who is your favorite AA character? 👁️👁️
ziska… I hope capcom brings her back someday
#shes cool as fuck to me bc when I first played jfa I found her really frustrating to deal with#not just as Phoenix but I mean like on a personal level she is challenging because she’s so thorough#and yet I also find it fascinating that she breaks the character she’s built for herself once in a while#i 100% believe that I don’t think she would have caught on to what Phoenix was trying to do while stalling for time with engardes trial#so it’s probably a good thing edgeworth subbed in but she literally busts her ass to bring evidence to court#almost right after having a bullet extracted from her WHICH SHE ALSO PRESENTS AS EVIDENCE. thats metal as fuck ok#especially since she would technically have nothing to do with the case after edgeworth fills in and she still decided to do that anyway#maybe it was blind faith to use that evidence to win since she wasn’t there for most of the trial but still#and even if canon doesn’t give it to me I still firmly believe there’s be at least some chemistry between her and Maya#like especially if you hold it next to wrightworth that works bc there’s already a history there and majority of Phoenix and miles trying#to relearn their relationship is Phoenix coaxing out that side of Miles that he remembers from fourth grade#but with Franmaya it’s something new and they’re basically strangers to each other and one of them almost got the other convicted#and I still think that’s fascinating and it’s a damn shame thay half of the fics I find for them on ao3 is background in wrightworth fic#i did find a good one that touched on Franziska trying to win pearls approval because Pearl does hold a grudge against her#and seeing that trying to live up to perfecting even her personal relationships without getting to know Pearl to even know#why it wasn’t working feels believable when I think abt her as a character yk#myart#my art#doodles#aa#ace attorney#franziska von karma

I'm really not a ship person (nothing against shipping its just not for me usually) but something about Scott rarepairs really intrigue me
Scott rarepairs are so awesome. That’s a man who cares so deeply about those he loves and never expects to be loved back with the same caliber.
The people who he’s commonly paired with are the same people he hangs out with a lot, so they’re more inclined to be aggressive with him when not allied with him. That’s their friend! Of course they’re gonna mess with him.
The people in Scott rarepairs usually don’t talk with Scott as often, but they know his kind of humor because most of them hang out with Cleo and Gem a lot. They also tend to know from the life series that Scott is not a force to be reckoned with. That means that they have a lot of respect for Scott AND a lot of affection for people like Scott.
Something that helps is that Scott is one of the friendliest people in that social circle. I believe that myself, but I say it aloud because so many other people in that social circle have stated such, which is absolutely a testament to how pleasant Scott is to people. People are SO quick to get comfortable around Scott. Tango, Etho, Grian, Bdubs, and Skizz don’t get to talk to Scott very often, and yet they’ve all had on camera moments where they expressed how cool or sweet they find Scott to be.
“Scott’s awesome. Scott’s awesome.” - Tango during his 2nd MCC, which was at Twitchcon, when Scott found him to check on him and encourage him.
“We all need to have people we can trust no matter what’s going on. Bdubs… Scott…” - Etho during Secret Life to Cleo
“Scott is the only person on this server who I trust right now.” - Grian during Third Life
“A birthday party? That sounds- that sounds like Scott or Jimmy- no that’s Scott. Scott’s a very empathetic person.” - Bdubs answering a trivia question this past episode of the Life Series
“Smajor was this other… guy on the life series, and, every time I passed him, he’s kinda nice, and then we talked more and he’s really nice, and now I admire him, and now I like him, and now I- I really like this guy!” - Skizz on the Imp & Skizz podcast describing how he didn’t want to make connections with people for their clout when he joined Third Life, but he couldn’t help but be drawn to Scott. This is also, coincidentally, how crushes tend to develop, Skizzleman.
Scott is a very earnest and caring person, even in the life series, a death game, where that’s not particularly rewarded 100% of the time. Everybody has so much respect for Scott, both because they know that he’s a lot like Cleo and Gem and they have a lot of love and respect for Cleo and Gem and because their personal experiences with Scott have made it clear how sweet and competent he is.
