I’m gonna say something controversial

I do not give a flying fuck what you ship. I am not the thought police. I am not trying to repress media, I am not trying to censor anyone by not wanting self-or-otherwise-proclaimed proshippers to interact with me.

What I want is for people so entrenched in ship discourse to stop telling me as a victim I am wrong to be upset and uncomfortable when people bring ships that make me uncomfortable into my space.

Listen. People can do as they will with their free time regarding fictional characters—they are simply objects after all, writers are the people who give them life, they do not think for themselves. But at the same time, I do not like to be reminded of the shit that happened to me.

I am not proship. I am not antiship or whatever either. I do not take part in this discourse. I just do not like being told I am wrong because of my experiences making me averse to certain things, and for whatever reason, some people really like to try to lay on the whole “you should be okay with this actually” narrative extremely thick.

No. I should not. You do not have the right to tell me how to curate my online experience, you do not have the right to remove my autonomy in that way. The moment you start preaching to me about how it’s fine because they’re fictional as an excuse to keep talking at me about something that viscerally upsets me because it reminds me of my own past? You are the villain here.

I did not buy nor I want to play that wizard game. But let me tell you what happened to me today.

I have been helping with Turkey communication efforts to reestablish essential networks so people can coordinate better. Im part of a computer science volunteers team and we have known each other since the pandemic (we got together to help with BLM) This time we have worked non stop, taking turns only to eat and sleep naps till we finally got the main channels we were working on to hold themselves up. We were *tired*, but someone in our team had been trying to keep the morale up speaking about that game, because they have some experience in game dev so while we waited they would give their predictions and expectations about xyz mechanic. Thats not my area but it was refreshing to hear something that was not about the people dying.

When we finally made it, we said our goodbyes and went directly to sleep. I just woke up and saw the tag of the game on tumblr. I was expecting to read about people enjoying stupid animations or maybe the music, but what I have gathered is people sending each other to hell.

Look, fuck JKR, but playing a game made by hundreds of artists and programmers that made at least a decent job for what Im gathering, is not synonym with being a horrible person. And I say this because is more complicated than that, and is dangerous to simplify things so much. Is dangerous to use the same rhetoric of the person you go against. And is so dam exhausting to see people wasting energy in pitch and forks when real problems are right there.

Just be kind. Humans are stupid and like little stupid games. Millionaires are despicable but difficult to take down. We cant control most things, but at least we don’t have to make other people day difficult.

My apologies for writing this. I needed to get it out and your blog seemed more peaceful than most.

I don’t see how stating my opinion on this matter makes my blog less ‘peaceful’. I’m just making my stance on this clear. My tumblr isn’t made to cater to a specific fandom or aesthetic. I like, reblog, and post what I want. I understand wanting people to chill out about it. But a lot of people that are saying that are missing the point of the discourse.

Look, I love gaming. It’s my escape. I literally just finished playing Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and am about to play Subnautica Below Zero. Gaming is great.

However people from both the trans and Jewish communities have explicitly asked people not to condone and play this game, because it’s success ultimately just continues to hurt them in the long run.

If your want to ignore them and play it then go ahead! I’m not gonna stop you or condemn you for it. You don’t have to justify to me why people want to play it. If you wanna ignore the voices of other communities for the sake of your own enjoyment, then fine.

But there are hundreds if not thousands of other video games out there that you can play that don’t have this kind history of routinely hating on other communities.

Besides reviews for the game are pretty mid anyways. I’d rather go play Horizon 2 again.

BnHA Chapter 305: Worst Intervention Ever

Previously on BnHA: Shinomori, whose name took me an entire week to memorize, was all, “nice to meet you Deku, I’m ten feet tall, do you want to know how I died?” and without waiting for an answer explained that he kicked it from old age at forty thanks to good ol’ OFA. Deku was all “wait a minute, then how come All Might, who’s fifty-five and is definitely dyeing his gray hair, is still alive?” First and Shino were all, “we really have no fucking clue but we think it’s cuz he’s quirkless, JUST LIKE YOU!” So basically, since quirkless people don’t exactly grow on trees these days, Deku is probably going to be the last user of OFA. The chapter ended with Nana being all, “psst, Deku, about my grandson. Uh, can you kill him?” which is sure to lead to a very interesting conversation this week.

Today on BnHA: Nana And The Gang are all “so, Deku, how can we put this delicately. The thing is, we’re pretty sure that AFO really fucked my grandson up, so on the off chance you can’t save him, how would you feel about, you know... [throat slitting gesture].” Deku is all “idk you guys, I kinda feel like he’s really just a traumatized child at heart and he’s in a lot of pain and stuff and so I should try to help him.” The Vestiges are all “BUT WHAT IF YOU CAN’T” and Deku is all “BUT I WANT TO TRY, DAMMIT” and the Vestiges are all “well when you put it that way, we, uh, were just testing you, so congrats, you passed!” The chapter ends with First being all, “ANYWAY SO WHY DON’T YOU TWO SHY BOYS STANDING OVER THERE IN THE SHADOWS COME SAY HELLO” before we CUT AWAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK, goddammit.

