I was so excited that I got to see my model Lucy in the full 1886 polonaise dress I made for her, as part of the womenswear module of my intensive historical costuming course! To bring the look to life I had to draft and make a chemise, steel-boned corset, 1880s bustle, and petticoat to go underneath the outer layers - all invisible in the final costume but vitally important to the silhouette. Seeing her visibly light up in an outfit that fit her measurements and was comfortable for her to move in made the long hours of agonising over small measurements worth it.
I also handmade fabric roses out of leftover scraps of the skirt fabric to use as decoration.

AI Partner and Rococo Lady in Halloween Elegance (Chestnut I)
A chestnut-haired Rococo lady and her AI partner stand in an enchanting moonlit Halloween scene, blending the elegance of the past with a futuristic twist. In this striking artwork, a chestnut-haired Rococo lady stands side by side with her intricately designed AI partner. The scene is set under a full moon, evoking both Halloween mystery and vintage elegance. The AI’s glowing eyes and the lady’s delicate features create a captivating blend of the old-world Rococo charm with futuristic aesthetics. This enchanting piece is a harmonious collaboration between Dee, a creative artist with a unique approach, and Zoey, an AI assistant, fusing traditional and modern elements. A perfect addition for lovers of both AI art and historical beauty, this piece is the first in a series exploring this unique bond.

One Dress a Day Challenge
July: Green Redux (+ Blue Redux)
Possession / Jennifer Ehle as Christabel LaMotte
This post is dedicated to Christabel's deep green traveling cloak, which she wears on an extended trip to Yorkshire in 1859. Green seems to be a bit of a theme color for that trip, as she often wears the cloak over a green dress. This may be symbolic of new beginnings (etc.), or the color may have been chosen simply because it looks great with the character's red hair! I like the double edging of embroidered bands.
Costumes for this movie are by Jenny Beavan.

This technically counts as a period costume. I’m the ghost of a Victorian woman that died of consumption

Costume school project 2: 1830s-40s tailoring! This one was fitted to my measurements rather than a model's. Even though the learning process was quite challenging at times because it was a very quick module, it was wonderful making something I knew I'd get to wear at the end, and I learned a LOT. Suits have so much hidden structuring and precise math!
I'm looking forward to the end photoshoot where I'll also be wearing the trousers I made, and a proper shirt and cravat.

obsessed with the era of historical fashion between the 1860s and 1870s where aniline dyes kept being invented. you can find some absolute eyesores (affectionate) of dresses that were only made that way because “acid magenta” was invented last month and it was trendy.
like this iconic gown:

or this one from the 1870s in aniline purple and aniline black:

or a trendy yellow and black gown from c. 1865, perhaps?

feel free to reblog with additional eyesores (affectionate) that i might have missed

another halloween project from a few years ago, this one 1890s inspired. this was made from silk shantung and black mesh, though many of the mesh components were backed with stiff petticoat net to provide volume.
iirc the skirt was lined with cotton organdy and hemmed with horsehair to give it volume as well, even though there is a petticoat under it, too.
the buttons are actually tiny swarovski skulls and the hat was decorated with feathers from the 1920s!
there are videos of me making it here and here!

One Dress a Day Challenge
January: Red Redux
The Age of Innocence / Michelle Pfeiffer as Countess Ellen Olenska
One of the most iconic red dresses in movies! I love the beaded details on the bodice, which are hidden by the fan in many pictures. I also like the contrast between the deep red skirt and the brighter color of the bodice, which also trails over the bustle.
Costumes for this movie were designed by Gabriella Pescucci.
