Jimie! Do you like to draw? Here's a piece of paper and a pencil. Draw a self portrait to the best of your ability.
Ooh! Haven't drawn in a while, but I can try!
Hmm... I'm out of practice, I think. Oh well!
#ooc:#there were a few ways i thought i could answer that would be funny#i considered just posting a selfie (jimie is a very literal self insert so it's pretty 1:1 in terms of appearance)#i also considered just posting my normal portrait of him#since that is a drawing by me of him#i was going to draw it on paper for real but there was a ladybug on my desk and i didn't want it to fly at me#instead i just used a pencil brush and didn't let myself use the mirror tool or select and move anything#farmboy-jimie-stardew#undescribed image#WOULD ALSO LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT WHEN I DO DIGITAL ART I DRAW WITH MY THUMB#THIS IS THUMB ON PHONE SCREEN ART THERE IS NOT A STYLUS INVOLVED#which is why things end up looking kind of wonky in terms of placement in relation to other things#(looking at you left eye)#sorry this is just me justifying why it's not (in my opinion) fantastic to look at lmao

I did it! I finally made a cosy list of art prompts for October. This is my version of Inktober! And I call it:
COSYTOBER! đ
For years I didn't make my own because I figured, I'm just a really small artist and basically have no reach, so who is going to join in, you know? And that really hasn't changed much. However, I really want to do this at least once in my life. And I feel if there was ever a time to do it, this is it. In between hospital visits and struggling with real life stuff, I need some cosy art.
Here are the cosy prompts for October:
Pumpkin
Leaf
Broom
Bunny
Fox
Frog
Soup
Mushroom
Book
Moon
Rainbow
Witch
Cat
Hedgehog
Ladybug
Brew
Ghost
Picnic
Owl
Rain
Forest
Cosy
Hat
Wand
Spooky
Pie
Magic
Bee
Sparkles
Cauldron
Halloween
All human-made art is welcome. Traditional and digital. Whether you like sketching, drawing, or painting, everyone can join in! Maybe you prefer cross stitching, sewing, modelling clay, or paper crafts. As long as it's creative and created by you! Everyone is free to participate.
Please tag me (I'm RosieSoCosy on all the socials) and use hashtag #cosytober2024 so I can find your work!
Don't worry about having to do all of them. I know the pressure prompt lists can give, and I want this to be fun and cosy. If you can't do them all, that's fine. So do whatever works for you. â¤
I will be sharing my own progress on my blog, here, and other socials. I will check out and share my favourite entries. I might stream some of this over on Twitch. If you plan on streaming/recording the prompts, let me know, and I'll try my best to watch!
Happy Cosy Spooky Season! đđ

Am I jumping to far if I call Marinette a psychopath? I mean she uses people as she please for her own benefit, she seems to has no remorse, no conscience, egocentric, impulsive and well, she could be charming I suppose, especially to Cat Noir. Idk what else to call the combi of those trait if not psychopathyđ¤ˇââď¸
---
I donât think we should be pathologizing selfish behavior. Marinette is selfish and spoiled, and she is being written with the awareness that sheâs a wish-fulfillment protagonist. Marinette is a bad example of one, but itâs not exactly comparable with an actual neuropsychological condition, for all the writers tried to use: âsheâs traumatized!â as an excuse for some of her actions. This writing direction affects the rest of the cast too, and not just Marinette. The sympathetic characters validate Marinette's behavior almost constantly and any actual criticism Marinette faces in universe is nothing more than friendly ribbing with no expectation to act better attached.
Iâd say Marinette is Kirito For Girls, but, like, even Kirito isnât as selfish as her. Marinette has more in common with the current ilk of the wish-fulfillment isekai protagonists, like Naofumi from The Rising of the Shield Hero, or any other isekai series with similar trappings. The thing about this kind of protagonist is that their actions are basically justified by the protagonist being in another world, where they obviously need to do whatever it takes to survive. Usually these worlds will be made hostile in some way, the nominal hero humiliated and brought low by those in power before he can rise in power and get revenge on them all and win all the girlsâ eternal devotion.
Weâre meant to cheer for whatever nonsense these characters get up to, because theyâre the only real/good humans in these fantasy settings, with everyone else being an NPC in a video game, or every other character in any position of power is the most over the top, ridiculous example of human garbage. The thing is that, as paper thin as these justifications end up being, theyâre still something that gives the audience an excuse to root for the hero and enjoy the power fantasy. Even when the protagonist isnât too sympathetic, the people around them are so much worse that the hero comes across as the better person.
But hereâs the reason why Marinette canât even manage the bare bones of rootability that modern isekai protagonists have; Marinette lacks their justifications. Marinette lives in the real world, she is the most popular girl in school, she has loving parents and caring friends and sheâs the âgreatest Ladybug everâ and all her âbulliesâ are ineffectual losers who never really bring her down outside of the almost never shown backstory. Marinette doesnât get treated badly to justify her rise to power to stop herself from being hurt again (for all âDerisionâ tries to prove otherwise), her world isnât filled with awful or stupid people who canât be trusted with power so Marinette has to take all the power for her own. Weâre supposed to root for Marinette just because sheâs the protagonist or we're supposed to not root for other characters, not because they've done anything wrong, but because they are not Marinette.
Basically, Marinette is the way she is because the writers view only her as a proper character instead of merely a prop and they write the series with this approach in mind. Marinette exists in a world where everyone else is a puppet dancing to her benefit, either to praise her or to make her look good when she defeats them. With this core concept in mind, of course she isn't going to feel empathy towards what basically amounts to toys. However, this creates the conundrum of: ensemble cast shows tend to have audiences with different favorite characters, Miraculous itself got a lot of praise for the five hero team we saw at the end of season two, yet post-retool Miraculous is telling us we should only care about Marinette, meaning theyâve trashed one of the draws for this show. The attitude of the writers seems to be the exact thing I brought up when discussing how even some of the toy lines are now ignoring that the rest of the cast even exists: âIf you like any hero other than Marinette, fuck you, you stupid kids!â
The Marinette problem is so all-encompassing that it affects other characters and even merchandise, so it's very hard to explain with any in-universe explanation.

Platonic Lovesquare Headcanons because I hate them romantically but adore them as besties:
Promised to marry each other if they weren't married to someone by 30.
Use "patrol" as an excuse to just take time for themselves and have fun being kids.
Ladybug indulges Chat Noir's desires, from bringing food because he didn't eat to helping him explore hobbies he's interested in.
Adrien likes to doodle but doesn't do it often since Gabriel threw out his old sketchbook (if it's not realism, studies of the masters (like Van Goh, da Vinci, Renoir, etc.) or fashion, Gabriel considers it a waste of paper, the only reason he keeps Adrien's childhood drawing of him and his parents is because Emily loved it, if not for that he would have thrown it out already), upon learning this Marinette gets him a new one and promises to hold onto it for him at her house.
Marinette lets Adrien try on her more feminine/girly outfits, she likes how happy he looks when he's spinning in a very swishy dress.
Chat Noir and Marinette watch movies together purely to say shit about them. They got kicked out of the movie theater one too many times.
Ever since finding out their secret IDs, Ladybug will sometimes go to Adrien's house and either sneak him out or stay to keep him company.
They cry over animal videos. Their friends have found them teary eyed while they watch a guinea pig eat lettuce on Adrien's tablet during lunch.
If you're up late, chances are you either see and/or hear them running around and trying things out (by trying things out, I mean they want to see how far Chat's cat instincts go)
They argue about who has it worse with the animal instincts: Adrien, who got hit with them right a-fucking-way or Marinette, whos got hit with them super fucking slowly.
They also wonder if they'll go through physical changes (Adrien:...do you think I'll grow a tail? Marinette:...maybe?...would it be black to match Chat Noir or...? Adrien:....I think it'll be blond like my hair? And change to black when I transform??...would you get more arms? Marinette:...fuck, maybe? It'd be handy-wait... Adrien: *smiling mischievously* What was that? Marinette: NOTHING!!)
Both are dead tired. Real fucking tired. Oh hey, Ninalya, good morn-zzzzzz...
No, we aren't dating, why do people keep asking us that?? *Adrien is sitting in Marinette's lap while she works on some new designs*
#miraculous#platonic lovesquare#platonic adrienette#platonic ladynoir#platonic marichat#platonic ladrien#they're besties your honor#and i won't accept anything else#.....#unless it's polyamory#don't ask why#i don't know why

On a Scale of 0-100, youâre an Angel four times over: ch 4
Training with the Amazons was far more intense than any of the basic martial art classes her mother had once enrolled her into. The differences between the two were laid out in plain sight as her body became every bit the weapon she was learning to wield under the Amazonianâs teaching.
Sadly, Adrien couldnât join the training as often as she wished. He did join whenever there was a break between his civilian and alter egoâs lives, but that wasnât very often, between photo shoots and their alternating patrol schedule. They have been using online communication to stay in contact through enchanted communicators that acted the same as any regular phone. The only real difference was its ability to appear and disappear at will.
The guardian, while Adrien is away, learns a great many things during her time on Themyscira. She learns not only from the Amazons but also from a former miraculous holder who had once been a part of the order. With Hippolyta able to teach the guardian about the old order, as well as lending the bluenette what few grimoires the amazons had in their possession, the current wielder of the ladybug miraculous learned much more than she ever had under the previous guardian.
Still, some things couldn't be taught to the young guardian. Some things had to be learned from trial by fire, and what a great fire it was.
The world was lit a flame as ash rained down through the air. An army of creatures, no, magically corrupted humans, Akumas, stood amongst it all. Death and destruction spread much farther than the eye could see. The black cat falls and soon so does the ladybug. The universal balance weighs too far one way as a figure, a man, dressed in purple, glowing a bright white while floating above it all. A single poster falls before her feet, having been carried by the wind. The only thing she could make out on the poster before it too burst into flames was a date printed on the paper.
The guardian gasped awake, heart pounding as blood rushed through her body. A sharp ringing pierced her ears, as her eyes burned from the overflow of tears.
"-... you're okay! It's okay- everything is okay. Shhh⌠you're safe here." Tikki cooed, rubbing a gentle paw up and down her wielderâs cheek in a calming motion.
The other kwamis were flitting about nervously as their guardian attempted to calm herself, despite the pearly silver tears that continued to fall in place of clear watery liquid. She pushed herself up off of her bed in a clumsy hurry, running out of her current living quarters towards the pull of creationâs faint magic residue. The path she followed led her to one of the meeting halls the amazons had just off the shore of Themyscira, which allowed their male allies to come to meet with them without breaking the laws placed upon the island.
It was a short trip when you use portals as your method of travel. She arrived at the hall's large doors in mere moments, pushing them open with a simple wave of her hand. Strong winds move the heavy stone with ease, drawing the attention of all those present in the hall.
âI need to speak with Hippolyta.â The Guardian states, her sharp sapphire eyes cutting across the room, landing on the amazonian queen.
âOf course.â The Queen agreed before any of the people present could object. She walks over to the guardian, gesturing for them to step out of the meeting hall.
They only just get out of sight from any peering eyes when the guardian explains her reasoning behind urgently needing to speak with the amazonian queen.
âIâm pretty sure the way things are going doesnât change, then the world is going to be destroyed on September first when the only two active miraculi on the side of good fall into the hands of the corrupt butterfly.â
âAll right. How do we prevent this tragedy from coming to pass, little miracle?â Hippolyta inquires while gently wiping away the guardianâs tears.