We try to keep positive stuff in the main tags (in general tags), occasionally there will be stuff about Twitter or negativity about them but generally, as far as I've seen, they aren't heavy, or they are but they're pretty solid arguments that aren't like, loud, yelling, or gives off that vibe, I suppose.

God. No. You know what? Fuck this. Holy shit.

I was watching a stream yesterday and a joke started in the chat that the streamer clearly did not like. The streamer tried to play it off as “haha okay but no” and push on, but it was clear to anyone that the joke was not wanted. The chat persisted. The streamer went “okay really. But no,” and it was very clear they were trying to not sound harsh, and to still keep the positive vibes going.

Then the streamer started ignoring those comments outright, and even saying things like “hopefully if I ignore it it will stop.” It is very clear they are uncomfortable and don’t want it.

So in comes a wave of superchats about the joke, including one that blamed the streamer for bringing this on themselves. I do not know what standards the streamer had set re: interaction with superchats, but they were apparently such that they needed to be read aloud. But each one came with either an attempt to affably lay the joke the rest, or yet another request for the joke to stop.

Nothing made this stop. The streamer did pretty much everything possible to indicate their dislike of what was going on short of pulling the plug or getting fully serious. Instead, their chat mods got on board as well.

I as a fellow fan should not have to sit there and go “What kind of superchat can I send to drown out the others.” (I was also not the only one who did this, nor even remotely the first. This isn’t a “Teabender was a hero” story. If anything, I’m glad and relieved there were multiple people trying to strongarm this bullshit out of existence, because it probably took that many.) It eventually worked, one person tried to bring the joke back, but it (fortunately) died on the vine.

Now, we have spent exactly four and sixty-two years having a mandatory Internet-wide seminar on consent. We have begun disassembling our behavior, and the behavior of our society as a whole, to learn how to not fuck people up. We have had hashtags, and we have had trials, and we have had discourse, and yesterday in the Year of Our Lord 2021 I watched dozens of people not only ignore a person saying “no” repeatedly, but PAYING MONEY IN ORDER TO CONTINUE IGNORING THE “NO.”

WHAT IN GOD’S NAME.

Like, I was going to be calm about this. Yesterday I was like “It’s cool, sleep on it, give this a nice even-handed addressing tomorrow when you’ve calmed down,” but it’s tomorrow and I haven’t calmed down, because I STILL watched a bunch of people ignore a person saying NO, LIVE ON CAMERA, and I’m NOT gonna calm down about that shit.

I have said pithy little things about streamers being human, but I’m done being pithy and cute. STOP doing this to streamers. STOP treating them like fictional characters. STOP treating them as though they only exist when they’re on camera. STOP using other human beings to fulfill your emotional needs at the expense of theirs.

Once again, despite knowing when exactly the livestream would happen, I decided to pull a Ge0rgeN0tF0und and slept through the latest lore event... though in my defense, the stream started at 5am in my time zone. Since the official vod still isn’t uploaded, I’m watching an unofficial one, so thank you to my friend Emily from Discord for uploading it.

As usual, a few things before we begin:

I basically don’t know what happens during the livestream, even though I woke up at 8am or so. Sure, I’ve seen a few minor spoilers through browsing Reddit and Tumblr (I’ve refused to interact with major blogs I follow to avoid them actively), but overall, I know next to nothing.

No one’s updated TV Tropes yet, so thank God I don’t have that as a source of spoilers. I might update them after watching the vod, though.

This whole post is within the context of the SMP, so /rp and /dsmp applies to everything under the cut.

Started to post this rant on the other post but the conversation was involving so many people going back and forth that I didn’t feel my additions were necessary there; everything I’d want to say was said already, and better. 

But, of course, I still have feelings, so I’m just gonna dump them here instead.

Fuck whoever responds to people’s apprehension and negativity with anger and mockery. 

Fuck people who think that the Loki fandom clearly has to be a hivemind, bc anyone who is deviating from the “omg bEsT mOsT AcCuRaTe LoKi dEpIctIoN EVAR i am SO EXCITE” reaction is being shunned, made fun of, vague-posted about, and just generally being treated as if they should not speak AMONG THEMSELVES about their disappointment in what we’ve seen so far of the show. 

Fuck people who submit anonymous ask after anonymous ask to popular Tom Hiddleston ask blogs, obsessing over what people are disappointed in. 

Fuck people who make posts like “omg guess what the whiners are complaining about today!!” and spread them around. (How do you even know what’s being whined about today? Stop fucking seeking it out.) 

Here’s the thing: I am/was excited. I am taking the trailers with a grain of salt. I am examining what Tom has to say about it and considering the sheer volume of content we’re about to get and remaining (cautiously) optimistic. I have never hated the idea of this tv show. 

And for the record, I have never hated Ragnarok, either. I’ve seen it more times than I can count bc there was a time when it was my comfort movie. It was funny and fresh. It got me into Loki enough to actively join and engage in fandom. But even when enjoying it as a comfort movie, it felt much more like crack fanfiction than anything that went in tandem - canonically, characteristically, or tonally - with the first two Thor movies. 

