HI GUYS MY FIRST ART POST

since i have no clue what kind of art to post on here yet i decided to do something fun!!!

I'll be designing and drawing every single cat in the into the wild allegiances, hopefully uploading each day! yeah im only doing into the wild (for now) cause i would like to stay alive and breathing thanks!

also designing ISNT WHAT IM BEST AT, these are just for fun!

im gonna start explaining and babbling about the designs now,,

firepaw is TECHNICALLY not the first cat in the allegiances but come on i have to do him first he's FIREPAW. I didn't have much of a thought process for him other than mmmmm yes fire. I really wanted to add some blue to his eyes cause like, blue fire haha but i couldn't find a way to do that without making the whole design look weird.

Next is bluestar! bluestar with long hair my beloved. i tried to make her as BLUE as possible without making your eyes burn off, but she is VERY BLUE

Now for redtail! this one was a bit more tricky to be honest, i wasn't too sure of what to do because, i sorta forgot how i perceived redtail lmao?? most of what i was thinking while designing him was.....hmm spottedleaf brother...... of course he has his signature red tail, and i wanted to give him that sort of calico kinda hair color, like how people dye their hair to be calico yeah i was going for that. like he dyed his hair but it's actually just like that.

And lastly, spottedleaf! i think you all can clearly see the neapolitan inspiration here lol. I was thinking of how i was gonna design her, and a lightbulb lit up above my head and went ICE CREAM ICE CREAAMMM so here's neapolitan spottedleaf! i also this these colors make her look like she smells good which is a trait of hers i guess, like look at that cat and tell me she doesnt look like she smells like vanilla and strawberries and chocolate. I also made an effort to have spottedleaf and redtail to resemble or mirror eachother! that'll probably become a pattern with the siblings I'll be designing.

also side note, literally i drew these with a pencil on paper, lined it with black paint and a stiff paintbrush and THEN transferred the drawing into ibispaint. just wanted to put it out there...heh... probably one of my new favorite ways of drawing ever.

I'm gonna be using the #into the wild allegiances to tag all of these in case you wanna find them all later.

man im glad kabru put his sword down n acknowledged hes no good w monsters. He hurt himself so much trying to be a person hes not… dying over n over again… becoming so good at killing people in the service of that goal n it gets him no closer to it… and i dont think dungeon life is actually what he wants either… he had such a miserable time but i feel the people he met…was the journey. Maybe. I think theres something moving about him venturing out n meeting ppl from all walks of life.

And a life of many more…and i may be about to do a horrific misreading but i always thought part of the reason kabru got namari n toshiro to go w him instead of his own party was trying to keep em outta harms way esp rin. But in turn he cut himself off of his closest connections while interacting w ppl who bring up really bitter memories for him. Man kabru n rins relationship… they dont love each other in the same way but u can tell theyre always thinking of each other. Like interacting w the canaries is hard for him. But also on another level he may have taken them bc they do in fact live up to his idealized version of ppl who can effortlessly slay monsters n its something he knows he lacks. But idk if being good at slayin monsters particularly helped in the end of that situation tho it was good to have a few ppl good at it on retainer. Kinda bummed they cut out of a lot of kabrus interactions w namari and shuro bc i do find them interesting in the short moments they interact. Thats the b team (w mithrun acting as the antag of it so he flits in and out)

Like kabru has a moment of vulnerability in telling his own story to them honestly. It was hard for him. And if they cut out namaris genuine moment of unconditional kindness when she reaches out for kabru while everyones trampling over each other and hes having a ptsd moment ill be at their doors. I think it was a pretty vital moment in reminding him why he feels so strongly abt autonomy. I feel kabru very rarely gets acknowledged for his kindness often no string attached. N ppl are much quicker to note hes manipulative n a charmer but i think some of these moments he just likes listening to ppl some of whom have never been listened to in their lives…. Its sad how much kabrus willing to accommodate others n give em grace n yet he wont give it to himself : ( But also that those two were genuinely moved by his moment of vulnerability and even tho theyre mainly there for their frat bro allegiance towards laios where theyre like idc if he did that #freemyman, i do think what pushed them over the threshold is thinking about what he said about the elves trampling everyone and how they trampled over this delicate infrastructure ppl built for their livelihood . I like to think their lil turn everyone against the canaries was them pouring one out for him. Carry his dream on a little bit longer bc they dunno if he survived. I found it like aw. That all his like kabrus been trying to carry a mountain on his back, trying so hard to be a manipulative charming person to that end, but he can move ppl just as he is. By being open n vulnerable .

the last survivor of utaya… but is just surviving enough? Think its good he makes a new home in melani so that he can move onto the next part of his life while keeping every place hes ever been close. A dungeon that wiped out all life. A dungeon that created a new one

Note before I start: I’m making this take place in the old forest territories from arc 1 because this is basically just a copy of the second arc HXNSHSNSJSJ and it’d make more sense for their long journey to the ocean to take multiple months rather than just a few days like it would if they were in the new lake territories, so alas, no Skyclan in this AU- Only Thunderclan, Windclan, Shadowclan and Riverclan

