Hey Ren, not sure if you know/can answer this, but can the four CWJ players charged return to their teams in the time between pleading and trial? With the trial(s) potentially being in 2026, I was just curious what would happen/what the league's next steps are. Is there anything in the CBA?
So I can answer this theoretically because there is precedent and there is a rule in the CBA that allows Bettman to suspend all of the players that are currently being charged.
However that in particular is not what I'm concerned with. My main point of conflict is whether or not the teams will terminate each of these players contracts. This happens fairly frequently we saw one with former Coyotes' player Alex Galchenyuk this past off season and again during the season with Corey Perry and the Chicago Blackhawks.
The problem here with both cases is that it depends on whether or not Bettman is willing to suspend them until this is over and we get a solid answer or if their teams are willing to terminate their contracts based on bad faith. Because we've seen the commissioner suspend people awaiting trial prior (LAK Voynov he was suspended without pay just hours after being arrested on suspected domestic violence. Never playing a game again before going back to Russia without being put through deportation) just like we've seen him ignore similar issues (Varlomov the year prior in COL was allowed to keep playing after being arrested for suspicion of 2nd degree kidnapping and 3rd degree assault).
The NHL is less than stellar when it comes to consistency but we do have precedent and we do already know the IIHF stated that the 2018 world Junior champion team would not be allowed to play in international competition. Of course now the question with that is whether or not the rest of the team not being actively charged will be allowed to play.
I'm sorry if this doesn't actually answer any of your questions but a lot of it is up in the air right now based on what Bettman decides to do. But if you do have any other questions feel free to ask

Penguins to retire Jaromir Jagr’s No. 68 during pre-game ceremony on Feb. 18
By Pittsburgh Penguins
November 10, 2023
The Pittsburgh Penguins will raise two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jaromir Jagr’s no. 68 jersey to the rafters at PPG Paints Arena on February 18 versus the Los Angeles Kings as part of a pre-game celebration, it was announced today by the club.
As part of the ‘Celebrate 68’ festivities, all fans in attendance that night will receive a replica Jagr No. 68 banner. In addition, a commemorative Jagr bobblehead has been added as a giveaway to all fans in attendance on Thursday, March 14 versus the San Jose Sharks.
Jagr, whose NHL career spanned over two decades, is one of the most accomplished players in NHL history and a member of the league’s ‘100 Greatest Players.’ In 1,733 career regular-season games, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound winger scored 766 goals, 1,155 assists and 1,921 points. He ranks fourth all-time in games played and goals, fifth in assists, and only Wayne Gretzky (2,857) has recorded more points than him. No player in NHL history has more game-winning goals than Jagr’s 135.
Drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round (5th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Jagr spent the first 11 seasons of his 24-year NHL career with the Penguins, appearing in 806 regular-season games notching 439 goals, 640 assists, 1,079 points, 78 game-winning goals and was plus-208. He is in the top-5 in franchise history in games played (5th), goals (4th), assists (4th), points (4th), plus/minus (2nd) and game-winning goals (4th). He was one of 13 captains in team history, serving in the role from 1998-01.
Jagr was an instrumental piece of Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and ’92 – his first two seasons in the NHL. In that two-year span, Jagr suited up for 45 postseason contests, notching 37 points (14G-23A), which was sixth in the NHL over that stretch. Jagr shined during the 1992 Stanley Cup playoffs, recording a playoff career-high 24 points (11G-13A) in 21 games. In total, Jagr has dressed in 208 Stanley Cup Playoff contests, accumulating 201 points (78G-123A). He is one of just six players in NHL history with 200 or more playoff points.
The 10-time NHL All-Star has won a plethora of awards over the course of his NHL career. He is a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner (NHL Scoring Leader – 1995, ’98, ’99, ‘00, ’01), three-time Ted Lindsay Award winner (Most Outstanding Player – 1999, ’00, ’06), and was the recipient of the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) in 1998-99 and Bill Masterton Trophy (Perseverance, Sportsmanship, and Dedication to Ice Hockey) in 2015-16. Jagr was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team seven times (1995, ’96, ’98, ’99, ’00, ’01, ’06), the Second All-Star Team in 1996-97 and was a member of the All-Rookie Team in 1990-91.
