Writeblr Intro circa 2024
Hi writeblr!! Sooo, I've been around here since about 2014. (Yes, I am ancient.) However, I've been dormant for the past 4-5 years. Blame college and a brief stint on Twitter. Now that I'm active again, I thought I should make an updated writeblr intro so ppl know my Deal. Basically, I want to engage with other folks who write fiction (esp original SF), and that's a little easier if I have a clear post that outlines what I do. Here to make connections and hear about your blorbos :)
About me
Hi, I'm Vee! They/them, 23, 💖 🤍 🧡
I do journalism/comms in western New York
My literary jam is feminist/adult SF and gothic lit (OG or modern) 🥀 ⚔️ 🌙
Enthusiastic about gay people, body horror, and sociopolitical allegories
I cook, run, play tabletop games, and occasionally draw. Other than that, I'm mostly writing (for work and for fun)
If you were on pre-2020 writeblr, you likely know me from my eight billion daily tag games. (I still like tag games and appreciate u for tagging me. I have also gained adult responsibilities and better mental health, so I respond very slowly now. <3)
Always happy to get asks or dms, tho as I've noted: I may reply slowly.
Sometimes open to beta read! I only read one longer project at a time, but it's always super fun :)
I tag very consistently – happy to tag triggers for followers/moots
Fun fact: I love mushroom hunting and worked as a mycology TA. #cottagecoreera 🍄 🧚♀️ 🌱
About my creative writing
I write,,,, feminist/adult SF with gothic leanings (surprise!)
Longform and short! Trying to do more short writing this year, and I'll likely share a bit on Tumblr. It's easier to clip a short story than a 150k novel, god bless.
The Aesthetic: moral g(r)ays, Victoriana, androids/cyborgs, Women™, monstrous femininity, incessant Hamlet/Frankenstein motifs, extremely boring socioeconomic worldbuilding, evil queens and/or dilfs, psychosexual witchcraft, probably a cat. Also, an ominous, plot-relevant letter laced with anthrax from your unhinged and brilliant ex-wife. Open if you dare.
Major projects
I'm going to be writing some short work this year, but these are the longer projects that I have going in the background. If I reblog blorbo-related text posts, they probably have something to do with these.
Let me know if you want to be added to any project-specific taglists 😎
Heart of Lead – Series
The big one
Perpetually evolving
Never ceasing
Pls send help I can't stop adding shit
5-book gothic fantasy epic that I'll definitely publish one day but probably no time soon! My bastard child, my wicked firstborn, my greatest love <3
Character-oriented political drama set in a pseudo-Victorian, dystopian oligarchy where everyone's heart is made out of metal. It's about coming of age and discovering queer identity in a world that is absolutely fucked. God is an extraterrestrial lesbian who gives ppl very traumatizing magic powers. There are cyborgs, shapeshifters, and morally gray women in STEM. It's tight as fuck idk what else what to tell u.
Book 1 is about achillean monarchists, and book 2 is about sapphic anarchists. There are only two genders, I guess.
At this point, I've drafted most of the books at least once. Working to refine a lot of raw material atm!
Tag: "heart of lead tag" or "hol tag"
Lost Letters – Book
Aka the current active HoL WIP, and book one in the revised series structure
Length: 80k as of now; around 120-140k when the first draft is finished, I presume.
Genre: adult fantasy, gothic, noir detective drama?? um?? If you want me to frame it in BookTok terms (why?) it's a dark academia villain x villain tragic romantasy. Hrgh.
Summary: Cyborg soldier goes to college, joins a shady socialite frat, and falls in love with the jilted heir-apparent to the throne. Hilarity ensues.
(By "hilarity," I mean a militant revolutionary faction and a tragedy of Greek proportions.)
POV characters: Charles (the cyborg), Dale (the heir), and Cecelia (Charles' sister, a junior detective, the love of my life and potentially the Chosen One???)
This book is twisty and dark and immensely fun to write.
I'm about halfway through the first full draft! Hoping to share snippets and vaguepost about my children here.
