Oakie the Acorn is the Best Mascot Ever
I don’t even go to this school I just love them. Here’s an interview they did for SUNY Mascot Madness.
Oakie - SUNY ESF
Tumblr media
Who are you, where are you originally from, and where do you do your mascot thing? I'm Oakie Acorn (they/them), proud representative of ESF and its Mighty Oaks athletic teams! I was “born” when I fell out of ESF's Robin Hood Oak which means my roots go back to the Major Oak in England's Sherwood Forest. Maybe that's why I'm so merry! While most of my mascot duties have me in Syracuse, I also pop in at our Ranger School in Wanakena and our satellite campuses in the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands.
What's a unique new thing (building, club, activity, employee, etc.) on your campus that you treasure? The newly renovated Marshall Hall is wonderful! Open since 1933, Marshall underwent a major two-year reno re-opening in 2023. We kept the classic features, such as the spiral staircase and auditorium, while updating the building to a state-of-the-art learning center with spaces tailored to the needs of today's students. The building is home to our Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, and mathematics programs. Along with great classroom and studio space, there are plenty of study nooks for students to tuck in and do work between classes or meet with friends.
If you could start your own club or major on campus, what would it be? Wow! Difficult question because ESF has so many unique clubs, activities, and majors already! That said, I'd love to start an a capella group – Oak-apella! I don't speak, but I have a song in my heart and would love to hear ESF students sing. Maybe I could do some interpretive dance while they sing.
What's your hidden talent that you haven't told anyone about yet? Anyone on campus at night might have seen me skateboarding. The other day I landed a kickflip over the gap and was pretty stoked. Sadly, no one was around to see it. Flicks or it didn't happen, right? We do have some talented campus artists who have drawn me and my board though.
What campus cheer gets you pumped up and why? (with great enthusiasm)  O-A-K-I-E!  They're our acorn can't you see?  Sprouting strong through day and night  We've got bark and we've got bite!    ESF Orientation Leaders chant this while they lead our newest acorns to convocation. I love hearing it echo off the campus buildings!
What sport would you play if you were a student-athlete? I would join the Bass Fishing team in a heartbeat! I know when you think “acorn,” you think “land-based,” but I'd love to get out on the water and drop a line or two. There's so much more to me than most people know.    I would look awesome in one of the Bass Fishing team jerseys – provided they could get me an XXXXXL.
Read any good books lately? The Climate Optimists Handbook by environmental activist Anne Therese Gennari is a great read. Her book is about empowering people to get excited about changing the narrative on climate change so we act from courage and excitement to co-create a better world. She totally gets the ESF vibe! She was our commencement speaker last May and inspired our graduates and their guests to Improve Our World!    And of course, Braiding Sweetgrass by our own Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer is always close at hand to read again and again!
Favorite pizza topping? Mushrooms. I love to top my pie with things I've foraged in the woods. Remember, you have to be very careful with mushrooms. I always take along a friend who has taken Dr. Alex Weir's mycology course to ensure I don't eat anything that could make me sick or worse!
If you were SUNY Chancellor for a day, what would you do? I would declare every day Earth Day in SUNY and plant pollinator gardens on every campus. I would also help other campuses set and reach their own Zero-Waste goals. Sustainability is a key component to helping the environment. I would then ask to be Chancellor for a couple more days to visit as many campuses as possible and see all the great things SUNY students are doing.  I don't know how Chancellor King does it all! Does he ever sleep?
How would you celebrate being named SUNY Mascot Madness Champion in 2024? The same way I celebrated in 2017 when I won the title – surrounded by the best students, faculty, and staff ever! We had a party that the whole campus attended. My friend, Victor E. Knight from SUNY Geneseo, was gracious enough to come and present me with the trophy and join the festivities. I think it would be great to host Wolfie on campus this year.

Mascot Madness definitely involved some madness
For those who have been following Oakie the Acorn, round 3 of the college mascot tournament poll they’re in ended with their opponent being withdrawn by the school, Stony Brook, because students cast “excessive votes,” probably using bots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Oakie has moved on in the competition, and we will continue with our art posts for Oakie. (If you vote for Oakie and like this post or otherwise let us know, we will post art)
Semifinals are today (12pm) until Friday (3pm).
We’d appreciate support for our acorn!
Please play fair, but it is explicitly in the rules that you can vote every 12 hours during a round!

hello friends that still follow me for some reason
Most of you are probably from wattblr so I thought it best to inform you that for now this is now an Oakie the acorn propaganda page. Oakie is a confirmed non binary skateboarding acorn mascot, (very gay) and they are in the semi finals of a competition of a bunch of NY colleges! They are very very very goofy!!
For all my wattblr folk: vote in the spirit of fucked up stupid little mascots. For Reese or something. (something something soul of the school pride and the name the heart and the flame, except this is how I feel about a walking acorn)
for the general public vote Oakie if you love gay people

