the worst parent poll made me realize just how many ppl in the fandom are willing to jump straight into abuse apologia. bc on one hand you have ppl dumbing down crow's abuse to "him just being mean" and on the other end you have ppl saying that curlfeather didnt abuse frostpaw because she sacrificed herself and frost + her siblings love her so she couldnt possibly be an abuser. truly mindboggling stuff take these serious topics away from the fandom asap.

Part of me feels like it's because many in this fandom have a feeling that if a character's actions are abusive, it means you're "not allowed" to like them. Like there's an impulse where if you liked a character, it MUST mean they weren't THAT bad, because you'd personally never like "an abuser."

As if it reflects poorly on your own morality, as a person, that you connected with An Abuser. Understood them, even. Even if it was just a character.

If it's immoral to Like Abusive Characters, of course your reaction is going to end up being abuse apologia. To enjoy something isn't logical, it's emotional, so you will get defensive about it when questioned. When you do, it's not going to be based on logic because you didn't reason yourself into that position in the first place. It's an attack on you as a person.

I feel like that's often the root of abuse apologia in this fandom, and sometimes the world at large; "If I admit that this character/person IS abusive, it means I was doing something bad by liking them, so I have to prove to everyone else that they weren't or it means I'm bad too."

And to that I say... That's a BAD impulse! Grow up and admit you resonated with a character that did a bad thing! If that's an uncomfortable thought, sit with it!

Sometimes abusers are likeable! They usually DO think they're justified in their actions, or doing it for "a good reason," or were just too preoccupied to care. MOST of the time, people who commit abusive actions are also hurt or traumatized in some way. You might even empathize with them. None of this means their actions have to be excused or downplayed.

"Abusers" aren't a type of goddamn yokai, they're people just like you and me. You don't help victims of abuse by putting the people who hurt us in an "untouchable" category.

In fact, all it does is make you less likely to recognize your own controlling behavior. You're capable of abuse. People you love are capable of it, too. People who love YOU can still hurt you.

In spite of how often people regurgitate "It's Ok To Like A Character As Long As You're Critical Of Their Actions," every day it is proven to me further and further that no one who says it actually understands what that means.

All that said; I think it's no contest which one's a worse parent, imo.

They both mistreated their children, but Curlfeather did it through manipulation without verbal or physical abuse. She politically groomed her into a position of power so that she could use her as a pawn. It can be argued if this counts as child abuse-- but it's firmly still under the broad category childhood maltreatment, which is damaging.

(though anon I'm with you 100% at seeing RED when "but she sacrificed herself" is used as an excuse. Curlfeather's death does NOT CHANGE what she did to Frostpaw in life. I think it's a valid point to bring up when comparing her to another terrible parent for judgement purposes, such as in the context of this poll, but I really hate the implication that redemption deaths "make up" for maltreatment.)

Crowfeather, meanwhile, is textually responsible for putting Breezepaw through verbal AND physical abuse, as well as child neglect. His motivations include embarrassment from a hurt ego, revenge on his ex, and being sad because of a dead girlfriend. This abuse drives Breezepelt towards radicalization in the Dark Forest.

You could argue Curlfeather is a worse person for Reedwhisker's murder, but as a parent? It's not even a question to me. Crowfeather's one of the worst dads in WC.

#Recently I've been reading a book on verbal abuse by Patricia Evans #And something I really appreciate about it is the way that it explains the way that abusive people *think*#The way that victim and abuser typically have a WILDLY different view of the world #The most important thing about this book though it how much it stresses that *these impulses are still human*#They play these power games to keep a sense of control in their relationship. It feels GOOD to hurt and dominate their partner.#And even when it describes the worst of humanity and the behaviors that escalate into physical violence--#--the book keeps in mind that anyone could change. But not everyone will. And it is NOT your responsibility as a victim to change them.#Reading it is painful but also very validating.#I wish I'd heard of it several years ago when I was first leaving that relationship lmao #but. How do you reconcile it when one of the most traumatic experiences of your life was an act of love in their eyes?#When it *wasn't* part of a game to hurt you but something they legitimately did in the thought they were protecting you.#You don't even get the satisfaction of having it just be nice and simple. it's the annual infodumping post!! yahoo!! have ink when he was slightly younger. also concept for how he actually hears the creators (with a little radio)

