#i will say that spn does put forward a VERY interesting answer to “why is Grendel”

wait hold up- this is an area I'm unfamiliar with. I don't know anything about the pre/early-old-testament stuff. My area of focus is 400s-1500s a.d. Christianity, a bit earlier for Gaelic and Roman paganism but never much older than Mycenean Greece (with the exception of Egyptian pantheon, Sumerian culture/folk magic, and whatever existential gay furry angst(complimentary) the Epic of Gilgamesh is)
like for the most part I even have an opinion on this one way or another bc its totally new to me. actually blowing my mind re: irl/non-spn religion as well
all I WILL say is that while I think Chuck is The Christian God, I think there were other gods at the same time as, if not before, God. AND, since Biblical times, "The Christian God" has had such varying interpretations that its more of a "greek vs roman"/"the same god but also absolutely not the same god" situation
also, I would disagree with Chuck raising Sam & Dean to be warriors- I think this is a subject for another post, but God's/Christianity's treatment of the Descendants of Cain (specifically Grendel) is an interesting and complex subject unto itself. I would describe it less as "raising them as warriors" and more "Encouraging everything else in the world hunt them for sport, while making them just unkillable enough that they'll try to hunt everything else in return- with the goal (in spn canon- in Beowulf/folkloric canon there's no point to this afaik) of making the biggest, most fucked-up Creatures possible to eventually use as vessels/generally let loose on the world during the apocalypse"
so yknow. a lot like John did
tellll meeeee*
this is cool
this is so cool
EDIT: thought abt this for a bit- the reason I'm so attached to Chuck being "The Christian God" (not the first god ever, not the only "The Christian God" in existence now) is bc for me at least its the backbone of so many of spn's religious, queer, and social themes & metaphors (intentional or otherwise). I'm EXTREMELY interested in your take on it, but for me personally, having Chuck be anything but The Christian God takes away from a lot of what gives spn its weight in modern cultural contexts. it just kinda turns into a God Fight/kaiju-battle format w not as much relevance to irl issues.
*or just link articles/videos/scripture verses, that's cool too
@captorations ik this isnt your fandom but this conversation is WELL deep into mythology, and getting into your sphere of things. pspspspsps we're talking about Demiurges
wait fuck.
remember the pet snake that Jack had for a bit in s14-15? the one he killed so that it could "go to heaven to be with its friend"?
that snake was a metaphor for Dean. killing it was still an act of evil, even if the goal of its death was to re-unite it with its "friend".
and it was something Jack did.
implying that if Jack were God...
fuck i hate this i hate this i hate this i hate this i hate this i hate this i hate this

envesseled (1 of 3): poker
HELLO >:)
so. as you may have noticed, the last time we posted anything about envesseled (the claire-centric, claire-pov fic intended to follow jesse's fic cambion and ben's fic only human) was in 2013. did we forget about it? did we cancel it? is the verse abandoned? no, no, and no. we had a lot of stuff to rewrite to get the verse in the right place for envesseled, and then we got busy, and THEN there was a pandemic. but it was never very far from our minds, and now it is FINALLY time for this to be the next thing we post.
most of the fans of this verse have been with us for a very long time. for being so patient, and so supportive, we decided to post not one, not two, but THREE scenes from the in-progress envesseled, for everyone to enjoy, but especially for the people who were readers when we posted the last one (again, in 2013, eight entire years ago). we aren't committing to a posting date yet, but we are ALL much closer to the end of this wait than the beginning.
this particular scene is only mildly spoilery and doesn't have any major content warnings to watch out for, aside from a mention of the ticking clock on claire's grace. it also introduces the minor character patrick, from spn episode 5.07, who has been on our cast page for some time; finally you can get some idea of what (small yet important) role he might play in this story. there are two more previews after this before the night is over - we hope you enjoy them.
---
Lucky for Claire, there's already a poker game in progress when she pushes the door of the pub open in a swirl of cold air. The man who wins the next hand looks younger than the others by far, though there's something about him that Claire can't quite place. He catches her eye across the bar and smiles around a toothpick as his compatriots grumble and wander away with their meager winnings.
"Room for one more?" says Claire, laying the sweetness on thick and her money on the table.
He waves a hand at the now-empty chairs. "I'm Patrick."
Surely he's faking that Irish accent; it's even more ridiculous than Jesse's Australia-Nebraska hybrid. And with the name Patrick, no less. "Amelia," Claire says, and pretends the accompanying flare of pain is only because she told a lie.
"Amelia," says Patrick, with an odd emphasis on the last two syllables. "You remind me of someone I once knew." He hands her a stack of poker chips and begins dealing out cards.
Claire leans forward so her braid falls over her shoulder and says, "How did you end up here, Patrick?"
He doesn't take the opportunity to look down her shirt, which is all the more irritating because she had half-hoped he wouldn't. "Luck," he says, snapping the k. He glances at his cards. "It's often on my side."
Lie. Claire doesn't often get such strong feedback from general statements like that, but this one burns. She ups her bet by more than she otherwise would have, careful to keep her voice neutral. "That must come in handy."
"Well, that is what we Irish are known for." He flips another chip onto the pile. "Ignoring the whole bit about the famines, of course. Pots of gold don't make very good eating."
Claire cracks a smile completely involuntarily, and brings a hand up much too late to hide it. Patrick quirks one eyebrow. His eyes stay on Claire's face for a long time, though, as his expression slides into something sadder.
She wouldn't, usually, but Claire asks, "Who was it?"
Patrick blinks, and the smirk is back in place like it never left. "Who was who, darling?"
"You said I reminded you of someone."
"She was a dancer." Patrick takes a chip from his considerable pile and spins it between two fingers. "Held herself like you do, especially when she was angry. Like if she didn't hold herself tight she'd float right up in the air."
Claire's muscles go even tenser when he says that, because he's not supposed to notice. "Raise," she says, dropping the chips in the pile.
Patrick exhales. "She wasn't much of a poker player." He puts his cards down, and slides them back into the deck before she can see them. "I fold."
Claire scoops the pile of chips toward her, stacking them carefully by value. Patrick's first bet this round was high, the highest he's played all game; why did he drop the bluff so fast? With this, plus the little extra hidden in her backpack, and if she's willing to eat vending machine food for breakfast—
The door opens, and a low hum starts up in the back of Claire's head. She knows who it is before Ben ever reaches the table.
"Claire!"
Patrick's eyes narrow the slightest margin. "Claire, is it?"
Fuck, and now she's been made, and he probably won't pay out and she'll have to sleep in a fucking snowbank because Ben Braeden can't keep his mouth shut. She opens her mouth the bare minimum required to say, "Leave."
She hears him settle harder on his feet but continues to stare at her cards. Patrick folded. She doesn't even have one pair.
"I know you don't forgive me yet," Ben says, and Claire breathes out hard. "But there's something Jesse and I need to—"
"I said leave, Ben," and she's turning to glare at him even though she wanted to play this cool. His cheeks are glowing red from being out in the cold, and a little behind him, far enough back to have a clear path to the door, Jesse's watching her too. When he sees Claire looking, his eyes drop to the floor.
"No, you don't get it," Ben begins, but Patrick interrupts.
"Is there a problem here?"
Ben seems to realize there are other people around, and he slides on his most affable grin. Claire can see how it's going to go, Ben charming everyone in a ten-foot radius, what a nice guy he is. Well, not if she gets there first.
"Yeah, there is," she says, savoring the lack of pain because it's true. "This asshole has been bothering me all night. I came here to get away from him."
"Oh, come on," says Ben, already rolling his eyes, but Claire said it loud enough that quite a few people heard her and some of them are starting to mutter. He notices, and ducks closer to her. "Look, Claire, can we just go?"
Patrick stands up. "I believe the lady asked you to leave."
Ben gives him a once-over. "Who are you?"
"Oh, I don't think you want to know the answer to that," says Patrick. His smile is not kind. "I suggest you be on your way."
Claire's not surprised to see Ben's jaw set at that. "Dude, this is so not your business," he says. "I know her, okay? We've been friends for years. I just want to talk to her."
Patrick bites a toothpick idly. "Think she can decide for herself who she wants to talk to."
Ben looks like he might be feeling stupid enough to throw a punch, but then Jesse is there at his side, one hand finding its way to the back of Ben's neck. Ben calms down instantly with Jesse touching him and Claire has been so, so painfully oblivious to never see this for what it was.
When Patrick notices Jesse his arms drop, and suddenly the air feels weird. "And who's your friend?"
"I'm nobody," says Jesse, though Claire would bet her pile of hypothetical money that his other hand is on the knife at his belt. "Just don't want to see this get out of hand."
Patrick looks at all three of them like links in a chain. "And did you not hear the lady's request, nobody?"
"Maybe you should stop talking for her, how 'bout," Ben retorts.
Claire appreciates the help, she supposes, but really what she wants is to be done with the displays of aggression and for everyone to leave her alone. "Go away, Ben," she says, and it comes out tired even to her own ears. He slumps a little deeper into Jesse's grip, and that's exactly the problem.
"Claire—"
"We're going," says Jesse, finally looking away from Patrick to catch Claire's eye again. He lowers his voice. "We'll be waiting outside."
"You'll be waiting a long time," Claire says, one parting shot for them to remember her by. "I do hope you two can find some way to occupy yourselves."
They both flinch, and Claire turns back to the table with bitter satisfaction in the back of her throat.
Patrick settles back into his seat, eyes still on the door. "You do have interesting friends."
"They're not my friends," says Claire. The lie burns like whiskey.
Patrick raises an eyebrow at her. "No? Then what are they?"
"We were playing," Claire says pointedly. When he doesn't move, she grabs the deck and starts to shuffle herself.
"I am playing," Patrick retorts. If he starts to go on about how you don't play the cards, you play the person, she might have to hit him herself. Instead he leans back and chews on his toothpick. "Let me see if I got it straight. You and Ben, you've been friends for a long time."
Claire places her bet, refusing to acknowledge that he's still talking. There's nothing impressive about repeating back what Ben let slip.
"And you're not one to make friends easily, are you, Amelia." She does look up at that, and Patrick, smirking, corrects himself. "Claire."
She deals the next card.
"So maybe you thought Ben was something special. But you didn't trust yourself with him. So you told him to wait."
"Raise," Claire says, and she doesn't even have that good a hand but she wants to clean him out. He won't stop fucking smiling.
"Some people would wait, you know," says Patrick. "Some people would wait a very long time."
Some while back Ben had told her, There is nobody else. Well. I'm nobody, Jesse said. Claire turns out her hand. "Triple sixes."
Patrick sighs. "You're letting me get to you, love. Can't play a good game if your mind's out that door." He tosses his cards onto the table in front of her. "Full house, and I'm guessing you could've used this cash. Quit while you've got any left." He drags the chips out of her reach.
Claire picks up his cards and the rest of the deck. "We're not done playing."
"All that ice isn't going to keep you safe forever." Patrick leans back. "Deal."
And because Claire is tired, and lost, and vindictive, she lets the cards slide through her hands with that special twist Ben taught her.
Patrick nudges a considerable pile of chips into the middle of the table. "Some free advice for you, love," he says, eyes dark. "Your life's too short to pretend you want nothing and no one to come near your heart."
Her grace flares up even before she can shape the words I don't. He doesn't know how right he is—Claire's life is looking very short indeed, these days, and nothing Ben or Jesse can do will put a stop to the invasive light eroding her body from the inside out. Her heart's probably toxic by now anyway.
Claire takes a deep breath and shows her cards, spades all in a row just like she planned. "Straight flush."
Patrick tosses his hand onto the table. "Four aces."
"What?" But there they are, even though Claire could've sworn she cut the ace of diamonds into the middle of the deck and buried the ace of hearts even further down. She locks her teeth as soon as the word escapes, but it's too late; his cold smile tells her he knows what she did.
"I don't like cheaters," says Patrick. He places a polished wooden box on the table and begins gathering the chips back into it, along with any chance she had of getting a hotel room tonight. "And you, of all people, ought to value honesty. Better luck next time, Amelia."
Claire clenches her jaw. She stands to leave—then Patrick catches her hand.
"I'm not doing this for you," he murmurs, and she feels the papery crinkle of fresh bills on her palm. She grips the money instinctively even as she draws back, other hand curling into a fist. No one at all is watching them. But Patrick just looks at her, an unsettling depth to his gaze. "You should tell him how you feel," he says, and releases her.
Claire pockets the money and bolts before he can change his mind.

SPN 15.12. I am not entirely sure what happened, entirely, or what is going to happen but I enjoyed that immensely.
KAIA LIVES! KAIA LIVES! KAIA LIVES! Okay, reasonably, I’d say that’s likely to have been part of their outlining for Wayward Sisters S1 and this was the plan all along. But they had to work this story in via guest spots on SPN. I’m still incredibly delighted we got to see this play out. I think if WS went to series, they might have kept both Kaias because there would be more space for that, but the way dark Kaia goes out, well if you’re going to kill her off swapping her for the original Kaia where it felt wrong or off to have her killed off in the first place (WHICH WAS THE POINT AND THEY NEVER INTENDED HER TO STAY DEAD BTW)...she went out strong. Elementally powerful. She went saving Kaia. There’s a lot to unpack with that. But I think original Kaia’s story was so important, and having her rescued and restored and going home--and not still dead--I’m just really glad SPN got to play this through. Plus the furthering of dreamhunter. That having to be (as far as we know) off screen but at least we know.
Jody. Jodddddyyyyyyyyyy. JODY’S HEART. MY HEART.
The Wayward Sisters check-ins. We should have had a whole series, we don’t, and those check-ins mean the world. It’s a whole living story and family that we know exists out there even if they can’t get their due.
Cas watching after Claire and Jody because he instinctively knows the emotional impact on Claire if she lost Jody not just Kaia, I am so proud of his character development showing there. That was emotional instincts. Cas often gets emotional stuff, well, wrong, or he’s kinda thick-headed about it, but he has been through a thing or two and he has seen a thing or two and felt a thing or two. Cas still looking after Claire and wanting to do right by her, still watching over her.
I kinda enjoyed Merle, she really had little patience with Team Free Will and their shenanigans. Poor Billie, YOU HAD ONE JOB MERLE! ONE!! JOB!!!!
Jack really isn’t acting soulless. There were so many things in that episode that pointed to actual empathy and sincere regret and actual feelings not Jack trying to do the right thing just so he can pass as empathetic. That moment where he touches Mary’s initials on the table he was alone, he wasn’t trying to act soulful for anyone else’s benefit. With Kaia, feels like he’s trying to make amends, and even if he can’t undo some of the things he caused (even if it was soulless Jack, not Jack-Jack) you try to pay it forward and fix whatever else you can. Possibly, Sam made an assumption, Dean and Cas went along with it, because nobody like Billie sat them down using small words and said “Jack has a soul now, ask me how.” Or it’s semblance of a soul. It’s something. I’m not sure what but Jack isn’t at all how he was in late S14...he’s also different than early to mid S14 Jack who had a soul. He feels--tempered.
That scene where Sam tries to talk to Jack was sweet but so awkward. None of them seem to know where to put themselves with Jack now and that is, IMO, fitting given the events of S14. They are glad he’s back but...it’s awkward. I also think Jack, while trying to make amends, has no idea how to even begin to make up for things with his dads. Maybe killing Chuck is what he thinks he needs to do to fix that.
I had a feeling that part of the Dean and Cas healing, and going full circle this season would wind up being them on the same page over Jack. I enjoyed that scene, although avoidance of Dean and Cas discussing stuff they still need to actually discuss is...hahahaha yeah I’ll just stick a pin in that. No longer sure that’s happening but otoh there’s a bunch more episodes shot and in the can. So we’ll see. Also Cas’s deal with The Empty is still just sitting there not talked about not dealt with. *nervous laughter*
Nevertheless that’s an important Dean and Cas moment and THEY LOOK SO HAPPY AT EACH OTHER. Toasting. Here’s to us, no longer fighting over our adopted son. YEESH AND CAS LOOKS SO AT PEACE OVER NOT FIGHTING WITH DEAN. They’re like a married couple whose been married 38484782 years and got through a very very rough period with their wild card of a teenage kid and their ipso facto marriage almost fully smashed up but here they are still together despite it all, and now their trouble child is trying to do the right thing and saving people so CHEERS. That’s the actual plot. Do I even need to make it an analogy, that is kinda what it is.
Billie is just so so so damn cool. I don’t trust her any more than TFW do but she is really damn cool, I would probably listen to Billie too. But any time someone says “destiny” to Sam and Dean on this show and my hair stands on ends and klaxons go off in my head...just me? This is not going to go the way Billie thinks, I suspect.