OK ok so this AU starts BEFORE the actual story starts with Smokesun (Luis); Windclans only medicine cat. He is, obviously, very well-liked amongst his clanmates and he’s got a particularly strong bond with Starclan and receives pretty clear visions from them as a result (Starclan is like Cat Heaven and Cat Gods and Medicine cats are the only cats who can communicate with them)

So when Smokepaw (he’s still an apprentice at this point) receives a VERY SCARY vision from Starclan telling him that a sickness is cursed to ravish their clan, he obviously panics and tells everyone, and IMMEDIATELY begins working on a cure with guidance from Starclan

,,,,,,,,Only that cure DOES NOT work and in fact makes them become sicker EVEN FASTER. Some cats question whether he was even getting visions from Starclan in the first place or whether he was receiving them from the Dark Forest (evil cat hell where Bad Cats go)

SO when Smokepaw/sun starts getting punishing visions from Starclan so horrible to the point they have him physically coiling on the ground the clans like. Yep!! He fucked up!!!! He needs to be punished!!!!!

And ofc Smokesun does NOT wanna be punished and he also wants to escape Starclans visions so he. Runs away from Windclan off into the wilderness never to be seen again (If a med cat goes outside of clan territories they loose their connection to starclan and can’t receive visions from them)

So with their only medicine cat gone and their clan slowly dying from a mysterious illness, Windclan shut themselves off from the rest of the clans and don’t ask anyone for help (because this is Warrior Cats babey!!!!) and the other clans just go. Oh ok. They’re probably plotting a war or something. Let’s leave them alone.

And it’s against the code for other Medicine Cats to talk about insider Medicine Cat stuff with the rest of their clan so even though the other clans med cats notice Smokesun is missing, they’re not allowed to say anything

That is until Badgerpaw, Thunderclans medicine cat, (our beloved Rebecca Chambers) spills the beans to Thunderclans leader (presumably President Graham in this AU AGABSGEBEYDNSHXJ) that oooOoOoOoO a spOoooOoOoOoky evil medicine cat cursed Windclan and that’s why they’re sick!!!!! But because this is warrior cats the leader doesn’t say anything so moons pass and nothing really happens

Then we FINALLY cut to where like, the ‘main story’ starts- Lionfur (Leon) isn’t Thunderclans DEPUTY but he’s definitely a high-ranking warrior and as such mr leader president Grahamstar tells him first that his daughter, Ashpaw, has come down with a mysterious illness oOoOoOoOooOOoooo and Badgerheart (now a full medicine cat) suspects that it’s the same illness Windclan got from that super scary super evil medicine cat.

This is all obviously FRESH NEWS to Lionfur cuz the leader hasn’t told ANYONE abt this and it’s ESPECIALLY WORRYING cuz Ashpaw is more like a lil sibling to Lionfur in this AU (just for the sake of making the au make sense please don’t spin this BXBHSSNS) so he’s a liiiiiiil more understanding when the leaders like “ok. Now I need you to go outside clan territories and travel for MIIIIIIIIIIIILES to find a cure and reach the ocean and find that evil medicine cat. May starclan light your path lmao. Oh also Badgerheart got a vision that the ocean is where you’ll find the cure and we need to bring that evil medicine cat back so that they can repent but Badgerheart has to stay here so there aren’t any plot holes lmao”

So Lionfur is about to set off to god knows where on a god knows how dangerous mission when Ashpaw is like “:DDDDDD hey hi hello I’m coming with you!!!!!!!” And Lionfurs like “??????WTF NO YOU'RE NOT YOU'RE SICK????????” But It’s already too late so he begrudgingly let’s her tag along

Along the way after they’ve made it past clan territories, they somehow stumble across a mysterious cat who understands their clan language!!!!! He introduces himself as Smokesun and he knows an oddly large amount of knowledge about herbs and medicine and the territories outside of the clans and he’s also just so handsome and so charming and hey he’s a sweetheart to Ashpaw and I mean shucks they need somebody with proper herb knowledge to join them anyways so he tags along!!!! (Lionfur probably wouldn’t recognise him cuz Smokesun was only an apprentice when he left and also Medicine cats from other clans don’t usually interact with other clan cats)

So the three of them go on wild and whacky adventures together and I imagine if this was a warriors book this is where the main story would take place!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t have anything in mind but I imagine they’d probably have to fight against rogue groups (maybe a stand in for so Illuminados idk they’re not really relevant in this au) or giant dogs (again maybe Krauser) all while laughing and having fun and growing closer and oh god is Lionfur falling in love with this total looser from the middle nowhere he knows nothing about?????? He totally is!!!!!!!!!!!

But along their journey, Lionfur starts to notice some,,,,,,, weird stuff happening. Like, Smokesun will randomly double over and claw at his head but then sit up a few seconds later saying he’s totally fine (he’s not my boy is cursed with The Visions still!!!!!!!!! He’s being forced by starclan to feel what his Windclan clan mates are feeling!!!) and Ashley’s only getting sicker and sicker so they need to REALLY get a move on and reach the ocean sooner or later and find this damn mysterious evil medicine cat!!!!

