guild members’ relationships with makarov headcanons!

Omg this is gonna get me so emotional! This post is gonna be so long holy shit

Makarov knows that these kids are super traumatized when they come to him. That's why he dresses like a funny little jester man. He doesn't want to scare them when they first join

He always takes the time to get to know and work with each kid that joins the guild. Makarov will take that child under his wing for the first week just to make sure they are comfortable

A lot of the members genuinely refer to him as their grandpa/dad (depending on which generation).

Makarov was still figuring out how to deal with children when Cana first joined. He feels he didn't do a good job at helping her when she first came

Cana, of course, disagrees and thinks the old man did a great job at helping her out when she joined

Cana has a ton of respect for him so when he asks her to cut down on drinking. She does so without question. (cutting down meaning drinking one barrel of liquor instead of two)

The two of them do regularly drink together tho

Gray goes to Makarov for advice the most out of the guild members. He really struggles with making the right decisions and Makarov is always there to listen with only minor judgement

Gray feels super indebted to Makarov. Even tho Makarov tells him all he wants for any of his kids is to live long and happy lives

Erza gave Makarov the most trouble when joining the guild. He had no idea how to get through to her. She was always polite and listened to him, but he couldn't get her to open up for the life of him

He just desperately wanted to make the little girl smile. The first time Erza smiled at him, he bawled his eyes out

Erza always makes sure to shoot him a smile when she enters the guildhall now

Natsu decides that since Makarov found him, he now owes Makarov his life. Makarov nearly has to beat it into Natsu that he does not owe him anything and that he is not to lay his life down for Makarov

Natsu then decides to live by the rule: 'you saved my life so now I'm your problem'

Natsu has so much respect for Makarov it's not even funny. But Natsu's love comes with a price. And that price is constant headaches

Mirajane actually didn't like Makarov all that much at first. She appreciated him bringing her family to the guild but she thought he was too lax with how he ran the place

The two of them really bonded after Lisanna's death

Lisanna adores Makarov. She's one of the few people who can catch him off guard and tackle him in hugs (it happens a lot. you'd think he'd catch on by now)

Elfman views Makarov as the perfect man. He wants to be like him. Makarov insists Elfman should find better role models

Mystogan views Makarov as his father. He cannot imagine anyone else who deserves the title

Mystogan's biggest regret was not being able to tell Makarov how much he appreciated everything he did for him

Bisca and Alzack were so upset that Makarov wasn't there for their wedding that they ended up getting remarried just to have him be a part of it

Every time Makarov compliments Gajeel, Gajeel has to fight back tears. He worked so hard to earn Makarov's trust and respect so now every time the guy is nice to him its almost enough to send Gajeel into a sobbing mess

I saw Wicked yesterday and it was pretty cute, I’d have liked it more if I were normal about The Wizard of Oz, but I am not. So, it was cute.

I like the strange little poly thing they have goin on, tho it feels close enough to the ol love triangle trope that I was a little irritated, but it was fine

It was very well produced, and as far as modern major Hollywood movies go, it was very good

#wicked the movie #I was really skeptical at first when I heard it was like “a wizard of oz backstory’#but i thought #hey let’s keep an open mind #it’s a very popular musical and has been for a long time #so the musical numbers will probably be fire and that’s the most important part #tragically most of those songs were not my style #I like maybe 3 songs and thats a maybe cause it may have been 2 #maybe I’d have enjoyed it more if it were marketed to me as a wizard of oz alternate universe #since so much of it is just #wrong #ik ik that kinda thing is just part of art #but like I said #I’m not normal about the wizard of oz #I was really hoping I’d love it #and I was willing to overlook a lot #but there’s only so much I can overlook #like how Oz in the movie basically is a wizard #he doesn’t master in illusions and magic tricks #he’s one of the best goddamn mechanics out there #some steampunk level skill #and the emerald city is ACTUALLY green #missing the point they were missing the point #that’s not all but that’s the main thing I will not be getting over #unless they completely obliterate the emerald city and have to rebuild #and the wizard gets a lobotomy #but I mean half the point of the wizard of oz is that its all a dream so #that’s fine alternate universe whatever you can add depth to characters that shouldn’t have it #as a means to use them as a vehicle to tell a story you want to tell through characters people recognize I get it #but the Oz part makes me so mad cause it would have fit into the theme perfectly and they changed it cause why???