So Chuck is tired of all the other worlds, “the failed spinoffs,” because they aren’t THIS Sam and Dean, his Sam and Dean, he does actually care about them in a twisted selfish kind of way, he appreciates their emotional strength as a story, they are his favorite...to the extend he will annihilate everything else so he can just focus on his Sam and Dean show and oh damn is that all so very very pointed I could cut myself on the in-show meta. Because the drive of this episode and its emotional heart was rescuing Kaia, it was Jody and her family, even though that other world was doomed, the story itself is showing us stories where it’s not just Sam and Dean while Chuck--the supervillain--is saying only Sam and Dean matter. But why was he pointing to an image of Dean and Cas while talking about Sam and Dean. Why of all the moments to bring up on that TV screen he picks Dean and Cas sitting alone in the kitchen and then Sam walks in...to talk about how just Sam and Dean blah blah blah blah. I don’t have an answer to that but I think it’s interesting. I don’t really want to try to spec this out but I do feel we’re headed towards Chuck further wiping the board in *this* world because only Sam and Dean really interest him and he’s starting with the other worlds and it’s going to spiral in closer and closer with those around them in this world. The megavillain doesn’t value anyone but Sam and Dean. Oh yes let that in-story commentary roll around on your brain.

15.11: The Gamblers - Episode Review/Recap
Tumblr media
This ep follows directly on from last week.   The episode was very mixed, there were 2 distinct storylines that merged at the end.  I had a few issues with the Castiel/Jack side of the story, which I’ll cover later, but the Sam and Dean scenes, for the most part, I was able to enjoy.  I even caught myself smiling… fucking smiling at several moments, because this?  This was a glimpse of what my show once was.  This also explains to the “Just stop watching” brigade why I’m still watching.  The brother scenes were a nugget of gold amongst the dross and worth watching for.
Thank you, Davey Perez, Meredith Glynn and Director Charles Beeson for reminding me, albeit briefly, why I fell in love with this show, and at the same time, why I dislike much of Dabb’s run, which in my humble opinion hasn’t just veered the ship slightly off course; it crashed into an iceberg in 11.21 and has been slowly sinking since then.  I think last week’s episode brought us to the point where half the ship is now vertical, ready to plunge into the depths of the icy ocean...
...Anyway, enough about sinking ships, the key thing I struggled with going into this episode is the obvious fuck up from the previous week; the entire premise of the Winchester’s losing their “luck” and being reduced to “normal” people, and I want to talk rant about that for a few more minutes before we get onto this episode.  If you want to skip that, I’ll put start and end of rant, so you can skip forward.
Start of rant
In order to enjoy this episode, you pretty much have to ignore much of the previous episode and… that doesn’t sit well with me.  Last week wasn’t just a single scene you can forget ever existed (e.g. the trench-coat scene or Dean’s apology to Cass).  What Dabb did fucked with the entire concept of the show; that the Winchesters are ordinary people who do extraordinary things.  So, it’s really difficult to shake that epic fuck up off and just move on.
I just can’t ever buy in to the concept that the Winchesters were “favoured” or have more luck than “normal” people.   I mean look at Sam’s life for starters; he didn’t know his mom, he was fed demon blood as a baby, was dragged up in a life he hated, constantly moving, being brought up in crappy motels and forced to train to become a hunter.  The love of his life is murdered, and he becomes an orphan at 22.  He died at 23 (for the first time) and then he loses the last remaining member of his family at 24.  The Winchesters are far from “lucky” and if I could be bothered, I’d go looking for mentions of “with the Winchester luck” that have been peppered throughout the series.  Chuck has not “favoured” the Winchesters at all and they haven’t had Charmed lives because of Chuck’s interference.
I also can’t buy into the concept that the Winchesters are anything other than “normal” in the first place.  Sadly, they showed last weeks “fight” scenes during the recap and it did nothing, other than enrage me again.  Sam and Dean are excellent fighters and hunters because they trained from a young age to be as good as they are.  They weren’t “given” anything and certainty not a free ride and fuck Dabb once again for writing that bullshit.  It was nothing less than petty because we rejected his instant Hunter!Barbie fiasco that wasted too much of season 13.
So, how do I move forward from that and manage to enjoy this episode?  The answer in my opinion, is you can’t, because even with a few good brother moments, the entire premise of this week’s episode fails to make sense, because the previous episode fails to make sense.  I’ll cover why that is when we get to the pool game.
End Rant
The episode opens on a recap, and I ask myself why they are using all the bad bits from the previous few episodes, before I remember there weren’t many good bits to select from.  That clip of Jensen with the teeth is still funny. 😂
I love the intro again this week.  The setting was good, the guest actors, the camerawork, the music choice – North to Alaska - which complimented the scene, rather than felt like nails being dragged down a chalkboard.  All classic spn so far, so it has my attention.
Two men (Joey and Leonard) are playing a game of pool and you can tell this is a high stakes game from the get go.  What the stakes are, we don’t yet know, but when the game ends, we see 2 coins being held in a contraption above the pool table; one glows green then dulls with the coin head disappearing, the other glows green and gets brighter with the coin head gaining in definition.  I don’t think this looks good for the loser.  He agrees and tries to attack the winner with his pool cue.  He’s stopped from doing so by a bouncer who turfs him outside.  👋 cutie tall bouncer.  There’s an absolutely great shot of the loser tossing his coin in the air and the music gets loud again (Hey, I’m here as much for the settings, lighting, music and camerawork as I’m here for the Winchesters – sue me) and then…. Splat.  He’s hit by a truck.  Poor Leonard, red shirt of the episode.  RIP my friend.
As an aside, I like how you guys announce which pocket the 8 ball is going into, we don’t do that.
This was a great into, interesting premise that immediately sucked me in, wanting to find out more.  This is my show.  Great job so far.
The next scene though shows once again how useless, at least for me, the writing is around Castiel.  They wrote an entire scene with him walking into the bunker, seeing a note that has been left, going down to read it “Cass, we’ve gone to Alaska, Sam”.  I’m not going to rant about the twats that insist on saying Sam has spelt it wrong, I’ve already done a post about the arrogance of fans trying to tell the show that created the character that they are wrong with the spelling of that character, so I’ll save you by moving on.
This entire scene, while I liked the shots of the otherwise empty bunker, was just wasting time for me.  I’ve seen people say Sam left a note because Castiel was in heaven and wouldn’t get a text message and how clever of Sam to resort to paper.  I don’t know about anyone else, but I dip in and out of WiFi zones all the time and the moment I dip back in, my phone pings with multiple notifications, so I personally thought this scene was dumb.  It would have been better to see Castiel appear back at the sandpit and get a text notification from Sam with the same message.
Even better, you could take this scene away and it changes nothing that happens so why include it?  *Whispers* J2 wanted time off and the writers are incompetent of filling that space with something more interesting so use “filler”.
Interestingly, my computer froze on Castiel’s face for 5 minutes so fuck you Norton or Windows 10 Update for your bad timing in running something in the “background”
Tumblr media
BROMENT ALERT
We’re finally with what I’m watching the show for.  Dean and Sam are in baby and driving towards Alaska.  Sam’s phone is lighting up with messages and we find out through Dean that it’s Eileen. 🙄. Oh, Eileen’s being shoved into the narrative now?  Sorry Eileen, the third wheel position on the show has already been filled since Season 7. And fuck you again Dabb because I loved Eileen as a friend of Sam and it’s just yet another thing your reverse Midas fingers have screwed over this season.
Dean: Silent mode is always an option
Me: I love you, have my babies… wait, that came out wrong
Eileen thinks the plan is a little too good to be true.  Sam thinks she might be right.  He’s not convinced the place even exists or that it can fix their problem. Dean thinks it couldn’t hurt and he’s done with normal, including the constant heartburn.
Sam: You know if you changed your diet….  Dean’s frown 😂
Sam insists that no one other than Garth has heard of it and it isn’t in the lore. Dean believes it’s got to be there. He believes Chuck isn’t messing with them,
Dean: He [Chuck] wants us off our game, he wants us weak, ‘cos he’s coming for us Sammy, and when he does, and we haven’t figured this out, we’re DOA.
Mostly a great brother scene, apart from the forced insertion of Eileen – are we incapable of getting a broment in the final chuck damn season, without the completely unnecessary forced inclusion of a third party???!  The scene ends with a great shot of baby.
Back at the bunker and Castiel hears a phone ringing, and… I’m trying not to nitpick, but the way this case comes about just annoys me. There are better ways of bringing this about, than how they did it. But moving on, Castiel answers a random phone that was ringing in Sam’s room, and it’s a sheriff (Jeb Evans) looking for FBI agent, Watts. Castiel tells the sheriff that Agent Watts is working a case in Alaska, and that he is Agent… Lizzo.  I can only assume Dean gave him that alias as I don’t think Castiel would know any musicians on his own.  I like Jeb, who tells Agent Lizzo, they have a homicide and the suspect is someone Agent Watts flagged into the system… and guys… Sam is back to hacking into police systems and I just… I need a moment here as they’ve remembered Sam can hack into systems!
The agent tells Castiel that the suspect is Jack Kline.
Ummm… Castiel, are you... okay?  Do you… do you maybe need to use the bathroom?  Oh, you’re emoting?  Okay dokay then.  I can’t with this.  I got more out of Leo in the less than 2 minutes he was on screen than I got out of Castiel since his return in season 7.
Back with the impala, which rolls into a diner stop.  Sam is asleep, and Dean whacks him to wake him up.  Sam wonders why they’ve stopped at “Round up café”.    Dean says it’s the last stop for food for a few hundred miles.
Sam (frowns): Grab something out of the cooler
Dean: Yeah, no, I polished off the last of the sandwiches while you were out
Sam (annoyed): We’re on a budget!
Me (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Last weeks puppy dog eyes fiasco aside, Dean’s still wrapped round Sam’s fingers, they enter the diner, slap some coins on the counter and ask what they can get for $4.60.  Apparently, it’s a slice of pie and a coffee, and I’m moving to Alaska when they secede from the US because that would barely get you just the coffee here.
Dean asks for two forks for the pie
Me (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Long story short on this scene, they get out of the waitress there’s a local urban legend about a magic poolhall in the middle of nowhere, that if you win, you come back lucky.  She says though that no one ever comes back.  Turns out she knew Leonard from the intro, and he went up there because the bank was going to take his house and he met with an accident.
Sam says at least they know now what the downside is.  Dean doesn’t agree, he thinks it could be great, pool is the game of champions, kings, his game, our game, and they have great memories of hustling pool
Sam: yes, because we had to… to eat!
Still not seeing the “luck” Dabb wrote about.  Imagine thinking they were remotely lucky; running scams or hustling pool to put a roof over their head or food in their stomach. And this is where I disconnect with this week’s episode, because of last week’s writing. How are they going to even be good at pool, a game that takes practice and skill?  The things taken away seem to be random and plot devices; lock picking, fighting, hot metal burns, while it appears Dean can still drive okay, fix baby and I’m guessing their pool is going to be okay too, otherwise what’s the point of this episode?  There’s no believable rules to this “bad luck/normal” and I’m left completely drifting and because of it.  It's just badly thought out and executed.
Dean: if pool is the way we get our mojo back then maybe we ain’t as screwed as we thought
Waitress: Hey, you guys drive an impala?... I think you guys have a flat.
😂
Back with Cass and sheriff Jeb, Cass has managed to set up the laptop and access a video the sheriff has sent him.  The video is of Jack killing a doctor and eating his heart. 😷 Jack, no!  I’ll come back to the heart eating later.
Back with the boys, another shot of baby as they pull into “Lurlenes”.  Baby isn’t sounding too good and I think I missed that earlier, but it did somewhat register that she was sounding louder than normal. Good touch.
Dean walks over one of the coins as they head for the entrance which I guess might be Leonard’s from earlier.  I like little details like this.  Once inside, Sam points out they don’t have beer money, much less what it costs to buy into a game.  Dean says they’ll figure something out and goes to the bar and orders two waters. I’m guessing that’s going to hit Dean more than health conscious Sam.  Dean asks the bar person, Evie, how they get into a game.  She calls Pax over and it’s the tall, cutie bouncer from earlier.  Sam asks Evie if she saw Leonard and she says no, but you can tell she’s lying.
Pax takes them to his office and explains the rules of the game, that they don’t bet with money, they bet with luck.  He gets Dean to touch a coin he puts down and it turns green.  Pax looks at the coin and says “not great”
Dean: And that means?
Pax explains that everyone walks in with a certain amount of luck, that the green glow was Dean’s and it was “about average.”  Dean thinks that sounds about right.  I’m going to head-canon that Dean’s luck is about average of the people that find the pool hall, but below average in general, due to Chuck screwing around with them.
Pax says if Dean wins a game, he might see his fortunes improve.
Sam: And if he loses?
 Pax says he can keep playing, but if the coin goes blank, that means you’re out of luck, and you’ve got to leave.  He asks if they’ve got any questions.
Sam (a bit pissy): What is this place? Who owns it?
Pax says he doesn’t know, but if they don’t like it, they are free to leave.
Dean: When I win, can I split it (indicates Sam)… the luck?
Pax (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍 Oh, wait, sorry, that was me
Pax: it’s yours, you can do what you want
Sam asks for a second to talk to his husband brother.
Sam: no, no, no, no, no way (complete with shaking finger)
Dean: man, I’ve been slinging pool cues since before you were born
Snarky!Sam: when you were four, really? In between snack time and nap? 😂
Dean (internally): damn, I forgot you were my brother for a second and I can’t bullshit you
Dean tells Sam that they need to do this, and that Sam is pretty much better than him, at everything, he’s not mad about it, he’s proud… but he can wipe the floor with Sam at pool.  Dean takes Sam’s epic eyeroll as silent permission he can play.
Back with Castiel, he investigates the doctor’s office and finds a weird case which has a sword inside.  We flashback to a previous episode with Sam tied to a chair (🙄 it must have been a Thursday).  Anyway, the flashback tells us the doctor was one of the Grigori, a brotherhood of perfect beings.  I’d forgotten about them and might have to look them up before I touch the heart eating thing. Note: I did look them up and it was a Claire episode, so never mind, that’s why I forgot about them.
We transition from Cas to Jack and he seems to be following someone with the same case as the doctor, so another Grigori.  He follows the Grigori into an abandoned building.
Back at the pool hall and no one is biting to play with the noob.  Okay, I’m ashamed to say I laughed at this next bit, Dean deliberately breaks badly and loudly proclaims that he’s rusty at this.  Oh Dean.  No one’s going to fall for… Surprisingly he actually gets a taker and asks Dean to rack up.  Sam goes back to the bar to speak to Evie.  She asks if he plays and he says not really.  Sam asks Evie what the woman’s deal is that’s playing Dean (Moira).  Evie says she’s been here a while and her sister is in a coma.
Sam goes into awkward question mode, and I have flashbacks to the earlier seasons. He asks about rotten eggs.  Evie responds: Just Charlie…   We pan over to Charlie and he’s playing pool badly. Sam then asks if she’s seen “little bundles” laying around.  She says no, but she gets that he’s trying to figure the place out.  Sam says places like this don’t exist for no reason, she answers that most people think it’s a godsend.  She gives him information on a couple of people playing, they won at first, could have walked away winners, but kept playing until their luck ran sour. She repeats they should have walked away which is a clear warning for Sam who looks over at his brother who wins the game.
Back with Jack, he’s got an angel blade and is still after the Grigori. Unfortunately, the Grigori twigged he was being followed and now has Jack at blade point.
Back at the pool hall and Sam is trying to convince Dean they need to leave, and I’m trying not to be distracted by the picture in the scene behind them.
 Dean (brandishing his coin at Sam): Come on man, I’m on a roll
Snarky!Sam: Dean, you won one game!
Sam thinks the place sucks you in and that if Dean keeps playing, he’ll lose and end up like Leonard.  Dean convinces Sam who reluctantly allows him to have one more game.
Me (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Dean finds his mark, which is Joey from the intro.  We see Dean playing well and Joey asks what his name was again.
Dean: my name is Dean Winchester and I am going to kick your ass.
Sam: 😍 that’s my platonic soulmate husband brother
Joey smiles.
They talk as Dean clears the table.  Turns out Joey used to work the bull riding circuit.
Dean (cocky smile): tell me, how was that?… corner pocket.   He misses the shot
Joey (grinning): good times (he pots and all he can do is hide the cue ball behind another ball, giving Dean a very tricky shot on the 8 ball)… and some not so good.
Dean goes to take the shot and Joey challenges double or nothing if Dean misses. Sam doesn’t like it.  Dean asks if Joey is trying to hustle him.
Joey: I thought you were going to kick my ass
Dean smiles and agrees to the deal, does a trick shot with the cue ball jumping over the other ball and potting the 8 ball.
Joey closes his eyes.  Sam looks happy, then Joey says: a hell of a shot.
Dean watches as the coins glow green and Joey’s coin is now dull, and this is sad because even if Sam and Dean haven’t realised the implication yet, Joey is not long for this world.  Joey leaves, and Sam and Dean follow.  Joey congratulates Dean on the game yet again and says, “I guess you can’t hustle a hustler.” Sam’s concerned when Joey starts coughing.  Turns out Joey is dying, he has cancer, he came to the pool hall to beat it, and Sam and Dean have finally caught up with me that this game sucks.  This is the first time in a long time, I’ve felt anything for a character on this show that we only meet for a limited time in a single episode, so I’m going to kudos the writing and the guest star for this one. This is what happens when you actually put some characterisation into your writing.