I love Smajor rarepairs, because I’m not into relationships where one person is pulling all of the weight. A lot of mainstream Smajor ships reduce Scott to his relationship and let the other person have their own things going on. There tends to be a lot of focus on the other person, like they’re Scott’s whole world. Rarepairs tend to have Scott’s partner(s) treat him with reverence, which forces Scott to confront his insecurities, how he feels like he needs to earn other people’s affection.
Tango is immune to flirting, but he’s very responsive to Scott’s teasing and eager to banter with him. He doesn’t talk to Scott a lot, but he clearly really likes Scott and how earnest Scott is.
Etho absolutely thinks that Scott is incredible. You can see it in literally every single interaction they have. Etho and Scott probably talk the least out of everyone I mentioned, but I think Etho pays the most attention to Scott and has simply become endeared to him because he sees so much of Cleo and Gem in Scott.
Grian ALWAYS has a compliment for Scott. When he first met Scott, he didn’t trust Scott because “no one’s that happy”. When he learned that Scott’s just like that? Instantly loved Scott. How could you reject someone who’s clearly so happy just to spend time with you? He loves to tease Scott. I think he sees Scott as someone he can properly match wits with, what with how they both love to make short little games and are usually chaotic until they’re the least chaotic in a group and immediately become the responsible one.
Bdubs is terrified of Scott. There’s no other way to put it. Bdubs is more afraid of Scott than he is of Cleo and Gem. He commented during the fourth episode of Wild Life on how Scott is a really hard target. There was fear in his voice. He later tried to convince Tango not to go after him. He really didn’t want to upset Scott. He’s so traumatized after that game of tag. HOWEVER. Bdubs knows that Scott is a man of reason. Bdubs isn’t usually worried about attacking groups that his group is on neutral grounds with, because he knows that they’ll eventually attack him first if he doesn’t beat them to the punch. That’s how this game works. Scott doesn’t do that, and Bdubs has taken note of that and trusts that. Bdubs trusts Scott not to attack him without a reason.
Skizz? I could go on for HOURS about Skizz. Skizz has literally admitted to subconsciously treating Scott like he’s Impulse, who Skizz loves to death, who Skizz trusts when he can’t call anyone else, who Skizz kisses on the temple when they haven’t seen each other for a while. Skizz is a very kind person, but, in game, he’s not the most levelheaded person. Scott is both kind AND levelheaded, which Skizz has a lot of respect for. Scott doesn’t even have a temper to lose when it comes to verbal conversation. Hurt him or his friends and he’ll make you wish you hadn’t, sure, but words will never hurt him. I think Skizz honestly sees a lot of Impulse in Scott, whereas most people see Cleo. People compare Cleo to Scott, because they’re both petty and witty. Skizz compares Impulse to Scott because they’re both petty and survivalists. Skizz has commented many a time on how Scott is so much better than Skizz at PVP and how impressed he is that Scott can evade the entire server when they’re hunting him. Apparently, Skizz (and Impulse) thinks that Scott gives the BEST hugs. Apparently, Scott is the only person whose hugs make Skizz feel like he could fall asleep right then and there.
Another thing I’ve noticed about my favorite Smajor rarepairs is that they all love to make Scott laugh. When Tango teases Scott, it’s never about anything serious. It’s always to make Scott giggle. When he’s around Scott, Etho LOVES to do and say things that would make Cleo or Gem laugh, and they work on Scott too. It’s the “wet cat” behavior he emphasizes when he’s with Cleo and Gem, because he knows that it makes them laugh. Scott has never poked fun at Etho for being “washed up” or “a wet cat”, but he does laugh when Etho emphasizes the “lost puppy” behavior. Outside of the life series, Grian isn’t particularly interested in making Scott laugh, but he does like to impress Scott. When Grian knows Scott’s watching, he really challenges himself. I think it’s because he, himself, is very impressed with Scott. Bdubs absolutely loves to make Scott laugh. You can see it in Scott’s escape room videos. He says so many silly things just to get a reaction out of Scott. You CANNOT tell me that “Bdubs, there’s something in this room that will allow you to swim up lava” “the bed” “no, think something you can drink” “the lava” was genuine. I’m completely sure that Bdubs knew Scott meant that there was a hidden fire res potion but just wanted to be silly. Skizz LOVES Scott’s laugh. He’s said it before. Skizz loves to make Scott laugh so much. He loves hearing Scott’s laugh. It’s so giddy and full and joyous.