Also I’m not sure where else to slot this in but Ada’s important to this au too ofc!!!!!!!!! When Smokesun first left Windclan he had no clue how to fend for himself and Ada managed to find him almost half mangled so she picked him up and helped him but they kept accidentally crossing paths and every single time Smokesun looked worse and worse (those damn visions amirite) so she taught him how to find specific herbs thatd help and he realised oh!!!!! I can make a suppressant from these!!!!!!!!!! So he dedicated ALL of his time to making a proper suppressant for Windclan (all the while. Y’know. Experimenting on himself and clawing his chest open and giving himself god knows what. Y’know. Classic Luis body horror shit amirite)

But he was too afraid to go back to the clans and give it to them himself so Ada would trot over there and drop them off for him and leave before anyone could see her (they probably thought it was a gift from starclan or something BDNEHWNEJSJ)

And that’s basically how Ashpaw didn’t just straight up die throughout their journey cuz Smokesun knew where to find herbs to make the suppressants- also in a similar vein to the actual game, Ada kinda follows them around like a shadow and helps them before they can get in TOO much trouble (ie, scaring away dogs, knocking over dams etc etc)

ALSO also again idk where else to put it but I think it’s funny to note that Ada’s not a clan cat- she’s a rogue and thus she doesn’t believe in Starclan so she’s not ENTIRELY convinced Smokesun isn’t just. Slowly going insane ANSNHDNEHSNS

Everytime he gets a migraine and starts shouting about the dead cats in his head she’s just like “oh my GOD dude PLEASE just GO TO A V E T GODDAMNIT”

Anyways after a LONG while the three of them FINALLY get to the ocean but. There’s no magical starclan-guided cure there. And even worse????? Lionfur has come down with the same illness so ALL tensions are high at this point.

And Smokesun is SO FULL OF GUILT because he’s under the impression that he’s been cursed by starclan and so it’s HIS PRESENCE that’s making Starclans cure not show up but he can’t just. Run away from his problems and from Lionfur and Ashpaw like he normally does. Cuz y’know. They’re sick and he’s the only one who knows how to make a suppressant.

So he has to very woefully admit to Lionfur that HES the mysterious evil medicine cat they’ve been looking for and he’s the one that “cursed” them. And obviously. Lionfur is PIIIIIIISSSEDD. But Ashpaw sick and so is he and none of them can leave the ocean so they all just kinda. Have to sit in a cave and talk about their emotions.

Lionfur and Smokesun have a Heart to heart and wowie just like in the base game Lionfur forgives Smokesun for his actions because he’s clearly so full of guilt and is doing everything in his power to save them yadda yadda yadda we all know how this goes anyways they kiss and make up and tell each other that they love each other but now they’ve got a NEW dhilemma cuz cats from seperate clans can’t be in a relationship and medicine cats are forbidden to be in a relationship but honestly?????? Lionfurs kinda considering just,,,,, not going back to the clans (after they drop Ashpaw home ofc)

Also hilarious to note that Ada is still hanging around watching all this go down like that scene in Brokeback mountain and she still delivers suppressants and herbs to the clans but every now and then she’ll poke her head up and be like “oh btw the warrior you sent out and your daughter are doing fine lmao” and the cats will be like???????? Wtf???????? Who are you?????????????? I can also imagine Badgerheart and Ada form a lil friendship over this too BXBDBNSBDSND

Anyways Smokesun realises EURIKA I CAN MAKE MEDICINE FROM THE SALT IN THE OCEAN (hey if a new prophecy did that plot point so can I) so he gathers up the medicine and makes it and voila!!!!!!! It works!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s not cursed after all Starclan are just cruel omnipotent gods!!!!!!!! So with Ada’s help they all race back to the clans and give them all the medicine and Ashpaw back everything is happy as Larry Wahoo

But. Y’know. Theres still the problem of. Smokesun. He doesn’t wanna go back to Windclan even after they’ve been healed for obvious reasons, and Lionfur realized he finds a whole lot more fulfillment in going on crazy adventures with Lionfur and by god he’s in love with that dumb cat too. So they all say their teary goodbyes to Ashpaw (and watch as she gets her Warrior status and her new name, Ashsun after Smokesun :,,,) ) and Smokesun and Lionfur run Off into the sunset never to be seen by the clans again but always in love and living their best gay kitty cat lives the end :))))))))

Lastly I think it would be HILARIOUS if Ada became the medicine cat of Windclan after Smokesun. Because she does NOT believe in starclan so whenever they’re like “OH NOOOOO THR CLOUDS ARE COVERING THE MOON WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!” She can shove poppy seeds in their mouths and tell them to shut the fuck up HDNHENEEJDJCUXJ

this is a part of a series im doing where i've made the full allegiances for the first book of every arc in order. now i'm making allegiances for other main series books. these will not be adherent to the changes with the new graphic novels

