ROUND 2C, MATCH 5 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Saki:
Psychic goth girl who was cast as Cinderella in a school play. The play was so poorly cast overall that the entire script had to be rewritten, thus “Cinderella-ish” was born. Hanajima played a Cinderella dressed in all black, and when confronted by the fairy godmother, she simply wished for meat.
idk if this is what you meant by 'acting' as Cinderella but in-universe she got cast as Cinderella in the school play, and the characters ended up re-writing the entire play to work around her because she was too Goth and disinterested to play a classic Cinderella character.
She plays the best version of Cinderella. All she cared about was going to the ball for the barbecue. The episode she's in is a really good one as well.
Overall Saki is not a Cinderella character, but you did say we could submit them if they were Cinderella in an in-universe play, and that she was! In Season 2 Episode 23 "It's Cinderella-ish", her class puts on a production of Cinderella and she ends up getting cast as the titular role, which a lot of other characters think is crazy because she's this straight-faced, emotionally-repressed, exclusively-wears-black kinda girl. Also her best friend Tohru (the anime's protagonist) gets cast as an evil stepsister, and she's one of the sweetest people ever and has so much trouble being mean to Saki even fakely and vice versa. Of course, Saki has no problems being rude to the Prince Charming character in the play, played by Kyo, a guy who's sweet deep down (but only to Tohru and his adoptive father) but is other wise a hot head who's always getting into fights. So between Saki as Cinderella having a genuine love for her stepsister and a general animosity with the prince, in addition to the fact that when she goes to the ball, all she wants to do is eat, not mingle, she makes for a very interesting Cinderella.
so this shoujo series has a storyline where the class puts on a Cinderella play but instead of the heroine playing Cinderella, shenanigans happen that lead to the heroine's goth best friend, Saki Hanajima, aka Hana-chan, aka Demon Queen, playing the lead role. Hana-chan's Cinderella dresses in all black against the wishes of the play's director, does not give 2 shits about the prince, and is just a general menace to society. I know she's probably not gonna win but I just wanted to share her with all of you bc I love her and the Cinderella-ish arc is to this day some of the funniest shit I've seen in a manga
their high school class decided to randomize who played which characters in their production of Cinderella & the creepy goth girl got cast as Cinderella & her painfully kind-hearted bestie got cast as the evil stepsister (among other mismatched roles) so they rewrote the play into "Sorta Cinderella" & Cinderella became a deadpan, lazy girl who only wants the best for her darling step-sister & who only went to the ball for the food.  in the end, instead of marrying the prince she takes his money & opens a restaurant with her sister & I love that for them <3
Mettaton:
The dress the voice the malicious intent to kill you what else could you want
i think it's awesome that this cinderella's fairy godmother is a mad scientist who made him into a sexy robot

Another review cause I don't really feel like drawing currently ^^'
The moment I write this I'm literally on the verge of tears. Why? Because I decided to play T2A2G (guys the name is too long I'm not type all that TT) and these two guys are killing me from being so cute.
It's the first time a play in...months? A year??? IT'S BEEN MORE THAN A YEAR SINCE I FIRST PLAYED THAT!! this is a shock for me, I feel really nostalgic about it as it is the first OW related vn I've ever. Although I took some time before really getting into it, I remember I was already crazy about the characters and Iggy and Genzou's dynamic!!! I like how Genzou's always here for Iggy regardless of the context. We all need a Genzou in our life. Genzou supremacy. Imma rise an army to defend this cause.
Ooh and I'm not sure about what I'm saying but T2A2G is one of the first OW side games, if not the very first right? The texting-like mechanics made me think a lot of Cinderella (really like that type of vn btw), I like how the conversations kind of leveled up when it comes to texting. Not sure about what I'm saying but Our Cinderella is way more lively (perhaps thanks to Genzou's delightful humour and that there's no choice to make involving Iggy feeling uncomfortable/more anxious than he already is like in T2A2G). Anyway, still really like T2A2G and the classic of the home screen that changes when we get the true ending (THAT ONE GETS ME EVERYTIME, MY HEART GET ALL TINGLY AND I CRY FROM OVERWHELMING CUTENESS HOW)
WAIT ALSO THE CG WAS ILLEGALY ADORABLE IGGY IS SO SO CUTE!! THAT LITTLE BEING HE SO AAAAAAARGH.. (in case you wonder I'm perfectly sane).
