our relationship, and sometimes even to date, he’ll catch me looking at him in awe for offering me basic human decency. Just opening doors, or helping me carry my bags.

If I’d realise I’d been talking for a long time I’d stop and apologise, and he’d be like “no, no, no I like when you talk, I want to hear what you have to say.” And that was so fucking weird to me.

im a huge sucker for Real Time Combat but I will never get behind thinking its the natural evolution of Turn Based Combat. What!! these are different styles!!! i genuinely think the turn based influence is explicitly what MAKES FF7s real time combat INCREDIBLE for me. without it, it would be just a kind-of mid action game.

FF16 just has me thinking about that and it kind of reminds me of how we had a 2D platformer drought for a while because of 3D being seen as inherently better but we've ALREADY gone through the whole loop of realizing these are two different styles with pros and cons to those. The thought that goes into designing both styles vary greatly and they both accomplish different things.

like, being able to just mash X and kill a guy in real time is not inherently better than carefully strategizing and experimenting to kill a guy in a couple turns!! these are two unique stances in gameplay with strengths and weaknesses and its weird to see one treated as better. and i admit, im a fucking sucker for real time, i like at least some real time elements in most game's combat, but i think FF7R's combat is incredible BECAUSE it's not just purely real-time. You can swap around, go through menus, plan stuff!! its such a cool synthesis!! Real Time Combat can offer the thrill of really BEING in combat, dodging and weaving, getting gritty with your foe, but Turn Based allows you to strategize and plan and have MUCH easier access to a potentially HUGE arsenal of moves without having to fiddle with menus while you're scrambling to avoid getting hit. These styles are different and can bring a lot to the other, but acting like one is somehow better beyond just preference is very silly to me.

When you play a game with turn-based combat that sucks, know that it's probably because the balancing/design itself is not fun, not the actual genre. Super Lesbian Animal RPG has no real-time elements at all in combat, but it's some of the most engaging and fun and well-balanced turn-based combat I've had the pleasure of experiencing. And it has a deep focus on teamwork and friendship, and I think that's genuinely very hard to instill in Real-Time games because the player is forced to control only one character at a time in linear, progressively flowing time. I love KHII, but it rarely feels like you're working together because aside from your Limit attacks, you can't really collaborate with your party members or strategize. It's still a FANTASTIC game that I love playing, but the element of teamwork is lacking in comparison to a turn-based game, like, say, Bug Fables, which has you control all three members of Team Snakemouth. It allows you to have a myriad of attacks and moves that all influence each other, and because you can control all members, it feels really good and rewarding! And you all feel like friends, not just in cutscenes, but explicitly in gameplay because teamwork is highly incentivized to make things work!

i guess if ur a dev or just someone who appreciates games remember that there's no objectively better style for gameplay; it's all about context!! what is the GOAL of combat? What choices does it have the player make? Would one style work over the other for achieving this goals? That's how you pick what style you want to use! That's how you can analyze why or why not a game's style is working for you! rghaGHHHH GAME DEVELOPMENT IS COOL ARRHGHGHGHHGFJG

Essentially AU where Sandor doesn’t leave at BoTBB and Sandor bargains with Sansa for her body to take her across the narrow sea to safety. I can’t do the story justice. It sounds bad when I describe it. But Sansa is so so soooooo sweet and eager and Sandor is like. It’s hard to describe bc he could totally be triggering to some, but it’s very evident that he cares so deeply for her health, her safety, her happiness, but on the surface? Fuckin asshole. A real Sweet and Smol girl with HUGE SCARY DOG PRIVILEGES dynamic. With some excellent plot, too, that feels very-in-world.

There’s some big loss of virginity, dubcon, and some kiiiinky ass shit here (respectfully) but genuinely love love love this depiction of Sandor. He’s so loving, but also so rough, and he cares so much. I’m trash I know I’m sorry I’m sorry.