"canon" is in quotations because a lot of this is guesswork about who logically would be around at that point in time, but aren't listed in the allegiances or mentioned in the book

this is mainly meant to be a resource for fanworks

general stuff that's still the same as last time:

characters are listed by age. where there are no concrete ages, i make my best guess

tc is the only clan without a "kit" rank as all kits born into or taken into the clan have known parents

like last time, there's a lot of decisions to be made about prequel cats who just stop showing up. i'll be providing insight into why i believe that they're still around or not. check the previous fire and ice allegiances for more insights

thunderclan:

cinderpaw - still listed as fireheart's apprentice

brightkit, thornkit, and cloudkit - still listed as kits

snowkit and mistlekit - listed as mistlekit showed up (unnamed) in fire and ice, tho snowkit doesn't show up until rising storm, after mistlekit is implied to have died (tho she is also implied to have recovered from greencough lol). they probably would have been old enough to become apprentices around the same as like, cloudtail

goldenflower - she has tawnykit and bramblekit this book

shadowclan:

whitethroat, applefur, and ratscar - i have given them all their warrior names due to their appearances in tigerclaw's fury

snowbird - she does not show up in this arc at all but she is stated to be ratscar's littermate

rowankit and cedarkit (and lavenderkit) - rowanclaw is an apprentice in tigerclaw's fury (cedarheart and lavenderkit are not mentioned), so i had darkflower listed as (expecting kits) in the fire and ice allegiances. they do not become warriors until sometime after arc 1 so they were probably born in mid fire and ice, like ashfur and ferncloud. i've also removed their father scorchwind because his job is complete and he hasn't shown up since like, a blackfoot's reckoning flashback set in into the wild

volewhisper - due to continuity issues with blackfoot's reckoning, he needs to die before blackfoot reappears in shadowclan, but given that that doesn't happen until late FoS/early RS, i think it's fine that he's still around

stumpytail - he is one of the shadowclan exiles in tigerclaw's fury and blackfoot's reckoning but he is listed in the shadowclan allegiances for both FaI and FoS (while the shadowclanners are exiled) and appears in FoS as a clan cat, so i still have him listed within the clan. he also, of course, still has an apprentice in brownpaw

brownpaw - he does not show up in either tigerclaw's fury or blackfoot's reckoning, but he is still listed in both the forest of secrets and rising storm allegiances

all their non nightpelt and cinderfur elders are gone. none of them show up in forest of secrets (and really didn't show up in fire and ice) and some of them like featherstorm are shown in starclan during tigerclaw's leader ceremony in the ultimate guide. IF any of them show up alive again in the graphic novel i'll consider adding them back in bc them seemingly dying en masse after they just got their clan back is really weird and sad lol, esp since this is pre carrion sickness

other comments on tigerclaw's ceremony - dawncloud, tallpoppy, and darkflower are all hanging out in starclan beside cinderfur during tigerclaw's leader ceremony. obviously tallpoppy is alive as she is in arcs 2-4, but i guess dawncloud and darkflower could have both like, tripped and died between when they are seen in tigerclaw's fury before he goes to the moonstone and when they appear in his dreams

riverclan:

silverstream - she is tagged with (expecting kits) as she is, obviously, pregnant but is still a warrior as her pregnancy is secret

frogleap, woodkit, and robinkit - they die in the flood this book. mosspelt's litter is not born yet so robinkit and woodkit are never listed in an allegiances but they did briefly exist

mistyfoot - again, reedwhisker is not listed bc i've gone with the tnp timeline for him. her other kits are listed

silverpaw (not silverstream) - likely also dies in the flood? the last time they are ever mentioned, they are trying to keep a den from collapsing alongside shadepaw/shadepelt the first. silverpaw stops showing up in the allegiances after this book while shadepaw and heavypaw continue to do so

greenflower - it's semi-canon that she dies of greencough shortly after giving birth, so she will not reappear again

rippleclaw and emberdawn - disappear after nightstar's first gathering as a leader

windclan:

stagleap and sorrelshine - per onestar's confession, they've rejoined windclan. this could happen later but i just chose to put them back in the clan now. given that pigeonflight does not show back up, he has been disappeared

tawnykit/tawnyfur - like i mentioned in the fire and ice allegiances, she is a kit because she becomes an apprentice in rising storm and a warrior in dangerous path. she is older than gorsepaw, and should definitely be an apprentice already because of the tight timeline between RS and DP, but her mentor tornear still has an apprentice in runningpaw at the start of FoS. it does definitely seem like she's in a background shot in the graphic novel alongside webpaw or runningpaw, but this is just a guess

crowfur - he's an elder who speaks at a gathering but isn't listed in the allegiances. i've listed him

cats outside clans:

shadowclan exiles again get their own group. they return in like, mid rising storm, before whitethroat and littlecloud make a break for it, per tigerclaw's fury

added bailey and retroactively added her to previous allegiances, bc apparently she dies soon before darktail is born

i could probably cut down on the number of kittypets listed, like fireheart & princess' siblings, but ehh. it's a decent reminder that they could, in theory, be encountered in the area

the way i imagine the scars in the life series working would be based on emotional significance

the more emotions based on the death (or maybe not death?) that caused the scar, whether that be stronger emotions or by more people, or both, the more uh dark? obvious? the scar is.

