There is something very cathartic (lol) to me about imagining them as exes or as still antagonistic to one another as long as the relationship develops and they are changed by one another

Ik vld ended with everyone having this achingly cold and distant relationship with each other and kl more or less disliking each other and its all sooo depressing but…. ok fuhgetabout it for a second…. imagine if the chemistry between kl was still hot like a boiling stew a la s1 but they just grew to hate each other lol….. ^_^ teehee just playing around in my mind a little bit okay? Ofc there is still begrudging respect but basically they just continue to annoy one another and it gets worse. A lot of it due to mutual envy for the established reasons….. lance envies the respect granted to Keith + Keith’s stats and keith envies lance’s friendship (which Lance denies him)…. of course that’s only the foundation for the dislike but things compound …. over time Keith is able to make friends with hunk and pidge who try to convince him lance isn’t so bad but KL try to give each other a shot more than once and it ends up bad. Lance starts leveling up his skills and keith begins to compete with him a la sasuke post first itachi encounter minus the slipping into the darkness, and also its much more indirect. He uses Lance as motivation and vice versa, but they never talk about it bc they don’t talk. There is no pining but there is a dull sadness. Some things never seem to fucking work

The info doc says that the theme of the zine is canonverse, does that mean you're strictly looking for concepts that could be considered canon compliant other than Klance not actually being canon? Or will you potentially be accepting submissions that fit in the VLD-verse (ie, no modern AUs, Regency AUs, etc) but are otherwise canon-divergent (for example, Galra!Keith AUs)?

Hi, thank you so much for the question! When we say canonverse, we're including both canon compliant and canon divergent-- but for us, canon divergent refers to plot point deviation. A good example of this would be a season four story line where Keith stays as part of Voltron, instead of joining the Blade. It still exists within the bounds of canon, but deviates from the formal plot points of the show. Something like a Galra!Keith story would still fall under AUs (even if it is a canon inspired AU), and therefore not within the scope of our theme. We hope that clears things up, but feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

I know keith isnt "canonically" gay, but come on. he's so.... you know. the way he LOOKS at lance... COME ON. I dont think he qualifies enough to be in the poll, unless you wanna argue the marketing team using klance to appeal to the fandom (ie. the hot topic shirts). I mostly say this because i love them so dearly and i'm tired of pretending i dont. also i FULLY (personally) believe that klance does qualify as bait, specifically how they used their relationship to try and keep people hooked then by the end of the show they barely interact or really even seem like friends. maybe not bad rep (because it's not even rep/canon), but def soooo queerbaity.

okay so i got this ask like as soon as i woke up and i was like HUH bc i forgot about last night :'))

after some consideration, of the monsters:

Kevin would be Shiro, Neil would be Keith, Nicky would be Lance, Andrew would be Hunk, and Aaron would be Pidge. (none of these assignments has anything to do with shipping purposes. like i'm not saying neil and nicky would be klance? i just wanna make that clear?)

Anyhow you can think otherwise, i don't mind! But to me, these just make sense.... I will explain myself below.

Kevin is the slightly older mentor to Neil (the shiro to neil's keith) who is very traumatized by his time with a Bunch of Evil Shits and has gray hair and had his hand (arm) ruined by the enemy! He learns and grows and tries to make his team the best it can be. He never wants to stop until the ravens (galra) are defeated! He's scared bc he's far from home but he's brave as hell anyway! Braver than he should have to be, he's just in his 20s. PLEASE GIVE THIS MAN A BREAK (and also he's separated from his bf. ik kevjean isn't canon but let me make this connection anyway bc they're canon to me)

Neil is the hotheaded asshole who actually sorta wants to be friends with people but has the social skills of a raccoon who was shoved into a trash can and shaken around for, oh, ten years or so. He looks up to Kevin, wants to be like him, but knows he could NEVER fill his shoes! And he doesn't want to! He wants to help Kevin, not be Kevin. (getting the quote wrong for sure but the 'one of us should make it and i want it to be you' kinda mindset is so keith? keith literally almost died to KEEP EVERYONE SAFE!!!! LIKE NEIL'S STUPID MARTYR ASS)

Nicky is the sweet, funny one who cares deeply about everyone and who gets the least consideration from the rest no matter how he tries? (the man willingly moved away from his family (ERIK) to take care of people who don't give a shit about him (supposedly), like lance who was taken from his family to fight to save the world? like... come on.) he's unapologetic about who he is and tries to get along with everyone, for the most part. but he has no problem biting back one someone starts smth. (ie. his beef with Seth and Allison) He is misunderstood, bc while he's outgoing and friendly he also has another side that's just straight-up Traumatized. Like... he's not all jokes. He's just hiding behind them.