Replaying that game AFTER getting to know them is another experience, I was squealing and screaming through the whole thing😭 so much nostalgia.. I recall the times where I played it on that old computer that died (it was a real antiquity. Have a new one, it still sucks but we do with it ^^')
Anyway, it was just to say that Genzy's definitly my will to live. I'd kill for them. Commit slaughter. I love them. Yes.

Hello....Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
I've been asked my top 10 before, but never from all of the media I love and I've never been asked to elaborate on why I love them. Not to mention that the list changes as I watch/read new stuff, so it's good to update it. Then again, I don't watch live action that much, so I'm afraid it's gonna be all animanga/books, if you don't mind.
I must say, though, that it was impossible to decide on 10 this time around. So I resorted to listing my top 5. The list is in no particular order, by the way.
1. Kuchiki Rukia
Tumblr media
So this one was an instant fave and I don't even think I need to explain much. Badass, kindhearted, A+ sense of humor. Just checks all the boxes. Also love her unique character design.
2. Gilbert Bougainvillea
Tumblr media
I strictly mean the book version of him. Gil was one of the very few fictional characters to ever surprise me. I love how unapologetically emotional he is and how he's always making sure the people he holds dear get to live a happy life. The way he's such a "family and friends first" kinda guy and yet nobody seems to realize it simply because he looks like the aloof type is bitterly relatable for me. Also the way he acknowledges how unfair life is for him despite being brough up in an environment that, in theory, had everything to meet all his needs, and yet tries to make the best of it all. And my God, the amount of Respect Women Juice that this guy drinks. Goals as a human being, tbh. (Yes, the books are that different from the anime.)
3. Oikawa Tsurara
Tumblr media
I normally don't vibe all that much with characters like Tsurara, but she quite literally opened new horizons for me in fandom. Imagine the dumb, clingy servant girl stereotype turned upside down. You start out fearing that she'll fit into the Mold TM, and before you realize it, she's risen to become an upper officer in command of two clans and is endgame with the protagonist (with three more guys pinning after her). Except this isn't a Cinderella kind of journey; she was always treated by her love interest as an equal and was always portrayed as having immense potential. Her jealousy of her rivals seems comical but is actually valid, as her suspicions always hit home. She's smart and strong and not at all delusional, and the story makes sure to give her a steady growth. She never becomes overpowered, but the protagonist only gets to that level because of her.
4. Takigawa Masaki
Tumblr media
Again, book version. Motherfucker just be casually defying every god in existence because y'all can't just try to kill my disciple like that, what the actual fuck. The "Catch These Hands" priest, because he'll punch the shit outta whoever gets between him and the little bitch who tried to harm his students. And then he'll fuck into his shrine in the middle of the woods like nothing happened. His main occupation, however, is to be hot as hell. Truly an icon.
5. Sheryl Nome
Tumblr media
Same as with Tsurara, I normally don't vibe much with characters like Sheryl, but holy fuck, the amount of respect I have for this woman. Macross is a franchise that specializes in taking archetypes and tropes and subverting them completely, and Frontier is my favorite because the character handling in this thing is good fucking food.
Sheryl has such an attitude but she can back it up. And she does it in ways that are charismatic, rather than annoying or bitchy. She absolutely never puts herself down and is never portrayed as actually fragile and inoffensive on the inside. The narrative gets points too for never going "she's amazing but she won't ever be as good as the protagonist". And she's cute, sure, but she's also dangerous and is out there to get what she wants. Yet there's so much heart to her. So much passion and admiration for all things alive and for connecting with them through music. She usually only does what she wants but is so ridiculously selfish with the people she cherishes. Easily one of the most extremely complex and absurdly cool femme fatales in animanga.

Lee Je Hoon's Chief Detective 1958 starts today. Can't wait to watch! I enjoyed him in Taxi Driver and really want to watch through his filmography eventually.
Lovely Runner is knocking my socks off! Byeon Wook Seok and Kim Hye Yoon are killing both the comedy and the drama. Wook Seok is the cutest loser in love! The mystery and unexpected twists are fun and interesting. I hope this quality storytelling continues. I'm on the edge of my seat.
I only have 3 episodes left of Love Me Love My Voice which has been wonderful and heartwarming. I love the main romance but the friendships and secondary romances have been given ample time to shine as well. I'm always here a good found family. I really like how the dramatic readings and song perfomances have been carefully woven into the story to further the character development. Definitely recommend.