Maybe I’m projecting a little bit. As a lesbian, you can’t believe how grateful I am that the only traits my mother has ever asked me to find in a partner is 1) someone you can trust and 2) someone who makes you laugh. She doesn’t ask for my partner to be rich or cisgender or a man or conventionally attractive or of a certain race or religion. That’s kind of what makes me love Smajor rarepairs so much. They respect and trust Scott, and they love to make him laugh.
#this is SO much longer than i bet you were asking for#i’m so sorry#this wasn’t supposed to become such a ramble#thank you for the ask <3#i have a lot of feelings about many smajor rarepairs#smajor#scott smajor#trafficblr#trafficshipping#grian#tangotek#ethoslab#etho#Bdubs#bdouble0#bdoubleo100#skizzleman#snowbugs#emberfrost#scottho#pesky poppies#snowangels#skizzscott#do scott and bdubs have a pairing name#brief mentions of cleo gem and impulse#impulse and scott are also a fantastic pairing but i had less evidence of them#other than that impulse clearly trusts scott as a teammate this season#after a season of getting his butt kicked by scott#and another season of being scott’s ally#he’s gotten super bold this season because he trusts scott to have his back

Thinking about how present Apple is in a Semi Charming Kind of Life. How she’s woven into Darling’s days, built into her world. There’s no world where Apple isn’t there, stopping by her dorm or dazzling the class or just hanging out with Daring when Darling approaches him.
Thinking about how rare Darling is in the original books. How Apple describes her for one scene only, how she’s a fleeting moment of a character. Dazzling, enchanting, but only there for the second and then gone, out of the story and narration. After all, out of sight out of mind. Right?
Thinking about Dragon Games, and how Apple never really apologized for hurting her, but Darling never asked for one. About Way Too Wonderland, when Darling was the one to show up to Apple’s club when no one else did. About the kiss, and how the first words out of Apple’s mouth were about Daring. Did she know? Probably not, but how could she not? All the feelings present for her over time, taken for granted and brushed aside or never noticed in the first place. About the last scene of the two, side by side and smiling. Did Darling tell her, once the dust settled? How much she meant, how much she thought about that kiss before it happened?
Thinking about how Apple’s entire character revolves around the desperate facade she’s trying to maintain to make people like her, and it made her miss the one person who always did.
#‘dappling aren’t an angst ship’ IM HITTING U W A SHOVEL#<that wasn’t directed at anyone it was a general statement not trying to start anything😭#anyway like???? did we watch the same show????#APPLE U EVIL LITTLE LESBIAN#U HAD THE PERFECT GIRL PINING FOR U THE WHOLE SERIES AND U SPENT IT LONGING FOR RAVEN IM-#ever after high#eah#apple white#darling charming#dappling#appling#been thinking abt this for a while tbh#like the references to apple every time darlings in charge of the narration r insane#and compare that to apple mentioning her twice and both times as darings little sister#she’s better than me i would’ve crashed out if my crush pulled that shit#‘there’s now textual evidence for dappling’ what’s all this then☝️#ALSO#the last time we see darling she’s BESIDE APPLE#but apple? she gets her own scenes independent of darling in epic winter#while darling only has the one

Wei Wuxian and Narrative Agency – Part One
For Xiantober Day One: Genius… albeit stretching the prompt so it refers to MXTX and MDZS itself, but at the end of the day it’s still about WWX – so no harm done!
(Part Two | Part Three | Full version on AO3)
The narrative is a very active player in MDZS’ story. How it presents information, what it chooses to show and omit, often reflects important facets of its themes and characters – Nie Huaisang, for instance, is so good at hiding behind his mask that not even the narrative can hold him accountable; the present day’s storyline as a murder mystery and the slow reveal of information about the past both prompt the reader to think critically about the truth of events, when the importance of thinking critically is an important theme; and the dangers not thinking critically (and instead basing conclusions on rumours without much evidence) are shown by tricking unquestioning readers into the very same trap the cultivation world falls into, as the information given by the title, summary and in-universe rumours – which contradicts how we see actually Wei Wuxian act – turns out to be false.