the imagery and audio of the opening scene of s1e1 of arcane is just insanely well done for the set-up of the show’s themes and central conflicts. this is just a quick analysis (that spiraled) of what i notice as i’m re-watching, but—

a) the POV of “jinx” with the scribbles overlaying the aftermath of destruction and devastation lay the groundwork for not only what represents her POV to us, the audience, but also to where it originates. this is one of the first things we see in e1: the scribbled faces appear on the enforcers and on the dead bodies even as powder herself has her eyes covered. the echoes of violence reach her even as she tries not to look. retrospectively, we are meant to notice how "jinx" was already forming years before she started “jinxing” jobs with vi and the gang—the violence of her circumstances and the impact they have on her as a child played a key role in what the show calls her "instability," in what we understand as her development. her scribbled vision is first associated with violence done to her and those around her before it is associated with her later choices, which arguably can be rooted in her circumstances (more on this later). this is central to what arcane as a show wants to establish wrt their commentary on violence as a cycle and consequences that cannot be undone regardless of one's actions.

b) the most striking imagery to me: blood running down the faces of the statues on the bridge between piltover and the undercity, being made to look as though they are crying. the bridge is a key piece of imagery introduced in this opening sequence that arcane returns to throughout later eps. the expression of these statues is still, solemn, and silent. they are guardians of the bridge between piltover and the rest of the city. the tears of blood, however, have moved the unmovable. this can be interpreted in a couple ways, but here's mine. the blood as tears represents the ongoing mourning for those lost to violence. vander's resistance failed in multiple ways in that it did not end piltover's rule over the undercity, nor did it save those who fought in the resistance. moreover, this bridge is revisited in e2, and we see the bloodstains never left. they cannot be washed away; the memorial to those who were lost—vi’s parents—remain, and we see vander ask vi if she’s willing to lose powder to a war, just like she lost her parents. later on in the ep when vi approaches deckard, a drop of blood runs down her face like a tear. she, too, steps into the role (or tries to), as a stone-faced guardian, but violence moves her. particularly, it moves her out of powder's life, contributing to jinx's development.

c) when vi is about to cry, it looks like she’s holding herself back before she breaks down, and only then does powder also cry. there are a couple subtle moments throughout this first scene that express the extent to which powder revolves around vi, and this is one of them. powder takes her cues from vi: just minutes ago in the scene, powder only looks at the bodies because vi stopped. so we have this interpersonal level of reliance between these two, but the show doesn't want us to forget where the cues for vi come from. powder looked because vi stopped. vi stopped because the devastation around her made her stop.

d) throughout this scene, music is the dominant auditory experience. however, there is one sound that breaks through the music: the weight of vander’s gauntlets dropping to the ground. the break in the music is meant to express the weight of this decision. it's the only sound of an action that reaches the viewer as he throws the gauntlets down in favor of picking up the responsibility of vi and powder. with this action, he attempts to abandon his cause in hopes to protect vi and powder,

e) but vi looks back. we see her glare back across the bridge towards piltover, her eyes narrowed, and we understand that a key part of her character will be resistance. and to cross that bridge, she must put on vander’s gauntlets. we see her try to embrace this legacy throughout the first ep and beyond—“this is the exact job vander would’ve pulled when he was our age” is what vi says to her friends when on that first job to steal from jayce's workshop. and throughout the first few eps we see vander’s legacy called into question, with a focus on his legacy of resistance against piltover. that's the legacy those around him prefer, including vi herself. but it’s also a legacy he’s rejected in favor of another: his work to protect the lanes through non-violent means. silco’s later criticism of “you’re willing to die for a cause but not fight for it” towards vander perfectly encapsulates vander’s decision to put the gauntlets down, and why he still fails to prevent violence, particularly against vi and powder.

overall: the opening sequence is vital for establishing the link between vi's and powder's relationship and the violence enacted against the underground by piltover. the show's theme expresses that the former would not exist without the latter. the tragedy of jinx isn't just an interpersonal tragedy. it's a circumstantial one. it's an environmental one. it's a societal one. remember: mylo first drops the name jinx when he says powder jinxes every job. but there wouldn’t be any jobs to do--the coins coming into the lanes wouldn't be "only from crime"--without the violence piltover has enacted against the undercity.

there’s a lot of pain in asking ourselves the “if only’s” of these first few episodes. but if the alternative for powder killing claggor and mylo was for her to come on the mission to save vander anyways, to fight anyways, then there was never a choice. when powder says, “I’m not a fighter,” and vi responds, “you don’t have to be,” vi fails to understand the consequences violence has already had on her sister. in powder's mind, you don't have to fight translates as you don't belong here. the only way powder knows how to help is to fight--it's what vi (and everyone around her) taught her, even inadvertently. the show tells us that there was never a real choice in any part of this sequence. the real legacy was the violence topside enacted and continues to enact against the underground. what prevents vi from coming back to powder is ultimately marcus, regardless of his motivations.

what the opening sequence, and those first three eps, tell us about the show’s defining conflict is this. in a system built on inequity, its defining characteristic will always be violence, and whether those subjected to that violence try to fight it, live within it, or take advantage of it, the consequences cannot be undone. there is no going back.