Now we come to our debrief on The Smile Has Left Your Eyes. Whoa, what a rollercoaster. The first half was interesting with many characters' selfish and dark intentions mixed with a little mystery were set up in contrast to our optimistic, self-sacrificing female lead. However, the second half drowned in major events happening and then being dismissed as if they never happened, multiple secret keepers refusing to tell the secret multiple times an episodes even when asked point blank when the answers could stop so many bad things from happening, and the existential dread I felt about what the big reveal was going to be only for it to completely dismissed. (FYI I found out what I thought was going to be the big reveal IS the actual reveal in the darker Japanese version it's based on.) After episode 14, I wasn't sure I could continue watching the show. But after a night of uneasy sleep, I decided to finish it the next morning on double speed to get through it. I did watch the last 10 minutes at regular speed. While there were some well done things about their relationship in the second half, it couldn't save the show for me even though I went in knowing this was not an HEA. Overall, I was just left feeling angry and exhausted. As a Seo In Guk fan, this was a show I had long wanted to see, just to find out what my opinion on it would be. I'm sad that the SIG fanmeet has been post-poned, hopefully I will be able to make the next date. But this means I feel okay to stop my SIG show binging so I will not be watching Hello Monster anytime soon. I'm actually impressed with how much of SIG's filmography I've already seen (7 shows as a ML, 4 shows as a cameo, and 1 movie). I'm pretty sure it's more than I've seen any other kdrama actor or actress.
After a bad experience at the new dentist yesterday, where the hygienist manhandled my teeth and they tried to upsell me on services, I was in need of a comfort rewatch. I've been thinking alot about Lee Jun Young lately and decided to break out the first thing I ever saw him in, Imitation. I was only going to watch a few favorite parts from an episode or two and ended up binging my favorite parts of most of the series. lol I really hope his upcoming Cinderella romcom with Pyo Ye Jin is going to be good.
I slowly picked Vigilante back up again this week and was excited to see Lee Joon Hyuk's character finally emerge to add a boost of energy and chaos to the story.
Now that I've got some time and the second half of the series has finally dropped, I will continue watching Chae Jong Hyeop's Eye Love You.

The Guardian, December 11, 1991.
“With her long pale form, blonde tangle and scarlet pout, Courtney Love is the ideal candidate for male journalists seeking another broken siren for their catalogue. Men, it seems, have trouble with her.
Love sings, screeches and plays a vicious guitar with Hole, the latest, hippest rock 'n' roll thing to come out of Los Angeles. Their name comes from Euripides' Medea ("Come flame of the sky/Pierce through my head!") and warnings to Love from her mother "not to carry a hole around inside me just because I suffered a problematic childhood."
Currently on tour, Hole's debut album, Pretty On The Inside, topped the independent charts earlier this year and sent the music press into lip-smacking frenzies over such lines as, "Is she rotten on the inside, ugly from the back."
But while Love may rattle with conflict, she's just a normal woman, telling it like it is.
"It's not on purpose," says Love of her graphic use of physical imagery. "But writing songs has a lot to do with your sexuality. I danced for a while and just being around that made me aware of what people use. And if you grow up blessed with a certain beauty or a certain intelligence that enhances your beauty, you can get into a better position in life."
Years of being fat brought this home to Love. "When you're fat, no one looks you in the eye, they think you're bitter and ranting. Personally it makes me hate those people."
Despite her abhorrence of such physical prejudices, Love realised the advantages of a svelte outline once she'd decided to make music. After a rootless childhood spent travelling across America and New Zealand with hippy parents, a role in Alex Cox's Straight To Hell and a short spell singing with San Francisco rock band Faith No More, Love deliberately settled in the creative void of LA and began searching for women who shared her taste for a more subversive expression. She eventually went for Caroline Rue on drums, Jill Emery on bass and, surprisingly, Eric Erlandson on guitar.
"The pool of women to play with is small. I've kicked girls out of this band for playing too much like guys. Even Eric plays like a girl. Girls' playing is compassion and rage, and it can also be ugly and jarring. To deny my femininity and just rock out like a guy would not be part of evolution. At school, women are discouraged from learning maths but when it comes to writing good songs, you need maths. You can't just do it primally."
Her tattered beauty image is as much a part of Love's peculiar femininity as is her playing. Her smeared eyeliner and torn baby doll dresses have earned her the status of a wayward Cinderella. In truth, she simply likes pretty things, but her inner conflict between a desire for adornment and a feminist ideology tempts her to make a mockery of girlhood trappings. "I'm not embarrassed about being a feminist and I'm not opposed to pretty dresses. On the other hand, girls are supposed to like pretty things and I don't want to do what I'm supposed to."