Andrew is is strong and is largely a Protector. People misunderstand him because of things outside of his control, by this I mean Andrew is 'evil and crazy,' but it's because of the drugs that he's on bc he was fiercely protective of his cousin. He cares about his people and wants to protect them. (Like Hunk is rightly scared and Andrew acts apathetic, but they do care. That's the important part.) I'm not saying Andrew has a secret heart of gold and he's a Sweet Lil Cinnamon Roll or all the shit people used to say about Hunk (bc let's be honest, making the fat brown character into a uwu baby is rage inducing) but he cares. OH ALSO THEY BOTH HAVE A FEAR OF HEIGHTS!!!! (or hunk did at the beginning anyhow!) Also this is unrelated but I think Andrew would enjoy having a bayard. It could turn into lots of different knives? sign him up : )

Aaron is green. (i was gonna leave it at that to be funny but that would be mean to aaron) So... Aaron is Andrew's everyone's annoying sibling who's actually really smart but also is a dumbass at the same time. He's got ulterior motives to be there. (Aaron plays exy to get his education, Pidge is part of voltron to find her dad and brother.) And Aaron is going into the medical field which is science related, thusly... assigned green paladin by Moi.

Anyway, it just fits. I could probably go into even more detail but I'd rather be dead than discuss this show at length bc I'm not a really voltron fan. I love the characters and the first three seasons. that's where it stops for me. the rest of the show makes me wanna die. lol i couldn't even tell you what happens after s3. i've blocked it all of that shit from my memory. :')

going over that really notorious Klance fanfic Dirty Laundry on the podcast and I'm fucking tired of sitting on these thoughts for so long so here's a rundown because I am trying to sleep but can't because I'm thinking about this shit fic:

accusations of ableist and racist stereotypes aside (meaning EVEN IF we assume these accusations are false) this fic has some of the worst (sincere) writing I've ever seen. not hyperbole. not exaggeration.

any time someone brings up this fic they talk about how the author was cruelly harassed into deleting it, but upon digging the "meanest" thing I could find was a message from a Latine person addressed to the author which, albeit heated, did not insult the author in any way beyond saying "you fucking white people" and simply pointed out their problems with the fic requesting they delete it for being racist.

the only time anyone speaks Spanish is when they are angry or emotional, and half the time it's grammatically incorrect google translate Spanish

it's just The Secret Life of Bees but with Klance

the word "obviously" is used in every other paragraph

basic timeline and setting mistakes ie Keith and Lance have known each other since high school; Lance went to Grossling High in Arizona yet Keith has never been to Arizona and also met Lance at college in Oregon

the author clearly has no idea how old the characters are supposed to be. the 70 year old woman is described as "old and withered," and the 2 year old can't walk and needs to be spoonfed.

at several instances the Mexican characters are referred to as "Spanish"

setting changes from chapter to chapter. they're in the middle of the Arizona desert yet they apparently live on farmland that has "rolling yellow fields" and livestock breeding and large, dense deciduous forests along the highway - forests that also have lakes in the middle of them - lakes that have currents like rivers, and are also cold enough to give you hypothermia in t-shirt weather

other basic writing mistakes, like Keith noticing Lance's kidney scar the first time he sees him shirtless, yet failing to notice any scar on his donee despite him being introduced with no shirt on

the author mixes up Lance and Keith's names frequently

often the characters will act completely differently than they are described. Abuela had a pretty characterful introduction sequence and then we're given a description of her that contradicts what we've just read

we are constantly told what a good mother Rosa is despite her not standing up to her homophobic husband when he slights their bisexual son for being bisexual, doesn't stand to defend Keith from Abuela's homophobia until Keith runs out and steald a car, gets angry when her long-lost daughter returns home, and acts cold towards her six-year-old granddaughter, both of whom she did not know were alive or dead up until that point... I could go on

Keith apparently was born in Korea but somehow ended up in the US foster care system as a baby. there are certainly scenarios that could lead to this happening, but we're never given an explanation. idk maybe the author didn't realize Korea also has foster care systems.

characters are introduced and given backstories then promptly discarded when they are done serving the Klance relationship; ie Benji's cancer survivor backstory doesn't actually matter and is only there to give Keith an excuse to touch Lance's skin. after this, he barely shows up.