#ink didn't come out the fully fledged ink he is today out of that puddle (see my ink's backstory posts part 1 and 2 somewhere on my blog)#he was very different back then! and also didn't know how to dress #he wasn't that talkative cuz he was still getting used to having a voice. and didn't bother to express emotions much either #though he was definitively happier. he was just too happy to have left that void.#so the radio. he hears the creators with it. he only hears bits and pieces. and the creators can't hear him. they might be not even talking #-to him. choose a radio because in my multiverse. creators are very associated with stuff like computers and electronics and such #they're like. computer angels. at least in the eyes of the characters. gives them a sort of eldritch feel.#even with how much ink is connected to them. I never felt like his feelings and relationship to them were ever truly explored.#there's a lot more going on than just simple respect or love. and in my version of things ink doesn't have a direct line of communication-#-with them. so he has to assume a lot of things about them.#and he assumes by projecting really hard on them.#but even if he can't help but see himself in them. he also can't help but question them and fear them and go against them sometimes.#they are beings way above his comprehension. he doesn't even know what they are.#and if his wishes goes against theirs. he would choose his own.#ink sans #sans au #utmv #undertale au #art #myart

You know I love these different Waffle Cookies that the creators made that one time, and how they each interpreted the waffle differently

The first one makes the waffle more like a shield or something? This one isn’t entirely clear, but it led to summoner/cleric

The second one seems to interpret the waffle as like a straw hat, and thus a bug catcher

The third one I’m told they made the connection between the waffle and chainmail, which led to them being some sort of monster tamer? I don’t know

And then this fourth one, the waffle got interpreted like a knit pattern, and so the Cookie’s a knitter

I love how each of these make a connection between the ingredient and something else, and then from there they can make a whole character from it

God I wish that were me. And also that I didn’t overthink things so much

#it seems so easy #but then again these are professionals and this is literally their job #but I wish I could make those seemingly simple connections between food and real life #I think I overthink way too much when it comes to making OCs and so I end up in these confusing messes #when I could have had a simpler solution #ah well #I also just wanted to show you these cool designs #they’re never going to be official they were just a design challenge thing #but still appreciate them #cookie run #character design #waffle

I'd like to propose a new rule for fandom:

If you have the time and energy to complain that there are not enough people writing the types of fanfiction that you want to see because they are daring to enjoy themselves by writing other things that you personally don't like to read, then you also have the time and energy to sit down at your keyboard and write it yourself and are, by default, volunteering yourself to do so.

"Everybody is too obsessed with [popular ship]! Nobody's writing for my favorite ship!"

Then write it yourself.

"Everybody's writing SHIP and SMUT fics! I want something else!"

Then write it yourself.

"Why isn't anyone writing super in-depth 200 chapter fics with fully realized plots and character development?!"

Because that takes time and energy that not everyone is willing to invest in a hobby they're partaking in for fun. Oh yeah, and WRITE IT YOURSELF if you want it so damn bad.

There's nothing wrong with feeling frustrated that you can't find what you're looking for because you have specific taste, or perhaps your taste is different from that of the majority of the fandom. This is fine and understandable and I completely relate! But once you start complaining that the only reason people won't write what you want them to is because they're "lazy", "unoriginal", or any other insult you might think is clever, then what you're doing is demanding other people put down what they're doing to serve YOU.

Fanworks are shared with you, not made for you. Unless commissioned, fanfiction is not a commercial product and it is not held to any standards of excellence. It has an inherent right to be as polished or as messy, as defined or as vague, as the author pleases. All works of fiction about fictional characters have an innate right to exist. Your ideas are no different, but it is on you to bring those ideas into existence.

Your options are to find the fics you like, commission an author (under the table of course), or write it yourself. These things are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. NOBODY ELSE'S.

actually making my tags from my last post into their own post. writers who struggle with grammar, spelling, typos, errors etc i love you. writers who struggle with rereading their stuff thoroughly no matter how much they try, who don't always have access to other people to help them read i love you. whilst reading through and checking for these things is good practice i really believe that the weight of it should not be put wholly on the writer's shoulders. especially writers who are neurodivergent, disabled, have any condition that can impede their reading + comprehension, are overworked and overtired, are not writing in their native language, list goes on....because grammar mistakes/language mistakes/typos have nothing to do with your abilities as a creative. this is where editors should be uplifting writers, helping them, not scrutinising them for something they cannot always control

