12 Days of Christmas: Studyblr Edition !
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Why? I had my last final this week and now I'm back into my antsy holiday mode, when I am more motivated than I ever manage to be during the semester. I also like making commitments I can't keep. ♡
Who? I'm curating this challenge for myself, but if it sparks inspiration for anyone else in the #studyblr, feel free to use some or all of my ideas here to make your own posts!
When? December 13 until December 24! We ain't studying on Christmas. [Feel free to use this challenge outside of the Christmas season, though!]
How? Participate by making posts and tagging me (@juneability) or using the tag #12dopmas.
What? See below:
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
On the first day of the challenge, set up your daily goals (3-10 goals, as a general parameter). Be specific, and make sure they're accessible within your life circumstances.
(ex.) This year, every day, I will:
Wake up before 8am, go to bed before 11pm.
Read for at least 30min.
Read & take notes on one (entire) academic paper.
Practice an instrument for at least 30min.
Clean/organize a space (different each day).
In a post, report on your goal progress and share on some areas you'd like to improve. Then [optional], share something you're grateful for, and/or answer one of these 15 prompts:
Learning:
What is something you'd love to learn if you had the time?
What is something you'd love to learn if you had the resources?
What is something you'd love to learn if you had the motivation?
What is your favourite thing about a subject you're well-versed in?
Ideals:
What does your ideal lifestyle look like? What can you do today to match it a little more?
What is the ideal study space for you? What can you do today to match it a little more?
What are the pros of your note-taking method? What are the cons?
Recommendations:
What's a song, album, or playlist that's been keeping you going lately?
What show, book, or movie would you recommend to your younger self? (Something you wish you'd seen sooner!)
What is your favourite snack? What is your favourite meal?
Miscellaneous
What are three adjectives that are meaningful to you?
Do you collect anything (e.g., stickers, rocks, pretty pens, vinyls, movies, etc.)? Share what + why!
What is one of your greatest virtues as a person or student? Don't be shy; know thyself!
Who is somebody you look up to (e.g., a family member, friend, teacher, celebrity, artist, etc.)?
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Happy studying! (+ Merry Christmas)

12dopmas: Day 4
241216: Monday! Semi-productive morning (I baked! I never bake!) and work (piano lessons) in the evening.
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Woke up before 8, stayed up past 11pm finishing a book (I finished at 0:00 ON THE DOT. BTS would be proud). 🕛
(Obviously) read for far more than 30 mins. Touch by Courtney Maum... not for me. 2/5 stars. Characters were incredible, plot was aimless, and message was wishy-washy. 📕
Read a paper on space travel that was perhaps a bit too far outside of my specialty, but was interesting nonetheless:
Carbajales-Dale, M., & Murphy, T. W. (2023). The environmental and moral implications of human space travel. Science of The Total Environment, 856(2), 159222. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.159222
Practiced before bed, ironing out hard bits in some Animenz arrangements (this guy loves arpeggios). 🎹
Didn't tidy/clean any area in particular, though I did other chores. 🍞
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Something I'm grateful for: chocolate!!! We can just buy that stuff and eat it??? All the way up here? I can't bash globalization for this one. Thank u globalization 🙇

#12dopmas : Day 2
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
241214: Saturday; a day to rest after a long, busy semester! I started replaying Citizen Sleeper today, this game is beautifully done. So excited for the sequel!
Woke up a bit past 8am.
Read for 30mins. Also hit the library and got 3 books out!
Read an interesting paper on biases in pain judgements:
Schäfer, G., Prkachin, K. M., Kaseweter, K. A., & Williams, A. C. (2016). Health care providers' judgments in chronic pain: the influence of gender and trustworthiness. Pain, 157(8), 1618–1625. https://doi.org/10.1097/j.pain.0000000000000536
Pulled out some old songs to play now that my gig is over! ≥30min.
Cleaned the rest of the floor in my room.
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Something I'm grateful for: a warm house and warm blankets and warm drinks! And a refrigerator. That's pretty cool too.
Prompt: What are three adjectives that are meaningful to you?
"Resolute" - I would like to be the type of person who knows what they want. I don't think I'm quite there yet, and that's okay—I need to see more of the world before I can make up my mind on things
"Mellifluous" - how I'm tryna be when I practice music. Just a great word, and one I associated with my boyfriend!
"Resilient" - being adaptable to change is one of the most important values a person can have, and I'm ... working on it! Not something that happens overnight, but I would like to be described in this way someday