Sophia. like the entire fucking thing with Sophia. I am actually too angry to properly articulate my thoughts on this but basically she's treated as a pariah for getting pregnant at 17 and getting kicked out of the house by her father; we are meant to think this is justified. the only one who sympathizes with her is Abuela, who is a homophobe who we're supposed to disagree with.

the autistic character is referenced as autistic briefly only in order to add to the struggles Sophia faced as a young mother. otherwise, Alexi does not matter at all to the story. after her introductary scenes, she disappears from the story altogether.

the writing just sucks in general. we are told stuff instead of being able to draw conclusions on our own, even the most obvious things, the similes and metaphors are terrible

speaking of which, the perspective is never consistent. it various omniscient to third person limited from Keith's perspective to Lance's, yet while we think we are in one perspective we get things that only the other's perspective could know definitively, but if it's supposed to be omniscient, we get opinions that HAVE to be from one character's perspective... it's a constant problem

so so so so so so much more wow this fic is bad

the team trying team bonding again like fighting off the gladiators and defending one another and expecting a repeat of last time (ie shiro lasting longer than the rest (& klance fucking w each other)) but somehow shiro gets hit and it gets down to klance and lance is going ham w his gun and defending keith w his shield and keith is doing the same w his sword then BOOM lance pulls out his sword and starts slashing the gladiators down and keith gets all awestruck and gets hit and lance wins the end :)

As someone who was in fandom since like, the 4kids dub - then took a break and came back to the show years later - a lot of it has to do with a couple factors.

During the first go around when fandom was building out Sanji and Zoro were the only "hot" straw hats. That's not a knock on ppl shipping things for shallow hot reasons is gucci lord knows I've done it but like let's be real this was def a factor. Luffy wasn't "hot" and neither do/did ppl consider Ussop hot.

Sanji was more well rounded as a char than Luffy, this is a consequence of Oda's earlier storytelling. idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not but while I freaking ADORE the Romance Dawn trio the earlier chapters/episodes of One Piece are a bit thin and more straight forward action shounen. Zoro's backstory is pretty by-the-numbers, Luffy's backstory is also a mix of about him/about Shanks and not super fleshed out, Ussop is when we start to see a more fleshed out take on a backstory (but again naysayers say Ussop is ugly). Zoro's backstory is so tragedy free and mundane compared to other chars ppl are still convinced it's a fakeout and Kuina was secretly murdered by the World Government - r/onepiece is covered in these theories. Basically, when Sanji appeared he was a perfect "woobie"; thorough and tragic backstory, plus hot? Perfect woobie sad boi to project on and/or ship with (fandom loves shipping archetypes see migratory slash fandom for more on that)

Something that often happens in fandom is when a fandom has A Ship or The Fandom Ship (ie the big ship that seemingly the entire fandom ships) new fans will automatically gravitate towards that ship b/c it already has a built in community to interact with. I've seen this happen a lot with ships like Sterek (Teen Wolf) or Klance (Voltron). It's simply easier for new fans plus you have the Big Shipping Base coloring the perspective of new fans and how they'll see the media piece with pre-determined bias towards The Ship.

In more recent fandom discourse there's a lot of discouragement to ship Luffy with Zoro specifically b/c of the aroace handcanon for Luffy (which for some reason doesn't apply to luffy's most popular ship lawlu which has loads of explicit fic, doujin and fanart) not saying ppl can't headcanon luffy as aroace do your thing, spark your joy, just that I've seen this used as reason why you "can't/shouldn't" ship Luffy with Zoro in fanon

There's other factors involved, like fans liking the dynamic of enemies to lovers or rivals to lovers which with some flexibility zosan can fit. They do have some good moments in Wano that made me go "yeah I get it" but Wano started airing in 2019 and zosan has been The Ship for OP (western) fandom since the show starting airing in 1999.

In terms of OPLA there's also the intersection of Luffy being played by a visibly brown actor - when it comes to latin chars in media it's been my experience if they're light skinned they get exotified and hypersexualized (Poe from Star Wars, any char played by Pedro Pascal) and if they're Black or Brown they get desexualized and dismissed (Scott from Teen Wolf, Luffy from OPLA, Amaro from SVU). I think the exception I've seen is Lance from Voltron but his characterization in fandom was riddled with stereotypical issues that I don't even wanna get into.