#and in case anyone is going to say it...like i said in my tags i get that it can be frustrating #if it feels like a piece has NOT been reread or checked for these things at all #but even then its like...do you know the writers context? their background?#does the story itself still hold up strong creatively?#im just saying some leniency and grace goes far and esp in the short story/litmag scene i think #an editor who is considerate and inclusive should not use those things against a piece's worth #for me its like....1) the word spelling and grammar check is really confusing to work with sometimes #and also just. straight up does not work sometimes #and 2) no matter how much i reread and check for spelling and grammar i will forget a word. i will misuse a word. i will forget things #a bitch is forgetful! a bitch struggles with rereading their pieces and i do what i can to help that #but i need help and grace from the editors who wish to work with me!#i remember one time i wrote vacancy as vanacy in an excerpt in a writing update #literally passed me by and i was so humiliated?? nobody even pointed it out #but i assumed people were going to think of me less that i would make a simple mistake #its just...v hard and daunting being open with your writing sometimes lol lets all be kind to each other

yknow i love transmasc/tboy dirk always and forever but the way some ppl treat transmascness vs transfemmeness in HS's narrative........kinda sucks. like the whole thing about how being transfeminine is a literal transient experience and lets the character in question (any character) truly escape the oppression of HS's narrative-as-a-character which is patriarchal and toxic (lord english, hussie-the-character to an extent. i guess. idk ive seen a lotta ppl lump SI-hussie in w/ this), which is great and does hold weight as an analytical lens esp with how hussie irl is nonbinary. but where does this leave transmasc characters. why are we treating (headcanoned) transfemme HS characters like this and then tbh gleefully dooming (headcanoned) transmasc characters to eternal narrative suffering brought by LE and then mocking them for being ''gross tboys'' full of ''icky testorerone'' so its their fault theyre in this perpetual torment really? because they ''''chose to be a man''''? dunno man its starting to feel bad. especially since some bnf's who are really into this fan theory do actually kinda treat the general idea of transmasculinity like somthing to hold with tongs at arms length away from them. as if its alien or infectous or something and then get really mad when equally dysphoric transmascs do the same with feminity. why are we dooming dirk strider to eternal toxic-masculine suffering and what does that say about how we treat real life transmasc folks both in and outside of the fandom

Guys....guys...about the Kamados...

Also spoilers!

Just finished reading this damn sobfest manga and a question here,specifically about the dad,

as in are we sure Tanjuro,the Kamado patriarch,didn't die because he overtaxed himself with the Sun Breathing?

We sure he didn't die because of the demon slayer mark or something?

Like it's never specified what age he was when he died but he seemed young if ill and the Kamado's wouldn't know that they are essentially performing superhuman and really taxing feats,yeah?

Like Tanjiro specified his father had the same damn mark he himself is developing and Hinokami Kagura is essentially just Sun Breathing for dummies so...?

I mean the official reason for the death of the Kamado patriarch is basically an unspecified illness and I am totally ready to accept that too!

Don't get me wrong this story is tear jerking enough without the implications of the blessing of inhuman strength also basically being a curse for everyone involved.

But yeah this thought won't leave me alone and since I am sick right now and possibly delirious if this post makes no sense I apologize.

But really,realistically Kamado's wouldn't know what the damn breathing is and anyone else would have just called a random wasting sickness.

At the same time,they did live on a mountain so maybe the dad just caught pneumonia or something?

But like he was wrestling bears at one point and dancing the Hinokami for hours apparently,and Tanjiro describes that as actual debilitating pain and a stamina and strength sapping effort of only pulling one of the forms,imagine dancing it consecutively for hours?

Man no wonder Tanjiro just seems to be so good at this too!

He had the most difficult form of breathing as a yearly tradition!

No but really this damn breathing form and breathing in general was dropping people left and right and most of the Hashiras got their mark in the end but imagine being a normal man and pulling this superhuman bullshit as a yearly tradition that lasts hours?

Damn the entire Kamado family is something else.

It also gives credence to that whole adage about no hero ever had a happy life but thankfully we had the power of friendship on our side.

In other words Kamado's are crazy but that's nothing new.

On the side note,apparently the realest and smartest person here is evidently Tengen.

Man came there,saw,conquered and dipped.

No but really how pissed of would you be if you basically killed this world's version of basically Satan and then the very thing that gave you the strength to do it,kills you?

It's probably nothing and I hope it was just some random illness or something but jeez the coincidence and implications are not giving me any joy.

Goofy Magpie here to ask about your art process! Do you have any tips on how you do your sketching and/or rendering process? I hope this isn’t bothering you or anything but I really like your art and want to know how to do stuff like it ya know cause it’s cool and amazing

Also what art program do you use?

