Zero Comment Challenge
So, @polizwrites came up with the Zero Comment Challenge, which is to find a fic on AO3 that has no comments but deserves some and leave a nice comment. I think this is a fantastic idea so I try to do at least one a week, and Iâve gotten permission from polizwrites to start my own thread of them :)Â
If you want to join in, you can go to the AO3 search page, choose a ship or character or fandom, filter however youâd like, and enter â00âł in the comments field near the bottom (it needs two zeroes!). But Iâm also going to be linking my searches in case people want a prefabricated search! Â
Every five weeks I reset this list to zero, but if you want to see my previous searches you can check the Zero Comment Challenge tag. You should also feel free to reblog this post with a link to your own search. (Just execute the search and copy the URL of the results page!)
Want to comment but not sure how to start? Check out 101 Comment Starters or the LLF Comment Builder!
#Sonic series#Sonadow#fanfiction#link#Ao3#Zero Comment Challenge#challenge#fandom event#reblogs#Sure a couple of these are bound to be troll works#I encourage to continue avoiding those#Otherwise seems like there's a lot of stuff with decent amount of Kudos and 0 comments which is sad#I'm gonna run a search in Russian for myself later too...

HANDSY
PAIRING: Jackson! Joel Miller x afab! reader || WC: 1.2k
SYNOPSIS: Your cycle is ruining your mood, and what better thing to do than get a free massage.
CONTENT/WARNINGS: MDNI/18+. NSFW. Suggestive content. Titty massage. Slight daddy kink. Established relationship. Joel being a little bastard. Ambiguous age gap (Joel is in his 50s, reader is in their 20s). Mentions of menstrual cycle and female characteristics about the chest. Banter and teasing. No use of y/n.
A/N: Alright, I'm kinda on a Joel Miller streak and I was just thinking about getting my tiddies rubbed by a man with strong & rough hands and this happened. Don't look at me like that okay, this is self indulgent and I just had to alright. Hopefully this is relatable for some of y'all lol. Shout out to everyone who has to deal with periods, you are stronger than the marines. Anyways, likes, comments, and reblogs are greatly appreciated! Dividers by @saradika-graphics.

Another month. Another week of unruly irritation, mood swings, and uncomfortable reactions to anything that breathed too hard or moved too fast. In the hecticness that was your current reality, dealing with the devilâs wrath was supposed to be something that slipped past your mind. Yet, in the efforts of your survival, having a menstrual cycle still took you off guard every time it came punching through your gut.
Tossing and turning in bed, you tried to get in the best position to ease your cramps by curling up in a fetal position. You thought it would make things better, but instead, the discomfort you felt all over your body pissed you off even more. A frustrated grumble filled the bedroom, flinging the sheets away and furrowing your eyebrows at the lack of relief.
Where the fuck is he?
Throwing on a pair of slippers you luckily claimed on a supply run, you shuffled down the creaky stairs of your home and wandered about until you reached the living room. Joel was hunched over his seat on the couch, currently messing with his guitar strings, aware of your presence the moment you hit the base of the stairway.
âSomethinâ wrong, sweetheart?â He questioned you as he took in your features and noticed your pout. You were upset; that was obvious when he found you in bed earlier today instead of somewhere else in the house. Simply kissing your forehead and letting you rest as best as he could, he expected you to come down to talk to him eventually when you had the energy to do so.
Joel didnât say anything as you came closer to him without uttering a word, slipping your legs over his thick thighs and pressing your face into the curve of his neck. He put his guitar to the side and wrapped his strong arms around your waist, hands instinctively digging into your lower back where you felt the most sore. He could tell from the way you clung to him that it was that time of the month, already having gotten used to your changes in demeanor to see the signs.
âUncomfortable?â Joel asked again, trying to get a better read on your emotions, but he only received an annoyed grunt in response. âGuess weâre just gonna sit here then.â
He ran his fingers up and down your spine, trying his best to lessen the strain you felt. He could snag some herbs to make you tea later if you were in the mood for it, but right now, a massage is what you could handle. His touch made you sigh with alleviation, focusing on the pressure points along your shoulder and backbone. Even with his attempts, the front of your body continued to ache.
âMy boobs are fucking killing me.â You declared out loud, a deep rumble of a chuckle escaping from the back of his throat.
âYou need me to massage them?â Joel offered, and his intention of doing that was purely to make you feel better. Though, you couldnât ignore the slight flutter in your belly at the idea of having his hands elsewhere.Â
Giving him a nod, you sat straighter on his lap, holding his gaze as he slipped his hands underneath the flannel you wore and made a beeline for your chest. Joel didnât flinch at the fact that you werenât wearing a bra, being told once or twice how freeing it was not to have to deal with the constant friction of clothes against your heated skin.
He palmed both of your breasts and squeezed, his grip just strong enough to calm the throbbing of the swelling from your change in hormones. Your eyes closed as you focused on his touch, allowing Joel to do whatever he wanted with you, what he knew best.
âFeelinâ better?â You heard him ask, humming out in reply. He grinned at your reaction, the hum sounding close to a purr as he pawed at your chest.
Taking his hands out from underneath yourâhis shirt, you whined, a smirk tugging at the corners of Joelâs lips. Lifting the top of the flannel to rest on your collarbone, his attention went back to your breasts, looking at them with a mix of desire and affectionate pity.
âPoor baby. Hormones got my girl all cranky and upset.â He said, placing a soft kiss on the top of each breast before handling your body once more. You donât know whether or not he was deliberately teasing you when you were the most vulnerable, but just hearing his voice was doing wonders to soothe your nerves.
Youâve always been fascinated with Joelâs hands since you met him, watching how heâd hold the handle of his gun or insert ammo into the magazine before reloading. His palms were rough, and his fingers were rougher, representing a man whoâs lived a long life, whoâs done unspeakable things to survive and get to this point. To most, theyâd dislike the feeling of having so much of a contrast, but to you, the difference of his skin against yours was almost euphoric.
Joel squeezed with more purpose, focusing on tightening his grasp along the sides where the pain was the most prominent. One harsh thumb came to stroke at your sensitive nipple in gentle circles, pulling a breathless moan from between your lips. The smile on his face widened when his ears picked up the sound, moving to do a combination of deliberate squeezes and circles on the exposed nubs.
The warmth of his touch morphed into something else, need coiling in your stomach and clawing up your throat. As discretely as you could, your hips shifted further into his, craving much more than what he was giving you. Joel couldnât help himself and brought you closer to him, grinding his hips up into yours. That got your attention, looking into his hazel eyes to find his pupils narrowly dilated.
âIf you need me to rub somethinâ else, I can.â Despite the years worn on his face, he still had a certain boyish charm that jerked at your heartstrings when he flirted with you. Or, maybe it was just his southern gentleman persona, ever so willing to tend to your needs no matter what they may be.
âYouâre annoying.â You mumbled to him, stubbornly refusing to outright beg for his affection, regardless of how badly you craved it.
âAnd youâre moody.â Joel kissed you tenderly, drawing away and snickering when you leaned forward to chase his lips for another.
âLet daddy make you feel good. Alright, darlinâ?â You nodded dumbly at the proposition of getting something more than your tits massaged.
His eyes flashed with lust, making quick work to peel off the flannel and toss it to the ground. Already growing hard at the thought of having his way with you, he tilted towards you, kissing the column of your neck and letting his beard tickle your skin. You released a shaky exhale, fingers running through his graying hair and tipping your head back to grant him more access to your skin.
âAtta girl.â

The night air was crisp, a gentle chill that made you pull your jacket a bit tighter as you waved goodbye to the last of the customers. Wiping down the counter, you glanced up at the clock and sighed. Another late night. As if reading your mind, the familiar ding of the door opening made you glance up, and there he was, as always, leaning against the door frame with a soft smile.
âHey, doll,â Bucky greeted, his voice smooth but warm, like dark coffee with just a touch of cream.
âBucky, you didnât have to wait,â you replied, but a smile tugged at your lips. You knew by now it was no use trying to convince him otherwise. From the first day heâd asked to walk you home, Bucky Barnes had waited for you at the end of every shift, even if you worked late. It was just something he did, and honestly? Youâd grown to look forward to it.
âI donât mind,â he shrugged, blue eyes steady as he watched you finish closing up. You noticed the way he looked at you tonight â maybe it was the tired lines under your eyes or the way you leaned a bit too heavily against the counter. Bucky never missed a thing.
You locked up, grabbing your bag, and he fell into step beside you, his gaze still fixed on you. He didnât say anything at first, just let you fall into the quiet, comfortable rhythm of walking together under the streetlights. The city felt peaceful like this, as if it were just the two of you wrapped in its glow.
As you reached your apartment building, Bucky stopped just outside and nodded up to your floor. âHow about a coffee? Iâll make it, you relax. You look like you could use one,â he offered with a gentle smile. You couldnât say no, and honestly, the thought of his company sounded far better than falling asleep alone.
Inside, he moved with quiet confidence, setting up the coffee maker in your kitchen as if it were his own. You sank into the couch, exhaustion settling over you, but his presence added a warm, easy calm that seemed to lift the weight from your shoulders.
A few moments later, he handed you a steaming cup of coffee and took a seat beside you. You cradled the mug, savoring the smell and the warmth. Bucky didnât try to fill the silence; he just sat close, content to be there. After a while, you looked up to find him watching you, an expression you couldnât quite place softening his features.
âThank you,â you murmured, and his hand brushed yours.
âYouâre welcome,â he said softly. âJust take it easy, okay? You do enough.â
You nodded, feeling his words sink in. He always seemed to know what to say, how to make you feel seen, even on your hardest days. And as he sat there, fingers just brushing yours, you felt a quiet certainty you hadnât felt in a long time. Bucky was more than just a friend; he was becoming your comfort, your peace at the end of a long day.
âGuess Iâll see you tomorrow night?â you asked, a hint of hope in your voice.
He nodded, a soft smile tugging at his lips. âWouldnât miss it for the world, doll.â

You sat on the couch and rubbed lotion into your aching feet. You had been committed to relaxing all week, but you never could until Marvin came home. Lately, he was staying out later and later with that Butcher character.Â
Marvin didnât keep secrets from you. You knew exactly the kind of man you married. Your past wasnât all sunshine and roses either. You didnât have it in you to judge Marvin for any of it. At the end of the day, he was a hero in your eyes.Â
You watched your Lifetime movies, the red throw blanket slipping from your shoulders as you bent over and dug into the arch of your heel with your thumb. You moaned softly, digging in deep.Â
The sound of keys in the door tore your attention behind you. Marvin walked through the door, took off his shoes, and then closed the door with a quiet huff. He locked the door, placing his hand on the back of it and leaning against it for a moment.Â
The wide expanse of his back moved and shifted beneath his dirty white T-shirt. Gold flashed across his neck. He pushed away from the door, rubbing the back of his neck, and stepped further into the house.Â
âHey baby,â you called out.Â
Marvin huffed, barely a smile on his lips. He changed course, heading away from the stairs and into the living room instead. His feet padded softly on the plush brown carpet. He stopped beside you, leaning down to kiss your forehead.
All the stress and worry from earlier evaporated from that small act. His kiss sent waves of relief cascading down your body, all the way to your toes. You wished you could bottle that feeling and give it to him ten fold.Â
Now that he was up close, your baby looked rough. His face was drawn, sad, corners of his mouth pulled down in a half grimace, half frown. Marvin caressed your face, running his thumb across your cheek before giving you another kiss on your forehead.
âWhatâs the matter, baby?â You asked.
Marvin shook his head. He looked away, looking down at the carpet. You grabbed his hand and squeezed, trying to duck your head to look him in the eye again. Marvin shook his head again, finally bringing his eyes up.
âNot right now, baby,â he said.
You tilted your head at him. Mustâve been really bad then. You stood up and let the throw blanket fall off of your shoulders completely. Cold air immediately hit your exposed skin in your dusty rose sleep short set.Â
You lead Marvin by the hand up to your bedroom. You didnât turn on the hall light, leading him by feel and not by sight to the bed you shared. You only let go of him long enough to close the door and lock it. Your daughter didnât need to hear you busting it down.Â
âBaby, you donâtâ,â he said.
âShh, shh, you just worry about feeling good,â you cooed to him.Â
His silhouette was about all you could see, as faint moonlight shone through the curtains and into the room. It had the added benefit of being at the back of the house, where all was quiet and sounds from outside were muffled. With the windows closed, there wasnât even the sound of crickets.
Your core heated up as you thought about what was about to come next. You dropped to your knees in front of Marvin, pulling at his belt buckle and zipper. Marvin groaned and sighed before he grabbed your hands.
âAt least let me shower first,â he said.
âNo,â you said, firmly and sharply. You nipped at his hands and he chuckled, releasing your fingers so you could push his jeans down.Â
âOh okay, you hungry, baby? You missinâ this dick?â Marvin asked.Â
Your answer was a grunt, pulling his jeans past his thick hips and thighs. His dick sprang free. You felt the heat of it on your face. You leaned in, inhaling his inherent manly scent. You moaned, rubbing your nose into his balls.Â
You couldnât resist. Your tongue flicked out to lick between his balls. He groaned, hands flying to your bonnet and grabbing hold. âDonât tease tonight. Suck that shit down,â he moaned.
You sighed. It was that kind of night. You opened your mouth and swallowed his dick down. His hot, thick length grazed across your tongue. The tip of his dick went a little too deep, making you gag a bit.Â
Marvin moaned, low and deep in the back of his throat. âJust like that,â he encouraged.Â
You released him, pulling your head back just to slide him back in. You drooled the more you did this, slobber coating his length and making it easier for him to slide down your throat. His grip tightened around your head, pushing you down quicker on his dick.Â
âThis mouth is perfect. Perfect. Open up wider, get more of me down there,â he groaned.Â
You moaned, trying to tell him without words that you couldnât. He couldnât get any deeper. You used your hands to grab his base, stroking where your mouth couldnât reach. Precum leaked from his tip, the taste of Marvinâs desire making you shiver.
It was quiet in the room, so every slurp was amplified. Every moan was like screaming in your ear. Every sigh and groan from Marvin shot arrows of pleasure to your pussy, making you turn gooey and dripping for him.Â
Marvin pushed you further, his tip brushing against the inside of your cheek. You cried, scooting closer on your knees. You removed one of your hands from his shaft and placed it on his thigh for balance. Your nails scraped against his jeans, creating a neat little sound.Â
âI wish I could see that nasty mouth sucking me down, baby. Need to see your eyes looking up at me. Hmm, need to see you cry on it,â he moaned. He hand slipped down your silk camisole, fingers searching for your nipples. When he found your left nipple, he squeezed.
You hissed. You were close to your cycle, your titties sensitive as hell at the moment. And he knew that. He knew your nipples became unbearable during this time, knew that twisting them was like an express train to your pussy. Each rub and tug was like the trainâs whistle. You clenched around nothing, painfully, as he teased your nipples mercilessly.
You did cry, pussy throbbing in your panties. You were so tempted to slip your hand down there. Relieve some of the tension. Some of the ache. Some of the driving need to be filled up.Â
Your eyes turned watery as you blink up at him. You swore that you could see him in the darkness. Could see the way his mouth would be twisted up, teeth sunk into his bottom lip, his chest heaving with his breaths.Â
Drool dripped down your chin as Marvin finally slowed down. You cried, scooting closer but Marvinâs hands on your head prevented you from getting closer. He slowly pulled out of you, you licked the underside of his dick, and he gasped at the sensation.Â
âThat pussy wet for me?â He asked.Â
You nodded against his dick. âYes, Daddy,â you said.Â
âGet on that bed and spread your legs. I think Daddy needs to check,â he said.Â
The back of your thighs tingled as you eagerly stood up. Your legs had begun to fall asleep by putting your weight on it as you knelt before him. You shook them out, shook some of the nerves and anticipation from your limbs.Â
You knew that your husband had disappeared into some secret, hidden space inside of him. A space where he needed to be in control. Needed to seek precisely what he wanted, nothing more or less.Â
You bent over your bed, arms tucked against your sides. Marvin stalked closer, running his hands across your ass. You gasped, body on fire where he touched. Your shorts were tiny, so he had no issue pushing it to the side. He pushed his thumb against your panties, pushing the fabric into your pussy. You whimpered, knees bending.
âStand up,â he growled.Â
You popped your ass back up, whimpering louder. This was so unfair. His thumb felt too good but it wasnât enough. A fire was burning in your thighs. You shook all over. Shook from the cold air still pumping through the vents. Shook from Marvinâs big frame against your back. Shook from the darkness and intrigue of fucking like this in the dark. Something nasty and primal, something deep between you and your husband.Â
Marvin placed a hand on your lower back, pushing you into the bed while he dug his thumb in harder. You cried out, rubbing your ass against his groin. He groaned, humping your ass while he continued to push and push, and rub.
You cried out, âOh!âÂ
Marvin groaned, rubbing furiously at your pussy until you were making a neat puddle in your panties. Shit. There went another pair ruined. You could hear how much of a dripping mess you were.Â
âM-MarvinâŠâ you said, sounding a little nervous. You needed more but hell, could you handle more? Could you handle having his fingers on you, in you, fucking you, and driving you to new heights of pleasure?Â
âDaddyâs not done, sweetheart,â he said.Â
You hissed as Marvin teased and teased at your clit, rubbing with a tiny piece of fabric covering your pussy. Marvin was still hard behind you, dick lightly slapping against your ass.Â
âPlease, baby. Please, I want some dick,â you whimpered.
Marvin chuckled, almost evilly, as he leaned down over your back. He nudged your camisole up with his nose, exposing inches of skin on your back. He took a big bite, clamping down hard enough to sting. You jerked forward, Marvin following your movement. He licked away the sting and you whimpered, flooding your panties.
âAww, you want some dick? Iâm not done with my inspection. You wouldnât keep a hard working man from doing his job, would you?â He asked.Â
His voice was so deep, so raspy, so filthy in the dark. You focused on it, let it wrap around your body like the finest blanket. âBut baby,â you moaned.
Marvinâs fingers stopped rubbing you long enough to smack across your ass. The sting was white hot against your cheek, the sound preceding the pain. You gasped and then breathed through the pain, breathed through the bloom of pleasure in your pussy.Â
âDonât âbut babyâ me, you know better,â he said.Â
Your fingers clutched the covers in a death grip. He was killing you. Breaking you down molecule by molecule and he hadnât even fucked you yet. You bit the covers, growling to help give you a different way to release that energy.Â
âYou gonna behave?â He asked.
He waited all of a second before grabbing your short, gathering it into one hand, exposing the swells of your ass cheeks. He spanked your ass again, skin to skin. You jumped with a squeak and then cried. But the more he placed strategic, hard slaps to your ass, the wetter you became. Your ass was rising up to meet his strikes, moaning as he found new spots to light up.Â
âIâll behave,â you sighed, voice too weak to say it more clearly. If you didnât get fucked right this second, you were going to chew through the bed. You needed his dick right now.
Marvin smoothed his hands over your flaming ass. You jerked, ass too sensitive. Marvin sighed as he yanked your shorts and panties down, low enough to trap your legs. He gripped your ass and then lined himself up, his tip at your entrance.Â
âFuck, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,â you chanted over and over.Â
He eased himself in, your wet pussy helping to accommodate someone of his size. The foreplay was necessary, needed to help guide himself inside. He groaned, low and deep as he sank further in.
When he couldnât go any further, he stopped for a moment and panted. âWhatâs your color, baby?â He huffed.
You took deep, measured breaths. Your eyes were currently crossed, trying to think past the delicious feeling of being full. Stuffed. âY-Yellow,â you moaned.Â
Marvin moved his hands to your hips, meaty hands digging in for purchase. âYou know what to say to get Daddy to stop right?â He asked.
âYes, Daddy,â you moaned. Your mind was gone, focusing completely on his voice. You closed your eyes and gave yourself over to the pleasure. Your ass was still on fire and he made it worse by rubbing his rough jeans across your ass. The zipper teased your thigh, making you tingle and want to laugh at the same time.
No other words were needed. Marvin pulled all the way out of you and then started fucking you like you stole something from him. Like you were just a thief and he was going to fuck his way to retrieving his property.Â
His dick rammed inside of you, relentless. He was a powerful machine, jackhammering. His grunts grew more frequent, moans escaping him in short, quick breaths. His gold chain clinked against his chest, thumped with the power of his strokes.Â
You grunted, not enough air in your lungs to release a proper moan. Your fingers ached from holding onto the covers too tightly. He gripped your hips tighter, pulled you onto his dick without mercy. Without stopping.Â
Your ass slapped against his thighs, sounded like gunshots. He fucked you so hard, your titties were heaving beneath you. âOh sh-, sh-,â you cried.
Your belly was getting tighter, pussy squeezing around his big dick. Your limbs turned liquid, melting, drowning, slipping into a rough orgasm. You groaned loud, shaking, cries wobbling in the air.Â
âFuuuuck,â Marvin moaned, ramming into you one last time while your orgasm triggered his. His hot, sticky cum filled your pussy. He jerked and twitched, grunting, pushing further and deeper in as if he could fuck his cum deeper.Â
When the last possible drop of cum leaked from Marvin, he stopped moving and huffed and panted behind you. His hands were glued to your hips. You had a slight burn on your thighs from his jeans that dug into your skin.Â
Marvinâs sighs were deep and soul cleansing. It felt like all of the stress and negative energy that tore him up when he walked in, immediately left his body as he collapsed on top of you. You hummed, enjoying the heavy weight of him on your back. It was one of the only times that he let himself drop like this.
He softened inside of you and he slowly worked himself out. He didnât speak as he stepped back, stumbling a bit. You didnât say anything, didnât want to ruin his climb back to consciousness.Â
âFuck,â he said. That one word was a plea, sigh, prayer, and expletive all at once. He gently released his hold on your hips and then rubbed the spot where he held on. He placed soft kisses to your back, arms, and ass.Â
You whimpered and sighed. His cum leaked out of you, dripping down your pussy lips and down your legs. Your legs shook, that same type of bliss flooding your system as well.Â
Marvin flipped you over onto your back. You whimpered. Fuck, you were sore and achy all over. But you also never felt more amazing. More alive. Fuck, you missed your husband. Missed this.Â
Marvin rubbed you down, finally removing your shorts and pants completely. He did the same to your camisole, leaving you completely naked. He stripped out of his own clothes. You missed the heat of his body.
A rush of air fell across your damp chest. Naked as well, Marvin returned to rubbing feeling into your body. He helped you climb onto the bed so that you werenât awkwardly bending off of it. He scooted between your legs, kissing your chest, breasts, stomach, jaw, neck, and lips.
You sighed against his lush lips, tongues dancing and learning each other. âSorry, baby,â he said. âIâm sorry,â he said.
âShh, shh,â you cooed and kissed him back. Your poor man. His anxiety was only outmatched by his guilt. Not for fucking you like that. But because he didnât want to hurt you. Didnât want to cause you pain. Silly man.Â
Didnât he realize that you loved him? That he was your sun in the morning and moon at night? That you would proudly accept everything he gave you? That you would always be his personal stress relief toy, free to use whenever he needed?Â
âThank you, baby, thank you. Youâre so beautiful. Youâre so amazing. I love you so fucking much,â he whispered against your skin, kissing each word deep into your body.Â
âI love you, baby,â you said.Â
Marvinâs dick throbbed against your leg. You moaned, gyrating your hips against him. âPlease, baby, more,â you sighed against his kisses.Â
You wanted nothing more than to kiss him for eternity. To kiss away every worry he had, every thought that caused him pain, every flying nag of anxiety. But you were always hungry for more Marvin. Hungry for his thick muscles, broad shoulders, and big waist. Hungry for the way you felt protected and cherished in his grasp after doing something so incredibly nasty.Â
Marvin kissed down to your chest, tongue flicking across your sensitive nipples. You hissed, hands flying around his shoulders and holding him closer to you. Marvin stepped forward, grabbing his dick and sliding it back in you.
Your mouth dropped open at the sheer fullness of his dick. Your nails scratched at his back, scratched at his scalp, as he alternated sucking on your titties. He pulled out slowly and then pushed in, fucking you slowly and tenderly.
âMarvin,â you moaned.
âSay it again,â he commanded.
âMarvin, fuck!â You moaned.
Marvin groaned, digging into your guts. You could feel his tip kissing your cervix. Your pussy made wet, squelching, lewd noises as he fucked into you once more. He groaned against your titties, fanning warm breath across the saliva he left on your nipples.Â
âYour pussy is my favorite place to be. All I wanna do is come home to this. Come home to your pussy, squeezing my dick,â he moaned against your skin.
âMarvin, please,â you sighed. He had to stop. Had to stop talking otherwise you were going to explode. Going to break down to your base atoms and never find your way back together again.Â
âThereâs times where I canât breathe, but then I think about this. Think about being inside of you. Fucking you. Using you. Ruining you. And I find the strength to keep going.â
Your orgasm was intense but easier to withstand. Like the powerful swell of a wave rushing over your body. You cried and whimpered his name, tears in your eyes from the dichotomy of Marvin. The way he pushed and pulled. Took and gave. Sweet and savory.Â
âMarvin, please, come with me,â you whispered.
âIâm cumming for you, baby. I love you,â he said. He leaned up and kissed you, wet lips slanting over yours. His beard tickled your chin.Â
âI love you,â you moaned.
He increased his strokes, digging you out. âI love you,â he whispered.
âI love you,â you whispered.Â
Marvin moaned, gasping as he released himself inside of you, pushing thick ropes of cum inside of you once more. You were a ruined mess, crying at the feeling of his throbbing dick.Â
He grunted when he finished, working himself out once more. You yawned and shivered as he left, turning on the light in the bathroom. The harsh light burned your eyes a bit, but you blinked through the tears to get a good look at Marvinâs figure.
He was so thick in all the right ways. Gorgeous ass. Massive thighs. His dick swung heavy between his legs as he walked further into the bathroom to run a bath. You heard the water and sounds of him moving around.
You must have dozed for a second because Marvin was gently waking you up, telling you to hop in the bath.Â
âJoin me?â You asked sleepily.
Marvin chuckled. âLet me shower first, babygirl,â he said.
âOkay,â you mumbled. You sat in the water, sighed as the warm water eased aches and pains in your muscles and pussy. Marvin got into the shower across from the tub. You watched as he scrubbed himself clean, cleaning with a vigor that belied his racing thoughts.Â
Clean, he slipped in behind you in the tub and helped clean you up. The quiet rumble of his hums were like melatonin. He played with your pussy in the water, sliding his thick fingers into you until you were cumming once more, cries echoing off of the subway tile on the walls. You werenât quite sure what happened after that. You smooth passed out in Marvinâs loving, tender care.