â...You arenât going to ask how I know this?â The bluenette asks in place of an answer, causing the amazonian woman to chuckle.
âChild, you are not only the last guardian but have also wielded and been blessed by the majority of the kwamis. There are simply some things that the gods in play have deemed worth your knowledge.â Hippolyta explained. âIt is how you will use this knowledge that is the real question.â
The bluenette nodded her head in understanding, thinking over every detail she had seen. Her eyes widened as the answer revealed itself.
âThere had only been two miraculi in play. What if I add more?â The guardian suggested, biting nervously at the dead skin of her lower lip.
âDo you have people you trust to aid you in battle?â Hippolyta questioned, reserving a somber shake of the guardianâs head. âThen how would you add more mircauli if you have no one to wield them?â
The bluenette was quiet for a few moments. Her hands fisted into the many layers of silk her nightgown was made of, causing her knuckles to turn a shade of white not unlike the cloth.
âBe gentle with yourself child.â The amazonian queen scolds gently, taking the young guardianâs hands into her own.
âI donât know what Iâm supposed to do.â The bluenette whispers into the air as a new round of tears began to fall. The sound, carried by the wind, makes it just far enough for the older woman to hear.
Hippolyta kneels at the young guardianâs level, with her hands still held in the amazonianâs own.
âThere is only so much one can do on their own, and you, little miracle, have been tasked with so much more than any person ever should be tasked with,â Hippolyta informs the bluenette with a sad smile.
âIf itâs strength, of both the body and the mind, that you desire, we can teach that here on Themyscira, but if you wish to learn more about the magic that is seeping into your very being, Iâm afraid you will have to learn that else were.â The woman explains, looking back over at the meeting hallâs entrance.
"My daughter, Diana, has befriended a fair number of magicians over the years." The amazonian queen begins hesitantly. "I had called them here to ask for assistance in how to teach you, but perhaps what you need isn't more second-hand knowledge, but for someone to help you shape your magic."

A Blind Meeting
Chapter 14
04/27/2022
Note: This is outrageous I am sorry for the long wait.
đŚđđŚđđŚđđŚđ
I wanted to know what was going on as soon as possible, but Richard doesn't get out of school until three thirty. I walked back and forth in my office at home, as the video of the attempted robbery played in the background. I couldn't believe Marinette flipped a man over her shoulder.
Marinette is truly someone special. I sat down at my desk and close out the video. If I didn't know any better I'd assume she was that Ladybug hero. I want to apologize to her for real this time. But how can I? Maybe I'll buy her flowers. Yeah I'll do that with a card that says, "I'm sorry."
"Maybe you should put more than an 'I'm sorry.' Master Bruce." Alfred walks into the office carrying a tray of food. "Flowers are a good start to a woman of good taste. Which flowers were you thinking?" He placed a plate down on my desk with a glass of wine.
"She liked the flowers in our garden. Specifically the roses in the center. She said they had a different scent than most roses. What's for lunch?" I asked moving some papers around.
"Your lunch Master Bruce. Smoked Salmon with seasons potatoes and carrots, and a glass of red wine. That's a good choice. Why don't you just take them from the garden."
"Thank you Alfred, I just might." I picked up the fork and knife and eat.
"Master Bruce, if I can advise. Marinette is not your average 'Desirable' woman." Alfred says disappearing around the doorway. I thought over what Alfred said as I eat.
Alfred and I made it to the academy to pick up Richard. I held onto the bouquet of flowers when I watch Richard walk up to the car. I quickly placed the flowers down beside me on the seat.
"Alfred, you can't believe what happened at school today. My French teacher-" Richard stared at me only blinking three times registering that I was in the vehicle too.
"What happened in class?" I asked resting my hands on my left knee. He rubs the back of his neck thinking of what to say. His eyes looked around the car landing just beside my leg.
"Bruce, are those flowers? Those wouldn't be for a certain beautiful blind lady would they?" Richard wiggles his eye brows at me with the biggest grin he could possess.
"As a matter of fact, they are." I feel a smile cross my lips and quickly cover it with my hand and cough just a little. Richard continued to grin untill when we arrived at the Sleeping Bug-Mice. There was a line about a block long when we arrived. I look down at my watch seeing that it was only three o'clock. It didn't seem like Marinette would have time right now to even say a quick "hello." I decided to have Alfred take us to the company to check on the business.
Richard finished up his home work in my office. I looked up to notice Alfred looking at his watch and pushed it back under the sleeve.
"Is something the matter Alfred?" I asked drawing Richard's attention.
"No sir. Just thinking about what I am preparing for dinner tonight." Dinner? I look down at my own watch and noticed it was thirty minutes to seven. I sat there thinking for a good moment then locked my computer down.
"Marinette's store was really busy today. She probably didn't have anything to eat yet." I started.
"Let's bring her dinner?!" Richard excitedly finished. I smiled getting out of my chair and walked over to him. Alfred had a smirk on his face, clearly amused.
"I agree. What should we pick up?" Richard stood up and we walked to the elevator as we decided on where to go.
We settled with the famous Italian place, ordered all of our favorites, then some Tortellini, salad, and their famous bread sticks. Alfred pulled up to the bakery, finding it had only Marinette, a couple customers, and her two new employees. Richard and I exit the car holding the to go bags of food waiting for Alfred to join us. Be held out the bouquet of flowers to me. I had to maneuver the bag around in my arms then take the flowers.
"I will be at the Manor for some me time, young masters. Call me when you need me." He quickly just got into the car and drove off not waiting for a response from us. I blinked in the direction he drove off in, wondering what just happened. Richard walked in first with his half of take out.
"Pas de souci. Nous sommes arrivÊs vers deux heures trente mais votre employÊ a dit que vous preniez un repos bien nÊcessaire, alors nous avons dÊcidÊ de revenir plus près de la fermeture. J'espère que ça va?" Richard smiled as he spoke. I walked in with the other half of the food and quietly placed it on an empty table. I listened carefully to their conversation. A young man peered his head around the corner of the kitchen. He looked oddly familiar but I couldn't quite put my hand on who.
"It isn't a problem at all. Wait, We? Is Monsieur Pennyworth with you?" Marinette asked, looking around Richard to as if to see if Alfred is indeed here.
"No, he is at home taking some "him time" so he put it. How are you Marinette?" I said, coming across sincere and hurt for a minute. Its as if she didn't want to see me anymore. Or it could have just been that Alfred had always dropped the boy off.
"Y-you're fine. I mean I'm f-fine! Ouch." She said in a hurry. "Go ahead and have a seat in the empty table, I'll bring over your drinks and pastries before we get started then?" She mumbles. She seemed to have hurt herself some how. Her words had slurred here and there. Richard chuckled before he took a seat at the table with our food on it.
I watched Marinette walk into the kitchen for what seemed like a couple minutes the walk back out. She poured us two cups of coffee and heated up a couple of the muffins and cream filled croissants delivering them to our table. I waited a couple minutes watching her closely. It is remarkable how she is able to be so successful in this world just by only being blind. It is as if she is magic. She stood there with her hair tied over her left shoulder held only by a red ribbon. She didn't smile but that could be because I am here.
"Alright, so did you bring your homework?" She asked as she pulled out the seat in front of her.
"We actually brought you dinner." I began.
"Incase you were hungry. You're shop seemed very busy today. We brought Italian." Richard finished. He moved the muffins and croissants into the middle and unwrapped our take out on the small table for the three of us.
"Oh, MercĂ. But I couldn't. I still have to clean up and still have some customers in here." She said, with a small bite to her lower lip. She seemed a little nervous for some reason. Was it me?
"You go ahead and eat Miss. Evelyn and I will do the clean up. You need to eat." The same young man from before stepped out from around the kitchen with a small little girl, who stoodnthere nodding. Marinette is about to protest when her stomach gave a loud growl. With a defeated sigh and agreed and sat down with us.

Super-Rockinâ Wedding of the Century
AYO! Day 2 of MGI Trope Tussle! Team Enemies-to-Lovers for the win. I bring you another oneshot. but this time i used 3 prompts like a dumbass.
Fics Masterlist
Daminette Oneshot 4.3K words (no warnings except slight cursing)
Summary:
âMarinette is invited to the Super-Rockin' Wedding of the Century and she needs a date. Alya is both her best and worst wingman.â
Day 2 of MGI Trope Tussle, I used 3 prompts to make this thing: 1. "You don't have to like me, you just need to pretend you do." 2. "I like your costume. You look very cute." "Are you making fun of me?" 3. 'Write about a very unusual wedding proposal.' this is the culmination of all my efforts.
without further ado:
It was the biggest news on the internet. Global sensation, international rockstar, Jagged Stone, was officially engaged to childhood friend turned manager, Penny Rolling. Memes and fan theories stormed every corner of the web. Trending topics including #rockstar_wedding and #RollingStone permeated every social media platform. Guest lists were speculated, dress designers were tagged in every post that even mentioned the words âweddingâ or âbrideâ. It was total mayhem but none felt it worse than up-and-coming Parisian designer, M. D. Cheng, privately known as Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
The young adult was up to her neck in design templates, and was drowning in half-baked ideas and sketches. While the internet has only heard about the proposal for a solid two weeks at this point, Marinette was in the know for six months. Jagged Stone had contacted her in advance because he needed her help with the proposal itself.
And what a proposal it was. Â
Jagged had outlined his idea in simple terms but it was still so mind-boggling that Marinette needed him to draw some visual aids to completely convey his idea. Initially it sounded simple enough but the more the man spoke, the more Marinette felt her brain fry at the mental picture. It first involved recreating a scene from Pennyâs favourite movie. Which sounded rather romantic, if you ignored the fact that her favourite movie was Bride of Chucky. Then it involved Jagged dressed as the Tinman from Wizard of Oz. Oh, and the proposal had to happen on Halloween because that was the anniversary of their first date apparently, and based on everything else this plan entailed it might as well have been. Marinetteâs role in all of this was to simply re-make the white wedding dress Chuckyâs bride, Tiffany, wore because Penny already had the leather jacket to match. Of course she did. She didnât even want to know how Jagged acquired the Tinman suit. Not her barrel of monkeys.
While many thought Jagged was the eccentric one of the pair, due to his loud personality and being an actual rockstar, the more Marinette worked for the two of them over the years, the more she learned how absolutely wrong they all were. It turned out it was Pennyâs idea for Jagged to dye his hair purple, and she was the one to ask him out on Halloween all those faithful years ago. Her calm and collected demeanor was an impressive cover for the absolute weirdo she actually was. And Jagged had planned a proposal that was undoubtedly perfect for her. Regardless of how abso-fucking-lutely bizarre it was.
To each their own and letâs move on.
The set-up for the proposal started with Jagged, dressed as the Tinman, playing the part of Chucky, who begins the body-switching chant from the movie. Everything from that point on was resting on Pennyâs love for the movie. Without hesitating, Penny, dressed as Tiffany, and playing her part, knew the lines by heart and immediately began reenacting the scene with Jagged. Her lines involved telling âChuckyâ to kiss her while she reaches for a knife thatâs supposed to be in his pocket. Instead, as Jagged was still dressed as the Tinman, Penny pulled out a slip of paper. On said paper, the words âAll the Tinman wanted was a heartâ were written in Jaggedâs almost illegible chicken scratch. When Penny was distracted with the piece of paper, Jagged had gotten down on one knee and pulled out the engagement ring. The actual words of his proposal were never actually said because, upon seeing the ring, Penny flung herself into the man, clipping her chin into his metal-plated shoulder, but she wasnât complaining. Â
So that was how the proposal went.