Sam and Dean go back inside.  Dean said the plan worked so they should hit the road.
Sam: What about everybody else?
Sam wants to stay and figure out how they can help them. Dean reminds him they are in a fight with God and they just got their mojo back.  Sam challenges whether there’s even enough luck in the coin for them. Dean says they’ll give it a try by him going for a drive and if baby’s okay, they are leaving.  End of.
Back with Castiel and he meets sheriff Jeb at the abandoned building Jack was captured in. A transient spotted Jack going into the building so called the police. Castiel asks Jeb if there are any other abandoned places around. Jeb tells him about a church.
Back with Sam and he’s talking to Charlie, who is apparently playing so his team can win the Super Bowl and part of me is 😂 and part of me is, I feel you my friend, because Canucks and the Stanley Cup, and desperate measures at this stage.
Sam: that’s great, it is, but is it really worth your life?
Me (picturing the Stanley cup being paraded through the streets of Vancouver): …Yes?!
The puppy dog eyes fail again, Charlie says “just one more game.” And goes back to playing
Evie says at least Sam tried but no one will listen.  She says none of “us” are going anywhere.  Sam asks if they are trapped here, if Evie was trapped here.   She leaves rapidly.
Dean arrives back, baby’s dead again, he didn’t even make it out of the parking lot. Sam takes a look at the coin Dean slams down.  He believes Dean should have won more luck than he did, given how many people Joey likely beat before Dean played him and all that accumulated luck should have gone to Dean when he won, but it doesn’t seem to.  Sam thinks someone is stealing the luck, skimming off the top.
Dean: You mean like the house?
Sam (lifts coin showing head): her… I think
Dean takes the coin and reads: Atrox Fortvnta
Sam says she’s the Roman goddess of luck.  So, Sam’s allowed to be smart as a plot contrivance this week?  *cough* hot metal burns *cough*.
They go speak to Evie about who runs the place.  She says she can’t help them. Sam asks why she warned him in the first place.  Evie says so he would take his brother and go.    Dean asks why Evie is there, does the god have something over her. Evie says she played and lost and is only alive because she lets her stay as long as she keeps working.   Sam asks if the god is here, but Evie doesn’t know, she only talks to Pax and drops the revelation that Pax is the god’s son.
Back with Jack and the Grigori has injured him and holding him captive. He knows what Jack is and that he’s powerful.  The Grigori wants to know why Jack killed his kind.  The Grigori have their own frequency of angel radio. Me, 🙄 of course you do because easy plot device.  Before his brother died, he called to the Grigori.  He asks Jack if he did that to draw him out, to kill him too.
Back with Sam and Dean, Sam approaches Pax wanting to ask a question. While Pax is focused on Sam, Dean grabs him and holds him at knifepoint.
Sam (niceness gone): Where’s your mom?
Loved that bit
Pax doesn’t answer so Sam shouts “Fortuna.”  Dean follows with, “We have your son”
 Moira walks through the pool hall and we know she is now Fortuna.
Sam says they know she’s skimming luck and they want it back.  Dean threatens to kill Pax if she doesn’t
Fortuna: well, you probably could, his daddy was human, but no
Pax (shocked pikachu face): Mom!
Fortuna: I’m sorry baby, I can always make more sons
Sam and Dean (shocked pikachu faces).
Uh oh, leverage gone. Dean releases Pax, but not before the blade cuts his throat a little.
Dean demands Fortuna to play him for it. She says she’s already played him and got a read on him.  He’s just a “beach read”.  Sexy, but skimmable.
Dean (how dare you face): beach read? lady, I’m Tolstoy
Fortuna laughs and says, “That’s very funny” and approaches Sam: this one here, now he could be interesting
Dean (Protective big brother mode activated): Wait, no, no, that’s…. Uh uh
Sam (I’m 36 years old Dean, not a kid anymore mode activated): Fine… Yeah, okay, but not for our luck.  I’ll play for the lives of everybody in here.
Fortuna doesn’t agree, she says the deal is only for their luck and if they lose, she wants their lives.  She wants to make an example of them.
The Grigori is torturing Jack, cutting his skin.  Jack says he can’t kill him.  There’s then expose on the Grigori feeding off souls, and this one feeds off children. I think I’m supposed to not feel sorry for the Grigori when Jack eats his heart, but I do have a few issues which I’ll come onto later.  Jack looks to the side and it’s clear he catches something.  The Grigori reaches for his sword and points it at Jack’s throat. He asks who told Jack that.  He answers Death.
The Grigori senses someone behind him.  Now given the Grigori are supposed to be elite and much more powerful than ordinary angels, I’m embarrassed for this one and have no idea how on Earth this Grigori managed to survive to being last of his kind as even Castiel despatched him fairly easily, without too much of a fight, but “new canon” I guess. 🤷‍♀️
With no tests whatsoever, Castiel releases Jack from his bonds.  I’m presuming one of Castiel random powers of the week is being able to automatically tell it’s Jack.  We get a Cass and Jack hug and I … don’t really care to be honest.  I can’t watch Cass without viewing that awful scene in Purgatory so I’m over him.
Back at the pool hall, Sam breaks, potting 2 balls immediately.  I love, love, love this next bit: as Sam lines up his next shot, we see Dean nodding in agreement, because yep, that’s the shot he would have went for too.   Sam proceeds to knock down a couple more, Fortuna has said a couple of things, but Sam is focusing on the game.  She asks why they need the luck so bad, girlfriend problems? Liver failure? (She looks at Dean here).  Sam answers: “a curse by god” and misses the next shot.
Fortuna: Life’s a bitch and then you die
Me: Hey! That’s my philosophy!
Dean: THE god literally cursed us
Fortuna (sarcastic disbelief): You’ve met
Dean: Yeah, Little guy, squirrelly as hell
Fortuna: Yeah, that’s him… well, welcome to the club
Dean: the club?
Fortuna answers with exposition while winning the game. God created the world, but humans created the gods, kind of, which led to God creating the other gods. Dean asks why, which makes her angry and she misses the next shot.  She says they were created to take the blame for anything that went wrong.  That only worked for a while before his ego got the better of him, now he hides behind whatever religion pays the biggest syndication deals.  She keeps talking about how pissed she is and that she’s holding a grudge.  Sam meanwhile is quietly potting balls and winning the game.  She realises this and shakes off her mood, “oh well, what can you do?”
Dean: we’re going to fight him
Fortuna: are you now?  And when you lose?
Sam’s voice from off screen: we lose swinging
He then appears in shot and says “8 ball, corner pocket” and she realises the game is nearly over.
Sam lines up for the shot, looks at Dean briefly, then… he wins.  I wasn’t expecting that, and Dean is happy too.
Fortuna (to Sam):  you little minx, you got me talking!
Sam smirks
Fortuna: you’re good
Sam: I learned from my brother
Dean approaches: all right, you know the deal, even up
Fortuna offers to make it interesting, if they are going to fight God, that’s the stuff of heroes and they are going to need the luck of heroes.  Hercules, some other people, she helped them all.  Sam asks what the catch is. She says another game, double or nothing.
Dean: Double?  That’s how the cowboy died.
Sam agrees to play, “but not for more luck,” he indicates the room, “for them.  If I win, you have to let them go.”
Fortuna: I’m not stopping them
Sam: Okay, when I win, you have to give back the luck you stole, close up shop
Fortuna: What is with you and these losers?  They’re nothing, they don’t matter
Sam: they matter to me
Dean: they matter to us
Everyone in the poolhall (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Fortuna agrees.  She breaks, and it all goes downhill from there.  Sam doesn’t even get to play a shot.
They lost. There’s silence
Fortuna: you challenged the goddess of luck in her own joint, what did you think was going to happen?
Me: pretty much this tbh, I’m actually surprised Sam won the first game
Dean: well, we had to try
Fortuna: well, that was stupid
My poor boys.  They leave the poolhall.
Dean: I thought she was going to kill us
Sam: well she doesn’t have to, our luck will do that on its own … Dean, we can’t just…
Dean:… leave ‘em?  Yeah, I know.
Me (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Dean: all right, well let’s go get WiFi and see what kills Lady Luck, we’ll circle back
Sam’s agreeing when Evie comes out, followed by the other players.  They ask her what happened. She says Fortuna shut it down.  They ask why
 Evie: Because of you, she said she thought your kind had gone extinct
Sam: Our kind?
Evie: Heroes, like the old days
Fortuna also gave her a message to pass on, “Don’t play Chucks game, make him play yours.
She hands Sam a coin which he somewhat reluctantly takes.  He holds it in his closed fist as she walks away.  He opens his hand and we see the coin glow green on his skin.  Dean “grabby hands” Winchester snatches the coin, getting a glare from Sam and the coin glows green in his hand too.
They get into the car and Dean fires up the engine.  “We’re back baby!”
Aww, Dean called Sam baby.
Me (sighing): platonic soulmate Husbands! 😍
Also me: You can take your “Castiel is a lamp” sub zero text and whack yourself over the head with it.
They drive away. And I’m left behind wondering if they’ve got their “normal” luck back or the supercharged hero luck that Sam said he didn’t want and that’s why he was reluctant to take the coin.
They arrive back at the bunker.  Dean’s scratching lottery cards and doesn’t win.  So much for the superhero luck.
Sam consoles his husband brother that they might not have won the lottery, but they have no car trouble, the credit cards work again, and Dean was able to eat back to back bacon double cheeseburgers, that didn’t kill him. So…
Dean: that was beautiful by the way… I’m just saying, would it have killed her to give us a little extra?
Sam: well, she thinks we’re really heroes, maybe they don’t get all the answers
Well hopefully that conversation answered my concern from earlier.
Cass appears, looking shifty (when doesn’t he tbh).  They know something is wrong and Sam asks him.  He steps aside and Jack appears. Jack dorky waves hello and we all melt and immediately forget he killed their mom and did some other really naughty stuff that at the very least should get him a time out.  Apparently, Dean and Sam forget too.    This scene is shot with Jack and Cass at one side of the reading room and Sam and Dean on the other.
Sam: Jack?
Castiel (to Sam): it’s really him
Sam walks over to Jack first and gets quicker as he reaches him and we get a Sam and Jack hug, and since I didn’t get one in season 14, I’ll ignore the mom killing, heart eating etc. for a few minutes and enjoy the hell out of this one. Yes, I’m fickle!  But I loved this nougat eating baby before Dabb ruined him.
Dean walks across more slowly, reaches and grasps Jack behind his neck, staring into his face as if checking it’s really him.  I think he’s struggling to see past the burnt-out eyes which was their last view of him.  He looks briefly at Cass once.  To me it’s a silent thank you (headcanon for bringing Jack back for Sam in particular), and an equally silent, you’re welcome.  Jack looks a little apprehensive as obviously the last time he was alive, Dean was going to shoot him, stopped only by Sam.
They all have a beer at the map table, Sam asks Jack about eating hearts, so it’s good that hasn’t been hidden.  Jack said he had to.
Dean (to Castiel): and you let him?
Castiel nods (likely waiting for the anger for doing the wrong thing)
Dean (shrugs): hmmm
And… that is not my Dean.  They’ve turned him into a neutered house cat and idiots are calling it “growth”.  And all I can hope is that his natural instincts fight their way through, I believe it’s wrong to trust Jack is okay eating hearts, even of ones that eat children’s souls and I hope we see that develop as we progress.
Sam: you could have called us
Jack: every day I wanted to come home, but I couldn’t
Dean: why not?
Jack: because if I don’t stay hidden, if I use my powers, my grandfather, he’ll know I’m back, and try and kill me… again… he’s afraid of me, and that’s why we had to wait.
Castiel: Billy kept him hidden in the empty, until Chuck went off world
Jack: she let me out when it was safe
Dean: safe to what? Eat a bunch of angel hearts?
Jack: safe to do what I have to.
Turns out the hearts were just the beginning, they made Jack strong, but not strong enough.  If Jack follows her plan, he’ll get stronger and he’ll be able to kill god.
Sam and Dean (in winsync):  bitch please, this is our show!
Not really, that was just me and we end on that note.  I could wish we had ended on “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, but season 15 music budget.  Sigh.
So, I have a few other issues with this episode, particularly with the Jack side of the storyline, off the top of my head;
1)      I’m hoping we aren’t sweeping what he did in season 14 under a rug, a la Castiel.
2)      I’m hoping we aren’t just going to support him eating hearts (even of bad angels) without fully investigating what this supposed plan is.
3)      I’m struggling with the heart thing anyway. I don’t believe an angel has a heart to eat, only the human vessel does so I’m going to need an explanation on why eating human hearts is supposedly goring to make jack stronger, and why we don’t care about the human vessel
4)      I’m struggling with how a lesser god can give back what God took away, even if that lesser god is the goddess of luck, God still trumps her.
Other than that, I think Death is bad now, or at least Billy’s version of death is. I think they changed course on wanting to kill the Winchesters a couple of seasons ago when they realised they could play a part in them reaping God. Possible reason, just being tired after all this time, and wanting it all to end. And it can’t end before Chuck dies. Possible power play.
I still think Chuck will die.  I still think the Winchesters will become firewalls, not sure what Jack is, other than a toddler whose power needs to be bound until he can wield it responsibly, and Castiel is going to sacrifice himself at some point. And the less we say about Eileen, the better.
Next episode is up after Hellatus the welcome break from the caricature this show has become

A Nice Day Off
Request: Could you write a spn/tua crossover fic? I need this in my life!
Pairing: slight Destiel. That’s it. It’s also pretty long because I felt like this needed backstory and the concept was fun to write. Enjoy!
Dean groans with frustration at the sight of a red hem turning the corner of the labyrinth he’s currently trapped in with his brother and Cas, with no way to call their backup, Jack, for help, because there’s no service in this goddamn maze.
First a trail of bodies with different organs cut out starting in, what a coincidence, the same town Sam and Dean were hunting a ghost in. But the mutilated people hadn’t stopped showing up in the hospital, even though they’d definitely taken care of the ghost. Then there was a girl who’d had one of her eyes scooped out, claiming to only remember seeing the color red before she’d passed out again from the pain. The color red, and a weird shed in the woods behind the high school with strange markings on the door.
The shed hadn’t been hard to find. It’d been even easier to find with the obvious bloody trail leading up to the door where, of course, Cas had identified the markings as Satanic.
Then, because they’re all dumbasses, Sam, Dean, and Cas stepped into the shed, and Dean hasn’t seen his brother since.
The shed, which had appeared to be smaller than a regular motel room from the outside, turns out to have a humongous inside. There had been a trapdoor that led to a chute or something once they all stepped inside and Dean and Sam had gone down different sides.
(And yes, the only reason Cas stayed with Dean is because he was holding onto Dean’s jacket. Shut up.)
Then Dean had seen a figure in red running down whatever hallway they’d landed in and he’d taken off. No matter how fast he runs, the figure in red always seems to be one step ahead of him.
“Son of a bitch!” he finally yells, hitting the wall with the side of his fist with frustration. “Sammy!”
Sam doesn’t respond.
Dean swears some more, his hands on his knees as he tries to catch his breath. Cas, as usual, is unaffected by everything that Dean is affected by, which is, as usual, infuriating.
Dean looks up, ready to snap at Cas for being useless when it comes to finding his brother or catching the figure in red, but he sees the figure in red peering back around the corner.
Oh.
This is a game of cat and mouse, and Dean’s not entirely confident he’s not the mouse.
“What do you want, you bitch?” he wheezes, standing up and groaning. He’s getting too old for this.
The figure in red flicks its head and for the first time Dean hears his brother’s voice.
“Dean!” It sounds to be coming from behind the red figure.
“Sammy!” Dean bellows, cursing internally again before starting to jog again. He’s not entirely sure he wants to reach where the figure in red is leading him, but there’s also the chance that his brother is in trouble.
A giggle floats down the corridor and the figure in red whips away.
Dean is lost. Definitely. He’s lost count of the rights and the lefts he’s taken. It’s at least four more turns before he gets a better glimpse of the figure in red as the hallway opens up into a massive chamber with at least five other hallway entrances.
Basically, this was a maze. A massive underground maze. And now Sam, Dean, and Cas are in the middle of it.
“Sammy!” Dean barks when he sees his brother on the opposite side of the room. He doesn’t look injured, but still—“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Dean,” Sam replies. “You’re fine, right? And you, Cas?”
Both men nod their heads.
The figure in red lowers its hood and Dean recognizes who it is.
Because of course it’s Rowena.
“What are you doing here?” he spits. Witches. “Why’d you lead us in a wild goose chase in a maze? Wait—you’re the reason for all the mutilations, aren’t you?”
“Of course,” the witch laughs. “But don’t worry. They’re all alive, correct? I left them at the hospital after retrieving what I wanted from them.” She winks over her shoulder at Sam. “You boys must be rubbing off on me.”