As I familiarized myself more and more with the entire franchise, it was more and more clear to me that there were two sets of characters being portrayed, and that I vastly preferred to engage with the Thor 1/TDW set of characters even while enjoying the Ragnarok set. 

And talking about that on tumblr was interesting and engaging to me, bc that’s how my brain works. I like to dissect things. I like to analyze fiction. I like to be critical. And I enjoyed reading meta and engaging with people who had similar thoughts. 

Until it became clear that this is a fandom that makes you feel like you’re not allowed to be critical of anything, lest you be labeled an “anti” and a debbie downer and a misery queen. Ragnarok was kinda ruined for me in general bc I felt like I was no longer allowed to enjoy it the way I wanted to bc I didn’t also consider it even a good movie, let alone the best Thor movie ever. 

And this is happening with the show now, too. Like I said, I was excited and I was optimistic but the closer we get to the premiere, the more deflated I feel. And it’s because this fucking fandom is ruining it for me. Specifically, the majority of this fandom who is so offended by a small number of outliers who do not care for the new way Loki is being portrayed (and yes, it IS new, and does not mesh with what we saw before Ragnarok, and you can protest that but you are wrong) that they can’t ever shut up about it. 

Yes, I can curate my fandom experience and I can block tags and whatnot but even after doing that, I still keep encountering it. And, also, I feel like I shouldn’t have to block/blacklist 75% of the fandom just so that I can feel secure in engaging with it without worrying about being attacked or made fun of. 

I don’t care if you’re excited about the show. I’m happy for you! If you’re excited and engaging with that excitement in positive ways without shitting on anyone else, good for you. Thank you. 

But it seems like a whole fucking bunch of you aren’t content to just be excited. You’ve gotta stir up discourse shit too, bc - I don’t know, you’re bored? It makes you feel good? It feeds your superiority complex? 

Here’s the facts: You are the ones who are making it miserable for everyone  - you who are doing all of the above things and continuing to make tumblr feel very hostile to everyone who isn’t wetting their pants in excitement about this fresh new Loki stuff. 

Just stop it. Maybe do some self-reflection and ask yourself why it bothers you so much that other people don’t feel the way you do, or ask yourself why you need to stir up drama where there otherwise shouldn’t be any, and whether or not you’ll be happy when the outliers have been driven from the fandom completely and all that’s left is your hivemind of toxic positivity.

on the topic of nsfw content in the atla fandom. tumblr actually mentions that if a blog is flagged as nsfw than the user must over 18 if they want to look at it. so the entire discourse is forgetting to mention that if things are tagged properly than it is literally fine to post whatever u want.

it’s so weird because like, there’s very little nsfw content that isn’t text-based on tumblr right now--there hasn’t been since the porn purge, except the porn bots who still abound because tumblr can’t actually do anything right, but that’s neither here nor there--and even if there were, i’m a whole adult, and i almost never just ‘stumble’ onto NSFW/M/E material, either in fics or art, in this fandom unless i specifically go looking for it.

I don’t have safesearch enabled, and I googled every major shipname from atla--zutara, kataang, taang, sukka (this one i had to search ‘sukka avatar’ because apparently sukka is a food dish), mailee, tyzula, zukka--and didn’t find a single piece of nsfw art. not a single one. i probably could have if i spent hours digging through the images, or if i specifically added something nsfw to the search terms, but im sorry, little kids just googling ships and characters from atla aren’t gonna accidentally stumble on porn. Especially since one would hope that if adults live in a house with little kids who they allow to use the internet unsupervised, they’d have safesearch turned on. That’s what it’s there for!

(”But kids could figure out how to turn it off-” yeah, and when I was 13 I lied about my age and wrote a ton of harry potter smut with people who thought i was 17/18. That was on me, not them, and if you had to stretch it then it’d be on my parents for not monitoring what I did online. But I was a hell of a lot more scarred by A Child Called It than writing about teenagers at magic school who snuck off to the Forbidden Forest to have sex. [Don’t ask me why, I have no idea, but the Forbidden Forest was THE PLACE for characters to be having sex on all the sites I was on back then.])

So what’s really going on is a handful of 16 and 17-year-olds (who are more than old enough to moderate their online experiences) and young twenty-somethings who are enabling them (because they’re Literal Babies and Must Be Protected i guess, despite them being nearly adults and capable of using the tools given to them to moderate the content they consume and are exposed to), who are enraged that this content even exists. They are hiding behind ‘what if little kids see it’ like it’s some kind of shield, but the fact is, little kids are not going to just ‘stumble’ onto this content.

Little kids are not going to google ‘atla’ and find porn, even if their parents are irresponsible and don’t have safesearch enabled and aren’t monitoring their young child’s internet usage. (And if these children are so young that they couldn’t handle exposure to explicit material, and also couldn’t be expected to understand how to avoid it, they should not be online unsupervised. Period. It isn’t the job of anyone online to protect them--that job is up to their parents. Take it up with the people who are actually supposed to be raising and protecting these kids. Don’t expect strangers online to do the protecting for you.) Little kids are not going to accidentally find explicit material and be irreparably scarred for life. It just isn’t going to happen.