or it can also be based on what that death symbolizes/the significance in the story

so- the winner's final scars would be bolder(? i cannot find right word.) i think it'd be the same with jimmy's last deaths, because it's the canary curse continuing

so uh take an example like explosion scars from Pearl and Scott's last death in double life, where Scott exploded himself and Pearl won. I think Scott's scars would be bolder, both because yeah it's significant for him that he blew himself up, but also for Pearl.

The thing important about that death isn't that Pearl blew up, it's that Scott blew up. Scott doing that is what made Pearl forgive him; it was a very emotional moment for her and significant for the story. But it's not significant because Pearl died, it's because Scott did.

Or take Martyn's winning in limited life. Impulse and Scott's scars would be bolder than Martyn's, because whats unique about him winning is that he betrayed them (probably bolder scars for Scott, considering they were allies from the start). The thing significant about Martyn's winning is Impulse and Scott dying, not Martyn running out of time (however that would scar) or him being /kill-ed if you wanna go with what actually happened and not lore.

And Grian and Scar would probably have bold scars from their 3rd life last deaths, Scar's being the significance of Grian killing him, betraying his day one ally he owed his allegiance to, Grian's being the grief or whatever made him yeet himself off the cliff.

Or when Ren got beheaded in 3rd life. Bold scar, definitely. I didn't watch much of 3rd life or either of their povs, but from what i understand it was kind of a trust thing? Ren was putting trust in Martyn as his hand, Martyn was showing his allegiance to Ren, it marked the red winter beginning, it was an extremely significant event for them, the whole server, and story. I think that scar would be very bold.

Jimmy's last death in 3rd life prob would be bolder than his other last deaths, at least in my general headcannons, since in my brain/lore/headcannon it was that first time being the first one out that sealed his canary curse.

Also, Skizz's last death in 3rd life- apparently that has lore that the death being such a bloody/hectic(?) death was the birth of the boogeyman curse (hence the reason the curse wasn't there in double life or why Skizz has never been the boogey), and given that the boogeyman is so significant in the seasons it is present, that would prob be a bold scar.

In my headcannon, the eye scar Pearl had in her Scarlet/5am Pearl skin represented the separation between her and Scott. So, whether or not she did that herself in bitterness or got it because her soulmate wasn't there to defend her, it sort of was a visual representation (and a non-death scar)of that plot point everyone loves.

(I imagine they both got glass eyes after that season, and Pearl removed hers when being 5am Pearl in limited life for the spooky effect. i refuse to believe Scott didn't get a scar bcuz hello they were linked also empires s2)

I just had the weirdest dream

ok for some reason there was this giant party thing that my school was hosting and I think it was supposed to take place shortly after the election but anyway and my principal asked me why my ears were blue(???) and asked if it was something liberal and I guess I dyed my hair blue earlier (even though im very much not allowed to do that at my school and later you will see it was in fact not blue) and then it panned (yes it was cinematic) to my entire school wearing blue, including my principal, like, his hair was dyed blue and everything but he also had these weird paper cone things on his ears anyway and then we started saying the pledge of allegiance but the election of 1800 was playing but it wasn't or maybe that was the new pledge of allegiance idk and the background and you'd just faintly hear "it's quiet uptown" oh also I was crossing my fingers as I always do when saying the pledge but anyway oh also even though this was a school event some of friends who do not go to my school were there. also there were 6 cats. including a blue one. my friend and her sister brought them. idk why this is relevant bit it is. moving on, after the weird pledge that was also longer for some reason, I just started singing Hamilton and said that Hamilton should be the new national anthem then this lady person idk got mad at me. and then we left and sang "you've married an icarus and he's flown to close to the sun" and we all started crying ok now we were weighing the cats but all together and we had to subtract 15 from the total weight and then after we left my friends sister had to do that (with the same cats might I add) but couldn't figure out like 103 - 15 or smth and everyone kept trying to tell her the answer or smth idk (the answer is apparently 183) but she wouldn't listen and then all of us got in the car and left

actually idk how much this has been talked about but the american school social dynamics changed SO much after i came back from lockdown. i dont know if it was just me and the grade i was in and when i started presenting more gnc, but its at least partially got something to do with trump and right wing extremism. half the cis boys came back with mullets and blue lives matter flag apparel and a vocal, violent, newfound patriotism that wasnt nearly as present before.

before then, nobody said shit about me not standing for the pledge of allegiance, in fact many people often didnt cause they just didnt care. but suddenly more people started up again and harrassing those who didnt, forcing those who didnt want to get trash thrown at them to just stand, or even just find reasons to leave the room every time.