“So this was all for a spell?” Dean asks, moving to step forward but stopping as if he’s been tethered to a brick wall. He looks back and sees that Cas has a hold of the back of his jacket. He shrugs. It’s a valid point; Rowena is a wild card if they’ve ever met one. It’s better to be cautious and not get within reach of her to hex them or spew bodily fluids.
“Yes,” Rowena answers briskly. “I need to pop into another dimension quickly and get another ingredient for a spell I’m working on that will help you with whatever apocalypse the three of you have started.”
Dean scowls. Well, yes, there is (but only sort of) a looming apocalypse on the horizon, but she wasn’t supposed to know about that. “Why? What’s in it for you?”
“Your enemies have a price on my head,” she replies. “While you three seem to have a knack for escaping the clutches of death, I’d prefer not to have to create another charm to prevent me from the unpleasant sensation. It can be quite painful to die, even if I survive.”
Dean looks at Sam as the witch starts to chant, and he shrugs. He’s always had a soft spot for the witch, but Dean doesn’t know why. He takes small solace in the fact that Sam’s here, and if worst comes to worst he’ll be the one to end the witch once and for all. Somehow.
“Then why did you lure us down this labyrinth?” Cas asks.
Rowena says a final word and a crack splits the silence, followed by a white light that splits the air. “I have no idea what’s in this new dimension. I quite wanted protection, seeing as how our best interests align in this endeavor.”
Dean can’t argue with that sound logic. He examines what must be the portal suspiciously.
“That’s not any spell we’ve seen before,” Sam points out.
Rowena waves her hand airily. “I made a new one that’s much more convenient. No more pesky one-in-a-million ingredients. Just a few human body parts and some common herbs. Simple, if you’ve got enough talent. It’ll last for eight hours.” She winks at Sam. “Are you boys ready?”
“Hold on a sec,” Sam mutters. He fishes his phone out of his pocket. “Should probably give Jack a heads-up.” He scowls. “No service.”
“Great,” Dean gripes. Poor kid’s gonna be confused and worried for a full day before they get back. “Let’s make this trip as quick as possible, then.”
Cas grips Dean’s hand (shut up, Sam) and Sam grabs the hem of Dean’s jacket as Dean uses his free hand to grip the shoulder of Sam’s jacket. No more taking any chances of going down different chutes. In a line, they follow Rowena into the blinding light...
And into an empty room.
Sam spins on his heel, taking in the area, and Dean looks up. A massive steel chandelier hangs from the ceiling of what must be a mansion, judging by the size of the foyer and the many rooms that look to branch off of it.
“Ah, civilization,” Rowena says, pleased. She straightens her already-straight dress and pats her hair. “Perfect.”
“Where are we?” Cas asks, frowning. “I can’t sense any of my brothers and sisters.”
“We must have landed in a universe without heaven,” Sam exhales. “Remember Jared Padalecki? And Supernatural?”
“And Jensen Ackles,” Dean acknowledges, nodding. “Sorry, Cas, but looks like you’re outta grace for the moment.”
Cas looks at his hands, frowning.
Something hurtles through the air and buries itself into Cas’s chest. A knife. Fuck. Will that hurt him, even though he’s an angel, but he doesn’t have any powers here, but does that just apply to grace and wings or—
“Sam, is he okay?” Dean asks tersely, holding up his gun in the direction the knife had come from. He sees a pair of eyes glint and adjusts accordingly.
Something flashes behind him and the clicking of a safety near his ear makes Dean’s blood run cold.
“Don’t even try it,” Sam growls. Dean knows that he’s got his gun pointed at whoever’s pointing one at him.
“Or what?” the person hisses through gritted teeth. “You’ll shoot me?”
“Yes,” Sam replies resolutely. It must surprise him.
“I’m fine,” Cas groans, on the ground and not sounding very fine. “I suppose our questions were answered. I am still unable to be killed except by my—”
“Shh,” Dean hisses, not wanting to give their attackers any ideas.
“We must have gotten off on the wrong foot,” Rowena calls, her voice lilting in the dusty air. “We didn’t mean to end up in your house.”
“Really?” an unfamiliar voice snarls behind Dean. “What’s that light?”
“What are they talking about, Five?” a deep, grating voice asks.
“Does it look like I know?” the voice snaps back. It’s the voice of a kid. “They came through a light in the middle of our foyer. Do I have any experience with that sort of stuff?”
“Uh... yes,” another person points out.
“Fair enough,” the kid admits.
“Sam, is there a preteen holding a gun to my head right now?” Dean asks, rolling his eyes.
Sam can’t keep the snicker out of his voice, even though he knows this is a serious situation. “Yep.”
“Look,” Dean starts, “I’m sure if we all put down our weapons, we can sort something out.”
The preteen snorts. “I’m not about to compromise to some robbers breaking into our house.”
“Buddy, you’re not gonna be involved in the conversation,” Sam retorts. “The adults are gonna handle this one.”
Cas sighs. There’s movement at Dean’s feet—undoubtedly he’s standing up—and two gunshots.
Dean winces.
“Fine, fine,” Cas grumbles. Dean whirls just in time to see Sam knock the gun out of the stunned preteen boy’s hands.
“What the hell are you?” the boy whispers.
“Five?” a new voice asks. “What the hell is going on?”
Something flashes and Dean chances a look behind himself. Fuck. It’s Jack, stumbling out of the portal. How he’d known to go inside the shed, find the middle of the maze, and jump through the portal, Dean doesn’t know.
“Hello!” Jack beams at his three dads and then at the six people trickling into the room. “It’s nice to meet you!”
“He’s got powers too!” a man holding a throwing knife marvels. Undoubtedly he’s the one that threw it at Cas’s chest. “But he’s not our age.”
“Like I said,” Dean repeats. “I’m sure we can work something out.”
~~~~
Rowena left the boys to deal with the five adults and one bloodthirsty preteen, citing the need to find whatever ingredient that exists in this universe and not in their own.
There’s a monstrous man called Luther (who is very white), and the man dressed in black leather that had thrown a knife at Cas is called Diego (who is definitely not white, probably Mexican). He marvels at how Cas survived the knife to the chest as well as two bullet wounds, even going so far as insisting that he take off his shirt to prove he doesn’t have a bulletproof vest on.
Dean hadn’t liked them all marveling over the angel’s surprisingly toned chest.
Then there’s a lady named Allison (who is African-American) and another lady called Vanya (who is white). The preteen boy is called Five, and he’s definitely at least part not-Caucasian.
And they all claim to be siblings.
Dean puzzles over that for five seconds before remembering that adoption is a thing. The jump to another reality must have scrambled his brains again.
“This is my older brother, Dean,” Sam introduces. “This is Cas, Dean’s boyfr—”
Cas clears his throat. He knows that Dean still isn’t comfortable with people knowing about their... relationship.
“Well, he’s an angel. And this is our son, Jack, who is half-archangel,” Sam finishes.
“He’s... all three of you’s son?” Vanya asks, and, despite the bad grammar, Sam nods.
“Adopted,” Dean adds. “Technically, he’s Lucifer’s son. But Lucifer’s a major dick that tortured my brother for about a thousand years, and the kid isn’t stupid, so he stays with us.”
Jack preens at being called not stupid, which is kind of a low bar. Maybe Dean should compliment the kid more. No, scratch that, he should definitely compliment the kid more. God knows Dean would’ve liked a little more appreciation for taking care of Sammy when he was younger from John. “I killed Lucifer for hurting Sam,” he adds angelically. “He wasn’t very nice.”
Sam reaches out and pats Jack’s knee. “We’re all very proud of you, Jack.”
“Lucifer?” Luther repeats. “Uh...”
“Oh, yeah,” Dean adds. “You guys don’t have God in this universe.”
“We have Christianity,” Allison says, a little defensively.
“Wait,” Sam yelps. “He’s—” He points at Five, who is definitely at the most fifteen years old, and currently drinking a margarita. Judging by the ingredients on the counter, it is most definitely not non-alcoholic.
“That’s a long story,” Diego sighs.
“We could take turns?” Jack suggests.
~~~~
At the end of it, everyone but Jack, who opts for a glass of chocolate milk, is drinking alcohol. Apparently his powers are still intact in this universe, maybe because he’s as powerful or more so than an archangel. That’s useful to know.
“So you’re all the same age,” Sam says for the third time. “Except for the kid, who is not actually a kid.”
Five nods. “58.”
“But for most of those years he was completely isolated and therefore not any more mature than a regular fifteen-year-old kid, only more murderous,” someone says singsong behind them. Dean jumps.
Five scowls. “That is so not true, asshole—”
“Ah, yes,” Allison sighs. “This is Klaus.”
“It is definitely true,” Klaus argues back, taking the margarita out of Five’s hands and drinking the rest of it in one gulp. “He’s feral. All teenage boys are feral.”
“He’s also your sibling?” Cas checks.
“Don’t ask about his power,” Diego mutters. “It’s a sensitive topic.”
“I am not feral!” Five sputters. With a flash of blue light, he disappears and reappears in front of Klaus, hands on his hips.
“Uh-huh,” Klaus nods, sidestepping him. “How could you have grown up without other people?”
“I had Dolores!” Five snarls, pulling a handgun out of his pocket and pointing it at his brother. Klaus seems unbothered. He pulls two bottles of whiskey from the shelf of alcohol and tosses the other behind his back. Five disappears and reappears, catching the bottle with a huff and stowing the gun. Apparently all is forgiven.
“Ah...” Allison starts, looking pained. “I suppose it’s no use to remind you that we don’t point guns at our siblings.”
“This is a regular occurrence, yes?” Castiel asks.
“Unfortunately,” Vanya answers, wearing an identical expression of consternation.
Cas points at Dean. “You shouldn’t be too worried. Sam and Dean have died multiple times. One time Sam even killed him. They turned out fine.”
Sam winces at that comment.
“It’s fine, Sam,” Dean says automatically. He doesn’t even remember Sam killing him during that one time Gabriel decided to be an even bigger dick than normal. “Don’t even remember it.”
“I’m sorry, what?” Five blurts out, staring at the grown men with new respect.
“They never even agree to not bring weapons into the kitchen,” Cas continues.
“I know, right?” Allison exclaims. “Like, we’re all eating breakfast! Don’t clean your knives, Diego!” She gives her brother the stink eye.
“What if something happens?” Diego and Dean retort back in unison. They exchange startled looks.
“One time,” Jack adds, “Dean shot me in the back in a grocery store.” He then goes back to drinking his chocolate milk, content to listen to the conversation.
Luther opens his mouth to further ask about that statement but his younger/older sibling interrupts him. “No, no, I want to hear more about coming back to life,” Five insists, draping himself over a chair.
“Yeah,” Luther agrees, sending an uneasy look in Jack’s direction when the boy snaps his fingers and his glass of chocolate milk fills itself. “So Sam dies, and Dean sells his soul to bring him back. Then Dean dies and goes to hell, Cas saves him, and you’ve been saving the world ever since?”
Sam shrugs. “More or less.”
“And there’s another apocalypse,” Vanya says slowly. “And you’re stopping it by coming to our universe.”
Dean shrugs. “Rowena more or less made it so we had no choice.” He glances into the foyer, where the white light of the portal doesn’t waver.
Vanya nods and then nudges Diego with her elbow. Her brother groans and rolls his eyes but leans forward and holds a hand out to Cas. “Sorry for stabbing you, man. No hard feelings?”
Cas takes his hand, a mysterious half-smile playing on his lips. “Of course.”
Vanya clears her throat. “Five, apologize for shooting Castiel or I’m taking your gun.”
Five snorts. “So? I’ve got more.”
“How many more?” Luther asks.
“Not telling.”
“I heard a rumor,” Allison says teasingly, “that you told us how many guns you have.”
“Fifteen,” Five says promptly, then he scowls. “Bitch. I’m still not giving you them. Get your own.”
Klaus says out of the blue, “No, I will not!” He flushes when everyone turns to look at him. “Ben told me to tell Diego to throw a knife at Jack since it won’t hurt him either.”
Diego brightens at the idea and Sam leaps off of the couch, positioning himself between the murderous superpowered human and the half-archangel. “We still don’t know why the angel’s powers are working while there’s no heaven,” he says firmly. “We’re not risking any more injuries.”
“I could just cut him,” Diego wheedles. “Just to see if it makes a cut and then it heals or if nothing happens. Come on. We don’t know how angels work.”
Jack shrugs and Dean barks, “We’re not cutting Jack for a science experiment!”
Klaus claps. “We should do science experiments!” as if he hadn’t heard Dean at all.
And that is how Dean finds himself in the courtyard of the Umbrella Academy mansion, torn between cheering for Cas and Luther as they compete to see who can lift the largest weight.
“It’s definitely going to be Cas,” Sam mutters. The Winchester brothers stand side-by-side in identical poses as they assess the experiments.
“Hey!” Allison yelps. “Luther, don’t you dare pick up my car! Dean, don’t encourage them!” The half-gorilla man sends her a sheepish look and shrugs at Cas.
Dean holds up his hands. “Like I can control them, lady.”
Allison rolls her eyes. “Castiel, come over here real quick.”
Well, that’s done for the day, Dean supposes. He turns around to see Jack with a blindfold over his eyes disappearing and reappearing, apparently playing tag with Five while both boys use their teleportation powers.
A bright smile on his face, Jack disappears before Five’s even left and appears on top of the boy, sending both ageless kids tumbling to the ground, giggling.
“Scary,” Luther mutters at Dean’s side. “Never seen Five laugh before.”
Dean looks at him out of the corner of his eye. “You ever been able to not pick something up?”
“I’ve never tried a house or something like that, obviously,” Luther admits, rubbing his chin. “But I’ve never really found something that I haven’t been able to lift.”
“That’s so cool,” Dean admits, shaking his head.
“Yo, Winchester!” Diego yells, waving as both Winchesters whip their heads around. “Target practice!”
“You say you can’t miss a target, huh?” Sam asks, smirking.
Diego nods.
“Well, we can do that without having a superpower,” Dean brags, all in good nature of course, and the competition is on.
When it’s discovered that Sam and Dean really are as good as Diego from years of practice, they call Jack over to move the targets midair. This is where Diego smirks, as Sam and Dean do miss a few and he misses none, even when his knives flip over themselves, zip back and forth, and defy the laws of gravity as they fly through the air.
“I’m going to use the restroom,” Dean announces at one point. “Where—”
“Walk straight, go up the stairs, take your first left,” Luther directs. He claps Dean on the shoulder and sends him stumbling away, hissing as he rubs his shoulder. “Uh, sorry.”
Dean really didn’t mean to eavesdrop. He’s two steps up when he hears Castiel’s voice and realizes he’d gone inside and not come back out. Curious now, he follows the voices down a staircase and flattens himself against the wall near the doorway of what must be the kitchen, judging by the smell of food inside the room.
“—determined to throw himself into the line of fire,” Cas gripes.
“I know, right?” Vanya exclaims. “Five seems to think he’s invincible or something.”
“One time he told me he was fine after getting stabbed because he’s gotten stabbed before!”
Allison giggles. “Like you can build up an immunity to stab wounds.”
“It’s quite hard to protect someone with the survival instincts of a squirrel on crack cocaine,” Cas remarks. Dean’s face colors when he realizes that he’s walked in on a gossip session consisting of his boyfriend and the two exasperated siblings of some weird-ass people.
“He loves you though, right?” Allison asks. “I could see it in the way he looked at you.”
Dean’s face gets even hotter. He’s not a big fan of the ‘L’ word.
“We have a profound bond,” Cas replies simply. That’s always been enough for their relationship.
Dean sneaks back up the stairs, hoping they don’t hear his footsteps. When he reaches the foyer, Rowena steps into the building, looking entirely too pleased with herself.
“Did you get it?” he asks gruffly.
Rowena smiles. “Of course I did. Are you ready to go?”
“Uh...” Dean knows he has to get back to his universe. He has a responsibility to save the world, of course. But it was enjoyable to hear about other people’s crazy lives and be able to relax. He settles for gesturing for her to follow and he leads her out to the courtyard.
He and Rowena watch as Sam tries frantically to stop Five from cutting Jack’s arm, even as Jack holds his arm out and holds him in place.
“I’m fine,” Jack insists. “See?” Five pokes his skin with the tip of the knife, marveling when the skin opens but no blood runs out and it knits itself back together in mere seconds.
“That’s so cool,” Diego breathes, shaking his head.
“Hey!” Dean barks, making all the spectators jump. “What did I say? Did I say no cutting Jack open or did I say yes cutting Jack open?”
Sheepishly, Jack lets Sam go and shrugs at Five. “Is it time for us to go already, Miss Rowena?”
“I’m sorry, Jack, but yes,” she answers.
Every person in the courtyard slumps a little bit.
“Did I hear Rowena?” Cas asks behind Dean, making him jump. “Oh. I supposed it was you. Our time is nearly running out.”
“You guys are leaving?” Vanya asks, visibly disappointed.
“We have an apocalypse to prevent,” Sam explains, gesturing for Jack to follow him. Jack misunderstands the signal and takes Sam’s outstretched hand, startling him—but in a good way.
