people who say that we should not create or interact with problematic media lack basic understanding of how we as a society learn and analyze media. i dont mean that in a 'fiction doesnt affect reality' way, but in a 'fiction comes from reality, is shaped through us as a collective, and is a reflection of some of the deepest, truest parts of people'. if we ignore, if we condemn, if we ban media that has uncomfortable topics, we will never learn. we learn by looking at it and seeing why it is wrong. we hate by understanding it, not by just learning 'oh this thing is wrong so i have to hate it'. maybe for children who aren't ready to learn all of the deeper parts, or lack the comprehension skills to look at media critically. hate films made by bigots are awful, but banning them isn't going to fix the problem. if you don't want to watch them, you don't have to! but it's important for us to see why they were wrong. and see how that hatred spreads into our lives without us realizing it. same reason we study the holocaust (the nazis, btw, burned media that didn't agree with them. i'm not saying that people who say we should ban/hide information on topics that displease them are authoritarian right extremists but i am saying its a worrying connection). and commentaries that are about vile things happening by/to the protagonist (most of the time) are not encouraging the vile acts! if written well and written by the right people, commentaries are an insight to how these people actually think/feel, even if through prolonged allegories. we should not be crucifying some of the greatest social commentaries just because they're uncomfortable, because that is how we lose. if we do not understand, we cannot overcome! this is NOT me saying that people should just write about pedophilia, or incest, or anything of the sort just for fun. i do think that's gross at it's core, but that does not mean the writing/filming/ect is not important for us to look at as a society and go Hm. it appears that that particular order has lasting effects.

buck is nine days into a suit he filed against the lafd and the city of los angeles and he's trying to jump from his balcony, but every time he so much as touches the ledge, his chest tightens as if disobeying a direct order. a feeling so familiar to him that it's become like a sixth sense; a second skin. eddie's words echo through his head. not the demand to live, no. the other thing.

'you're exhausting.'

in all his rage, not once did he slip up. not once did eddie angrily make buck do something like so many others have before him.

it makes the pain of losing him hurt more. because that's what happened. he lost eddie. in his selfish actions, out of fear of losing everyone, he lost the most important person. people, really, because losing eddie means losing christopher.

'you're exhausting.'

eddie can't lie. and if there's one truth buck's infinitely more familiar with than eddie, it's that he's exhausting. he knows, okay? he gets it.

but why does he have to make himself smaller in order to fit? why can't everyone else just make a little bit more room for once? maybe that's why they think him selfish. it's always about buck.

so, he's sitting on his balcony. not jumping. because apparently, an order from months ago is preventing him from dying, and he's pissed off about it. he can't even die for himself. someone commanded him not to.

and they call him selfish.

he doesn't jump. can't jump. can't swallow more that two pain killers for his leg when it's time. can't pick up any sharp utensils without shaking. he decides to drop the lawsuit; it's the only thing it seems he can take control of right now. has to beg maddie to accompany him because the lawyer will certainly say something that will keep buck from pulling out.

'you're not dropping this.'

'i'm not...dropping this...?' buck looks to his sister, panicked. she takes a deep breath for him to follow. nods slightly. buck mimics her actions, clears his throat and stands.

'i am dropping the lawsuit. i never wanted the city's money. i want nothing to do with any of this anymore. all i wanted was my job and now i've lost everything.' he walks away before the lawyer can speak again. maddie hurriedly follows him out.

'buck, hey. i don't think you've lost everything. i'm sorry i took chim's side. there shouldn't be sides, but you're my brother, and i should have -'

'it's okay. i was just being selfish.'

'no, you weren't. if bobby really did keep you from going back and then lied about it, you had every right to be angry. i think suing the city was a little far, but,' she laughs. buck finds himself chuckling along with her.

'oh, one hundred percent too far!'

they're climbing into buck's jeep when he asks it.

'do you think they'll ever forgive me?'

'i do. it's what family - real family - does, evan. we forgive each other. you've found a real family with them. we both have, in a way. they'll move on because they love you. the real question is, are you going to be able to forgive yourself?'