Tag: "lost letters tag" (also "hol tag," tho that one's less specific)
The Last of Mortal Tourists – Book
The next longform project on the docket!
Length: a standalone work that will hopefully fall on the shorter novel/novella spectrum.
Genre: literary SF, cyberqueer, psychological space quest
Summary: The consciousness of a dead coding genius, trapped inside a spaceship, seeks a new planet to sustain their sister, the last surviving human, after the destruction of Earth.
If you're here to get wildly philosophical about gender and the myth of essential self, this is the story for you! That's why I'm writing it, lol. 🏳️⚧️ 🚀 🤖
This one started out as a short story (100% finished) which I want to expand.
POV: Archer Alto, the coder. Spaceship? Human? Soul?
Supporting Cast: Pandora, the last human, and Abby, a holographic impression of Archer's childhood consciousness
Tag: "the last of mortal tourists tag" or "tlomt tag"
If you read all this way, you get a whole bouquet of flowers that are certainly NOT poisonous: 🌸 🌹 💐 🥀 🌺
<3

Hello !! I’m here for the CoD matchup !! -feigned 💌
-I’m Asexual, i’m attracted to all genders as well!
-My personality type is INFP-T-
-I’m relatively average in height, around 5’6/5’7
-I’m not a very loud person, I tend to avoid conflicts, and I’m quite the people pleaser at times
-I have social anxiety and often struggle with loud noises + crowds
-I’m a bit introverted when it comes to meeting people, and awkward, but when I get to know someone I tend to be more open, and crack more jokes with them
-I have various interests, but I really like studying up on niche subjects, my favorite being mycology!
-I also don’t have any preferences when it comes to looks / gender of my partner
(Tried to keep this short for u bcus i know those long matchup asks can be a pain 😭💌)
I'd match you withhhhhhh
Nikto! (I'm sorry if you don't like this one)
Just so you know, I try to write him as realistically as possible, but this is just my interpretation. He's a character, and has no solid set-in stone personality.
that being said, here you go :)
Okay so I know a huge chunk of people getting a matchup end up getting Simon (i think it's because he's really popular, and not bc they actually match up good) when someone says they're quiet or an introvert, but from what you've told me, I think Nikto fits better for you.
A bit of important backstory for him:
He was a deep cover agent for Russia's Federal Security Service but on a mission he was taken by someone named "Mr. Z" and was tortured. His face and body are covered in scars, extremely so. He wears a mask to cover his face, always. Due to what happened to him, he developed Acute Dissociate Disorder. It shows a good amount in his voice lines. He refers to himself as "we" a lot and talks about how he hears voices.
"I hear enough voices, I don't need another!"
"Nobody hurts our friends and gets away with it!"
He's a very "get shit done" guy. He does make some dry humor jokes though.
Due to how he always is hearing someone talk (in his head) I think he would really appreciate someone who is quiet. Not that he wouldn't want to talk to you, but you being on the more quiet side definitely helps him adjust. You being able to find a creative way around some of his struggles would help a lot. For example; Where a lot of people would be like "why don't you just stop saying we instead of I", which would cause a sort of tension between them and him, you would let him refer to himself as "we" but you would continue to say "you" as a subtle grounding.
(Just an example, not a solid thing)
I feel like he would really like your niche interests. It's hard to truly keep his attention outside of work, especially if they're just common things. So if you were to be reading a book on fungi in Russia, he might see that and be like "wtf?" and interest might be piqued. Idk I feel like he wouldn't really be interested in things unless they were niche (that's where you come in!). He'd probably make some dry as joke that isn't even that funny, but his blank stare and dead delivery would be hilarious.
You both struggle with social anxiety and don't like social settings. He's a soldier, so he has ways to sort of deal with it. If you're really uncomfortable or are worried something will happen, he's right there with you with a hand on your back (it also helps him ground himself when the thought of something happening to you pops up). He's very loyal to those who actually get through to him. Say you're talking to someone who is making you uncomfortable. He'd probably just say something to you, in front of them, like "we're leaving" and just bring you with him. He's socially,, idek. He's awkward. Not in a shy way, just a "wtf are social rules" way. He means well, have mercy.
