I just saw an ad for a data analysis textbook 'for the girlies.' Can we just. Can we just not. We can use analogies to understand complex topics without making it just for girls. But I'm so fucking tired of 'girl math' and all this shit that's basically saying that girls struggle with difficult ideas and need them put in shiny wrapping to understand. And I see my friends and people irl talking about this with full faith so often now, and I don't get it. How can you look at this rebranding of such old and dangerous approaches to gender and not be at least a little horrified?

Elain and the Kingslayer Title

Elain Archeron doesn't want to accept the title of "Kingslayer" because then it would require her to accept her role in fate.

Because I am sure we will find out fate played a role in why she was able to save Nesta and Cassian from the King of Hybern before they were killed.

Why she was able to be there in the right place and right time (out of nowhere) and summon the strength to kill him despite her repulsion for violence.

It was Lucien who said, "I heard you made the killing blow."

She rebuffs him. Just as she rebuffs the bond.

Elain hides behind her properness and her humble etiquette to deny the claim and the title and the role she played in ultimately changing the tides of war. Nesta has accepted these things (fate and her powers), so she easily claims the title. She also has a history of belittling her sister Elain, so she isn't going to question why Elain rebuffs the claim.

If Elain accepts the title, then she must accept fate. If she accepts fate, she must accept the fact that the mating bond is her destiny.

Elain isn't ready for that. Yet. But she will be, in her own book.

All right, another question for the group: Any moments come to mind of someone surviving being stabbed by a lightsaber somewhere nonlethal, like the person wielding it missed their mark? (Specifically a stab wound, there’s plenty of evidence of people surviving slashes/decapitations)

Follow-up question, does that particular scene/media where it happens feel like it cheapens the severity of lightsabers in general? Does it feel unsatisfying for somebody to be able to recover from that, or is it a matter of it being frustrating because the aftereffects of the wound and the recovery time don’t feel like there are enough consequences for it to still feel like a serious injury? I.e., someone gets stabbed and is up walking around just a few days later, or the medical care they receive has them up and going again and it feels like it was barely an inconvenience? Basically, if I give it enough impact will you let me get away with it without backing out of the fic 😆

Jokes about Nesta always paint her as being prone to violence like threatening to stab people. And that's really not her in canon. She can seem standoffish and cold to people she doesn't know, but for those she does love, she will stand up for them. Nesta had never physically hurt anybody until the war. She never sought out training or using knives or even her power. Even when Hybern's ravens attacked, Feyre told her to run so she did. Her power obliterated Hybern's forces in the war which was not something she particularly controlled, but that's very different to holding a weapon in close combat. If I remember rightly, the king was the first person she chose to kill and she killed the king after he threatened Cassian, killed her father, and when Elain was nearby. She did not want to train. She did not want to be a violent person. Nesta isn't aggressive or volatile or violent.
