A Jules and Vern Christmas
A time travel story for the Christmas Challenge at @inklings-challenge. This is a follow-up to "Jules and Vern"--a very short piece that explains how the time travel works, so you may want to read that one first.
*
Vernon looked up from his writing in a daze. The papers spread across his kitchen table, the books piled on shelves and chairs across his sparsely-furnished apartment, seemed suddenly unfamiliar. Outside, it was nearly dark, and a light snow shower was falling.
He'd lost track of time--gotten too deep into his writing. This draft of his article was due by the first of the year, and there was so much worth writing about now that he had practical experience--not just theoretical knowledge--of time travel.
He had his new patroness to thank for that. His one and only time travel cruise--paid for with his life savings--had brought him in contact with one of the wealthiest heiresses on the planet, who'd adopted him like a stray cat. She'd guided him through the cruise and even paid to extend his trip. A man in his position couldn't refuse gifts like that--but neither could he repay them.
He looked at the silver-wrapped package sitting on the edge of the table. It seemed silly, giving presents to a woman who could buy him a thousand times over without blinking an eye. He could mail the package next month. Send a nice little note keeping things purely professional.
But it was Christmas. After roaming through history with Juliette, he'd come to consider her a sort of friend. This deserved a personal touch.
He put away his manuscript, seized the package, and left on his errand before he could talk himself out of it.
*
The high-rise hotel, sleek and silver, towered over the squat brown-brick historic buildings of the rest of the street. Bedecked in golden lights, the building looked like a Christmas candle, like a queen among peasants.
Vernon felt like a peasant as he stood in the golden light coming through the glass of the revolving door. A doorman in crisp livery—blue with gold trimmings, a finer suit than anything Vernon had ever worn—took one look at the threadbare elbows of Vernon’s jacket and the holes in his woolen gloves and growled, “Move it along.”
The doorman’s square head reminded Vernon of some of the meaner-looking idols he’d seen on ancient temples. This face would have been a guardian of the underworld, ready to smite the unworthy with the wrath of the gods.
No, he scolded himself. It was the face of a doorman. Of a hotel. Vernon hadn’t walked through ancient battlefields to turn tail because a hotel employee scowled at him.
Vernon held up his package—a silver rectangle. “I’ve a delivery for Miss Juliette—“
The doorman's voice was like something that would have come from one of those stone idols. “She doesn’t take unmarked deliveries.”
Vernon felt like he’d run face-first into a wall. He stepped back and tried to gather his wits. Snowflakes fell down his collar. "If you'll just--"
From behind, a languid female voice drawled, "Vern? Is that you?"
Juliette stood behind him, wrapped in black fur. Her black hat—bedecked with white feathers and an enormous red flower—was wide enough to cover both of them, and her heels were so high that Vernon wondered how she’d managed more than two steps on the icy streets.
Juliette took Vernon's arm and told the doorman, "Relax, Pete, he's with me."
The doorman gave a skeptical stare.
Juliette's laugh sparkled. “Oh, very well.” She tugged Vernon by the arm. “We’ll roam the streets.”
Juliette took Vernon down the sidewalk, past the stores of this wealthy shopping district. These shops were nothing compared to the astonishing height of the modern hotel, but their wares were so rich Vernon half-feared he'd be charged a fee just for looking.
Juliette strode through the snowy streets with perfect confidence, never looking at a shop, never stumbling in her heels. “What brings you here, my darling little scholar?”
Compared to the wares being sold just outside her door, Vernon's offering seemed pathetic, but there was no help for it now.
He held out the package. "I brought a gift.”
Juliette stopped and tipped back her hat so she could look him in the face. “Gift?”
Could he call this a gift when her world meant so much more by the name? Jewels, cars, vacations—those were gifts. This was—
“A...small token,” he amended. “In honor of the holiday."
"Holiday?" Juliette seemed truly perplexed. At last, she laughed, low and languid. "Oh, Christmas. How quaint!"
Her laugh made Vernon bristle. Not for the first time, he wondered if she'd ever had a heart.
"I ought to have known you celebrated," she said. “It's so earnest and wholesome--like you."
“You don’t celebrate?”
“I haven’t paid attention in years.”
“Why?”
“When you’ve experienced every single Christmas in history, it gets rather dull.”
“Every—”
“Christmas cruises. Some time travelers try to hit every Christmas Day in history. They get so insufferable about it.”
Not for the first time, Vernon’s mind swam at the unimaginable wealth this implied.