So there's this post with a troubling number of notes going around insisting that "dead dove" is not a genre, it doesn't inherently have anything to do with darkfic, and that the tag could be applied to fics that are "100% fluffy where everyone's having a good time" if they happen to contain some abnormal (though entirely non-problematic) content like an unusual kink. The claim is that "dead dove: do not eat" is simply a "courtesy tag" that means "this is a very specific niche, mind the tags." And that's just... wrong.
I wrote up a whole rebuttal to this post since I can't stand misinformation and frankly OP was being kinda rude and judgey on top of their wrongness. But right after I posted my reply, OP turned off reblogs because, and I quote, âsome fuckwad added some dumb shit onto this post and it is no longer educationalâ (the âfuckwadâ being me and the âdumb shitâ being proof that they were wrong). A couple people have asked me to make a rebloggable version of my response, which I've decided to do because this isn't the first time I've heard similar claims and I want to help set the record straight. However, I'm not linking the original post on the off chance this gains traction because OP did the right thing by turning off reblogs, preventing it from circulating further, and I don't want them to get hate for being unfortunately misinformed.
For those who don't know the history, "dead dove: do not eat" was originally proposed as a catchall "hydra trash party" alternative label for any fandom to warn that the content of a fic may be considered problematic or potentially upsetting and to read the tags carefully so you know what you're getting into and won't complain later. Specifically, DD:DNE was intended to convey that the Bad Things in the fic would likely be reveled in and not explicitly condemned by the narrative, which some people tend to get up in arms about, hence the need for the extra warning in addition to the tags. Don't believe me? Here's the original proposal (note DD:DNE can be found on a handful of fics dated before 2015 but this is when it really took off and became a Thing).
There are currently around 50,000 fics tagged as "dead dove: do not eat" on AO3 and close to 50% of those also include the rape/noncon warning (which of course is not the only type of "dead dove" but is one of the most popular and most consistently tagged). The normal percentage of noncon fics in any given fandom? Around 1-3%. That's a HUGE disparity. So don't tell me that dead dove is just a general "courtesy tag" and doesn't or shouldn't have dark connotations. Even the context of the original joke on Arrested Development has a dark undertone. Micheal Bluth casually finds an animal carcass in a bag in his refrigerator with the label "do not eat", as if eating it would be any sane person's first thought. The whole situation is kinda fucked up. And this fucked up vibe very much carries over into fandom usage too, as was intended.
The claim that dead dove has nothing to do with the content's genre and could just as easily be used to describe a 100% fluffy fic in which everyone's having a good time is straight up Wrong, or at the very least, severely warping the original meaning. Also, when someone these days says that they like/dislike "dead dove" most people in fandom automatically understand what that means because of the consistency of its usage over the years and the way language evolves. Whether you like it or not, "dead dove" IS a genre now and the term does carry a specific connotation. I do agree that DD:DNE should definitely still be used in conjunction with other tags, when applicable, to be explicit about the exact type of fucked up content you may find, but to say that the term is meaningless on its own is patently false and I'm tired of people who don't know what they're talking about pushing this narrative and causing even more confusion.
You want a generic term that also means "mind the tags" and doesn't have any inherently dark connotations? Just use good ol' "what it says on the tin" instead of trying to force dead dove to be something it's not.
#fyi I've tweaked my response slightly to remove specific references to OP and make it read better on its own#I hope I don't regret making this post and inviting The Discourse#but dead dove is a topic that is very near and dear to me#I feel like someone has got to say something and put a stop to all of the misinformation around it these days#fandom#long post#my words#psa#wendy's help desk

Video Killed the Radio Star - Tape #1 (Spencer Reid x Fem! Reader)
A/N: After being dead on this account for years, like Christ (or bread?), I have risen (I'm not religious). The point is, if you are new to this series, welcome! I am rewriting this series for myself (and anyone still reading after all this time). It is something I want to see through and that I loved re-reading all these years later. The original reception was so warm and lovely, sometimes making me feel guilty for leaving so abruptly. I loved every reblog, comment, tag, and like for this series. I hope that if you're still here, you like the remake. This series DOES contain sensitive matters such as kidnapping, death, torture, sexual themes, and more. If you struggle with this material please know you are not alone and always reach out for help. I will be making a new masterlist once I have more chapters out. Please let me know what you think and enjoy! - Much love, Em <3
Video Killed the Radio Star Remake Masterlist
Link to the Ao3: Video Killed the Radio Star
Next Chapter: Tape #2
WARNING: stalking, mention of kidnapping, blood, cursing, and sensitive material ahead.
Tape Contents: You start recording videos for the BAU once you find out you have a stalker.
Word Count: 2,196
Tape #1- December 29, 20XX
Your face looks a little apprehensive as you move away from the webcam on your computer. Your eyes flick off the screen, leaning forward to read something as if you had planned out a script for yourself. You wave at the camera, offering the lens a weak and shy smile. Your posture slumps for a second, letting out a prolonged sigh. âI,â you frown at the camera, âIâm not good at talking to myself on video, it seems.âÂ
âI guess bluntness might be a saving grace for both of us,â you whisper as you play with a ring on your middle finger, sliding it up and down your finger, âYou know that feeling you get when youâre driving home late at night and you think to yourself, âOh my god. I think that car behind me is following me.â I think it all started with that.â A hand reaches for your hair, and you timidly move a stray strand away from your eyes.Â
âI tried everything I could think of and kept turning randomly, but it was too late. I would rush up to my apartment, and across the street would the same red van every fucking weekend. I tried to get the plate one day as I watched them leave from my window, but no such luck.â You swallow thickly, your voice suddenly full of emotion.Â
A sad smile crosses your face as you shake your head, âFucking dumb, this is so fucking dumb.â you cry softly as tears dance along your lash line. You take a deep breath and push your shoulders back in a desperate attempt to regain your composure.Â
You hold up a wilted, purple rose. Loose petals fall as you twist the stem between your thumb and index. âGot this last night, just on my windshield.â You mutter with a tone of disdain. âDonât even like roses.â you joke lightly as you set the rose on your desk.Â
âIâm going to the police tomorrow. I just⊠thought maybe doing this would make me feel better,â you pause and let out a bitter laugh, leaning toward the camera, âIt hasnât.âÂ
Then the screen goes black.Â
Tape #2- January 3, 20XX.Â
Your eyes have bags under them, and you gently rub the bridge between them. âSo, got told off by the police.âÂ
You lean back in your desk chair and shake your head before pointing accusingly at the camera. âWent to the station, brought my stupid fucking rose and everything. They told me they would patrol the area. Of course, what car do I not see across the street anymore? That fucking red van. Guy told me that I was just imagining things.âÂ
You relax for a second before speaking again, your shoulders squaring defensively. âAnd! And, the second they leave, guess who is back again. Every single weekend, 7 pm to 11 pm.â You let out a weary sigh and rest an arm on your desk, staring directly into the camera.Â
âThe Police said they couldnât even do anything until something boarding physical assault happens.â You trail off with a sideways glance away from the screen.Â
âIâm not going to just sit idly by waiting to get assaulted.â You hiss out, leaning forward and stopping the video.Â
Tape #3- January 14, 20XXÂ
Youâre playing with the edges of your sweater as you lean back into your chair, rocking slightly. âGot another love present today,â Your voice distant as you pull a Polaroid from the desk, holding it up for the camera to see.Â
The Polaroid was of you at the library where you worked. You were sitting in a striped sweater, your hair down. You were smiling at one of the volunteers who works âstory hour.â You threw the picture back on the desk with a grimace.Â
âNo one told me that my sweater that day looked so hideous.â You croak out in a desperate attempt to make yourself laugh in the moment, and for a second, it works. You start with a slight chuckle, but it quickly takes a sharp turn for the worst and becomes a full-on sob.Â
âIâm sorry,â you choke out before you wipe tears from under your eyes, âIâm just scared. My mom and I talked about it, and she said that maybe it was a âsecret admirer,â which⊠does not make it any better. I feel like everyone thinks Iâm fucking crazy.â Your voice raises before you cut yourself off and look down at your sweater again.Â
âIâm not,âÂ
Camera off.
Tape #4- January 17, 20XX
You smile at the camera and scoot a little closer. âHey,â you say with a gentle sigh of relief, âGreat newsâIâm organized!â
You lean back and relax in your chair slightly, âSo Iâm Y/N L/N. I work as a librarian here in Richmond, Virginia. My apartment will be in my records, Iâm sure.â You laugh out softly, holding up a photo of a tattoo that seems to reside on your lower collarbone.Â
âI didnât want to flash the camera, so I took the liberty of taking a photo of this lovely tattoo of mine,â you say, glancing at the photo of the line-art floral tattoo next to your face. âIf you think this doesnât seem like me⊠well, youâre partially right. I was drunk in Vegas for my twenty-first birthday, and then I woke up missing a good chunk of money and a tattoo.â You shrug as you slowly set the photo on your desk.Â
âIâm not trying to freak anyone out if they do see this. I justâŠâ you pause, releasing a slow and controlling breath, âI want to be found if I do go missing. I want to be easily identified if Iâm not alive. I want people to know I was a person and not just a body, you know?â You let your lips grow into a weak smile, nodding slightly, seeming to agree with yourself.Â
âIâm making these to help myself, to feel like I have more control. The presents stopped recently, but theyâre still watching me every weekend. It feels like it's about to get worse. I canât explain it. Iâm not trying to make the police feel bad. I just⊠donât like going down without a fight.âÂ
âSpeaking of not going down without a fight,â You reach over to grab a photo and proudly turn it over to the camera. âYou know who this is?â You ask your silent audience. âThis is the lovely Jennifer Jareau.â You answer with a weak smile, feeling strange as you talk with yourself.Â
âI decided to beg the police to email this video folder to her. Currently, just the police have this, as Iâm annoying and persistent but also very charming. Thatâs a lie. My coworker's boyfriendâs friend works at the station. Hopefully,â You swallow gently as the photo slips away from your fingers. âHopefully, they wonât have to send it to her and the BAU team, but in the unfortunate case, she does see this.â You smile, wave a little, mouth a soft âhello,â and lean forwardâscreen black.Â
Tape #5- February 10, 20XX
Youâre wearing a red, pink, and white striped sweater with a white headband pushing your hair back as the camera focuses again on you. âHappy Early Valentineâs Day to everyone who got a gift from their stalker on the top of their car today,â you say with mock happiness before your smile falls, and you hold up a copy of Wuthering Heights.Â
You flip through the pages before stopping on one and facing it toward the camera, trying to get it to focus, but you quickly find the task irritating. You groan and decide to read the line, âBe with me always - take any form - drive me mad.â
âThat's one of the lines circled, underlined, and highlightedâŠâ You say, flipping through more pages slowly.Â
âThe only scenes highlighted seem to involve Heathcliff and Catherine, which are romantic scenes, of course, but just that one quote is emphasized.â You say, shaking your head, and you laugh a little, setting the book somewhere outside the frame.Â
âWhat a shitty gift, I already have a copy.â You joke before the screen turns black.Â
Tape #6- February 14, 20XX
Your face is flush red, eyes swollen and raw from crying as you sit in front of the camera, speechless for a short amount of time. You look positively catatonic for a second, unmoving. The sound of you raking in a shaking breath scares you as you bring yourself to speak. Your face doesnât match your attire, as you sport a sweater with a giant pink heart in the center and small heart-shaped earrings hanging from your ears.Â
âThey were in here,â your voice is soft and hoarse. âThey were in here, everywhere. They left roses everywhere. They were in here! They got into my apartment and left dozens of rose petals on my bed, floors, couch, and kitchen table!â Your voice raises in volume as you cut yourself off, a small tear rolling down your cheek.Â
âSomething isnât right,â You were shaking your head and letting out fast breaths, on the verge of hyperventilating. âThis is all getting so,â you raise your hands to run through your curls, pulling gently. âI need you to find me. Iâm doing so much already. I went to the police station, and they searched everything: cameras, streets, but there was nothing! Just petals!â You yell softly, voice rasping softly at the end of your outburst.Â
âIâm sorry, I canât,â you mumble softly, tears filling your eyes.Â
Tape #7- February 17, 20XX
You smile awkwardly at the camera and hold up Jane Eyre, opening it to a dog-eared page. âYou are my sympathy --my better self --my good angel.â You read off the quote softly with a light sigh at the end of your reading.Â
âSeems like we have a BrontĂ« fan in our midst,â you try to be light-hearted as you set the book to the side.Â
âI wrote down all my passwords, but it's not like youâll need them. Nonetheless, you can never be too safe.â You quip the sentence in a soft voice.Â
âIâm trying my hardest not to do anything crazy. I just, nevermind.â You say, annoyance thick in your voice as you shut the camera off quickly.Â
Tape #8- March 2, 20XX
A terrible gnawing was growing in your stomach. Your hands clutched your waist gently as you leaned back in your chair. You felt like you might be sick as you stared off-camera toward your newest âgift.â Your throat felt taut as you swallowed, a shaky sigh coming from your lips as your pale face looked at the camera.Â
âIâm scared this might be my last video,â you say, your voice hoarse and tense, âIt all just suddenly stopped. There was no more red van, no more giftsânothing to write home about, but today,âÂ
You lean over to pull a pair of white, blood-soaked panties from a plastic bag into the frame. âThese were on my door knob today when I got home. I tried not to touch it. I put it in this bag to ensure I didnât contaminate it more. It doesnât look like blood blood, more like period blood.â As you throw the bag back to your desk, your voice edges into an emotional tone, tears threatening to fall from your eyes.
âI think that theyâre mine,â You cried softly, shaking slightly as you tried to control your breathing, âTh-the panties, not the blood. I havenât, those canât be from my period. Mine hasnât come y-â
âIâm not going to be okay. I was stupid to think I might be, but Iâm not!â You cry into your hands, and your shoulders shake as you let out a weak sob. âPlease find me if I go missing. Please,â Tears fall on your cheeks as you lean toward the computer.Â
âI need you to find me.âÂ
March 5, 20XX.Â
A clicker is in J.J.âs hand as she turns off the videos. âRichmond PD sent this over this morning when twenty-eight-year-old Y/N L/N didnât show up to her job,â She hands out folders as she speaks, âHer coworker called her mother to see if she had gone out of town when she said no. Y/Nâs coworkerâs boyfriend called a cop friend to check her apartment and found no trace of her or anyone else in her apartment. They sent this video folder over the second he called it in.âÂ
Spencer was frowning as he flipped through the pages of your file, hating the idea that you knew. He knew that dread, that feeling when something bad was about to happen to you. That innate and raw feeling that pushes through a person like a wave. He opens his mouth to say something, but Hotch is already speaking before he can get the chance to.Â
âWe leave here in ten,â He says before leaving the room, cutting everyoneâs comments short in one small miraculous moment.Â
Within ten minutes, the team finds themselves away from their jet, stuffed into groups in black SUVs, barreling toward Richmond.Â