Throughout NHL history, only Chris Chelios (26), Gordie Howe (26) and Mark Messier (25) have played more seasons in the NHL than Jagr’s 24. Of his 24 seasons, he notched 20-plus goals 19 times and 30-plus goals 15 times, which both rank third in league history. He’s also hit the 100-point plateau five times, and was the sixth-oldest player in NHL history to accomplish that feat during the 2005-06 season at 34 years and 31 days old.
The native of Kladno, Czechia has multiple accolades on the international stage. He’s won a gold medal (1998) and bronze medal (2006) at the Olympic Games, two gold medals (2005, ’10) and two bronze medals (1990, 2011) at the IIHF World Championship and a bronze medal at the 1990 IIHF World Junior Championship. Jagr is one of just 30 players in history to join the Triple Gold Club, which includes winning a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal and an IIHF World Championship gold medal. He and Jiri Slegr are the only two players of Czech descent to accomplish this feat.
Jagr currently owns Rytiri Kladno of the Czech Extraliga and has been majority owner of the team since 2011-12.

I need someone to explain to me the difference between FIFA, UEFA and Premier League
The only thing I know is that Cristiano Ronaldo used to date Paris Hilton
https://www.tumblr.com/bitchinbarzal/730826448242376704/i-dont-know-much-about-soccer-but-if-we-in-the
So fifa is in charge of football worldwide — this is comparable to the IIHF
UEFA is in charge of football in europe — this is comparable to the NHL
Premier league is a league within UEFA — Premier league is solely limited to English teams
There’s also the Champions league — this is top teams within UEFA and usually the top 4 teams from the Premier league are in the Champions league which provides the link between them.

IIHF bans Russia and Belarus tournaments 'until further notice'; Russia dropped as 2023 world junior hosts
The International Ice Hockey Federation banned Russia and Belarus from tournaments "until further notice" on Monday in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia will also no longer host the 2023 World Junior Championship, set to begin in December. A new host will be determined in the coming months.
The suspension applies to Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs in every age category at IIHF competitions, the federation said. The IIHF noted six competitions between March and September in which the moratorium will apply:
Read More >> U20 Ice Hockey stream free
2022 Men's World Championship (May): ROC and Belarus would not participate
2022 Women's World Championship (August-September): ROC would not participate
2022 World Junior Championship (dates TBA): Russia's U20 team would not participate
2022 Men's U18 World Championship (April-May): Russia and Belarus' U18 teams would not participate
2022 Women's U18 World Championship (dates TBA): Russia's U18 team would not participate
2022 Continental Cup (March): Belarus club team HK Gomel would not participate
The IIHF did not announce a cutoff date for the countries to be reinstated. Russia is slated to host the 2023 Men's World Championship, which begins May 5, 2023, in St. Petersburg. The IIHF did not announce a change to that tournament on Monday. SKA St. Petersburg is building a 21,500-capacity arena with a planned opening in time for the tournament.
“The IIHF is not a political entity and cannot influence the decisions being taken over the war in Ukraine,” IIHF president Luc Tardif said in a statement. “We nevertheless have a duty of care to all of our members and participants and must therefore do all we can to ensure that we are able to operate our events in a safe environment for all teams taking part in the IIHF World Championship program.”
“We were incredibly shocked to see the images that have come out of Ukraine. I have been in close contact with members of the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine and we hope for all Ukrainians that this conflict can be resolved in a peaceful way and without the need for further violence.”
The invasion has led to reactions from members of the hockey community, including Wayne Gretzky, who called for Russia to be removed from this summer's rescheduled World Junior Championship tournament in Alberta while on-air with TNT.
"I think international hockey should say we’re not going to let them play in the world junior hockey tournament," Gretzky said. "I think we got to, as Canadians, take that stance since the games are going to be played in Edmonton."
USA Hockey released a statement in support of the IIHF's decision. "The actions of Vladimir Putin and the support from Belarusian government officials, are beyond reprehensible," the federation said.
Hockey Canada released a statement supporting the IIHF's decision. It also is prohibiting Russia's participation in events held in Canada that do not fall under the IIHF's jurisdiction, including the Hlinka Gretzky Cup scheduled for Alberta this upcoming summer. “While this is a humanitarian crisis that goes beyond sports, we also stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian hockey family and all those impacted around the world,” the federation said.