But nowhere do I love this trait more than in its treatment of Wei Wuxian – and, more specifically, in its way of emphasising his agency. We’re not just told how much his active choices define his character, and we’re not just shown this in-universe through his personality, worldview and the events he causes. I’d argue that this aspect goes a step further, and shapes the structure of the out-of-universe narrative as well.
There are two main ways this happens: one, in how the aspects of Wei Wuxian’s life that are shown and hidden directly tell us what’s important about his character (which is good writing but isn’t necessarily tied to this shaping of the narrative), which is what we’ll explore today; and two, how what’s shown and hidden reflects what Wei Wuxian himself prefers to dwell on, resulting in the narrative respecting his own thoughts and feelings on matters (which very much is tied to it). We’ll explore this at a later date.
But as for now – let’s explore my favourite aspect of MDZS.
(Here, narrative agency will be considered the ability of a character to meaningfully influence their events and the story they’re in.)
Tragedy, Circumstance, Choice
If we simply look at Wei Wuxian’s backstory in a vacuum, it seems almost typically tragic. His parents died in circumstances beyond his control, he was left alone as a child with nobody to care for him, he was forced to grow up fending for himself on the streets, he was faced with abuse when he finally was taken in… as with all typical woobies, everything simply happened to him, and none of it was good. It’s just another example of the lack of agency being used for sympathy points, right?
…Except there’s one problem with that idea. We don’t actually see any of this.
It would’ve been easy to start the flashbacks during these times. We’re telling the story of Wei Wuxian in (largely) chronological order, and these are likely important experiences for him! But instead of starting in his street days, or evenat the moment Jiang Fengmian took him in*, we start at the lectures in the Cloud Recesses. That’s not even something mentioned in, and therefore something that’s able to disprove, the rumours at the start of the novel. So why is this the case?
Well, there are multiple reasons – the main one being that MDZS is also Lan Wangji’s (and Wangxian’s) story, and having the flashbacks open with their first meeting is very satisfying. But I want to focus on something else.
This period doesn’t have to be shown, because what happens to Wei Wuxian, especially out of his control, isn’t what’s important about his character.
We’re not even at Lotus Pier here, where Wei Wuxian certainly has more agency than he would’ve had as a young child, but where the harm caused by Madame Yu is still completely out of his control. Here, he has agency! Though there are consequences, he is free to act, and what happens to him is a result of those actions and not of circumstance. Yes, he gets punished more than others who also take those same actions (due to classism); yes, it’s not his choice to be picked on by Lan Qiren in class (yet look how he responds, twisting the situation to his advantage and ending up tricking Lan Qiren into letting him leave, which is what he wanted to do. He is not at all helpless here!); yes, these choices have been influenced by his learned mindset from Madame Yu that punishment is arbitrary and will happen anyway, so you may as well do what you want regardless. But there is cause-and-effect here. It’s not circumstantial tragedy.
Therefore, instead of our first impression of past!Wei Wuxian being that of an unfortunate woobie, it’s of someone who has the freedom, ability and will to choose and act (and that’s after these initial tragic events have taken place). This is compounded by the fact that before we see any of his backstory, we get a similar impression of him in the present day.
If the purpose of his tragic past was to earn him sympathy points, to make us pity him due to how much he was influenced by events out of his control, this would’ve been a terrible way of going about it… and it’s this that betrays the true reason for its existence. Because now, the flashbacks instead show us how little these tragedies define who he is! From the very start, Wei Wuxian isn’t someone defined by circumstances out of his control, but rather by who he is as a person and by what choices he makes in the present day (which is both a mindset in-universe, and a nice little out-of-universe detail that lines up! Because out-of-universe, this means he’s not defined by sympathy points from a backstory, but rather by his great character writing… aka, by who he is as a person and what choices he makes). And this refusal to be defined by tragedy is a conscious choice on his part, too – but we’ll explore that more later.
The important thing is that this idea of Wei Wuxian isn’t because of what exists in his past, it’s because of what parts of his past are shown to us (as well as what he chooses to do, with agency, in the present).