Rowena winks at the disappointed Five. “Yes, but once we’ve finished saving the world for the umpteenth time I don’t think it’ll be too hard to come visit again.”
Diego brightens. “And we can stab the angels more!”
“NO!”
~~~~
“Ugh, I’m bored,” Five gripes, throwing himself backwards on the couch. “There’s nothing to do. No one to kill.” Disappointingly, the Temps Commission has stopped sending more agents after Five, probably realizing he thinks of them merely as dummies to practice his murder skills on.
“You could do your schoolwork,” Klaus informs him. Both brothers make faces immediately. “That was Ben,” he says hastily. “Not me. Don’t do your schoolwork.”
“Wasn’t going to anyway, but thanks,” Five grunts. Maybe if all the blood flow goes to his head he’ll pass out. That’d be a fun way to pass the time.
A loud crack echoes through the mansion, almost like a gunshot, and Five topples off the couch.
“Hello!” someone calls out. “Is anybody home?”
A wide smile stretches across Five’s face. Finally. Someone to kill that can’t die.
“The Winchesters are back!”
ALSO HIS HAIR IS A BIT FLUFFY! GOOD! IT LOOKS GOOD!
"I don't think we can ever be what we were"
this feels Real and I HATE it
and they split up with a SHOT OF THE LAMP
god the glass is chewy tonight
1. God+Disillusionment. Ok here's the thing: the whole scene where Lucifer didn't even have to do much to convince Nick? I think? to go against God feels important. Like it feels as if God has abandoned us, and we want to get back at him. Absent Father narrative, mixed with a bit of ye old exceptionalism(you're all mighty and all powerful, why didn't you help me). It...obviously I don't know who's idea it was to go this way, or what lens they were viewing this through specifically, but that convincing(and what Nick believed so he could let himself be convinced) felt important both in the context(vague 2009, after the crash) and in the story. I feel like this theme will show up later.
2. clever Dean. Dean got like three clever moments this episode, and a good pep talk. And I really like the trade off! The "let's not think about it until it blows over I'm totally fine ahaha" fucks him up when it comes time to deal with his relationship with his brother, but this desire to move forward(and the actual intelligence to think ahead like damn) helped them actually get to places. and at the end, he does a pep talk! he's learned how people work a bit! like the nuance and the showing off his good skills makes me happy.
3. lucifer played straight. So I realize this came out like...a decade before the Lucifer show. but having a Lucifer that has quiet daddy issues and have them be played entirely straight wasn't something I thought would be as compelling as it was. The actress for Lucifer was very good, which probably helped, but to have Lucifer be Sincere(seeming) and actually believe in his point was interesting and a bit refreshing
also i liked that the name was recognized, feels more realistic
4. probably need a callout. Like I get it, they're the main heroes, they did their best, but they DEFINITELY needed a call out or at least a chat that wasn't the End of the episode. They did their best, I get not siding with the angels, but SOMETHING has to be done. You can't build the "everything is shit" narrative and say idk we're probably gonna fix it lol in the framing device you have set up. Where's ur power fantasy? what are you gonna do with him?
5. Bobby. Listen, I love Bobby. I can tell how you know it's just a Bit off. And while they did need a bit of chewing out, I do appreciate how Bobby's like "priority one, make sure they know I'm not gonna leave" like it makes him a good dad, if a not great hunter, and I really like that. I like how Bobby's weak spot is surrogate kids, that makes me happy.
7. the confrontation. Ok listen, I need that in there. The framing(like I said, they're framing Dean as a bit taller than they would in later seasons(possibly as writers shift their focus from Sam to Dean, a trend that seems to Keep Going)), it puts him a bit higher. The dialogue felt real, like to the point of, whether or not it was accurate to the story or not, it felt like two real family members talking. Like "I can't get rid of you, but we can't be what we were?" heartbreaking. I love glass. And yeah, that final shot of Dean walking away from Sam is pretty obvious HOWEVER Dean is shot with a lamp. It either means Cas or just the angels in general, and whether that's a "he's the michael sword and Sam's lucifer(invoked in this convo)" type thing or a "cas is on Dean's side, and as Cas is in the right so is Dean" type thing, it's Interesting to look at. And it's SUPER deliberate, this cANNOT have been done on accident.
8. Second Meg supremacy, first Ruby supremacy
ighty night night time to go pry the kitty off of me
Title: Fatal Attraction (Part 15.)
Character(s): Ike Evans and Ben Diamond Summary: Ike finally loses it. Word Count: 1,440 Warning: Violence! Author’s Note: FINALLY IKE SHOWS BEN WHAT’S UP... Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Ben looked at Ike, sitting across from him at his desk. They were sitting in his study, and the silence was so eerie that Ike felt uncomfortable. For once, he wasn’t sure how tonight was going to end, but he just hoped that Jack Klein stuck by his word. All he needed was a confession from Ben and they would burst into the mansion without any problem.
“What do you want, Ben?” Ike asked, interrupting the silence.
“I think you and I both know the answer to that, Isaac.”
“It seems that we don’t, so please enlighten me.”
Ben narrowed his eyes, leaning forward. “Have you been seeing any women recently, Isaac? I know since your wife’s death—”
“Keep my wife out of this,” Ike glared.
“Touchy touchy,” he laughed. “Anyway, answer the question.”
“No. I haven’t been with anyone. Why are you so concerned about love life, Ben?”
“I think I have someone you may be interested in,” he grinned.
“And who’s that?” Ike asked, staring at him with narrowed eyes.
Ben glanced over to Al who was standing nearby and gave a subtle nod. Without hesitation, Ike fell over when he felt Al’s fist connect with his jaw. The contact was enough to cause a throbbing sensation to run across his jawline and up to his cheek.
Ike looked up at Ben, feeling Al’s hands keep Ike kneeling down. “What the hell do you want, Ben?!”
Ben rounded his desk and immediately gripped Ike’s chin roughly. He stared into the other man’s eyes, and Ike noticed the clear anger in Ben’s orbs.
“You didn’t think I’d find out that you’re fucking my wife, Isaac? Do you really think I’m that naïve?” Ben glared, delivering a sharp slap across Ike’s cheek.
Ike coughed, staring up at Ben. He remained quiet, his lip now fully busted open as the blood leaked down his chin.
“Answer me!” Ben yelled. “Were you fucking my wife?!” Another hit came across Ike’s jaw, causing a cut to open across his cheekbone.
“I have nothing to say to you, Ben…” Ike replied. “Nothing at all…”
Ben fumed, though, he maintained his grin and paced back and forth in front of Ike. “Diana’s pregnant, too. But you knew that, didn’t you, Isaac? After I’m done with you, I’m going to make sure she delivers that baby and when that’s done with, I’m going to kill her and make you watch.”
Ike glared, tightening his jaw. His hands curled into fists, and Ike began breathing heavily with anger running in his veins. “You will not touch her anymore, Ben. She loves me,” Ike declared.”
Ben narrowed his eyes. He grabbed the gun that was tucked into his pants at his back and hit Ike across the cheek with the end of it. Ike fell to his side, gripping his face. He could feel the cuts splitting open and the constant throbbing.
“Yet, she’s married to me,” Ben laughed.
“But she thinks about me when she’s with you, Ben,” Ike coughed, spitting blood to the side. “I am done doing favors for you, Ben.”
“Oh, we are not done, Isaac,” Ben grinned. “Not one bit.”
Ike breathed heavily, standing up carefully. Al stepped forward, but Ben shook his head and allowed Ike to stand at full height. “If you aren’t going to kill me, Ben, that I must let you know that Diana wants to be with me. You’re just holding her back.”
Ben cocked the gun, pointing it directly at Ike’s forehead. “She loves me! She belongs to me!”
Ike chuckled, stepping forward until the gun rested against his skin. “You’re not going to kill me, Ben. Without me, the Miramar Playa will plummet, and that means that you’ll be losing money. Tons of it.”
“You’re right, but that doesn’t mean I won’t kill Diana. I will chop off every single part of her body and then I’m going to serve her goddamn head on a platter to you, Isaac. You better hope that the baby she is carrying is a boy,” Ben threatened. “Or else.”
“Or else what?” Ike glared.
“Want to know why my other two wives died, Isaac? It’s honestly a coincidence,” he laughed. “If you want to call it that.”
“Your other two wives died in labor. How ironic. But what is different about them and Diana is that Diana is much stronger than you think, Ben,” Ike retaliated.
“Not if I have anything to do about it like my other wives,” Ben smiled wickedly. He set the gun on the table behind him and looked at Ike, staring into his eyes. “You’re right… I won’t kill you, Isaac.”
“What the fuck does that mean, Ben?” he asked.
Ben chuckled, leaning back against the edge of his desk. Al glanced between the two and grinned, rubbing his knuckles gently. “It means when I found out that our babies were going to be girls, I had to end them. You see, I need a boy. I need someone to carry on my legacy when I’m gone. A woman wouldn’t be able to do what I do, Isaac. So, they had to go. Plus, they were very whine. It was annoying.”
Ike widened his eyes, taking a step back. “Y—You killed your past two wives because they couldn’t give you a boy?”
Ben smiled, “They call me The Butcher for a reason, Isaac.”
“You sonofabitch!” Ike tackled Ben to the floor, not caring whether or not Al would have time to retrieve the gun. He couldn’t hold his anger in any longer.
Every punch he threw at Ben was not only for the beatings Diana had to endure, but also the innocent deaths of his past wives and children. It was sickening, and Ike had lost control that he didn’t notice the police entering the study.
Jack Klein was the one to gently pull Ike off an unconscious Ben. He put his hands up in the air and Ike calmed down, tears stinging his eyes as his knuckles were throbbing along with his face.
“We got him, Ike…” Klein said. “We got him.”
Ike tightened his jaw and pulled Ben up from the collar of his shirt. He held him against the wall and slapped him awake, staring into the eyes of the man that had caused him so much trouble in the past few years.
“Wake up, Ben.”
“Ike—” Klein called, “Hurry it up.”
Ben awoke with a grunt, opening his eyes to look at Ike. He chuckled, coughing up blood. “You can’t keep me in jail forever, Isaac… You forget that I have people on the inside…”
“You just confessed to killing two of your pregnant wives, Ben. Your life is ruined and you won’t ever see life past jail,” Ike spat.
Ben glared, “Fuck you, Isaac.”
“I will be doing that with your newly single ex-wife, Diana,” Ike grinned. “You didn’t win this time, Ben. Rot in fucking jail, asshole.” Ike pushed him roughly into Jack Klein who handcuffed him, tightening the cuffs around Ben’s wrists.
“Ike—”
“You wanted Ben Diamond… You got Ben Diamond,” Ike interrupted.
Klein nodded, shaking his head. “Thank you. Be careful from now on. You did me a favor, but I won’t let anything else slide,” he threatened.
Ike smiled, “I’ve got a new partner and we’re starting fresh, Klein. You can have my word that I won’t deal with business the way I have with Ben.”
The two walked out into the main yard of Ben’s mansion. Just before Ben was put into the back of the police car, he looked over to Ike and grinned. “Keep my wife safe for me.”
“She’s not your wife. Not anymore. And guess what, Ben?” Ike chuckled.
“What?”
“Guess who gets all of your money?”
The door shut in Ben’s face before he had the chance to reply, but Ike could sense the anger in the man’s eyes as he yelled and threw a fit in the back of the police car. Ike turned to Jack Klein and nodded once, “Give him hell.”
“Oh, believe me, Ike… I will.”
“Good. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have someone I need to meet with…” Ike said.
“Of course, Ike. I hope we don’t cross paths unless I go to your hotel for a vacation.”
“Whatever you need, Klein, I will accommodate.”
Klein smiled, shaking the other man’s hand. “Thank you, Ike. Have a good night. We can all sleep a bit better now that Ben Diamond is in police custody. He’s going to spend the rest of his life in jail. I can guarantee you that.”
SPN x Iron Man
CHARACTERS: Dean Winchester, reader!Stark daughter, Sam, Tony, Bobby (mentioned)
WARNING: None I guess?
WORD COUNT: 1,901 (according to Wattpad)
SUMMARY: You went for a drink at a bar and Dean came to join you. Your friendship with Dean started from there.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: I like this, you know. I hope you like this, too :) You can read more Winchester fanfiction on my Wattpad account.
You just finished one of your shortest mission, but you didn’t go straight back to your home because you know your father was there. The one who wants you to be like him; the one who makes you turn like him. You hated to see that face so much even though you think you’ve started to accept your life. But the truth is, you don’t because if you do, you won’t try to be far from your family.
So you spend your time at the nearest local bar in New York. Your home, the Avengers Tower, was only a few minutes ride. You want to be here until your father goes to sleep, and he usually does that around 5 in the morning because of his insomnia and panic attack. But you don’t care. If he hadn’t asleep when you’re home, he was already tired that your chance of being nagged is thin.
Glass after glass, but you control yourself from drinking too much because you don’t want to get drunk, actually. You still felt a little tipsy, but you can still think straight and drive like a fully-sober person home. You stared at the many alcohols behind the counter against the wall and thinking that your father had a lot of expensive ones that taste better than what you’re drinking. But again, you don’t care. You’ve drink a water that tasted like piss, so what else a bad alcohol could make you except wince?
It was 12 in the midnight though the bar was still bright and noisy. You continued to drink and think about the lives you could have saved including yours if your father didn’t force you to be in the Avengers. Even though the Avengers were good friends of yours, but you never feel good to kill people, innocent or not.
One man entered the bar steadily, but his face showed a thousand problems he’s been facing. Of course, you weren’t watching him while he was walking deeper into the bar and took a seat one gap beside you and ordered a whiskey from the bartender. While waiting for his drink, he had his head in his hands, sighing heavily.
You turned, not really interested in his problems because you have your own unsolved problems on your shoulders, but that’s usually what people in the bar do, and you’ve spent your time at bars countless of times that you started to feel like it’s your job too to talk to people. At least, it helps him to a little. After all, most people who came to the bar have the same issues, so why not?
“Hey,” you called. The man looked up to you, letting go of his head, his short hair stuck in every direction, but he still looked good. “Rough night?”
“Ngh,” he muttered, turning to the bartender who is handing him his whiskey, thanking him.
“Let me guess,” you tilted your head, giving him a side look. “A fight with your wife?”
He raised his eyebrows, his hand reaching the bottle of whiskey he ordered. “Do I look like I’m married to you?” The man took a sip, not looking at you.
No, of course, you don’t, is what you wanted to say because you know how to read people very well. During your training, reading people is one of the core subject and you cannot fail. But here, you cannot just say what you wanted to say because they would think you’re creepy, so, instead, you lied to the person you’re talking to.
“I don’t know.” You shrugged. “You tell me.”
“It’s...complicated.”
“Try me.”
The man beside you chuckled softly and smirked. It was sweet and charming, like you’re seeing a different person when he’s smiling. “Trust me, sweetheart, you won’t understand.”
“Well,” you started, “I’ve had couple of reasons of why I’m here, too. And not feeling like being at home is one of them.”
“You think that would make me open up to you?”
“No,” you answered, being hard-to-get, being on your spy character. Sometimes, you can’t help it. Everywhere you go, you’d act like you’re still on a mission. Maybe because you’ve never stopped going to missions since you’ve passed your training level and your father never told you to stop. “I just feel like telling you. Because, you know, what else would we do if we’re going to spend the night here, right?”
“And why would you think I’d be staying here up late?”
“Because that’s why most people like you do,” you answered, this time honestly because you just know based on your experiences.
“And you don’t?”
“No.” You shook your head.
“So why you’re here?”
“Like I said, because I don’t feel like being at home at the moment.” You looked away, suddenly felt ashamed for having a broken family. Well, maybe people think that you have a perfect one, but to you, you don’t. You have a demanding father, over-work mother, friends only for missions. You don’t have real friends, who you would want to bring for shopping.
The man beside you stared at you as you drink. If a while ago, you were the one who wanted a conversation, but this time it was him who was wondering about you.
“Hey, you want to talk about it?” he offered his ears to you and he sounded genuine.
“Nah, I’m good.” You smiled up at him, glancing at the time on the wall behind the counter and saw that it was only 6 minutes passed.
“Okay,” the man said after a few seconds of analysing you. You know he felt bad for pushing you away just now, but you don’t actually care because you’re not good at feelings either. But, after a while, he spoke again.
“Have you ever felt like...being betrayed?”
You turned to him slowly, raising your eyebrows in confusion at him. You don’t know what makes him suddenly speaking with you again, but you go along with him. The time was slowly ticking by, and you started to feel drowsy, but you don’t want to go home or sleep at the hotel.
“Lots of times, to be honest,” you answered. “I’ve been surrounded with older people and they lie to me most of the times.”
“Huh. You must feel really bad.” The man took a sip.
“What, is this your first time of being betrayed?” You watched his reaction and when he didn’t wince with your question, you know his answer before he even answered it.
“No,” just like what you expected. “But this time’s lot more worse.”
“How worse?”