Here is the link to pt. 1 if you havenât read it!
Also available to read on AO3!
  Two months laterâŠ
  You dream of Earth tonight.
There are fields; you are standing in one. Long Bermuda grass tickles your ankles with the gentle presence of the planet recognizing its own. The endless green is splattered with occasional droplets of color: pink poppies, yellow sunflowers, marigolds, dandelions. It is warm. There is a slight wind blowing, playing with your hair. You turn your face towards the sunlight and bask in the relief of knowing you are home.
All of a sudden, you hear a sound. Thumping. Steady, rhythmic. Loud. You feel the wind die down and suddenly the sun is gone, and there is only darkness. A massive shadow blots out all of the light. You see a figure looming over you, red-and-white with bright blue eyes that stare into your soul and make you feel terror.
You try to run, but find you cannot move your legs. There is nothing you can do when you watch a giant hand reach down in slow motion and pluck you up, holding you between titanic fingers. The monsterâs mouth opens, and then you are tumbling down, right into an abyss of metal and isolation. The Earth melts away forever. You are trapped. You are alone.
Shooting forward out of your nightmare, you hear yourself scream. The squishy floor underneath you makes you lose your footing when you scramble upward in a blind panic and fall into Driftâs stomach wall. Everything moves, the organ grumbling unhappily at you being awake. Your hands scramble at the mesh cables. Little pink bubbles of cybernetic blood pop anxiously beneath their semi-transparent surfaces. The walls close in to squeeze, holding you in a secure hug, attempting to keep you still. But you cannot think. You are scared, and you feel trapped, so you desperately begin to thrash and fight against the stomach.
Driftâs voice booms above you, panicked. âLittle one? Little one?!â
âLet me go!â you shriek. âPlease, letmegoletmegoletmego!â
The walls loosen up, freeing you. You collapse into the fetal position, gasping while sweat beads your brow and your heart goes crazy.
Drift presses his hands over his middle. âLittle one, little one, shhhh, shh, shh, shh,â he hushes frantically. âSafe, safeâŠsafe, all is safe...no need for fearâŠâ
Gradually, you calm down. Only when you are no longer trembling does Drift tentatively begin to squeeze you again. In and out, slow kneading, like heâs silently coaxing you to continue breathing at a healthier pace. âLittle oneâŠokay?â he asks.
Your voice quivers. âI-Iâm fine. Iâm okay. It-It was a bad dream. A nightmare.â You sit upright and lean into the stomach wall. Drift holds you close, the undulating muscle relaxing you with its constant massage. His biolights pulse and flicker, a clear sign of his stress. You woke him up with your screams. It makes you feel bad, so you snuggle his cables further. The robotâs stomach is not a big place, but Drift likes to be conscious of you. The support you provide him in completing this task is obviously appreciated, because he hums softly and pats his hand over where you are.
There is peace again. Peace and warmth. But you donât feel the usual safety. There is a lingering pit of dread growing deep within your gut, foul roots clawing their way through your body, leaving you jittery, uneased. Your nightmare is the first one in months, and itâs a sure sign things are not right.
It has been such a long time since you thought of your possible escape plan. You donât know how long, but you do know that you canât be comfortable here anymore. Your mind is sending the signals loud and clear.
No more stalling, you think to yourself. No more being complacent.
  You are not domesticated yet.
When Drift lets you out of hereâŠyou will go through with the plan to take an escape pod home. For real this time.
It takes you weeks to perfect your plan. And when you do finally have it all figured out, you come to the conclusion that things may end up being more complicated than you thought. Escaping a spaceship filled with giant alien robots is hard enough, yes. But then thereâs the issue of what will happen when you return to Earth. You donât know how long youâve been abducted. It could be months. It could be years. What if all of your family and friends are long gone by the time you get home? What if things are so different that youâve been completely left behind?
No. You canât think like that. A sharp patting to your cheeks snaps you out of it. Keep it together. This is the moment you have been waiting for. Regardless of what awaits you on Earth, you will be there to face it.
Youâve packed everything you own into a small fabric knapsack your mech gifted you during your first days here (Who knew robots are such good knitters?). Itâs not much, not much at all: snacks Drift gives you, strange pellets that clean your teeth, three cans of filtered waterâŠbut thatâs all you really require for the trip you are going to embark on. You donât believe it will be particularly long. The escape pods need to have some sort of device that allows them to leap through lightyears to their destinations. You believe this because youâve watched the mothership do it from the observation windows Drift likes to bring you to sometimes. Hyperspace will occasionally be activated, with stars and planets blurring together into dazzling white paint streaks before coming to an abrupt halt in a totally new galaxy.
Now, do you know how lightjumping works? Absolutely not. Last time you were on Earth, no such human technology had been invented yet. So you donât exactly know how youâll get the escape pod to lightjump like the ship does. But youâll find a way. You have no choice.
Now for the hard part: getting away from Drift long enough to activate the escape pod and blast away. Heâs not going to make it easy for you. Drift doesnât like letting you out of his sight if you arenât in his room, and hardly lets you roam free. Youâve spent hours, both within his stomach and out, pondering how to go about this. Itâs left you with the agonizing decision that youâll just have to wing it somehow.
The door to his room slides open. Youâve been sitting on his berth with your hands beneath your head and one leg crossed over the other, thinking, thinking, thinking, that at first you nearly didnât hear him come in. You sit up to greet him with more eagerness than youâd like to show. The nightmare didnât stop your affection for Drift from rearing its persistent head.
Thereâs no waiting for him to give you his time today. When he enters the room, his focus is immediately on you with no prior distractions. Drift walks with a spring in his step, his finials perking up like an enthusiastic dog. You notice a small white box he holds in one hand, and think nothing of it. Driftâs room is decorated with countless knickknacks from other planets. It wouldnât be the first time heâs brought some strange little souvenir home.
âHey, big guy,â you murmur happily when he kneels down before you. He settles the box to the side and cups both hands behind you, humming his typical car engine-purr greeting. You hug him when he draws you forth so he can nuzzle his nose into your middle. âIâm guessing you missed me?â
Drift beep-boops excitedly. He gives you an affectionate tickle to your side, causing you to giggle. Your reaction delights him. He keeps it up, and pretty soon you are laughing so hard your stomach hurts. âD-Drift, s-stop! I-I canât breathe!â
He gives you one last light prod, then ends the bout of torture with more cuddles. You recover from the laughter, feeling airy and light like nothing else matters except for the giant robot holding you.
âLittle one,â he coos. âMy little one.â
âMhm,â you mumble goodnaturedly. âYeah. Yeah, Iâm yours.â
He suddenly looks like heâs remembered something very important, and he straightens, chirping rapidly. You watch as he grabs the white box and, to your surprise, presents it to you. You glance at it, then turn to him. âFor me?â you ask, pointing at yourself.
  He chirps again and nods.
You take it from him and open it with a slight air of confusion, because heâs never given you something like this before. You think it might be a piece of jewelry, or some sort of charm. But what you see inside is neither of those things. You suck in a sharp breath of pure disbelief and go numb.
Itâs a collar. A damn collar. Sleek and narrow, its solid red with a single white stripe circumnavigating it. On one side is a strange symbol of a boxy red robotâs face-the same symbol he has on his chest. These are his colors, you realize. Heâs making us match. He wants the other mechs to know that he owns you.
Drift rumbles expectantly. When you remain frozen, unable to pry your eyes away from the collar, he gently pries it out of your now slightly shaking hands. With extreme carefulness, he clasps it around your neck. It fits comfortably and locks with a quiet click.
âMy little one,â he repeats. âMine.â
Heâs not trying to scare you. You know he isnât. Yet your throat is dry, and the snug weight of the collar makes you feel sick.
You need to get the hell off of this ship.
You spend the night feverishly trying to break the collar off, working yourself up like a caged animal driven mad by captivity. But no matter how hard you yank at it, it remains stubbornly fast around your neck. You refuse to eat the food given to you and cry yourself to sleep within a very concerned Driftâs belly, who canât seem to console you no matter how hard he tries.
Drift doesnât know what to do with you.
Youâve been moping ever since he gave you the collar. Over the next few days, any sort of drive to escape has left you. You're depressed and disappointed in him for what heâs done. You donât want to talk to him. You donât want to accept any of his gifts. Blanket after pillow after plushie-all made by him, with the crude markings of homemade love-are ignored. You shy away from his touch and reject his attention. When he swallows you at night, you give him no inclination you care. You sit like a stone within him and justâŠstare off vacantly, unable to ignore the collar around your neck.
Heâs brought you to the shipâs doctor multiple times. On the first trip, the old red medic bot looked you over and finished his checkup with a shrug and dismissive chuff. The second time, he growled at Drift and waved him away. And on the third time, he didnât even let him through the door. Thereâs nothing physically wrong with you. But mentally, how could they know? How could he know heâs hurt you? You trusted him to treat you with some level of respect despite your situation, and he had, until now. The collar was your breaking point. There truly is no way for him to ever see you as anything more than a pet, and it hurts you, because by god, you love him.
  ââŠLittle one?â
Drift calls out to you with a soft, sad tone. You huddle up tighter beneath one of your blankets and give no answer.
You hear him shift at his desk. Thereâs silence between the two of you that is not wanted. He heaves a low sigh and tries again. âLittle oneâŠplease?â
Damn your heart, you canât keep giving him the silent treatment when he sounds like heâs about to cry.
You push the blanket off of your head. Drift slouches in his chair, back bent like an old manâs. His finials are drooping, and the glow from his biolights is dimmer than usual. Heâs obviously been letting his personal hygiene go for the sake of finding a way to help you, and it hurts to know heâs in this state because of your shitty attitude towards what he simply sees as a gift. The collar is a curse, but you canât exactly tell him that, can you? This entire situation is all your fault.
It's the treacherous part of your mind which attempts to convince you of this. It partially works. Giving in, you sit up slowly, drawing the blanket tightly around your shoulders and tilting your head while giving him a questioning look.
Heâs surprised by your action, like he genuinely wasnât expecting you to respond to this extent. But he takes advantage of it. Drift offers you a hopeful smile and picks something up from his desk. He stands and walks to you, going slow. You donât flinch when he crouches down to your level. The warm light of his eyes leaves a kind feeling on your skin.
Tentatively, Drift extends his hand. In his palm is a piece of chocolate, one of the many treats he has at his disposal to provide you with when he feels you are being especially good. Itâs an olive branch. A reach in the right direction.
You hesitateâŠand then you think, Oh, what the hell. Staying mad at Drift when he has no clue heâs done something wrong in the first place wonât get you anywhere. So you accept the candy and take a small bite.
He sags with relief, exhaust whooshing from his nose as he watches you eat. When you're finished, he moves his hand closer, twining the palm around you and resting the tips of his digits against your head and sides. You hold his index finger, resting your forehead against it and closing your eyes as a sign of trust. But you feel guilty.
âIâm sorry,â you whisper, knowing he wonât understand. But you say it anyway. âI love you. I love you so, so much. But you're destroying me. I canât stay here anymore.â
A tear slips down your cheek. You donât notice it until Drift gently brushes it away.
âI have to go.â Your voice breaks. âI need to leave. I hope youâll learn why. And I hope you wonât hate me for it. I-I donât think I could handle it if you did. Please donât hate me. Please donât think I hated you.â
Drift coos. His reply is indecipherable. You think heâs trying to comfort youâŠbut youâll never know for sure.
He doesnât swallow you tonight. You donât know why; maybe he thinks you need a break. Maybe he just wants to hold you in a different fashion this time. You stay awake hours after he falls asleep, your little form nestled in the crook of his neck while he snoozes on his stomach with his arms crossed beneath his massive pillow. You peer off into the darkness, listening to his quiet breaths.
For the longest time, youâve thought of this room as yours and his. A space the two of you share together. Ours. It's fed into your delusional ideations of a future in which the two of you learn each otherâs languages, where you stand on equal ground, you belonging to him and him belonging to you. A future where mechs and humans join hands and say âI see you. I know you. I understand you and you understand me. Neither of us is higher than the other.â
But it will never happen. The collar around your neck is physical proof. There is no future between the two of you anymore. If you want to be you againâŠyou need to let Drift go.
You shuffle away from the botâs neck and stand. The only parts of him that are lit up right now are the red symbol on his chest and the soft blue of his mouth. Heâs so peaceful. This giant alien, who you know has fought in many battles from the scars you can see, is soothed by your presence. You, an insignificant little human being. The dynamic is honestly quite hilarious. You're like his very own version of a chihuahua.
You want to hug his nose, knowing you will never have another chance again. But Drift is a light sleeper, and you're testing the waters enough already. You canât risk it. It pains you, but you drop your arms and turn away.
Using the metal ladder he made for you so youâd have easy access to his berth, you climb down and grab your knapsack. Quietly padding across the long expanse of the room, you make it to the door. It senses your presence and slides open. You force yourself not to look back when you walk out.
You wonder if he will cry for you when he wakes up and finds you gone.
The spaceship is ominous at night. The only thing you can hear as you traverse the hallways is your heartbeat pulsing in your ears. You're trying to be quiet; passing by multiple rooms with slumbering bots inside has you holding your breath and then letting it out in a forcefully slow, reedy wheeze. You are, after all, a mouse in a prison filled with cats; slow and steady and silent wins the race.
You survey the elevator when you get to it, at a loss of how youâll possibly find a way to operate it due to how small you are. A miracle finds its way to you, however, in the form of a mech. This one you donât recognize. He has a similar color scheme to Drift, but is noticeably bulkier, with a strange cannon sitting on his right shoulder and a blue eyepiece over the adjacent optic. All of his focus is on the datapad in his hands as he summons the elevator. You wait for the doors to open and for him to step inside before darting after him. Luckily he doesnât look up once on the short journey. Your cover remains unblown when the doors part again and he heads off. You go in the opposite direction, because like hell are you going to follow the strange robot to someplace where there are probably more strange robots.
You slip in and out of sight, staying far away from any mechs who are awake. They do not see you, which means you are doing this right-though there are some alarming instances where you think youâll be caught. One such occurrence happens when a tall, thin blue mech with a chest like the front of a helicopter nearly sees you duck into an open storage room for quick cover. Its single orb ominously scans the darkened room. You watch from beneath a large shelving unit, terrified out of your mind. You donât move, nor do you make a sound, keeping a shaking hand over your mouth.
Finally, after what feels like hours, the mech stomps away. You let your head fall forward respitefully.
You know you're nearing your one-way ticket to Earth when you see bright yellow signs plastered on the walls with loud black alien words telling you to hurry left with the help of large arrows. Escape pod symbols, accompanied by a funny little robot mascot, are the giveaway. You feel a sort of giddy euphoria swell up within you. You're almost there. You're going to escape. You're going to go home. It all seems far too good to be true; sure, youâve imagined this scenario happening over and over again, but you never really did believe it would happen.
You pinch your arm multiple times just to make sure you arenât dreaming. This is not in your head. This is happening. You really are going back to Earth.
Your collar suddenly vibrates. And then it starts to screech.
You nearly jump out of your own skin. The alarm is loud, piercing, and undeniably going to alert someone to your presence. You slam your fists against it multiple times, but it doesnât let up. Your heart sinks when the realization of what's going on hits.
Shit. He put a tracker in it.
You need to run. You shove yourself forward into a full-on sprint, dashing down the last remainder of this hallway, then turning the corner and seeing the numerous escape pods all lined up in the wall. You choose the first one, grabbing the edge of the circular door and pulling with all of your might. The tendons in your neck strain as you grunt and slowly bring the door back with you. Clamoring in, you give it one last heave before it shuts on its own and seals you inside. You hear the lock click into place. The entire cabin flickers to life, with the lights on and the control panel booting up. As you expected, everything is far too big for you to reach. But it seems you wonât need to. A loud robotic voice emanates from the central console, speaking to you in the native mech language.
Your collar is still going off. You donât have a lot of time.
âI-I canât understand you!â you yell over the din. âIâm a human, from Earth! I speak English!â
The voice pauses. Seconds later, to your amazement, it talks, and you can understand. âLanguage notifications made. Destination updated. ScanningâŠâ A panel on the ceiling pops open, and a blue light filters out, washing over you. âScanning complete. Species: Homo Sapien. Homeworld: Earth. Milky Way Galaxy. Status: Critically endangered. Suggesting immediate travel to Earth.â
You clap your hands. âYes! Yes, thatâs it! Earth, set the destination to Earth!â
âDestination set. Awaiting command to launch LOST LIGHT LIFEPOD 01.â
You are about to give the order when something slams against the door. You whirl around, your heart stuttering when you see whoâs there. Itâs Drift. Heâs made it. And he looks horrified. With trembling fingers, he yanks on the handle. When the pod remains fastly shut, he pounds on the circular window with so much force the entire thing shudders and you think heâs going to rip it right off of its hinges. âLittle one!â he screams, voice muffled beyond the barrier of glass. âLittle one! OpenâŠ!â The rest of the sentence comes out as sharp metal shrieks.
You stand there helplessly. The pod once again inquires for your command, yet you canât find it within yourself to speak.
Drift is doing everything he can to get to you. Heâs like a rabid beast, clawing at the window, teeth bared in visible frustration. His biolights are going mad when he roars and sends his whole body into the door. This time, it does give a little. You can see some dents in the gray metal.
ThisâŠis a side of Drift you have never seen. It is desperate, vicious. And it terrifies you. You stumble back to the opposite end of the pod and curl up, hugging your knapsack to your chest like a child squeezing their favorite stuffed animal. Drift continues his futile attack on the door, but pauses when he makes eye contact with you. His face falls. His fists relax and slide downward to press palm against the glass.
Heâs quiet as he seems to reflect on how he just presented himself front of you, then whispers heartbrokenly. â...Sorry.â Tears stream down his cheeks. His hot vexation melts away and exposes his remorseful center. âSorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Little one. Y/N.â
  Oh my god.
All noise ceases when you register what he just said. Your name. He said your name. Heâs never done that before. You didnât think he knew your name.
He learned to say it. For you.
Drift whimpers like a kicked dog, moving to crouch lower. âY/N. Y/N, please. Stay. Stay with me. Please donât go. I love you.â
Youâve changed his life. You donât need to be told this. You know youâve brought him a sense of joy he hasnât felt in years. You didnât come here of your own free will. But you freely chose to love him. You gave yourself up and became his everything while he became yours. Isnât he your home? Isnât he the one who saved you? Can you really leave someone who cares about you so much?
Your legs move on their own accord. Your heart beats with his and you take tentative steps towards the door. Drift twitters and gives you an encouraging nod, gesturing for you to keep walking.
Why do you want to leave him so badly? Why would you want to throw away this perfect life?
Your little human hands come to rest right over his massive robotic ones. You two are separated, but you think you can feel the warmth coming from him. Drift bonks his forehead against the window anticipatingly. âCome on,â he whispers. âCome on. ItâsâŠokay. You're okay. Please.â
Your hands are human. You will never see another pair again if you return to him.
Your life is not supposed to be perfect. A humanâs life is messy, and disastrous, and chaotic, and beautiful. His life is too, but not in the same way as yours.
âGoodbye, Drift,â you murmur, voice breaking. âLOST LIGHT LIFEPOD 01âŠtake me to Earth.â
The escape pods hums and rumbles. âCommand accepted,â it announces. âPreparing ejection in threeâŠtwoâŠone.â
The last thing you see and hear before the pod lurches forward and rockets out of its dock is Driftâs agonized expression and his wrenching wail.
Your vessel speeds away. You get a fantastic view of the ship in all of its stunning glory. It felt so gigantic when you were inside, but from out here, you can fully comprehend its overwhelming proportions. You watch it rapidly shrink as you gain distance from it, until it's just another speck of light in the universe. And when you canât even see that anymore, you allow yourself to collapse against the floor eagles-spread. You gaze up at the ceiling, feeling surprisingly hollow. There is no victorious sense of triumph, no excitement to return home. You donât even know where home is anymore. Somehow, after everything youâve gone through, youâve come out even more lost than you already were.
The waterworks start shortly after the escape pod jumps into hyperspace. Heaving sobs, messy tears, you lie there and weep to the stars, not noticing when your collar finally stops beeping.