Hi Lola ☺️ You’ll be pleased to know the giant wine I showed you was a Pinot Grigio! Though I must admit…. I do like anything oaky (sorry).
I’d eat acorns if I could be bothered to leach the tannins. 🩷
WELL, WELL, WELL CIG! IF ONLY THE PLANETS WANTED TO TELL US MORE CLEARLY THAT WE SHOULD BE HAVING A LARGE GLASS OF WINE TOGETHER!
(one day it must be done. let me smother you with my friendship. please don't eat acorns) 💜💜💜💜

I crouch in a sandy creek bed, watching the skimmer bugs make ripples on a surface that reflects the dapple of light through the trees. The dark shapes of decaying pine needles are hardly scrutable in the dark water, no more than two feet deep at most, but as inky as unending space.
The cardinals cheep, the blue jays bay, and the finches chatter over one another. The damp sediment is cool under my palms, which dig into the banks, and the water cleans away what few grains clung to my palms when I life them away. An old, fallen loblolly tree bridges the crests of the divet that forms the creek. The scent of its sickly-sweet decay makes a home in my mind, passively floating to the back of it to be forgotten. The water smells clean, but oaky; a brew of white oak acorns and sweet gum fruits and yaupon berries.
A little girl is next to me. She’s in thrifted clothes and treadless tennis shoes, and dampens her knees beside me while kneeling facing the water. Her hair is brown and curly, frizzed by the branches that snagged it on her walk to get here—it wasn’t far.
I look over her shoulder. She’s watching little catfish dart up from the depths of the creek to touch the surface, and then dive back to where they can’t be seen.
“Do you see them? I’ve seen them a few times.” She does not look at me when she speaks.
“Are you me?”
“Yeah,” she replies. “You put me here. I’m you.”
“Guess you’re right,” I reply. I must have made that decision somewhere along the way. It wasn’t a conscious one, nevertheless. Still, I’m curious. “Do you represent something?”
She twists her body and hops up on her feet, now crouching just like I am. It feels strange, so I sit down. “Not yet. Maybe I will. This is your exercise.”
“Honestly, I can’t think of anything for you to represent. Sorry.” The girl shrugs. “It’s still good to see you. I love you.”
She doesn’t reply in kind. Instead, she offers out the bait trap she made out of a plastic bottle—one with the neck of the bottle cut off and inverted, so the fish can swim in, but not back out. “Wanna catch some catfish with me?”
Yeah, I do.

Historia: A Comprehensive Guide to Hyrule's Oldest Places- The Faron Region
Note that anything in italics was originally written by @two-turtleducks
Tumblr media
In the wilds of the Faron region, there are strange ruins with carvings depicting boars, owls, and dragons. These ruins are associated with various sets of armor and ceremonial garb that seemed to belong to a tribal society of warriors who were adept at various types of magic. The most puzzling thing about these ruins and clothing is that they are some of the oldest in all of Hyrule, and for all appearances, the people these belonged to are no longer in existence, as if they quietly fizzled out. There are no known descendants of this mysterious "Zonai Tribe", and none of the peoples of Hyrule can lay claim to their presumed territories (even if they technically belong to the Kingdom of Hyrule). Archaeologists to this day know next to nothing about this civilization, and it is one of the most debated areas in all of Hyrulean academia.
---
Fylysyti here! Now, I'm not entirely sure what is in the Faron region either, but the amazing ruins and everything included are SOOOOO mysterious! I heard from a little bird that there is some super structure deep within the bowels of Lake Floria... I wonder if anyone is planning to investigate it?
Word on the Wind
Thermals rest your wings, birds of a feather! Word on the Wind is that the priests and priestesses of various divine dedications have been watching the skies with shock and awe! No confirmation yet on what exactly they are watching for, but we will keep our ears to the air and update you when possible!
Oakie's Navel
Note that I, Fylysyti, found a really weird acorn with strange markings on it! I have absolutely zero clue what is written on it, but I decided that I would share it anyway! No clue what made me think of the name "Oakie's Navel" though...

💭 + trees
001. I'm going to count the Great Deku Tree as a part of this because he is legally a tree.
Oaki canonically has his bedroom in the GDT in Tears of the Kingdom, so you can actually visit him in-game!! Inside the massive space is his one bed, but he invites his siblings and friends to decorate the space. Oaki is super fond of Silent Princess's and all sorts of nuts and acorns to litter the area. Sometimes rotten food gets in there too, but GDT is pretty quick to remind him to clean up!
He does allow visitors also. His absolute favorite thing to do is to host sleepovers and tell scary stories! But not too late... he doesn't want to be up past his bedtime.