“Well,” he shrugged, thinking of where to began. “How about you just found out that your brother’s still alive and the second closest person to you knew, but never told you until a year later?”
You were actually speechless at that. Even being an agent, you never encountered something that bad. Your father had never faked his death even though lot of people want him dead. Your Avengers friends never faked their deaths even though they’re lost somewhere in the world. You guys always found each other back.
“Wondered why they did that to you?”
“They put the blame on me.”
“Well, I accidentally freed a murderer because my legs were injured with one of my teammate’s bullet and they blamed me,” you opened up unconsciously, but didn’t regret it all. Somehow, it felt good to finally let it out even though that person was a stranger. But, again, sometimes it’s easier to express to a stranger.
The man turned, staring at you. Both of your eyes locked as you gave him the look of honesty while he gave you the look of looking for the truth.
The man sighed. “They said they wanted the life.”
“What life?”
“Having a family?” He glanced at you. “No, I’m not married.” He showed up his fingers. “See, no ring. She was my old girlfriend and her son, I started to feel like my own now.”
“Isn’t that a good thing, that they want you to be happy? With the life you wanted?”
“Yeah, but- see, I don’t care if I have a family and know that my brother’s still alive and Bobby didn’t lie to me or any of them.” You took that Bobby guy was his second person that was close to him. “But- it’s one year. I grieved for my brother’s lost for one year and suddenly, after one year, he came back to my door and Bobby knew. And he didn’t look like he’s sorry!
“I seriously don’t know how to explain this shit.”
“You could never succeed to explain your feelings because words cannot describe.” Somehow, you two laughed at it. “None of my family faked their deaths, but I kinda get the same thing you’re facing. Kind of.”
“Really? How?”
“You know...going for a mission, being kidnapped and taken to somewhere you don’t even know?” you replied. None of you ever introduced yourselves properly, but you’re talking like you’ve known each other for years, because you don’t have to tell that man that’s you’re a special agent from the Avengers, but he looked like he gets it.
“Being locked up? You don’t have any communications there. They tortured you. They abused you. They made you think you’re worthless and that nobody remember you to save you. But somehow, we managed to track the lost person. I, myself, had been missing for months with no hope of living, but...yeah, I managed.”
“What job are you on again?” He frowned.
“An agent,” you answered without thinking twice. Maybe it’s in your blood that you like to say straight forward.
“An agent?” He raised his eyebrows, looking surprised. “An agent, like, the FBI?”
You chuckled at his guess. “I’m an Avenger.” And you don’t even care how people would treat you or think about you when they start to know who you are because you’re used to it. You’ve been an agent since you were young. Plus, being the daughter of Tony Stark, didn’t make you unknown.
“Hold on. You’re an Avenger?”
“That’s what I said.” You looked at him with no emotion. His reaction was what you expected, only he’s less freaky like he’s used with surprises.
“You mean, like, an Avenger Avenger? Like, Thor, Hulk, the Ir- Oh, man. I know who you are!” He brightened up at this. His eyes shone and his smile wide. He looked like he’s just gotten a good news from you. And the best part is that, he looked like he’s forgotten his problem when he’s smiling widely like a child.
You smiled, too, because you cannot resist his reaction.
“You’re (y/n) Stark! You’re Tony Stark’s daughter!”
“That I am.” You nodded your head, looking away and drink, suddenly shy.
“Wait, how are- what are- Gosh, I never think that I would meet you here. I mean, at a regular bar? I mean, aren’t you rich? Shouldn’t you be sitting at a luxury restaurant or something? With a date? I mean, you’re pretty. Don’t you have a boyfriend?”
“Well, trust me, when you’re an agent, you don’t want a partner because it risks his life.”
“I understand that, but you? Here?”
“Truth is, I don’t care,” you answered, not being slightly annoyed with the man beside you because, by only looking at his appearance, you know how he lives so he probably doesn’t know you at all. “I like being regular like this.”
“Wow! You’re not like your father, huh? Well, I am not like my father, too, even though I really want to be like him. I mean, hell, I dress like him.” He smiled.
“Well, I’m afraid we haven’t introduced ourselves properly.” He stuck out his hand. “I’m Dean. Dean Winchester.”
You smiled at him as well. “(Y/n) Stark.”
re soulless kyle
I think Kyle too would kind of have a period of like ‘am i… what broke in me?’ upon first losing his soul but not realizing that’s what changed. I could see him trying to push himself more into the things he normally likes, kind of like when you try a drug or something you get that tolerance so you have to try more to feel the same. Kyle trying to do more reckless shit to try and get that same rush. I think. Like there’d still be adrenaline, right? That’s just body shit. But it’s not… it doesn’t register as excitement for him anymore, it’s a lot more technical in his head, he can feel his energy’s up but that’s not him being excited, that’s just high adrenaline in his veins, it’s not the same feeling. The first time gil or ivan or ludwig are put in danger and he’s almost too confused about why he’s not more scared to actually step forward and do something. Dismissing it as his freezing up when one of the others step in to help and they have to ask why he didn’t do anything. Distantly says he’s sorry and asks if the other’s okay. It’s very weird that like kissing ivan or sleeping with him and such doesn’t have the same effect. It’s still great and all, to a point, but it’s also very much just the physical reactions versus anything else he used to also feel. On the bright side for ivan, i think the first time he and kyle sleep together after kyle loses his soul, like it’s rougher than usual and he’d prolly be more about that. But again, for kyle it’s from this mentality of like ‘oh well if i do this thing more or harder, that’ll clear past this tolerance or whatever and it’ll feel normal’. Except none of it works. Hey good thought: kyle going for a jog one morning as kyle does, sees a deer in some nearby woods, stops to take a picture of it because kyle taking pictures and looking at animals are like, those are two of his favorite things, but as he tries to line it up it’s just. This doesn’t fucking matter, y’know? No shot looks good because he judges a shot based on how it feels and this doesn’t feel like anything. It’s dumb and he hardly gives a shit when the deer spots him with his phone and takes off. That’s kind of the objective ‘i’m not how i used to be’ realization. Like he’s tried everything between risks and caring about his friends and taking pictures and seeing animals and nothing has worked and he kind of accepts at this point like. Okay well i guess this is just it, fuck the emotions i used to have? He wants to say this sucks, but it doesn’t even suck because he can’t process it sucking on an objective level.
Later on though, he does start to feel like, objectively, it doesn’t suck? The next time someone’s put in danger, we’ll say ludwig, it’s like a hostage thing, like stand back or we’ll kill him. And reluctantly ivan starts to back away and gilbert puts down his gun, but kyle kinda smirks like “really?” and snaps his gun forward and blasts the person right in the face. Once all the bad guys are dead, gilbert pulling kyle aside to be like what the fuck??? They could have killed him! you shot two inches away without really aiming, /you/ could have killed him! And Kyle is like, wholly dismissive. So you’re mad I saved your boyfriend’s life? Fine, don’t worry, I won’t do it again. And it’s not even really aggressive or offended gilbert doesn’t appreciate the work. Objectively, it’s kinda dumb that gilbert’s mad, but whatever, it literally doesn’t matter. He won’t do it again if it’s such a big deal, fine. Same with like, a situation that’s a risk to himself, He finds he’s better at those since like, before he joked about not being afraid of death but he was kind of a little afraid of death, especially as he started to gain more friends and thus reasons to not die. Here he really doesn’t care! One of them have to pull him out of the way from getting hurt and he doesn’t thank them, just says something like oh nice timing or something and moves on. He maybe regrets the friends thing, if only because yeah it’s kind of becoming exhausting dealing with these three without his feelings. Like it’s still his brother and his boyfriend and his friend, but when he sits out with ivan under the sky at night and ivan talks about the different stars and their names and different info about them, like kyle can remember himself before loving to hear this shit, loving to watch ivan just be fascinated by all this stuff. but now he has to bite his tongue a couple times to keep from asking ivan to just shut up for once in his fucking life. There’s definitely a couple of those scenes like with sam where kyle is talking to someone and would normally be sympathetic and lie to make them feel better but he’s blunt and tactless and it catches everyone overhearing from the group off guard. Gil trying to get a reaction out of kyle, asking him if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed or maybe some familial tease equivalent, but kyle’s dismissive and carries on with his day. Kyle’s also a little better at lore research. Like listening to ivan talk about space or something, there’s no purpose for that at the time, that doesn’t help him any, but at least with research he sees there’s a purpose and that helps fight the boredom more. it’s still not super interesting but still. Also like, him noticing once out of the blue that he hasn’t had a mood dip like. Once. this whole time, holy shit, can that happen? Can he be emotionally stable for like a whole x amount of time? No way. Like he doesn’t feel /joy/ any more, but he also hasn’t tried drinking himself into an early grave over guilt or feeling like a failure or something since then so like. Nice, add that to the pro column.
And when they figure it out, similarly a click of like ohhhh okay, cool. “And here i was thinking something was wrong with me.” met with gil snapping that that /is/ wrong, he’s missing his soul! “No no, i heard ‘em, yeah.” it immediately gives him an excuse so any issues he had before are gone because there’s no ‘why don’t i ____’ anymore it’s just ‘oh that’s what soul kyle liked, that makes sense.’ and he starts to consider more like ‘oh wow soul kyle would probably be sad i lost this, but not me kyle, fuck that trait!’ like, like you know when you get older and you think back to compare the traits you valued as a kid/teen and how you are now? like younger me was such a goody two shoes hero type, and way more emotive and everything, i’m 100% sure she’d be a little disappointed to see me the way i am now. but like. i’m disappointed remembering her so we’re even, fuck off past me, i like myself currently better than you liked yourself back then so who really won this game? anyway, that kinda shit. that ‘i recognize there’s a version of me who would be upset to see this go but that ain’t this version of me and this version of me feels better off without it’ “Feeling no joy? Soul Kyle would miss it, but on the other hand I haven’t been sad let alone emotionally devastated for like /a while/ so points for me.” something comes up in relation to a touchy subject like dead family or the mistakes he’s made and he just kinda shrugs and talks about it like it’s fine, and not even in the normal kyle “says it’s fine but very aggressively so obviously it’s not” way, like his reaction is bland and blank, it’s literally fine. If one of the others brings up famine or doug or anything like that, he gets all on edge and doesn’t want to talk about it normally, but he answers casually and calmly this time around, like they’re talking about a trip to the library he took earlier instead of that time he got his best friend from when he was younger killed just because he wanted to believe the demon using his body was okay so they could keep in contact while he kept hunting.
And speaking of doug, hey like um. soulless kyle and doug meeting back up for whatever reason? Soulless kyle probably on his own for something, maybe later trying to get away from the rest of the group who very much want to reunite him with his soul. For doug, probably some flashback of like the gang about to kill him but doug doing something that makes it so the thing isn’t going to actually kill him and then smoking back into the body, straightens out a broken arm or hand or something, corrects his snapped neck, quietly on his way. Who knows why he’d go back into that body rather than get a new one other than that’s the one the viewers saw him in and will connect him too. basically i just want doug planning to get revenge in the first moment he finds soulless kyle, doesn't realize in that initial moment that it's anything other than normal kyle. But kyle seeing him and not seeming to give a fuck, so you used my body to try and hurt my friends. It wasn’t great, but i’m not gonna hold a grudge over it, said kyle brown never before today. Not sure what the details on this would be, but basically i want soulless kyle 100% not angry at but also playing doug. Wasn’t actually lying, he’s not mad about that, but, on the other hand, him knowing the other 3 are on his tail and tricking doug into being a distraction for them to slow them down while he keeps moving. Like. soulless kyle sending a demon after his friends because like, they can probably handle him and even if they can’t, that’s 1-3 less person on his tail trying to stop him and put his soul back in him.
Also in reverse au, doug being the one to explain like, hey, putting ivan’s soul back in his chest could like kill him or shatter his mind or any number of things. I mean, I’ll happily /do/ that if you want and can get a hold of the soul, but like, you can’t get mad at /me/ if things go to shit.
Also also hey remember that time spn turned dean into a demon and instead of doing anything cool with that they just had him fuck some people and fight some people and whine or whatever. or crowley whined. someone whined a lot and it was dumb. Dean def dismissed his brother being in danger, that was.... something i guess. Like an actual demon- like darkness itself in a tattoo demonic and. Just gets into some fights and likes fucking people. That’s the same shit kyle does in possession au /after/ he’s been possessed by a lower level demonic creature already. Like cmon. Show dean torturing someone, show dean torturing a friend, you cowards. don’t make him a demon if you won’t fucking commit!
Okay here we go 3, 13, 15, 17, 46
Sorry it took us forever to answer this, anon! But here we go:
3. name three favorite writers
Steph: I was just going through the fics I’ve read the other day and I realized that the authors I have actually read more works from were: green_feelings @greenfeelings, stylinsoncity @alienproof and cherrystreet @cherrystreet, and I really like their stories very much (I cry thinking about Empty Skies, To the Ends of the Earth and 7 Up), so there we go. (AND ALRIGHT, YES, YOU ARE MY FAVE SYN, EVEN THO YOU HAVEN’T WRITTEN  MY BDAY FIC YET)
Syn: unbelievable you didn’t answer it was me steph go away and think about your life choices but know you’re mine either way  it will be a cold dead day in hell before i put anyone besides my absolute GODDESSES so i know this shit should be about larry but listen…….. Lightning on the Wave literally molded me as a person and if you like drarry you should YOU SHOULD read her work. it’s literally been 8 years and i’m still not over this Arc. also if you’re a slytherin? you should do it because of the sheer sly pride it oozes. lucius/narcisa is the GODDAMN BEST THING like they fight while they dance tango? honestly please do yourself a favor and read this i beg you. also harry is slytherin and has a twin but don’t get freaked out because of it i swear the connor thing is actually very interesting. anyway, then I have the love of my life Annie_D (scaramouche) because i’m still destiel trash  AS FUCK even if i don’t even watch spn anymore. about larry now……….. the first fic i ever read and that is still to this day one of my fav ones is Gods and Monsters by @mizzwilde and tbh i love y&b but i can’t belieb people sleep on gods and monsters so much HONESTLY PEOPLE (steph: YAS GODS AND MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!)
also VERY SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO EVERY WRITER OUT THERE DOING GOD’S WORK AND WRITING GIRL!DIRECTION I LOVE YOU (steph: I second that)
13. hardest character to write
Steph: I don’t know, I’m more used to writing only Harry and Louis and they are always somehow similar in my fics, I guess. But it’s been a little roller coaster of feelings to write them in IYEWBIL hahaha (syn: little roller coaster? YOU’VE CRIED TWICE ALREADY that’s an euphemism if i ever heard any)
Syn : i was talking about this with steph and tbh i struggle a bit with harry? i love his quirkiness and shit but i guess i kinda understand where louis comes from more
15. hardest verse to write
Steph: (I’m assuming this is verse as in a part of the fic and not verse as in universe, ‘cause then it would be ABO LOL) I don’t wanna say it was hard, because it flowed naturally, but the break up scene in ELTHDIM was very heavy. Also, Marcel appearing at Louis’ again after 2 years in the interludio: I cried writing that. Not that it was hard, but it was very sentimental. (if we’re talking about having a hard time writing anything, then I did have a hard time with writing my fic for the Potter Direction Exchange, but that’s a whole other thing). But I guess, the hardest thing for me to write is yet to come, so I’m bracing myself and people who are reading IYEWBIL should too lol
Syn: (but when have you ever written abo steph? (: (steph: i wouldn’t know ehehehehe)) fighting scenes are A BITCH and i don’t mean verbal fighting because i ace at those, i mean actual fighting punching and shit. don’t ask where this is coming from tho
17. favorite AU to write
Steph: So far I’ve written: a single parents au, a coffeeshop au, a fake relationship au and two hogwarts aus (Mistletoes & Wrackspurts Series and the one for the Potter Direction Exchange) and I think it’s because M&W has been the longest one, I’m having more fun writing it. But also the fake relationship au was great to write hahaha
Syn: HARRY POTTER AU HANDS DOWN because i live and breath hp and muggle!louis/wizard!harry is the best of both worlds HOW CAN I NOT DIG THAT but now i discovered a new love in writing my catwoman!au so i guess y’all should ask about those fighting scenes i guess
(steph: i hope you’re all ready for this catwoman!au, that’s all i’m gonna say)
46. share a scene of a story that you haven’t published yet
Steph: I don’t think I have any story written that I haven’t published? Syn has tons lol I’ll leave this one to her.
Syn: don’t expose me like that steph but yeah i do my draft has right now about 5 works in progress HAHA and yes one of those if your gift u cry baby
ok so er under the cut is a piece of my god-knows-when-will-come-but-i’m-currently-on-chapter-3-of-who-the-fuck-knows-how-many catwoman au in which yes harry styles is catwoman y’all know why exactly
also if there’s any dc fan out there please hmu cuz i’d love to have some help haha
Louis heard a small click, their earpiece connection turning off. He rolled his shoulders inside his uniform, suddenly wary of the silence echoing inside the empty store. Normally the black (and dark blue) of his Nightwing costume worked as a camouflage in his environment, much like Batman’s did as well, but he felt exposed inside the lighten up vault as he looked for anything that could help catch the bastard behind the 3 X’s. He took his time, checking the floor, the empty cabinets, the empty shelves, anything and everything. Still, nothing. So he went back to the door, analyzing the scratches there (he still couldn’t believe it, fucking scratches) with his gloved hand caressing them softly.