You’re on the verge of tears and feeling rather stupid for it.

It’s the third time today alone that your call has gone straight to voicemail, and with the dozens of unread texts you’ve sent in the last week added to the mix, it’s starting to paint a picture you’re not very happy with. Lando is ignoring you. Or he’s blocked you. Or he’s blocked you because he’s ignoring you━

You bite down on your lip, hard, to keep back the sob crawling its way up your throat.

You’re not a PR officer, you hadn’t been lying when you told Garrett that, but you’ve spent enough time around the McLaren PR teams that you’ve picked up enough tips and tricks to know, at the very least, that the best thing you can do is just ignore the comments.

That’s what they tell all the athletes.

What they don’t tell the athletes is that ignoring the comments is much easier said than done, especially when your career requires you to have such a significant online presence. And the thing is, despite all of these strangers hounding you with every name under the sun and criticizing your capabilities, qualifications, and very existence, the thing that hurts the most is the radio silence from the only person you know could make it all better.

Now, more than ever, you need your best friend. But he isn’t here.

You tuck your phone into your jacket pocket and unlock the stall with great reluctance. You know better than to be hiding away, shirking your responsibilities while crying over a few missed phone calls. You have a job to do, and a real professional wouldn’t let something as simple as a handful of tasteless comments get in the way of that.

You should be used to them. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before.

Your first month at McLaren wasn’t entirely different.

When you were first hired on, Carlos had been in Formula One for a handful of years already and had built up a devotedly loyal fanbase with a decently large percentage of possessive fangirls who had come for your head the moment your existence had been announced.

The McLaren Instagram account had posted a picture of you standing between their two grinning drivers, your camera strung around your neck, with a very nice caption welcoming you to the team, and despite no indication that you were by any means involved with either of them in a way that went beyond professional, the comments had been taken over by feral teenage girls who saw the act of you simply standing near Carlos to be a direct threat against their “chances.”

Though it had been frustrating being met with childish threats and petty insults in your comments, you hadn’t really held it against any of them. You remember being a teenage girl and crushing on a celebrity. Deep down you knew you never had a chance with them, but that hadn’t stopped you from hanging posters in your bedroom and doodling their name beneath yours inside of scribbled hearts in your diary.

Regardless, it had taken close to a month for the negativity to die down, and you hadn’t had Lando then, either, so now shouldn’t be much different.

In fact, everyone on the Manchester City team━ trainers, physios, media coordinatiors, and anyone inbetween━ has been very polite about everything between you and Garrett. A lot of them have just avoided saying anything about it, which you’re very grateful for because you don’t think you’d be able to hold back your grimace while thanking them for their well wishes, and the few who have mentioned it typically only say something vague like a wishing you the best of luck or hoping you’re happy.

An intern gave you a sympathetic smile the other day, and you’d nearly burst into tears in the middle of the office of the Director of Communications, so you know you aren’t truly alone in this.

You just feel alone.

Exiting the bathroom is a simple affair. There’s no one standing post outside ready to give you any shit for being hidden away, and nobody comes sprinting around the corner as you make your way down the hall to the press conference room that’s been temporarily turned into your base of operations.

You think you’ll probably be able to go the rest of the afternoon without running into anyone, when you open your door and find━ sitting in the front row of the seats typically saved for journalists and the press, scrolling across his phone with a disinterested look painted across his face━ Jack Grealish.

“Jack,” you greet, a bit shocked. You close the door to the room gently behind you, and cross the distance to your desk. “Did we have a meeting scheduled? It must’ve completely slipped my mind, I sincerely apologize.”

He offers you a polite smile. “No, we didn’t, so no need to be sorry. I actually just wanted to check in. See how things are going with everything.”

You blink at him in surprise. Apart from Garrett, you haven’t really had much time to speak with the other players. They wish you good morning and good afternoon when they see you, and if a ball goes astray they always call out for you to watch your head, but between their morning training and their afternoon training, their strategy reviews at lunch, and the frequent in between meetings with physios, nutritionists, and trainers, they don’t get much time to chit chat with a simple photographer.