Little kids are also extremely unlike to be visiting ao3, and if they are, then they are in violation of the tos since ao3 is age-restricted to 13-year-olds and above. Anyone who is 13 and allowed online with no or minimal supervision can handle accidentally seeing or reading about sex, and they are certainly old enough to read and understand what the ratings on fics mean. If they click on an M or E fic and then click through the ‘this material is intended for adults’ warning, and then, shocker of shockers, find adult material behind the warning, then they should either deal with it or blame themselves or clicking on something they knew would contain material they weren’t prepared to handle.

The same goes for anything on twitter that is flagged as sensitive and hidden accordingly. If kids on twitter click past that sensitivity warning and then see a penis, that’s on them! They chose to ignore the warning and click to view the content anyway! They are at that point responsible for what they have just been exposed to, and it isn’t going to do lasting harm unless something is very wrong in their lives, and at that point the fault is with the adults who were supposed to raise and protect them, not the content they saw online.

Anyway, this weird purity crusade in the atla fandom is just... well, weird, lmfao. Like, yeah, it’s a show that’s aimed at children, and most of the children who were old enough to watch and love it when it began (I turned 14 like a month after the show premiered, though I didn’t actually watch it until I was an adult but I knew of it) are adults now! Many of them still love it, and want to engage with the material as adults, or imagine the characters as adults (and I’ve seen someone literally say that if you write nsfw material with the characters aged up you’re ‘picturing actual children’ and like???? no that’s not how it works shut the fuck up) doing adult things. There are many people just barely getting into the show/fandom as adults who feel similarly! There are people who want to explore their own feelings re: teenage sexuality with these characters at their canon ages, too, and that’s just fine! The vast majority of the YA genre wouldn’t exist if not for adults exploring teenage sexuality via teenage characters.

But the point is, the vast majority of this content is clearly marked. Children who are old enough to be on tumblr or ao3 or twitter (all of which have 13 as the bare minimum age allowed for registered users) are also old enough to use the tools at their disposal on all of these sites to avoid content which makes them uncomfortable. If they aren’t old enough for that, then their parents need to be keeping a closer eye on what they do online. I started answering on the post but Tumblr ate it twice so here's hoping third time is the charm. Also, this turned into an essay, bc I really care for you and wanted to get it all in.

So, as to the drabble "flopping"; I feel you, it always hurts when that happens. But there's a few factors to consider, which is to say stuff outside of your control going on. The first being: Tumblr's not the best place for posting fic. It used to be pretty good, but those days are past; ironically the tagging system improving contributed to that. Before people had to reblog or like posts to find/be able to find later. Now they can actually search for it. The second is naturally that the nsfw ban scared a lot of writers off and people stopped feeling this place for fic so much (not to mention the rise of discourse also did that).

The next is simply, as ever, timing. Despite it being an AO3 reason, I've found it holds true for Tumblr too, when I link my fic. Late in the day on humpday just means less traffic overall.

And finally, and this is the painful bit: it's a small fandom. Especially when you compare it to 911 which I think you likely are. I've been suffering from the same myself lately, I've posted what feels like some personal best fic............for teeny fandoms and niche pairings and ten people. Add to that that the show is both off season rn, and, the real kicker, is not a weekly airer. You've noticed how the weekly episode of 911 then has a corresponding uptick of making and consuming of fanworks. Simply put, there's new content so there's new material to work with and people are going "huh that was a cliffhanger, let's soothe it with fic". OBX is netflix and thus generally has a big burst of creation around it dropping then a longish tail and then little radio noise until then. The Witcher is a good comparison, but has two factors going for it: related media (books and video games) and big name stars. OBX is, basically, a lil kayak doing its best. But there's simply not as many people who consume fanwork for it.

Now love, and writing, is never wasted! Every word is a gift you give yourself and your skills. But I wanted to give you a sort of "cold logic" of why that reaction might be what it is, COMPLETELY separate from your actual work or the quality of it you may perceive.

Which was a very long winded way of saying: our reward based ape brains love the numbers. But the numbers come from lots of places. What matters, and what we can't quantify, is how much people loved it. The people creeping on your page and rereading it for the sixth time right now. The ones that messages it to friends. The ones that will think about it, out of the blue for ages. Maybe years. There's no counter for that. Keep creating <3

This might be the most helpful thing anyone could’ve said to me. It’s hard for me to not equate “success” or interaction to my self worth and my skill and I needed like logical factual reasons why it may not be doing well. I knew all along it’s a tiny fandom and I’ve seen with gifsets that interaction isn’t great rn even if you have 8634346323 followers, but idk, I just. I feel like a little kid bringing macaroni art to her mom and hoping she loves it. I was so proud of putting words on paper and like, was immediately like why is no one here to see it. And historically I’m awful to myself anyway, a thing thats exacerbated by like past trauma and shit so. And you’re right, I was kind of I guess thinking 911 numbers in my head and that’s not logical either.

I love this fandom and I haven’t been so inspired by a fandom in a long time so I’m gonna keep writing, if for no reason than I just want to. But I’d be lying if I told you the lack of interaction isn’t gonna be hard for me every single time too. Because that’s just how my shitty brain works I live with one finger on the self destruct button at all times.