Pas de Deux Masterlist
Din Djarin x f!reader | 18+ | ~40k words | updates on Wednesdays main masterlist | ao3
summary: When Din Djarin â principal dancer at Concordia Ballet Company and generational talent in the classical style â suddenly left CBC and joined the Nevarro Ballet Theater mid-season, it shocked the ballet world. You never would have guessed that he would change your life, too.
full fic tags/warnings (spoilers!): modern AU, ballet AU, fluff, angst, flirting, dancing, lots of ballet terms (Iâll define things/link videos/etc. -- see below), misunderstandings, character study, romance, pet names (sweetheart, beautiful), lots of tension, later: smut, kissing, grinding, fingering, p-in-v sex, creampie, each chapter will have its own tags, Din lifts reader (see note below about reader)
a/n: welcome to the Din ballet fic!! I started writing this in April and itâs finally finished! Iâll post a new chapter every Wednesday, there are 14 total. Thereâs some smut coming but itâll be a while, folks. See my notes below about reader in this fic and ballet in general. Thank you @katareyoudrilling for being the best beta, as always!! This fic is so much better because of you. 𧥠And thank you to @almostfoxglove for reading over it and confirming I didn't forget all my ballet, lol. đ©°
note about reader: in this fic youâre a ballet dancer, first soloist at Nevarro Ballet Theater company. I havenât mentioned the readerâs body size or shape (or hair) basically at all, even to the point of avoiding clothing (except for costumes), but I understand the image that goes along with ballet â I danced for almost 20 years. Din does lift you many times. Please feel free to picture whatever you want, but I know that this might seem more limited. You also have a best friend named Adrian who is in the company with you. I never specified age, but to make first soloist most would be in at least their early 20s. Din is 27.
Chapter list and notes about ballet under the cut! Comment or reblog to join the tag list. đ„°đ©°

Chapter 6 - coming Wed 11/20
...
some notes about ballet: I will share links to videos and such as much as possible, but here are some definitions to get us started â principal, (first) soloist, corps de ballet, variation, and class vs. rehearsal:
Principal - this is the highest level a dancer (of any gender) can reach in a company. Dancers are âpromotedâ through the ranks. Principals usually have exceptional technique and artistry and can perform solos, pas de deux (partnering), headlining and/or the most challenging roles, etc. (e.g., the white (Odette) and black (Odile) swans in Swan Lake, both usually performed by one principal). Sometimes dancers are hired directly in as principals (like Din, in this fic). Smaller companies might have 5-6 principals, while larger ones could have as many as 20. Nevarro is somewhere between medium and large and has around 14 principals, including Din.
First Soloist - not every company has this rank, but itâs in between principal and soloist. Nevarro has 4 but they are counted among the soloists (12-14ish total). Soloists are often understudies for larger parts, and first soloists would do the same. In this fic reader is a first soloist, just promoted at the start of the season.
Soloist - this is sort of a middle level, for dancers who are doing very well and have proven themselves capable of taking on bigger roles. Many ballets have multiple roles, including supporting roles in the narrative, for soloists and principals to showcase many dancersâ talents. A smaller company might have 5-6 soloists, and a larger company might have as many as 20. (Larger companies also do more shows.) Nevarro is somewhere between medium and large and has around 12-14 soloists, including first soloists.
Corps de ballet - this is the lowest/starting level in a company. Itâs where most would start from and has the largest number of dancers â these are the dancers who come out on stage in large groups or form the background unnamed roles in narrative scenes (like a party). Reader started in the corps and was promoted to soloist and then first soloist.
Variation - a solo dance, usually a piece from a larger ballet (e.g., the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker). We say âvariationâ because there are many ballets that have been choreographed differently by multiple people in the ballet world (e.g., there are famous versions of the Nutcracker by Petipa, Gorsky, Balanchine, Nureyev, Baryshnikov⊠and more). So there can be multiple variations of a solo from a single ballet, and more can be created or altered, etc. But in general the term just means solo.
Class vs. rehearsal - most companies distinguish between âclassâ and ârehearsalâ. Class is for the whole company and focused on improving technique. Itâs quick and often repetitive and everyone sort of knows what to do. Most people would have âtheirâ spot at the barre and fall into a typical order for going across the floor. After class, most would go into multiple hours of rehearsal, PT, strength training, etc., depending on whether it was a performance day or not. Most companies are rehearsing for more than one performance at a time, so they might have a longer rehearsal for the show coming up this or next weekend, and a shorter one for another performance a bit farther away. But in the days leading up to a show, that showâs rehearsals would probably take over. This can vary by company. On show days, most would have fewer rehearsals with a 1-2 hour break before the call time to get ready.
Season - companies have 'seasons' which just refers to their plan for shows/schedule for the upcoming year. They might refer to like a fall season and a spring season, or the might have a full year schedule with different parts (fall/winter/spring), or they might have only a spring season that runs into early summer. It depends on the company and the size! In this fic Nevarro has a fall season and a spring season, but they tend to think about it as a full year for contracts/etc. They would have 3-4 big shows planned (think Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, Onegin, etc.) in each part of the season (so, 3-4 in fall and 3-4 in spring). And then they'd fill in the gaps in the schedule with "mixed programs", which are programs with multiple smaller ballets or pieces that feature a lot of dancers. So a mixed program might have a 20 minute Balanchine ballet, a pas de deux, a full corps piece from a larger ballet, and a piece for like 8 dancers. or something. Mixed programs are often when choreographers-in-residence and on staff get to debut their own work.

Violent Heart Masterlist
Full Masterlist of all my work
Joel Miller is not a good man, that he knows like the backs of his calloused hands.Â
He knows loss too, feels it burrowed in the hollow cavity of his chest. Sees it in the face of every little girl he meets.Â
The memories sting.Â
He knows pain, deep in the depths of his character, down to the fundamentals of what makes him something that resembles a human being. The belts, the bigger hands, the harsh words, and then the grief. The recent Bring back my babygirl! The ancient ¥Basta, PapĂ, por favor, no Tommy, no MamĂĄ! ÂĄPor favor no esta noche! The indignity of begging, always reduced to begging to a cruel man, an indifferent doctor, a cruel universe.Â
He knows hard work, how to work with his hands. He knows the grit and grease of labor. Sees the cogs turning in the engines he fixes, relates to them. Feels like he knows them intimately because he is one too, chugging along day after endless day. But no one dares fix Joel Miller.
UntilâŠ
Her name is Erica and sheâd like her front bumper replaced, please. She has long eyelashes and a soothing voice. And she has money too, at least more than he, who is almost broke from the cost of Sarahâs medical bills. She comes with baggage, Joel can tell from looking into her eyes, but then again so does he. And he hasnât been laid in god knows how long.Â
She takes him on a date and he lets her. She reveals she has two kids, but Joel doesnât care. They fuck at her place while the kids are at school and she wants it soft, like her hands, and thatâs how Joel gives it to her.Â
A week later, Joel has moved in, which is good because his rent was due and he couldnât pay it. He still hasnât met the children.
***
Itâs Joelâs day off and heâs sitting on the couch in his new home. His back hurts, but thatâs nothing new. Heâs got an excellent view of their nice, big backyard with a wooden fence. The kind of home he would have liked to have given Sarah. He sighs. Technically, nothing is wrong.
Then he sees it. It takes him a second to realize what is going on. Itâs a whirlwind. He sees the back gate open and two tumbling forms fall over the threshold onto the manicured grass. One form is bigger, a boy of about twelve or thirteen beating the shit out of a much smaller form, fists flying. The other form is a little girl, no more than eight, defending herself like her life depends on it. Perhaps it does with the way heâs going at her.Â
This must be the son, Aiden, and the daughter, Y/N.Â
Heâs a good boy, really, but he has anger issues sometimes. Heâs been through a lot. Thatâs what Erica said, but Joel does not see a good boy. He sees a bully. A disproportionately violent one at that. Nothing that tiny girl could have possibly done could warrant the brutality he sees before him.Â
Anger is something else Joel knows intimately, and that is what he greets when he runs outside to end the fray.
âStop that!â he roars, pulling Aiden off of Y/N.
âWho the fuck are you!?â the boy screams, fury and hatred radiating off of his entire being.Â
He continues thrashing and punching at nothing as Joel restrains him.
âIâm gonna kill her!â he screams, his eyes bulging.
âWhat the hell happened?â Joel growls, still holding onto the livid boyâverging on young man.Â
âShe ripped up my paper!â he bellows. âFor no fucking reason! I worked hard on it!â
âIt was a lie,â she says with so much conviction Joel almost flinches.
He looks down at the little girl, her nose bleeding, her right eye turning purple. She has tears streaked down her face, but she is not crying. Her shirt is ripped. The first thing he thinks of when he sees her is Sarah. Of course itâs Sarah, how could he not think of her? But this little girl is different, has a different look in her eye. This look is much harder and feels like sheâs lived a thousand lifetimes. He thanks god Sarah never looked that way, but somehow he wants to hear about everything this little girl has experienced. Something twangs in Joelâs chest that he has not felt in what feels like an eternity.Â
âIt was not a lie, you stupid bitch whore!â Aiden shouts angrily, still fighting back against Joelâs unrelenting grip. âTake that back!â Â
âNo, you take it back! Dad is not a hero. You couldâve picked anyone to write about and you choose him? After everything heâs done?â she screams herself.
The sound of her voice is powerful but desperate. Joel feels himself needing to know more and bury himself deep inside her experiences.
âSHUT UP!â Aiden yells, finally ceasing his movements.Â
A tear falls from his cheek.Â
âIf I let you go, will you stop whooping your sister?â Joel snaps firmly.
âGet away from me, you stupid cuck!â Aiden curses, turning his energy to Joel. âWho the hell are you to me? Fuck you! Iâm out of here!â
He wriggles out of Joelâs grasp and Joel lets him go and Aiden storms back out the rear gate, slamming it behind him.
âYou alright?â he asks Y/N.
Joel crawls over on his knees, still upright, closer to her.Â
âHad worse,â she shrugs, running a hand through her messed-up hair.Â
She wipes the tears and blood from her cheeks.
Joel shudders to imagine what she means.
âHe always like that?â
âYeah,â she nods. âSo you Momâs new boyfriend?â
âSomething like that,â he nods back. ââM Joel. Joel Miller.â
âIâm Y/N,â she says a bit mournfully. âHere,â she continues suddenly, reaching out a small hand to his cheek. She wipes blood (hers) gently off his stubbly face. âDidnât mean to get ya dirty.â
Joel is nothing short of touched. He wasnât even aware he could still have such a feeling. His cheeks go rosy pink. His heart pulses. He stares at her delicate hands and notices a long, thin scar on her left middle finger.Â
ââS no trouble, sweetheart,â he hears himself reassuring her. âLetâs get you cleaned up. Could even mend your shirt if ya want. Know how to sew and all.â
He reaches out a large hand, but she flinches at the sudden movement. A dull ache wells up in Joelâs chest.Â
âNot gonna hurt you, honey. Swear it.âÂ
He wants with every fiber of his being for her to believe him, for it to be true.Â
She takes his hand.
***
That evening Erica is still not home, working late Joel supposes. It is nine oâclock when Aiden slinks back into the house.
Joel stops him from making his way up the stairs. He is more than familiar with the art of creeping.
âThink you oughta apologize to your sister,â he says as gently as possible. Maybe he can impart some manners onto this unruly child now that heâs calmed down some. âYou beat her real bad. Youâre much bigger than her.â
âIâd do it again,â Aiden hisses, his eyes cold. âIt makes me feel better.â
And then, to Joel, the answer is simple. What do you do with a bully who wonât repent? Fight him back. Show him whoâs boss, whoâs bigger.
He grabs Aiden by the arm in a flash of anger and drags him up the stairs. The boy screams and flails, but that doesnât deter Joel. He brings him to the room he assumes is his, the walls covered in sports posters and memorabilia.
âTake off your shirt,â he growls, a familiar fury pounding inside his chest.
When Aiden protests, Joel does it for him, ripping the kidâs shirt nearly in half. Rage floods through Joelâs veins and he canât exactly place why, but the feeling is very real and bouldering through him at an alarming speed. He knows this feeling, feels strangely at home there.
He undoes his belt and brings the leather end down on Aidenâs back, not the buckle like his father used to do. Joel does have some decency buried deep in his chest. And then he loses himself to the unyielding anger.
âYou get ten,â he snarls. âDonât you lay a hand on your sister again. Is that understood? Now you answer to me.â
No response except for a scream.
âI said , do you understand?â Joel roars, bringing down the belt.
Rage consumes him like a drug. He barely registers what heâs doing. The belt goes down again and again. And somehow, through the screaming and the pain, and the intoxicating feeling of being completely in control for once, Joelâs line of vision wanders to the bedroom door. In all the excitement, it was left ajar and out in the hallway, sitting on her knees is Y/N. Joel immediately expects fear, despair, revulsion. When Tommy would watch him take a beating his face would betray the most acute sense of hopelessness and terror and the waterworks would begin. But Y/N just stares at him unflinchingly, at what heâs doing. She doesnât cry, she simply sees. Too much for a child, and yet, she watches. She does not intervene, doesnât even try to. And for the tiniest moment, her and Joelâs eyes connect, and he feels a sense of calm, of comprehension, of recognition in that uncannily knowing gaze. Her irises sparkle and Joel feelsâŠsomething that he cannot entirely articulate. Seen? Accepted? Understood? Joel knows logically what he is doing is an ugly, vile thing â he has never claimed to be a good man. Practical maybe, but never good. And yet, Y/N sees it â sees him â and she doesnât look away. She cocks her head slightly, and images of Tommy grimacing in revulsion and fear as Joel mercilessly beat up their childhood neighborhood bullies to the point of unconsciousness pop into his mind, of the haunting look in his brotherâs eyes. Even Sarah could not stomach his violent heart when she witnessed him beat up some pervert with a camera that had looked at her funny at the mall. Even though it was for her â to keep her safe. She had stared at him in disgust and pity. She had not seen him then at all.
But now, looking at Y/N, for the briefest moment, Joel can swear he sees something resembling a smile flicker over her serious face. And though it goes as quickly as it comes, he feels the familiar sensation gnawing at the bottom of his stomach: primal and untameable, soft and vulnerable, but fierce and loud at the same time. He feels an inexorable, inescapable sense of care and devotion to this child. But most of all, because she sees him, truly sees him, and does not turn away in disgust, Joel Miller feels the gut-wrenching, unquenchable sensation of love deep in his chest. For the first time since Sarah died on that hospital bed, weak and unwell from the chemo he could not afford, he feels alive .Â
***
Things fall into a tentative routine. Every morning, Joel wakes up in bed beside Erica. They fuck the night before more often than not, but always in that same slow way that doesnât do much for Joel. Itâs enough to get off, sure, she isnât an unattractive woman, but heâs mostly there for the meal ticket and roof over his head. He goes to work at the auto-body repair shop, Erica goes to her job at her law firm. The kids ride the bus to school. He gets home in the evenings before Erica and spends time coexisting with the children. Usually, he kicks back on the sofa, rubbing his sore back, and watches television, minding his own business. Aiden mostly avoids him, doing god knows what in his room. He bullies his sister cruelly and Joel punishes him when he sees fit. Erica knows what he does to Aiden and either doesnât care or approves. He never lays a hand on Y/N though. She warms up to him slowly, cautiously. Most evenings she sits on the far end of the couch and Joel on the other, but as she gets used to him and sees that heâs not a threat, at least to her, she scoots closer.Â
The childrenâs father is no longer in their lives from what Joel can tell, which is perfectly fine with him. When Joelâs heart does not feel full of lead, he plays the guitar. Y/N sits and watches him. She is a quiet child, but unrelentingly brave. When Joel lets the TV blare, he rarely cares to pay much attention these days, she stays and watches with him, no matter what is on and never complains or asks to change the channel. Blockbuster zombie apocalypse movie? She watches. News special on Americaâs most dangerous serial killers? She watches. Documentary on venomous snakes? She watches. Should Joel be letting her watch this crap? Who the fuck knows? He isnât her father. And plus, he wonât admit this to anyone, hardly even himself, but he likes having some company. It makes everything feelâŠless. And he likes that she doesnât try to make him speak. Sometimes there are no words and he thinks Y/N understands this. Unlike Erica who yaps every second of the day. But Joel stays polite and plays along. He has to.
But he will not lie, Aiden gets on his very last nerve. There is something that Joel cannot quite place that makes him feel like he has known this boy his whole life even though they are as familiar as perfect strangers. All siblings fight and rough-house. That is normal. Hell, he and Tommy used to fight rough and tumble all the time. But the way Aiden bullies Y/N is something else entirely. And most times, it is unprovoked. And he is so much bigger than she is, growing bigger by the day.Â
Joelâs beatings have not stopped Aidenâs anger and sadistic attitudes, but they do make sure that he takes some kind of physical consequence for his crimes. It makes Joel feel better and he thinks it makes Y/N feel better too. And some days he gets so fucking mad at Aiden that he thinks not even god could stop his wrath even if the boy turned into Mother Theresa herself! Okay, maybe thatâs extreme, but another part of Joel thinks maybe itâs not. The truth is, though he is loathe to admit it, some days, he is not in control of his anger. Some days he punches so hard, his knuckles bleed and he has to stop for a second to come back to himself. Others he goes so roughly on Aiden that he causes the kid to become bloody and he feels ashamed of what heâs done. But there are other days, very dark days, where he wishes he could do it over and over again. He convinces himself heâs doing it for Y/N and not some other sinister ulterior motive he does not care to dwell onâŠ
One night, a few months into Joelâs new living arrangements, he walks through the upstairs hallway to his and Ericaâs bedroom, passing the closed door to the bathroom that the kids share. He has done this what feels like a thousand times before and doesnât think anything of it until he stops and realizes he hears Y/N singing.Â
âȘâ Someday, my pain / Someday, my pain will mark / YouâŠââ«Â she sings softly.
He can barely hear it over the crash of the water from her shower, but her voice is beautiful. It pulls at Joelâs shrunken heart, deep inside his long-dead chest. Her voice has an eerie quality to it too, almost haunting. Heâs not sure of what song it is, but he finds himself wanting to know. Eventually, she stops, and Joel goes to bed, but her voice echoes in his mind for hours as he lies awake in the dark.
The next day, Joel is sitting on the couch when the kids get home from school. Y/N joins him on the other side of the sofa as usual. They watch reruns of some unfunny family sitcom.
âHeard you singing last night,â he finally grunts unceremoniously.
Y/N goes very still.
âSorry,â she mumbles, avoiding his gaze. âIâll be quieter next time.â
Joel looks over at her. He realizes she looks terrified.
âAinât no problem with it,â he tries to explain, confused. âThought you sounded nice is all.â
âYou tryna trick me?â she stammers, tears collecting in her shimmering eyes.
âWhat? Trick you? What you crying for, honey? You didnât do anything wrong.â
Joel is genuinely flabbergasted.Â
Tears trickle down her cheeks. What has he done this time? he wonders. But he is concerned more than anything. Hell, he hasnât seen her cry like this since the day they met. Not even last week when Aiden slammed her head into the metal oven in the kitchen (luckily it was off or Joel would have really killed him that time). Â
She sniffles, looking conflicted, then collects herself as best she can manage.
âM-my dad didnât like when I would sing. âSpecially if he was in a depoâŠI forget the wordâŠdeponition? Deposition? When he was on the phone for work, I mean. If I was being too loud. Or too shrill. He didnât like that one bit. Heâd get madâŠâ she trails off.Â
âThe way Aiden gets mad?â Joel asks very slowly, not truly wanting to know the answer.
âYeah,â she nods after a while. âExcept heâs a lot bigger. And stronger. HeâŠhe broke my arm once. But it was on accident I think. He got me ice cream after.â
Anger, red and hot, pulses through Joelâs veins. What hadnât this child endured at the hands of angry men?Â
âWhat did your mother do?â he bites out, almost unnaturally calm from trying to control himself.
âWell, most of the time heâd kinda like hit her around, I guess? But the time he broke my arm was the time she made him leave for good and they got a divorce and all. Aiden says itâs my fault he wonât come around anymore. He was so mad. He loves Dad so much. I donât understand it though because even though Dad likes him a lot more than me, Dad would still be so mean to him sometimes. Mom says I donât even know all of it...Promise I wonât bother you with singing though, okay?â
âSweetheart,â Joel says as softly as his blinding rage will permit. Somehow, when heâs with Y/N, he finds he can control himself better. âIâll never get mad at you for singing. Or being too loud. Or anything. Never gonna put my hands on you. Iâm sorry if what I do to Aiden scares you or made you think that I would ever do such a thing to you.â
âIt doesnât scare me,â she shakes her head. âWhen you get rough with Aiden, you do it because he did really bad, to protect me. Itâs like with you thereâs rules that make sense. Aiden chooses to be mean and violent so you choose it back to him. With my dad, it was different. It was like I could breathe wrong and Iâd get in trouble. Get in trouble for things I couldnât control or help. Sometimes I did bad, I know I did, but I also know there were other times where I wasnât hurting anyone and heâd still hurt me so badly. My dad never got mad at Aiden for hurting me though. He thought it was funny, I think. Sometimes heâd kinda like sick him on me. Kinda how you could a dog.â
Joel doesnât know how to respond, doesnât know the right words. He figures he can only show her with his actions who he is and she will just have to learn to trust him. If her father ever enters the house though, he will wring his neck. Thatâs for certain. Thank God he doesnât come around for his sake, Joelâs, and the familyâs.
âI was just thinking,â Joel finally says. âIf ya want, I could learn how to play that song you were singing on my guitar and maybe you could sing it for me sometime?â
âM-maybe we could sing it together?â Y/N asks tentatively, her eyes wide. âSinging in front of other people is kinda scary.â
âI havenât sung in a while,â Joel sighs. âMight be rusty.âÂ
âThatâs okay,â she grins hopefully.Â
Joel wants to take a photo of that rare sight and keep it close for as long as he lives, torn in his pocket or snug in his wallet, he doesnât care.Â
âJoel?â she asks a little cautiously, breaking him from his thoughts. âCan I ask you something?â
ââCourse, kiddo,â he says as gently as he knows how.
âWhoâs Sarah?â
His heart stops. His blood runs cold.Â
âWhat? How did youââ
âYou were talking. In your sleep yesterday,â she says, shrinking away a little and Joel feels sorry for scaring her again. âWhen we were watching Dexter . Well, you fell asleep right before. You were snoring and all, but you were also talking and mumbling that name. You sounded sad and scared.â
Joel should definitely not have allowed her to watch that! But that is hardly the point right now.Â
His heart squeezes so tight it burns. What was there to say about Sarah â the entire reason his life had had any purpose? His perfect babygirl? The light of his life?Â
He could lie. So easily too and Y/N would never know. He could say nothing at all. Hasnât even told Erica about her yet. Hardly ever speaks to anyone about her these days.
And yetâŠ
âShe was my daughter,â he hears himself say softly. âSheâŠgot sick. Died of leukemia a while back. She was twelve.â
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the wallet he was just thinking about. Inside is a tiny school photo of Sarah â the last one she ever took. Itâs faded a little, but sheâs still smiling so big she could block out the sun. He shows it to Y/N.
âIâm sorry, Joel,â she says and she really does look sorry.Â
Not the way his co-workers and customers say it â almost as a reflex â to fill the void in the conversation. Her eyes are shimmering. Â
âNothinâ to do about it now,â he shrugs, running his thumb over the photo paper, softened with age. âBut she was so damn special. My whole world.â
He has learned to repress the tears, not to show weakness, that is not hard. Not anymore. But the anger that broils up inside him â the injustice of it all â how he was unable to help her. Unable to save her. He feels almost like a child again, powerless in an unforgiving, unrelenting world. He wants to fight back!
He is so angry he begins to shake and his hands clench into fists.Â
He wants to flip over the fucking coffee table â fling it across the room! He wants to punch in the glass of the flickering TV screen until his fist is broken! He wants toâHe wantsâ
He just wants his babygirl backâŠ
A sob, small and foreign rises in his throat, but he pushes it down.Â
He thinks Y/N knows though. Can see the vulnerability in his eyes.
She reaches out a small hand and touches his fist, pushes it down gently into the soft fabric of the couch so heâll stop shaking. It doesnât entirely work, but he thinks he appreciates the effort.
âI donât know if this is the right thing to say,â she begins a bit skittishly, still not entirely trusting the hulking, raging man above her. âBut I think I would have liked to have been her friend.â
And for the first time since Sarah died, Joel sobs .Â
Y/N pops up from the couch and Joelâs heart cries out louder in his chest for her to come back, donât leave me too as he tries to suck the tears back in. It doesnât work though and liquid gushes down his cheeks. He doesnât think he can take the rejection, the loss of her. But thankfully, she returns just as quickly as she went with a handful of tissues stuffed into her small fist.Â
âHere, Joel,â she offers. âHere. Donât cry.â
Joel does cry though. Heâs ashamed heâs broken down in front of this literal child, and he doesnât let out much noise, but he doesnât take the tissues either. He canât.Â
Sheâs so sweet though, or maybe itâs because she is truly afraid of him now, of his wrath, heâll never really know, but she frowns and reaches out a little hand, the one with the scar on the middle finger, and tries to wipe up the tears.
The paper of the tissue tickles his cheeks.
âShouldnât havtaâŠâ he tries.
âDidnât mean to make youâŠâ she answers.
A pause.
âYou didnât, honey. That was all me,â he assures her finally.
She lets out a sigh of relief and soaks up the last of the salt water from his face, brushes the tissue gently against his nose. It tickles, causes him to snort. He smirks a little.
She smiles back shyly, she canât help it, he can tell.Â
âYou know,â he says thoughtfully after a few moments of silence, sighing deeply. âI reckon she wouldâve wanted to be your friend tooâŠâ
***
A few months roll by. Things are virtually the same except Y/N seems more comfortable around him now. Maybe itâs because she saw his weakness up close and personal, his Achilles heel ââ knows how to coax it out of him now if she has to. Or maybe itâs because she truly trusts him. Whatever the case, she sits closer to him on the couch now, still giving him a respectful foot of distance though of course.Â
Once in a blue moon, she sings for him and he tries to keep up with the lilting sound of her high voice. She says she likes his low, deep voice just fine, itâs just she still gets nervous singing in front of other people so itâs still a rare occasion. His favorite is when she sings solo and he gets to strum along for her and really listen. Sometimes her voice cracks in a very specific way that some might find to be a flaw, but Joel would never.Â
Aiden makes fun of them and calls them the âVon Trapp Family Singers.â Are they a family? Joel wonders.
One day after work, Joel goes to the library to find some sheet music for a song Y/N likes. She treasures the photo-copied paper like a gift as Joel deciphers the notes he can actually read for her. She color-codes each one carefully in magic marker so she can remember the differences between them.Â
The next day, Aiden burns it up with a lighter he has acquired from God knows where. Joel confiscates it â the last thing he needs is this particular child setting fires â and It doesnât end well for Aiden. He limps for damn near a week. But some days, when Aiden is calm, he joins Y/N and Joel in front of the TV if a sports game is on. He doesnât sit on the couch though, just the floor. He doesnât say much to them but does get invested in the good and bad plays of each game, gets sore if his team is losing. On one particularly good day, when the Rangers hit a grand slam, and Joel was actually paying attention, he and Aiden actually high-five. Â
Things are goingâŠwell? Is that the right word? It is a foreign concept for Joel. For Christmas, he gets Y/N guitar, Aiden a book on boxing so maybe he will redirect his anger into somewhere productive, and Erica a spa-day kit for 20% off that he saw at CVS (he never claimed to know what women want). Aiden is neutral, surprised, he thinks, that Joel even got him a present. Erica is actually appreciative and returns the favor with some new socks and underwear.Â
âA practical gift for a practical man,â she says, kissing him on the forehead.Â
Joel supposes he appreciates the gesture.Â
Y/N, though, is thrilled.
âThank you, Joel! Got you something too,â she says excitedly, bouncing up and down in her red and white pajamas.
âThatâs not necessary,â Joel chides, leaning over to pick up the wrapping paper that was strewn across the living room floor.Â
But secretly he is curious. He didnât think she even had any money of her ownâŠ
Aiden opens the cover of the boxing book with disinterest, eyeing the new guitar distastefully.Â
Y/N jumps up, leaves the room, and returns with a small plastic baggie in her hands. Inside are little, different bits of colored plastic clumsily and haphazardly cut into tiny, sharp-looking, badge-shaped pieces. One he recognizes is from the top of a yogurt container he put into the recycling the other day, another one from the top of a Gatorade bottle.Â
âHere ya go!âÂ
She shoves the plastic bag into his large hands enthusiastically.
âThank you,â Joel responds, still unsure what he was given.
It reminds him of when Sarah was young and would come home with some sort of abstract macaroni painting from kindergarten and he would nod and smile knowingly when she explained that of course it was Two dinosaurs getting married, Dad. Duh!
âYou could try one on my new guitar,â she offers, a little disappointed when he doesnât have more of a reaction. âYou said you lost most of yoursâŠâ
Joel immediately feels guilty and then it clicks. She tried to make him guitar picks! His heart clenches with emotion he can not quite identify.Â
He pulls a little orange one out of the bag and accidentally nicks the edge of his finger. Because of the way it was cut, no doubt with uncoordinated childâs hands and a pair of scissors, the edges are much too sharp to serve as an actual guitar pick without damaging guitar strings or apparently Joelâs finger. Dumb kid. But heâs beyond honored anyone would take the time to do such a thoughtful thing for him.Â
He hisses softly and sucks the blood off his finger.
âOops,â she says, horrified. âShoot. Sorry, Iââ
ââS no trouble,â he interjects dismissively. âLove âem. Was my fault anyway. Iâmma be honest with you though, sweetheart; donât think the guitar strings can handle these babies.â
âOh,â she says softly, trying to keep the disappointment out of her voice. âOh, yeah, okay...â
She deflates, looking down at the carpet.
Joel selfishly lets her be sad for a beat before swooping back in to be the one to save the day.
âBut hereâs what Iâll doâŠâ
She looks back up at him with an intoxicating kind of hope in her eyes.
He takes his wallet out of his back pocket and slips the orange pick into the photo slot next to the picture of Sarah. He returns the wallet back into his pants.Â
Y/N positively beams. Brighter than the sun, even, Joel thinks.
Aiden yawns purposefully loudly and rolls his eyes. Erica looks touched and maybe even a little proud of her choice in men. But Joel didnât do it for them. The only reaction in the world he cares about is hers.
Y/N is still grinning, bouncing on the balls of her feet again. But then she does something new: she leans in and hugs him, wrapping her little arms around his waist, burying her face in his flannel shirt, pressing against his tummy.
The world stops for Joel.Â
At first, he just hangs there limply, awkwardly. Literally forgets what one is supposed to do in such a situation, but then instinct kicks in and he wraps his arms around her too and squeezes ever so slightly. Itâs a more cautious hug than Sarah would have given him â she would have squeezed him half to death â but Y/N is still holding him. Someone small and warm is holding onto him for the first time in what feels like an eternity. And just like that his past is rhyming with his present and it is the most beautiful sound Joel Miller has ever heard.Â
Joel Miller is not a good man, no, but maybe, just maybe, he thinks he could be one for Y/N.Â
***
Joel tries to be good. He does. His first order of business is stop beating on Aiden â especially in front of Y/N. No amount of violence towards the kid seems to do any good anyway â he still hurts her. And Joel is sick of bandaging her up and wiping the blood from her cheeks; something has to change. Not that he wouldnât do it a thousand times if he had to. Heâd do anything for the girl, that he is sure of. And the truth is, Aiden is close to getting big enough to really fight back. And Joel knows if Aiden really lays a hand on him, heâs not sure he will be able to control himself enough to not inflict permanent damage. And he doesnât want that. Truly.
So at first, Joel thinks about having Erica send him away to a wilderness camp for troubled children or some such program he sees mentioned on reruns of Dr. Phil. She has the money to do it too. But she wonât send him away. She refuses, loves him too much. Protecting Y/N seems as far down on her list of priorities as ever. She is useless at disciplining him, always has been, so it is up to Joel to find another solution. So the next thing he tries is to set the boy up in boxing classes. This is risky since it might just teach him new ways to hurt Y/N, but at least it will be a place to direct his anger.
It works for a while, to his and Y/Nâs immense relief, but that leaves Joel nowhere to take out his anger. He tries to ignore it at first and shove it down, but it starts to come out in little ways. At work, he barks at a customer who locks his keys in the car heâs trying to fix. At home, he shouts at Erica for missing Y/Nâs school play. The rage leaks out of him, pours off his entire being. He tries jerking off more to increasingly violent porno magazines to calm himself down since Erica is sure not satisfying him. It doesnât do enough though, not really. Finally, he tries boxing at the local gym himself, but it is not enough either. Boxing has rules. The first sorry sucker he gets in the ring with, he beats to the point of unconsciousness. Two men have to pull him off to get him to stop. They kick him out immediately.
So Joel tries going to the bar after work with the guys from the shop and drinking a little to take the edge off. That actually helps somewhat. Heâs careful about it, never comes home drunk, never drinks in front of Erica or the kids. But what helps the most are the bar fights. Heâs careful about that too. Only fights the assholes, which there are many of. Switches up the bars he goes to. But some motherfucker slaps a girl's ass without permission? Joelâs on him in seconds, watching like a predator from the shadows. Some dude throws a drink in the bartenderâs face? Joel clobbers him half to death. And sometimes? People in the bar applaud him, even cheer him on. Itâs probably because theyâre intoxicated, but thatâs how he justifies it to himself like heâs some kind of goddamn vigilante. Deep down he knows he is something much, much uglier. But at least heâs not doing it to Aiden, a child. And more importantly, at least it is away from Y/N.

