When it gets like this, I keep revisiting this time in Grade Three when my class took a field trip to a pool. It felt so much like this, raw and awful and I don't understand how.

To be fair, there was a lot going on.

It was a Friday afternoon (I can't remember a time when Fridays didn't make me anxious).

It had been about a year plus since we moved so these kids knew each other from Kindergarten and I'd met them last school year (being the new kid in a small school is fine until the novelty wears off and you're just the kid who used to be new).

The two friends I'd made in Grade Two both migrated by Grade Three.

I had to be in a bathing suit in front of these kids I didn't know very well (why are girl's bathing suits like that?).

It apparently was public knowledge that one of my classmates (let's call him N), whose mom taught at the school, had a crush on me. (How mortifying!)

That should set the scene:

A seven/eight-year-old who doesn't know how to swim, unable to stand in a four-foot pool and holding onto the ledge with all her might.

We learn how to kick from the ledge and that's fine, until we have to start gliding. I get to the buoy no problem, but on my way back to the ledge, there was no place to kick off. I don't have the momentum and I come up just short of the ledge.

I panic, I flounder. And the hand that reaches out to me is the last one I want to take. But it's do or die (literally). So I take N's hand and live to tell this story.

The class ends and we dry off and get dressed. My mom needs to go to the bathroom real quick and I stand in the hallway with the women's changing room behind me and the men's in front of me. The boy's changing room opens and three classmates see me, N and two of his "friends". The two other guys think it's the perfect opportunity to flash me, not with their own junk, though. So they grab at N's towel while he fights them off valiantly. I'm frozen in place, shocked and horrified. Until my mom's stirring in the bathroom prompts me to step into the room before I can see anything.

I try to act normal, my mom doesn't know what's up until we step back into the hallway and the fight is still ongoing. She brushes it off, maybe she reprimands them (I don't remember). But we get out of there and I think she mentions something to a teacher or other chaperone about the tussle.

Eventually everyone is ready and we pile onto a bus. I put the traumatic event behind me and then I realize two of the kids who came aren't coming back with us. We find out that their mom works at the pool. I process that they probably have access to the pool all the time and this awful feeling washes over me at the sight of the two of them waving us goodbye with lollipops in their mouths.

Now that I'm older, I find that that emotion feels a lot like jealousy. It feels a lot like I want that too.

It's more than that, though. There's something else that I haven't been able to name. It feels like I want what "they" have but at the same time I know that it's something I can never have.

I don't understand it, but it's a feeling I've become so familiar with this year. Is it that I don't think I'll ever be happy? Is it that it feels like there's no point in expecting the future to be better? Is it that I don't know how to have hope at a time like this?

Maybe it means I will always be an awkward little girl with wet hair and a weary heart.