Once he gets close to you, and realizes he wants you in his life, that's it. Unless you try to take his mask off without his permission, or betray him, he's staying. He loves like a dog. A feral, hungry, desperate for scraps dog. You know the ones. The street dogs that will fight anyone and cling to you when you give them bread. They're still aggressive, just not towards you. Just a bit rough around the edges.
I see a lot of people writing him as sexist or homophobic, but I really don't see him that way. Honestly, I think what happened to him really changed how he thinks. I think a lot less means anything to him. He has to go fight in literal wars, who gives a fuck abt who wants to be with who? Who cares about women wanting to be independent? I don't think he cares. He barely talks to people as is, why would he care about what they do?
I can almost guarantee that if you get hurt, he's gonna take care of you. He's used to the major injuries (broken bones, deep cuts, etc) so he might think he needs to take care of your small ones the same way. He's trying. He cares about you. He's learning.
One thing you'll never need to worry about is him cheating or leaving you. He very rarely lets people in, and never thought he'd find love, but he found you. You're his, he's yours. Simple.
As for sex, not even an issue. I think he could either be hypersexual or asexual. Let's go with asexual for this matchup. I said he cares about a lot of things less than before his torture, and I mean it. A common occurrence with PTSD or just being recently traumatized is lack of interest in things, and that can include sex. I think his sex drive is basically nonexistent. He might jack off, but that's really so there aren't physical issues. It takes him a really long time to warm up to touches, even if they're kind ones. Sex wouldn't even be on the table. If you don't pick up on this, and tell him you're asexual, he'd probably shrug it off. He'd probably just say something like "me too" (after you explain it) and that would be that.
Learning to cuddle or initiate contact would be an interesting experience. He probably would stiffen up when you hold his hand for the first time. But after a while of gentle touches and soft words of how these are safe touches, he'd grow to like them. It would take a while, but he'd get there.
He cares. He wants you, and he'll do his best to do good for you. No relationship is perfect, but growing together is a big part of them.

So, I saw your twst isekai idea post, and had IDEAS!
so I'm not super familiar with most of those series/fandoms, BUT...
What came to mind for me was Stardew Valley (since it's been on my mind recently). I don't know how familiar you are with the game, but I think that if he was isekai'd there, Jade would THRIVE as a farmer! I mean, he's got a green thumb and knows about plants. There's a mountain (with a mine), plenty of local flora to forage, and a possibility for a MUSHROOM CAVE on the farm. He'd LOVE IT!! Plus, the people in town are incredibly interesting - he'd never get bored there. And he's sketchy clever and resourceful enough to know how to get what he wants. His family are suggested to also be 'businesspeople', after all :)
Epel would also do just fine there, obviously. He already comes from a farming family, so I imagine he'd do a good job setting up an orchard in Stardew Valley.
On the other hand, I think that Idia would STRUGGLE in that situation. He's very clever, but NOT GOOD with new people, or much manual labour. And unless he already knew about gardening/farming/foraging/fishing/etc. from a game or series, he'd probably be totally lost on how to manage. (It would probably be pretty funny for us, but very stressful for him.)
(I put a buncha stuff under a 'read more' because I wrote. Many words lol)
I LOVE STARDEW VALLEY I'VE BEEN PLAYING IT ON MY SWITCH AND HAVING SO MUCH FUN OBLITHERATING PIERRE IN THE STARDEW VALLEY FAIR (I care about this a normal amount)
AND YESS FARMER JADE!!! OMG HE WOULD PROBABLY MAKE THE MUSHROOM CAVE HIMSELF BEFORE DEMETRIUS EVEN THINKS ABOUT SUGGESTING IT TO HIM!
