had my first actual karen at work yesterday (i say actual because she was a regular asshat customer until she asked for a manager)

there is a laundry list of shit she complained about/asked for but of the most annoying are:

she asked to have a plate comped because we went a little bit over the estimated wait time (which we emphasize at the order window that it isnt exact and offer much faster plates if they arent prepared to wait for our signature)

when we told her we couldnt do that she asked for a free, filled out stamp card (which could be used for a free plate at a later date, so the exact same thing)

when we told her we couldnt do that she asked for a full fucking refund. which. mind you her family had already gotten and eaten their plates. what the fuck. bitch if we can't give you a partial refund why the fuck do you think you should ask for a full refund after you already consumed the damn food

after yelling at our new hire, i asked my head cook to step in because our new hire couldnt handle this karen alone (and i was in the middle of cooking something else) my head cook talked to the lady, explained we couldnt give the things she was asking for, and started to get pissed off because this lady wouldnt stop

so i jump in, have the same conversation and then this lady asks for my manager. she asked if "that lady" (i.e. my head cook) was my manager. we are a family owned business in a food truck. there are no fucking managers. i told the karen we had no managers on site and she asks "well is she higher than you" and i repeated that we dont have managers and we went back and forth like this for a couple rounds before she says "you arent answering my question. is she higher up than you" WHICH. NORMALLY I WOULD GET BUT BITCH YOU'RE DOING THE SAME THING BY IGNORING WHAT THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE TOLD YOU ABOUT THE COMP PLATE AND JUST REPEATING YOUR QUESTION

i eventually say that she's the head cook, but no managers and the karen demands to speak to her (which. remember, she had already talked to her)

we end up offering her one of our small sides no charge because people like her just want something to feel like theyve won

Am I the asshole for calling a (now ex-) mutual a stingy asshole?

So to start, I (NB20) am in a pretty rough situation, I'm facing homelessness soon, transphobia at home and work and my hours have been getting cut resulting in me making even less money that can sustain me. I have a toyhou.se forum post up stating I have emergency commissions open to help me out and to please support me if you can. This is where the situation begins. I have a mutual on toyhou.se who I'll call Apple (MTF22) I talk to sometimes to the point I'd say we are friends, not super close but friends nonetheless. She made a bulletin telling people about my commissions and to please comm me if they could which I'm very grateful for since I did get a few customers from her because of that. The thing is, a few weeks later, she made a bulletin talking about how happy she was so many commissions she bought were finished around the same time and posted all of them with the artists tagged in the post. It was honestly... quite a few, I'm talking like 9 pieces of art of her fursona and even a custom vtuber model she got of her sona. I was going to reply all happy for her, but it made me think... how much did she spend on those commissions?? So I went through all the artists socials to find their commission prices and came to a total of fucking $385!!! More than half of my current goal I'm trying to make through commissions to stay out of homelessness!! So I messaged Apple saying since I saw she bought a few commissions if she was interested in buying a comm from me. She replies saying "Ohh! I'd love to <333 but im just not in a place to buy any more comms right now :< sorry >.<!!" So I casually reply really? because it seems like your in the perfect place to help me out after already spending over $300 in commissions. She tells me she's sorry and really wishes someone would be able to help me out but she just wasn't that interested in my art or a custom to which I tell her she could've easily donated to my ko-fi which I have always had since she clearly has money to spend? To this, she straight up IP blocks me. So still fucking annoyed, I vented in a discord server I share with a few friends from being in a few shared CS together, saying how annoying it is rich assholes like her would drop half a thousand for a picture of their fursona but don't even blink twice at their so called friends. anyway, one of my friends takes a look at Apples th profile and notices she has a new bulletin up and sends me a screenshot, but anways the bulletin reads like "hey!! just saying, but please dont come into my dms acting like you know my financial situation better than i do, just because i buy a lot of commissions doesnt mean im made of money! and please dont think that me commisioning artist 1 means i hate artist 2? thats so weird, thanks!!!!!" and seeing all their subscribers just kissing her ass pissed me off so i made my own bulletin that just stated "i thought it was pretty fucking weird to know how bad ur friend's situation was and to go buy a bunch of comms instead of buying a comm from or even throwing a buck to help me out? like yeah im gonna think i know ur situation better than u, you stingy fuck!!!" Anyway, she mustve been block evading (which I reported her for) since she unblocked me, took a screenshot of my bulletin, then went on about how she lived in an abusive household; her dad had thrown her into a sink and chipped her tooth, bruised half her face and scarred it pretty badly. She bought a bunch of commissions immediately afterwards in a panic to make herself feel better, paying everything with her savings. Which to me.. isn't an excuse. Ive been hit and abused and still found scraps of money to pull together to give to mutuals who need it and Ive been bumping my own post like crazy and she had literal weeks to donate or comm me. Not to mention Ive had exmutuals of hers come to me saying that shes never donated anything to them either despite advertising their posts but always had money for plushies, comms and other crap, meaning Im not alone in thinking shes a stingy asshole. Not all BINARY trans people use she/her or he/him pronouns.