Now, if this relationship between what’s displayed and what’s omitted was just a one-time thing, I might’ve considered it a cool detail or a nice way to establish a character, but not something the narrative is actively focusing on. But it’s a pattern that continues throughout the flashbacks. What, arguably, are the two other most important times in Wei Wuxian’s life where he doesn’t have enough agency to meaningfully influence his circumstances? His three months in the Burial Mounds (before escaping – he managed to assume some control of the circumstances but not enough to substantially reduce his suffering in his time there), and his loss and death during the First Siege. And we’re not shown either of them! We skip to when Wei Wuxian has emerged from the Burial Mounds and is torturing the Wens, or we skip to the present day – both times he has agency once more, because, again, what he’s like without it doesn’t matter enough to be shown.
Furthermore, I’d argue this does actually contrast the other tragic events we see in Wei Wuxian’s later life. Things do go horribly wrong, but it’s either due to choices he knows the consequences of (see: rescuing the Wen Remnants in the first place), or instances where he still has some ability to act in the situation and influence it within the limitations. If he’d had no ability to influence circumstances at Qiongqi path, he would have died in the ambush; if he’d been unable to do that at Nightless City, he would’ve died then, too (of course Lan Wangji helped him escape as well). The attention drawn to him losing control of his actions in both instances is very interesting, but intentional or not, it’s still his actions influencing the plot. And that influence happens to be detrimental. The very ability to act and influence, at a base level, is not taken away (though, of course, that doesn’t make these events any less tragic).
So, so far, the narrative seems to be telling us that the ability to act and choose is key to Wei Wuxian’s character. And it’s doing it through omitting his moments without agency in favour of instead showing us his moments with it.
Let’s see if this is echoed in the text itself before we go further – because even with this pattern, nothing would end up mattering if Wei Wuxian’s agency wasn’t actually that important to the story itself. But thankfully it is, and that first impression we get of Wei Wuxian in the Cloud Recesses turns out to very much be accurate! Though there are defining circumstances out of his control that occur, such as the massacre of Lotus Pier, the majority of the important events of his life are due to his own choices. He didn’t happen to be forced to cease traditional cultivation and solely use guidao, didn’t happen to lose his Golden Core in a fight with Wen Zhuliu or due to some force in the Burial Mounds, it was his own choice to give it and his spiritual powers away. He didn’t tragically happen to get targeted by the cultivation world, it was a result of him acting on his morals and protecting the Wen remnants (a choice which he was fully aware of the implications of). He isn’t a protagonist to whom things simply occur, and that activeness and agency is my favourite thing about him.
That’s not to say that the times Wei Wuxian doesn’t have agency, or feels like he doesn’t have any, don’t exist at all, either – but they are rare enough to have attention directly drawn to them in his internal narration:
Or else what could he do? He could do nothing. He was powerless. Lotus Pier had been destroyed, both Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu were gone, and Jiang Cheng had disappeared as well. He was the only one left, alone, with not even a sword in his hands. He didn’t know anything, he couldn’t do anything! For the first time, he discovered how little his power was. In front of something as large as the QishanWen Sect, it was the same as a mantis trying to stop a chariot. - Chapter 59, EXR translation
(And even in this circumstance, note that he still does force himself to act – to carry on searching for Jiang Cheng, to place his faith in Wen Ning – and does accomplish his goal (albeit with the help of others)! So even in dire situations, he isn’t simply passive. This is actually also the case with his time in the Burial Mounds, almost certainly the First Siege, and even his days on the streets as well (Chapter 20: he did actively fight with dogs to get food despite their danger and his growing fear of them, rather than just waiting and hoping to somehow receive some more). He can’t influence or immediately influence his circumstances, but that doesn’t stop him from trying.)
Overall, although they do influence him, Wei Wuxian is very much who he is in spite of his circumstances, not because of them. We’re shown the importance of his agency both in-universe by the major impacts his choices have on himself and the plot, as well as by narrative presentation – important periods where he lacks the ability to meaningfully influence anything are often mentioned but not directly shown, which suggests that such moments and circumstances aren’t as important to understanding Wei Wuxian’s character as moments where he does have this agency are. And I’d argue this works very well. Depending on the version of the story you consume, you may end up having different interpretations as to how much circumstances were at play nearer the end of his life – but nobody comes out of MDZS thinking about Wei Wuxian, the poor bearer of yet another generically tragic backstory.