The author truly takes my breath away. The writing is so immersive, so catered for the reader, so vivid. It reads so naturally, like the author is painting a picture for you. Also madly in love with Pate, Sandor’s squire. What a cutie patootie. I’ll buy 4, thanks.

For Rent by Gendervny of course I got rep the fucking homie! My beloved @theeironprice wrote this fuckin thramsay masterpiece (it’s ongoing). I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t genuinely love it. Now, a fair warning, it is not for everyone. Definitely pay attention to the tags, because this author does not fuck around. The dove’s not dead but. It ain’t sleeping. Ifykyk. (It’s a compliment I promise)

This fuckin gem is so near and dear to my heart. It is a 2004 au with some amazing pop culture references sprinkled in as a little treat for the reader. It’s like the author leaves M&Ms on each page for u to go “OOH CANDY” And it gives u a little shot of dopamine every time I promise you. It’s actually what inspired this doodle of Sansa and Arya I did that you dorks seem to love so much and it makes me microwave all of these characters on fucking repeat in the year 2004. As a 2000s kid, like, this hits so hard. So close to home in the best way possible. And once you read about Theon listening to the Smiths, it just becomes canon to you. Of fucking course Theon listens to The Smiths. What a fucking loser.

A harmless addiction by rummy_cat is just stupid fun. Point blank. Yeah, it’s a sansan modern au. Look, I’m not a modern au person. I truly am not. So if I’m recommending it, it’s worth a read. Sansa is a 20-something who purchased a piece of shit house and is way over her head with her HGTV dreams. Sandor is a poor-bedside-manner, 3-stars-out-of-five on Angie’s list handy man���who also does in-story-equivalent of Onlyfans on the side. Now imma be real with you. I’m a sucker for a romcom cliche. If there’s a meet-cute, or a situation where they’re forced to share one bed, or anything else you can picture happening in a stupid straight to dvd Katherine heigl movie? Say less im already there.

So this is one of those fics that you genuinely don’t even need to know wtf is happening in the asoiaf world like at all. It would be a lovely standalone romcom book. It helps if you know who the main players are like Sansa, Sandor, Podrick, Bronn and Arya, but everyone is kind of a loose caricature. Usually I can’t stand this shit. But they’re so endearing, and written with so much heart and humanity and it genuinely feels like a HBO style romcom sitcom thing with a lot of situational humor. Also like??? Sandor is so endearing. Handyman Sandor and sweet little shut in with a secret potty mouth and a (very mild) porn addiction Sansa is to die for. And the first sex scene? Hysterical. But also hot. And bronn IS SO CUTE AS COMEDIC RELIEF. also gotta rep my man Tony the Italian who literally only shows up for like 3 paragraphs as situational humor narrative fodder and I would genuinely lay my life on the line to protect that man. I actually haven’t finished this one so I have no idea how it ends but genuinely you will be hanging on every chapter. The author is so engaging.

Cw for dubcon bc well they’re both drunk and there’s some very tasteful feet stuff (if you know me, I am NOT a feet-stuff person. Periodt.) a lovely quick little horny read where Sandor pushes Sansa’s boundaries (consensually) and they are just so sexually compatible with one another. It’s very sweet. Some really lovely horny visuals surrounding period-accurate attire (I am a SUCKER for period accurate attire)

What I love the most about it is that it’s not framed like “character A does things to character B” nah. While Sandor may be doing the bulk of the “work” 👀 the reader gets to see an equal amount of Sandor’s enjoyment as Sansa’s. I love a dynamic where partners get off to their partner enjoying themselves bc it just feels so realistic. Like have you ever been with someone you care for deeply? That their enjoyment fuels your enjoyment, sexual or platonic. That shit is REAL. this author is a PAINTER.