Just,,, Demetrius showing up at Jade's house and being all 'hello I could set up a mushroom cave for you if you want' and Jade showing off his already thriving mushroom colonies completely filling the space lmao. I wonder if they'd be mycology buddies with how Demetrius is a biologist (iirc)
He'd love to forage in the surrounding areas and hike around the forests - and fishing! I remember him being super passionate about everything in the Camp Vargas stories he was in and I just love how he can get so happy when he's able to indulge in his interests.
(I wonder if he would mess with some of the villagers by swimming in the ocean in his merform... I may end up shipping him with Elliott if I think about that too much - typical bachelor on the beach falls for the mysterious merperson in the ocean typa story idk my brain is running away from me haha)
----
EPEL WITH AN ORCHARD YES!
He would be in his element! I can imagine him with expertise from what his family taught him on his farm - how to selectively breed plants to make the best produce, how to graft two parts of heirloom species of plants together to get the best traits from both (like the roots from a tomato plant bred to resist root diseases and the stem from a plant that produces large, delicious fruits! I've seen a video about it and it was really cool lol)
And he has the type of face and vibe that I feel like would make older ladies fawn over him a little if that makes sense? Like Marnie, Caroline, and Jodi - their group. Like, he's polite because of his time with Vil, he's quite short and has a boyish face, he's hardworking etc. I can see him receiving cookies from Evelyn and stuff like that.
----
AND LMAO IDIA SUFFERING HAHA
I'd say that he'd get along with Sebastian but I doubt that they'd end up meeting with how neither of them really go outside (I know from waiting outside Sebastian's door before I thought to look up his schedule online haha)
Idia's internal dialogue would probably be an absolute disaster haha - he is NOT built for this environment! There's too much focus on socialisation! And his noodly gamer arms cannot do farming! He would be having a Bad Time and it would definitely be funny to watch it pan out haha
At least there's a chance that he could have some meta knowledge due to the fact that he's a gamer. Maybe it'll be exactly like some sorta game from Twisted Wonderland called 'SunMist Hollow' (I just searched synonyms for that haha)

Oakie the Acorn is the Best Mascot Ever
I don’t even go to this school I just love them. Here’s an interview they did for SUNY Mascot Madness.
Oakie - SUNY ESF
Who are you, where are you originally from, and where do you do your mascot thing? I'm Oakie Acorn (they/them), proud representative of ESF and its Mighty Oaks athletic teams! I was “born” when I fell out of ESF's Robin Hood Oak which means my roots go back to the Major Oak in England's Sherwood Forest. Maybe that's why I'm so merry! While most of my mascot duties have me in Syracuse, I also pop in at our Ranger School in Wanakena and our satellite campuses in the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands.
What's a unique new thing (building, club, activity, employee, etc.) on your campus that you treasure? The newly renovated Marshall Hall is wonderful! Open since 1933, Marshall underwent a major two-year reno re-opening in 2023. We kept the classic features, such as the spiral staircase and auditorium, while updating the building to a state-of-the-art learning center with spaces tailored to the needs of today's students. The building is home to our Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, and mathematics programs. Along with great classroom and studio space, there are plenty of study nooks for students to tuck in and do work between classes or meet with friends.
If you could start your own club or major on campus, what would it be? Wow! Difficult question because ESF has so many unique clubs, activities, and majors already! That said, I'd love to start an a capella group – Oak-apella! I don't speak, but I have a song in my heart and would love to hear ESF students sing. Maybe I could do some interpretive dance while they sing.
What's your hidden talent that you haven't told anyone about yet? Anyone on campus at night might have seen me skateboarding. The other day I landed a kickflip over the gap and was pretty stoked. Sadly, no one was around to see it. Flicks or it didn't happen, right? We do have some talented campus artists who have drawn me and my board though.
What campus cheer gets you pumped up and why? (with great enthusiasm) O-A-K-I-E! They're our acorn can't you see? Sprouting strong through day and night We've got bark and we've got bite! ESF Orientation Leaders chant this while they lead our newest acorns to convocation. I love hearing it echo off the campus buildings!