One day, Y/N falls sick. It starts out as what seems like a cold with a nasty cough. Kids are little germ factories, Joel knows that. He tells himself it is nothing to worry about â that all kids get sick sometimes. The first few days she lies on the couch like a zombie, coughing incessantly into her elbow and sleeping a lot. She snores ever so slightly which he finds charming. Joel stays home from work with her because Erica has to be in court and they watch lots of nature documentaries and daytime talk shows.Â
Then the coughing gets worse and Joelâs brain stops functioning properly and he has trouble explaining why. He feels more on edge, more agitated. Erica takes Y/N to the doctor and comes back with a diagnosis: walking pneumonia. Nothing too serious, lots of kids get it. She is prescribed antibiotics and is supposed to drink lots of fluids and wait it out. But when Erica tells Joel the news of what the doctor told her he is holding a glass of water and it shatters in his large hand, cutting the skin of his middle finger.
âFuck!â he yells.Â
And he cannot articulate precisely why, but he feels good that there is a justified reason to yell.Â
Erica wipes his hand and cleans the glass up.
âGotta go to court again today, honey,â she says like everything is fine and normal. âCan you look after her today? Call in sick? Sheâs in bed. Going through it.â
Joel nods and she is gone like this whole thing is nothing. Like her precious, living breathing child is not suffering in the room above his head.
He climbs the stairs and enters Y/Nâs room. He doesnât often spend much time there. The walls are painted pink and differently shaped dolls and stuffed animals line the white vanity across from her canopied bed. He does not think he has ever seen Y/N play with any of those specific toys, come to think of it, or express any interest in the color pink (no doubt Ericaâs secret passion for interior design rearing its ugly head). He vows silently, one day, to paint the walls any color she wants.Â
But there she is, sprawled out in her bed coughing a nasty cough. Something shifts inside Joel at the sound. She looks unwell and weak and so small.Â
âHey, honey,â he says softly, almost robotically.Â
Something is not right. He sits on the edge of her bed, feels her burning forehead. He takes her temperature gently with the thermometer that goes in her ear. He feels that weird sensation like heâs been here before even though he has hardly ever entered her bedroom. One hundred and four degrees Fahrenheit it reads when it beeps. Joel swallows a lump in his throat that he didnât realize was there. Â
She coughs pathetically. She looks out of it, her eyes far away. Joelâs heart throbs painfully.
Y/N is mumbling something incoherent now. Joel leans a little closer so he can decipher the words.
He makes out something like:Â No, Dad. Donât. Stop, please. Please, not tonight.Â
Joel stops breathing.Â
She must be delirious from the fever.Â
And then sheâs crying. Quietly, but crying all the less. And this time, unlike every time he has seen her tears before, she sobs. Actually makes noise, her chest wracked with it.Â
Then she coughs so hard she starts to wheeze and it hits Joel so ferociously he practically loses his grip on reality.
When Sarah was sick she had leukemia, a blood cancer. And cancer requires treatment. Expensive treatment. But of course, Joel hadnât cared. He would have sold every item he owned to save his child, would have traveled to the ends of the earth if he had to, done literally any and everything in his power to protect her. So he paid for most of her chemotherapy with high hopes. Desperate hopes, but high ones. It had been her best shot at getting better according to the doctors. And the thing about chemo is, the side effects can literally be deadly. Joel is not a man of science, but the doctor explained that those drugs kill the bad cells that make up the cancer, but also the good ones. It fucks with your immune system, weakens you. Makes you lose your hair, vomit, and or be so weak you can barely walk. All that happened to Sarah. Joel felt like a traitor taking her to those treatments. Logically, he knew they were necessary, but he always felt like he was the one doing those awful things to her. It eviscerated him, left him raw and empty, and helpless like a child.
But in the end, it was the pneumonia that killed her. Her body couldnât fight it off. Sheâd died in a hospital bed, Joel at her side, holding her hand, unable to do a single damned thing except scream .
Y/N coughs again, simultaneously pulling him from his thoughts and throwing him back into them. His heart is pounding in his chest to Do something! But there is nothing to be done, nothing he can do! Why canât he ever seem to protect her?
She looks up just then, notices him for the first time since he entered the room, still crying feebly.
âHe hurt me,â she whispers up at him, her eyes glazed over and glistening with tears. She reaches out for a handful of his dark blue work shirt and pulls it tightly to her. âHe hurt me. And I couldnâtâI c-couldnâtâŠâ
And then he is holding her, not quite sure how, but he is holding her trembling body to his chest and he will not let her go. Not for the world, not for anyone. He will not lose this child. He wraps his arms around her, holds tight. He will keep her safe, no matter the cost.Â
âItâs okay, babygirl,â he whispers. âI got you.â

Joel and Erica get married that spring. They agree on a private ceremony in front of a judge with only Y/N and Aiden in attendance. When Aiden hears the news, he throws a fit, He breaks dishes and punches a hole in the TV set which sets Joelâs teeth on edge. But Y/N is overjoyed. In the end, he and Joel adorn what Joel considers monkey suits and Erica wears a beautiful white dress that accentuates her figure. Y/N wears a frilly pink dress and carries a basket of pink roses. Joel never thought heâd be a married man and yet here he is. He imagines Sarah in attendance too and his heart aches. This is his life now.Â
He refuses to wear a ring.