This isn't like a ~callout~ or anything for zosan or any other ships mentioned or any specific headcanons what-have-you. I get why people ship zosan - sterek, klance, etc - and I so do not care if ppl ship this or that like it's all gucci

This is more a general discussion on fandom trends to explore the "why" of it's popularity and prominence in OP fandom from a fandom wizard of old.

So glad for your latest post about zosan because I started 1pc FULLY expecting to be bowled over by their interactions for how prevalent the ship is in the fandom and I’ve just….. been so confused about it… and wondering if I’m missing something…. like it’s not enemies to lovers, they’re not even rivals, they’re just like. I didn't know ANYTHING about one piece when I watched opla (I didn't even know they were pirates) so I def didn't know about zsn. I walked away from the live action thinking 'damn the captain and first mate are NOT normal about each other' and 'luffy is sanji's little meow meow <3". I didn't even consider zoro and sanji as a dynamic outside of 'they're both trying to be the prettiest belle at the ball so that luffy will look at them'..... but I didn't really actively ship either. not even zolu (surprising I know)

upon learning about zsn I thought ok. this is clearly because I haven't watched the anime / read the manga. obviously there's something i'm missing. I read 400 chapters of the manga and am currently 450 episodes into the anime. there is obviously still something i'm missing because like you said, i'm seeing irritable coworkers. i'm not denying that they respect each other & care for each other as nakama but like...................like..................LIKE??

I'm never been a hate shipper, nor am I predisposed to ship things bc 'hot'. nothing against people who do obviously but my track record of otps is the exact opposite of the zsn dynamic. and going into the series not even knowing they were a popular ship. I have tried to see it (and obvi in the hate ship hot sex way I can see it) but other than that I have accepted that I will never get it. luffy x zoro & sanji x usopp on the other hand.....

Lance is sitting alone in one of the lounges on the Atlas. He looks up from his tablet at Keith.

“Yeah?” he answers. “Uh, you can come in? It’s a common room, mullet.”

Keith is wringing his hands. “Okay I should just say this so–Shiro and I were–ugh.”

“What?” Lance chuckles. “You look nervous, Keith what’s going on?”

“I’m from Texas, Lance.”

He rolls his eyes. “Gasp. Shock. Horror. Keith, how dare you keep this secret from your team,” he deadpans.

“I speak Spanish. I mean, I understand Spanish. I understand like contextual things I just can’t speak back fluently and I–”

“Do you want lessons or something? I can give you some fun Cuban swears and slang words.”

“I know…” Keith hesitates. “I know contextual stuff. I’ve snuck into night clubs in Austin to see some concerts and shows… Some of the were drag shows. So I know slang.”

Lance doesn’t respond.

“I heard you and Veronica talking.”

“Oh.”

“I wasn’t trying to listen in. You two were arguing really loud and you can’t just un-hear things, right? But I think you weren’t saying it in English for a reason, and Shiro was saying you probably had this expectation of privacy—I didn’t tell him what I heard, but I heard it. So it’s not fair to like… lie by omission, and pretend I don’t know what I know.”

Lance nods. “That’s definitely… yeah I would want to know and I wouldn’t have been happy if you hadn’t said anything.”

“So… I know that you’re bisexual. And you haven’t told your parents,” Keith sits down next to Lance on the couch. “Veronica was really mad about that. Are you two going to be okay?”

Lance rolls back his shoulders, rubbing his neck. “Yeah, she just wanted me to say something before the Atlas left Earth. I had this pact that if I ever got on an off-planet mission from the Garrison I had to come out if I hadn’t already.”

“Makes sense.”

“I probably should have then, I just didn’t really think that they’d get it. ‘Hey, so I know I’m going on a date with a space Princess, but I also like dudes, whatcha think?’” Lance laughs. “There’d be a lot to unpack, yeah?”

“Dating a girl doesn’t mean you stop being bisexual.”

Lance groans. “You sound like my sister.”

Keith bites his lip. “I never got to tell my Pop.”

“And you regret it?”