I have a feeling your ask box and I are going to be familiar. You might be hot-taked out after that killer Satomi discourse. But whenever you’ve got it in you, I’d sure love to hear what you think about Kira and her Jeff-deemed-absolutely-necessary departure.

Oh, definitely. And I do love content, so...

Kira Yukimura was done so dirty by the writers and Jeffrey “I’m not racist I’ll prove it by arguing to poc calling me out for it on twitter” Davis. Her treatment was racist, tokenizing, and it wasn’t even high-brow racism. It was sloppy and lazy. If you’re gonna write all your characters of color off the show, commit to it. She went to the desert like 5 times before she stayed. Cowards.

Kira was only meant to be on the show for the Nogitsune storyline in 3b. However, fans liked her so much that, as with Theo in season 6, she was brought back for more episodes. The difference is that Cody Christian is white-passing and male and Arden Cho is not. Female characters don’t exist on Teen Wolf without a relationship to a male character. Hayden existed for Liam. Tracy existed for Theo. Melissa existed for Scott and Argent. Allison existed for Scott. Lydia, the female character with the most screentime of all of them, spent a lot of her time existing in relationship to Jackson, Stiles, Parrish (shudder), and other male main characters. Women on the show were reduced to love interests and mothers more often than not, and Kira was the same.

I loved her character. I loved her arc. I loved Arden Cho, who in real life is as sweet and kind as her character. I enjoyed her parents, both Noshiko, who’s surprisingly funny and a total badass, and Ken, who’s the most wholesome man in the universe. The only straight man we stan. I love him.

Anyways, Kira was getting a fun arc outside of being Scott’s girlfriend, with her parents and her powers and all, and then wham, white-passing boy shows up and no more main character status for Kira. Guess there wasn’t enough room to keep the only interesting plot line of all the ones happening in s5. Personally, I would have chosen Kira over the Marrish garbage fire of underage relationships, but that’s just me.

Then. The Skinwalkers. I could write a whole essay about them, but this is a Kira post, so I’ll limit it to her. At least Luther got sent to the moon for a reason. Kira got sent to the desert for “rEaSoNs”. There was no indication that her power was out of control, but every indication it wasn’t. She was growing and learning. Then, suddenly, she was “too powerful” so she had to go to the desert and disappear for a few episodes and then go back and forth for a while before they wrapped up sending Theo to the upside down or wherever he went and she could finally go... hang out with the people who we were told could help her control her power but who only threw spears at her and gave her a season finale ex machina. Then back to the desert with you!

You can tell something was going on backstage in her treatment. Arden Cho wasn’t informed she was being cut, she had to be told by fans. Her departure was carried out as swiftly as possible, and not for any real reason. Kira would have been tremendously helpful against the hunters and in a lot of later scenes, against the Ghost Riders (and let me remind everyone that KIRA WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD LYDIA ABOUT THE WILD HUNT), against pretty much anything. Immune to electrocution? Don’t help with the hunters who love electrocuting people. Sloppy writing through and through.

And what’s more is that Kira was cut just in time for the Scalia thing, which was so fucking rushed oh my GOD nothing has ever been less natural- this is a Kira post, calm down capsicle. Anyways, Kira got replaced as Scott’s love interest and not much else by a white girl, no hate on Malia or Shelley but much on the writers. I loved Malia and Kira’s friendship, and if anyone should have gotten with Malia, it should have been Kira. (The first time I saw Malia I wondered if we were getting another ambiguously brown character, actually, but no, just Georgian and well-tanned. But I bet not all my followers knew Tracy was played by a Chinese and Cherokee actor. Or that Nolan was played by a Mexican and Caxcan actor. Or that Theo was played by a Penobscot Native actor. The list goes on of white-passing POC who got to stay marginally longer than Black or brown characters.) The “Scott ends up with a white girl he has no chemistry with” threw me for many loops, especially after I was surprised to find myself liking Scira, even though I’m usually bored by straight relationships because of their one-sided focus and nonexistent chemistry. Kira got to be a character outside of Scott, and I liked their romance better for it, and then desert for a thousand years!

TLDR on the canon end of things is that Kira and Arden were done dirty by a group of powerful white men who wanted to tell a cishet white story.

Now, on the fandom end of things, I’m stepping into the real hot water. It’s safe to say that Kira’s story was sloppy and Arden didn’t deserve that ending, but it’s less safe to say that this fandom doesn’t treat her that well either. Here’s the most popular x Scott ships on Ao3, under the Teen Wolf tag with no other filters.

Scott and Allison. Scott and Stiles. Scott and Isaac. Then Scott and Kira, in dead last. Scott and Malia don’t even make the top ships list, probably because of how rushed and sloppy it was, but I digress.

People love Scott and Allison a lot, and I get that. I liked her too. I was also sad when she died. But, unlike a lot of sentiment I see in this fandom, I don’t think she should have been brought back to fight the beast in season 5 and get back with Scott. Not only do I think bringing characters back to life without very good reason and explanation (which they wouldn’t have, come on) cheapens their death, and that bringing characters back to life is weak storytelling in general, but let’s recall that Scira is still a thing in season 5. They’re still madly in love when Kira leaves. Allison should not have come back and love-triangled so Kira could be written off for a different white girl or so the massive amount of young white girls in the fandom who love Allison would be angry at Kira for breaking up their OTP. That would have been the one thing that could have made season 5 worse. (Well, they could have made Marrish a thing or killed Mason, but Jeff Davis thought about it and a shiver went down his spine because the ghost of Christmas future hears my name in its nightmares.)