(Part Two | Part Three | Full version on AO3)
—
*We are shown this moment in more detail in Chapter 23… but even then, it’s through the framing of Wei Wuxian remembering Jiang Yanli’s narration, not through a flashback proper or even him remembering the experience itself!
#there are three parts to this#part two dwelling on how wwx not dwelling on tragedy is a conscious choice#part three about how that choice and wwx’s preferences are ALSO behind what’s shown and what’s not#i originally wanted to post them all at once but life was very busy and they haven’t been finished yet#and i wanted to release SOMETHING on this day (it is after midnight but i haven’t slept yet and in a lot of timezones it’s not yet)#judging by the current length of it it’s probably better to be posting individual parts anyway…#so here we go#a complete version will br put on ao3 when done#also because i’m not sure where to put it in the meta – i’m aware external circumstances did impact this too#eg mxtx not wanting to write power-up/transformation sequences influencing her not to write wwx’s time in the burial mounds#i’m also aware a lot of this could be writing efficiency and not the deeper meanings i’ll (mostly later) assign to it#ultimately there’s not enough evidence either way to say if this was intentional or not#(i don’t doubt mxtx is an amazing writer but *i* feel i’m overanalysing while writing this which i do tend to do)#but even if it wasn’t it’s still a part of the story#and it still remains one of the things i love it the most#so i WILL explore it (taking the approach of death of the author here – i do believe context is important but i just love this throughline-#-so much)#xiantober#xiantober day 1#mdzs meta#my meta#wei wuxian#wwx#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#魔道祖师#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#gdc

The moment Erik finds out about Toth’s death is actually kind of terrifying because I would not put it past that angsty sopping wet dog of a man to abandon all reason/rational thought and just storm up to where Hans is being held to kill him.

i’m just so annoyed with this idea that leah isn’t being intentional. she posts up in that hoh bed every week & it genuinely saved her with chelsie & quinn’s hoh weeks despite her being the clear & obvious target. she pulled enemy #1 off the block and everyone RESPECTS her for the movie, AND she got her two simps to forgive her within 24 hours. she seemed to notice mj loves physical affection and has ramped up the last week or so in touching her casually & has been pushing for them to be more in lock step. she has a great relationship with t’kor despite t’kor campaigning AGAINST her for a hot minute. she has been part of every vote flip but the very first and has landed in a better spot almost every single time.
do i think she doesn’t always realize how much she rambles? yeah absolutely. do i think she doesn’t always realize how mean some of her shit talking can be bc she just really loves to gossip? yes, i think that’s her biggest flaw in this game. but the thing is - her filibustering doesn’t turn people off in that house! even when she’s frustratingly quiet on strategy, t’kor mj rubina angela and chelsie all love listening to her ramble to a certain extent, bc she’s very personable! she Said going into the game that she wanted to align with women & maniplate men and she’s playing a very decent floater game and this constant “she’d be good if she was doing this on purpose” thing is so grating. she is clearly doing this on purpose!! everyone says they want a good floater game, they want a flirty player, but when leah does it AND has win equity she’s suddenly “not doing it on purpose” come on!
#bb26#this was prompted by the stockwatch but this has been a problem all season w outside the house perception#i think right now her chelsie and cam are in the best spots to win and that is because they have strategically maneuvered very well despite#being left out of a vote flip and have excellent social games. i find the discounting of her and cam’s intentional work to be frustrating#and just. um. weird! why do u think they’re not doing this on purpose? genuinely what’s the evidence.#also for once it wasn’t taran that annoyed me re: leah he defended her it was the girls that were annoying me#leah peters

Despite lack of any canon evidence I think Jing Yuan is one of those mythical Chinese parents who is very externally supportive of their kid (still doesn’t outright say “I love you” to him. This man is still emotionally repressed) and has never tried to pressure him outside of pushing him during training. Unfortunately on account of his job and reputation the rest of the Luofu does that for him so even though all he wants for Yanqing is for him to grow up happy and healthy, Yanqing is being crushed under the weight of expectations from others and himself as the general’s disciple, retainer, and ward.