Assuming pronouns from labels or presentation or anything is exactly what we've been FIGHTING for years to get people NOT to do.

This is literally just enforcing that pronouns-gender. It's literally going to hurt literally every trans woman who doesn't use she/her pronouns and literally every trans man who doesn't use he/him pronouns, including he/him butch trans women, she/her fem trans men, and trans women and men who use they/them, it/its, and neopronouns. It also hurts nonbinary trans women and nonbinary trans men, as well as both binary and nonbinary multigender people (depending on which label they use for their multigenderedness, because surprise surprise, womanhood/manhood does not inherently equal binary gender.

Being a binary trans person who uses the expected pronouns associated with said binary gender does not mean that you get to try and set a standard of relatively conforming to the status quo. You do not get to set a standard of misgendering anyone who deviates from relative social norms and forcing people whose identities and pronouns are less palatable to binary society, who have less ability to assimilate, for your own comfort.

Normalize telling people your pronouns, yes, and asking for them if you don't know. Not using them without knowing what pronouns are right? Sure. They/them is, for all that it is called a "neutral" pronoun, still misgendering people who don't use it (especially for people who explicitly WANT a gendered pronoun. We use fae/faer precisely because it affirms our faegender identity).

But not all binary trans people even use binary pronouns, let alone the ones that "match" their gender. Not all trans women/trans men are even binary. This is the exact same logic people will use to assume all nonbinary people use they/them and that it's acceptable to misgender nonbinary people who don't use they/them, because it's the "default" pronoun for their gender.

Even if binary trans men and women using their "matching" pronouns are in the majority, that makes it all the more important not to just decide their needs are more important than a smaller subgroup of trans people who have less of an overall voice or ability to get their needs met. Communities should work to protect ALL their members, and especially minorities within the community who are more vulnerable because of their smaller numbers.

Additional note: I blocked the person in the screenshot because of trauma over past internet discussions devolving into unproductive and emotional difficult arguments that didn't result in anything other than painful feelings. This person seems like a decent person who would be willing to talk things out, but I can't currently do so while maintaining my mental health. If he does see this and goes "oh I hadn't thought of that" or whatever, I honestly would love to talk about solutions that help everyone. I'm upset at the idea of prioritizing one group of trans people, especially in ways that hurt others, and extra especially in ways that uphold existing transphobic societal ideals like "pronouns=gender". But I have no ill will towards the person in the screenshot and will remind everyone NOT to try to find and harass them.

It's perfectly valid to be upset by even well-intentioned misgendering. But the solution is not to just swap who is being misgendered, ignoring/erasing the existence of trans men and women who don't use the default pronouns and/or aren't binary. It's not to use the same logic used to justify misgendering nonbinary people.

It's to work to find a solution that doesn't misgender anyone, which is why I specifically point out not gendering anyone until you're sure as good insight from the screenshot of the OP.

They made a vent post that was at worst a bit thoughtless, suggesting something that could be harmful because of it. They're not a bad person for that. I just wasn't able to respond directly but did want to point out that even if it's not bad, it isn't okay either, and why it isn't.

Hi! before we jump in I just want to state that this is my first fic that I've written in a while- so please be graceful! Im trying my best to get back into the swing of things but its a lot different than writing lyrics. Also this fic is very self indulgent because I cant find any long Vi fics!