i can feel myself drifting from the TTCC community .. like i still love the characters and their dynamics, but ive been thinking less about toontown as a whole and just some of the characters are lingering . this usually happens towards the end of my obsessions

plus i just dont feel in touch with the community LOL i just kinda stick to my own stuff and sometimes like the art and stories ppl make .. but im in this awkward spot right now where im MENTALLY not engaging as much. idk if this is anything

#i dont think anything specific is causing it. im just not super deep in my toontown phase like i was in the beginning #i like the characters . but have been thinking less abt the actual toontown story #and i think im starting to dislike some things abt the canon to the point i resent it slightly #it feels like theres soo much missed potential in some parts and ik i have to just be patient but . bc of that my obsession is fading i fea #and theres a lot of messy lore and its become disengaging to follow #they say theyre fixing it but continue to indulge in these non-canon social media posts that i rlly like but. theyre not canon theyre just #kinda made for fun it seems . like maybe filler content in the meantime for big canon stuff idk #ive just become less invested in the whole toontown story recently ! still love it :] but #im in that awkward end of an era phase #the phase is lingering #many of the characters are floating around my brain and i adore them very much #just not thinking abt them in the context of the toontown story as much #and i feel more disconnected from fandom lately which isnt helping . theres a lack of connection on my part #im still gonna post art and reblog toontown stuff btw. nothings really gonna change #just felt like rambling?? im not even gonna properly tag this LMAO #any of yall have this kinda lingering feeling at the end of ur phases? cuz i do

on the one hand i love harping and moaning over missed opportunities for previous dragon age companion cameos bc sometimes bioware really whiffs it (i long for the world where merrill is the eluvian expert instead of morrigan) but. on the other hand. sometimes it’s like. why would that character show up. answer quickly. the answer can’t be that it’s because you like them. it feels very reminiscent of having to accept that our wardens will never make another appearance.

#edit: panicked and added ‘instead of morrigan’ to clarify. this is a bellara love zone #‘zevran should have been in veilguard’ and what would he do. he canonically does not fuck with the crows.#like ik a lot of us are still mourning our inquisitors being super in the background and missed cameos #and sidelined love plots if you didn’t romance solas #and etc etc etc #but can morrigan be an example that sometimes an extended cameo makes a character worse ASLDJSJFJAJJDJS #like varric imo is the only continued main character who remains overall consistent #and even then depending on how you played da2 vs. inq that could be a false statement #but like. i banked on josephine being in veilguard when i figured that we would see antiva #and that the inquisition would still have some presence #she literally however. has no place in the plot of veilguard.#and also since i’m on this soapbox already #i also mourn what the inquisitor could have been in veilguard #i did love his (mine) presence where it was but also very like. blank slate insert.#i too had theories upon theories of how big the inq’s role could have been #and i went near apoplectic when bioware said that the inq’s story was over after trespasser #and i am still mad today that drinking from the well of sorrows had literally no actual impact on the story #bc solas is in rook’s head and morrigan has the aspect of mythal #however. sometimes. when i see people now be like ‘the inq shouldve been the hero of veilguard’#i just kinda. softly side eye like. we had nearly a decade preparing for this. we’ve known since trespasser that they won’t be.#and even then bioware confirmed in like. what. 2020/2021? that da4 would have a new hero #like trust me i get the umbrage and if i dwell on it then yeah past frustrations boil up #but also tbf trespasser did end with the inq literally saying that they need to find people that solas doesn’t know #besides i love rook as a hero i think they’re fun #i saw someone say that rook was brought in to make the game accessible to new players and even if that’s true #i think veilguard is near impossible to play if you haven’t played /at the very least/ inquisition and it’s dlcs #but yeah tldr. honestly as i come to play veilguard more and love it more and more i will naturally become more critical #as i am with inquisition (my beloved game that i sometimes want to uproot)#but honestly. i wanted to enjoy veilguard so after a while i just had to like. put my inq back in his toy box and accept that he’s gonna be #a bit of a paper doll for the rest of the games

i know i haven't been as writing as much as i used to but man, getting radio silence on the stuff i do make really does puts a damper on my motivation TO write (；′⌒`)

I redesigned all of mkdm (also a mini rewrite but that's not gone into so shush)

Cause I was bored and a lot of scenes make me feel icky now

Shouta is the most different I think, Lucoa second most but that's just because I tried to add more dragon elements to her.

Anyways

Shout's motivations are still the same but now it's a whole, "I'm an adult now, why does my family still treat me like I don't know what I'm doing!" Instead of, "I'm a kid who just wants to be liked by adults!"

Not much else has changed with anyone else's motivations. I wish the show focused more of Tohru and Kobayashi :/

I also designed some human disguises for the dragons so uhhh, those and doubles (plus Elma lol) under the cut!

And ofc the human disguises :3