the harrassment against queer people became so much worse (as far as i cpuld tell) especially trans people. a lot of people had the sentiment of "idc if youre gay or ehatever just dont be one of those freaks [trans people]"

a lot of men at the time were practically worshipping alt right podcasters and misogynistic idols like andrew tate

i dont know. it was a scary time to be in high school. because theres these teenagers with strong strong hatred but who arent held to the legal standards of adults and so therefore are allowed to just keep going and going until it crosses some line. im glad im not in high school anymore but i fear for those who are

not to mention a lot of people i knew were kind of forced into online/alternative schooling bc of the bullying, pushing them into the shadows of society bc theyre not accepted where everyone else is. admittedly its a lot better than any alternative from before online schooling was widely available, like dropping out or dying. thats just at my school tho idk what its like elsewhere.

just read an interview sara hess did recently and she’s talks about aegon and him raping dyana and the way this entire thing reads is just so…..not to mention in the same interview she throws daemon under the bus and says he’s a bad father when the episode she wrote she chose to cut out the scenes with him comforting his daughters and chose to add in how he ignores rhaena

[saying this all having seen ep10 leaks, and saying this all with words from HBO that they plan to release a “pristine cut” from earlier today- whatever that means, so by the time this “cut” is released some mass-disliked moments may have been retconed or scenes added]

I have so many many thoughts about not only Sara Hess but the whole writing team. This is LONG, and thank u very much for sparking my thoughts with this ask!

HOTD has, fallen out a lot with me post episode 5/6, I remember thinking what a fantastic start it was off to when I watched episode 1, and the moment it’s established that the writers and directors are NOT collaborating between episodes, and each hold very different understandings of each character they portray- it’s become a quick recipe for disaster. Im not going to nitpick every part of the season, I’m well aware this show plans to overarch multiple seasons, but I am still going to discuss it from a standalone story due to how long each season takes to produce.

1. Complications from writing teams, and contrasting GRRM’s base material:

HOTD and F&B being separate narrative points and existing as different validity tales is something that is perfectly fine, I am used to discussing validity of secondary reports of historical content through my degree, and HOTD is a very good medium (as it is VISUAL instead of written) of attempting to show this tale from inside the House itself- what dissonance occurs is due to fondness over the staple violence and power hungry violence of these Westeros Nobles that creates interesting fantasy grandeur. A lot of people enjoy spectating these awful powerful people commit horrible acts in their own interests and family allegiances; Cersei, Daemon, Otto, and others are fascinating anti-heroes and antagonists due to their setting to allow for large-scale atrocities to physically vent their ambitions and goals.

The Dance of The Dragons (in the Books) is this horrific and tragic death for petty self importance, untreated family trauma and paranoid self-hardening that continues and grows with each generation of the Courts is bound to snap on-top of someone’s shoulders at some point, just around 80 years of RELATIVE “peace” under King Jaehaerys I and Viserys I (55+26 if i’m not mistaken). And such a King born of peace wanting to prolong it (Viserys I) is almost a perfect breeding ground for power hungry leeches to start grappling for the Throne (Otto).

So when the bricks start to crumble and we have expectations of drama and bloodshed, true to GRRM’s writings, it’s not a change in certain plot points that is objectively bad (some are better- Sara Hess respects Laena as a woman of 2 Valyrian Houses dying of her own wish instead of before she can on the staircase), it’s misconceptions of what purpose each character serves between writers that makes each episode clunky, snowballing into the season looking like a puzzle I slapped together from mis-matched pieces I found my desk draw.

Almost all characters if not between back to back episodes, from the beginning to the end of the season have moments that straight up do not make sense compared to who they are established as.

This reaches a more frustrating point when we see the overarching trend of almost all Female main characters be softened and be removed of their personal wants. (In the Books) Rhaenyra and Alicent are two amazing narrative foils; Entitlement vs Want, Power (Dragons) vs Intelligence. These are two women who have lost their childhood sense of female unity and joint suffering, with their in-book ages, Rhaenyra looses an older female figure and Alicent looses a companion and a major representation of her own lost girlhood.

When Alicent becomes just a high-strung pawn for her father, her son placed on the throne without her involvement or knowledge, still holding onto her girlhood she becomes a beautiful tragic figure and Olivia does he’s SO MUCH justice- but at the cost of her being this beautiful antagonist and individual.

When Rhaenyra becomes with unsure and overwhelmed girl-heir, becomes someone who only began to learn the knowledge a monarch requires at her late teens instead of being named heir before she was 10, she’s no longer a strong Targaryen that wants what she has been told her whole life is hers- but a bumbling princess who is asking for permission to wear her fathers crown.