“Glad to see you admire my work.”
Louis quickly threw a batarang to where the deep, drawled out voice came from, taking his sticks out when he saw the silhouette had dodged his attack. He’d heard no one come in, where did the fucker come from? Fucker was silent, silent like…
He saw a movement come from his side as he exited the vault, blocking the punch with his forearm, getting kneeled in the stomach a second after, too surprised he was by the fast attack. He gasped and stepped backwards, raising his sticks to avoid being clawed - what the fuck, his brain registered in confusion - at, blocking every time, left, right, left, right, right, left, both, the clank of the claws against his shatterproof sticks echoing in the empty store. He was glad his mask had nightvision, otherwise he’d be even more susceptible to the attacks, his reflexes matching them and being able to hold his own in the darkened store, the streetlights weak, reflecting on the empty jewelry display around them, not enough to show much of the person trying to rip his face in two. Speaking of which, Louis concentrated, paying attention to the silhouette in front of him, narrowing his eyes to identify what-
His mistake. Between a block from his hand and another, Louis felt a kick in his stomach, strong enough to push him back into one of the glass tables that held jewelry before, the sound of shattering glass hiding his groan of pain. Fuck, that’d hurt. He blinked, a grimace from pain in his face as he tried to get himself up and look at what he was sure looked like-
A slick noise and then he was on the floor, pieces of glass dragging beneath him as he was pulled by his feet towards his attacker, who was suddenly looking down at him from above, faces inches apart, a smirk in place and black mask covering half of his face.
“Catwoman.”
Satisfied, he smiled bigger, maliciously, leaning down to lick Louis’ cheek. Louis turned his head in disgust, enough to recognize it was a long whip Catwoman secured in her hand and had used to lock his feet and drag him forward.
“Meow.” She whispered in his ear that was just in front of Catwoman’s face as he turned it more to the side. Louis used the distraction her smugness must be to punch her to the side, taking her out of top. She scuffled sideways, gracefully going back to her feet while Louis took the whip from out of his feet.
Then he took a moment to realize what was in front of him.
“You’re a man.”
“My, my, Nightwing, shouldn’t an agent of law and good know better than to designate gender to his comrades?” Catwoman teased, his (her?) voice deep, a small pout forming in his lips.
“You’re not a comrade.” Louis answered irritated, fucking pissed the fucker was teasing him after everything he’d put him through the last months.
Also, he’d licked him. Who even does that.
“No, I’m not.” Catwoman moved his hips slowly, as if he was preparing himself for an attack, as if he was having fun. “I am, however, a man.”
Louis hummed, twirling his sticks in his hands, watching every move the man made in front of him, waiting for the right moment to strike.
“Should I be calling you Catman, then? Instead of Catwoman?”
He scoffed, as if the notion was ridiculous. “Of course not. Catwoman is a title that was so gracefully bestowed upon me, why would I change it? Besides,” he stopped his moving, standing still - too still - in the middle of the floor. “I like how you say it.”
SPN 5x18: “Point of No Return”
Quite the interesting song choice. “The Man Upstairs” by Kay Starr.
Bummed out Zachariah at a bar.
“That’s all they care about upstairs, ain’t it? Results, results, results. They don’t know. They’re not down on the ground, in the mud, nose to nose with all you pig-filthy humans, am I right?”
“Absolute—filthy what?”
lmao, poor guy catching what Zachariah said.
Another gif I’d seen often without knowing what the context was.
Tumblr media
RIP Stuart and the bartender. Killed by Zachariah’s “boss”...whoever that is.
Dean-o.
Preparing to leave.
I”m trying to pause the screen to read this letter Dean is writing. I can make out the words “you’ll look after her” which is probably referring to Baby (tho I did initially think it was about Lisa, as he had told her last episode that “they” won’t get what they want from him without agreeing to something first...aka protection for her and Ben.) Also before that statement, it looks like Dean made a Back to the Future reference (which, of course he would) “Where we’re going, we don’t need  no roads”
He also mentions someone (or something?) being an “honorary Winchester in my book” and I hope he means Cas.
[After episode edit: Supernatural Wiki is awesome and provides a transcript to a good chunk of the letter. It confirms most of my guesses except the “honorary Winchester” is Bobby; I ain’t even mad about that.]
It was about to be sent to Bobby.
“It’s not too hard to figure out the stops on the Farewell Tour.” Well thank god Sam knows Dean so well.
“How could you do that?”
“How could I? All you’ve ever done is walk away.”
“And I was wrong. Every single time I did.”
“You know I have to stop you.”
“Yeah, well, you can try. Just remember: You’re not all hopped up on demon blood this time.”
Dean delivering some low blows here...and he’s just getting started.
Cas!
Who is phenomenally pissed and staring daggers at Dean.
Tumblr media
“But if Lucifer burns this mother down, and I coulda done something about it, guess what? That’s on me.” Huh, that’s still part of the reason Dean says yes to Michael in S13.
“You’re not my father. And you ain’t in my shoes.”
DEAN WINCHESTER, YOU TAKE THAT BACK IMMEDIATELY.
It would’ve been kinda hilarious if Bobby had shot Dean for that alone.
Tumblr media
“That’s the round I mean to put through my skull. Every morning, I look at it. I think, ‘Maybe today’s the day I flip the lights out.’ But I don’t do it. I never do it. You know why? Because I promised you I wouldn’t give up!”
:(
RIP 2 angels. Killed by Cas.
Tumblr media
Will the real Adam Milligan please rise?
Cas wards Adam.
My god, Adam sounds so much like Dean.
Whoomp, there it is. Adm was brought back to replace Dean as Michael's vessel.
Cas shading Dean, lol.
Tumblr media
“Why would they do this?”
“Maybe they’re desperate. Maybe they wrongly assumed Dean would be brave enough to withstand them.”
“Alright, you know what? Blow me, Cas.”
Adam even acts like Dean, whereas Ghoul!Adam was more like Sam...
“Please, just trust me. Give me some time.”
“Give me one good reason.”
“Because we’re blood.”
Yeah, that ain’t gonna cut it.
“No, John Winchester was some guy who took me to a baseball game once a year. I don't have a dad. So we may be blood, but we are not family. My mom is my family. And if I do my job, I get to see her again. So no offense, but she's the one I give a rat's ass about, not you.”
Dude, it’s not their fault they never found out about you.
Jeez, what a dick.
Not that easy to escape, pal.
“The one thing worse than seeing dad once a year was seeing him all year.”
“Do you know how full of crap you are?”
“What?”
“Really. You see, it was me and it was my mom. That's it. She worked the graveyard shift at the hospital. I cooked my own dinners. I put myself to bed. So you can say whatever you want about our dad, but the truth is, I would have taken anything.”
SERIOUSLY WHAT A MEDIUM BAG OF DICKS
 Does Adam ever stop with the smartass remarks?
Tumblr media
DEAN WHAT THE FUCK.
“I mean, think about how many people we've gotten killed, Sam. Mom, Dad, Jess, Jo, Ellen. Should I keep going?” None of those deaths were your own fault, you’re reaching for straws here pal.
“I just…I—I don’t believe.”
“In what?”
“In you.”
I hate Dean’s campaign of driving people away so they’ll let him go, I h a t e t h i s.
“You’re angry, you’re self-righteous. Lucifer's gonna wear you to the prom, man. It's just a matter of time.”
“Don’t say that to me. Not you...of all people.”
Omg, an almost direct parallel from “When the Levee Breaks”.
You made Sam cry, you asshole.
I love Bobby checking in on his sons :’)
How did Dean know Cas was gonna come down to check in on him? That crash was well timed.
And Cas actually showed concern for him!!
Dean, you fucking asshole.
“Cuff him to your chair.” lmao
Adam, meet Zachariah.
Tumblr media
The other time where I can’t even argue against Zachariah...except for the “erotically” bit.
“Trust me, kid, when the heat gets hot, they're not gonna give a flying crap about you. Hell, they'd rather save each other's sweet bacon than save the planet.” Oh wait, there’s another time he’s just...kinda right. Tho I’d kinda argue that they’ve come a long way from that.
OOOHHH HERE IT COMES. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES IN THE SERIES...and the reason I started shipping Destiel full time.
El Sol!
OOOOHHH IT’S DEAN BEATDOWN TIME!!!
Tumblr media
It is so satisfying to see Cas beat the shit out of Dean after everything he’s said and done in this episode.
Tumblr media
Also, how are NONE of the passing civilians noticing this fight???
Tumblr media
I just...get a huge kick out of that scene.
And now, I attempt to explain why this scene (of all scenes) was the reason I started shipping Destiel:
To me, there were two stages of Destiel; 1. Dean’s in love with Cas and 2. Cas is in love with Dean. For whatever reason, this was the moment I realized Cas had very deep feelings for Dean.
The level of betrayal he was feeling from Dean seemed much more personal than just ‘I went to bat for the guy and he struck out, wah wah”.
Also, the fact that he emphasized that he did/gave EVERYTHING for solely Dean definitely came off more than platonic to me.
(Not to mention how close their faces were to each other; almost every time I watch this scene, I half expect them to start making out with each other.)
All I know is that from there on out, I looked forward to their interactions--well, even more than I already did-- and that I was looking at them in a different light.
“Bobby, what do you mean ‘Adam is gone’?”
“Should I say it in Spanish?”
lmaoo. Knowing Bobby, he probably could.
Tumblr media
“What the hell happened to him?”
“Me.”
ayyyy
Unceremoniously dumped on the couch, lmao.
And I also kinda love that they asked about what happened to Dean only once, then proceeded to talk more about Adam. It may be because he’s the bigger fish to fry, but it kinda reads to me that Bobby and Sam are in silent agreement that Dean had that beating coming, so they won’t even ask more about it.
The Green Room.
Tumblr media
Oh, Persephone move there bro.
“So you lied...about everything.”
“We didn’t lie. We just avoided certain truths to manipulate you.”
Adam, you poor fool.
i wonder who carried Dean down to the panic room.
“Word to the wise: don’t piss off the nerd angels.”
“Either it’s a trap to get me there to make me say yes, or it’s not a trap and I’m gonna say yes anyway. And I will. I’ll do it. Fair warning.” No, you won’t.
“When push shoves, you’ll make the right call.” Sam’s right.
“I—I don’t get it. Sam, why are you doing this?“
“Because… you’re still my big brother.”
I am like, Sam’s #1 fan when it comes to this episode. I am rooting like hell for him.
Van Nuys, California.
Tumblr media
I love Dean’s reaction as Cas takes off his tie; he even looks over to Sam like “you seeing this?”
“Whoa, wait. You’re gonna take on five angels?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t that suicide?”
“Maybe it is. But then I won’t have to watch you fail.”
RIP Dean, torn a new one by Cas.
Dean looked at Cas like he thought the box-cutter was for him.
RIP angel. Killed by Cas.
One down, four to go.
Tumblr media
What a badass move.
“You came for me.”
“Yeah, well, you’re family.”
Awww.
Tumblr media
Crap.
Zachariah’s just twisting the knife.
Tumblr media
“Damn it, Zachariah. Stop it, please. I’ll do it.”
“I’m sorry. What was that?”
“Okay, yes. The answer is yes.”
:(
You can literally pinpoint the moment Dean changes his mind.
Tumblr media
“I said…before Michael gets one piece of this sweet ass…he has to turn you into a piece of charcoal.” There’s the Dean I love.
“Michael’s not gonna kill me.” Zachariah’s last words.
Tumblr media
RIP Zachariah. Killed by Dean. Still such a satisfying death!
Whoa, just realized Dean watched Zachariah die...and he still has eyeballs.
Dean lets go of Adam to help Sam. That one little decision with such huge consequences...
“Dean! Help! Deean!”
Poor Adam. I really do feel sorry that he got caught up in all this. I’m kinda hoping they’ll address him a bit in S14.
“You think Adam’s okay?”
“Doubt it. Cas either. But we’ll get ‘em.” aww.
“So, what changed your mind?”
“Honestly? The damnedest thing. I mean, the world’s ending. The walls are coming down on us, and I look over to you and all I can think about is, ‘This stupid son of a bitch brought me here.’ I just didn’t want to let you down.”
ACCEPT THE APOLOGY SAM.
“Just...let me say this. I don't know if it's being a big brother or what, but to me, you've always been this snot-nosed kid that I've had to keep on the straight and narrow. I think we both know that that's not you anymore. I mean, hell, if you're grown-up enough to find faith in me…the least I can do is return the favor. So screw destiny, right in the face. I say we take the fight to them, and do it our way.”
That meant the universe to Sam.
HELL FUCKING YES DEAN. You are forgiven for the bull you pulled this episode.
Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/alaina-huffman-talks-directing-fandom-social-change-supernatural-course/
Alaina Huffman talks Directing, Fandom, Social Change and 'Supernatural,' of course
I had the chance to catch up with Alaina Huffman (Supernatural, Stargate Universe and Smallville) at the Supernatural Burbank convention.  Our paths have crossed many times, but we had never had a chance to sit down and chat until then – and what a fun conversation it was!
Alaina was appearing as a guest at that convention, and after playing Abbadon on Supernatural for multiple episodes, had just returned to that set to shadow director Phil Sgriccia. I couldn’t wait to hear all about that, but first, we had to gush a little about the SPN Family. The Burbank convention, in particular, feels like a family affair, since many of the cast are local and can bring their families along.
Lynn: It really does feel like everyone is family at the cons.
Alaina:  Especially here, everyone has their family and their kids here.
Lynn: OMG Matt [Cohen, Supernatural and General Hospital]’s son Macklin is so cute.
Alaina: SO cute!
[Yes, we were gushing. If you’ve seen Macklin, you totally understand why. There followed a brief pause for both of us to grab another handful of Doritos from the bag on the table between us]
Alaina: (laughing) I’m so sorry, you’re gonna have a lot of crunching on your tape.
Lynn: From me too! I’ll just laugh when I’m trying to transcribe it because I’ll know what all that noise is.
[And yes, that’s what just happened…]
Lynn: So tell me about shadowing [director] Phil Sgriccia on Supernatural recently. How was that experience?
Photos: Fangasm SPN
Alaina: So cool. I talked to Phil about it quite extensively. You know, going through your career, people always ask, are you interested in directing, or producing, or blah blah blah. I created a comic book a few years back with MTV, and that was my first foray into producing anything and managing a bunch of people around a project that was centered around me.  And it was great; I loved it. And it was successful, we launched the full graphic novel and then I just sort of went on with my career and my life. And then this last couple years has been funky. Just to share a little, I’m getting divorced.
Lynn: That’s always hard, no matter what.
Alaina: I feel like we should have a party — 17 years and four kids is not a failure!
Lynn: Absolutely not.
Alaina: But he’s had a really hard time, and he’s dealing with his own things, and it’s a bit painful. And it’s just weird, it’s like, what happened here? So I’m trying to move on with my life in a personal way and a professional way and also, I’m a single mom with four kids, and it’s all me all the time.
Lynn: Which is unbelievably hard!
Alaina:  I spent a lot of the year sort of resenting that even though I did want the divorce. So anyway, I found myself saying I need to do something, I need to be busy.
Lynn: That can be very therapeutic.
Alaina: Not that I’m not busy with four kids and a career, but I needed something to put my focus on. And I talked to Rich [Richard Speight, Jr., Supernatural, Kings of Con] about it and he had suggested this, and then my other friend Bam Bam – James Bamford who directs a lot for Arrow and I worked with him on both Smallville and Stargate. So I just kept having these conversations with people independently from each other, and I thought, what am I doing? So I sat down with a friend of mine, Chad McKinney, who was a studio executive over the show and now has moved on to Sony, but he was like, why don’t you talk to Phil [Sgriccia, Supernatural]? And I was like, that’s a great idea. So I sent Phil an email and said hey I’d love to pick your brain about directing. So we went out for a coffee, and we had a 2-hour coffee, and I said, I’ve never directed anything, I don’t know what to do. And he said listen, I’m doing shadowing next week, why don’t you come to Vancouver?
Lynn: Phil seems like such a giving person, such a wonderful and talented man. One of the reasons Supernatural has been on the air going on 13 seasons.
Alaina: He’s a great mentor. So I took that opportunity knowing the circumstances that I’m in, and I explained to him, I don’t know if I can get away, and I ended up making it work. And I got up on set and, you know, it’s a beautiful family, it really is.
Lynn: It really is, literally.
Alaina: And Phil really is a great mentor. Every meeting we had [after shadowing], he was like, so what happened there was…  And he just really took the opportunity to teach me along the way. And honestly? I was lost for a lot of it, during the prep work, because it’s so disconnected from being on set.