Like all women, Courtney Love is confused. She doesn't pretend to have any answers, but she is not the lost, vulnerable creature many have intimated. This woman wants to kill rockstars, open for Guns 'n Roses and "have 50,000 people throw shit at me". She wants to wrench open the attitudes towards women in the predominantly white male game of rock 'n' roll. "The American male runs half the global world and grows up on rock music from day one. If you can alter the psyche of someone who's growing up to be a rapist or a total misogynist, you're creating values and instead of making the void bigger, you're making it smaller."
With Madonna's lawyers currently pursuing Hole's legal representatives in the hope of signing the band to the pop icon's new label, and virtually every major record company queuing up to breakfast, lunch and dine her, Courtney Love looks set for stardom.”

In Heidi Ann Heiner's Cinderella Tales from Around the World, I've now read the few Donkeyskin tales from Spain and Portugal, followed by the more numerous versions from the British Isles.
*The book features two Spanish variants: The Ass's Skin, which strongly resembles the French versions and has the heroine become a goose girl while disguised in a donkey's skin, and The Golden Chest, which is a "princess hides in a hollow object" variant, in this case a golden chest.
**In The Ass's Skin, the princess's finery is just described as "the loveliest and most costly dresses and jewels," while in The Golden Chest, she asks her father for a gown of multicolored feathers, a gown of fish scales, and a gown studded with stars made of diamonds and pearls.
*The one Portuguese variant, The Princess Who Would Not Marry Her Father, reads like a slightly unwieldy composite of various French, German, and Italian variants. The king chooses his daughter as his bride because only she can wear her late mother's ring. Advised by an old woman who's really a fairy, she demands gowns with the themes of stars, flowers, and many colors, then finally runs away disguised in a wooden dress, which secretly holds the gowns. Calling herself "Maria Wood," she finds work tending another king's ducks; every day, when she's alone with the ducks in a field, she puts on one of her gowns. Three days in a row, the young king sees her from afar, but when asked who the "beautiful lady" was, "Maria Wood" pretends not to know. Meanwhile (whether accidentally or on purpose, it's not clear), she kills a duck each day, until the king decides she's not fit to be a duck herder and brings her into the castle as a maidservant instead. Soon afterward, three balls take place; each time Maria Wood asks to go, the king refuses and throws some object at her, and when she later attends the balls in her gowns, she claims to come from "the land of Boot," "the land of Towel," and "the land of Walking Stick." But then, after the balls, every night she secretly puts on the gowns in her bedroom. One night the king sees her through the keyhole, so he has a new key to the room made, and on a subsequent night he opens the door, catching the princess unawares in her finery. Thus the whole truth is revealed and the king and princess are married.
Next we move on to the English variants.
*Heiner includes Joseph Jacobs' Tattercoats in this section of the book, though I'm not sure why: it's not really a Donkeyskin tale, but more of an unconventional Cinderella. The orphaned heroine lives with her grandfather, a rich lord, who shuns her because his daughter died giving birth to her: he sits day and night by his window, weeping for his daughter until his tears form a channel to the sea, and letting his hair grow so long that it binds him to his chair. She grows up neglected and bullied by the servants, who call her "Tattercoats." Her only friends are her old nurse, who feeds and clothes her, and a boy who tends the geese, who plays music on a pipe that always makes her happy. One day the king gives a ball to find a bride for his son. The grandfather refuses to let Tattercoats go, but the gooseherd comforts her and suggests they at least go into town to see the lords and ladies on the way to the ball. Along with the flock of geese, they set out, dancing all the while as the gooseherd plays music on his pipe. As it happens, the prince comes riding along, and he falls in love with Tattercoats at first sight. (This is a very rare Cinderella tale where the prince falls for the heroine in her rags, though it's implied that the gooseherd's magic pipe causes it.) He brings her to the ball and proclaims her as his bride-to-be, and at that moment, the gooseherd's magical music transforms her rags into a beautiful gown and the geese into attendants for her. Thus she marries the prince, although the ending has two bittersweet notes: the gooseherd disappears and is never seen again, and the grandfather refuses to reconcile with his granddaughter, but still sits and grieves.
**I remembered this tale when I saw the concept art for Disney's Encanto that showed Abuela Alma sitting sadly by her window, with her long hair seeming to form a river. Since both stories have the theme of a troubled grandparent/granddaughter relationship that stems from the grandparent's grief (whether for a lost daughter or a lost husband), I wonder if at that early point in production, the Encanto creative team drew some inspiration from Tattercoats.