Nine nights by Sarah C this. Was. Soooooo. Much. FUN. It’s a “oops we’re snowed in at an inn and we have to share a room with one bed what r we gonna dooooooo????” trope that is a huge romp and a half. I loved how realistic this was. I love how the author included real life details that are period accurate. Gross little details that aren’t “gross,” but every day real life things! For example, there is a scene where Sandor falls asleep before Sansa and she’s staring at him and just kinda disappointed bc she’s romanticized everything around her and Sandor is just so real. A Tough hide and a tender heart is a lovely little samsa quick read that is rated G and only 800+ words. It was the fic that was attributed to my samsa doodle. I don’t really ship it, but it was so so sooooo cute to think about. This fic is essentially Samwell Tarly being just so fucking sweet as usual. Just a complete gentleman. To Sansa at the Wall. Nothing even truly happens. It’s just Sam being a perfect fucking gentleman and admiring on Sansa. Honestly will give even most hardened assholes sweet little butterflies in their belly. Like I say, not even my ship, but it’s just genuinely so cute.

And I CANNNNNNNN NOT for the fuckin life of me find this fic that tells the “real story” of how the Vale was won. It’s a total “Yeah, Visenya fucked MILF GOAT Sharra Arryn and that’s how Visenya got the Vale to surrender” fic that was. P E A K. but for whatever reason, it’s wiped from my browser history.

Did they ever tackle how the other dorm leaders reacted to the whole anemone issue during the Octavinelle arc? Like i know Riddle wasn't happy when he found out that ADeuce got into a contract with Azul and have to serve him since they failed to complete their deal but I dont think we got Leona's reaction to what happened to his dormmates since Im pretty sure I saw Savanaclaw npcs among the anemones. Like were they unaware or did they decide "let them face the consequences"?

Nope, we pretty much only have Riddle and Leona’s perspectives on the anemone incident of book 3. I’m pretty sure the other dorm leaders were not ignorant about what had happened; Azul had 225 students out of a school of 800ish under his thumb, which would significantly impact the school’s ecosystem and would be hard to ignore. Besides, what dorm leader would ignore anemones suddenly sprouting on their students’ heads and NOT get to the bottom of things?

It’s not too hard to imagine that the other dorm leaders were none too pleased to find out the news but also didn’t intervene for whatever reason (be it “they deserve to face these consequences”, knowing that they can’t do anything about it, etc.). In all likelihood, it was probably done out of convenience for the writers and/or to keep the story centered on the initial characters. At this point in the main story, we haven’t met characters relevant to other dorms (like Epel in Pomefiore), so we’d really feel little attachment seeing generic mob students suffering as Vil chides them or whatever. We can still get emotionally invested because our personal friends, Adeuce and Grim, are in dire straits.

Of course, Riddle was NOT happy with the circumstances (how dumb do you have to be to make a contract with Azul?). According to Deuce in 3-7, he was scolded and made to write a paper to reflect.

Leona’s opinion, meanwhile, is moreso implied. In 3-16, he says that anyone that would willingly and repeatedly make contracts with Azul are stupid. Leona has also made deals with Azul, but it always came at a steep cost to himself so he tries to do so sparingly. However, Leona also continuously characterizes those who get suckered as “dumb” and “dim-witted”, implying he does not think highly of those who fall for Azul’s schemes. This leads me to think that Leona’s feelings err on “you made your bed, now go lie in it”.

But!! I think it’s possible that Leona’s motivation to dust Azul’s contracts threefold: eliminate his own contract with Azul, help Yuu and co. out (because they’re annoying him, lol), AND to free his (idiot) dorm members from Azul’s clutches. We’ve seen Leona act very similarly “selfless” (while operating to achieve his own goals) in book 2, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he continued this plotting in other books.

One thing I noticed while reviewing book 3; there are only anemone’d students from FOUR of the dorms: Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, Scarabia, and Pomefiore. Octavinelle, Ignihyde, and Diasomnia students were not reaped.

Now, it’s possible that this occurred due to limited game assets, as a similar issue occurred with the game showing beastmen mobs only in Savanclaw and in no other dorm. However, the manga debunked this quickly by showing beastmen in Heartslabyul and humans in Savanavlaw. I therefore decided to consult the manga to see if I could find Octavinelle, Ignihyde, or Diasomnia mobs among Azul’s anemones.