Lynn: Right, so different from the part of it that you’ve seen, working as an actor on a show.
Alaina: For 20 years. And so I was sitting in meetings going, ‘what are they talking about? I know I read the script like five times, why don’t I understand?’
Lynn: (laughing) Like hey, I’ve been on this show…
Alaina: Yeah! And I know what department head is talking and I still don’t understand what’s going on! And then we went on the scout, and we had to go back out because we lost a couple of locations because of schedules and blah blah blah, and the second time through everything, I got it. Like oh yeah, the car is gonna come from here and this is this and that is that, and oh that’s what you were talking about!
Lynn: So it started to all pull together and make sense.
Alaina: Yeah. But definitely, there were a couple of shots of me probably on the internet like passed out on a set chair…
Lynn: (laughing) Understandable!
Alaina (laughing) I was like just falling asleep. But it was super fun, Ruth [Connell] was on that episode, which was great. So we got to prank Mark Sheppard and decorate his trailer with Misha’s [Collins] pictures.
Lynn: So you and Ruth plastered his entire trailer on set with photos of Misha!  I love that Ruth pulled you into it, and it sounds like Mark loved it too actually.
Alaina: He did!
Lynn: Which I guess is not really the reaction you’re hoping for when you’re trying to prank someone…
Alaina: He was a great sport, it was really really fun. And so funny, but we were worried – we were like well, he’ll either get really really mad or he’ll think it’s funny.
Lynn: Right, it could go either way. But you didn’t really damage anything; it was all in good fun. Sometimes pranks have a mean-spirited edge, but not that one.
Alaina: Yeah, so the shadowing was a great opportunity and it’s in the back of my mind as something that I sort of have a future plan for. I want to weave it into the fabric of my life right now, which includes raising my four kids by myself and being an actor and now working as a director. One of the things that I realized is that wow, this would be a really tough job for a single mom with four kids.
Lynn: That’s true.
Alaina: They call it the black hole, you’re literally in a black hole for two and a half weeks.
Lynn: Yeah, it sounds like you just have to immerse yourself. Jensen [Ackles] has talked about that, which is why when he directs, they usually give him the first episode filming. And Richard has too, about how much work it is. It sounds a) really stressful because you have so much responsibility and b) all encompassing.
Alaina: Yes. One thing that I loved is that everyone – my sort of mentors that I’ve conferred with on this, Bam and Rich and Phil – they were all like, you’re gonna get asked so many questions. And Misha said the same thing; people just ask you questions and you just kinda have to have an answer. You’re the one who has to answer.
Lynn: It’s like the buck stops there really.
Alaina: And it made it sound like it would be really overwhelming to be asked all these questions, but as I witnessed it – and I wasn’t being asked the questions, Phil was – but actually it feels very helpful to me, because something in everyone’s inquiries would jog your memory and you’d be like oh yeah, we need that. Because you can’t do it all by yourself.
Lynn: Right, and it’s a team, and everyone is there to remember their part of it
Alaina: Yeah, and everyone is so seasoned. So, it’s there. My youngest is four, almost five in December; he’s in preschool. So I’m sort of weaving it into my life, and it’s a focus now, and I think it would be something that I would like to do.
Lynn: And we really need more female directors.
Alaina: I feel like there’s a voice, and every person, each one brings their perspective into it – it’s story telling, an aspect of story telling, and we all bring our perspectives, so I will definitely bring mine.
Lynn: I’m looking forward to that.
Alaina: So I did this course today on manifesting intentions and that kind of stuff, and one of the things I realized as we were going through the work was about being present. In acting, we talk about being present all the time.
Lynn:  I’ve heard Jensen talk about that, that if you’re over-rehearsed, you can’t be present for the other actor.
Alaina: [nodding] And I wrote in my notebook – it was a big revelation for me – I always feel like I’m escaping, like I almost feel a little guilty, maybe because I’m a mom. But I always feel a little bit guilty when I travel or when I go away for work because I’m truly in the moment. Like I go to museums, I have fun, I immerse myself in a character, I laugh on set, it’s not stressful to me at all. And for years, I felt sort of guilty about that. And so I realized that’s where I am very present, and then I’m like oh, that’s not me escaping, that’s me being truthful to who I am.
Lynn: I wonder if you only feel guilty about that because you are a woman —  and a mom.
Alaina: [nodding] Yeah, yeah.
Lynn: I get what you’re saying, I do, but I’m not sure many guys would feel guilty about that.
Alaina: No! And that’s so true, and I know this is sort of a soapbox that I’m on right now, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat on planes with other women saying this or like you’ll have to make a choice, and I’m like, I’ve made a choice!
Lynn: Yeah, like this IS a choice!
Alaina: Thank you, this is my choice.
Lynn: Yeah, I’m doing both. I don’t think we say that to men, you have to make a choice.
Alaina: No, and I’ve sat on the very same plane with my male colleagues who are like oh, your family is so lucky you’re willing to do that for them.
Lynn:  Very different perspective.
Alaina: Yeah.
Lynn: That’s something we talk about in our books.  Have you thought about doing that Warner Brothers directors course? Richard told me all about it, and it sounds wonderful, and I think it’s meant to help women and minority directors be successful.
Alaina: Yes, it’s for minorities, but they do have a strong focus on women, absolutely. Nina [Lopez-Corrado] went through that program.
Lynn: Oh, she did! I love her so much. Everyone loves her so much. She’s so damn good.
Alaina: She’s great, and they love her. She’s got a great temperament  and everything. Absolutely it’s something I want to get into. There are requirements; you have to have a short that’s been in festivals or a feature…
Lynn: That’s right, Richard told me all the things he did to prepare, to get lined up to qualify, doing some commercials and shorts and things like that.
Alaina: Exactly. So it is a goal I’m working towards, and Jenny Klein has offered to write me a short to direct.
Lynn: I miss her on Supernatural. She’s also awesome!
Alaina: She is.
Lynn: Women supporting women, woohoo!
Alaina: Right, right. And the beautiful thing about it too is that I just have so many great friends who are like so talented. I did a short with Jenny [as writer] and Nicole Baer [as director] this summer.
Lynn: Oh yes, Vagabond! I tweeted it around. Talk about women supporting women – and SPN Family sticking together.
Alaina: Thank you! It was so good, and it’s funny because I was on set and Jenny showed up and I had said to Nicole earlier that day, this is the first time this has ever happened to me, and I know it’s because Jenny and I are friends, but I could hear her voice when I was reading the lines.
Lynn: Oh cool, because you know her.
Alaina: I could hear her inflection and her tone and her voice, and I was like oh, I get it!
Lynn: [nodding]
Alaina: I’ve had writers say to me before on other shows, like I hear you, after we’ve done a couple episodes and we get to know each other and have had dinners or whatever, I hear you in my head and I write from that perspective. But I’ve never had it go the other way, where I’ve actually heard the writer’s voice.
At this point, it was getting close to time for the Saturday Night Special concert, and Alaina’s handler, Victoria, came in to let us know. We spent a few minutes admiring Victoria’s awesome concert makeup, which is something she does professionally, so her makeup skills are A plus. That led to us wishing her happy birthday and then an epic discussion of birthday cakes, specifically the tres leche cake at Portos which I still have not managed to sample, much to my great dismay.
Alaina: But the line like on a holiday is blocks long. I have a friend who’s a baker there, and it’s not frozen stuff, it’s real.
Lynn: [is pouting]
I managed to pull myself out of my depression to get back on track eventually, however.
Lynn: So one of the other things that you have a unique perspective about is that you’ve been on successful genre shows with passionate fandoms before. For most of the cast, this has been a completely new experience, but not for you.
Alaina: Mm hmm.
Lynn: What’s different about this experience and this fandom from Stargate Universe or Smallville? Both of those are also genre shows with big fan followings.
Alaina: I was saying to Briana [Buckmaster, Supernatural] earlier that I’m a little envious of her and of Ruth and all these new people who have come into this fandom now — especially what’s happened with the band [Louden Swain] and with Rich, it’s like they paved the road.
Lynn:  Definitely. It’s so different having Louden Swain as the house band and Richard as the host all weekend.
Alaina: Creation has been around for so long and I’ve worked with them for so long and with other shows all over the world, but there’s something about this Show and this cast. You can’t even really pinpoint it – we genuinely like each other, and the fandom is genuine.  I’ve expressed this before – my show, Stargate Universe, was not well received, it was very negatively received by the fandom, and it was fine, we got over it, and people ended up coming around, but it wasn’t warm and fuzzy. But this – it’s like, you walk into it and it’s like a big slap of love in your face, and you’re like OMG they love me!
Lynn: [grinning] They do. Even with you being a bad guy.
Alaina: Especially with you being a bad guy!
Lynn: Yeah, I think especially, you’re right.
Alaina: That’s the crazy thing! And I’ve known Mark Sheppard for years, I used to call Mark my secret lover because I’d see him all over the world at these events, and I never worked with him until Supernatural.
Lynn: He did so many genre shows too, so he also has that perspective.
Alaina: Exactly. And so I’d see him, and I had done panels with him all over the world. So I’d probably known him for several years before I got on Supernatural and then I was like ‘Oh my buddy Mark Sheppard is on this show!’ So that was great getting to work with him and  Sarah, his wife, is a dear friend of mine and like the best thing that ever happened to him and I adore her.
Lynn: Me too, she’s awesome.
Alaina: So it’s just like beautiful. It really is, it’s real, I think anyone can tell, on a regular basis we’re like – yesterday I was on facetime with Ruth for about an hour – I facetime with Lisa Berry, we all see each other whenever we can. And Rich and Rob [Benedict, Supernatural] are doing this amazing show, Kings of Con [Comic-Con HQ]…
Lynn: You’re in it, right?
Alaina: I’m in it, I play Robbie’s wife.
Lynn: That’s right!
Alaina: It’s so fun, it’s so witty, it’s so well written. Rich directed the episodes that I was in – I was in two, but I think he did them all and Robbie wrote them. They hired everyone that they know and they pulled a lot of favors, and we just all wanted to support each other. This is how we are; we support each other’s campaigns and charities and – it’s real. There’s usually an email that goes out like, hey can you help me with this? But there’s no resistance from anyone; they’re like YES, what do you need me to do? Let’s get on the same page. I mean, I probably have six or seven text threads with all the different people, and we have conference calls about all the things we’re doing, it’s fucking beautiful.
Lynn: And it’s so unusual. I started studying fandom because of this show and this fandom, and I felt like this was going to be a phenomenon early on. But I’ve never seen anything like this – it’s like a family on the cast side – and the crew side too!
Alaina: Yes, the crew is so great too.
Lynn: And then a family on the fan side. It’s this weird reciprocity.
Alaina: And there’s a crossover as well.
Lynn: And yeah, that doesn’t happen either. That’s what my new book [Family Don’t End With Blood] is about, with chapters written by actors and fans – the stories are equally powerful on both sides of whatever you want to call it, it’s not really a divide…
Alaina: No!
Lynn: Everybody really knows each other, there’s familiarity.
Alaina: And if there is an issue and it’s vocalized, I do think there’s support behind people. Sometimes it’s a conversation, but it’s very rarely an argument.
Lynn: It might be a heated conversation, but it gets worked out usually.
Alaina: Yeah, and it’s fascinating to me.
Side note: I have no clue how we ended up talking about Star Trek and then Nichelle Nicholls, but that’s where we went next. Alaina may have been sharing her own fangirl moments.
Alaina: I adore Nichelle Nicholls.
Lynn: Do you know her?
Alaina: I do.
Lynn: [possibly starstruck] Oh wow. I’m kinda in awe right now.
Alaina: Yeah she’s amazing. I’ve had dinner with her several times, and she’s told me so many great stories.
Lynn: [chinhands]
Alaina: Two of my favorite stories that she told me, one was how these things [conventions] started.
Lynn: Oh right, because she was there.
Alaina: She was. The first real conventions were Star Trek. And what happened was, it was off the air and fans were really distraught and they wanted to get together, and they’re like, we’re gonna get together because we all really connect and we’d love it if you would come. I don’t know how many of them there were, but they wrote letters – this was back in the 70’s…
Lynn: Right, when people wrote letters…
Alaina: And I don’t have all the details, though she tells the story beautifully, but they wrote letters back and forth to Nichelle and said look, we’re gonna have a little get together. It wasn’t a convention, it was at some hotel in NY, it was a ‘get together.’
Lynn: [rapt] Right….
Alaina: And they said, if we can get enough people, we’d like to send you an airplane ticket and put you up in a hotel if you would come and meet us. And her and a few castmates were like of course! And then there were tons of people who ended up showing up.
Lynn: Because it was really popular, and didn’t they get it back on the air for a while?
Alaina: Yeah, with letters! And so that happened and that sort of created this fan world that happened, and then Gary and Adam were a part of that.
Lynn: They were really young too, they were like teenagers when they started this.
Alaina: Yeah I think like 14, it’s fascinating. And then my other side note on fangirling over Nichelle Nichols – my other favorite story she told me was about the kiss between her and Shatner.
Lynn: Oh the famous kiss, yes.
Alaina: Do you know the story? From what I was told by her, the network at the last minute wanted to pull the plug on it. They got nervous, and they were like, no, let’s do a hug.
Lynn: Um, yeah, not the same…
Alaina: Right? We’re gonna make this really big social movement, this civil rights movement…or maybe not. And so the story she told was that Shatner said ‘okay, we’ll get to the hug, let’s do the kiss first though, we’ll just get it out of the way. Okay, you got it? Then we’ll do any version of the hug that you want.’ So this was back in the day before video village, before any of that technical stuff. There was the camera, film; you had to check the gate. Young readers may not understand that we had film.  I remember when I started my career, we had film. And you’d have to re-roll sometimes, batteries died or whatever. So the story goes that they did the kiss, and then every take after that, Shatner went to hug her and leaned into the camera and crossed his eyes.
Lynn: So they couldn’t use it!
Alaina: [nodding] So that made all the takes unusable.
Lynn: OMG that’s amazing.
Alaina: Can you imagine how nervous that poor camera guy must have been? He must have been like I’m gonna get fired!
Lynn: What guts that took.  I guess he was the star; he was the only one who could have done that – but he did it.
Alaina: Even when the network didn’t want to do it. So I’ve met Shatner several times, and I have yet to verify that story with him, but that’s the story she told me and I love it, it’s one of my favorite stories ever.
Lynn: I only met him once, but I can believe it.
Alaina: Yeah, definitely.
Lynn: I mean, he’s friends with Misha. Rules? Who needs rules?
Alaina: Very clever, those two.
Lynn: That’s an amazing story.
Alaina: Isn’t that a good one? I love it. And it has a personal connection for me. The gay rights movement was also a really personal thing for me; I liken it to racial civil rights. Thirty years ago it wasn’t legal in a lot of states for me to marry my husband, you know?
Lynn: I know, that’s not even long ago.
Alaina: And even still, there are places that like frown upon it, and like, have you seen my kids, they’re really cute?
Lynn: They totally are.
Alaina: Like, look what happens when you mix things! So yeah, the gay rights thing was to me a really important movement for our culture and our society, and that again is a huge part of this fandom. And not just gay but all of it, LGBTQ, curious even.
Lynn:  Yeah, open.
Alaina: I’m really proud of the place we’re at with that. We still have work to do, but I love that straight people stand up for those rights and gay people fight for those rights, I love that it’s a cohesive thing.
Lynn: I was talking to Rob [Benedict] last week and asked him, do you know what a big deal it is that you got to play God as a bisexual, so validating. Robbie Thompson wrote that episode, and it was so amazing.  I give Supernatural a lot of credit – they didn’t just make a human bisexual…
Alaina: They made God bisexual! Woo, bam! It actually makes a lot of sense.
Lynn: It does. I do love this show.
Alaina: I’d like to touch on that too. I feel protective of writers because they’re real people, they don’t just write your favorite show, they’re people who are my friends. We had this happen a lot on Stargate; this is where I sort of started to realize that my friends would get all this shit for writing characters or things people didn’t like. And I was like wait a minute; these are the people who’ve brought you your favorite show for like 15 years!
Lynn: And wrote all those scenes that made you love it. Alaina: And created the characters that you love and that the actors got to play and you followed around the world to meet, and I feel like they deserve credit and respect and that sometimes they don’t get it. Jenny was the only female on the Supernatural staff for a very long time, and I think that was difficult at times. I am protective – Phil is amazing, as a producer and a champion for the show. They have that site, Shaving People Punting things
Lynn: I love every single thing they do on that!
Alaina: They’re so clever, right? So yeah, this is such a great talented group of people that are a part of this show, and I feel fortunate.
At that moment, Victoria returned to say that the SNS was about to begin.
Lynn: [scrambling for my phone] Okay hang on, I need to take pictures!
Victoria: Work it, work it!
As you can see, Alaina did.
Alaina: I’m so glad we could finally do this!
Lynn: Me too! Have fun out there!
So what do you think, fandom? We definitely need more female directors, and I have a feeling Alaina should be one of them.