Time passes. Long stretches of time where things feelâdare he think itânormal.
Aiden doesnât beat Y/N, but begins to get into fights at school. Joel saves his violence for the bar scene which he begins frequenting more often.Â
Erica starts working later, gets promoted in her job. Fucks Joel less and less, not that he cares very much.Â
Joel goes to back-to-school nights and family cookouts. He teaches Y/N to play the guitar and how to fix car motors. In both these activities, she is no natural, but she tries her best and listens well. She smiles more than heâs ever seen. He drives her to sleepovers and Aiden to boxing practice. He paints her bedroom walls orange.
Things feel stable.
Two Christmases pass.
And then things take a downturn.
***
One evening, Joel returns home from work later than usual. When he arrives home in his truck, he notices an expensive sports car in the driveway. Erica has affluent friends, sure, but heâs never seen this particular car before. Something about that doesnât sit right with him.
He opens the front door with a creak and Erica intercepts him before he can make it to the dining room table for dinner. She presses a hand to his forearm bulking with muscle.
âDonât freak out,â she whispers urgently.Â
Joel stops and hears the sounds of people eating dinner and a manâs raspy voice speaking.
âFreak out about what?â
He makes his way past her to the dining room. He sees a man he does not immediately recognize sitting at the head of the table, Y/N is flanking one side of the table next to him and Aiden the other. He is conventionally handsome and wearing an expensive pinstripe suit. When he looks up, he smirks at Joel. Joel thinks he looks kind of like Aiden if you were to squint. And then he understands who he is.
âThe fuck are you doing in my house?â he growls, lunging forward.
â Your house?â the man smirks again, unflinching.Â
He looks Joel over, examining his mechanicâs uniform, the grease stain on Joelâs cheek.Â
Erica grabs Joel. She pulls him back out into the hallway.
âTell him heâs not welcome here,â Joel snarls, trying to get a look at the man over Ericaâs shoulder.Â
She pushes him backward gently. Instantly, he is worried for Y/N, for all intents and purposes alone in there with the man who abused her and this entire goddamn family for that matter. He catches a glance at her and she looks terrified . Aiden, conversely, Joel sees, looks like he just won the lottery, staring up at his dad in adoration. Joel doesnât think he has ever seen him look so happy.
âThis is important to them,â Erica snaps quietly. âThatâs their father. He has a rightââ
âGet him out of here or Iâll kill him,â Joel says deadly quietly. âHe what? Doesnât show up for over three years and you think thatââ
âI know that he has a right to speak to them. I am their mother and they need a sense of closure. Aiden needs this. So you will sit down at that table and have an amicable dinner or so help me God, Joel.â
Erica never speaks to him like this. He is shocked.
âFine,â he snarls after a while, his chest heaving.Â
He can hardly think straight while Y/N is in there alone with that excuse for a man. Better he be close to protect her instead of thrown out of the house.
He walks back in with Erica, who sits next to Y/N, leaving Joel nowhere to go but next to Aiden.
âIâm Derek,â the childrenâs father says, leaning over the food Erica has prepared to shake Joelâs hand.Â
Joel doesnât take it.
âAnd you must be Joe? The new husband.â
âJoel,â he replies shortly.
He looks over at Y/N who is trying to be brave, he can tell, but deep in her eyes, looks petrified.
They eat dinner in tense silence until Derek breaks it and begins bragging about his golf club record, the latest client heâs been representing, his new girlfriend, Sylvia.
âSee, sheâs helping me become a better man,â Derek insists with a forkful of steak. âI know I havenât always beenâŠthe greatest of fathers or partners, but she really convinced me coming here would be a good thing. That it would be healing. You guys will meet someday, Iâm sure.â
Joel leans forward toward Derek, reeling at the idea that this man could possibly be back in the picture of his familyâs life, but Erica reaches under the table and squeezes his knee in a death grip and Joel holds himself back.
Aiden hangs on his fatherâs every word. Erica looks somewhat intrigued after she lets go of her husbandâs leg. Y/N screams silently at Joel, who tries his best to communicate without words that he will keep her safe.
âAnd I know Iâve missed quite a bit,â Derek continues. âWhich is why I brought these. Sylviaâs idea, really.â
He reaches down toward his feet and pulls out a fancy golden gift bag and takes out two presents. He hands one to Aiden and the other one to Y/N. Aiden rips his open excitedly. Inside is a hunting knife with a red handle.Â
Great, Joel thinks.
Y/N doesnât move though, stopped like a deer in the headlights.
âOpen it, girl,â Derek sneers.
She looks over at Joel.Â
âGo on, baby,â he says softly, heat pumping through his blood.
She unwraps the pink wrapping paper and finds a Barbie doll in a clear plastic box. Joel has never seen her play with dolls at all come to think of it.Â
âIsnât that thoughtful?â Erica smiles cautiously.
âThanks, Dad,â Aiden says enthusiastically. âCanât wait to show the guys at ROTC.â
âGood for you, son,â Derek grins. âServing our country is the highest of honors.â
Joel suddenly tries not to think about Tommy blasted to bits halfway across the world in Afghanistan, his body in such bad condition all that he got left of his baby brother was a finger and two bent dog tags. Â
Aiden beams.
âWell,â Derek barks, eyeing Y/N distastefully. âArenât you going to say anything?â he taunts.Â
Joel sees where Aiden gets it from. This arrogant, bullying behavior. He shifts in his seat, ready to strike if necessary.
âThanks,â she says very quietly.Â
Derek grins in a kind of satisfaction that makes Joel want to go over there and punch his daylights out. He almost does too until Erica kicks his shin beneath the table and he controls himself.Â
Y/N frowns. She looks over at Joel, then back at her father. Something ripples across her face, but it goes so quickly Joel cannot assign any meaning to it. But she looks ever so less scared somehow, more angry almost, but not quite.
And then after about ten minutes of somewhat peaceful eating and Derek making Aiden and Erica laugh with stupid anecdotes from his court cases while Joel and Y/N exchange looks, it happens.
Y/Nâs hand reaches forward and knocks against her glass of coke. It goes flying over in Derekâs direction and drenches him in the sticky liquid, staining his suit.
âSorry, Dad!â she squeaks immediately. âOh my god, Iââ
âYou little slut!â he roars in response, almost like a reflex, backhanding Y/N across the face with lightning speed and accuracy. âDo you know how much this fucking suit cost!?â
The force of the blow is so strong it knocks Y/N from her chair onto the ground.
Before a coherent thought can even go through Joelâs head he is on the other man, slamming him up against the wall behind him by the throat.
âJoel, donât you dare!â Erica yells, but it is too late.
Joel sees red and canât exactly recall what he does next, but it goes something like this:
He squeezes around Derekâs throat and bangs his head backward against the wall a few times. The other man tries to get a punch in, but Joel ducks and kicks him in the balls. Derek crumples to the ground and Joel gives his chest another hard kick. He whines pathetically.Â
Aiden gets up then, but Erica uses all of her strength to pull him back before he can get involved in the mix. He resists, shouts something that Joel cannot make out, but Erica manages to keep him from the two men with a great amount of effort and struggle.Â
Derek is on the floor now and Joel is straddling him, landing punch after ruthless punch down onto his head. His nose begins to bleed, but Joel keeps punching.Â
âHOW DARE YOU?â he roars down at the trembling, gushing man on the floor.
There is so much blood splurting all over his face, dripping down onto his expensive stained suit, and the floor that Derek almost stops looking like Derek. Joel sees Aidenâs face in his features. And then there is so much blood that it could be anyoneâs face screaming back at him for mercy. It could be those creepy, asshole men at the bar. It could be the much bigger kid who always used to beat up Tommy every day in the schoolyard. It could be that damned head doctor who let his babygirl die. It could even be his no-good, bastard, alcoholic papĂĄÂ .Â
He turns his head ever so slightly while still delivering punches. Erica has Aiden in a bear hug. She is screaming for Joel to stop. Aiden is bellowing something that sounds like, You bastard, Iâll kill you! Get off of him! Iâll kill you! And then Joel sees Y/N still on the floor from where she was knocked. Her face is still turned in the same direction it was slapped into, but she is not crying or screaming. Her eyes are dancing.
They connect with Joelâs.Â
He knows he is supposed to be a good man for her, but she doesnât seem to mind his deviant behavior. He stops then, though, because otherwise he thinks he will kill the man and he doesnât want Y/N to experience that. He steals a glance at her again and she looks ever so slightly disappointed, but her wide-eyed expression tells Joel that Christmas has come early this year. She sends him a look of gratitude and Joel thinks that maybe he did act like a good man for her after all in the case of this vile, pathetic person who is supposed to be her father.Â
Finally, Joel stands up. He walks over and reaches out a bloody hand to Y/N and pulls her gently from the ground. Even after sheâs standing upright she doesnât let go of him.
Derek gets up after a while, wiping his sleeve over his face to try to tame the excess blood. Joel thinks that maybe he broke the manâs nose. He feels not a shred of remorse. The other man spits on the ground at Joelâs feet and leaves without saying goodbye to his ex-wife or children, slamming the front door behind him. Â
Erica is not pleased with Joelâs behavior. Aiden is shouting and screaming. He breaks a plate by throwing it onto the floor with a loud crash. Joel leans over and grabs the knife his father gave him and sticks it in his front pocket so Aiden doesnât feel tempted to use it. Y/Nâs small hand is still in his.Â
When Aiden is coherent enough to listen to instructions and all screamed out, Erica sends the children upstairs to bed.Â
Joel tries to walk Y/N up to bed to tuck her in, but Erica stops him.
â Not you,â she growls at Joel.Â
She is livid in a way Joel has never seen before. For a moment, he seriously wonders if this is the end of their relationship.Â
The kids scamper upstairs and Erica yells at Joel for ages.Â
At a certain point, he stops listening. He doesnât try to argue back. Doesnât care to. He is actually calm now, though his chest is still heaving from the exertion, more calm than heâs been in ages. He knows that she will never understand why he had to do what he did to Derek. She lives in another reality where his violence is not acceptable if she has to bear witness to it. She doesnât care about Y/N the way she is supposed to. Never has. Doesnât know or see her. Not the way Joel does. Has too big a soft spot for Aiden. Tolerated Joelâs violence toward him though like a coward. Maybe deep down she knew he needed some kind of discipline? But when Joel lays a hand on her scumbag of an ex-husband thatâs whatâs too far? When he hurt her own daughter? When Joel himself was responsible for hurting her own precious son? Where was her outrage then?Â
But he voices none of this. Pushes it down. He cannot lose her. Not this house, not the kids, not the financial security. Never Y/N.Â
Erica banishes him to the couch for the first time in their relationship. Joel doesnât mind.Â
Hours later, late into the night, he hears soft footsteps walking down the stairs. He rolls over on the sofa to see who is approaching. He wonders if it is Erica there to apologize because he knows her well enough to know by now that she will forgive him eventually. She will forgive anything it seems. But it is not Erica at all.
âJoel?â a little voice asks quietly. âYou up?â
âYeah, baby,â he replies. âYou okay? Iâm so sorry he pulled that shit on you.â
Y/N shrugs.Â
âSorry IâŠI didnât stop it before it happened,â he admits like a secret.Â
She shrugs again.
ââM sorry she made you sleep on the couch and all,â she replies.
ââS no trouble. I donât mind.â
âBut itâs my fault you got in trouble in the first place.â
âY/N, you ainât done nothing wrong,â Joel tells her seriously.Â
Itâs hard to see her in the dark, but he thinks sheâs grimacing guiltily.Â
âI just wanted to sayâŠâ she begins hesitantly. âThanks for like sticking up for me and all that. YouâŠyouâre the only one who does.â
Joel hides a smile from his babygirl. Something inside him likes being that person for her, he cannot lie to himself. Likes being the one she can count on.Â
âYou were like some MMA fighter,â she continues. âBut then all the blood was like in The Shining .â
One day, not long ago, Joel had fallen asleep on the couch when The Shining came on and Y/N had watched the entire thing out of her own free will. That movie had frightened the shit out of him as a kid!
âIâm sorry if I scared you, sweetheart.â Â
âYou didnât,â Y/N replies matter-of-factly. âI wasnât scared of what you did for a secondâŠI know thatâs messed up, but I kinda wanted you toâŠâÂ
She trails off.
Joel understands.Â
âI kinda, please donât get mad, but I sorta knocked the cup over on purpose,â she admits.
Joelâs eyebrows go way up on his forehead in surprise.
âItâs just,â she babbles quickly in self-defense. âMom and Aiden were like giggling and hanging onto every dumb thing he said and it scared me. I thought they might let him keep coming around and start liking him again. And I also knew he hadnât changed too. I could tell on account of how he was looking at me in that same mean way he always did. And I also knew youâd save me like you always do and you had this angry look in your eyes. I knew what you would do. I could feel it in my gutâŠâ
âYou little shit!â Joel smirks.Â
He has to give her credit where credit was due â that was incredibly shrewd. Dangerous, but oh so clever. She played everyone in that room like a fiddle. Joel is honestly kind of proud.
âYou mad?â she asks tentatively, biting her bottom lip.
âNah,â Joel grins. âAt you? Never. You shouldnât have had to let him hurt you to get him away from you, but you protected yourself and thatâs the most important thing. If I had to do it over, I would.â
Y/N smiles.Â
Sheâs a fucked up little girl, but Joel is a fucked up man, and they both live in a fucked up world.
âGot your back,â he grunts. âRemember that. Now scurry along back to bed and get some rest.â
âGânight, Joel.â
***Â
Time passes.Â
Erica forgives Joel of course and Derek never comes around again.Â
Y/N and Aiden grow bigger.Â
They go on camping trips and Joel teaches Y/N and Aiden how to fish. Never thought he would see the day where Aiden was willingly listening to his instructions, but the day comes anyway. Of course, the boyâs favorite part is cutting up the bloody fish guts like Joelâs used to be as a child. Y/N likes the part where you wait for the fish to bite. She sits next to Joel on the grassy river bank, the sun shining down on the lazy lake they are camping by, and smiles softly to herself.
Another two Christmases pass.
All the while, Joel is visiting the bar more and not necessarily to drink. His violent streak is getting worse somehow. He thinks, though heâs no goddamn shrink, that it might have something to do with the fact that he and Erica are not having any sex. Their relationship is still amicable and she is still sweet to him, and he tries his best to be to her too, but in the bedroom is mostly crickets. Joel jerks off, of course he does, but his fist is no substitute for a warm body.Â
Joel causes such a scene at the bar he frequents the most, that the cops have to be called. He ditches the place before he can get arrested, but heâs getting worried about his behavior. Something must change.
So then come the women. They practically throw themselves at him. Never has he thought he was that attractive until women literally offer themselves up to him on a silver platter after saving them from some drunken creep. Joel had always declined until now. But Joel is only a man. He fucks them rough and dirty (with their permission of course â Joel is not a good man, and a lot of things, but he isnât a fucking rapist) in the bathroom stalls, in the alleyways. In the moment it feels good and helps him let off some steam, but after he feels guilty. And it doesnât satisfy him much more than with Erica if he really thinks about it. One thing that Erica has over these women who let him act out his violent self is the look of devotion in her eyes. Thatâs always the thing that gets Joel to cum in the end when he does get to fuck her.
He would leave her, she isnât that special to him if heâs honest, but she offers him a twofold sense of stability he has never known in his life. The first fold is the financial stability that has evaded him all of his days. The second is the feeling of family . Something so mundane and normal. And despite her flaws, she treats him so well â better than Sarahâs mother ever did. And most importantly, he doesnât think he could leave Y/N. Not now. Not when she looks at him like he is the universe. Not even Aiden whom Joel has (begrudgingly) begun to see the traces of himself in.Â
***
This particular muggy, summer day begins normally. Joel goes to work, fixes a Chevy Impalaâs fluid tank. And then he walks in with an old, beat-up Honda Accord.Â
His name is David, and Joel has heard of him through murmurings and bar stories and whispers at community barbeques. Heâs a notorious neighborhood legend, whose house kids cross the street to avoid. He is the boogeyman at the end of the cul-de-sac.Â
The story is, though through the many versions Joel has heard some of the details get muddled, that he kidnapped and raped a twelve-year-old girl (that part all versions agree on). Some say he was supposed to have ten years in prison, others say twenty, but whatever the number he got out in one for âgood behavior.â In jail, he supposedly devoted his life to God and became a preacher.
Joel doesnât want to help him, but his boss hisses at him that money is money and heâs going to serve the man whether Joel likes it or not.Â
Thereâs something wrong with the exhaust pipe, so Joel bends down and takes a look at it. He opens the trunk and sees a box of Bibles next to a plastic bag of zip ties. His blood runs cold.
âThe fuck is this shit doing in your car?â he growls, referring to the zip ties.
âThe Bible is the word of God, Mr. Miller,â David replies, eyeing Joelâs nametag. âWould you like one? Iâm always trying to spread The Good Word.âÂ
âYou know thatâs not what Iâm talking about,â he spits, looking over to make sure his boss is not watching.Â
âIf you must know, though itâs none of your business, those zip ties are for my garden to help hold up my plants. They are remarkably useful,â David smiles sickeningly politely.Â
And thatâs when Joel loses it just a little.
He picks up the ties and pockets them.
âListen here, you pedophile piece of shit,â he snarls. âIf I hear about you stepping one goddamned pinky-toe out of lineââ
âHey, Joel!â A little voice calls.
The breath is knocked from Joelâs lungs.
Y/N bounds up to them holding a brown paper bag out of nowhere.Â
âYou forgot your lunch! Mom dropped me off so you could have it. Itâs tuna though. I hate hate tuna. But youâll eat anything so I hope itâs good for you at least,â she babbles.
âBaby,â Joel says very quietly, his heart thrumming in his ribcage. âRight nowâs not a great time. Why donât you go on home and Iâll catch up with you later?â
Then she notices David. By the fact that she doesnât immediately leave, Joel determines she has no clue who he is.
âHello, young lady,â David smiles, eyeing Joel knowingly. âIâm Pastor David.â
âUh, hi,â she says.
Joel thinks he might actually kill him.
âWould you like something to take home with you?â he asks.
Y/N blinks in confusion as Joel steps in front of her.
âSheâll be going now, wonât you Y/N?â Joel suggests dangerously.
âHere,â David says before she can respond.
He hands her a black-covered bible.
Y/N takes it, looks at the cover, and laughs. Joel and David both look down at her in surprise.
âNo offense, âPastor David,ââ she smirks. âBut I donât believe in that shit. Here, you can have it back,â she offers.
He takes back the book somewhat defeatedly. And Joel grins internally.
âBye, Joel,â she tells him, still smirking.Â
She side-hugs him quickly and returns to Ericaâs car.Â
âHow dare you even look at herââ Joel booms at the sad, pathetic excuse for a man once she is out of earshot.Â
His hands are clenched into fists and they are shaking. Every part of him is on fire.Â
âI think Iâll be going now,â David interjects lightly. âI can see my business isnât welcome here. You have a beautiful daughter, Mr. Miller. Quite a mouth on her. Shame if something were to happen to herâŠOh, the things someone like me could make her believeâŠâ
Joel reaches back his fist to punch, to pummel, to kill, but suddenly, another hand grabs his and holds it in place. Joelâs boss has materialized behind him and is holding him back. Good thing too. Itâs probably the only thing that saves Joelâs career and Davidâs life.Â
David winks and drives away as the boss begins to reprimand Joel who is still shaking and fuming.
All he knows is this: If anyone touches his babygirl he will not hesitate to put them six feet under, no matter the cost to himself. He will not hesitate to get blood on his calloused hands. He will not hesitate to kill. And this time? His baby will not sustain a single scratch . He will not wait for her to get hurt before he acts.Â
***
Joel wants nothing more than to go home and spend time with his babygirl and wife and even his step-son if he will allow, but there is blood popping and oozing and broiling and churning under his skin like billowing, bubbling lava. If he doesnât do something about it soon he will explode worse than a volcanic eruption so he heads to the seediest bar he can think of. He makes his way inside and sits right up at the bar, already occupied by a few people. He orders a drink (his usual: whiskey on the rocks) and waits for the impending opportunity for violence he is sure is lying in wait.
He cannot believe the shit that came out of âPastor-fucking-Davidâsâ sick, perverted mouth and that he almost lost his job over it. He lets that thought charge him up into a rage, his fists clenched so tightly they are beginning to ache in the joints. He cannot believe that disgusting little fucker had the audacity to say that horrible scummy bullshit in his presence when he would do anything to protect that innocent child. He takes a drink of his whiskey and knocks it back in one gulp. He would do anything , âLordâ only knows. He snickers to himself sinisterly.Â
And while heâs on the topic, fuck God! When had He ever done a single damn good thing for Joel his entire miserable life except maybe to give him Sarah and then take her away like she was nothing and not the entire light of the universe wrapped into a small, vulnerable person? Joel doesnât know much about the bible, truth be told, but he remembers a few things from his Sunday school days. He remembers that people are created in the image of God and the stories he remembers most are from the Old Testament which heavily featured a God of absolute rage. Maybe that is the way he is god-like, built of anger and revenge and wrath and the sick, pathetic hunger for power that lurks inside most people.Â
But he also remembers Jesus being meek and mild. Joel never understood that desire until he had Sarah and then Y/N in his care. If Joel could snap his fingers and make himself some fundamentally kind and caring man he would, but he canât. Joel Miller is not a good man. He tried to be for Y/N, he truly did, but look at everything heâs done in the time heâs known her: he used Erica to get financial stability and roof over his head, heâs cheated on her numerous times, he beat Aiden, a child, and everyday the weight of that guilt grows greater as he begins to truly understand how wrong that was, and he beat his babygirlâs pathetic excuse for a father (but still her father) in front of her. He also beat people in bar fights and that time at the gym. And the thing is: is he even a little bit sorry about any of it â except for maybe what he did to Aiden? No, not even a little. And heâd do all of it again if it could mean getting to spend time with his babygirl, Y/N, again. His babygirl who FUCKING DAVID tried to threaten!
And the problem is: who knows what that fucker is capable of? The police and the judicial system let him out after one year which can only be described as a colossal moral failure and a massive miscarriage of justice. It wouldnât take much for David to really figure out where they lived and grab Y/N and throw her in his trunk like he did that poor other little girl. Maybe thatâs paranoid, but Joel knows better than most that when a man wants to do a dark thing he will find a way to do it. Joel does not want to live his life constantly looking over his shoulder as some horrendous pedophile lives freely.Â
And then he turns his head to look down at the rest of the fairly busy bar and he sees him . None other than David himself, drinking a beer. Joel cannot believe his luck. It is like all of the light in heaven has aligned to give him such a gift. A part of him is screaming to not engage because Joel is sure he could kill him for what he said about Y/N. But the rest of him is already standing up and grabbing David by the shoulder andâ
âIf you know whatâs good for you, youâll get the fuck out of here now ,â he snarls. âAlmost lost my job because of you, you sick fuck. Youâre lucky I give you a warning and donât wring your neck on the fucking spot.â Â
David turns around, Joelâs fingers digging into his shoulder.
âProverbs 24:1 and 2,â he quotes calmly. ââDo not envy wicked men or desire their company; for their hearts devise violence, and their lips declare trouble.ââ
âWhat the fuck is that supposed to mean?â
âIt means perhaps I will be leaving. I donât care to spend my time with wicked men such as yourself. And I have many preparations to make for what is to come. How is your daughter doing since we last met?â
Joelâs heart runs cold.Â
âGet my babyâs name out of your goddamned mouth .âÂ
âHope we run into each other soon,â David grins as he gets off the barstool and dislodges himself from Joelâs grip. âThere is a lot I could teach her.â
He turns to leave. Disgusting coward, Joel thinks. He could let the man go. But then what? Live in fear of him? Let his precious Y/N live in fear of him? Joel is tired of living in fear, of resigning to a cruel man in a cruel world, and he will never do that or let Y/N do that ever again.Â
And then David leans in so close that Joel can smell the alcohol on his breath and the sweat on his skin.
âCanât stop thinking about her pretty little hands around myââ
Joel doesnât let him finish. In that moment he knows what will transpire. He picked this seedy-ass bar for a reason: so that no one will bother to stop him.
He lands the first punch with ease, doesnât even feel the pain till minutes later. The force of the blow to Davidâs head is so strong he slams down into the ground. It is so violent that Davidâs eyelid starts to bleed and the skin around the impact spot becomes puffy and dark.Â
David shouts for help, but no one in this place gives a fuck and even if they did everybody knows who he is and what he did so they donât give a shit two times over.Â
Joel continues the assault. Punch after punch reigns down on the other man as blood begins to coat his features. David tries to get a punch or two into Joelâs stomach, but Joel straddles each of his biceps and holds him down so he can continue hitting. The longer Joel hits, the better he feels. This time is different. This time he does not see the features of every man heâs ever hated in the face of his victim. This time he sees only Davidâs disgusting smirk in his mindâs eye. This time he only thinks about how he is saving Y/N from a lifetime of fear and cruelty. This time Joel will not let his adversary get a strike in first. This time he will be the one to stop the fate of impending devastation that lies in the palms of Davidâs shaking and broken hands. This time he can save her .Â
When Joel is done with his hands, he is panting heavily. He moves on to his feet, kicking the manâs gut sadistically, his trembling hands, his face. Crunch , goes Davidâs skull. And then he is not moving or breathing.
Joel stops.
A lick of fear trails against the inside of his stomach, but the rage, always the rage warms his stomach like a rush of flames.
So he keeps going. He bends back down and squeezes the manâs throat just to make sure. Itâs good he did too because Davidâs bloodshot, viens-having-burst eyes snap open and David makes a pathetic little squealing noise and Joel squeezes harder, rougher, with more conviction.
In the end, it takes longer than he thought it would.Â
Joel only stops when he hears sirens blaring in the distance. He looks up for the first time since the assault started and sees all of the patrons staring at him in revulsion and fear. The bartender actually has the phone in her hand. Joel guesses she was the one to finally call the cops. He guesses he was so sadistic and violent that even this shitty place had seen enough. He thinks to run, briefly, but where would he run to? Everything he has ever wanted in life is now going to be closed off to him. But he saved Y/N and that makes everything worth it. It has to have been worth it.
Joel puts two scarred, calloused fingers to Davidâs pulse point, as blood (his and Davidâs) drips down from his knuckle onto the wooden floor and feels nothing.
When the cops handcuff him and take him away, he doesnât resist. He comes quietly. He cannot ever really be a good man for Y/N, he understands that now, but at least now she and he may know some peace of mind after what heâs done.
***
The time leading up to the trial is a blur.Â
Erica pays for an excellent lawyer, but divorces him on the spot. It seems there are some things even she will not forgive, and apparently murder is one of them. She allows the children to see him one last time in cold, sterile police interrogation room. A court-appointed child advocate social worker must be present. They allow him to have his handcuffs taken off for the first time since he was arrested. The kids are told he accidentally killed someone in a bar fight and for legal reasons he leans into the âaccidentalâ part.Â
Aiden comes in first. He knew who David was and tells Joel he did the right thing. Joel is surprised. He reaches out a limp hand, dirt caked under his fingernails, and shakes Joelâs for the first time since theyâve known each other and they part ways on good terms.
âYouâre not my dad,â Aiden tells him quietly. âBut you always put up a good fight to be there.â
And he leaves.
Joel is more touched than he wants to believe.
Y/Nâs visit is much more difficult.
âHow could you!?â she screams, standing by the door the second she sees him as he sits at the interrogation table, his chair turned toward her.Â
At first Joel thinks she means how could he killl another human being. Y/N didnât seem to know who David was after all. But thatâs not what she is mad about.
âHow could you leave me!?â she shouts, tears in her eyes. âYouâre going to be taken away from me! Mom is leaving you because of this and that means you arenât like my dad anymore. Youâre going to forget all about me and never get to see me again because you killed some dumb man who tried to give me a bible?â
âHe was not a good man,â is all Joel can say.Â
He canât be the one to tell her more, hasnât told anyone how David had threatened her. Not even his lawyer. He doesnât want to scare her, doesnât want to admit to anyone he let those words even get to leave that shit stainâs mouth.Â
âI donât care!â she shouts again. âI want you!â
And then she bursts into tears and runs into his chest and Joel holds her against his orange jumpsuit and starts to feel tears trickling down his own cheeks.
âNever gonna forget about you,â he nearly scolds her into hair. âHow could you ever think that, baby? Youâre my babygirl. Iâll get out one day and come right back to you, understand?â
âBut Momââ
âYouâll be grown by the time I get out and wonât have to worry about what she says. But Iâll tell you this: you might feel different about me by the time your grown up and however you feel I want you to know Iâll respect that. But I ainât gonna forget about you. Not ever.âÂ
âYour time is up,â the court-appointed social worker states.Â
âNo!â Y/N shouts, burying herself deeper into Joelâs embrace. âNO! Iâm not leaving! I wonât leave you!â
Joel hugs her back tightly, crying into the top of her head as she sobs softly into his chest.Â
In the end, the social worker has to pull her away as she screams.
âI love you, Y/N!â he calls to her as the social worker drags her from him. âNever gonna forget you, babygirl. Remember that.â
All Joel can hear back is a broken wail.
***
Erica attends the trial; the kids are forbidden. Joelâs defense claims it was a drunken accident and goes for manslaughter. Because he killed a known child molester he has no trouble while he waits in jail. He is even considered a hero by some. No one tries to fuck with him and thatâs how Joel would prefer it since if he gets into too many fights it will just add to his sentence and he must get out and get back to his babygirl if sheâll still have him. His lawyer tells him not to mention the threats that David made toward Y/N because it will look like more of a reason that Joel would have had to intentionally kill him as opposed to accidentally like the manslaughter plea would have the court believe. Joel listens. He does exactly what heâs told because this lawyer is good and he needs to get out someday for christ sake.
In the end, he gets ten years and his lawyer tells him he could get eight for good behavior.
Eight years, if Joel can manage it.
They take him away to prison in handcuffs. Erica sobs. It is the last time he sees her.
***
Joel always wondered if his temper would land him in prison. Now that heâs here things go surpringly well. He gets a reputation for being the murderer of a child molestor and people respect him, listen to him when he bothers to speak. He keeps things in order and people start to refer to him as the âpod boss.â He also reads a lot in his cell, tries to help people with their cases and appeals if he can. And if someone steps out of line, Joel is more than happy to put them in their place so long as he can avoid attention from the guards, who he actually mostly gets along with to their faces, but behind their backs beats people to a pulp. No one ever dares to snitch on him and he is considered on the right track to get out for good behavior early.Â
Time passes â painfully long stretches of time.
He has a lot of time to think, to read. He reads every book in the prison library over the time he is incarcerated. He reads parenting books, self-help books, books on trauma, books on abuse, books on anger management, books on meditation, books on spirituality (nothing sticks in that regard though, he is still furious like God, but less so these days). Somehow his anger has started to simmer down a notch.  Â
But he worries his babygirl will forget about him, or worse grow to hate him. Heâs not sure heâll survive that.   Â
Luckily, or he might have withered away and died, somehow Y/N convinces Erica to let her write him a letter once a month and have one call with him on Christmas.Â
Christmases quickly become his favorite day of the year.Â
Y/N writes him religiously. She talks about how angry she is at him, how she misses him, how she finally fixed the motor on Joelâs old pickup truck, how some boy gave her a love letter on Valentineâs Day, how she thinks of him every day.
Joel never tells her what David said about her, lets her believe he is just some violent, drunken idiot. He writes back how much he misses her, how he read a new book this week, how prison food is shit, how heâd probably greet that boy with a shotgun if he thinks heâs getting anywhere with his babygirl, how his whole heart beats for her.
Sheâs allowed to send him one photo a year, her most current school photo, and Joel hangs them on the wall of his cell so he can see her beaming at him at his highest and lowest moments along with the tiny picture of Sarah he managed to save from his wallet.Â
Aiden even sends him a card each Fatherâs Day. It never has anything written in it except for whatever stupid pun or text the card came with, but Joel reads between the lines with that one. Each one seems to whisper to him louder and louder, I love you and I forgive you. Joel writes him back, âThanks, kiddo. -Joelâ He hope that conveys the thousands of sorrys he wants to scream from the rooftops and say straight to the boyâs face. He will someday when he gets out. He makes himself promise. He hears from Y/N when Aiden joins the marines.Â
When Joel gets to actually hear Y/Nâs voice on the old prison phone itâs like the most beautiful sound he has ever heard except for maybe Sarahâs voice. She babbles away about her life and whatâs sheâs up to and he hangs on every word like gospel. He barely gets a word in, but prefers it that way. Wishes he could hear her singing. Once, when sheâs sixteen, and sounds so woefully grown up it hurts Joelâs entire heart, she hums a little absentmindedly and he canât get the sweet sound out of his head. Her love for him never seems to waver and that is a blessing that Joel will never forget, the only thing he would thank this cruel God for. And of course, his love for her never wavers either. She is the only beacon of light for him in this dark and mundane existence. She is his everything.
***
When Y/N is eighteen and no longer under her motherâs control, she comes to visit him in person. This is the first time they have seen each other in six years. Despite their loving correspondence, Joel is nervous to see her for the first time since her childhood. He worries about how awkward it might be.
When he sees her walking into the dinky little family meeting room, his entire mode of existence changes.
She looks so beautiful, so grown-up. Sure she had always been a cute little kid, Joel always thought that, but now she is a woman. Tears come to Joelâs eyes. When her eyes connect with his, he feels so seen .
He tries to get a word out, but before he can she is running to him, into his arms and Joel has never felt something so perfect in his entire life. He knows he has never felt a love like this before. Not even with SarahâŠsomething about this is different somehow? Joel is not too in touch with his feelings, but heâs trying to be more attentive to them these days with nothing left to do but read about such topics as âemotional regulationâ and âmindfulness.â Heâll come back to this thought later thoughâŠ
Y/N begins to babble into his ear, something about missing him and not wanting it to be awkward, but this is the furthest from awkward Joel has ever felt.
Joel has never been a man of many words so all he can think to say is,
âMissed you, babygirl.â
She grins at that, brighter than all the suns of all the planets in the universe (Joel has been reading about those too) and he laughs for the first time in what feels like a lifetime.
She laughs too, wipes tears from her eyes, and says,
âMissed you too, Joel. More than you know.â
Joel thinks that canât possibly be true for that is all he has known for the last six years and possibly his entire life: missing her.
She comes once a month, drives an hour just to see him, and she tells him about college and later her very own shitty apartment. Her mother has thrown herself into her work and Aiden is serving his second tour. She makes good grades and has a stable boyfriend that treats her well, she swears. Joel couldnât be happier for her, except the boyfriend business does make him want to crush that little fuckerâs head in for some reason.
***
The last time Y/N comes to visit before his release (eight years to the day for good behavior) (she is 20 damn years old already!) something feels different to Joel. When he hugs her to greet her, heâs suddenly very aware of her body, the curves of it, her softness. Her hair smells so good, he doesnât want to let go of her and then to his intense dismay and shock he feels himself getting a little excited down south. Immediately, he lets go of her, feeling like a pervert, praying she didnât and doesnât notice. He doesnât see any obvious signs from her and the two sit down (Joel rather quickly) at the flimsy, nailed-down table and they talk of Joelâs impending release. All the while, Joel is trying to stay calm. He convinces himself it was just an accident and that he hadnât been around any women in what felt like an eternity and thatâs what led him to get worked up. But when Y/N leaves to go home he feels a kind of dull longing in the bottom of his gut. A different kind of longing then what he had felt for a younger Y/N. Joel tells himself not to repress for the first goddamn time in his life and let himself feel. And he does. He feels butterflies and yearning and need, a great big need inside himself. And then he knows what else he feels: the gut-wrenching, unquenchable sensation of love and beneath that, primal, base, and self-loathing: desire .Â
In his solo cell (that he has acquired because he is the pod boss and respected) he jerks off to those thoughts, touches himself to those feelings. When he cums unusually hard, he feels an overwhelming amount of shame. Of this, Joel knows, he will never ever tell another soul. Joel also knows he will not hurt his babygirl any more than he already has, intentionally or not, not ever. But then again, being a good, upstanding man has never really quite been in his arsenal, has it?