The Episode of Octavinelle manga depicts many mob students also indebted to Azul. It wasn’t that helpful since the pages are in black and white, making it difficult to know which dorms they belong to. However, we do see that Ignihyde students were anemone'd:

Do you think Azul didn’t bother with his own dorm members to maintain the image of being a trustworthy and kind dorm leader/senpai? Maybe the Diasomnia kids were too strong-willed to fall for his schemes? Or perhaps they really are among the count of anemones, but just not shown clearly in the game/manga. (I can’t see Azul passing up the opportunity to get more clients indebted to him, regardless of dorm affiliation, since getting enough students of one dorm under him could grant him leverage with the dorm leader to get them back www)

You know thinking about it, I realized I like to think Larry’s whole personality is just based on Starr Park. Like his whole life, his whole thing and character are just rules, rules, rules, and Starr Park. I mean he’s kind because he’s supposed to represent Starr Park and the fact he is the ticket man means he has to show a smile and a good personality as he is like the face of it when you enter it while Lawrie doesn’t because as you know he doesn’t do the tickets but more so over dealing with the rule breakers. (The rule breaker thing could also apply to Larry because that’s his job at Starr Park which is a cop.) He’s the one loving the rules because it keeps things in order and you know that he has to protect the theme park and in order to protect it, it has to be in order with no like weird or violent things happening around. I always have to remind myself that they’re robots created by Starr Park, their job is for Starr Park, their life, and their purpose centers around Starr Park. No matter what or how you think of him, Larry will always be centered around Starr Park. It’s so silly but interesting too, he’s nothing but just a code implanted in a machine. He’s not supposed to have feelings, he’s supposed to be a professional at his job and that’s all. You can’t just slap a headcanon onto him because it wouldn’t make sense like what do you mean he bakes for fun? (No offense) you have to think about characters as a whole and thinking about it, Larry’s whole thing about you know what makes it special for me. GRRRRRRRR I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHHHHHH. Also, the fact he is a robot is so smart, that means he doesn’t need to eat, drink, or sleep at all. Middle of the night thoughts: im always going to be a sucker for the "character who seems averse to romance falling first" idea. Which is why I truly think Gajeel catching feelings for Levy first on his path of redemption would've been the superior choice. The idea of a formee villain who is only beginning to properly figure out friendship realizing one of those people he's befriending strikes a cord in a way the others don't.

Now as I was thinking about this, I was struck with the question "do we ever see a man in fairy tail fall first and pursue the romance?" I don't mean something like Lyon where he falls for juvia and nothing blooms between them. I mean genuine reciprocal romance where the guy is the one who has to wait or act first.

Cause I don't know if we ever do. It's common in shoujo for it to happen and honestly when it's done well it sticks in my brain and makes me giddy. But I feel like every fairy tail romance follows the same pattern and it's part of why most couples don't work for me.

Guy and girl meet and start off on rocky terms

Guy proves himself to be a hero by saving the girl and the girl blushes as she thinks he's cool and realizes she might be into him.

Girl gets jealous and indignant when guy is oblivious to her feelings and is friendly at all with other women.

Several scenes with misunderstandings are written in for drama and comedy as we play up how overdramatic a woman can be.

Guy realizes down the line he's into the other woman who becomes much more subdued when romanced.

It's a repetitive pattern. It's really disappointing because Mashima has decent concepts for couples that could be fleshed out in interesting ways if done right. Juvia and Gray could've been a slow burn due to Juvia figuring herself out beyond romance and Gray only falling for her when her true personality shines through without the veneer of romance (fjord and jester from critical role are a great example of this. Though juvia and Gray are not perfect parallels to them.) Gajeel and Levy could've been a slow burn enemies to lovers where Gajeel has to first prove himself as a decent person before Levy even considers a friendship with him and we focus on then finding common ground and working well as a team to build the bond (honestly beauty and the beast would be the best example of things for them, though again not a perfect parallel to my own vision.) Jellal and erza could've focused on the difficulties of forgiveness when the one you care for betrays you and how that can change a bond over time and the difficulties of moving forward from that. It could focus on the complexities of the feelings they have for each other and not just had them immediately fall back into some kind of romance with little to no build up. (I don't have a comparison for this. But these two move way too fast for me to enjoy them in canon)

Mavis and Zeref should've been a full will they won't they that ends with they won't because the circumstances of their lives won't allow it. A continuous dance and bond that would've lent so well to tension in scenes where they interact and tinged their moments with sadness and bittersweet longing.