What sport would you play if you were a student-athlete? I would join the Bass Fishing team in a heartbeat! I know when you think “acorn,” you think “land-based,” but I'd love to get out on the water and drop a line or two. There's so much more to me than most people know. I would look awesome in one of the Bass Fishing team jerseys – provided they could get me an XXXXXL.
Read any good books lately? The Climate Optimists Handbook by environmental activist Anne Therese Gennari is a great read. Her book is about empowering people to get excited about changing the narrative on climate change so we act from courage and excitement to co-create a better world. She totally gets the ESF vibe! She was our commencement speaker last May and inspired our graduates and their guests to Improve Our World! And of course, Braiding Sweetgrass by our own Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer is always close at hand to read again and again!
Favorite pizza topping? Mushrooms. I love to top my pie with things I've foraged in the woods. Remember, you have to be very careful with mushrooms. I always take along a friend who has taken Dr. Alex Weir's mycology course to ensure I don't eat anything that could make me sick or worse!
If you were SUNY Chancellor for a day, what would you do? I would declare every day Earth Day in SUNY and plant pollinator gardens on every campus. I would also help other campuses set and reach their own Zero-Waste goals. Sustainability is a key component to helping the environment. I would then ask to be Chancellor for a couple more days to visit as many campuses as possible and see all the great things SUNY students are doing. I don't know how Chancellor King does it all! Does he ever sleep?
How would you celebrate being named SUNY Mascot Madness Champion in 2024? The same way I celebrated in 2017 when I won the title – surrounded by the best students, faculty, and staff ever! We had a party that the whole campus attended. My friend, Victor E. Knight from SUNY Geneseo, was gracious enough to come and present me with the trophy and join the festivities. I think it would be great to host Wolfie on campus this year.

The conidiophore of a Penicillium fungus. Referenced from Radical Mycology by Peter McCoy (pg. 7).
I've been really inspired by botanical illustration lately. I found a digitized copy of Fungi and How to Know Them (1909) by E. W. Swanton on archive.org and while the info is obviously very outdated, its been interesting to see how it contrasts with the modern texts I've read.
And I've been blessed with quotes such as, "The fungi comprise a group of plants second to none in their capacity for evil." First line of the preface. cx
But what I've been most captivated by are the gorgeous plates by a miss M. K. Spittal. I just had to try this style for myself. I know nothing about inking techniques but I'm definitely gonna be looking into it because this was so much fun!

Introduction
Hello! this is just a quick about-me post to get people introduced to me and my practice. This is quite a long post, so if you don't want to read all of it, it'll be broken up into a few distinct sections of basic info, my practice (witchcraft), my practice (religion), and my hobbies/interests. If you have any other questions, feel free to send an ask or leave it in the comments. I'm doing my best to format this, so if you have any advice for formatting, please leave that in the comments too :)
Basic info:
You can call me Rook or Cloud
Any pronouns, but i especially prefer they/them and it/its
I'm a minor, so proceed with some caution, and dni if you're uncomfy with that
Genderqueer (possibly genderfluid? idk lmao)
Gray-aromantic
Asexual
auADHD
GAD
Practicing witch (eclectic/heathen) :0
Pagan/Lokean
Writer (including some poetry)
Artist (of many kinds)
Entomology, mycology, ornithology, lepidopterology, herpetology, and botany (i really like biology if you couldn't tell)
I also sew, embroider, and crochet!
My practice (witchcraft):
I'm a witch!! Eclectic is pretty accurate for me, but I do use a lot of heathenry in my practice. I collect crystals for both spiritual purposes and the fact that they're generally pretty cool :) I tend to do mostly low-energy spells, but I do enjoy larger and more elaborate rituals and spells when I have the time and motivation. I love divination, and would absolutely love to do readings for people if anyone wants one! you can just send me an ask if you'd like. I'm most experienced with tarot cards and oracle cards, but I also use pendulums, playing cards, tasseomancy (tea leaf reading), osseomancy (bone throwing/reading, although you don't just have to use bones for this), and more! currently I'm researching spirit work, shadow work, plant spirits, and astral projection/the astral realm.