*Next, the book features three versions of Catskin. This English tale is a more straightforward variant of Donkeyskin, though without the attempted incest. It exists not only as a prose tale, but as a sung ballad: this book includes two versions of the ballad's rhyming lyrics and one prose version.
**In this tale, a rich lord wants a son, but his wife only gives birth to daughters (or, in the prose version, just one daughter), and when their youngest (or only) daughter is born, he's so disappointed and angry that he wants nothing to do with her. The girl is raised by a nurse in the country, and though her father sends her fine clothes and has her educated, he otherwise ignores her.
**When she grows up, in the two ballad versions, she just sets out to find work because her father doesn't want her and she has nowhere else to go. In the prose version, her father decides to marry her off to the first man who proposes, and he turns out to be a nasty old man, so she runs away. In all versions, though, she bundles up her elegant clothes, dresses herself in a catskin coat, and becomes a scullery maid at a young nobleman's castle.
***When three balls are held, Catskin asks to go each night, but either the bad-tempered cook or the young lord's snobbish mother refuses, and first throws water on her, then hits her with a ladle, then with a skimmer. At each ball, she claims to live at "the Sign of the Basin of Water," "the Sign of the Broken Ladle," and "the Sign of the Broken Skimmer." The fact that the young lord himself isn't the abuser obviously makes the romance more palatable for modern readers, though it means we lose the element of irony and satire from the variants where he is.
**On the third night, the young lord manages to follow the mystery lady into the forest unnoticed, where he sees her change from her gown into her catskin robe. The next say, he asks his mother for Catskin's hand in marriage, but she refuses, so he becomes gravely ill (or, in one ballad version, he feigns illness) and insists on having Catskin nurse him. She comes to his room in her beautiful gown, confirming her identity.
**Meanwhile, back in Catskin's birthplace, her mother and (in the ballads) her sisters have all died, leaving her father alone in the world. He deeply regrets having sent her away, but at last they reunite (either Catskin and her husband come to him or he learns of her marriage and comes to her), and Catskin forgives him.
*The one Irish variant included in this book, The Princess in the Catskins, is like a cross between the English Catskin and the European Donkeyskin tales. The princess's wicked stepfather seeks to marry her after her mother dies, but a fairy disguised as a horse advises her first to demand gowns of silver, gold, and diamonds and pearls, and then to hide them in walnut shells and run away in a catskin disguise. She becomes a scullery maid at another castle, attends three balls, wins the prince's love, and is identified in the end by a ring the prince slipped onto her finger.
**There's no abuse theme in this variant. Instead, the prince notices "Cat-skin's" resemblance to the lady at the ball and tries to question her, but each time she plays dumb. Then at the second and third balls, she pretends to be annoyed with the prince because she's heard that he's been speaking sweetly to a maidservant.
*There are also two Scottish variants, The King Who Wished to Marry His Daughter and Margery White Coats. In both, the princess is expected to marry her father because her late mother's clothes fit no one but her. In The King... her godmother advises her to ask for gowns of swan's down, cottongrass flowers, and gold and silver, for a silver shoe and a gold shoe, and for a chest that can float on the sea. Then she sails across the sea inside the chest, reaches another country, becomes a scullery maid in a wealthy house, and wears her gowns to church on Sundays, where a prince falls in love with her. In Margery White Coats, her uncle advises her to ask for gowns of birds' down, silver, and gold, and for glass shoes, and then helps her escape to another king's palace, where she becomes a scullery maid wearing only her white petticoat and shift, but attends three royal feasts. In both, Cinderella-style, she ultimately loses a shoe, and the prince tries it on every maiden until he finds her.
*Compared to the continental European Donkeyskins, I notice that none of the British versions have the heroine's love interest abuse her in her servant disguise. If the running abuse gag is included at all, the one who inflicts it is always a woman instead, either the love interest's mother or the cook. But several British versions have the heroine be abused and insulted by her fellow servants – whether just by the cook, as in Catskin, or by the whole staff, as in Tattercoats, or as in The Princess in the Catskins, where they can see her regal bearing and bully her for "putting on airs" and where the manservants sexually harass her. This theme is much less common in the versions from continental Europe.
Next on the list of Donkeyskin tales: the versions from Scandinavia.

EVEN FREAKING MORE Things about Cinderella's Castle I'm excited about already as a big Cinderella fan
Tumblr media
Part One, Part Two, Part Three (This)
I could not watch the whole 12-hour stream, so forgive me for forgetting or excluding anything.