Wedding planning started almost immediately since the newly engaged had already picked a theme. And this is where Marinette began to regret every life choice she has made since she was thirteen; starting with opening the mysterious box she found on her desk and ending with agreeing to being the main designer for the Rockinâ Wedding of the Century. One thing that wasnât well-known but not a secret about Jagged was that he was a superhero fan. He grew up enjoying the fictional ones in his childhood comic books and he adored the real ones he witnessed in his adult life. His song that he dedicated to the teenage Ladybug was only one part of his⌠appreciation. His hero-worship went so far as to beieve that a hero-themed wedding was appropriate. Or he didnât, but also didnât care about adhering to societal propriety and went with that theme anyways. So the Rockinâ Wedding of the Century was now the Super-Rockinâ Wedding of the Century. And twenty-three year old Marinette was incharge of the entire wedding partyâs outfits.
Perfect.
As a small mercy from some god, both the bride and groom to-be had a rather short list of people in their parties. Marinette was also able to design appropriate hero-themed outfits for all of them and scheduled them for fittings in the coming weeks. That, surprisingly, was the easy part as there were plenty of heroes to draw inspiration from. However, that wasnât the cause of her current crisis right now.
No. Marinette was up to her neck in unnecessary designs and ideas because sheâs been avoiding one particular contingency in her acceptance of the wedding invitation.
She needed a date.
She needed a date because she had promised Penny that she wasnât overworking herself and to prove it, she would bring a date to the wedding. Rather than call any of the people who expressed interest in her at some point in time, she designated herself to wallow in her situation and distract herself with designs. In the midst of her one person pity party, her phone rang under the sea of ripped out pages. She scoured for the device and hastily answered before she could accidently send the caller to voicemail.
âHello?â She didnât check the caller ID and was delighted at the sound of her best friend answering her.
âMarinette! Howâs it going over there?â Alyaâs voice was mixed in with the busy street life of Metropolis. She had moved there immediately after high school, snatching an internship with the Daily Planet and attending the local community college. She and Marinette donât call often due to time differences, but when they do itâs like theyâve never parted. She always looked forward to her calls.
âItâs going great, Als,â if she ignored her current dilemma, then yeah, everything was perfect. âBut you wouldnât happen to have an available bachelor willing to be my date to the âSuper-Rockinâ Wedding of the Centuryâ in your back pocket, would you?â Â
Alyaâs answering laugh was both comforting and teasing and Marinette felt herself missing her even more. What she said next, however, took Marinette by surprise.
âActually I do.â
âPardon?â
âWell,â she took a pause to build suspense. âI know a guy who knows a guy. But itâs nothing shady, I swear.â
âThatâs not comforting.â Oh god. What has she unintentionally signed herself up for?
âYou know my coworker, Jon? The guy who does the photography for all my field work?â Alya had met Jon as soon as she had started her internship. Both of his parents were top journalists at the Daily Planet so he volunteered to act as tour guide for all the new interns. He and Alya, from the exasperated stories Marinette has heard from Nino, got along like a house on fire. If he was involved, Marinette was starting to doubt even further that this was going to end well for her.
âYes, I know Jon. How is he by the way?â
âHeâs fine, but I remember him telling me how he tried to set up his best friend on several dates over the years and how they all ended poorly. Heâs as approachable as a brick wall; not just a prick but the whole damn cactus. Or so Jon says.â How does that sound like someone Marinette wanted to bring along with her to the wedding? âBut heâs totally your type so I could ask Jon to wrap him up in bubblewrap and send him your way whenever you want.â
âHow,â and Marinette said this with a lot of feeling, âis he my type exactly?â
âGreen eyes with daddy issues.â
âALYA!â Marinette was absolutely floored at her bluntness. She wasnât even sorry about shouting into the receiver.
âAm I wrong? You have a type and he fits that type. Jon mentioned how this guy and his dad hit several roadblocks when they first met. And Iâve seen pictures of him so âgreen eyesâ checks too.â
âThat is not my type of guy.â She canât believe this was how this conversation was going.
âAdrien.â
âI didnât even know who his father was at the time, Alya.â
âFelix.â
âHis dad is dead! That doesnât count as âdaddy issues.ââ She can feel her cheeks flaming as the call went on. Any hotter and she was going to set her sketchbooks on fire. âBesides, I dated Luka so he doesnât fit the criteria.â
âHeâs an outlier and thatâs only because his eyes are blue.â Okay, fine she had a type. âAnd besides, you donât even have to date the guy. You only need him to accompany you to the wedding and you both go your separate ways after. No harm, no foul.â
Right. That was true. No strings attached. She could do that.
âI canât believe Iâm saying this but,â she held her breath and let it out loudly, ignoring Alyaâs chuckle at her dramatics.â Give Jon my number to give this guy. And send his number to me.â
âWahoo! Look at you, girl,â Alya was hooting and hollering over the speaker and Marinette found herself going along with the theatrics. âOkay, I will. But I gotta go, my cab is here. Bye!â
âBye! Stay safe. Oh before you go, whatâs Jonâs friendâs name anyways?â
âUh, Damian, I think.â The call ended before Marinette could respond, but it was okay she mused. Tossing her phone onto her couch, she flopped down onto her floor and stared at her ceiling contemplatively.
What could go wrong?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Alya had described this Damian guy as ânot just a prick but the whole damn cactus,â she was right. Marinette had been texting back and forth with Damian for a month, and the guy was making this idea seem less and less worth it by the day. Whenever Marinette tried to learn more about the guy, he would ghost her for days on end before replying with a half-assed response at best. She knew nothing about him other than that his first name was Damian and that he was from Gotham. She had no idea how the ball of life that was Jon was even friends with someone like Damian. She asked as much to Alya in their most recent call.
âHow did they even meet?â She was pacing the floor plan of her apartment, ready to tear her hair out. âDid Damian bully him in school or something?â
âApparently their dads knew each other and introduced them,â Alya sounded half awake, stifling a yawn; probably because Marinette had called her at 1 am, Metropolisâs time. âTheir brothers being friends also forced them to get along.â
âAnd thatâs another thing!â Marinette had paused in her pacing and was now staring intently at a potted plant in the corner of her living room. Any more rage in her glare and the plant would have wilted and died. âHe doesnât tell me anything about him. I donât need to know all his personal information, but if heâs going to be flying out to Paris on my behalf, I think I at least deserve to know his last name.â
âHey, M,â another yawn echoed through the speaker, âI love you, truly, but maybe this could wait for holier day time hours?â
âI guess,â a vindictive part of Marinette felt like this was payback for all those inopportune calls when Marinette was busy with clients. âSorry for interrupting your sleep.â
âItâs no big deal. But have you tried talking to him about it? If heâs ghosting your texts, try calling him. If he ignores you then too then maybe you should try finding another person to be your plus one.â
âThe wedding is in two weeks, Alya!â Marinette partially regrets waiting so long to vent her frustration about the situation but she had tried to tough it out. âI would have much preferred if you were my plus one. You sure thereâs no way to convince your parents to skip out on the family trip?â
âSorry, M. Once the news about the proposal hit the internet, I tried everything. I even tried to use work, saying that I could cover the ceremony for the newspaper. My folks wonât budge though. My dadâs aunt is important to him and he wants us all at the funeral.â
âRight, right, I forgot about that.â Now she felt like an ass. âSend you dad my condolences when you see him again.â
âWill do. Good morning, Marinette. And donât worry too much about the guy. Everything will turn up great. I can feel it.â
âThanks, Alya. Good night, get some sleep.â
The line went dead and Marinette let out a rather weary exhale. She had no idea how this was going to work. She pulled up her contacts and searched for what she had Damian saved as.
âDoucheâ flashed on her screen and she hit the call button without remorse. She didnât care that it was also currently 1 am in Gotham. He didnât deserve that much consideration from her.
âWhat?â His voice was gravely and deep. And also really pissed if his clipped tone was anything to go by.
âDamian? Hi, this is Marinette, the girl youâre accompanying to the wedding in two weeks?â Her voice was pitched as if she was dealing with an irritating customer. Fake and polite.
âI know who you are. Why are you calling me at this unreasonable hour?â Fair, but Marinette was still aggravated at him so she wouldnât concede.
âIâm calling because we need to talk.â She heard him scoff over the line and she felt her blood boil even hotter. She took several calming breaths to reign her temper in. âDonât hang up.â
âLook,â She didnât give him a chance to refuse and kept talking, getting everything off her chest. âThis wedding is important to me and I promised the bride I would bring a date. After that you can delete my number and we never have to speak to each other ever. You donât have to like me, you just need to pretend you do.â
âWhatever,â he sounded less annoyed from when he first answered the phone. âI will act as cordial as the situation requires, and nothing more. I also have my attire secured for the wedding and accommodations in Paris already prepared. I will see you at the wedding.â
âThanââ The sound of the call ending interrupted her and her frustration was back tenfold. With a cry in anguish she flung her phone onto her couch and stomped into her kitchen to channel her rage into baking.
Three loaves of bread and a dozen eclairs later, Marinette felt calm enough to finish the final touches on her outfit for the wedding.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was the day of the Super-Rockinâ Wedding of the Century. The Rolling-Stoneâs, as they were asking to be called, had kept the ceremony small. Relatively. Only two hundred invited guests, few of which were asked to bring a plus one. Marinette was over the moon at the array of outfits people were sporting. Some chose full-on cosplay while others, like herself, went for more subtle nods to the heroes. In honour of a previous Ladybug, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, Marinette based her outfit off of Wonder Womanâs uniform, Hippolytaâs daughter. A navy blue sequined halter top bodice that flows into a blood red A-line skirt. She paired it with a thick silver belt, silver gladiator heels rather than boots and broad silver arm cuffs. It was simple but effective. Besides, all attention should be on the bride and groom today.
A tap on her shoulder caught her attention and she turned only to come face first with red with black spots. Ladybug. Someone chose her as inspiration. How flattering. Looking up to see who was wearing the Ladybug-themed suit jacket, she stared at a pair of deep forest green eyes and a sneer to ruin that ridiculously handsome face. She recognized him from the photo Alya had sent some time ago. Damian.
âHi, Damian,â at least one of them had to be civil and Marinette knew it was going to be her. But the idea that of all the heroes for him to choose from he chose her sent her into poorly stifled fits of giggling. Images of him going âLucky Charmâ and âMiraculous Ladybugâ were almost too much to bear.
âI donât know whatâs so amusing about my choice of attire,â his face was starting to flush in similar shades to his jacket and that made Marinette laugh harder. âLadybug is a well respected heroine and I thought it appropriate to pay homage while in her home city.â
âNo. No no. There is nothing wrong with it. I like your costume, you look very cute.â
âAre you making fun of me?â His irritation was rather cathartic for the still giggling woman.
âNo, I just didnât think you would have put that much thought into your outfit for today. You always gave me the impression that you were ready to back out at any time.â
âI made a commitment and I had all intentions to see it through the end.â
âCould have fooled me.â And her snark was back. Now was not the time to pick a fight with the guy, he did fly all the way to Paris on her behalf after all.