You clear your throat, “Erm, it’s going well. I’ve gotten some really good shots these past few days. There’s one with Rodrigo that I’m particularly proud of. It should do well with the fans.”

“And things with Ward?”

You purse your lips.

“Figured.” Jack sighs. “Look, nearly everyone you run into here knows or has at least some inkling into what he’s like. He’s a prick. None of the lads on the team like him, it’s why the managers are trying to get him out of here.”

You lower yourself down into your chair. “He told me they were planning to trade him off because of his reputation.”

Jack scoffs, “Yeah, ‘cause that’s the ‘official’ reason. They can’t cut his contract early for legal reasons, so they’re waiting for it to expire and coming up with an excuse for why they ain’t re-signing him. It’s really just ‘cause the rest of us can’t keep dealing with his massive ego and the fact that he’s a misogynistic fuck who doesn’t know the first thing about respect.”

“Fucking tell me about it,” you mutter with a sigh.

If he expected you to defend Garrett and is surprised by the fact that you haven’t, Jack doesn’t show it. He looks relaxed sitting across from you, like you’re having a casual conversation and not actively shit talking a member of his team. It gives you the impression that he knows significantly more about Garrett than you do, and that because of what he knows he probably figured out that one party in the relationship is not the most willing of participants.

“How’d you get all wrapped up it in then? Didn’t figure you to be the type to go after pricks like Ward.”

You debate over whether you should tell him or not. There isn’t much Jack can do about the situation regardless, but it would at least get things off your chest and if someone else knew then maybe you wouldn’t feel so alone anymore.

There’s only so many days you can spend hiding out in the women’s restroom trying not to bawl your eyes out, and you’ve already reached your limit.

You heave a sigh, “It’s kind of fucked up really.” A pen on your desk catches your attention and you start to fiddle with it, avoiding Jack’s eyes which have focused directly onto you. “He asked if I would help him fix up his reputation by pretending to be his girlfriend so he could show everyone that he’s matured and can hold down a steady relationship. When I told him no, he threatened to make up a lie about inappropriate conduct to get me fired and blacklisted from the industry, so for the sake of preserving my career I agreed.”

“Bloody fucking hell,” Jack murmurs, shaking his head. “I’m real sorry he did that, Y/N.”

You shrug. “It’s happened, so, there’s nothing I can really do except wait it out at this point.”

When you look up and meet his gaze, Jack looks murderous. His hands are clenched into fists on the armrests, knuckles white with the strength of his grip. His brows are furrowed, and his lips are twisted downward in a scowl.

“If you need anything,” he starts, “let me know. And I mean it. We all know how Ward can be. He’s a knobhead. So if you need anything━” his emphasis on the word and what that implies makes you feel more comforted than anything has since the whole fiasco started, “━then you let me know, or you tell one of the other boys and they’ll find me, alright?”

All you can do is nod.

Fic data from 2023

Happy new year! This was a big year for me because I got back into reading fanfiction, and boy howdy did I read a lot of it. Over the year I tracked what fics I read got that sweet, sweet data about how much of what I read and when. So now it's time for it to all come together! I put the major stats above the read more line, and below are some other little details about the tags and types of fics. Without further ado, let's get into it!

My goal this year was to read 1000 fics which I realized around June was NOT going to happen. I actually read about 651 fics including re-reads. Not too shabby!

The total words of all the fics I started was 5,196,016 and multiplying by the percent finished (could be >100 for re-reads, or <100 for dnf) I read about 6,214,399 words. So, HOLY BALLS 6.2 MILLION WORDS???? JFC. THATS LIKE 16K EVERY SINGLE DAY. ok i will never again tell myself i didn't read enough this year. Can you imagine if I had hit 1000 fics?

Something else fun about the word count is that the average length was about 1584 words/fic.

My top months by number of fics were February (108 fics), April (88 fics), and March (66 fics). In terms of word count, my top months were February (1.4 million words), January (1.16 million words) and August (804k words).

Before we get into tags, here's the graphs for the stuff I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that the first two are about fics I started, not necessarily finished, so the count may vary a bit.

