Do you like this brocade? Such a symmetrical floral pattern is called Damask - after Damascus, the capital of Syria. This technique spread to the nearby countries from there. Middle Eastern patterned brocades were well known in the whole region and became famous in Europe since the times of crusades. Such brocades were often made of pure silk or silk blend and had metallic threads in it. They were woven on the looms, by hand, and required a very skillful weavers. With its bold, huge patterns, shining with gold and silver, such fabrics costed a fortune. Only the wealthiest folk could use them for their garments. Damask brocades were given as a luxurious gifts, inherited and cherished. I created this Rococo Grand Court set out of a modern fabric with Damask pattern. The shape of the skirt shows the golden weave in its full glory. I made a tiara-like crown as an accessory for this set.
When I was a kid I thought that the crown has "teeth" by default, and the top is open - like it's often drawn in the cartoons. Later I discovered crowns with closed top that had something on it: a cross, a huge jewel, etc. Such crowns were favored by European monarchs, and there are a plenty of crowns of this type. Do you know Rococo shoes were made symmetrical, without defining left and right shoe? High heeled shoes weren't common in Europe until late Renaissance times. Then high heels became a thing in male fashion during Baroque era, and both genders wore high heels in Rococo times. While male heels were more wide and solid, female ones were super delicate, with kinky curves. The heel tip was moved to the front, so the footprint was much shorter than the foot itself, making an impression that the wearer has tiny feet. The heels were mostly carved out of wood, as it allowed to create any shape. Then they were painted or covered with fabric or leather. I made these shoes for Iplehouse SID feet, and they're not symmetrical, to fit the rigid doll feet better. Rich Indian sari brocade with metallic thread was used for them, and the heels are 3D modeled and printed.

Don’t know if I’ll ever watch the WSS remake, not just because I get a little worried over remakes but… why in every image are the Jets going around in grimy wife beaters? why are you in your undershirt?! Get dressed!!! Maria isn’t running around in her slip (or I hope not).
Idk I just… I’m a costuming and time period nitpicker. It really does not fit “1960s gang to me” like a white T-shirt(tucked in) yes- a tank top? No.

obsessed with the era of historical fashion between the 1860s and 1870s where aniline dyes kept being invented. you can find some absolute eyesores (affectionate) of dresses that were only made that way because “acid magenta” was invented last month and it was trendy.
like this iconic gown:

or this one from the 1870s in aniline purple and aniline black:

or a trendy yellow and black gown from c. 1865, perhaps?

feel free to reblog with additional eyesores (affectionate) that i might have missed

I don't know who needs to hear this today but:
most adult women wore their hair up, on a normal day when going out in public, for most of western history from at least the late Middle Ages until the 1920s. even after that, wearing truly long, unstyled hair entirely loose was not common until the 1960s
not half-up. not in a ponytail. not braided with the braid hanging loose. at times trailing elements were involved, but the majority of the hair would still be pinned up. at times it was also a social norm that the hair would always be mostly or entirely covered when out of the house
and until around the early 19th century, little girls usually wore their hair up too, if it was long
when "putting one's hair up" became a specifically adult thing, around the 1830s or 40s, it was not related to marriage. it was something teen girls did around age 16 as a marker of social adulthood. even if she was unmarried, she'd wear her hair up. this attitude remained until the bob took over hair fashion in the 1920s, and even then, long hair was usually still worn up
obviously people can do what they want with their art but like. just. just please be aware of this
I have not reblogged so much Dracula fanart because the artist inadvertently made Mina and/or Lucy look uncomfortably young, hair-wise

Tight laced control
This might be me looking too into it but I choose it just to be a good interpretation of context clues.
Tumblr media
Satine’s makeover sequence and solo in ‘only girl in a material world’ are some of her strongest character moments in the entire musical. We see the realization slowly dawn on her just how controlling and self obsessed the Duke is when he’s not trying to win her over and keep up appearances. While he does all this in attempts to (literally) buy her love her posture, her clothing , who she is allowed to be around and her entire life are now under his control and his alone. As she’s put into the new dress she is being told that after her performance she is cut off from her world and not completely in his. She’s to live in a toy box until he decides to come play with her.
The greatest show of his maniulative behavior and the grip he has on Satine is in her corset. Now the scene is played off as a joke, she arrives at rehearsal and babydoll fawns over her dress resulting in a “tied down” joke. Satine is tightlaced. A corset shouldn’t hurt you, in fact they were largely comfortable when fitted properly (they were used much like bras today). Tightlacing would contort the body and make the small waist effect- you’d also be wearing it for far longer than the average woman. I believe the Duke, or his men while dressing her pulled her corset far too tight, too close and too much. He wants her to conform to his image so much so he is willing to physically reshape her body. I choose to believe it’s a intentional detail as it demonstrates their dynamic in a subtle way— and adds to Christian recognizing it’s not her doing. (I also like the idea , real or not, of lovers having their own way of re- lacing a corset with their own touch. There’s such a intimacy in that which also heightens this change in Satine’s attire)