Juliette said, “I decided against the full set. It’s just not worth it. The first one’s off-limits, of course, and then there's nothing really interesting until the Arians show up. But even in the most exciting years, it's all variations of the same thing, isn't it? Food and fires and presents and songs and various states of inebriation. There's only so much of that kind of thing one can take."
Vernon's chest burned--a bit of shame, a lot more anger. He tucked the silver-wrapped package beneath his arm. "I'm sorry I wasted your time," he said, turning away.
Juliette grabbed his arm. "Wait!” The languid tone had been replaced by genuine alarm. “Don't listen to my nonsense. It was kind of you to think of me."
Her eyes, amber in the streetlight, held some deep spark that Vernon had never seen before. A hint of genuine feeling. She was truly afraid of being alone. Vernon felt a pang of pity.
He handed her the gift.
She tore off the wrapping and uncovered a hardback book. The crimson cover glowed like an ember against the black of her furs.
"The first copy of my latest work," Vernon said. It didn’t sound so pathetic when he put it that way. "A treatise upon the interactions of parallel time streams, supplemented by observations from our travels."
She turned the book in her gloved hands, looking at it from all angles. “It looks disgustingly academic.”
"Exceedingly so."
She grinned. “I’m delighted, and I’ll never read it.
Vernon relaxed into a smile. "I didn't think you would. But I thought you deserved a copy all the same."
She put the book into a massive handbag. "I feel I ought to have a gift for you."
Vernon laughed. "A time cruise is a gift I could never repay.”
"Would you like another one?" Juliette asked.
Vernon stepped back, his hands held before him. "I couldn't accept such--"
"Just a short one. A cheap Christmas trip. Horribly touristy. Everyone and their mother heads to the Victorian era for a proper Dickens Christmas. The place is crawling with time travelers."
Vernon thought about the book in Juliette's bag, and his mind lit up with a new theory. "That would explain the ghost stories--"
She pointed at him, her eyes bright. "See? That's the mind that could make even that kind of Christmas interesting again."
It was flattering, and tempting, and yet--
"I think you're missing the point," Vernon said.
“Am I?” Juliette drawled, one eyebrow raised.
“Yes,” Vernon said firmly. “You don't need to run off and watch a Christmas that's already happened. You need to experience this one."
She waved a dismissive hand. "I've seen a thousand like it."
Vernon wondered how literal that was. How many Christmases had she traveled to--?
He pulled his mind back to the point. "I'm not sure you've seen any Christmas. You've seen parties, feasting, carols, but you haven't seen Christmas. The reason for the celebration. I'm not sure you can see it."
“I know," she said. "That’s why I need you.”
Snow fell onto her expensive furs, white against the black. A cold breeze ruffled the flower on her hat. She was a fashion plate, the model of luxury--and she looked so alone. All the money in the world, able to buy anything she wanted, go to any place or time she desired on a moment's notice--and she had no one to spend Christmas with.
He took her hand in his, tattered wool against sleek leather. "Then I'll come with you. But not to Victorian Christmas. To this one."
She raised an eyebrow “The time travel expert is turning down a chance to time travel?”
“Gladly."
"You'll never get anywhere in your career if you keep turning down opportunities like this."
"I'll take the risk."
She looked at their joined hands, then shifted her grip to turn it into a handshake. “You have a deal.”
Snow fell faster, thick white flakes. The shops along the street began turning off the lights in their windows. In the distance, church bells sounded.
Vernon inclined his head toward it. “We can start there.”
As the snow fell and the bells rang, Vernon tightened his grip on Juliette’s hand and pulled her down the street. In the lamplight, her eyes held a spark of something that looked a little bit like joy.
#the bookshelf progresses#sci fi#time travel#big surprise i wrote something other than what i said i'd write#this was supposed to be a quick flash fiction because i wanted to have it done on christmas eve#but i ran out of time#you would not believe how much time it takes to write a short piece like this#the number of times i changed their setting and situation#even this morning's edit that was supposed to be a quick proofread turned into an hour and a half of adjustments#really i only wrote the story for like three lines of worldbuilding#i'm sure you can tell what they are#and i just built up the character interactions so it'd have a story around it#it's horribly vague but any attempt to get less vague was just horribly clunky#(i couldn't even fit in basic details)#(juliette does have family. but her father never leaves his office)#(and her mother doesn't want her paramours to know she's old enough to have a daughter juliette's age)#(neither one has ever wanted to spend christmas with her)#anyway here you go i hope it fits in with the previous story

I love that In Stars and Time gives the nonconsensual kiss a proper horrified reaction, by the way. Most media where a character can kiss someone out of no where either make it a funny thing or the "romantic" thing, but here Siffrin kisses without permission out of no where and Isabeau reacts correctly! He pushed them away! Because thats surprising, and fucked up to do to someone with no lead up and no permission! Isabeau had no context, and at the time when the kiss happened, was under the impression that Siffrin didn't like touch which can have a variety of horrible reasons for it. Not only that but... We don't know what face Siffrin was pulling and I don't think it was a nice one. Which, again, means that we don't have all the context either! This is a horrible event that has horrible consequences and I love that it does. Because it's something that is horrible and objectively one of the worst things Siffrin did to one of the others in the loops, so I'm just!!! So excited it had bad consequences!!!