Keith nods. “I hope he knew. I mean, I never said anything about girls or whatever. But I never got to say the words to him when he was around. I never got to look at him and say ‘Hey Dad, I’m gay’ and feel relief or rejection. I guess I can pretend he’d react how I’d want him to, like telling me he loves and accepts me. But what if he wouldn’t have? I’ll never know for sure.”

“Did you tell your Mom?”

Keith nods. “She said if falling in love with an alien was any indication, that he’d believe love is love no matter what.”

“Well yeah, then I think he would have to,” Lance chuckles.

“You wanna know the fucked up thing? I would have still wanted to tell him even if I knew he would reject or disown me. He died not knowing a really important part of me… even though he kept important parts of my own history from me.”

Keith looks at Lance. He nods him on to keep speaking, looking deep into his eyes.

“I resented him for not telling me about my mom, that he knew I was part Galra. I hated him for leaving me before he should have,” Keith presses his mouth together. “I hate myself for not saying it the moment I knew.”

Lance looks down at his tablet in his lap. “When was that?”

“When I was eight and I wanted to watch The Birdcage because I loved Robin Williams movies and someone in my class told me I couldn’t because it was about two men that were married and I was like 'Men can do that?!’ And then I asked my teacher and he sent me home with a note for my Pop.”

Lance laughs. “Seriously?!”

“Yeah, he took one look at the note, grabbed a bottle of bourbon, took a drink, and proceeded to explain to me what 'gay’ and 'lesbian’ meant. He took another shot of bourbon right after and told me that I could see the movie—when I was older. Not because of the gay stuff, but because it had too much swearing and I wouldn’t understand all of the jokes.”

“Did you see it?”

“Yeah, I actually woke up at three in the morning and watched it on cable while he was asleep. They censored the swears, so I figured it was okay?”

“What did you think?”

“I think I wanted to marry the son, he was cute,” Keith smiles. “I was pretty stoked that men could get married to other men. I mean, I didn’t know it still was illegal so I just kind of kept that in the back of my pocket.”

“So… I wanted to be Clark Gable in It Happened One Night,” Lance smiles. “I wanted to be that kind of suave, worldly, fast-talking and sharp-witted guy. And then I wanted to be Han Solo. And then Captain Kirk.”

“But then, one day you realized you wanted them to be as suave and charming with you too?”

“I still think about the walls of Jericho coming down in that movie. And sometimes there’s a girl on the other side, sometimes there’s a guy.” Lance licks his lips. “That’s the only way I can think to explain it.”

“You flirt with girls a lot.”

“I never learned how to flirt with guys,” Lance shrugs.

“If it doesn’t work out with Allura, I’ll teach you–” Keith’s eyes go wide. “I… totally just said that out loud. Oh fuck. I am so sorry, I didn’t mean it.”

Lance stands up. “That’s too bad. Would’ve been a really smooth, suave line if it was intentional.”

“I guess,” Keith watches as Lance stretches out long limbs. “You can have it for if you ever need to flirt with a guy, I mean, I guess it’s just like flirting with a girl only––ugh. Flirting is not my thing. At all. Ever. Are you going somewhere?”

“Yeah, gonna go call my parents. I can’t really keep putting it off, especially if I break through the walls of Jericho, and there’s my dream guy on the other side.”

Keith smiles. “I’m happy for you, Lance.”

“Then maybe we can watch The Birdcage and It Happened One Night as a way to keep me from hyperventilating in case it doesn’t work out?”

“That would be fun, but I’m hoping it works out the way you want.”

Lance nods and turns to leave, but spins on his heels. “For the record, it didn’t work out with Allura. We’re just friends.”

“Oh?”

“Which you knew, because Veronica and I were arguing about that too.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t mean to hear that either. Also the stuff about a long-haired friend that you wanted to ask out next.”

“I might have almost had a teeny-tiny, itty-bitty, full on panic-attack type meltdown when she asked if she could ask them out. So she called me out on harboring a not-so-secret crush on them. I fessed up to Allura that night about it. She said it was okay, and she always thought we’d be better together than her and I.”

“Wow, that’s really mature of you both.” Keith says. “So, Veronica pretended she wanted to hook up with Romelle? I mean, I’m guessing she’s the long-haired friend in question.”

Lance laughs. “Actually, mullet, I already asked out the long-haired friend on a movie date.”

Keith blinks.

“I’m not sure if he sad yes though, he’s being really vague. Guess I have to work on my guy-flirting some more.”