There are so many ways to flesh out the romances in the series without constantly reusing the same formula with alterations barely made based on the personalities of the women. People who enjoy fairy tail claim romance is the one thing Mashima does well, but as a romance fan I have to say I don't think a single couple in fairy tail was well executed. I do love several of them, but that doesn't mean they were well written.

anyways I like the theory! My thoughts are very disorganized rn so lemme just list some random stuff off, feel free to ask for specification and clarification!

So I personally think that the Mr fox stuff is more symbolic than anything? I don’t really think he himself actually did it? But I’m also not against the idea, and it makes sense. But so far there’s not much in the canon of the games themselves to imply that he did it, at the very least it wasn’t him alone who did it. But for the most part there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that he actually did it, and I like the thought! But I’m holding off on saying anything definite until we get further information. I do think however no matter what it is, it’s symbolism for who Wooly is as a character and how that effects how he is with traumatic events (I can definitely explain this because I’m actually not saying anything negative about him, it’s more sad if anything :( ) and more importantly how his monster works and how it works in tandem with how Amanda’s entity(s) works. (plural since I think there may be something more “possessing” Amanda then just her Monster, at the very least I think that her creature is just a small piece of a larger puzzle if that makes sense, this could also apply to Wooly?? But uh- that’s a whole other thing im not gonna get into it)

2. As my twin already said, even if it’s symbolic or not it’s proof on Wooly being forced to do awful things entirely against his will, and that says a whole lot about him, his relationship with Amanda, and Hameln as a whole.

literally a guy who makes everything about himself and his own small little world. if curly focuses on the big picture and anya on the details, then jimmy can't see beyond his square in the screen. in terms of writing and execution, i especially love the diatribe he goes on with anya about "all the stuff he has to do now that he's captain" and it's literally like five things and they're tasks that take at most five minutes to complete. haha. just like. i really, really love swansea's speech and the music that plays beneath it. i don't think the fandom talks enough about it. it's also really interesting to me that his main regret at the end of the road was that he couldn't save daisuke. not that he couldn't help anya. not do both, just that he couldn't save the kid.

i also wonder about the game's diegetic and non-diegetic elements. as i played through it, i'm convinced that anything in red, anything bookmarked with "take responsibility" is non-diegetic. which raises some really interesting thoughts for the game's end. maybe jimmy didn't even get curly into the cryopod. maybe they're all dead at the end, curly succumbing to his wounds and jimmy starving. ooh, it's a spicy take-a.

the burning bush/curly scene is, however, not a spicy take to say it's non-diegetic, but i still wonder what the game is trying to communicate here. i say burning bush because that's the imagery my mind goes to, but it doesn't.......fit? not really? that puts curly as the word of god and jimmy as moses, which uhh i don't think so. but what else could we be hearkening? speaking of religious imagery, the sacrificial lamb/eucharistic consumption of blood and flesh. very clear. but lol why?

i need to sit down and really think through the vintage cartoon clips shown throughout the game. first, in terms of what cartoons are selected and why, why those cartoons are juxtaposed against each other, and why they appear in the game when they do. i'm particularly struck by the "make mine freedom" clip's appearance. the cartoon is as far as i know about the empty promises of populism and the shady hucksters who pedal it. my first introduction to the cartoon was through this video by carlos maza on anti-politics. give it a watch! it's really good.