You had never really been one for parties. Not that you were “not like the other girls.” Trust me, you enjoyed going out and being a freak just as much as the next person, but parties? It's not really your thing, which is why it was so confusing to be at a raging house party. They said it was a celebration of the football team's big win, but honestly, it was just an excuse to throw a rager. You kept yourself tucked into the corners, away from most people, and definitely away from the punch. You were really just here for your boyfriend, “celebrating” his win, and because you didn't want to deal with the argument that came later had you missed this “celebration”. From your corner, you could vaguely see him through the sliding glass doors of some poor sods house, but what told you even more that he was out there were the increasing chants of “chug! Chug! Chug!”, because why would a college frat boy be normal about anything including alcohol? 

Okay, maybe you were a little salty, just maybe. Just maybe you were a little annoyed that you'd been dragged along to some B-rate rager when you could've stayed home, gotten some assignments done, and overall could've had a very not-salty time. You could feel your face scrunch up, you can't really help it, but the longer you spend in that corner the more your face twists into one of “I wish to go home!” annoyance just twinging at your lips. 

That is until you feel somebody lean against the wall next to you, ripping you away from your less-than-content thoughts. Turning to look at them, you immediately recognized the pink-haired girl. You’d known Vi since senior year of high school, but you'd fallen out of touch since then, “Who's left you all alone starlight?” She asks with Sauve, and honestly, I bet it worked on other girls, other girls who didn't know Vi, “Who do you think?” You replied with a bite, annoyance ebbed into your tone of voice. Despite the dim lighting, you could actually get a good look at her- she was pretty, you'd never admit it but she was super pretty, messy freckles dotted her nose and cheeks, and from there you let your gaze followed the lines of her face to the scar on her lip, all her rough aspects came together to form an art piece. ↪for a while he did find you slightly annoying but he would get used to the way you were rather outgoing and predicament.

so i made this post several months ago and almost immediately i got stuck on the idea of twins who share my maladapted ideas about sisterhood and within a couple days id fleshed them out into fully realised characters and they distracted me from actually writing Sarah for a good while. and while i do want to write a proper story about them some day, it'd be after i finish sarah. so in the meantime i can at least talk about them!

so these are the twins! the one on the left is the older sister Mary, and on the right is the younger sister Clair. in-universe they go to the same college as sarah's brother alec, though how much that will come up (if at all) is up in the air. theyre a couple of friendly, sporty stem majors (specifically, clair studies astrophysics and mary studies engineering). theyre identical twins, but mary has a scar under her eye from an accident when they were children, and she also straightens her hair and does more with makeup, so its easy to tell them apart unless theyve just showered, though still possible.

as is to be expected from me, their relationship turned sexual pretty early and remains so to this day, despite some Problems it caused in their middle school days. theyre codependent and have a tendency to ignore each others faults. you could probably count on one hand the number of nights theyve slept in different beds.

but their relationship is *not* romantic. its just sisterly. neither of them is opposed to the other having a romantic relationship with someone else, but the problem that arises is when theyve tried dating, it always gets to a point of 'you spend too much time with your sister' and then they break it off, because fuck you thats my sister. theyve both kind of given up on romance, especially clair. mary enjoys having casual flings with people she meets on campus, but she makes sure to go back to her own dorm to sleep. neither of them really see a problem with fucking other people bc sex has never really been correlated with romance or anything for them. thats just something you do together and its fun.

personality-wise, mary's very outgoing and forms emotional bonds quickly. she values her friendships and doesnt have a lot that bothers her, but things that *do* bother her can send her off the handle pretty easily. clair meanwhile is basically only interested in her sister, but she maintains friendships with most of mary's friends just because she's always around. she plays it off pretty well, but their actual bonds are barely skin-deep. clair annoys easily, but she doesn't care enough about most of her friends to actually do anything about it. they both see these as charm points in the other. its admirable that mary 'wears her heart on her sleeve' and that clair 'is so calm and composed.'

the girls mother is out of the picture, but their dad is nice and they like him so they chose a college nearby so they could visit on weekends and breaks. the family's originally from the south but they moved west in middle school, so their dad still has the accent. the two of them picked up the local accent to fit in at school better, but they slip back into the southern one when theyre tired or alone together.
