"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that Auston Matthews has been named the 26th captain in franchise history, succeeding John Tavares. Tavares, who has served as captain since October 2019, has been a pivotal leader both on and off the ice. He will continue to bring his veteran presence and guidance to the team as he remains an integral part of the Maple Leafs roster and leadership group. Matthews, 26, has been driven to lead since being drafted first overall in 2016. With a Hart Memorial Trophy, three Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophies, the Ted Lindsay Award, a Calder Memorial Trophy and All-Star team designations, his unwavering dedication have earned him respect within the locker room and across the league."

What is "NHL 36: Jack Zimmermann" about? : )
Hi! Okay, you know those videos the NHL makes which are basically a life in the day of? I wanted to write one about Jack just as he's about to retire. Here's a snippet...
At 40, Jack Zimmermann has a career most people dream of: three Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythe Trophies, a Hart Memorial Trophy, an Art Ross, Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, and a pioneer in many ways both in the NHL and LGBTQIA+ communities. On the verge of retirement, during his last season, we follow him through a roadie, family life, and more. Jack Zimmermann on the art of having it all and knowing when to say goodbye on NHL 36.
February 18, 8:35 a.m.
CAMERA PANS TO A YELLOW HOUSE WITH A BLUE DOOR
A voice is heard from the other side of the door.
“Shhh! Puck, stop!”
The door opens and there stands Jack Zimmermann, sockless wearing basketball shorts and a sweatshirt. Jack stands and holds his dog back by the collar.
“Au Pied,” he whispers kindly to the dog who obediently walks back inside the house.
“Hey, hello! Come on in,” he quickly says with a smile. “Good morning! Come in, please. Welcome to the Bittlemann household!”

NHL:n himoitut palkinnot – onko niitä koskaan saatu Suomeen?
Jokainen jääkiekkoilija haaveilee siitä yhdestä palkinnosta, eli Stanley Cupista. Jokainen kuitenkin arvostaa myös henkilökohtaisia tunnustuksia, sanoipa kuka mitä tahansa. Vaikka jääkiekkoa pelataan joukkueelle, ollaan kentällä myös yksilöinä.
Kukapa lätkänpelaaja ei haluaisi voittaa Maurice ”Rocket” Richard Trophy -palkintoa, joka jaetaan NHL:n parhaalle maalintekijälle. Jos tuon palkinnon voittaa, olet maailman kovin maaliruisku jääkiekossa. Sinua kadehditaan.
Art Ross Trophy
Art Ross Trophy jaetaan NHL-runkosarjan kovimmalle pistepyssylle. Eniten voittoja on ottanut tietysti Wayne Gretzky, peräti kymmenen kappaletta. Gretzky paukutti yli 200 pistettä kolme vuonna peräkkäin (1984, 1985, 1986).
Nykyaikaisen jääkiekon ehdoton kurko on Connor McDavid. McDavid on voittanut pistepörssin viisi kertaa viimeisen kahdeksan kauden aikana. Paras pistesaldo on viime vuodelta, kun runkosarjassa kertyi karmeat 152 tehopistettä.
Suomalaisia voittajia ei valitettavasti ole. Eurooppalaisia voittajia on vain Leon Draisaitl, Sedinin veljekset, Peter Forsberg sekä Jaromir Jagr.
Calder Memorial Trophy
Calder Memorial Trophy on NHL:n keltanokalle jaettava pysti. Eli palkinto annetaan siis parhaalle tulokaspelaajalle. Pysti on tullut pari kertaa suomeen, kun Pentti Lund nappasi palkinnon vuonna 1949 ja Teemu Selänne vuonna 1992.
Eniten voittoja on mennyt Kanadaan, peräti 62 kertaa.
Loistavaa suorittamista!
Frank J. Selke Trophy
Maurice ”Rocket” Richard Trophy
Vuodesta 1999 lähtien myönnetty Maurice ”Rocket” Richard Trophy myönnetään änärin kovimmalle maalipyssylle. Tämä on se palkinto, jonka penkkiurheilija muistaa.
Eniten maalipörssin voittoja on napannut Bobby Hull, peräti seitsemän kertaa. Useampia voittoja on kerännyt myös Phil Esposito (6), Charlie Conacher (5), Wayne Gretzky (5), Gordie Howe (5), Maurice Richard (5). Eikä sovi unohtaa Teemu Selänteen kahta voittoa!
Varsinaisen palkinnon on voittanut useten Alexander Ovechkin (9). Auston Matthews on voittanut palkinnon kolmesti viimeisen neljän kauden aikana. Väliin mahtuu vain Connor McDavidin voitto kaudelta 2022–23.
Onko muiden lajien superliigoissa palkintogaaloja?
Jääkiekko- ja jalkapallofanit saavat nauttia maailman parhaiden pelaajien saamista pysteistä samalla mitalla. Esimerkiksi vuodesta 1956 lähtien myönnetty Kultainen pallo on arvostettu tunnustus, jonka on voittanut useita kertoja esimerkiksi Lionel Messi ja Cristiano Ronaldo.
Muita himoittuja palkintoja on mm. Pichichi-palkinto, Valioliigan kauden paras maalintekijä, FIFA:n kultainen pallo sekä Euroopan Kultainen kenkä.
Osa palkintogaaloista televisioidaan urheilukanavilla. Suomessa myös Suomen urheilugaala järjestetään vuosittain ja se näytetään televisiossa ilmaiseksi. Kyllä jokaiselle jotakin on, jos urheilumaailman palkintokekkereitä haluaa seurata!