Even if people aren’t “bring Allison back” campers, they largely ignore Kira’s entire existence. People who post gifsets and posts about Allison or Lydia don’t give anywhere near the same amount of attention to Kira. I see more Malia posts, actually. And while all of them had more runtime than Kira, none of them paired with Scott quite as perfectly, or had such strong independent storylines. Lydia almost did, but it kept petering out and she kept going back to main plot only. I see lots of appreciation posts for Allison and Lydia and Malia and the men, obviously, but NOTHING for Kira or Arden Cho. We all know what happened backstage because we read the same post in 2016 or whenever and then we all stopped talking about it.

Even the racism in this fandom skips Kira. Scott antis, I’m looking (controversially) at you. I’m glad Kira isn’t the subject of a bunch of obvious racism (as much as “bring Allison back!” makes it subtle), but not because she’s a forgotten side character. Kira made the main credit sequence! She has a sword! What else could you all POSSIBLY want?

And here’s where I burn at the stake: Kira was written off her own damn “look Fun Japanese mythology” storyline half the time so it could center around Stiles. A white boy. There were numerous issues with the mythology before that — “Oni” means demon, not “firefly samurai ninja”, and it refers to a similar mythology as the western “fae”, a large collection of creatures benevolent, malevolent, and in between, with different traits and origins. Kitsunes are meant to be red or white, not gold, and they’re foxes, not cats, animation team. “Nogitsune” refers to the malevolent class of “low” Kitsune, or “wild” Kitsune, who didn’t align themselves with the goddess Inari and do divine and pious work. There are many of them and the most they really do is harass people at shrines, not murder indiscriminately for funsies. They’re only malevolent in that they like doing bad deeds, not that they’re serial killers. And they’re not one of the usual 13 low Kitsune, two of which are bad of their own accord! (Spirit and Air. Google it!) They are meant to be dealt with by Inari-aligned high Kitsune, not your average tricky fox. Among other things.

So Stiles. Outside of the Kira storyline, he’s used in a lot of fandom discourse about racism and sexism. And queerbaiting. Y’all love a scrawny white boy. Anyways, Stiles gets possessed by the Nogitsune (that’s NOT how that works but okay Jeffrey) and suddenly s3 is about him. Kira’s not evil, now let’s look at Stiles being tired and messy and killing people. Dylan #1 did a great job playing that part, no hate on him, but the fact that a white boy became the main character in a Japanese (or Korean, if you’re Jeff, same thing) girl’s storyline is. Hmm. How do you call it? Blatant racism. And erasure. Which is racism. YIKES, Jeff. There is so much wrong with Stiles being the Nogitsune and controlling the Oni and his whole story (and oh my god the other guy who got possessed was also a white boy instead of a Japanese character played by the same actress Jesus fucking Christ). I’m not going into that, because that’s its own essay.

Anyways, because of how much this fandom loves Stiles, it’s easy to ignore how Kira and Japanese characters were treated. People project onto Stiles with glee. He’s white. He’s awkward. He’s (supposedly) not super attractive. (Yikes.) He’s ditzy and bouncy and all that fun stuff, but he also always saves the day. He got written off for most of 6b and he still saved the stupid day. And hey, dark!Stiles (let’s not get into calling him dark instead of Nogitsune that’s just too much wine we’d have to crack open to say it) is a fun trope and people like posting and creating about him. Except that he’s the white boy who took Kira’s storyline. Her independent story about Kitsune and the like was all given over to him, not just by the show, but by the fandom. So now every post about Kitsune is a Stiles post, even if it started with Kira. And because it’s Stiles, and this fandom loves him, and is easily offended by people leaning too hard on the glass house around them and him, Kira gets forgotten and swept aside. Everyone would rather talk about Stiles. Who is incapable of bad. Or cultural appropriation. But if you attack him you’re being ableist because he has ADHD. This is why I relate to Nolan for anxiety feels instead.

TLDR on the fandom end, y’all don’t treat Kira better than the show did. I see a few posts here and there from some dedicated users — typically the same people posting about Boyd, Deaton, Morrell, yeah that’s it I’m the only one posting about Kali. (Un-fun fact: Kali was not played by an Indian actor, but by a half-Black actor. Jeff Davis, when called out on twitter, said “wow ok idiots we tried to find an Indian actress but it was hard actually SUPER hard so shut up and stop telling me how to write MY show”, which is paraphrasing with intent to make fun, but exactly what he said.) Y’all who know about Arden and Kira should diversify your blogs to include more POC, especially ones where the actor AND character were rudely sidelined for vague white people reasons. Post gifs of Kira along with Allison, Lydia, and Malia. Post ship stuff of Scira too. Post about kitsunes, the origin story of the Nogitsune, when you post about the white boy who became the main character of that arc. Call the show out. Call the fandom out. Stop making every bit and piece of her story about Czechoslovakia White Boy. Demand Kira in any future runs of the show, if season 7 or whatever does happen. Include her in your fanfictions, in your headcanons, in your art. You don’t have to love her, but you have to remember that she’s as there as any of the white characters are.