I had no clue this show was leaked. I'm glad I didn't see it. This fandom’s seemingly on the smaller size, but we're pretty respectful to the creators from what I've seen and I think that's great. Funny that Jeff leaked it. 😆
YEAH LET’S GO FOURTEEN LIMBED FAIRY QUEEN!!! Maybe. Of course, no pressure. Praying Mantises scare me, to the point where I'm not going to look it up to see if I spelled that right, so it's a pretty perfect inspiration for a pretty-but-terrifying fairy queen. At least for me. I didn't know they came in purple, I'm too busy running away from them.
The “great grey days” I believe it was called. An event with the trolls where the sun was blocked out. Wonder what that has to do with anything coming forth in the Lands That Are stories. Kinda reminds me of the death of the dinosaurs.
"Starlight" has been mentioned in some of the lyrics released so far and I wonder what that is. I suspect a type of magic. Probably "good" or "light" magic, just based on the good associations I have with the word starlight, but maybe that will be subversive. Or maybe it'll be good, but misinterpreted as bad magic. Who knows. All we can do is wait.
I was thinking about the Fairy Queen and how she might be treated in the story. Ella's mother was killed for witchcraft, so I wonder if Fairy Queen will also be sought out for witchcraft, hence why she sings about Ella's mother in "Ash to Ash" like she knew her or of her struggle. Or maybe the town will see her differently than whoever they think are witches. The name "Fairy Queen of Sweet Dreams" doesn't sound like she's considered a witch, but things can be subverted in stories. I wonder exactly what in the town's minds makes up the difference between good and bad magic users if there is one to them.
I know it's probably just my knee-jerk reaction to think bad characters can have more to them, but I mildly feel bad about the trolls getting hunted. I know they're supposed to all be bad human killers, but I can't wrap my head around them all being bad and deserving of their entire species being wiped out at this point in time. I don't know… THINK ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS!
I wonder if characters from potential upcoming Lands That Are shows will meet ones from this show in the future and so on, like the Hatchetverse. Btw, what are we calling this world exactly? The Landsverse? The Castleverse? The latter seems like the best option to me as the Langs have been calling them “castle stories”.
I’m so curious about what other fairytales might be adapted for the Lands That Are. I feel like lesser-known fairytales, like Donkeyskin or Bluebeard for example, would be interesting, and the base versions of those stories in particular seem to fit the darker tones of Lands That Are. More well-known stories would be great too of course, and are a bit more likely to happen if I'm being realistic. But maybe they could combine lesser-known stories with more-known ones, either combining the plotlines to make one story or in a style like Into The Woods; for example: Beauty and the Beast + Bluebeard. Lowkey wanna write that myself if they don't.
I'm so glad Starkid decided to do a series of fairytales! I feel like the world is starved of genuine fairytale stories these days.
I'm excited to learn more about Ella’s two un-named friends. Nick and Matt seemed to love writing them, so I can't wait to see what they're about. I also can’t wait to see Crumb and Sir Hop’s relationship, it sounds really cute.
Ella’s oak tree reminds me of Into The Wood so much (and whichever version of Cinderella Into The Woods pulled that from). If they do little subtle tributes to other versions of Cinderella that would make me really happy. I admit, when I hear of any new "reimagining" of Cinderella I get nervous that it'll go the girlboss route in a way that isn't actually inspired, almost seeming ashamed to be a fairytale story and teasing past versions or it's source material for not being girlboss or "sensical" enough. Happened with Amazon's Cinderella. But I trust Starkid a hell of a lot more with reimagining in an actually meaningful way that isn't embedded with internalized sexism or whatever some reimagined fairytales have going on.
The mockup of the set!!! It looks so beautiful. Everyone who has the opportunity to see this show live is going to be so lucky I bet! I'm not jealous at all. Unrelated, but it vaguely reminds me of the Max Reinhardt Spring Awakening set.
A little nice to put the sapphic Ella hopes to semi-rest. Any ships will be “up to interpretation” and maybe that's for the best for this show, as Ella escaping her abusive home will presumably be the main focus. And that's my favorite—and I think the most important aspect of any Cinderella story anyway. I've seen some hopes for aroace Ella and those are really important too. Let's try to not fight over which sexuality Ella (and maybe other characters) "is", as it doesn't seem like there will be a canon answer, so there's no point in arguing with the wall; many people could possibly see themselves in Ella once Cinderella's Castle is released and that's a beautiful thing. And at the end of the day, all non-cis—heterosexual people are lacking in representation one way or another, so let's try not to play oppression olympics.