A.U.gust 2024
It's almost August again, so time for us to explore alternative universes and see all the other ways in which our boys could fall in love. đ
For this year, each week will have a general theme, and anything that falls under that theme is allowed, as long as it's original. WIPs, updates or re-imaginings of your own previous works are also allowed (to use someone else's work as inspiration, please ask for their consent before starting).
As always, no sign-ups are needed for this event. Just make sure to mention me using @gallavichthings on the body of your post (you can hide it under a read-more or by using a reblog if you wish to). Posting here on Tumblr is mandatory, but you can host your work somewhere else and post only a link if you want to. There will, of course, be a collection on AO3 (to be announced later).
Some posting suggestions (nothing is mandatory, but it would be courteous):
Tags are to your own discretion, but I suggest tagging NSFW works or hiding them under read-mores (in case of visual posts - fics are normally not an issue).
If you post a long fic on Tumblr in its entirety, it's best to use a read-more in order not to make your post too long and take up a lot of space on people's dashboards and on the tags.
For posting multiple unrelated works on AO3, posting separate works and making them part of one series is better than making each work a chapter of one single fic. That way, you can tag it appropriately and people can more easily find the fic they actually want to read. (That doesn't apply, of course, if your fics are actually connected.)
And without further ado, the themes for each week (please note that a few examples were provided for each week, but they're just a small fraction of what can be done):
Week 1 (01/08-07/08): Seasons/ Holidays (Christmas AUs, summer vacations AUs, New Year's AUs, Halloweeen AUs...)
Week 2 (08/08-14/08): Past/Future (Pirate AUs, Cyberpunk AUs, 1950s AUs, Star Trek AUs...)
Week 3 (15/08-21/08): School/Work (High School AUs, College AUs, Office AUs, Coffee Shop AUs, Tattoo Shop AUs...)
Week 4 (22/08-28/08): Supernatural (Vampire AUs, A/B/O, Soulmate AUs, Superhero AUs...)
Week 5 (29/08-31/08): Free - since this is only half a week, these last three days will be for anything that does not fit any of the other weeks.
If you aren't able to finish your work in time to post it in the designated week, please wait to post it in the last three days. If your AU falls under more than one category, you may post in any week you prefer, according to what you judge to be the most relevant to your work.
I hope that is clear enough, but if not, send me a message and I'll be happy to explain anything further.
And if anyone is in search of some AU ideas, this post contains several AU prompts.
See you in a few weeks!

HOMECOMING
PAIRING: Jackson! Joel Miller x afab! reader || WC: 1.8k
SYNOPSIS: After a long day of patrol, Joel comes home later than he said he would be back. You are just happy to welcome him back into your arms.
CONTENT/WARNINGS: FLUFF. Suggestive content - 18+. Established relationship. Soft & affectionate Joel Miller. Ambiguous age gap (Joel is in his late 50s, reader is 25+). Mentions of early pregnancy. Cute stuff. Banter and teasing. No use of y/n.
A/N: Hey there, been a while. In case y'all forgot, yes I do still write LMAO. This is a little something that I wrote miraculously on my free time, and it is my first Joel Miller piece. I'm also slowly getting back into writing so pls be nice! I did originally write this with the new Pedro Pascal picture as Joel in mind, but I'm a gamer Joel type of girl at heart so that's what I went with. Hopefully, it is enjoyable for those who choose to read it. Any likes, comments, and reblogs are greatly appreciated! Dividers by @saradika-graphics.
⣠TLOU was created by a zionist and is based off of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Please refer to this link to learn how you can help the Palestinian people.

Night fell over Jackson, soothing and quiet as it usually was. Youâd think after some time, youâd get used to the stillness that often consoled others in a world full of unsettling clicks and gunfire, but you found yourself troubled with the calmness that followed once the sun went down. The change of the seasons propelled a temperature shift outside; bitter winter exchanged for the rebirth of spring, which hopefully meant the sun would stay in the sky just a little bit longer.
Your face nuzzled into the pillow beneath you, the material not yours to claim, but it wasnât unfamiliar. Digging your nose further into the bedding, you subconsciously chased the faint scent of pinewood and gunpowder, one of the few things that eased your anxiety. It was a smell you got used to recognizing over the past few years, not that youâve been keeping count.
Despite the warmth the sheets provided you as you rested on the left side of the bed, your body felt cold, missing a familiar set of strong arms and a welcoming chest pressing up against you. He had told you before he left for patrol that heâd be back before sundown, that was the plan anyway. But you knew better than anyone that stepping outside the protective gates of Jackson always left room for the unpredictable.
In the haze of your dreams, you faintly heard the click of the front door opening and closing, the floorboards of the stairs creaking with the ghost of muted footsteps. You stirred in bed, ears trained to pinpoint the noise, yet too stubborn to wake up entirely. A breeze entered the bedroom before you sensed something else sharing the space.
Thatâs when you felt the phantom touch of plush lips skimming along your hairline. If you werenât awake then, you certainly were now.
âJoel?â A call of his name equivalent to a whimper at the sudden contact you craved. You caught the slight intake of breath and the exhale that followed.
âItâs me darlinâ. Didnât mean to wake you,â Joel spoke quietly, the peaceful baritone of his voice awakening you fully. As you sighed, you met his tired gaze with your own, bruised knuckles raising to brush your cheekbone affectionately.
âThings went okay on the patrol?â You questioned him, pleased that he was here with you in one piece rather than focusing on the fact that he came later than youâd like.
âYeah, had to check something out with Tommy to be sure before coming back. Iâm sorry honey, didn't want to make you stay up for me.â
Even if it was unintended, Joel felt guilty whenever he didnât stick to his word. He was not much of a virtuous man, lived a large part of the past two-plus decades giving less of a shit about honesty and ethics. But when it came to you, it killed him when he couldnât follow through on his promises, even if things werenât within his control. The last thing Joel wanted was to upset you or make you worry, but no matter how many times he reassured you of his return, you still tried your hardest to wait for him to come back home, back to you.
âItâs okay, Iâm just happy youâre here,â you blinked slowly as his voice filtered through the lagged mess of your head. Leaning your face towards his hand, you kissed the inside of his palm. âGo freshen up and come to bed; Iâm cold.â
âYes, maâam,â he chuckled with a smile at your forgiveness, parting from you for a second and heading to the bathroom, not planning to make you wait any longer.
You watched his silhouette from where you lay on the bed, fluttering your eyes closed at the sound of running water. When the door opened again, Joelâs broad figure returned wearing a worn-down flannel and some fleece pants he had snagged long ago.
âScoot,â he jutted his chin to gesture to the right side of the mattress, your side, suggesting to reclaim his on the left. Shifting to the right, you let him slip into the bed feet first, hauling the sheets to cover the both of you. A bulky arm wrapped around your waist and tugged you close to him, your body molding to his like a missing puzzle piece.
âNot too far now,â Joel grinned as you nestled right into his warm chest, seeking his attention and attempting to siphon more of his warmth. It takes you off guard how your nerves instantly settled once you had Joel near you again. In his arms, that was where you belongedâprotected, loved, safe.
âI missed you,â you mumbled, eyes shutting to breathe in his typical musk. One of his hands cradled your lower back, thumb running circles into your skin.
âI missed you too, darlinâ. Too damn much.â Joel kissed your forehead, drawing lines up and down your back with his fingertips.
His hand moved again from behind you to the front of your body, palming your stomach protectively. A smile crept up on his face as he felt your tummy under the material of the flannel you stole from him, the only thing you preferred for pajamas. The gentle curve of your belly was not yet prominent enough to be overly detectable, but he knew what you carried. Precious cargo. Thatâs what he called it after you both adjusted to the shock of adding to Jacksonâs current population count.
âStill feelinâ sick?â Joel asked you in the roomâs darkness, his eyes shifting to watch over your facial features. The moonlight illuminated the edge of your jaw and the roundness of your cheeks, and his chest ached at the thought of witnessing other growing changes over the next couple of months.
âSometimes. It bothers me, but nothing I canât handle.â You reassured him the best way you knew how, having to rely on Mariaâs advice for all things related to childcare and Ellie being your new overly protective guard and nurse when Joel wasnât around.
If someone had told you that youâd find yourself alive after the apocalypse in a safe community and pregnant at that, youâd consider them crazy. Yet here you were, carrying a manâs child when you least expected it, a man years older than you with memories of a reality you couldnât experience or remember. But you didnât mind; the end of the world didnât leave much room for strict morals anyway.
Make the most of it. You donât know when youâll miss something once itâs gone.
Joel had told you that after the first few patrols you had with him once you adjusted to Jackson, growing comfortable with the stoic and quiet man who grabbed your attention everywhere he went. He shared stories of a time before the world fell apart, discussing things like watching the sunset, listening to music from artists youâve never heard of, and sweet treats he missed tasting. Things changed after the seventh patrol together, where you saw him smile for the first time after successfully hunting some game for the town.
That night, one thing led to another. It started after some drinks, a hungry and messy kiss on your doorstep that led to clothes on the bedroom floor, and hands pawing at one another. You woke up the next morning with an arm wrapped around your waist and his nose rubbing the back of your neck.
Simply put, you havenât left since.
âOh, I know. Can handle a whole lot, strong woman you are.â Joel taunted you a bit, his memory fleeting momentarily and recalling the spitfire you always were with him in particular. He could never seem to tame your spunk and attitude, but he grew to love it like the rest of you.
âMhmm, real strong, if you ask me.â You held his gaze with a gleam of mischief, bringing your body closer to his wide chest and tilting your chin upwards, silently asking for more than a cuddle.
âYou tryinâ to tell me something I donât already know?â
âI donât know. Am I?â You were a tease, always have been, jerking Joelâs chain more than he cared to admit.Â
âThose hormones are messing with your head, darlinâ. Got you acting feisty,â he smirked, shifting nearer to your face.
Curious hands reached up to curl through his thick, graying curls. The contrasting streaks along his temple became more noticeable as time passed, matching the graying beard youâve come to love and adore. He hesitated to let his hair grow out initially, thinking heâd look too much like his younger brother. Much convincing later, paired with hiding the shears, you got the desired result, and now you were lucky enough to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
The kiss was velvety as it was intimate, your tongue lining his bottom lip before he groaned, granting you entrance into his mouth. You swallowed the rumble he released, drawing a path of your touch from his neck down to his lower abdomen. Antsy fingers itched to skim the waistband of the fleece that concealed him, reaching close to the hardness you felt before he seized your hand away.
âAht aht, no. As much as I want you there, itâs bedtime.â Joel didnât necessarily want you to stop. Hell, if it were up to him, heâd let you go to town on him however you wanted. But his energy levels were dwindling, and all he wanted to do after a long day was get some proper rest with you in his arms.
âBut-â
âSweetheart, if you let this old man sleep, Iâll wake you up to a real nice surprise in the morninâ.â It was an effortless proposition, easy to keep you at bay until the next day and enough to curb your insatiable appetite.
âPromise?â You beat your lashes at him, knowing the last thing Joel would do was deliberately not provide for your needs, even if that meant having to keep up with you physically.
âPinkie swear.â Joel gave you another peck before letting you get comfy against his chest once more, cuddling into him as much as your growing belly would allow without being squished. You started to drift off as sleep called to you, listening to the gentle rhythm of soft beating in your ear.
âBreakfast too, Miller.â You murmured to him, peeping how he laughed in the dark with his eyes closed. The pleasant and lively sound made you smile and your heart pound.Â
âOh, Iâll feed you. Donât worry your pretty little head about that.â
The peace in your bedroom matched the serenity that fell over Jackson. Now that you had Joel wrapped around you, you didnât mind how quiet it was. So long as you have him, you can handle anything that comes your way.