#Isat#Isat Siffrin#Isat Isabeau#bad touch event#Isat spoilers#I dunno I think it's great commentary actually cause this game has a very big focus on forcing change on others#And how that can affect people who are AceAro of some flavors#Which is so interesting because Siffrin tells Mira she doesn't need to change that part of herself and that they are like her#At least in the ace part. And then they do this? Try to force a change in a way that they had just denounced?? Its!! Interesting!!!#Also don't fucking look at me I'm just getting sad about how many characters get nonconsensual kissed in media#And it's framed as a ''good'' thing#Anyway as a fellow Ace... Seeing Siffrin do that makes me both excited and horrified because I'm sure Siffrin has their own experiences wit#Hearing threats like that or getting harassed about kisses and stuff and the fact that they turn around and do it to Isa...AAAAAHH!! yaknow#I know that parts not canon but fellow aces... You know what I'm talking about! I just can't imagine Siffrin doesn't have at least one#Moment like ours!!! Hhhhhhhnnnnnn

Okay I know I'm the most biased person about dadmare, but you can't honestly tell me that if Cross started to mention the way xgaster treated him and his brother as children - the way an adult bullied and belittled and abused them - that it wouldn't make Nightmare see red
#UTDR#UTMV#Dadmare#Like the call is coming from inside the house again!!#Nightmare trying to be detached and collected to prove he doesn't have a familial attachment to his henchmen#And then he hears that Cross was treated badly by adults as a child and he's instantly like ''I'll kill him myself''#I just#Okay#Wick very nicely talked to me about Cross and dadmare yesterday and I'm still whipping it around like a dog with a new toy#LIKE I just think it could be a little healing for both of them#For Cross to get someone in an authoritative role who praises and appreciates him and refuses to treat him like that#And for Nightmare it must be at least a little rewarding to see someone who went through hell as a child and do everything you can to make#-them comfortable and tell them it wasn't their fault#Like I'm sure he still has stuff from his incident to process and maybe sharing it with Cross could do that#Obviously it's not 1 to 1 on what they went through but it might be similar enough to be cathartic#I don't know I just want to see them get along#I want Cross to have a father figure that would tear the multiverse in half to save him#I want Nightmare to learn to love and show it#I want 16 days off work in a row so I can lie in bed and go insane about this

lottie + hugs
#i'm sure i missed some but these three are wild to me with how they show the passage of time and everything that happened in between#like that first one is her still doubting her visions but yet making sure to give van the lil amulet and telling her to be safe#and then the laura lee hug </3 a hopeful hug conveying faith that maybe she with her crazy idea to fly the plane could do it!#that this girl who listened to her showed her kindness and made her feel like she wasn't crazy for the first time in her life could do it!!#a chance to save them all!! and then the explosion happened. turning this hopeful hug into a goodbye hug </3#and then ofc the mari one. filled with guilt heartbreak and the realization of how dangerous and unpredictable the wilderness is#god you can so clearly see the guilt in her face; blaming herself for what happened to javi and what her friends had become#anyways i want to give her the biggest of hugs and tell her everything's gonna be okay :c#lottie matthews#charlotte matthews#courtney eaton#van palmer#laura lee#mari yellowjackets#akilah yellowjackets#yellowjackets#my post ♡

In further adventures of "Hollywood should have just asked us," here are a couple ideas that would make for a decent new version of Snow White. Stone and I came up with them last night.
First off, the dwarves are just normal people for that region. By that I mean dwarfism is commonplace in the kingdom, which we see from various side characters and background extras. These seven are normal folks, not Fantasy Creatures.
Also, they're a family living and working together. Our first thought was seven brothers, but why stop there? Doc is old enough to be the dad. Grumpy can be the uncle. Re-envision some of the others to be the mom and a sister or two. Dopey is the youngest kid, still figuring his way around a pickaxe.