My practice (religion):
I'm a pagan!! I only work closely with Loki, so I also use the term Lokean. Loki is my patron deity, so I work very very closely with him, and I'd love to tell you guys about him! Previously I have worked with the fae, but I wasn't taking it seriously enough, and didn't know enough to really do it properly. I may start working with them again now that I've learned more about myself and my beliefs. I also may start working with Lucifer, but I need to keep researching him.
My hobbies/interests:
As mentioned above, I love biology in general, but I am especially interested in entomology, mycology, ornithology, lepidopterology, herpetology, and botany. I am an amateur houseplant collector, and my most prized specimens are my (very small) Monstera albo, my (very large) pothos with 9+ inch long leaves, and my huge fiddle leaf fig! I'm currently planning on starting to pin insects, raise moths, and raise mantids. I love Dungeons and Dragons, so I'd love to geek out about that with somebody >:) I also do a lot of fiber work when I have time, specifically embroidery, sewing, and crocheting. I enjoy learning about music-theory, and compose a little bit. my favorite bands are Fall Out Boy, Ghost, Witchfinder General, Candlemass, Tom Lerher, and Chappel Roan. I also write, draw, paint, and sculpt!
Alright, that should be it! Sorry, that was definitely a lot, but thanks for reading to the end :DD See y'all later!

The Flora of AC Valhalla: Sherwood forest in ACV vs IRL - a quick diversion
So having started a new game from scratch for video game botany purposes... I'm gonna skreeee, turn in the middle of the road, and go back to my old game. Just quickly and for one (1) specific reason.
I unexpectedly found myself in Sherwood Forest on Saturday (these things happen) and want to compare ACV's Sherwood to the forest IRL. Esp what wildlife/resources did I see vs what Eivor would see? Because who doesn't find themselves thinking about video game locations when they're traveling for completely unrelated reasons?? (Someone pls tell me it's not just me...)
The first thing you notice about Sherwood Forest vs ancient woodland near me is the unusually fucking huge oaks. And I do mean *huge*. Below is the famous ~1000yo Major Oak - it could be older though, so who knows... Eivor's real-life counterparts might have seen it as a sapling.
There are hundreds of other ancient and veteran trees in Sherwood forest and surrounding areas. (Find a definition of how trees are given ancient or veteran status here, download a Woodland Trust ancient tree guide here, and read more history of the major oak with pics through time here.)
So having found myself in a forest full of fucking giant trees and thought "hmm, didn't this forest appear in ACV?" the first thing I looked for in-game was those gnarly old oak trees.
Did I find them? Oh yes.
Many of the older oaks in Sherwood had splits, hollows, and other damage to them, so I really like that the trees in-game have similar features.
From trees full of cracks...
...And twisty trees with broken branches...
...To trees that are just knobbly AF.
Another recognisable feature IRL and in-game were tinder fungi - and I bet that's a resource Eivor would have known about and used. Tinder or hoof fungi are long-lived bracket fungi that can be used to carry embers and make amadou, a form of fire-lighting tinder. A kind of leathery fabric can also be made from these fungi, but by all accounts it takes quite some processing of the amadou.
Most of the trees I saw fungi on were birch, but there are plenty of giant twisting birches in both real and fictional Sherwood. I wrote about how Eivor might know and use silver birch here.
Sadly however, I did not find any cool ruined towers with skeletons and lootables. You can't have everything I guess.
It will probably surprise no-one that this isn't the only forest I've been to that appears in AC Valhalla. I've been to Epping forest more often - some video game mycology here & irl vs in-game tree pics here.
Ok. I promise to stop being overly excited about trees for a least 2 days now. (Probably.)