Pavel Bure: The Russian Rocket’s Impact on the NHL
Pavel Bure, widely known as “The Russian Rocket,” is one of the most electrifying and dynamic players to ever grace the ice in the NHL. His incredible speed, agility, and goal-scoring prowess made him a fan favorite and a feared opponent during his career. Bure’s journey from the Soviet Union to becoming an NHL superstar is a story of talent, determination, and a relentless drive to be the best.
Early Life and Rise in Soviet Hockey
Born on March 31, 1971, in Moscow, Russia (then part of the Soviet Union), Pavel Bure grew up in a sports-oriented family. His father, Vladimir, was an Olympic swimmer, and his brother, Valeri, would also go on to play in the NHL. Pavel started skating at an early age and quickly demonstrated a natural talent for hockey.
Bure honed his skills in the Soviet Union’s rigorous hockey system, joining the Central Red Army team, CSKA Moscow, at just 16 years old. Playing alongside future NHL stars like Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Mogilny, Bure quickly established himself as a scoring sensation. His performance in the Soviet Championship League and international tournaments caught the attention of NHL scouts.
The NHL Draft and the Canucks
In the 1989 NHL Draft, Pavel Bure was selected 113th overall by the Vancouver Canucks. However, his draft selection was surrounded by controversy due to the league’s complex rules regarding the eligibility of Soviet players. After a dispute and subsequent ruling, Bure’s selection by the Canucks was upheld, setting the stage for his arrival in the NHL.
Bure joined the Canucks for the 1991–92 season, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact. In his rookie season, Bure scored 34 goals and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. His explosive speed and scoring ability quickly earned him the nickname “The Russian Rocket.”
The Prime Years in Vancouver
Pavel Bure’s tenure with the Vancouver Canucks was marked by spectacular individual performances and memorable playoff runs. During the 1992–93 season, Bure became the first Canuck to score 50 goals in a season, finishing with 60 goals, a feat he repeated the following season. His ability to score from almost any position on the ice, combined with his breathtaking speed, made him one of the most exciting players in the league.
The pinnacle of Bure’s career with the Canucks came during the 1993–94 season when he led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Although the Canucks ultimately lost in seven games to the New York Rangers, Bure’s performance throughout the playoffs solidified his reputation as a clutch performer. He finished the playoffs with 16 goals, including a memorable double-overtime winner against the Calgary Flames in the first round.
A New Chapter: Florida Panthers
Injuries and contract disputes marred Bure’s later years with the Canucks, leading to his trade to the Florida Panthers in January 1999. Despite the challenges, Bure continued to prove his worth as one of the league’s top goal scorers. In his first full season with the Panthers (1999–2000), Bure led the NHL with 58 goals, earning his first of two consecutive Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies as the league’s top goal scorer.
Bure’s impact on the Panthers was immediate, helping the team reach the playoffs in 2000. However, recurring knee injuries began to take a toll on his career, limiting his ability to perform at his peak.
Legacy and Hall of Fame Induction
After brief stints with the New York Rangers, Bure retired from the NHL in 2003 due to chronic knee injuries. Despite his career being cut short, Bure’s impact on the game was undeniable. Over 702 NHL games, he scored 437 goals and 779 points, with a remarkable average of 0.62 goals per game, one of the highest in NHL history.
In 2012, Pavel Bure was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. His electrifying style of play not only thrilled fans but also inspired a new generation of players from around the world.
Pavel Bure’s journey from the Soviet Union to the NHL is a testament to his incredible talent, work ethic, and passion for the game of hockey. Known for his speed, skill, and goal-scoring ability, Bure left an indelible mark on the sport and continues to be celebrated as one of the most exciting players in NHL history. The “Russian Rocket” remains a beloved figure in the hockey world, and his legacy as one of the game’s all-time greats is secure.