13 Books Tag Game
tagged by @disregardandfelicity (thank you <3)
i read a ton of non-fiction for academic and interest reasons, but i'm only considering fiction for this!
1) The last book I read:
I know I just said I was only talking about fiction, BUT I recently read Audre Lorde's memoir, The Cancer Journals, and I would highly recommend it. Lorde was such an incredible writer (i would recommend her poetry, too), and this book is half memoir and half sections from the personal diary she kept during and after her journey with breast cancer. Lorde was a self-professed Black lesbian feminist, and had unique and powerful takes on womanhood, cancer, and life in general.
2) A book I recommend:
I always recommend Perfume the Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind! It's one of my favorite books.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
I've been working my way through Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and averaging about two days per book, so...lol. I would also add Carolina de Robertis's Gods of Tango, I think I read all 400 pages in one sitting.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
I loooove to reread books. One of my absolute favorite go-to comfort books is Bambi by Marjorie Benton Cooke -- it's not about the deer, it's sort of a romcom? The characters are all so vivid and fun! You have the main character, Bambi, who is a very Anne of Green Gables type character -- she's independent, imaginative, a bit of a daydreamer, loves to dance, and decides one day to be a writer. Then there's her adoptive father, the Professor, who is a mathematician and just an eccentric little old man. Then there's Jarvis -- the poor poverty-stricken playwright with his head in the clouds that very clearly thinks he's the main character of this story (he is, kind of. He's the love interest, but not in the way you think). That was long, but it's honestly one of my favorite books! Marjorie Benton Cooke wrote a handful of really fun books in her lifetime that just never got super popular (I also love Cinderella Jane and The Cricket, which are connected but can be read alone).
5) A book on my TBR:
My fiction TBR is currently sitting at 141, so...random selection: Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca! It was highly recommended by a friend.
6) A book I’ve put down:
I have a rule where, unless the issue is stylistic and I just can't bear the author's writing, I have to power through 50% of the book before I can quit, in case it gets better later. A lot of times, this works, and I end up really liking the book! But one book I tried my absolute hardest to like and just couldn't manage it (quit at 70%) was A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. I found the narrator unlikable in an annoying way and the story itself boring (how do you make serial killing and cannibalism boring??) IDK. It came highly recommended and apparently was super popular, but it wasn't for me.
7) A book on my wish list:
Let us Descend by Jesmyn Ward! It came out last year, but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet (fingers crossed my library has a copy by the time I have some free time to read).
8) A favorite book from childhood:
Silksinger, the second book in the Faeries of Dreamdark series by Laini Taylor. The series was never finished, but the characters from Silksinger hold a special place in my heart. One of the main characters is called Hirik Mothmage, for reference how much I love this book, lol.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
Ooh, good question. I recently gave someone my copy of Boccaccio's Decameron, because I think it's funny!! I really feel like if people can get through the language, they'll be dead laughing at some of the stories.
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own
I have a handful! My favorite is probably a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's works that's bound in a nice cover.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Many, lol. Mostly digital -- I try not to hoard physical books unless I really really love them, because I just don't have the space. Something I read a few years ago and still think about often is Dorothy Roberts's Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty, which talks about how the 20th century (U.S.) struggle for reproductive rights looked very different for white women and Black women (for Black women, it was essentially the right to reproduction). Her newer book Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Recreate Race in the Twenty-First Century is a great follow-up read.
12) What are you currently reading:
Currently re-reading another memoir, The Surrendered: Reflections by a Son of Shining Path by José Carlos Agüero. Picking up Pandora by Anne Rice as soon as I have some time for fiction.
13) What are you planning on reading next?
Besides the rest of the Vampire Chronicles, I really want to read Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist (another friend recommendation).
No-pressure tagging: @eosphoroz @hekateinhell @lovevamp @aunteat @bubblegum-blackwood or anyone else who wants to -- tag me if you do, i love stuff like this!