POSS 101: Intro to Poss' Studyblr
he/him, 23, northeastern us
class of 2023 graduate (psych BA + gender studies minor)
currently applying for school psychology grad programs
working in mental healthcare
gay trans man
auDHD + mentally ill
hEDS + part-time cane user
infj, 5w4, virgo (s) scorpio (m) cancer (r)
night owl + cat dad + lowkey hermit
what to expect: life updates related to my grad school journey, advice based on how i make things work for myself or things i learn the hard way, notes on whatever subjects i’m studying at the time, resources i’ve collected, and maybe pictures of what my studying looks like (although it’s not particularly aesthetically pleasing). i might also post about independent studying, language learning, books i’m reading, etc from time to time. i’ll probably start by doing some challenges to get into the habit of posting.
why i'm here: to share my journey of applying for (and eventually going to) grad school as someone whose experience with going to school been less than fantastic in the past thanks to undiagnosed disabilities and transition struggles. i want to show what it's like to get back into the academic world after burning out and spending a year running the hell away from it, to commit to doing something you still don’t really think you’re good enough for. i’m sure it won't be pretty but it will be real, and i hope you'll come along for the ride with me and maybe feel less alone.
languages: just english right now, but i plan on learning italian (my family’s language) and ASL
academic interests: how diagnostic criteria and tests are made and used, early identification of "atypical" presentations of autism and ADHD, developing alternatives to ABA "therapy" for autistic youth, developing harm reduction and community care-based alternatives to inpatient psychiatric institutions for people in crisis, lgbtq+ mental health (especially trans mental health)
special interest: d&d/critical role/baldur's gate 3
other interests: queer/trans lit and media, (trans) manhood and masculinities, disability studies, monster studies, linguistics, mycology, religions and mythology, death care, trans HRT science, character creation, worldbuilding, conlanging, ttrpgs and board games, dice collecting, singing, crocheting, zine making

Hi there! I read your reply to the info graphic on mushrooms and I was wondering if you'd be willing to talk a little more about Paul Stamets.
I only really know him from the Fantastic Fungi movie (which is fun but does sound like one long advertisement for the guy) and don't know much else about him. I was skeptical when I heard he was self-taught, but mycology has always seemed like such a fringe field to get into (speaking as a Master's student in biology who's had like zero contact with fungi beyond mycorrhiza) that his lack of a formal education didn't sound like a deal breaker.
I did notice (with some apprehension) how he talked about all the patents he sold and thought in that moment he sounded more like Elon Musk than a scientist...
But when I google him all that comes up is praise and talk of what a revolutionary guy he is. Do you maybe have more info on him that's a bit more critical of his practices?
Ugh, yeah I can talk about him a bit more, but I am not sure I am the right person to weigh in. Should've kept my mouth shut, but I also feel like this guy gets too many passes. I hate bad science. First, let me say he is really good at what he does. He is great at finding ways to get people excited about fungi, and that is pretty invaluable when most people would rather ignore fungi or actively hate them. As you say, even folks studying biology don't learn shit about them! It's really sad! So he is doing a bit of a service to the mycological world, which is partially why I think he sometimes gets a pass. But he's an entrepreneur, which, let's face it, isn't considered a bad thing in this capitalist world of ours. He's not doing anything *wrong*, if you don't count really stretching some truths and relying on anecdotal evidence and his own experiences. I think people need to keep in mind that he is trying to sell you something with his claims. For example, mycoremidation has cool potential, but if he really cared about its potential to save the world, he would publish his research and not hide it behind patents.
To be fair, I'm not pursuing mycology out of the pure goodness of my heart or anything. I want to get paid and I want to be acknowledged for my contributions. So maybe I am not so different. But when I read his articles where he continually plugs his books and his talks and his products . . . it rubs me the wrong way as a scientist. From what I can tell, his research practices are not transparent, the info he is giving out is not peer-reviewed, and he promotes and sells products in the alternative medicine market. It bothers me that he is constantly toted as the authority on mycology when there are many other great researchers out there doing incredible work who don't get the same attention because they are busy doing actual science instead of selling their discoveries.
Also he was on the Joe Rogan Podcast so there's that.