And the other idea is about the kiss. If that magic leads to a "time is paused while we have an adventure elsewhere" kind of otherworldly journey, then Snow White and the Prince can get to know each other properly. They can rescue each other from various dangers in whatever dreamland this is, find out they can actually work together pretty well, and only then does the spell release.
You've got to be drift compatible to take down a sorceress and rule a kingdom. The dwarves will help. There are probably magical gemstones from those mines, not to mention lots of muscles from swinging a pickaxe all day. Hi-ho!
#snow white#have some random thoughts from last night#Hollywood should have asked us#I'm sure lots of other people also have good ideas that would be better than what this new movie is shaping up to be#I'd love to hear more#thwart those tropes#dwarves#how do you make token representation less problematic?#you make it not a token#this doesn't have to be a middle earth type of world with separate species#it can be like our world#y'know the one where people that height do actually exist#and not for plot reasons#and also:#drift compatible#saving the kingdom by working magic together#you can't tell me that wouldn't be great

severance s1e8 what's for dinner?
man, what is going on at waffle house these days
#severance#severanceedit#dylan george#the four tempers#waffle party#severancegifs#mygifs#this show generally is more subtly surreal but this scene was the first time i was truly taken aback and like what the fuck#it just felt like about ten steps over into eyes wide shut twin peaks territory out of the blue#also i'm thinking is this like. work-endorsed jacking off time? is that the perk? what do severed people know about sex anyway#i haven't read anything about this show so i'm sure there's lots of smart and thoughtful takes on it and analysis about these things#but i do like to watch shows in my bubble with my reactions and thoughts contained to what's going on in my brain#for better or worse#speaking of for a minute i was like oh baby goats! and the painting! and the guy in the mask! but then i was like-#oh wait. isn't that a ram? that's a sheep. LOL#cue me searching how to tell teh difference between goats and sheep. tl;dr it actually can be really hard#so maybe there's a goat that has those type of horns? haha#also my appreciation of a little detail - that's clearly like. pancake syrup not maple syrup because maple doesn't do that stringy sticky#like let's not get too excited here. you get waffles but you're not getting the fancy syrup lol

Tbh I feel like going to the US while the Nazis are in power is suicidal. So of course I don't understand your choice of going instead of your SO coming to Europe. But while I don't understand, I wish and pray for you to be safe. Whatever you choose, I hope you guys will be okay
You might be right. I have no idea what the future has in store or if I'll come to regret it. But I've already stated my reasons. As it stands, with the year-long process we've already started and that we can't just flip on a dime overnight, my partner can't come and stay in Europe legally just like that. Legal immigration is not that easy in one way or the other. Also... Yeah, I've stated that before, but one shouldn't underestimate how shitty things have been getting in Europe for the past few years as well, and how the influence of the US (which is huge) is likely to make things worse. So again I'm not 100% sure whether that'd have been better anyway.
Also also... Ima be real, I've shared that before, but the time where I was separated from my partner due to the travel ban was the only time in my life where I had actual suicidal ideation. I don't want this to happen again. That's why I'm making moves so it doesn't, first and foremost.
#tw sui ideation#tw sui talk#again i can't just pick and choose it's actually a really tough process and not just something i can go willy nilly about#it's a bit of a headache having people telling me otherwise#i'll do what i can and we'll keep doing our best to stay safe but it's not like i can just switch roads overnight#i wish i could but it's never as simple#or maybe it is for people who are already us citizens i have no idea#but i'm not quite sure#either way tbh i'm not sure moving to europe as so many people are throwing in online rn is that great a solution either#europe is the us's playground and geopolitically its bitch#some things definitely are better than in the us but in a world where money rules everything i don't feel it's quite as fool proof#as everyone makes it sound#as someone who was born and raised there respectfully#who's felt that influence for life#and btw as someone who also grew up not speaking english and who had to painstakingly learn#don't think you can just move to a random country you can't speak the language of and that everyone will be as nice about it#as if you were a tourist#language is important#my partner doesn't speak my country's language#so yep there's that#i've already said that several times anyway it's getting tiresome#we COULD have tried for the UK in a timeline where those dumbasses didn't choose to leave the EU#but that ship sailed almost 10 years ago#i wonder if anyone realizes that#sorry for saying that after such a wall of text but thank you for the concern though sincerely

Will you PLEASEEEE make a caretaking audio? I just think it would be so sweet to listen to your take on a sick listener.