Well, hello! It is pretty hard to answer, just because I sometimes change the way that I do things, but I'll try my best to explain!

Everything is under the cut!!

Firstly, I use PaintToolSai2 :D

I try not to think a lot about line art. Most of the time, I do a very rough sketch from the basic forms and start making the character over it, like this

I have no idea how this circle just became this line art without any sketches; it just happens

Sometimes it helps to do an overly-detailed sketch, like the skull with eyeballs, to make a good form of eyes

I highly recommend not overthink sketches and line art. If you think that something is wrong, leave your art for some time (20 mins is enough for me) and then look at it again (or send it to your friend and ask what is off)

I like to add a pack of short lines on the clothes beside the foldings, it can fill in the empty space

It is really helpful to mirror you work at some point. Please, if you see a mistake when you flip canvas, correct it, even if you will have to change everything in your art. I was scared of it at first, but then it started to come in handy

For the clothes PLEASE USE REFERENCES, they are very helpful

I always try to make lines not straight, but curvy. This can add some flow to clothes or show that human bodies are not flat figures

Then I do basic colours (With the background to pick colours correctly!!!!)

My colour palette mostly is not in the same range of colours (Like yellow - orange - red), which might become a problem if you don't know colour theory (I definitely do not know it).

And then I do shading with the same colour as base one on multiply layer and lighting with colours lighter than base on screen or shine layer (And I do not like that part, because most of the time I'm messing things up, but if it looks okay, it's fine)

I also sometimes colour the line art. Most of the time I choose colour more saturated and darker than the base ones, but there are still cases where contrasting lines are better!!!!

I do not like render at all, but of course I really recommend you to do it only because rendering does this:

Render is really only picking colours, mixing them and then doing line with darkest one, it is not my strong side (There is a channel on Youtube called Bluebiscuits, there are a lot of helpful advises for this ^ type of art)

Also I think that for rendering is useful to look at other artists works! They can have some techniques that can make your work prettier (I personally had no idea about textures on the art works before one artist and now it helps me do these finishing touches sometimes that are necessary)

I think that this post is not that mush useful, just because I use the same techniques as the rest of the people, these advises are pretty common, but they saved me lots of nerves when I started this drawing-every-day thing

I do not do something very unique or extraordinary with my arts and style :P Just have fun and do whatever you want and remember: If it looks cool, it works

Google how to make peace with the fact that you will always be vaguely to extremely uncomfortable (depending on the day) with your body and how others perceive it until the day you die and nothing you do will ever change that

#I almost wish I was much more masc leaning than I am #so the answer would just simply be ‘go on t’#I keep seeing so many posts that are like hrt is good! this is your sign to go on hrt if you’ve ever wanted to!#GOD I wish I were that simple #(those aren’t bad posts that’s not the point they’re just not applicable to me and seeing the sentiment makes me sad and a bit frustrated)#(cuz for me it’s not that easy)#like are there some things T would do to my body that I would like?#yes absolutely. I would LOVE a deeper voice and fat redistribution #but like. that’s it #I would not want it to do anything else #in fact that idea of anything else and potentially ‘passing’ as a man makes me VISCERALLY uncomfortable #I do not want to be a man and I do not want ppl to perceive me as a man #but the same is true for being a woman #I do not like a lot of feminine traits but I do not want to strictly trade them for masculine ones #UNFORTINATELY you cannot pick and choose the affects of hrt #there is no way to ‘look androgynous’ (which is what I want)#(yes ik you can use shapewear and makeup and contour and that can do SOME)#(but it’s A LOT of work and effort I don’t have time or energy to do every day)#(and there’s still some things about my body I wouldn’t be able to alter doing stuff like that)#and it’s like sure I could go on T. but I’d still have this problem just the opposite direction #and it. sucks #it sucks so hard knowing there’s literally no conceivable way I will ever just have a body #that correlates to how I feel gender wise and will get people to ‘gender me correctly’#just based on how I look #and it’s something I’ve been thinking about recently a lot and it’s making me FHDJDKKSSKKSKS in a bad way #I know it’s cuz it’s pride month and I follow A LOT of trans ppl #who are posting trans pride and hrt and surgery info and stuff #(and obviously these are all very good things as I said)#it’s just. because of my particular situation they make me feel… bad #because I won’t ever have an option to be comfortable and happy with how I look lol