Other sporting federations have already imposed sanctions on Russian teams. FIFA suspended Russia from competing in international games until further notice. UEFA also moved the Champions League final from St. Petersburg to Paris and suspended Russian club Spartak Moscow from European competition. The governing bodies of skiing and Formula One pulled upcoming races from Russia.
The International Olympic Committee requested sports federations not invite Russian or Belarusian athletes and officials to participate in international competition, and to cancel or move all events planned to take place in Russia or Belarus.

@mypantsflewoff Okay, I have: red machine, the Russian 5, road to Olympus, Tarasov's hockey techniques, tretiaks autobiography, breakaway (pinchevsky), from behind the red line, the greatest game (denault), hockey showdown (sinden), and cold war (macskimming). I'm definitely looking for English or translated resources (sadly I don't speak/read Russian), or even resources that are image heavy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!!!
Okay, thanks for clarifying. On first thought, you could try:
The Fastest Game in the World: Hockey and the Globalization of Sports, by Bruce Berglund (Berglund has previously studied Czech history, so he's more knowledgable than many American sports writers on intra-Soviet politics. Buy his book babes, I'm trying to get him to like me)
Larionov, by Igor Larionov, Jim Taylor, and Leonid Reizer
The Russian Cold: Histories of Ice, Frost, and Snow edited by Julia Herzberg, Andreas Renner, Ingrid Schierle includes translated passages by Leonid Reizer, who was very involved and wrote extensively but unfortunately I can't find a full English translation of his books for you
The Art of Goaltending, by Vladislav Tretiak
Coming Down the Mountain: Rethinking the 1972 Summit Series, edited by Brian Kennedy (includes a chapter by Iri Cermak, I also like her book The Cinema of Hockey: Four Decades of the Game on Screen)
Red Gold: Peak Performance Techniques of the Russian and East German Olympic Victors by Grigori Raiport (sports psychologist for the Soviet teams, mostly talking about the late '80s. Also super out of print. Try the internet archive or look for a pdf)
The Big Red Machine: The Rise and Fall of Soviet Olympic Champions by Yuri Brokhin
Hockey: A Global History, by Stephen Hardy and Andrew C. Holman
Home Game, Ken Dryden, (the chapter “No Final Victories”)
1972 The Summit Series: Canada vs. USSR, Stats, Lies and Videotape, The Untold Story of Hockey’s Series of the Century by Richard J Bendell, Paul Patskou, Robert MacAskill
Epic Confrontation: Canada vs. Russian On Ice: The Greatest Sports Drama of All-Time, by Greg Franke
Not a book, but I mostly use a lot of newspaper and magazine articles, and back issues of Maclean's magazine, the New Yorker, and of course the Hockey News and Sports Illustrated, are great for contemporary coverage
How else are you gonna see this stuff
Examples include pieces like Mark Mulvoy's "Boris and his boys prepare for a few friendlies", which includes a nice summary of the structure of the soviet league at the time.
Keep an eye out for articles or interviews with Brendan Shanahan, president of the Slava Fetisov fan club. Wayne and Walter Gretzky's books also discuss Anton Gretzky, their experience of the times and of traveling to the Soviet Union as Ukrainians, and biographical details about Tretiak and Larionov in particular
(UKE: the Untold Story of Hockey Legends, directed by Volodymyr Mula, is a documentary on Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian hockey that you might also enjoy. There are also a number of documentaries on '72 specifically.)
The journal Sport History Review of the Human Kinetics Journal, and the Journal of Sport History, would really be your friends for hockey history: some articles to try as starting points include
Russian Sport and the Challenges of Its Recent Historiography by Ekaterina Emeliantseva
The Central Army Sports Club (TsSKA): Forging a Military Tradition in Soviet Ice Hockey by Robert F. Baumann
Maple Leaf, Hammer, and Sickle: International Ice Hockey during the Cold War by Markku Jokisipilä
The IIHF also has some interesting historical articles, like When Soviet hockey looked to Great Britian by Andy Pott. The english language KHL site will also sometimes have articles on similar historical topics.
There are also some great theses, including
The Rebirth of Dinamo Riga: From the Glorious Soviet Past to the Kontinental Hockey League by Konstantin Fuks at the University of Turku and
Collective Hockey Against the Grit and Grind: Ice Hockey as a Reflection of Cold War Differences by Sarai Dai University of South Carolina (free pdf online)
Broader details of the Soviet sports program:
Sport in Soviet Society: Development of Sport and Physical Education in Russia and the USSR, as well as many other titles, by James/Jim Riordan. Note that Russian historians question the accuracy of his autobiography, but his other works are generally accepted.