#12dopmas : Day 1
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
241312: Today was incredibly busy, I had about two hours to myself in the morning and then I was gone until late in the night. My family helped me move my piano, and then we went for lunch. After that I taught piano until the evening and then met friends for drinks to celebrate the end of the semester! 🥂
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Goal progress:
I woke up nice and early, but went to bed after 11 because I had to finish some laundry. 🧺
I read for a little less than 30 mins—there just wasn't time, but I fit some in on the bus rides throughout the day. I've started re-reading The Mysterious Benedict Society and The Perilous Jouney, a childhood favourite. 🚸
I read a paper I've been meaning to get to awhile, since it keeps coming up in more recent papers:
Prkachin, K. M., & Solomon, P. E. (2008). The structure, reliability and validity of pain expression: Evidence from patients with shoulder pain. Pain, 139(2), 267–274. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pain.2008.04.010
I played piano & sang for at least 30 mins. I haven't sung for awhile, I think I strained my voice a bit lol 🎤
I took care of the mess of bags and laundry in front of my bed! I still need to deal with another mess on my room's floor... I'll get to it eventually. 🛏️
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Something I'm grateful for: Friends and mojitos! Yum! (To the latter) 🍹
Prompt: What show, book, or movie would you recommend to your younger self? (Something you wish you'd seen sooner!)
I wish I read Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake YEARS earlier. It was genuinely life-changing. The only way you'll understand how a book about mycology could be life-changing is by reading it yourself. Hence, I should have picked it up in high school. 🍄

#12dopmas : Day 0
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Setting up goals for the next 12 days!
Wake up before 8am, go to bed before 11pm.
Read for at least 30min.
Read & take notes on one (entire) academic paper.
Practice an instrument for at least 30min.
Clean/organize a space (different each day).
Current progress:
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Last night I went to bed at *gulp* 7pm. And then I almost got up at 2am before I thought better of it! Technically this aligns with my goal, but I'd like to be a little less insane about it. 😴
I started reading "On Writing (and Writers)" today, which is a compilation of C.S. Lewis advice on writing. I'm excited to read more, but I realized that you can't exactly binge read advice without diminishment of its value. 👤
I haven't read an academic paper today. I will organize a list I want to read over the next 12 days, and maybe I'll reblog with a "reference" list. 📃
Haven't practiced an instrument yet. I won't be able to play my piano until Friday, because I have to transport it back from the event space I played at yesterday. But let's just say that performing for two hours pretty much covers my back in case I don't get around to guitar, lol 🎹
I plan to organize things from my school backpack, since I will be needing them in a different capacity for the next month. 🎒
Something I'm grateful for:
💿 The CD player my boyfriend gave me for our 1 year anniversary !!!!!! I'm listening to Pourchasser L'Aubre by Caroline Savoie with headphones right now... and ascending to the heavens. Finally I get to live out my physical media dreams. + I'm probably going to buy another CD today :)

12dopmas: Day 5
241217: Tuesday. Winter's getting to me.
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Woke up around 8 (slept in to make up for night before), and went to bed around 11.
Read for about 30 mins, starting To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang. Excited to see where this goes!
Read a nice and straightforward study on relative self-evaluation and self-enhancement bias:
Brown, J. D. (1986). Evaluation of self and others: Self-enhancement bias in social judgements. Social Cognition, 4(4), 353-376. https://doi.org/10.1521/soco.1986.4.4.353
Practiced piano for almost 30 mins.
Did not clean/tidy a particular area.
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Something I'm grateful for: a working shower and soap! I love to feel clean and fresh!

12dopmas: Day 3
241215: Sunday — made a huge to-do list and got most of it checked off! Christmas tree is now up, and I did a little painting of "Midnight" from Doctor Who in my sketchbook.
Tumblr media
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Woke up before 8, went to bed before 11. 💤
Read for more than 30 mins. Currently reading Touch by Courtney Maum. I must say, I don't really like it all that much. Maybe it gets better in the second half? 📖
Read a paper by Michael Barnett on the post-cold war evolution of humanitarianism:
Barnett, M. (2005). Humanitarianism transformed. Perspectives on Politics, 3(4), 723-740. http://doi.org/10.1017/S1537592705050401
Practiced piano—mostly Animenz arrangements. I want to work on his Swordland arrangement since I always gave up on it before, but now I think I can figure it out. ⚔️
Cleaned parts of the bathroom. 🧽
· · ─ ·𖥸· ─ · ·
Something I'm grateful for: all the Christmas decorations my boyfriend's family brought to us so that we could get the house all festive!! 🎄
Prompt: What is something you’d love to learn if you had the resources?
I love coffee, and so naturally, I would love to learn how to make all the fancy coffees in the world. I don't think I'll ever be a barista since I have shaky hands and mediocre-at-best customer service skills, but I want to know how to use the equipment. Right now all I've got is a kettle, a french press, and an electric coffee grinder. ☕

I am gonna drop the 12dopmas challenge and pick it up again after Christmas. Yesterday I completely forgot about it until late and barely did anything for it and today I had about an hour free to complete my goals and didn't know I'd be occupied for the rest of the night. So I just know I'll keep being busy like this coming up to Christmas now and won't push myself to this challenge rn