The top three longest fics I read were meet me where the light greets the dark at 115514 words, Subito Sempre at 107053 words, and This Game We Play at 101717 words. Those also happen to be some of my favorite fics of all time.

Here's a graph about the length of the fic I read. "Format of a oneshot" is something that may be multiple chapters but was short enough that it could've been one. Idk this database was built on vibes.

I know 54% of the authors! Speaking of, there were 208 distinct authors I read from this year. My top author was JynxedOracle at 33 fics!

VegasPete almost had it for a while but KimChay will always be my ride or die. Also, if you can't tell, I basically read almost exclusively KinnPorsche The Series fics. For my top fandom outside of KPTS, that would be MCU, and my top non-KP relationship was SpideyPool. My highest rarepair within KPTS will go to my grave or the groupchat. :*)

the waves by virginia woolf finally a book that isnt gay JUST KIDDING it is in fact also a lil gay but mostly it's just fucking beautiful. possibly the most beautiful novel i've ever read idk, hard to say and its not a quick read but like. read it for the first time in high school and have returned to it a number of times since then and. her prose my GOD. its a novel but also a poem, just a very long love poem to .... everything ....

fun home by alison bechdel technically it's a gRapHiC nOvEL and i only read it for the first time about a year ago but. have reread it since and it continues to haunt me istg this memoir is STUNNING the most gorgeous graphic novel & most gorgeous memoir i have ever ever encountered. an actually brilliant piece of literature in every right. makes me sob. (also, yes, it is very gay.)

the heart is a lonely hunter by carson mccullers well i HAD to include carson mccullers on the list dear god!! also so formative...read this book for the first time in high school, have returned to it a number of times since. it is. truly beautiful !!!!!! what else can i say <3.

who's afraid of virginia woolf by edward albee this is in fact a PLAY (!!) also an amazing movie but. i have read the play many many times it is SO funny, SO smart, SO painful. who needs whips when you and yr partner are. mentally torturing each other for sport. another one i read for the first time as a teen so again.... rather formative.

lolita by vladimir nabokov all right well honestly i read this for the first time in high school and enjoyed it, especially part one, thought it was smart n funny n that part two was kinda all over the place but still yknow overall felt positively about it. BUT. gave it a reread last year and jesus CHRIST i was just like !! i missed SO much !! it is not only so goddamn beautiful but SO much more complex and brilliant than i ever picked up on as a teenager my god. the prose is like the most intricate beautiful renaissance painting and the plot is like the most infuriatingly complicated game of CHESS but. it's ?? the product of a genuinely brilliant mind ?? idek but i will probably read this book at least five more times before i die its just. wow.

Yes!! I love responding to comments! I want to discuss things with people reading my fics and (especially in the case of Ashes), I wanna see what my readers theories are on what’s going to happen. It’s one of my favorite parts of having people who read what I write!!

Uhhhh so if I had finished it, it WOULD have been the untitled Bungo Stray Dogs Heathers AU fic I got like 75% of the way done writing and then abandoned.

The planned Elowyn piece I have is something my girlfriend and I came up with together. So I have co-authored concepts

The first two or three chapter of Ashes, besides the prologue, there was a LOT taken from the discord RP that I’d originally come up with the plot of Ashes for. I had permission from that friend to use them. And I heavily, HEAVILY took out and then rewrote their portions (namely the Raine parts of the chapters “Moving Day” and “Hexside” bc the rest at the time were my characters). Their original writing has been scrubbed and a lot of Raine’s character and story arc has transformed into something else entirely. Pretty much all that remains is that they were the one who came up with the idea that Raine was Manny’s sibling. If they read it, they could probably still see the bones of what they wrote if they squint. But by the time Luz hits Eda with the door in “Hexside,” they’d already moved on from the rp. So it was very easy to rewrite around their parts and just reuse the posts I that I had written for those chapters.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Oh jeez.

Either the untitled Bungo Stray Dogs Heathers AU that was never posted anywhere, or The First Golden Guard.