The Olympic Games, the Soviet Sports Bureaucracy, and the Cold War: Red Sport, Red Tape by Jenifer Parks
The Olympics and the Cold War, 1948-1968: Sport as Battleground in the U.S.-Soviet Rivalry by Erin Elizabeth Redihan (Somehow multiple authors have used this title. I believe there's also an article in Human Kinetics by Hunt)
Cold War Games: Propaganda, the Olympics, and U.S. Foreign Policy (Sport and Society) by Toby C Rider (more on American actions)
Jews and the Olympic Games: The Clash Between Sport and Politics: with a Complete Review of Jewish Olympic Medallists by Paul Taylor (I include this because it gives biographical details on some key figures in hockey, like Coach Moiseyev)
I realize accessing academic journals can be harder depending where people are: if anyone wants a specific text, let me know and I'll try to find you a copy.
#if anyone is interested in particular times persons or content areas please do let me know#otherwise please remember that the ussr and russia are phenomenally large and long lasting empires#it’s big my dudes#and i might not be sure what youre looking for

Hockey Hall of Fame, Toronto (No. 9)
The Stanley Cup (French: La Coupe Stanley) is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff winner. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the "most important championships available to the sport". The trophy was commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. The entire Stanley family supported the sport, the sons and daughters all playing and promoting the game. The first Cup was awarded in 1893 to Montreal Hockey Club, and winners from 1893 to 1914 were determined by challenge games and league play. Professional teams first became eligible to challenge for the Stanley Cup in 1906. In 1915, professional ice hockey organizations National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) reached a gentlemen's agreement in which their respective champions would face each other annually for the Stanley Cup. It was established as the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1926 and then the de jure NHL championship prize in 1947.
There are actually three Stanley Cups: the original bowl of the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup", the authenticated "Presentation Cup", and the spelling-corrected "Permanent Cup" on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame. While the NHL has maintained control over the trophy itself and its associated trademarks; the NHL does not actually own the trophy but uses it by agreement with the two Canadian trustees of the cup.The NHL has registered trademarks associated with the name and likeness of the Stanley Cup, although there has been dispute as to whether the league has the right to own trademarks associated with a trophy that it does not own.
The original bowl was made of silver and is 18.5 centimetres (7.28 inches) high and 29 centimetres (11.42 inches) wide. The current Stanley Cup is topped with a copy of the original bowl, made of a silver and nickel alloy. It has a height of 89.54 centimetres (35.25 inches) and weighs 15.5 kilograms (34.5 lb). A new Stanley Cup is not made each year, unlike the trophies awarded by the other major professional sports leagues of North America. The winners originally kept it until a new champion was crowned, but winning teams currently get the Stanley Cup during the summer and a limited number of days during the season. Every year since 1924, a select portion of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff names are engraved on its bands, which is unusual among trophies. However, there is not enough room to include all the players and non-players, so some names must be omitted. Between 1924 and 1940, a new band was added almost every year that the trophy was awarded, earning the nickname "Stovepipe Cup" due to the unnatural height of all the bands. In 1947, the cup size was reduced, but not all the large rings were the same size. In 1958, the modern one-piece Cup was designed with a five-band barrel which could contain 13 winning teams per band. The oldest band is removed when the bottom band is full and preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame in order to prevent the Stanley Cup from growing, and a new blank band added to the bottom. It has been referred to as The Cup, Lord Stanley's Cup, The Holy Grail, or facetiously as Lord Stanley's Mug. The Stanley Cup is surrounded by numerous legends and traditions, the oldest of which is the winning team drinking champagne from it.
Since the 1914–15 season, the Cup has been won a combined 103 times by 20 current NHL teams and 5 defunct teams. It was not awarded in 1919 because of a Spanish flu epidemic and in 2005 because of the 2004–05 NHL lockout. It was held by nine different teams between 1893 and 1914. The Montreal Canadiens have won it a record 24 times and are the most recent Canadian-based team to win it, doing so in 1993; while the Detroit Red Wings have won it 11 times, the most of any United States-based NHL team, most recently in 2008.