âIâve been meaning to ask,â and Marinette wanted to know how he managed to sound so condescending with that statement. âHow did you even get an invitation to this wedding anyways? Youâre not a celebrity and you donât look like family either.â
âActually,â she said it with more force than what was probably necessary but his slightly accusatory tone was just so irritating. âI am the lead designer for the wedding party,â her chest was swimming with confidence at the chance to talk about her job. âIâve worked with the bride and groom for years; M. D. Cheng, Marinette Dupain-Cheng.â
Marinette will deny to her grave the rush of satisfaction at the absolute gobsmacked look on Damianâs face. A real fish out of water. Mouth open wide ready to catch flies. She wished she could capture this moment forever.
The moment was over too soon because Damian was regaining his composure and slipping into his default stoic expression. He cleared his throat and fixed a look at Marinette. It was rather intense.
âI believe I owe you an apology then.â He looked put-out at admitting something so menial. âI believed you were nothing more than a socialite chain climber.â
âA what?â
âWhen Jon reached out to me saying that a friend of one of his coworkers needed a date for an event, and when that event turned out to be the wedding of someone of such popularity, I figured you were only trying to increase your own social status by showing up with me on your arm.â
âAnd you said âyesâ anyways?â Marinette was confused but pieces of the mystery that is Damian were starting to fit in place. But something else stuck out as odd to her. âAlso, how would you being my date increase my social status anyhow?â
He scoffs before answering. Bitch.
âWhat? It wouldnât be the first time one of Jonâs set-ups ended that way. Besides, weâve had an agreement that I canât turn down an offer until meeting the person face to face.â Weird deal but some friendships are just like, Marinette supposes. âAnd being seen with me is enough to make anyone more popular.â
â...And you are?â
âDamian⌠WayneâŚâ He spoke as if he was talking to a small child. As if it should be obvious who he was like he was some celebâ Oh shit.
A name had flashed into her mind. On the finalised guest list, Marinette had only seen it once in passing, there was a name that belonged to someone Jagged was rather excited to see. He said the friend was an old college buddy. She remembered that much. She had completely forgotten that âa billionaire playboyâ was also attached to the name. Damian was the son of Bruce Wayne. Suddenly everything in the past few months made perfect sense. The cold shoulder, the ghosting, and his prickly disposition. He was overly guarded because he had justified reasons to be. Now she felt like an ass.
âOh.â Real intelligent, Marinette.
âOh? What, you didnât know?â He sounded incredulous at the notion and he had every right to be. Marinette could only shake her head. Words were failing her now, her brain trying to rewrite the memories of every interaction the two ever had.
She was saved from further mortification by a call for everyone to find their seats. The wedding was about to begin.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ceremony was beautiful. Pennyâs dress was a silver grey, tied back with a golden belt. Instead of a long train, Marinette had attached a black cape that shimmered in the right lighting. Penny wore a tiara with two peaks to imitate the âbat-ears.â A Batman-themed wedding dress was not something she ever saw herself making, but she was proud at how beautiful and confident Penny looked in it. Jagged was adorn in a royal blue suit with bold red lapels. He also had a matching red cape. His hair was styled in the familiar sleek way Superman wears it. The two made quite the pair. Â
The reception was a lively affair. Jagged had dedicated several songs to his new wife and they dazzled the crowd on the dance floor. Marinette didnât pay much attention to the speeches beyond a quick glance at Damian when his own father stepped up to the podium. He had buried his head in his hands, looking like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. A courtesy pat on the back was all Marinette gave to him.
The two hadnât really spoken much since the revelation that they had completely misjudged each other. The awkward tension was almost palpable. As Marinette was gathering the courage to speak to him, to try and officially clear the air, she was being dragged by one of the bridesmaids onto the dancefloor. It was time for the bride to throw the bouquet. All the unmarried women were being corralled into a tight cluster and Marinette got swept up in the tide.
Marinette wasnât focusing on the actual game, trying her hardest not to get trampled, when she saw something move in her periphery. Years of being Ladybug had left her with finely honed instincts so she could not be blamed when she immediately jumped and caught the incoming object. The bouquet. She had caught the bouquet. Oh that was just her luck. Deafening squeals of delight brought her out of her own head and she was suddenly being embraced in Pennyâs arms. She returned the hug, sharing in her delight, before breaking away to sit down.
âNice catch.â His voice had surprised her, she hadnât expected him to speak to her for the rest of the night.
âUh, thank you. Just lucky, I guess.â Damian didnât get the chance to respond because he was being dragged by his own father to join all the bachelors in catching the garter. Marinette was equally uninterested in this spectacle and had let her mind wander to other things.
A loud uproar caught her attention again and her eyes zeroed in on Damian holding the tossed garter. He made his way back over to her, dropping himself into his seat gracelessly. The two sat in silence, contemplating the implications of them both catching the garter and bouquet. The games were done purely for traditionâs sake, with total disregard of what it was supposed to symbolise. Still. Oneâs mind couldnât help but wander. Minutes ticked passed and Marinette was beginning to wonder if someone was going to talk about the elephant in the room.
âSo,â Damianâs voice was slightly strained, like he wasnât used to being this flustered. It was kind of endearing. Wait what?
âSo.â
âWhile marriage seems far out of reach for right now,â Oh god. He was going to talk about it. âHow does dinner sound, next Friday?â
âWait,â he wanted to spend more time with her? After their disastrous first impressions? âReally?â
âReally. I believe we started off on the wrong foot,â he let out a soft chuckle, almost self-deprecating. âWhich isnât really new for me, but itâs not everyday I meet someone who doesnât recognise me at first glance. I think youâre someone who I would like to get to know better. If that is something you are also interested in.â
âYeah,â Marinette knows all about wanting to get acquainted with someone who sheâs had a bad first impression of. Just look at her past relationships. Wow, she really does have a type. Damning thoughts for later. âFriday works for me. Seven pm?â
âPerfect. Iâll text you the details then.â
âWonderful, I canât wait.â
The rest of the evening was spent in companionable silence with small bouts of conversation in between. They shared a couple dances on the floor and parted ways at the end of the night with budding anticipation for Friday.
As Marinette was preparing for bed that night in the comfort of her apartment, she sent a text to Alya that her friend would see later in the day.
You were right, I do have a type :(
Okay, semi-serious question! What would each member of Miss Bustier's class in the Scarlet!AU, including Lila, dress up as for Halloween?
Well I think my ideas would probably apply to canon. And obviously I know France doesnât really do Halloween (at least not how America does), so weâre gonna just retcon reality and pretend Halloween is a common thing to these kids, so basically:
Marinette: A character costume. From a cartoon or movie or game, whatever it is sheâs handmaking and handstyling all of it and is scouring the internet to make sure every detail is 100% canon accurate. Every year she tries to outdo herself by getting more and more intricate characters. Year 1 - Princess Peach Paper Mario version. Year 5 - Princess Peach Smash Bros verison.
Adrien: Itâs the first year he gets to participate and itâs not some bougie adult wine drinking party, so he either goes for a visual pun (sticking a bunch of beige paint swatches to himself to be 50 Shades of Grey) or goes super basic royalty free costume, like A Vampire or A Devil. If he has a partner heâd totally go couples costumes, but who decides the costumes depends on the partner. (Marinette would totally bow to his whims but Kagami would reel him in)
Alya: Sheâs been in different store bought Majestia costumes since she was old enough to call the shots. Only this year is she going for Hometown Heroes, but sheâs completely caught between who to choose - Ladybug because obviously, or Carapace because her boyfriend, or Rena Rouge because itâs hilarious?! So many options!!!
Nino: Heâs never gotten super into it but keeps it alive for Chris. Typically heâll pull together a âcloset costumeâ, like pulling out the plaid button up and sticking some straw out of the pockets to be a scarecrow. Going to parties with Alya makes him want to try a little harder this year so heâll probably actually buy a full costume this year to go with whatever she decides to be (âWait, youâre gonna dress as me this year?!â)
Canon Chloe: Sheâs worn her Ladybug costume a few too many times in public, so sheâll probably go for Queen Bee but with a twist - like a full ballgown princess but Queen Bee themed. Itâs super expensive decorated with real rhinestones, as are all the costumes sheâs had in the past because sheâs in a personal competition with Marinette. It kills her that Marinette always gets way more compliments on her costumes.Â
SL Chloe: Same as above but Scarlet Lady themed. Sheâs at least smart enough to forgo the mask and demands pockets to shove Tikki into.
Canon Sabrina: In order to match Chloe but not outshine her, Sabrina is ordered to be a bee (to be Queen Beeâs âPollenâ, though Sabrina doesnât know what that means). Sheâs an adorabee and her outfit is also pretty expensive because it was commissioned by Chloe, but that also means Sabrina got zero input on it.Â
SL Sabrina: Itâs the first time Sabrina hasnât relied on Chloe to âmakeâ her costume (or rather DECIDE her costume) and all the independence has Sabrina scrambling a bit. In the end, by borrowing some of her dadâs old things, she dresses as a Cutie Cop complete with a too big hat and handcuffs she has to SWEAR not to use.
Max: With some carefully painted cardboard and foam, heâs one of the bots from UMS III. Despite the crudeness of the costume, it is also meticulously model accurate, and also very difficult to move in.
Kim: 100% one of those inflatable T Rex costumes.
Alix: Sheâd probably wear her regular clothes but invest in a high quality wolf mask and hands and sneak up on people all night.
Nathaniel: Heâd have to prepare months in advance but heâd show up as Super Nathan. He skips on the face paint but considering itâs his OC and he still draws it in his comic, I think heâs not emotionally tainted by being an akuma and itâs own little âFuck Youâ to Hawkmoth. Plus it makes Chloe stay 10000 miles away from him.Â
Mylene: Mylene walks into a costume shop with no plan, wanting to be taken in by how a costume looks and feels on her. Because of that she has an eclectic background and no one ever knows what sheâs going to come as. Last year she was a racoon because the costume dress had ears on the hoodie, but maybe this year she comes as a Mad Hatter because the costume came with a lot of pieces. Who knows?!
Ivan: He knows heâs going to avoid anything with a mask if he wants his girlfriend to come near him. That does knock off a lot of his favorite horror characters, so he goes an Adrien route and shows up as A Ninja. Yep. Definitely not a video game character, noooo, this is TOTALLY just A Ninja. Uhuh.
Rose: Unicorn Princess. With wings. And a tiara. And A wand. And a tail. And rainbow chalk in her hair. And stickers.Â
Juleka: Sheâs a witch, but not a store bought cute short skirt one. Like a voodoo hag that dragged herself out of the swamp to curse mankind. Sheâs basically one every year so she just adds onto her costume and every year her witch costume just increases in collectables. Vials around her waist and a fake crow on her hat, a spell book appeared one year, and spider webs draped over her shoulders. Uh, are you sure thatâs just a costume Juleka?
Canon Lila: She doesnât care much about the actual costume but takes a lot of care making sure itâs juuuuuust towing the line between cute and sexy. It needs to be attention getting but not bad attention. She goes for slightly childish characters, like Little Red Riding Hood, so she can get away with saying she thought it was âjust adorable!â when she knows itâs showing her off. If I wanted her to be even cheekier, Iâd have her find a âSexyâ Rena Rouge costume thatâs pretty much Rena Rouge but in a skirt, and watch Alya convulse.