11 and 14 for the selfship ask game 👀
-bobasthrone
hie jo!!!!! tysm for the questions, looking forward to answering these hehe! i hope you're doing well and keeping safe this season ^^
11. has an F/O inspired you to pick up a new hobby/interest/habit this year?
i'd say "gray inspired me to pick otome games back up so i could read spade alice (the new one he's in)" but that feels like cheating LOL. i also technically did my first gunpla shortly before ren Appeared to me... so while i've gotten MORE into it thanks to ren (and the thought of us doing them together), i also don't really count that. ren did get me hardcore back into art tho... like he's my oc so if i'm not making shit for him NOBODY is kjNKJSDFNKJNF. and he's making me focus a bit more on clothes than i normally would in my art AND irl (i want to look soooo cute for him~). and even though i haven't started YET, i do EVENTUALLY want to do mycology research for funsies. i know Enough about my own mycotoxin ailments, but anything beyond that is just like. what mushrooms used to grow outside my family's previous house and how RANCID they smelled lmao. i feel like learning more would get me closer to him, and i can see it as him infodumping to me! like that one post about leaf-cutter ants and fungus farms was WILD... i want to learn more shit like that!!!!
14. did you find out anything new and surprising about yourself through selfshipping this year?
honestly, i think ren has helped me explore so many parts of myself that i don't know how to list it all. dude's like... 10% stuff from the original dream, 30% original stuff, 60% stuff taken directly or remixed from my life. ;;;; the 30-40% that isn't me is KEY and clearly makes him very different and his own person, but also... love to dump traumas on OCs to work through them~~~ (as a Kinda Funny Thing, i think i hyperfixated on Just Some Guy ren as much as i did Villain Doc ren.... i think i've gone from "nobody will be as interesting as a cool fictional character" to "just give me a cute retail worker who's real niceys to me, i want to give it a try" OKJSNFKJN) i've also found out i have the capacity for WAAAAAY MORE social interaction than i thought possible. i've been isolated since 2016, becoming progressively more socially anxious, and one of my 2023 goals was just to go from "regular chatter in one twitch stream" to "regular chatter in multiple twitch streams", which would have been a huge change in itself... and yet here i am just chatting it up w people daily!!!!! it's nuts!!!! i still obvs have bad days... plus i still can't really do one-on-one dms or chat apps like discord kJNDKJFNSKDJFN i'm gonna need Actual For Real Therapy to be comfy doing that again KJSNKFJNKJDFNS... but i've met so many fucking cool people since making this blog, and i love chatting in tags and replies and asks like these!! i even made the first "move" in multiple cases! it's a small thing... but to me, it's huge. and it's improved my mood SO much (sans this month yeehaw but that isn't selfshipping's fault lol). all this to say HIEEEEEE if you're reading this you're rad af and ilu hehehe
#ty again for the aaaask ;w;#[ asks. ]#📌 [ my posts. ]#🦦 [ can't escape it. ]#🍄 [ lying on the blade of an emotion. ]#🦎 [ chasing starlight. ]#🧃 [ who is in control. ]#[ oomfies ; jo. ]

If you are reading this, then you are indeed stranded somewhere at the edge of the web. Of all wondrous places you can visit, fate led you to shelter in the inviting dark blue light of my blog... uhhh and where are my manners, let me introduce myself.
My name is Moru, and you probably found out about me by the repost of that cool cat vid made by my mutual, or by my artwork, or by my future games.
I'm an aspiring writer, gamedesigner and artist, who's into space and mushrooms (i find mycology cool and intriguing).
My favourite music is midwest emo, bedroom pop, snes-era videogame soundtrack and that one amusingly calm genre of music that just whispers "nintendo wii era".
You can also find me on newgrounds, itch.io and my website, development of which is currently frozen (html is really hard (〒﹏〒)).
I find amusing everything i reblog.
Will answer every incoming ask.
It is raining on the surface, tho, so stay inside.
And while you're here, hope you'll find my posts and reblogs awesome.