Yall I canât stop thinking bout Fontaine. Like quiet but nasty ass freak deek Fontaine. Whoâs obsessed with his lil shy (secretly equally nasty) gf and her glasses.
Fontaine has a need to cum on her glasses literally anytime she gives him head.
It plays in his head every time she finds herself on her knees for him. But heâs too scared itâll be too much for reader. Till one day (completely incidental) it happens
Corruption kink go brrrrrr. My mind ainât took it no further than that quite yet but the fundamentals are set up đ
Anyway â„ïž freak deek Fontaine đ©

âWhat you doin,â baby?â Fontaine asked when he freshened up after being outside all day and night. He came home roughly twenty minutes ago, smelling like outside. He gave you a quick kiss and made a beeline to the shower because he knew that you liked him most when he smelled clean and fresh.
Silly man. Youâd suck his dick even if he was filthy and outside all day. Youâd bend over if he walked in the house, covered in God knew what, and told you to assume the position. You just werenât always good at expressing that.
You looked up from the couch to see him standing in the doorway, leaning against his arm. He wore a black tank and black basketball shorts, tattoos on full display and his mouth gleaming with those gold grills you love so much. You sighed as you stared, taking in his physique and his stance.Â
âJust watching a movie,â you said, fixing your glasses to get a better look at him. It was either smudges in the way or your body was starting to overheat looking at that hunk of man. It still blew your mind. You got to kiss and claim that man any time you wanted.
âWhat you watchinâ? You hungry?â He asked. He straightened up and rubbed his stomach. Heâd been hitting the gym a lot more lately, needing to bulk up to deal with his enemies out in the streets. Your one rule with him was that he always came home. No matter what he had to do.Â
âIâm okay,â you said. You couldnât take your eyes off of him. You had been sitting here, enjoying your day off doing absolutely fuckinâ nothing, and was perfectly fine. The minute Fontaine walked in, youâd had an entire ache in your lower belly.
âWhenâs the last time you ate?â He asked.
You hummed to yourself and then looked at the clock beneath the TV. You paused the movie, since you werenât watching, and hummed some more.
âThatâs too long. Iâma make us some sandwiches,â he said.Â
You called after him but he was already heading down the hall to the kitchen. You heard the cabinets and drawers banging around as he went to work. What was it with men and sandwiches? You giggled and shook your head, trying to lay back down and still be comfortable with your glasses on.Â
Maybe you ought to switch to contacts. Just once, youâd like to be able to lay on your side and still see the TV. You hummed and thought it over. Naw, Fontaine seemed completely against the idea of contacts. He liked your glasses and you happened to like them too. But still.Â
A few minutes later, Fontaine came into the room carrying two plates with sandwiches and cups of milk. Well, yours could be classified as a sandwich. His was some kind of tower. He had multiple layers of peanut butter sticking out from between his bread slices. You shook your head at him as he placed the cups down on the wooden coffee table.
âThank you, baby. I will never know where you put all that,â you said. You sat up on the couch and the blue and pink plaid throw blanket slid to your lap. You put your cold feet on the ground. Even after being under the covers all day, your feet were still icy.Â
Fontaine leaned down and kissed your forehead, making you tingle all over. Then, he sat on the couch beside you and handed you your plate. Extra peanut butter, just as you liked it. You took a big bite and moaned at the taste. Itâd been too long since you had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.Â
âRight down the hatch, my love. What you watchinâ?â He asked.
You told him you were watching Damsel on Netflix, told him who was in it, and a brief synopsis. âBut what you feel like watching?â You asked.Â
âNaw, put that on,â he said. He chewed and you watched the way his jaw flexed. Your boyfriend was so serious all the time. Oftentimes quiet. That was initially what drew you to him in the first place. So few men were quiet.Â
âAre you sure?â You asked. Your man was more into Black cinema or action movies. Something like this, starring the little white girl from Stranger Things, was not on his list of must sees.Â
âIâm sure. Câmon. I just wanna snuggle with my girl,â he said. He glanced at you and his eyes softened.Â
You grinned, cheeks hurting with the effort. You bumped your shoulder to his and then kissed his massive shoulder. You took a tiny hint of his scent. Crisp mountain air. You also got to admire his body up close.
The absolutely disgusting, filthy, animalistic things you wanted to do to this man. He had no clue. Sadly, because you started stuttering and mumbling whenever you began thinking of all of your dirty fantasies. Let alone try to tell him about it so he could do those things to you.
âYou know I always wanna snuggle with you. But we can turn it off whenever you want,â you said.
He took a huge bite out of his sandwich, already halfway done and youâd only taken a few bites. He licked his lips, licking away peanut butter that you desperately wanted to do for him.Â
âNaw, how far you get?â He asked. He licked his thumb and used his clean fingers to toggle the remote and show the remaining time. You were only fifteen minutes into it. You kept pausing to listen to the shower, to see how long he was going to take.Â
âYou mind running it back?â He asked.
You shook your head and then lapsed into comfortable silence with your man. You started the movie over and scooted back on the couch. Â
Fontaine finished his in about three bites, sitting back with a satisfied sigh. He spread his arms around the arm and back of the couch, man spreading and bumping your knee with his. You finished your sandwich a lot slower, enjoying the feel of him next to you.Â
Everywhere he touched, just lit up another dirty fantasy in your mind. Taking him in your mouth, taking him from behind. Or him tying you up and having his way with you. The possibilities were endless.Â
You had to finish sometime, so you polished off the last bite and chased it with the rest of the milk. You smacked your lips and stretched. Fontaine grabbed your shoulders and you squeaked.
âFontaine!â You said and tapped his arm. He chuckled and grabbed you anyway, pulling you to lay against him.Â
âMy bad, baby,â he said, sounding anything but sorry.
You pushed your glasses back up your nose and kissed his chin. He grinned and kissed your temple. You settled back against him, getting lost into the movie. Angela Bassett always looked damn good. Just radiant and glowing all the time. You admired seeing a Black woman in a fantasy gown, when Fontaine shifted.
Wordlessly, you followed his lead, standing up so that he could stretch out on the couch. He pulled you by the hand to lay next to him and you giggled softly. Once you were in front of him, you pulled the throw blanket over both of your legs.Â
He shook out his right foot with a groan and then both you nudged and pushed until you were both comfortable. You focused back on the movie, loving how pretty it was.Â
Throughout the movie, Fontaine was more into it than you were. He was asking you questions. He knew you didnât like to spoil but you got a thrill whenever he was genuinely into your little movie.Â
You sighed and adjusted yourself on the couch, pushing your ass into his dick. A low groan escaped him and he put his hand on your hip to keep you from moving. But you felt that bulge on your ass. You adjusted again, intentionally rubbing your ass. He groaned again, putting more strength behind his grip and stilling your movements.
âAlright, now,â he said.
You giggled and adjusted your glasses, adjusting yourself one more time. He started to growl and you giggled again. âOkay, okay, Iâll stop,â you said.Â
Fontaine hummed and slipped his hand under your pajama shirt. This was something new he started a few months ago, randomly slipping his hand underneath and grabbing your titty like a stress ball or something. He tried to pull it away then but you told him to keep it there, testing the waters.Â
Fontaine only kissed behind your ear and had been slipping his hand underneath ever since. Mostly it wasnât sexual, he just liked warming his hand underneath your titties. But other timesâŠ.like nowâŠFontaineâs fingers found your nipples and he began to play with them. Rolling them between his fingers. Pinching.
You bit your lip, biting back the lewd moan that wanted to escape your throat. Your pussy throbbed. Pulsating at each tug of his fingers. You adjusted against his crotch, rubbing your ass against him.
He moaned but otherwise made no other sound acknowledging what you were doing. He continued to tug and rub, making you clench your thighs and rub them together. He moved his lips to your ear, letting you hear his breathing. His quiet moans. That tiny whimper.Â
The movie swam in your vision. You were having trouble relaxing with Fontaineâs hands on you. His large arms around you. The heaviness of him. Your essence leaked out of you thinking of him on top.Â
You continued to dry hump on him. Way more than what was necessary. You whimpered yourself, rubbing your ass against his growing hardness. Fontaine rolled your earlobe into his mouth, teasing it with his teeth and tongue.Â
You whimpered more. Fontaine moved his fingers from your nipples, down your smooth stomach, and then slipped beneath your shorts and underwear. His fingers teased through your pussy lips, growling when he found you wet.Â
The second his finger touched your clit, you finally moaned and pushed back into his dick. âAw, my poor needy, baby,â he cooed in your ear.Â
ââTaine,â you moaned.Â
âWatch the movie,â he said.
âI canât,â you said.
âWatch the movie,â he said again, slowing his fingers. He dragged them lazily through your wet folds and you shivered in his touch.
You focused on the TV, focused on the middle of the movie where things were starting to look up for the main character. But Fontaineâs fingers were starting to pick up again, gathering up all your wet slick, making it echo in the tiny living room.Â
Smacking noises grew louder as Fontaine played with your pussy. Your orgasm was always just out of reach. Every time you got close, when you started whimpering, grabbing hold of his wrist, heâd pull his fingers back and play with a different area.
Over and over, he got you close to the peak and then withdrew right before your orgasm took over. You were a whimpering mess, no longer caring about the damn movie. ââTaine, please,â you moaned.
Fontaine stuck his thumb in your mouth, his massive arm coming around your neck and squeezing. You sucked and whimpered around his thumb, wrapping your lips and sucking hard like you wanted to do to his dick.Â
Fontaine moved his fingers faster, harder, flicking against your clit with all your slickness. You were so wet. So loud. You whimpered and cried, opening your mouth further to moan and move your hips.Â
âLook at that ass go,â Fontaine said in your ear. âYou ainât as innocent as you claim, huh?â He asked.
You nodded. You were innocent. But this mind of yours? Oh, it was always on demon time. You passed time thinking of sex with your man. Thinking of him bending you over in inappropriate places and threatening anybody that looked. You daydreamed of him pulling your hair while giving lethal backshots.Â
He plunged his fingers into your pussy, pushing two deep. You cried out, but willingly accepted his fingers. âOh, god,â you moaned while your orgasm rushed through you like a rapid river. You were a leaf, pulled along the current.
You whined and moaned, a crying, loud sound. You trapped his hand between your legs. Your body was out of your control, shaking and twitching. Fuck, you couldnât even breathe.Â
You sucked in air as you finally came down and your pussy stopped spasming. Your thighs relaxed and Fontaine slipped his fingers out with a deep hum. He made sure all five of his fingers grazed your sensitive clit on his way out. You twitched and moaned.
Fontaineâs chuckle was low and deep as he licked his fingers. âGet on them knees for me, baby,â he said.
You nodded. Not an ounce of strength in your body but you managed to slide off of the couch. Fontaine sat up and opened his legs on either side of you. You scooted in between, rubbing his thighs and biting your lips.Â
âFuck, you look sexy like this,â he said. He pulled his underwear off and slid them down his thighs. You didnât want to wait that long. You leaned down and took his dick in your hands, wrapping it around his base.
He groaned and looked at you. âDo what you did yesterday,â he said and licked his lips.Â
Your pussy clenched and you scooted closer. You got low to his tip and watched him as you kissed his tip. He bit his lip and moaned, jutting his hips out.Â
You took him into your mouth and sucked on him like a lollipop. You slobbered and slurped it up, rolling your tongue around his tip. âFuuuck,â he groaned.Â
He kept moving his hands. Either they were clenched, or he was cracking his knuckles, or he crossed his arms. You watched his face, fighting to keep his eyes open. But also fighting something else? Was he okay?
You took his dick out and used your hands to get his shaft wet. âAre you okay?â You asked.
Fontaine nodded. âThat mouth of yours,â he panted.Â
You giggled. âYou can put your hands on me, you know,â you said quietly, not quite looking at his face anymore.
âAre you sure?â He asked.Â
You nodded, looking towards what you were doing to his dick. He stilled your hands. âAye, look at me and use your words,â he demanded.
You looked at him. Looked at how serious he was. âYes, Iâm sure,â you said.Â
Fontaine grinned. Now, isnât that better?â
âYou donât have to be gentle with me all the time,â you said.Â
Fontaine tilted his head. He moved his hand to caress your cheek. âOkay, but only if you tell me when I do something you donât like,â he said.Â
You nodded and grinned at him. âThen put that dick back in your mouth,â he said, tilting his head down and narrowing his eyes.
You squeaked and went back to work, slapping your lips with his dick. He groaned and moved his hips again. You spat on his dick and then sucked it back down, bobbing your head. You were done with teasing. You put your hands on his thighs for structure and then set a good pace.
Fontaineâs hands gripped your jaw and pulled you down faster, pushing his dick deeper. You slobbered on him, feeling it drip down your chin and hit your shirt. Pre-cum leaked into your mouth and you hummed at the salty taste of him.Â
âFuck, thatâs it. Fuck, thatâs good. Suck that shit,â he moaned.Â
Your eyes were locked to each other as he used your mouth. As he pumped your head up and down on his long, thick dick. You moaned as he forgot to be gentle, slipped past some barrier in his mind, as he shoved your mouth down.
Your pussy throbbed painfully. Aching with emptiness as your mouth got to enjoy his dick. Your jaw hurt a little but you kept going, kept matching his energy. He hit the back of your throat and you almost gagged. He pulled your head back but his dick jumped at the sounds you were making. You spit on his dick, licked your lips, and then suckled him back down. You let him go with a wet pop and then started pumping him with your hand while you sucked one ball into your mouth.Â
âIâm finna bust,â he groaned. You kept going, kept stroking him down so that when he was close, you could suck it down like usual. But he was already trying to slow you down.Â
Fontaine moaned and came all over your face. Most of it got on your glasses and you shrieked in surprise. It was warm, splashing your face in random spots. On your forehead, probably in your hair, and on your chin.Â
Fontaineâs moan was cut short as he panted. âShit, Iâm sorry!âÂ
You blinked at him, staring at him through the cum sliding down the frames. The closest drop was right at the corner of your mouth. The cum turned cold fast, but it wasnât unpleasant. You stuck your tongue out and licked his cum from your face.
You moaned, trying to lick up more. Fontaine groaned and you turned back to him. You took off your glasses and threw it on the couch. You smiled sweetly at him as you cleaned up the cum on the tip of his dick.
âClean it up real good,â he demanded, leaning back into the couch.
You nodded. âYes, baby,â you said. You sucked him down and he groaned, his hands going back to your head and pushing you down on his dick.
âJust wait âtill itâs my turn, baby,â he said with a dark chuckle.Â
The end.

Prologue
Gareth is in charge of the Corroded Coffin official TikTok account, he's playing Fuck Marry Kill with the three random celebrities filters and trying to make the other guys join as well.
When it's Eddie's turn, he's having none of it until he sees the three celebrities on top of his head.
He has no clue who these people are, but the one in the middle? Eddie is sure he's going to marry him someday.
Eddie has yet to find out that the guy is none other than baseball player Steve Harrington, 1/3 of the "Ladykiller Trio", currently playing for the Yomiuri Giants. In Japan.
And when things get too complicated for Eddie's liking, thankfully he has Gareth on his side.

Any and all gender/sexuality headcanons are allowed! And no ship-bashing, please.
There are 2 prompts for each day. You can choose one or both of them to inspire your work. The last day includes a Free Day, so go crazy! If none of the prompts speak to you, feel free to create your own Tamlin content on any day. The prompts are meant to promote creativity, not restrict it. If you have questions about any of the prompts, you can message us.
NSFW/Mature content is allowed, as long as you tag everything appropriately and follow the rules of each platform. So on tumblr, that means following their guidelines for NSFW images. On AO3, that means giving your fic the appropriate rating and tags.
Any kind of creative content is encouraged! Fanfiction, fanart, edits, playlists, headcanons, moodboards, ANYTHING!
That being said, AI art is not permitted, and will not be reblogged.
Works must be created specifically for this event; previously published works will not be reblogged. New chapter updates of previously existing fics are allowed, as long as they are posted for the first time during this Tamlin Week event.

How do I participate in Tamlin Week?
Create your content and post it on tumblr. If you post on AO3, make sure to share the link on tumblr. Also make sure to add it to the Tamlin Week AO3 collection, which will be posted about later. Tag this blog in the main body of your post (@tamlinweek). In the tags, tag "tamlinweek2025"
If we donât reblog your post within 24 hours, feel free to send us a message with the link! Iâm sure we all know how unreliable the tumblr tagging system is, we would never intentionally not reblog someoneâs post.
If Iâm not a creator, how can I support Tamlin Week?
The best way to support content creators leading up to and during Tamlin Week is to let them know you support them! Reblog and comment on their work, send Tamlin content into this blog for us to post, etc. Weâll be reblogging Tamlin content from now up until the week itself. Supporting that work now will encourage creators for the event week itself.
Who is in charge of Tamlin Week?
This blog and the event are being run by @goforth-ladymidnight and @praetorqueenreyna, as well as a new moderator @highlordofkrypton.
I have a question that isnât here!
Feel free to send us asks, weâd love to hear from you all! They can be questions, headcanons, ideas, or anything else! If you have a question youâd like us to answer privately, be sure to let us know in the ask. Otherwise, all other asks will be published on our blog.