Rhaenys, Baela and Rhaena are moved aside and the young daughters of Laena are given barely any content besides smiling politely. Helena I will say seems relatively untouched, we see a girl in her own solitude with a mother who gave birth way too young and doesn’t know how to be one. A true tragic figure after being sentenced to being a royal womb and looses her child over evening the scales-

[EP10 LEAK- RETCON OR CORRECTION ON OFFICIAL RELEASE UNKNOWN] If Aemond does end up a Kinslayer by technically, Vhagar attacking in retaliation with him being unable to control her after Lucerys in turn doesn’t control Arrax spitting fire first when fleeing to return to his mother. It does work in favour of Aemond being subjected to harsh consequences for either defending himself or completely against his wishes. But again we loose what is one of the most vicious combatants of the civil war, as well as the intent of Helena loosing her own child not matching up. “A Son for a Son”, but to even it out Helena’s child needs to die by accident in return. This also contrasts Aemond’s character of a bloodthirsty prince, he WANTS Lucerys dead, his own half-nephew took his eye, why does he care that the Baratheon wants blood outside of his home instead of infront of him. He’s the Kings Brother, Rider of Vhagar.

This change of intent to misunderstandings does create its own dynamic, but the lack of a cohesive plot and character purpose creates this mess that takes the Dance from:

“This family have become horrifyingly self-entitled and power-drunk due to their dragons, and will do whatever to fulfil their own wants, even killing the Dragons they owe their power to. There is a division between Kin and Family and Kin will be sacrificed if one can gain from it.”

To: “The Sheer Number of Aegons and lack of critical thinking has made so many deaths meaningless.”

The writers seem so scared of writing women with intent and purpose and power, Rhaenyra was a dragon rider at 7, 6 years before the youngest rider before her, we haven’t seen her on Syrax since Daemon steals an egg, we have powerful female Targaryens in-universe, Visenya is right there. Women in the show are mothers or soon to be married and mothers, Rhaenyra has no combat experience as a NAMED HEIR.

2. Sara Hess

She is uh, sure is something of a writer, knowing she’s responsible at least in part of EP6 and EP9 does make sense. She’s got a lot of not great comments and understandings of characters, that does do them a disservice.

The biggest offender (pun intended) is Aegon II, very surprising for a woman to romanticise such a horrific abuse of power and male identity that leads to (as Alicent implies this is not the first time he commits these acts on screen) the SA and worse of a handmaiden, and attempt to paint it as a misguided action of love. Aegon II as a character is a great way to show “A female heir could be perfect, Rhaenyra could be perfect; but will still be tossed aside in favour of a male heir that is abominable, horrible and a stain to his family’s legacy”

Is he given an unfair hand at the blatant favouritism of Viserys? yes. Is he forced into a position that he has no desire to be in until he is either:

1. In the books told that a formidable blood-spilling Rhaenyra will kill her opposition (his family and children) for the crown.

2. In the show dragged to his coronation, crying as he walks the Dragon pit, taking a position he KNOWS his father never once delegated to him.

Tom Glynn-Carney does a PHENOMENAL job with the material he is provided and tasked to act out. We can gain sympathy for him in both narrative chains without the romanticism of SA and r*pe, Tom SHOWS us a young man who turns to alcoholic tendencies due to the obvious fact his father only considers himself to be a father of one, and the fact that his mother has near infinite complex relationship with motherhood as a manipulated childbride and replacement wife that doesn’t even compare to the First Queen to her husband.

Aegon is heavily spoilt and misguided and starved of normal parents, and even as a horribly sexist man of power we can find nuance in him. Sara Hess does him a disservice by saying he “loved” Dyana, if you want to write him as a sympathy figure regarding his own love outwards, it is already there in his DISINTEREST in Helaena, the choice to not want to love is a better rebellion against all his representation of love that he’s grown up with.

“Do you (Mother) Love me?” is a tragic line, it drives sympathy in itself as her firstborn son knowing she is merely 16 years older than him, not even 40 at the time of his coronation. Why make this about him r*ping a woman instead of the complex relationship the family knows Alicent has about motherhood and the loss of her own life at age 16 when Otto decides to move her representative chess piece forward?

Sara Hess’ comments that went viral, although make sense in her distaste with various Scenes of Daemon (which are STILL abstractions from GRRM and his creation of Daemon) from EP10. I am surprised at her ability to unite those who are Team Black or Team Green, but even then her involvement has more downsides to this opportunity of story telling that positives.

A particular comment of hers that I didn’t appreciate in the slightest was her input on (Book) Rhaenyra growing fat after having 5 children and getting older.

Extremely weird to vilify a woman of luxurious life and 5 pregnancies in Medieval times gaining weight. Whilst yes there is valid criticism of male storytelling, why lump the weight of a woman in the same category as sexism of women in power. Rhaenyra’s body has nothing to do with her as a leader or historical figure.

3. Daemon at the hands of the writers (Sara’s portrayal in particular)

GRRM has stated that Daemon Targaryen is his favourite, and I completely understand it.

Who is he? A second-born pure-blood prince, a renowned knight, rider of the Bloodwyrm, a prime Targaryen, confident, ambitious, cunning and loyal to a fault on those he considers family.

