A Jude & Dain AU where Dain, who had never been murdered and is also unable to be crowned High King, is jealous of Jude and Cardan's chemistry because he lusts for Jude.

Fic requested by @imagaintionlover1234, I wrote this whilst severely sleep deprived and looking after my poorly bun. I hope I managed to write up your request to your liking!! Also, this is only my second ever fic, so if anyone has constructive criticism I would highly appreciate it!

Dain Greenbriar had once admired the mortal girl's will to find her place amongst the fae. Unlike her peculiar twin, her mirror, her double, she did not want to marry to be accepted. No, she wanted to fight. Dain had given her an opportunity as a spy in his Court of Shadows, an opportunity to put her ability to lie to use. She was good at it, until she threw it in his face.

Jude. Jude Duarte, no, Greenbriar. Jude Greenbriar. She had gotten herself further in life than she had planned. Not only had she married his youngest brother Cardan, the prince who was weak, cruel, foolish and drunken, but she had also become High Queen. Dain still felt the humiliation of the Blood Crown rejecting him as High King, still felt the confusion of how it could be the weakest of Eldred's six children whom the land accepted as ruler. Cardan, who was prophecised to be the destruction of the crown and the ruination of the throne. Cardan, who stole Jude from him. How could he have possibly been the most suitable ruler? How could the Blood Crown have rejected Dain and his 4 other capable siblings, leaving a temporary burn where it had been placed on each brow, and yet choose the least capable child of Eldred? It should have been Dain.

He secretly watched as Cardan gently pressed Jude against a wall and kissed her. She deepened the kiss, until Cardan pulled away slightly to press kisses on her neck just below her rounded ear. The expression on Jude's face was one that Dain had imagined he would be the cause of. He had imagined many lustful things about Jude; his body pressed against hers, the fullness of her breasts in his hands, the way his name would sound as a whimper coming from her lips. And yet it was Cardan who gets to experience it all.

The rejected heir felt the spark of jealousy deep within. He could not understand what Jude saw in Cardan. He had done nothing but bully and torment her during their time at school, and yet when Cardan offered for her to marry him and become High Queen rather than just a servant, she accepted. It didn’t make any sense. Dain knew Cardan had some form of romantic interest in Jude, but he thought Jude had hated Cardan and would have done anything to be rid of him in her life. Unless it had all been a lie from her. Still, Dain had been the one to have given her an opportunity that clearly led her to great things. He had even been the one to have given her a form of protection against being glamoured by placing the geas on her. And despite not being a spy for him anymore, the geas was still in affect to help keep her safe. What more could she possibly want from him?

He wanted Jude. He still wants her, despite her being married to his brother. He isn't the only one who wants her either, he knows that. There were plenty of fae who wished to have her, to have a taste of such a sweet mortal body. The fact that she is married and the High Queen cannot stop lustful thoughts. Dain often wondered if he could do what he did with Liriope - he had got her into his bed despite her being his father's consort. The matter of her pregnancy and death induced by poison was a small thing; he would just make sure he didn't make the same mistake with Jude. After all, if something were to happen to Cardan then there would still be a chance for Dain to be accepted as ruler by the Blood Crown.

Nursing a bottle of his favourite wine, he started to formulate a plan on how to get Jude to be his lover. He wanted a share in those soft, unguarded smiles, her captivating lies, her breathy moans. And then it clicked. 'If something were to happen to Cardan'... He would just have Cardan killed to quell the jealousy within him, to take Jude as his own. Of course, he could not commit the murder himself, it would just lead to the Blood Crown rejecting him again, but he could get one of his spies to commit the murder for him. It wouldn't be the first time. And if that wouldn’t be enough to make Jude his, he could just use his power over the geas he placed on her to command her to be his. His lips curved into a malicious smile.

"Sweet, sweet Jude, you will be mine…”

Shadow seems like the type of person to have discussed safety and methods prior along with whether or not if it’s even possible. He’s not going to take that risk, especially at your expense.

During the season, sometimes Shadow magically forgets. Absolutely fixated on you. Remembering causes him to get frustrated. The hell are you on pills for? You should be wanting a child just as mush as he does!

“Hmph. Do what you want. I won’t let something minor such as a pill get in my way. ”

Oh boy, if it moves on to sulking. The rush of emotions Shadow gets are definitely being internalized until it’s time to get down and dirty 100%. Like a balloon bursting as it slowly gets filled up with air. Those are rough sessions. Your poor legs won’t be working for a while.

Outside of rutting season, he rationally knows you’re on birth control pills. It still doesn’t lessen the embarrassment after Shadow’s hormones have calmed. His cheeks are going to match his gay highlights.

If the first time was spontaneous and he found out later down the line after multiple attempts, Shadow would absolutely be upset and annoyed. A pouty hedgehog is in your hands.

Grabbing you by the hips, Shadow leans in close. His breath tickling your lips, “You’re telling me all this effort attempting to put a baby in you was a waste of time?” A yelp is forced out of you when his hand slid down to firmly grab your ass. “Or perhaps, I need to try harder?”

Shadow struggling even more to keep his distance away from you, now knowing you’re on birth control. The pill is 99% effective and he is desperately trying to convince himself that 1% chance of it failing. Even then, that’s only if you’re taking them perfectly. Typical use is 91% effective. Odds are stacked against him, but Shadow is the ultimate life form goddamnit!

A breakdown of Arthur’s breakdown.

Part 26 is stuck in my head, so I am going to talk about it.

Arthur’s breakdown of course starts off with the reveal that Larson sacrificed his daughter for power and money.