SL Lila: Drop the act and just admit she likes feeling sexy. Her friends help her find costumes that are age appropriate but scratch that itch and Lila puts more thought into the actual character. She gets a new appreciation for merging horror with pretty stuff - like a Zombie Cheerleader or Elsa but with ice coming out of her skin. It also lets her stretch her makeup skills.Â
#on the lila thing I just wanna say that I used to have that embarrassing 'i wanna be a sexy grown up' phase#so that's where I'm coming from with that logic#halloween#my opinion#halloween costumes#ml#miraculous ladybug#crisisdparity
BURN THE WITCH! - Part 8
Finally! It is finished.
Also...warnings I guess for itchiness. And severe scratching due to itchiness.
Here goes:
Lila was prideful. Exceedingly so. But let it not be said she was too prideful to know when it was time to jump ship.
And the ship that was Paris was sinking fast.
All thanks to Ladybug, of course. Because âLittle Miss Righteousnessâ just had to stick her nose into Lilaâs business. How dare that insect make a fool out of her?
She would have had to leave soon anyway. While she could certainly come up with a new story to fool her classmates and explain away the previous unfortunate incident, it would still be difficult since they were starting to wise up and it would be harder to keep them under her thumb if she stayed much longer. While the akuma had been dealt with and everyoneâs memories erased, Lila didnât want to take any chances.
Then there was the matter with Hawk Moth. She had some suspicion of his identityâbut that was all it was: suspicion. The evidence she had to go on was circumstantial at best. Unless she could find something to confirm it, it was useless. And even if she was right, there wasnât much likelihood that she would be able to make use of it without proof.
She clenched her fists in growing rage at the reminder.
How dare he turn on her like that?!
There was something that grated at her knowing that she would be leaving things unfinished. That she would be letting him get away unscathed. She at least wanted to get some sort of payback for him leaving her to dry.
If there was any real justice in the world, she would get the chance to try and take his Miraculous for herself. Wouldnât that be ironic? Especially after how he had cut ties with her.
But now he would expect her to try something. He may even try to take her out himself first. It was what Lila would do in his place.
No, it was better to cut her losses. She still had the an exemplary school record. She still had her position and experience as a model to take with her. She could just move somewhere new and start over. There was nothing worth staying in Paris for anyway. She was getting bored here.
Her decision had absolutely nothing to do with Ladybugâs threat though! Ladybug was clearly the one jealous of her! She wasnât scared of that pathetic little bug! She was too much of a goody-goody to actually do anything to Lila herself! Ladybug was supposed to be held to a higher standard, after all! She was just bluffing! She wouldnât actually do anything to her! So Lila had no reason to be scared! And she wasnât!
It took a moment for Lila to realize her hand holding the phone was trembling. She bit back a curse and clutched the hand with the other to hide it and force the them to still. But when that didnât work, she set the phone on speaker before putting it on its stand on the table.
Lilaâs mother, bless her, was ignorant of this inner turmoilâor if she was aware, she simply attributed it to Lilaâs claims. The woman was all too willing to blindly trust her precious daughter. All Lila had to do was use that and soon Paris and all its problems would be nothing but a bad memory.
She busied with drying her hair with a towel while regaling her mother with the tale of the latest attackâalbeit a heavily edited version. Honestly though, wasnât that stupid Cure of Ladybugâs supposed to fix everything to how it was before the attack? So shouldnât she have been dry already? And back in her new designer clothes?
As it was, her fall in the Seine had left her hair a mess, and she barely had time to simply wash it properly, much less take the good long soak she really craved. She was fortunate enough that there had been time to return home and try to clean up at all. And especially to get rid of those clothes she had âborrowedâ from Marinetteâs home. The last thing she needed was to be seen running around in that. Not that there was anything wrong with the clothes themselves, but questions would no doubt arise as to where she had gotten them or why she was wearing them. And the last thing she needed was for her mother and Marinette of all people to meet.
After a moment of consideration, she twisted the towel just enough to cause her pain. With a hiss and a gasp, it sounded quite like she had been crying. Enough to fool someone who was not physically there at any rate.
âI just miss Home. Itâs been so long.â She said, ending with a sniffle that may have been partly exaggerated and may have been partly a sign of a cold coming on.
âBut what about your friends? You just seemed to be getting so settled in Paris. You even have a boyfriend. From what youâve been telling me, you two are awfully close. You have a difficult enough time seeing each other as it is. Wonât moving just make it worse?â
Geez, the woman was being annoyingly persistent today.
âWe can write and video chat.â Lila replied easily. She could just âbreak it offâ later. Maybe claim heâd been cheating on her. That was usually good for some sympathy points.
Her mother paused at that. âBut long distance relationships are much more difficult. And I thought you liked it in Paris? Youâve been doing so well here. I hadnât seen you so happy in a long time.â
Of course sheâd been happy. She had people devoted to her every whim, fame and connections as a model, and a cushy front row seat to the downfall of that so-called hero.
Lila narrowly avoided clicking her tongue in irritation. Why did her mother have to be so parentally concerned now of all times?
âBut Mom, Iâm just worried about all of the akumas!â She said with exaggerated earnesty. âThis last one was really dangerous! I could have been killed!â She bit her lip and hitched her breath, as if trying to hold back tears. Or hide her lack of them. It was a good thing her mother wasnât there to see and possibly call her out on it.
Not that she would. She was such a good mother like that. Overly trusting and easily duped. How many teenagers could say they were so lucky?
âIâve tried to make the best of Paris, but itâs just too much!â Lila cried.
âOh, my poor dear!â Came her mothersâs voice over the phone. âIâm so sorry I didnât realize how much this move has had an effect on you.â
In that instant, she knew she had good as won. From the safety of her home and with no one in direct sight, Lila allowed herself a smug grin of victory before schooling her expression back to that of the pitiful child she wanted the older woman to see her as. No one may have been there to see it, but as an avid actress of her skill level, it helped her to match her desired tone and inflection with an appropriate expression. She gasped loudly and grabbed the phone to bring it closer to her.
âBut Mom, I know how important this job is to you! I donât want to get in the way...â
âItâs all right, dear. I can contact your aunt and have you stay with her and your cousins until I can finish things here.â
That made her frown.
Lilaâs aunt was...not ideal, as her cousins had been among the earlier victims of Lilaâs manipulations. She dared say her aunt favored her over any of her children by the time sheâd left them. And her cousins were wary of her to say the least after the way she had played them against each other and themselves. But that had been a couple of years ago and she couldnât be sure they hadnât caught on and solidified their relationships to better counter her.
Still, if Paris was any indication of how easily people could be fooled and turned against one another, she could probably manage it again.
âLila?â Her mother called, drawing her attention back. âAre you all right?â
Lila played up the uncertainty. âI donât knowâŚI wouldnât want to cause you or Auntie troubleâŚI can just stay here.â She looked down and to the side and spoke tonelessly, the picture of a dejected daughter. âIâm sure I can just try to put my fear aside and make the best of itâŚâ
âNonsense!â Her mother exclaimed. âYou should never have to make yourself suffer like that!â
There was the sound of papers being shifted, followed by the clicking of a mouse. No doubt her mother was already looking into the procedure on how to transfer.
âI only want you to be safe and well, mi bella.â Her mother said, softly. âAnd if Paris isnât the best fit for you, then Iâll discuss the matter with the Embassy and see about ending my assignment early.â
âBut Mom, you donât have to! I can manage, really!â She half-heartedly attempted. âThe heroes are even starting to do aâŚhalf-way decent job.â
Her mother scoffed. âA job that they have been at for over a year and still canât manage! Itâs clearly not safe here if the cityâs own heroes canât even do their jobs properly.â
Hook.
âBut letâs get you taken out of that school first.â
Line.
Lila smirked, unseen.
âThank you, Mom.â
Sinker.
Another loss. And a worse one, even.
Witch Hunter had been ruthless and efficient. Perhaps one of his better creations to date. Her powers to know oneâs sins and enthrall anyone who heard her announcements soon gained her the entirety of Paris under her swayâand by extension, his. That the powers specifically targeted one girl would have been a disadvantage had the girl in question not had such aâŚsordid history. That history fortunately gave plenty of opportunities to rally others to the cause, but as evidenced from the fight, it still had limitations.
If only Lila had some ounce of subtlety. Then even Ladybug would have been affected by Witch Hunter, and both Miraculous would have been willingly handed over to him if it meant getting rid of the girl in exchange. The key had been that Ladybugâs opinion of Lila had already been so low that no ârevealâ of her misdeeds had been enough to enthrall her.
How curious. He had been aware of Lilaâs grudge against Ladybug, but he hadnât realized that the feelings were mutual. Just what had Lila done to make Ladybug despise her so?
He could hazard a guess, but not any that would lead him anywhere. Lilaâs list of crimes was rather extensive. And despite the knowledge he had of her, even he couldnât boast immunity to the rage.
So what had kept Ladybug from giving up on her?
Was it Ladybugâs Miraculous that protected her? Some sort of inner strength? Or was she already aware of his use of Lila? But even if she was aware, how would that be enough?
He had been able to keep his head, but some of the things he heard had been enough to turn his stomach and make him question his alliance with her. He had been accepting at first of her audacity in how she approached him on both sides of the mask, as she presented herself as useful and willing to aid him. And she had been useful, he would give her that. Her main concern was having others under her sway and she was willing to do anything to maintain itâŚeven remove anyone who would become a threat to her.
He hadnât lied when he told Lila she was of no more use to him. But that hadnât been the entire truth. Given what he now realized, she was more of a threat than he had ever considered. He couldnât put it past her to try to figure out his identity to take his Miraculous for herself.
He took a breath.
Perhaps...he needed to reconsider the girlâs position? On both sides of the mask.
âSir? What should be done about Lila Rossi?â While the interruption from Nathalie was timely, it didnât truly disrupt his current thought process.
It was a good question. She had been a willing ally and useful tool in manipulating people. He certainly had praise for her skills.
But...
Perhaps he should have been more cautious and try to question just how she obtained those skills?
As well as her intentions for the future. For himself and especially for his son.
How much did she know? Had she discovered him? Did she suspect? What plans did she have? And now that she had been revealed as a willing ally, what information could others get out of her that could lead back to him?
Lila Rossi was a threat. He could see that now.
But just how much of a risk was she? How much did he risk if she were allowed to remain free? It was clear Ladybug knew of their alliance, and she would be keeping an eye on the girl from here on out. What else could she gain from Lila if he didnât remove her?
âSir?â
He paused, considering for a moment.
Then came to a decision.
âNothing.â
Nathalie started at that in surprise.
âHer contract with the company will be terminated, of course.â He stated, turning to go to his desk and prepare to sign the necessary paperwork. âThe company will put out an official statement that we deny any knowledge of her history or dealings, and that we disavow her actions. Anything else is already held under a nondisclosure agreement she signed upon her hiring. Though we should prepare legal action if she attempts to retaliate.â
âButâŚwhat should be done about her assistance to you as Hawk Moth?â Nathalie asked.
He straightened.
âNothing.â He repeated. And he did not like to repeat himself.
âSir? Is that wise? She has been an accomplice.â She warned him with a frown. âWhat if she has learned who you are? She could become dangerous.â
He sighed.