Daemon is introduced as an agent of Chaos and polarising public opinion, but still commands respect and at least was worthy enough to be handed the titles of Master and stand on the Court (but not to be earned, he is born into an almost invincible position). We see him painted as ready to take the throne as eldest male Targaryen barring the King himself, and is set at this surface level “Rogue” who dotes on the younger Targaryen at court (intentions unknown).

Ep1-4 we see he aligns more at strength for the Targaryen Dynasty, not just himself. He is a narrative foil to Viserys in attitude and tolerance, yin and yang in a way. He states that he wants to keep the crown on his brothers head steady, he sees past Otto and relays the distaste of the Hightowers that is present in Dark Sister’s original wielder.

I think a lot of people misinterpret him as selfishly power hungry, that every action has to explicitly lead to him as King on the Throne, but why not kill Rhaenyra at any point, he’s a suspect regardless due to his reputation, but he is cunning, there’s no way he couldn’t have pulled it off when she was young with how many of Aemma’s surviving babies died young- Rhaenyra herself could easily have health complications.

He is raised on the idea of their Family being omnipotent, 3 siblings conquered Westeros, who says he cannot ally himself with a select few? He gains significant back room power the way Coryls wants as a Prince consort or Hand to Viserys/Rhaenyra.

He is cruel and violent and awful and egotistical, but he holds the better part of himself for those he deems worthy. This is what makes him a compelling character, unwavering support to those he chooses. With debatable intent with Laena across book and TV stories, he is not neglectful of those he cares of. The active choice to cut scenes of him being a father, any sense of comfort, to imply he favours the daughter that has a dragon already, is nothing short of character assassination and extremely biased.

Daemon is far from a faithful, christian husband, don’t get me wrong, he ends up cheating on Rhaenyra and has fucked so many women in his life I don’t know how he hasn’t got like 34 STDs. But there seems to be an in-universe grey area on Targaryen polyamory and lovers, (Rhaenyra and Laena in book at a little, 👀) his political loyalty and service to Rhaenyra’s crown is never once faltered, he dies for her to get rid of Aemond and Vhagar (the only reason the Greens didn’t instantly die). His is this beautifully volatile and unpredictable character, but compassionate to a fault, and willing to do anything to restore Targaryen Power.

Sara Hess’ writing is far from unbiased, and deviates heavily from who GRRM wrote with such fondness, not completely unfounded, he does groom his niece and kiss her the infront of his the kids he had with his dead wife the day of her funeral. But why paint him as this deadbeat dad when he of him and his brother does not subject his wife to unnecessary pain when she will die regardless, he who does not differentiate between children of different mothers. Viserys is a chronic first-wife bias, he doesn’t care that his second son is partially blinded and instead does not revoke when Rhaenyra asks for what is essentially torture to gain insight on why Aemond called her Bastard Sons, Bastards. Why doesn’t Sara call him out on saying he only has one child, why doesn’t she say she doesn’t understand why people like Viserys at Paddy’s portrayal?

She’s incorrect in us liking him as (not my words) “daddy” because he killed Rhea Royce and groomed his niece, people with brains are aware of his faults. We like BOTH of these brothers who were overzealous in the use of brothels are young bachelor princes. We like them because of the effort Matt and Paddy put in DESPITE the writing they are shown with.

The most concrete moment of bad directing of daemon shows in his interactions with Viserys.

Matt understands Daemon at peak when he IMPROVISES Daemon stepping up as the brother protecting his weak king from Otto and himself when he picks up the crown, and supports Viserys on his way to the Throne, he could have easily left him to stumble and make a fool of himself. He wouldn’t though.

[EP10 SPOILERS] Seeing Daemon get violent with Rhaenyra, after he grabs 3 dragon eggs for her, after he marries her in secret, after he kills Vaemond for her. Is so out of character, not in his general sense, but out of character in WHO he directs this violence at. The physical scene cuts make it seem like they cut out any reconciliation, as well as the rough choking -> mocking -> going back to normal.

It gets even MORE OOC when it gets to Rhaenyra’s troubling childbirth of Visenya.

Daemon, a man who lost his mother through childbirth of his younger brother Aegon who then died in the crib.

Daemon who did not have a mother for long at all.

Daemon, who watched Viserys and Aemma loose child after child until she dies.

Daemon who watched Laena struggle and end up commanding Vhagar to kill her as an act of Mercy.

Daemon who watched his daughters not have a mother for long at all.

Daemon who watched and saw Rhaenyra not have her mother for long.

Daemon who does not stay with her during the pregnancy, Daemon who they decided to keep separate from Rhaenyra as she struggles to give birth.

It is such an out of character moment that it along with the choking scene ruins him as a man, as every episode has established.

Again he is not perfect, withholds public affection even in high-strung moments due to being cautious in court. Has killed (or at least plotted) his first wife, the whole Gold cloak scene, the grooming.

But, He if this is not changed in the “pristine” cut, it does ruin all that GRRM has established.

It speaks a lot when improvisation on the Actors speak better on the characters than the writers themselves. It speaks a lot when an improvised scene touches people more than what the writers explicitly add.