Pretty much The First Golden Guard i have just notes scribbled out of the plot, what I think the first chapter is, and some various bits of dialogue from different moments in the fic. But then I started writing Ashes and that took over my life, and now I really want to write The Caleb Files, and the bonus stuff that got cut from Ashes. Plus the Elowyn fic. so I just don’t know if it will ever get written now

16. What are your writing strengths?

Description and voice.

I really love getting a little flowery when describing action or setting while writing. And in the case of setting in particular, I think I have a more natural ability.

I also really strive to make sure each character’s own unique way of talking comes through in their dialogue. Maybe not always when the narration makes the reader privy to their thoughts and emotions, but at the very least, their dialogue does.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Bro just cannot stop yapping!!

I actually genuinely do believe my greatest weakness is my inability to shut up sometimes. I’m sure if I go back and reread Ashes from the beginning, I’ve said the same shit multiple times.

Also sometimes I just get repetitive!! And I use certain colloquialisms like “just,” “after all,” and “as if” FAR too often.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

sigh.

I am a latinx person who lived through the VLD fandom… I have a LOT of opinions… and I have seen some bad Spanish dialogue written by non-Spanish speakers… the kind of shit that stands out to even me, when I have little verbal fluency.

Here’s the thing: I am not AGAINST anyone writing another language of dialogue into their fics. I actually do think it’s a good thing.

HOWEVER!!!

If you are a person who only speaks one language—if you’re a person who kind of doesn’t know what I’m talking about when I say ‘code switching’ or only understands the basic definition of code switching—I am BEGGING you to try and have someone with more experience in that language than you to proofread those dialogue sections.

The amount of times I’ve seen weird moments where the code switching didn’t make logical or emotional sense for the character beyond the author’s “I want to include Spanish here” is innumerable. And that’s not to say code switching needs to have a deep, profound reason all the time—sometimes code switching happens bc there’s no word or phrase in one language that directly translates from the concept or emotion you know how to describe in another! But from what I’ve found, there are a lot of people who understand code switching in concept (and that it’s important for representation) but not in practice bc they simply have no firsthand experience with it. I don’t blame them, though! It’s a hard thing to understand on description alone! Unless you’ve experienced it before, I don’t think it’s something you can fully comprehend. And it can stand out. You can even think you’ve done it right on technicality, but it falls flat.

A tiktok in how to spot AI images I once saw said “AI understands that a mirror, or stairs, or chair legs have to be there there, but it doesn’t understand why it functionally exists or what purpose it serves” and therefore it makes mistakes by adding twelve stairs on the right and fourteen on the left, or five legs on two chairs that are somehow sharing them, or mirrors won’t show the correct items reflected back. I’ve seen many well-meaning fic writers (and published authors!!!) do the exact same thing with language switching. They understand that it should be there, but not functionally why.

Also a basic “don’t rely on google translate” here….. but also a less basic one: different cultures of a shared language are gonna have different turns of phrase and different slang. I’ve also seen a lot of fics that have Lance (a Cuban character) using Mexican slang or words. That’s always awkward.

There’s just a lot. I could go on about this forever but I think I pretty much covered it all.

Ever?! Lmfao Harry Potter when I was a young teen. I didn’t understand what I was doing at all and only did it because my older friend who knew I liked writing my original stories at the time said that I should try writing fic.

I didn’t even have a plot or anything. I just genuinely thiugh fanfic was writing your little self insert OCs and perpetually playing with them in a dollhouse made of your favorite thing 🤡🤡🤡

Wholly and completely, without a shadow of a doubt

It’s genuinely the first fic I’ve ever written where I have actually wondered if I was better off writing it as an original story and going the publishing route. Unfortunately for future me and fortunately for you all, I’m way too attached to the characters as their original names and incarnations to do that 🤣

It’s also the first fic I’ve ever written where I went into it already knowing every piece of the puzzle and having all the clues laid out to perfectly set them up ahead of time. I’m very proud of that and I long for the day where someone rereads Ashes after it’s over and discovers the tiny things in the extremely early chapters that were hints towards the end.