another thing that stands out is that first clip about working for a profitable company. one, because we don't know if pony express is even a profitable company lol. and two, because a lot of the privileges working class folks were offered when that cartoon was produced and released was undergirded by strong institutions, such as the unions and state taxes. it's also interesting that the accident that appears that ultimately hurts our pov character happens at home by a child. there's some irony here, some misdirection, but i need to sit with it more to uncover the reasons Why.

the mid-century aesthetics of the tulpar are endlessly fascinating to me. im also just a huge sucker for "new thing against old background" or, in this case, "old thing against new background." the mixing of generations is really neat to me. did anyone pick up that the wallpaper in the lounge is very The Shining-esque?

why wasn't anya on birth control? i don't mean this in a "why were you wearing that" kind of way. i mean, if you're going to be in the vast empty vacuum of space for upwards of a year, why would you want to deal with fertility? even in our very unsophisticated era of the 21st century, hormonal iuds are (relatively) easy to insert (vaginally or in the arm) and they last for years. a not insignificant number of women on hormonal iuds don't even get periods at all, or if they do, it's a lot less of a mess than it could be, but most importantly, you don't ovulate on them. the doyalist answer is "she needs to be fertile for the story to happen," but i'd really love to dig into a watsonian explanation. it lends itself to the mid-century aesthetic i think.

RUKI MUKAMI

Shockingly enough, Ruki doesn't seem to mind when you interrupt his evening readings. At least not too much. Even he is not immune to the leisure he's endowed when conversing with his little sister. Your voice was truly an anomaly; so sweet and comforting. With the way his brothers act, he hardly believes he's related to you.

Ruki will place you in any extracurriculars that involve you using your voice. Public speaking, singing, whatever you'd like. There's no reason for something too helpful to go to waste as it could get you quite far in your life. If that doesn't interest you then so be it, he has no problem spending the rest of his evenings basking in the sweet sound of his sister's voice. Although Ruki won't tell you that.

“Hm, it seems that you're home early. Come, tell me about your day, I'll be happy to listen. 'Out of character' you say? Haah, it'd be best to ignore it.”

KOU MUKAMI

There is no one more in love with your voice than Kou himself. He insists you come to all his concerts and sing a duet with him. Even if you lack the ability to sing, it doesn't sound any less charming to those listening. Kou swears he could listen to you talk forever! (Which is probably true)

Not to mention you're absolutely adorable! If he had the opportunity he'd probably squeeze you to death. When his fans see the two of you on stage, they're practically gushing over you (they can't have you though). Seeing their favorite idol and his sibling standing side by side is a sight for the ages.

“Eh, the song's over already? C'mon~, just one more, pleaseee~! That one was way too short and I want to hear you sing one more time.”

YUMA MUKAMI

Okay, your voice is pretty but do you know how to pick weeds from the garden? I jest; Yuma is another victim of the dulcet hums resonating in your chest. Usually, Yuma would grow rather annoyed when interrupted during his pastimes, but he like any other enjoys hearing you ramble on about your day.

Begging of any kind gets to him pretty quickly and that voice of yours speeds up the process. After all, who is he to resist his sister's charms? This man is a sucker for puppy dog eyes of any kind so don't worry about overusing them. With a cute face like yours, I'm sure it'll be easy!

“The hell 're you lookin' at me for? Move before I put ya' to work. Fine, fine, I won't so quit your whinin'!”

AZUSA MUKAMI

As one would expect, Auzsa is nothing short of grateful for your voice. Restless nights seem to plague him a lot less, his anxiety subsiding in your presence. When you greet him grinning from ear to ear, shouting, "Hi big brother!" his life feels complete.

Clingy doesn't begin to describe his behavior towards you. This man is practically glued to your side. It's hard to believe you're the baby of the family when Azusas around, he beats you by a l ong shot. He's just happy to be in your presence, listening to you even if you aren't talking to him. It's endearing, hm?

“Aah, can you repeat that? I heard you...It's just...I'd like to hear you say it again. Can you? Just....this once?”