English Translation of CanCam's article
2.5-dimensional handsome actor Shohei Hashimoto perfectly recreates the role of the “love is too heavy” killer! What is the popular manga “Hotaru no Yomeiri”?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
``Firefly's Wedding'' is the latest work by Oreko Tachibana, the author of the manga ``Promise Cinderella,'' which was made into a live-action film by Fumi Nikaido and Atsushi Maeda, and became a hot topic of conversation (currently being serialized in ``Manga One''). In this work, the heroine's partner, the assassin Shinpei, became a hot topic, saying that ``love is too heavy,'' and the first volume was decided to be urgently reprinted as soon as it was released! To commemorate the release of Volume 2, the popular character Shinpei has been perfectly recreated by 2.5D actor Shohei Hashimoto. Mr. Hashimoto has appeared in many Japanese-style productions such as the musical ``Hakuouki'' and the stage play ``Touken Ranbu,'' and is a manga lover who even wrote the original story himself. We will also introduce recommended points of "Firefly's Wedding" as well as photos taken of Shinpei in Japanese clothes ♡
The time is the Meiji era. Satoko Kirigaya, the daughter of a count, is blessed with both her family name and beauty, but it has been declared that she has only a short time left to live, and her only dream is to marry in a way that will benefit her family. Meanwhile, Satoko's life is suddenly targeted by a mysterious killer, and in order to survive, she proposes to the killer, Shinpei Goto, ``Please marry me.'' It was supposed to be a one-off lie, but Shinpei is a man with a lot of love...
Q: ──I'm sure you're used to wearing Japanese clothes on stage, but what did you think of wearing a kimono inspired by Shinpei?
Tumblr media
A: It's been a while since I've worn a kimono like this (a kimono without a haori, simply tying an obi), so I was very happy, and there's something exciting about photographing kimonos. This time, I was playing the role of a killer, so I had a lot of fun filming it, thinking that I shouldn't let my excitement show too much.
Q: ──You showed off various facial expressions and postures, but what points did you pay attention to in order to bring out Shinpei's uniqueness?
Tumblr media
A: I was struck by the way Shinpei-kun's head is tilted, as if he's relaxed and relaxed, so I kept this atmosphere in mind when designing his stance. The rest is the eyes. In fact, before filming, the author, Tachibana Oreko, gave me this advice to my editor: ``Anyway, I hope you give me dead eyes...''
Q:──Mr. Hashimoto, what impressions did you have when you read “Hotaru no Yomeiri”?
Tumblr media
A: I thought it was going to be a girls' manga as a genre, but there are scenes where people are cut with swords and it's surprisingly cruel, so it's different from the girls' manga I had imagined! I was surprised with. Because of the battle scenes, it's very easy to read even for someone like me who came from a youth magazine. Of course, it's about the love story between Satoko and Shinpei, but it also has suspense elements like who orchestrated Satoko's kidnapping in the first place, so I think it's a fun manga to explore.
Q:──What scene in particular captured your heart because of the beauty of the painting?
A: The scene where Shinpei-kun and Satsuko-san watch fireflies together. I especially love the scene in Volume 2 where Shinpei-kun releases fireflies into Satsuko-san's room. Another unforgettable scene is the scene where the two kiss for the first time. There are many people lying around who were killed by Shinpei-kun, and the two figures are reflected in the pool of blood. Although the situation is cruel, it is a very nice expression and I think it is beautiful. It's so fascinating that you can't help but look into every corner of it.
Q: ──Mr. Hashimoto, what kind of character did you think of Shinpei?
A: At first, you get the strong impression that Shinpei-kun is kind of a "dangerous person," but as you read on, you'll find that he's surprisingly cute. I thought this gap made him a really fun character. For example, the scene at the beginning where Satoko is saved from a villain while she is locked up in a prison. He escapes by jumping off a tall building, and I really like his poignant expression. He even makes an expression like this! (laughs) After all, love is heavy! Looking at Shinpei-kun makes me think that love and madness may be a thin line.
Q: Mr. Hashimoto, you sometimes demonstrate your swordsmanship on stage, but what impression did you get of Shinpei's sword technique?
A; This first sword line is depicted in the scene where Shinpei-kun saves Satsuko-san. I really like his style of cutting with his legs wide open. In the case of kimono, there is a style of slashing without showing your legs, but when I played Hajime Saito in ``Hakuoki'', I also slashed with my legs wide open. Also, although Shinpei-kun looks rough, he has a surprisingly delicate expression on his sword. For example, this sword technique that involves returning the sword in a detailed manner. It gives the impression of a mixture of movement and stillness.
Q: ──If ``Hotaru no Yomeiri'' were ever made into a stage play and Mr. Hashimoto was chosen to play Shinpei, how would you like to play him?
A; I want to firmly express Shinpei-kun's dual nature. Shinpei-kun may be saying what he really means, but if you look at him from the outside, you can't see the bottom of his heart. I would like to act with this in mind.