made this because i’ve been thinking a lot about this dumb discourse, and then i realized “oh hey they kinda remind me of truscum a lil bit” because they always pull the “you’re ruining our community” card

and i feel like there’s gonna be someone who says something to me along the lines of “are you trying to say that (x issue shown above) isn’t important? you’re biphobic/transphobic!” so uh let me let you in on a couple things (i would’ve put this next part under a cut but tumblr has a history of fucking up the text under a cut whenever i add a “read more” so i’m not doing that again because i don’t trust it, you can just scroll if you don’t care to read this next part):

1) i am bi and trans, and yes i know that people of a minority group can be bigoted against their own minority but psst cmere come a little closer, just a little closer- THAT’S NOT WHAT I’M DOING. how someone chooses to label themselves or wants others to refer to them is not my business and it’s not any of yours either. i don’t care if you don’t like how pan people define pansexuality based on their own experiences with their sexuality. just go somewhere else if you don’t like it. if it’s an irl space (which it probably isn’t because most of this discourse largely happens in online spaces and online spaces only) then express this to the other person in a civil manner, and if they’re an ass just try to distance yourself from them. or don’t do any of that because who am i to tell you what to do?

2) there are several issues going on in— or outside of (but still centered around)— the lgbtq+ community that are FAR more important than useless infighting that backtracks our progress as a community. i am not denying that biphobia exists and is a big issue, because it is. but you have to keep in mind that far more people in this community are struggling and feel unwelcome here because of things like racism, transphobia (against both binary trans people and people who don’t identify with the binary completely, if at all), ableism, and classism, and those are just a few examples. to prioritize issues that— to be quite frank with you, as a bi person— can wait a little bit and don’t need to be addressed as desperately as those things is something that i find selfish, especially since i have a sneaking suspicion that most people who engage in this discourse are white. your feelings and needs matter but there are people dying because of their physical and mental ability, races, sexualities, gender-nonconformity, and gender identities and you’re arguing with someone over why their definition of pansexuality is biphobic. to me that is selfish and a symbol of your privilege. i as an asian person (who was assigned female at birth and have female/feminine sex characteristics) am susceptible to things that i don’t even want to say out loud because of how repulsive and triggering they are simply because of my race and my build. this isn’t a matter of “i’m more oppressed than you”, it’s a matter of how willing you are to use your privilege for something other than engaging in useless discourse just because you can since you don’t have bigger things to worry about. you’re allowed to be upset because of the biphobia or transphobia you’ve experienced in the past, but i can’t help but feel like taking those emotions out on/attributing those things to people whose experiences differ from (or even are the same as but are defined differently from) yours is immature and simply a waste of time.

Look yes sometimes tumblr fucks up the tags but it generally puts pro content in the anti tag. Even if it's a tumblr glitch, seeing as you tagged it with anti it's a sign you're not there to fight, they could've simply warn you about the tags. But they probably saw it on the Sansa tag, took an issue with it, and instead of ignoring the post/blocking you like we do with a lot of the posts on the Sansa tag, they decided to lecture you about their ship. And they're lying lying. How are they gonna tell us it's a future ship when all their favorite "shippy" moments, metas, arts, fics are based on the scenes when Sansa was 11/12? How are they shipping them only when they're both adults when they gleefully refer to Sansa's nightmare of being sexually assaulted as a wet dream? Who are they trying to decieve here? Their book!sansan tags are exactly what it says, book moments of the hound berating, condescending, assaulting Sansa that they find it oh so romantic, erotic. Do they think their very public metas, arts, arguments that's been entrenched in this fandom for 2 decades are so secret that we don't know what we talk about when we criticize the ship? Like I have some toxic villain x hero ships but I don't pretend they aren't the villain or go around bothering people who are weirded out by the ship. But their whole community is built on pretending the hound is not a child murderer, a pedophile, a violent brute who enjoys terrorizing the child he's attracted to, so when people call him what he is, even without the ship discourse, they take it as a personal attack, how dare you disturb their delusion, they are offended so now they have to attack and deflect to keep the delusion going.

As far as I’m aware doesn’t every time you tag something as anti because I rarely see posts tagged anti Sansa in the Sansa tag (but I have it blacklisted so I don’t have to read it) for example but it does happen occasionally (more so with pro posts in anti tags) since tumblr is shitty with it’s tagging system. I just remembered, A few years ago my anti post (a particularly harsh one) ended up in the tag and two fans just messaged me to say it was in their tag and asked me to change it to anti x instead of anti xx, they were perfectly civil and I apologised to them both and changed my tags and continued using the new tag. That’s all you need to do when you can see someone hasn’t used your tag purposely, unless you purposely want to start shit I guess. The block button also exists as they were pointing out to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Unless they only ship them in AU and write AU posts all the scenes they analyse, create art for (with Sansa looking 20) and romanticise are canon scenes when Sansa is a child even if the scenes weren’t abusive and they had a healthy dynamic - romanticising them would be wrong and make some people uncomfortable.