âShe is a loose thread. But to act on it at this point and try to remove her will only backfire. Ladybug will doubtless be keeping an eye on her from now on. We would risk more if we were caught trying to get rid of her.â
âBut since you left her to Witch Hunterâs mercy, she may try to retaliate against you.â
Oh, of that he had little doubt. It was in her nature to turn on those who would not play by her rules.
He had little choice at that point. Witch Hunter and all of Paris were focused solely on seeing the girl punished. He had no way of knowing Ladybug wasnât already part of the crowd by that time. His mistake was underestimating Ladybugâs will, but even then, would he really have responded differently?
Lila Rossi had lost her use as a tool, and with her antics had used up any good will he had towards her. She lacked the subtlety or even the good sense to simply limit the extent of her lies lest she be found out and face backlash. But much like Miss Bourgeois, she seemed inclined to push the limits of what she could get away with. And unfortunately, with superheroes and villains in Paris, the bounds of what she could normally get away with had increased drastically. Even worse was that she fully seemed to believe she âdeservedâ the praise and attention simply for claiming things she had never done.
And given how one of her first actions was to buy a trinket to pass off as a false Miraculous and proclaim herself a hero, how long would it have taken for her to decide that she âdeservedâ a Miraculous as well?
âIt was only a matter of time before she set her sights too high. It would be better to cut her off now before she got any ideas about taking a Miraculous, even if it was my own.â
He couldnât put it past her. Because as much as she despised Ladybug, how could such a girl be satisfied only with her destruction? If she did aid in Ladybugâs defeat, sheâd likely just take the Ladybug Miraculous for herself at the first opportunity, and then Gabriel would be back at square one.
No, worse. Because Lila Rossi wouldnât risk herself for others. It was highly likely she would run away with the Miraculous and then he would lose any chance of obtaining it in this lifetime.
âŚ
Lila Rossi had her uses, but it was best to cut his losses with her now. And Witch Hunter had been the prime time to do so.
It would have been foolish of him to risk his hold over Witch Hunter just to spare Lila at that point. But there was no doubt that she will seek retribution for it. She was certainly spiteful enough, even when it would be to her own detriment.
StillâŚ
âThat girl has caused enough problems. We donât need her interfering with our plans.â
Nathalie clutched her tablet, still worried. âBut if she knowsâŚif she tries to reveal youâŚâ
âLila Rossi is a liar.â He stated as he pulled up news footage of the latest akuma fight. âShe is a liar and now people know it. Anything she thinks she knows, we can dismiss as a jilted teenager with delusions of grandeur and an unhealthy interest in my son.â
He paused for a moment, then leaned back in his chair to look to his assistant.
âIâm sure youâve heard the tale of the âBoy Who Cried Wolfâ?â
âI am familiar with it, yes.â She replied, albeit confused as to the sudden subject change. âBut what does that have to do with this?â
âIn the story, the boy is eaten. But his final claim is ultimately proven true, for all the good it does him.â He looked back to the footage, pausing it on Lilaâs expression while she was on the pyre.
âBut if we do not respondâŚif Hawk Moth does nothing to silence her, there is no âproofâ to her claims. People will suspect it to be another lie. Even moreso, that itâs merely an attempt to get back at me as her âformer employerâ. There will be no âwolfâ to validate her claims, even once sheâs gone. So yes, we will leave Miss Rossi to her daily life. Let her say what she may think she knows.â
He smirked.
âShe could scream it to the world and no one would believe her.â
It took a while for them to have their conversation and for Marinette to dry her tears. By the time she was able to reach some level of calm, it was almost time to return to school.
One would think that they would be allowed the rest of the day to recover from the akuma attack, but Paris as a whole and the school in particular seemed used to the frequent interruptions by this point. Though perhaps it was more of a testament to Ladybugâs efficiency in dealing with akumas.
âŚas well as the efficiency of the civilians to set up an entire festival on a spur of the moment. Perhaps she should recommend they try another one at some point? One that doesnât involve lighting anyone on fire?
When she went downstairs, she found her parents in something of a state of worry. They looked up in surprise when she came down, but were relieved to see her.
âMarinette? When did you get home? I didnât see you come in.â Tom said.
âA little while ago. We must have just missed each other.â Marinette replied quickly. Then frowned when she notice their expressions. âIs everything okay?â
âThere was an akuma attack earlier and one of your schoolmates came here.â Sabine explained. âWe had tried to help her and allowed her to change clothes here into something dry, but she took it upon herself to go into your room.â
Marinetteâs eyes widened. âWhat?!â
âI donât know what she was doing in there.â Sabine huffed, angrily. âWhen I caught her, she tried to claim she had gotten lost. Then your father had gotten a text message from Nadja about a âWitchâ and she took off running.â
Lila. There was no one else it could have been. Which meant she had probably done something to sabotage her.
Great. Just great.
They had checked her room and taken pictures of how she left it since they were uncertain of what she may have messed with. As it stood, they wanted to know if anything had been stolen and were questioning whether to call the police.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart.â Her father told her.
âWe both are. She was soaked and we had wanted to give her some privacy while she changed.â Sabine shook her head. âI hadnât thought she would go roaming around the house, much less sneak into your room.â
Tom rested a hand on Sabineâs shoulder. âWe should follow up on this though. Maybe Roger will have some advice.â
Sabine nodded to him before turning to her daughter. âWill that be all right, dear?â
Marinette hesitated.
She would be lying if she said she wasnât frustrated. With them. With the situation. All of it.
In their defense, they hadnât realized it was Lila. And even if they had, they werenât aware of just how horrible Lila truly was. Despite Marinetteâs pleas of innocence during her expulsion, her parents hadnât fully taken her word for it and even afterwards hadnât quite believed that Lila was a chronic liar.
But there was a part of herâthe part that was still full of indignant anger over the incident and would have formed the core of the Princess Justice akuma Hawk Moth had wanted her to beâthat blamed them. If they had just listened to her back then. If they had simply heard her out. If they had believed her about Lila.
They should have known. They should have recognized Lila. They should have remembered what she had done before and at the very least thought to keep an eye on her just in case she tried anything like she had before.
âŚbut Marinette didnât have it in her to hold a grudge. Especially after what she had seen with Lila and her own grudge.
It wasnât their fault, it was Lilaâs. And while she was irritated with her parents for their negligence, she was willing to forgive them and keep her focus on the one who really deserved her ire.
So for now, she would try to move forward and do what she could.
âIâm not happy about it. But if anything can be done, Iâd like to see if we could.â
Her parents agreed and offered reassurances that they would try to address the issue. They also promised her they would be more cautious in the future, which was nice fo them. They offered to let her stay home from school, but that was one thing she had to turn down.
Whatever Lila had done, Marinette probably wouldnât know until Lila revealed it. It made her dread returning to school. But she couldnât keep putting it off. If she went now, she could at least try to meet with the others and head off anything Lila could do.
So she made a quick rush to the kitchen to get a small lunch for herself and some cookies for Tikki. With her parents otherwise occupied, that meant that Tikki could come out of hiding and they could talk freely for a bit longer.
âMarinette, maybe you should take a break and stay home for the rest of the school day?â Tikki suggested. And wow, she was certainly taking this âbe more supportiveâ role to heart.
Something in Marinette warmed at that. And in any other circumstances, she would happily have taken Tikkiâs advice.
âIâm fine, Tikki. Really.â
Tikki frowned, clearly not buying it. âBut youâve spent half of your day dealing with the crisis caused by Lila and then the akuma that was caused by that crisis, all while trying to keep Lila safe. Even when she was working against you.â
Yeah. There was that.
âYou did a lot today. Both as Ladybug and Marinette.â Tikki continued. âNo one would fault you if you let yourself recover.â
Marinette hesitated at that.
It was tempting. She was tired. And if she was being honest, she really just wanted to sleep and not deal with anything until tomorrow at least.
ButâŚ
She bit her lip.
For all that Tikkiâs words made sense and clearly came from a place of concern for her, Marinette couldnât help but be reminded of only a couple hours ago where Tikki had been trying to convince her to let Lila burn.
She knew that this was different. A matter of self care and health. But even though itâs something sheâs wanted and something she appreciates hearing from her kwami, it still felt so strange now that she was experiencing it.
This was something she was going to have to get used to. And she would, she was sure. After all, Tikki was clearly trying for her. And Marinette wanted nothing more than to reciprocateâand also to just drop off into sweet blessed sleepâŚ
HoweverâŚ
âI need to see this through.â She stated, resolutely.
She needed to get back to the school. Both for class and to check on her friends.
After all, even if her Miraculous Cure had fixed the damage caused from the akuma, that didnât mean her friends were fine. And she still wanted to check in on Rose at the very least.
Tikki looked up at her sadly. Then she floated over and nuzzled Marinetteâs cheek, showing her silent support.
It only took a few minutes to gather the rest of her things and make her way to the school.
Even if Tikki assured her that what happened wasnât her fault, Marinette still felt the need to apologize to Rose for what had happened. Maybe they could still find some way to fix things.
She reached the school in minutes and had almost immediately run into one of her classmates.
Just not the one she had been expecting.
âAdrien?â
He spun to face her, appearing nervous. Even panicked.
âOh, hey! Marinette! Hi! Hey, umâŚhey.â He finished, looking embarrassed. âHowâŚare you?â
âIâm fine. JustâŚhave a lot on my mind.â She shrugged. âJustâŚwith Rose and the akuma and everything.â
âGood. Thatâs good. Well, not good-good about the akuma. But good that youâre okay. Um. Me too.â He looked away, clearly still nervous.
She frowned in concern. âAre you okay?â
âFine! Iâm fine! JustâŚyâknowâŚgot caught up in the akuma attack and was one of her minions for a while. But Ladybug saved me so weâre good.â He said with a not fully sincere smile.
âIâm sorry to hear that.â She hadnât recalled seeing Adrien among the mob. But given how big it had gotten, she wouldnât be surprised.
He hesitated for a moment before speaking.Â
âMarinetteâŚone of the things Witch Hunter saidâŚâ He looked her in the eyes. âWhy didnât you tell me Lila had threatened you?â
She straightened in shock. âWhat?!â
He rubbed the back of his head, looking to the ground. âIâm sorry, itâs justâŚshe said a lot of things Lila had done that I hadnât known. LikeâŚwellâŚâ The book. Her framing Adrien for insulting Nino. Her working with his father. âHow she threatened you?â
âOh.â She said, a bit blankly. Because what else could she say?
âWhy didnât you tell me?â He implored her. âI had said we were in this together, butâŚyou didnât tell me she did that.â
It was true. She hadnât.
ButâŚwhy hadnât she?
âIâŚdidnât think it was a big deal?â
Why was she asking him instead of telling him?
âNot a bigâMarinette, she threatened you!â His eyes widened in realization. âHer expelling you was part of her threat, wasnât it?â
She flinched, but nodded.
âJustâŚwhy didnât you tell me? I could have helped you! I would have done more!â
She waved her hands frantically, trying to console him. âItâs okay, Adrien! Really! You were onlyâit was justâŚâ
A tap at her leg caught her attention. It came from her purse. A quick glance downward revealed Tikki looking up at her from the safety of the clutch she carried with her. The little kwami remained hidden to Adrien, fortunately, but visible to her. Tikki looked up at her with wide eyes and gave a smile and small nod of encouragement.
Why would sheâ?
Oh.
Oh, right.