I was not entirely sure how to do this, and I don't really love my voice so it was a bit hard to imagine what this should be, but I tried to use the actual voice I use with people irl when they need comfort, mixed with a few of the phrases/pet names I'd normally use, all in all I hope this came off alright?~ is a little less 'listener' though a little more 'partner', scenario type deal, but I hope that's still comforting/good?~
#technically not a wav? since there's no snz? i think?#waterfallwav#for simplicity/ease of finding it i'll put it as that still tho but it does not have snz in it#anyways i hope this is okay/slightly what you wanted!!!#never done something like this before so i'm not sure how it turned out/if it's okay#but i have had people irl tell me they find this tone of voice comforting so..... hopefully it's good?#it might... also slightly be my 'talking to animals' voice.... but shhhhhh#its just my 'comfort' voice okay T-T#anyways uhhhhh not sure what else to put here or tag this as so!!! im just gonna throw this out there#and hope that at least one person can enjoy it~

I did not get into Game of thrones when it first started airing. In fact, I waited until it was long past it's heyday (around s6 or 7) to check it out because the marketing and the conversation surrounding it misled me into thinking it was nothing more than "grimdark" bullshit. As one famous YouTuber sarcastically called it "hot fantasy that fucks." So, I avoided Martin's work for literal years due to the impression that I got from online reactors and show-only casuals who did as you and a few others have described as his work being fundamentally misinterpreted.
Fortunately, I overcame my hang-ups, purchased the books (even the supplementary material) and fell down an entire rabbit hole of ASOIAF which led me to recognizing that this world he spent decades creating is far more complex than what had been portrayed onscreen. Regardless of the possibility of the books remaining unfinished (which I am fine with, personally), what George has created is a genuine work of art that I imagine took a tremendous amount of time and energy. So, for so many people online to behave like children and throw tantrums because they feel entitled to him (ew) instead of ushering forth more reasonable conversations and legitimate debates about the nature of his situation frankly makes me look at this fandom with a heavy dose of skepticism.
It is truly baffling to hear even professional critics and see articles describing George as being "ungrateful" or "unprofessional" when it has been well-documented just how often authors get locked out of the adaptation process and left to the wayside as consultants. Look at what happened to Rick Riordan and Christopher Paolini! George R.R. Martin is not the only author to have qualms with how a multimillion dollar studio has mishandled his creative work, and to act like he should remain silent just because he's amassed a certain degree of wealth is quite frankly, ridiculous. He shouldn't have to settle down, be grateful, and stay quiet because the greedy corporate executives and their media drones will get offended by actual criticism that could alter the perception of the adaption being revealed as mediocre for having departed from the source material.
TLDR: authors should be allowed to speak up about their art being sacrificed for commercialization.
Thank you so much for this message, anon! This needs to be talked about more, because I don't think a lot of commentators truly understand the vulgar, late-capitalistic sheen that seems to set in and slowly poison any ASOIAF adaptation. It honestly baffles me how quick some members of this fandom are to rush to the defense of, what is essentially (let's not be kidding ourselves here), a cashgrab by a giant corporation to the detriment of the actual artist and the actual creative foundation behind it.
Why else would "MAX" (if that is even their name) make another (or several other) ASOIAF adaptations? Not to stay true to any philosophical aesthetic vision, as it has become more than apparent with Season 2, but to increase shareholder profits by appealing to the lowest common denominator. Even the basic premise has been shifted in order to address popular trends and satisfy the mindless consumer that doesn't want to engage with anything deeper than their favourite tropes, prettily packaged:
from a story about a doomed ouroborous family superimposed on the pitfalls of feudalism, with villainy and heroism to be found on both sides, it has been simplified and reduced to a narrative that exalts white feminism and disqualifies anyone who opposes its girlboss protagonist. This is Sheryl Sandberg's version of Fire and Blood.
Truly, I think Sara Hess did (unintentionally) outline it the best: "civilians don't matter in Game of Thrones". They don't matter in Game of Thrones, but they matter in A Song of Ice and Fire. The entire heart of the series is contained in Septon Maribald's speech. The writers "kind of", must have forgotten, though.
#she sure showed her entire ass with that comment#that and (to a lesser extent) 'oh i read the books a long time ago'. girl. we can tell.#(and don't think i'm letting ryan condal off the hook - he is the main shill in this equation)#ask#anon#grrm#house of the dragon#hotd s2#also i'm not in any way able to speak on grrm's behalf here because i don't know the man's prior financial situation#but a lot of writers would probably sell the rights to their books if asked#because it would finally mean they would have financial stability#in a field that pays notoriously very little. it's very difficult to support yourself as a professional writer. you'd have to sell a ton#and there's no saying when your popularity will suddenly declin and the cheques stop coming. what if you never have another good idea again#so do not be so quick to judge writers for 'selling out' or whatever the hell. they're trying to make a living too