However, what really reinforces Arthur’s self-loathing are Yellow’s words;

Yellow has no qualms in throwing cruel accusations at Arthur. His intentions were clear and simple: to hurt him in the most devastating ways and where it hurts the most. However, Yellow does all that in a voice that Arthur recognises as John’s.

Ultimately, Arthur is forced to hear the voice of his only friend confirming all his worst fears and convictions. That’s what gets to him: his best friend seeing him as Arthur truly sees himself (irredeemable, rotten, a poor excuse of a human who should have died a long time ago. Someone who is trapping John, and who is forcing John to stay and put up with him).

Arthur is ao distraught that he is almost catatonic as he is carried to the mines. He is unresponsive to Yellow's insults, he has no strength to bite back to Larson's taunts. He just lets himself be dragged by Uncle.

When John finally, miraculously comes back, Arthur is quick to latch onto him. His attempts at interacting with John are however awkward and clumsy. I think that this inability to reconnect with John is because he still cannot distinguish John’s words from Yellow.

After all, if Yellow is John without his memories and without their shared experiences… doesn’t that just mean that deep down Yellow’s opinions reflect John’s in some way? Does John really think of Arthur as a self-centred person, a selfish man, a careless and cruel monster who hides behind fake acts of kindness?

To put these doubts to rest, Arthur decides to project onto John his issues. If he can prove that John is not like Yellow, he can prove to himself that he is not like Larson.

He therefore wastes no time in praising how John has improved… by cruelly comparing him to Yellow and demonising everything about Yellow… which is not right. The things he shows reluctance over were still part of who John was, those were still parts that John had to build upon to become who he is currently.

Ultimately, Arthur is involuntarily preventing John from further forming his own identity by explicitly telling him what he should and shouldn’t do, what he should and shouldn’t be. He is suddenly removing the safety and freedom that he granted John this far to figure his own identity out and is instead setting up arbitrary expectations and rules.

He is just doing to John what he did to Yellow.

These strong attempts in differentiating John and Yellow held a lot more weight, when we consider that he was projecting his own problems onto his friend. That's why he is so explosive and irritated whenever John doesn't agree with him.

He was just trying to grapple for any excuse, any proof that there is something concrete that he can use to define what makes a person good or bad. Because otherwise, there really is no difference between himself and Larson and he cannot bear to see himself in that light. He can’t accept that despite everything he did and tried to improve, deep down he’s still a cruel, heartless monster who killed his own child and went on to live.

When John didn’t give him what he wanted (instead going as far as agreeing with Yellow at one point), Arthur grew more and more anxious and restless. So, the only thing that he had left was to carve out and purge the rotten parts of himself. In any way he could.

Only then will he be a good person. Only then will the scales even. Only then he will stop seeing himself as a murderer and a poor excuse of a human.

He resolves that the only option for him is to kill the parts of himself that he doesn’t want. He decides to kill himself Uncle and make Larson pay.

Clearly these suicidal tendencies have been accompanying with him for a long time, as shown in his emotional reactions when his parents died, when Bella died and when Faroe died. His regret is also shown when he confesses he felt extreme guilt in enjoying the life he managed to build back for himself in Arkham as he was working as a PI with Parker.

Arthur just truly cannot forgive himself and his self-loathing runs so deep it’s almost a part of himself he cannot leave behind.

I like how the doubt Arthur feelings of inaptitude, guilt and self-loathing still linger even after being comforted by John at the end of Season 3:

He is unable to truly move on from his mistakes, he still feels the need to find a piece of irrefutable evidence proving he is a good person and that he can be forgiven. He needs his worries and anxieties to be put to rest.

John's forgiveness isn't enough to move on. Daniel's forgiveness was just enough to convince him he might be a good person who is truly trying to do good.

However, in Part 36, we can see that Arthur has not abandoned his self-loathing, as he still sees no wrong in wanting to kill himself killing Uncle. After Oscar reveals what happened at the orphanage he grew up in, Arthur and John have this exchange:

Arthur is tragically forever stuck waiting for Faroe's forgiveness, which he can never really obtain. She’s dead and there is nothing he can do to get her back…

I'm sorry, I just really need to get this thought out, but what one of the reasons why I am so affected by Ivan's death is the underlying emotions behind it. It's been constantly shown throughout the narrative that Ivan was infatuated with Till, but the nature of their relationship was that Till had never noticed him.

I believe that Ivan was fully aware of Till's feelings for Mizi (mainly due to the comet scene in Round 3, where Till rejects the chance of freedom) and thus, he resigned himself to gaining the barest hints of Till's attention, even if it was negative, because he knew that he couldn't have anything more. He was content with what he could get and still chose to look after Till in the ways that he believed truly matter to him (freeing him from his bonds whenever he got the chance to).

Considering their background, it's likely that none of them were exposed to the concept of love and are now just relying on their own interpretation. Thus, it was probably hard for them to ever consider letting go of the ones they love because their own emotions were probably one of the few things that they could claim for themselves since they didn't have any anatomy over their own lives. Ivan was constantly reacting after Till's own actions (such as fighting back after Till punched him when they were younger or repeating the cheer up mantra), so when he noticed that Till was no longer singing he decided to take action that would keep Till from dying. He chose to sacrifice himself so that he wouldn't be confronted with Till's death.

Because, in the end, Ivan was always content with not receiving Till's afections as long as he could be around him in some other way. He crazed to have Till gaze upon him, but he could survive on his presence alone. If Till had died before him, Ivan would've lost a major part of himself. The aliens would've taken away the final thing that he had for himself. He would've died either way. Whether physically or spiritually. At least through his sacrifice, he was able to go out without having to witness the final downfall of the one he cares about the most.