âNo.â She admitted. âItâs not okay.â
She had been spending months now convincing herself that things were okay when they werenât. That she was okay when she wasnât. And that if she at any point felt she wasnât okay, it was a failing on her part.
That wasnât a healthy way to live, as she was only just now starting to understand that.
âI donât know if you realize this, but Iâve been listening to you on things because I look up to you. I took your advice because I trusted you and believed that you only had everyoneâs best interest at heart.â
âBut I did!â He insisted automatically before catching himself. âI mean, I thought I was...â
âI trusted you over my own intuition. I listened to you when you kept emphasizing the feelings of others over my own. Chloe was bad enough, but Lila too? Even if they were the ones who were horrible, it felt like I was expected to just...â She struggled for a moment to find the wording to accurately convey her feelings before simply shrugging. âJust deal with it.â
He winced. He hadnât realized the impact heâd had.
âBecause of that,â she continued, âwhenever I started to have an issue, I brushed it off because I figured that if there was a problem with someone and something they were doing...well, it was just me, right? So I had to do the right thing. I had to be the bigger person. I had to be the âEveryday Ladybugâ. Even when I didnât feel like I could be.â
She took a breath.
âAnd that wasnât fair to me.â
He looked up at her. Sad and worried and sympathetic all in one. âI never meant to make you feel like you didnât matter. I just thought...â
âChloeâs your friend so it makes sense that youâd want to defend her.â Marinette reasoned. âBut Lila, too?â She wrung her hands. âThey both did horrible things. They both hurt me...really badly. And it felt like youâve cared more about their feelings than mine.â
âThatâs not it!â He exclaimed as he jumped to his feet. âI just...I know they arenât then nicest, but theyâre struggling. ItâsâŚharder for them than it is for you.â
âIf theyâre having a hard time, itâs because itâs entirely of their own making. Chloe has been bullying everyone for years, so itâs not our fault that we donât want to continue to deal with that mistreatment. And Lila has been actively lying to everyone not to be like, but just so she can manipulate them. I get that you care, but your attempts to protect the people you see as âneeding itâ has resulted in harm to other people who donât deserve it. You arenât just enabling them...youâre rewarding them.
âYou said to take the highroad, but whatever the highroad is, I donât think thatâs it.â
He gaped at her, some combination of shocked and horrified.
âBut I havenât been encouraging any of this! I tried to help you! I made a deal with her so she would get you back into school.â
Well, that was something she hadnât known. Although his sudden friendliness with Lila had been suspicious. As had the schools sudden change of heart about her expulsion. But she hadnât realized the two had been related.
She was grateful to him. Truly. He had only done it for her.
However...
âI never asked you to.â
She wouldnât have wanted it had she known.
âI never asked you to become Lilaâs toy or put yourself in such a bad position for my sake. I only asked you to stand by me and support me.â
She had turned to him that day, wanting himâjust someone who knew the truth to speak up in her defense.
To say she was innocent.
To admit that Lila had lied.
To just say she was believed. That she was worth believing in.
âAnd you didnât.â
He stared at her. Long and hard. As if this had never occurred to him before. He seemed unable to speak for a full minute.
UntilâŚ
âIâm sorry.â
She jumped in surprise.
âI was a hypocrite. I knew she was lying but I convinced myself it wasnât that bad. And even when I knew people were hurt, it didnât matter until her lies hurt me.â
He gave a weak laugh.
âWitch HunterâŚdid you know? The way her power worked was that you only fell under her spell when she announced something Lila did that truly makes you angry.â
He covered his face. In resignation? In guilt?
âI only fell under Witch Hunterâs spell when she revealed Lila had been spying on me for my father. Not when I found out what she did to Rose. Not when I found out what she did to Nino. Not even when I found out what she did to you.â He shook his head. âIt only mattered, really truly mattered when it affected me.â
He hung his head in shame.
âIâm a real jerk.â
The denial was automatic on her lips.
âYou arenât a jerk!â She insisted. âYou were justââ
He gave a bitter laugh, cutting her off.
âI was so proud of myself that day. When I told you to take the highroad and not out Lila.â
He looked up at her smiling humorlessly.
âDo you know what itâs like to watch you? All the time, I see you doing the right thing. Standing up for people. Doing things to make people happy. Making things better.â
He sighed.
âIt felt...it felt good being the one you would listen to and follow.â He admitted. âYou were looking up to me and taking my advice. I was so proud of myself! I got to be the one who had solved the problem and made everything better!â He announced with a wave of his hands in an exaggerated fashion before slumping down.
âIâm such an idiot.â
She stared.
HeâŚreally admired her that much?
And at that time, heâd just been trying to impress her?
ThatâŚhadnât been the inclination she had gotten at all. It had just felt that he was admonishing her at those times for not being the bigger person. Looking back, now that she was willing to admit it, it had felt like more expectations and double standards.
âI canât say what you did was okay, because it wasnât. Lila was able to hurt me. And now sheâs hurt Rose and everyone else now because neither of us spoke up when we should have.â
She took a breath.
âBut I think I get it. About wanting someone you care about to listen and look up to you. Because that was how Iâve felt about you.â
He jumped and looked up at her in surprise.
Because when it came down to it, hadnât she been the same? Doing things that had hurt her or others because she had been so focused on Adrien and wanting him to think well of her?
Was it ironic that it was only now, after everything that had happened this day, that she could finally voice even a bit of the feelings she has for him?
They just werenât the feelings she thought sheâd ever be sharingâŚ
But maybe, she thought as she felt Tikkiâs comforting presence by her side, these were the ones she needed to?
âIt hurts that even when Iâm doing the right thing and you say youâre with me, it still feels like youâre not really on my side. Evenâespecially when Iâve let things get this far at your request.â
âI didnât meanâIâm sorryââ He started, but he broke off as she raised a hand to stop him.
âI just...â She shook her head. âIf we really are friends, I wish you would show it more. And...that you would stand up for me the way you do for them.â
He stared at her in shock. Perhaps a bit of horror as her words really got to him.
âIâm sorry.â He murmured. âI never meant to make you feel that way. I never wanted you to think I donât care.â
He stood straight and held out his arms to her in clear indication ofâŚsomething. But she was exhaustedâboth mentally and physically as it was and her mind was a bit slow to catch just what he was intending to do.
âI know you can handle things, Marinette. Youâre strong. And brave. Itâs why I know I can trust you when things get tough. ButâŚthat you can handle things doesnât mean you should have to. It doesnât mean you donât need support.â
He smiled at her. And oh damn, that smile. It was like a miniature sun and she couldnât help but stare even as her brain was yelling at her to look away.
The next thing she knew, she was in his arms andâŚohâŚthis must be how being held by the sun felt likeâŚ
âI want to be someone who you can count on to support you, Marinette.â
Oh. Okay. Nice. This was nice. More of this please. More of just all of this.
The hug must have lasted an eternity. An hour at least? Because it felt like forever until she was drawn out of the soothing feeling by a rumbling and a series of sounds that seemed to mean somethingâŚ
Could she justâŚstay like this? For a day or two? Maybe the rest of her life? Tikki tried, bless her, but kwami arms just werenât the same as human arms and the feeling of being wrapped up in sunshine was bliss.
Oh wait, he was talking more. She should probably be listening right now.
ââcontract. Maybe I could talk to them? See what else they know of that could help?â
âHmm?â
She was dazed and completely out of it, something Adrien seemed to pick up on as he released his hold (noo, donât do that!) and backed away (noooooo) to armâs length to look her over.
âMarinette? Are you okay?â
She blinked a few times as her mind reoriented to where she was.
And more specifically to who she was with.
âOh! Right! Fine! Youâre fineâI mean, IâM fine. JustâŚâ She sighed, rubbing at one eye with the palm of her hand. âJust aâŚlong day.â
Maybe she should have stayed home after all if just one hug could do thatâŚ
Adrien seemed to notice this and frowned in concern. He took in her state and apparently there was something about her appearance she had missed earlier because he seemed to get the same idea.
âMarinette, are you okay? If youâre tired, maybe you should go home and rest?â
She shook her head insistently. âNo. I canât.â
He rested a hand on her shoulder. âYou donât have to push yourself. Remember? Iâm going to support you. And I know everyone else would understand.â
She didnât think they wouldnât. But as much as she just wanted to sleep until tomorrow and skip the rest of this day, she wasnât sure she would be able to relax at home if she didnât know what was happening with her friends.
âIf nothing else, I want to check up on Rose.â Seeing that he looked ready to argue, she rushed on. âI need this. Please.â
He hesitated. And she was worried he would push the issue, because she was sure that she would give in if he did. She just did not have the energy to argue at this point. Fortunately though, he seemed to understand as he took her arm in his.
âOkay. But Iâll be right here with you.â
Any other day, she would be a stammering mess if Adrien were to take her arm and walk with her like this.
Today, she was simply grateful.
__________________
It didnât take them too long to find Rose. She was in the hallway talking with Alya. The two seemed deep in conversation that they didnât notice the duo approach.
âRose!â Marinette exclaimed, loosening her arm from Adrienâs hold and rushing to her friend. âAre you okay?â
The blonde looked up at her, tearful.
âIâm okay.â She murmured as she wiped at her eyes.Â
âBut are you?â Alya broke in, asking Marinette. âGirl, I saw the footage!â
Marinette blinked.
âFootage?â She asked, and then started to back away at the expression on Alyaâs face.
Alya could be headstrong, but she never really got angry. Upset, certainly. Annoyed, often. But even in the heights of Lilaâs worst attempts to make Marinette look bad, Alya had never truly gotten angryâjust righteous and in Marinetteâs opinion that was admittedly a bit resentful at the time, acting a bit superior. Perhaps the only time she had ever seen her friend look truly angry was during Heroâs Day, and even then it took a hit from Dark Cupid and Hawk Mothâs control to get her there.
So seeing Alya looking ready to claw someoneâs eyes out wasâŚunsettling, to say the least.
Even Adrien apparently seemed to think so, as he moved up to Marinette and almost seemed to position himself slightly between them. âAlya? What happened?â
Despite Adrienâs attempt to act as a barrier, Marinette tried to reach out, concerned for her friendâs state. The way she was looking, Marinette half wondered if she wasnât still affected by Witch Hunter. A quick glance to a worried Rose disproved that easily enough, but perhaps it was a remnant of her power the Cure missed? âAre you okay?â
âWhat do you mean am I okay? Are YOU okay?!â Alya shouted, pointing at Marinette. âGirl, I saw what what happened with you and Lila!â
Marinette jumped. Her mind immediately raced to her call out of Lila just a little over an hour ago. Did someone record her going off? Was there something that had revealed her as Ladybug? Had she messed up?!
âWhat?! No waitâitâs not what youâI didnât meanâ!â
Alya was pulling up her phone, and by the time she turned it so that Marinette and Adrien could see, the video already started playing. The video was recorded from someone within the akumaâs mobânot yet grown to the level of the city yet.
Marinette briefly recognized that the location in the video seemed familiar but hadnât quite registered how when a sudden commotion caught the attention of the group. The person recording turned the camera sharply, which blurred and then focused on a fallen figure a short distance away.
ââconspirator helping the Witch! Someone grab her!â
âŚoh. That figure was her.
And the moment when Lila had betrayed her and tried to sacrifice her to the mob.