Guys, we're spot 15 on the Fandometrics top 20 ships list, four spots down from where we were last week. This list represents Fair Game’s longevity because it shows that we’re a big, strong fandom who aren’t going to back down any time soon. But if we keep this lack of momentum up, we’ll be off the list next week for sure. We've got to keep tagging our stuff and reblogs as “Fair Game” and keep making content! I know I’ve made a lot of posts about this recently, but this is honestly important.

I’m gonna put this bluntly, guys: Our ship is going to live and die on this list. Is it a weird and kind of silly metric? Yes, but it’s a metric, all the same, one that’s prominent, and more likely than anything else published on this website, listened to.

You wanna know what RT will see if our name stops appearing here? 

It’ll show them we’re running out of gas, and we’re getting tired, even if it’s not true. It’ll show them that all they have to do is wait us out, and we’ll be gone soon enough, just like a passing rain storm. It’ll show them that this controversy is one to be ignored.

And because of that, our pain will continue to be denied, and God only knows what kind of message that will send to other companies about the kinds of baiting they can get away with.

But we’re better than that. 

We need to show them they’re wrong, and that list is our means of showing them that.

It shows them that we’re real. It shows them that we’re relentless. It shows them that how we feel is going to remain their problem until something is done to address the baiting we endured for months and the horrible payoff we received for our patience and loyalty.

Favourite Pedro character: I feel like this one is VERY obvious from the username - my one and only Maxwell Lord of course. He was the first of Pedro’s characters I ever saw and he’s what made me fall in love with him in the first place so it’s natural that I’m gonna be biased also he’s hot as hell maxwell pls ruin me

Favourite Pedro movie/show: Narcos! The story is super thrilling and even if there’s been discourse on it lately it’s become one of my favourite shows. I love Javi’s dynamic with Steve so much. 

What got you into Pedro or one of his characters? Well it all started on December 27th when I went to see Wonder Woman 1984 for the first time. Now, I don’t care for Star Wars much so I hadn’t seen The Mandalorian at the time (although when I did end up watching it I loved it) so I hadn’t seen any of Pedro’s roles - I knew of him but I never saw him in action so to speak. I tell you, the second I saw Max Lord on screen my first thought was “holy fuck, he’s hot”. Then my second thought was “I’m gonna fall in love with you aren’t I”. And sure enough, towards the end of the movie when that scene happened pretty much confirmed it, thus kicking off my obsession creepy crush. 

Favourite thing about Pedro or one of his characters: C’mon, you can’t make me choose just one thing. If I really had to narrow it down, it’s his smile. When he smiles, it’s so precious and adorable and in turn makes me feel a little bit brighter. I’ve quoted that one lyric from YBWM to describe his smile and honestly? It 100% fits - a smile that could light up this whole town.

Ajgjjdka you're right ik that, I saw someone on like one of the blogs say something like "haha the idiot antis dont understand that they're leading more people to our community." Similar things have happened on other parts of tumblr fandom discourse that I've witnessed over the years. That's why, y'all might not know it, but I have a list of rules for myself regarding discourse that I'd like to post ab, while not wanting it to spread too far. It basically emulates some rules I saw someone older than me post back when I was into steven universe, but here are some of them (since I don't wanna disclose them all for... reasons):

1. Don't post in gen/main tags ab discourse if the thing you're talking about isn't already blowing up/trending. With this specific situation, this means not posting in the mcyt tags after those first couple of days when mcytblr was first catching wind of this.

2. Don't mention ppl by name, especially if they are minors, past those first few general posts. Otherwise, if what you're talking about can be discussed in general terms/is an ethical debate that can be applied beyond the fandom - which truting and outing can be - do not involve the specific people. This, for me, also means not calling out the specific blogs either because those are minors, too.

3. Don't make block lists. I never, ever make block lists. They are too often used as, like, a cache to find info for people who want to join in doing whatever fuck shit I'm trying to block. I think I said this already a couple weeks ago, but I wanted to reiterate it. Also, I don't like disseminating block lists beyond the first couple of days of discourse blowing up.

4. Don't mention specific users by name. Pretty obvious why.

5. If something is going in the tags after those first few days, don't tag with whatever the discourse is widely-known as, and follow the above rules, too, so it can be perceived as a general PSA/ramble.

Basically mate, I'm trying really hard to strike the balance between talking about what I want to talk about on my blog, talking about general issues that I think are important to convince my peers in this fandom are wrong, and not simply recruiting more people to fucked parts of the fandom. If the tide changes and there is proven evidence that I have directly contributed to that part of the fandom increases, or if there's a spike in its members regardless, I'll stop.

But for now, I'll keep talking about the various reasons it's fucked to 1) overanalyze creators' behavior, 2) violate creators' privacy, 3) demand private information from creators, 4) potentially out queer creators, 5) dehumanize creators and use them solely for your entertainment, 6) pressure creators in psychologically damaging ways that you should understand, especially if you yourself are queer, and 7) break creators' boundaries while using the excuse that they are unlikely to come in contact with your boundary-breaking