#I say lack of canon evidence because uh. he did let his boy become a child soldier.#like he undoubtedly loves him but. sir why did you let your 14 year old child into the army.#also yanqing’s view of debt to him for raising him and the pressure to get results to prove he wasn’t a mistake#pika’s ramblings#honkai star rail#hsr#jing yuan#yanqing

They both have premium balls (at least, Clavell wears some)

And have similar ball throws…
The old man yaoi allegations continue.

I gotta say the most boring people are the people who dedicate their lives to hating something. Like okay cool you think my ship is stupid, so why do you have so much to say about it? I’m talking about character archetypes and how the characters fit the roles set by the precedent of other media. I’m sorry if you don’t think they’re in-love, but I’m not going to stop talking about that their relationship references romantic tragedies, classic songs, and romcoms.
#yes this is about antis that don’t know how to scroll.#buddie#destiel#gelphie#I don’t care that you thought Buck was made for Temu.#or that you don’t think that entirety of Destiel’s relationship wasn’t strong enough evidence#or that Gelphie fits the romantic archetypes in musical theater.

my favorite thing about gladiator (2000) is that no matter what scene is playing, throughout the entirety of the film, you never forget why Maximus is doing what he’s doing. it’s a story about tyranny and corruption, and even while we focus on the emperor and the horrors of the ring, Maximus’ fight for justice cannot be erased. Behind every scene is the ghost of his murdered wife and son and they are truly the heart of the story. and that’s something that I couldn’t help but feel was absent from the second film.
something just felt so off. maybe im just being too critical because of my love for the first film but I felt there was no heart in the sequel. the first battle introducing Lucius and his loss was beautiful but not even the cgi of the ships/sea could make up for how rushed it felt. there were times where I forgot about Lucius altogether. the emperor twins didn’t fill me with dread as Joaquin Phoenix still does! but i get it, they’re not the same. im just bitter because I know they’re both great actors and I feel like they could have done more if given the opportunity. there was just so much going on everywhere—feels like they purposely crammed so much into the movie and just went with it. even shots like where Maximus is walking through the fields and touching the wheat, it felt so out of place there. it was just a reminder of how the second film refused to allow such easy/intimate pacing. that final scene cutting back to the first movie was a clear reminder of this difference between the two.
I also feel like by making Lucius the son of Maximus, it really ruined his character, his memory. Maximus is many things, but ultimately he signifies loyalty, justice and hope for an honest Rome. now we learn that he was having an affair behind his wife’s back? it was truly awful to take in. Idk I think the worst crime a sequel can commit is to blatantly dishonor the first film and I feel like they did just that.
#and DENZEL WAS SERVING#that’s literally all they let him do! so much disrespect m#the writing just felt so off. so rushed. they should have made it into 2 parts ?#why couldn’t they make Lucius the son of someone else? he still would have been just as significant?? such a wild choice#gladiator 2#gladiator 2024#gladiator 2000#movies#favorite movies#films#rants#denzel washington#pedro pascal#russell crowe#ridley scott#I love love Ridley Scott but this wasn’t my favorite#just more evidence to persuade people to stop making remakes and sequels.#film

sometimes I think about Edgeworth keeping a steel samurai fig in his office and I get a little bonkers about it. this is the guy raised to be Perfect, who doesn’t even wear a prosecutors badge because it would look less sophisticated, who wears the same neckwear as his mentor so as to uphold a cohesive image for the family.
and while I think part of it is due to his stubbornness (Oldbag delivered the gift to his office and carrying it out would show that it bothers him or that he cares), I think the more interesting part is that it shows some level of growth, fledgling as it is. his office is the heart of his professional life, and suddenly he’s allowed sentimentality that has nothing to do with his career to have a place in there. immediately behind his desk, no less—one of the first things one might see when they walk in.
and once you notice that, it’s clear that Edgeworth’s stuffy formal office is full of sentimentality; he’s just usually better at disguising it as professionalism. the first examples that come to mind are the framed bratworth suit and his custom chess board. the steel samurai fig, though, is one of the first things in there that he can’t justify as a trophy of his career or an activity that stimulates the mind. it’s just something he likes, and he allows it to live in his heart.
#I already have a fic about this but evidently I wasn’t done getting my feelings out#I love him……#miles edgeworth#c thinks