âHey! Thatâs Marinette!â Came Alyaâs voice from the phone, shortly followed by the exclamations from the crowd that Marinette already knew were coming because she had lived this and yet despite seeing it on record, she still struggled to believe it actually happened.
âŚthe crowd leaving her alone part. Not the Lila betraying her part. THAT, she could believe no question.
âI canât believe she would do that!â Alya exclaimed. The real Alya. The present one. Who was standing in front of her and not the one in the phoneâwho was almost disturbingly cheerful in how she was calling for Lilaâs blood.
âŚto be honest, Marinette wasnât sure whether that mob Alya or the furious one in front of her scared her more. Present Alya, for her part, was clearly NOT happy about the events.
Neither was Adrien, apparently, as he grabbed the phone from Alya and looked to be furious himself.
âWaitâLila did WHAT?!â He demanded. AndâŚwow, was this what Adrien had been like as part of the mob? She hadnât known he could get that angry.
âShe tried to throw Marinette to the mob!â Alya bit out.
âI canât believe it!â
âHow could sheâ?!â
âWhen Marinette had just been trying to help her!â
âThat lousy little bââ
âWHY did she even think that was necessary?!â
âIs it too late to torch her and say the akuma did it?â
Marinette looked between the two, feeling that she should be saying something but honestly, just getting all the more overwhelmed.
A hand on her arm broke her attention away from the two and back to poor Rose, who looked almost to the point of tears again.
âIâm so sorry, Marinette! I didnât hurt you, did I?â
Oh Rose, you deserved better than this.
âNo! You actually let me go.â She insisted, much to the blondeâs visible relief. âYou were focused only on Lila. And aside from getting people to help you hunt her down, you didnât do anything to anyone else.â
If anything, the people of Paris seemed pretty happy for the excuse.
âŚmaybe she really needed to talk to the Mayor about having a fun festival to just let everyone blow off steam?
She could focus on that later though. She shook her head and returned her attention to Rose. The girl still looked nervous, but less worried at least. That was good.
Rose sniffled. âI didnât know. Iâve just been scared to see what my akuma did.â
âNo one was hurt in the end.â Marinette assured her. âLadybug came and stopped it. Nobody was hurt.â
Because Rose never really wanted to hurt anyone, she was sure. Even if it was Lila.
At most, maybe Lila got a little smokey smell to her. And a lot wet. But she survived. And without burns.
Rose seemed to slump in relief. âIâm so glad.â
And thisâŚthis right here was why it was worth it. Because the difference in Roseâs posture and expression within a few seconds meant a situation she could feel move on from versus a guilt she would be carrying with her all her life.
âI can't believe I almost did that! What did I become!?" Rose cried.
âYou were akumatized. You were rightfully enraged by someone you thought was a friend taking advantage of you. Honestly, the only reason I didn't join in is because nothing about her shocks me anymore.â
Despite the attempt at reassurance, the smaller girl drew in on herself more. She rubbed at her eyes to wipe away tears and merely nodded at Marinetteâs words. Hearing, but not fully agreeing. Or maybe it was the reminder that Marinette had known and tried to reveal Lila sooner to no avail.
Of all people, Rose didnât deserve this. None of the classmates did, but Rose had been particularly trusting and was affected the worst because of this.
She couldnât help it. She hugged Rose. If Adrienâs hug earlier had been so nice for her, maybe this could help the smaller girl in turn.
Rose certainly seemed to appreciate it as she hugged backâŚquite strongly, actually. Marinette had known Rose had some upper body strength given how she had been able to carry Chloe during the Zombizu attack but wow. Rose was smaller than Adrien, but her hug was just as warm but more tight.
Marinette lost herself a bit in the comfort she was giving and receiving. She barely even noticed that Adrien and Alya were still talking. She was peripherally aware that it was happening, but once again had lost track of what they were actually saying.
She had checked on Rose and made sure she was doingâŚwell even if not fully okay. Maybe this was a sign she should go home?
âLIAR!â
It seemed it wasnât to be, however, as a sudden commotion caught her notice, dragging her attention to a gathering down the hall.
And suddenly, Marinette was wide awake.
ââtrusted me. Ladybug knew I would never do such a thing! Thatâs how she was able to ward off Witch Hunter.â
Lila giggled.
âYou could say that the âpower of friendshipâ saved the day!â
Of course she was lying through her teeth once again. Not that she needed to at this point, really. Her mother was firmly in her corner and Lila would be getting to leave Paris soon enough. But there was a part of her that wanted to see if she couldnât convince them one more time.
While she may not have a chance of getting revenge on Hawk Moth, she at least wanted some victory to take with her when she left. After all, Lila was hardly one to simply let things go and let this end without a last hurrah. No, if anything, when the chips were down, she was used to going all in. And if she lost? Well, not like it mattered if she wasnât there to pay afterwards.
This time would be no different.
Truthfully, the only reason she was at the school at all was so her mother could file the paperwork to transfer her out. She hadnât really wanted to go, but she had needed to be there to run interference in case anyone attempted to approach her. It had been part of the reason she had insisted on going despite her âharrowingâ experience. Her mother had insisted on starting the process to remove Lila from the school immediately. And while she was sure no one would recognize the woman if she arrived alone, Lila knew she had to be there to âleadâ the discussion between her mother and the Principal, as well as protect her mother from hearing any untoward rumors that could taint her view of her loving and trusted daughter.
Lila hadnât intended to be caught by her soon to be former classmates. The original plan had been to simply disappear from their lives and leave them with their guilt and uncertainty. It was part of the reason she had agreed to come with her mother to the school so soon, as she had expected that everyone should be in class by the time they arrived. But her mother had gotten out earlier than expected, and people were still milling about the school.
She had kept her head down and hoped that no one would notice her. But luck was not in her favor it seemed, as Bustier had been late for some unknown reason, so her students had chosen to hang out in the hallways instead of waiting in the classroom or simply calling it a day and going home early.
A minor hiccup. She was sure that they would be forced to leave once class started. She separated from her mother with the pretense of saying goodbye to all of her friends, in the actual intention of simply buying time until the teacher returned and called them away. Her mother and Damocles had even seemed eager for her to, reassuring her that they did not need her and ushering her out of the room, which was all the more in her favor she supposed.
And really, how could she resist one more opportunity to see them dance for her?
After this, she would be home free. Not like they could do anything to her across international borders even if they did try.
There was no risk to her at this point. So It was worth pushing to see just how far she could milk this.
And these were the best saps a girl could ask for.
The present classmates listened to her tale of woe. Though only a fraction of the crowd she would normally draw and not quite as eager as they used to, they were still listening to her patiently at least instead of simply blowing her off or calling her out. Which meant there was still a chance they would believe her.
A few of them actually seemed to be buying her story. And it had been one of her better tales, in her personal opinion. There were one or two that rolled their eyesâwhich, rude. A couple who seemed disinterested. But most of the rest seemed uncertain.
It was a shame Rose wasnât there. Lila was sure that she would especially appreciate the performance. Though part of her was relieved, since she figured that the emotional girl would probably start crying if she had been.
Though there was also no Marinette either, which meant no one to counter her story as she had no doubt the little Miss Perfect would.
âYouâre really saying that Marinette handed you off to the violent mob?â
That also meant she wasnât there to defend herself either.
Lila hunched her shoulders and brought up a hand to her face in a nervous expression. âItâs not her fault. Iâm sure it was because of the akuma. Even she wouldnât turn on me like that just because she doesnât like meâŚâ
Cry her a river? Sheâd be seeing Marinette cry a river once she was done here. If she accomplished nothing else before she left, she would at least make sure Marinette Dupain-Cheng regretted talking to her like that.
âIâm sure she wouldnât have done it if she was herself.â Mylene reached forward to comfort her but stopped a foot away and immediately decided to back off and keep her hands to herself. She coughed into her hand and looked away.
Lila frowned, scratching her head. What was that about?
She shook it off and kept to her plan. Play up the innocent act and leave them guessing until it was time to go. Whatever happened after that was their problem.
âI was so scared.â Lila whimpered. âHer expression at that time wasâŚterrifying.â
Some more of the classmates looked sympathetic. Yet none of them approached her. Now that Lila noticed, there was a distinct space between her and the rest of the class. No one would come within five feet of her.
She hugged herself, looking the picture of wounded and helpless. âI was just lucky I was able to get away after she outted my hiding place to the mob.â
âLIAR!â
Everyone jumped to see a fuming Alya approach. A somewhat less visibly angry but still no doubt displeased Adrien was right behind her.
Both of them were focused completely on Lila.
Lila gasped, as if hurt. âWhat do youââ
âCan it.â Alya cut her off immediately, not even giving her a chance to spin some new lie. âYou canât be trusted, Lila. Or did you think we would forget about earlier?â
âThat was a misunderstanding.â Lila explained, raising her hands in a peaceful gesture. âYou werenât here, but I had already told everyone what happened and why.â
âOh really?â Alya asked, clearly disbelieving.
âShe said that she was hit by an akuma before the attack today and only snapped out of it after Rose was akumatized.â Alix stated with a droll tone and an expression that said she didnât believe it either.
Alya gave Lila a flat stare. âDo you actually expect us to believe that?âÂ
âItâs the truth.â Lila rested a hand over her heart akin to an oath before curling her fingers and drawing in on herself as if pained. âI was horrified when I woke up and realized what had happened.â
âThen where is the money?â Alya demanded.Â
Lila resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Usually Alya would take her at her word, which was useful when others in turn trusted her for her reporting skills. It worked to her advantage when Alya believed her, but having those skills turned on her was a real pain.
âHawk Moth must have taken it.â She suggested. It couldnât be proven, of course, but it couldnât be disproven either. And this group was particularly gullible and willing to believe the best in anyone regardless of common sense.
Except this time, apparently.
âIf Hawk Moth needed money, we would be seeing akumas robbing banks, not stealing donations from teenagers for a fake charity.â Kim pointed out.
âHe was probably being discreet.â Lila said hastily.
âStealing money from a charity isnât discreet!â Alya shouted, drawing even more attention much to Lilaâs annoyance.
âEveryone already knows you lied and pocketed the money. The very least you could do is admit it.â Adrien said, looking rather cross.
Of all the times for the doormat to actually try to stand up on his own, did it have to be now?
Lila gasped, looking hurt. Internally, she was annoyed more than anything. He was supposed to be passive. Heâd never stood out like this before!
âBut Adrien, you said we were friends, remember?â
It was a reminder of their âdealâ. As well as a thinly veiled threat of what she would have free reign to do if that deal was broken. Not just to Marinette, but to him as well. After all, Adrien knew about Lilaâs lies all along and did nothing. If he was going to out her here, she would be dragging him down with her.
âI said we were friends as long as you didnât hurt anyone I care about!â Adrien corrected her. âAnd you have! You hurt Kagami. You hurt Marinette. And now youâve hurt Rose!â
âWaitâdude! You knew?â Nino asked, looking hurt.
âI knew she was a liar.â Adrien admitted to everyone. He looked down in shame. âI didnât want to say anything because I thoughtâŚâ He paused before shrugging. âWell, I thought a lot of things that were wrong.â
âDude.â Kim muttered.
Ivan gave Adrien a stern glare. âYou owe Rose. Big time.â
âMarinette, too.â Alya added, gesturing to the pig-tailed girl who had approached the group alongside Rose.
âI know.â Adrien nodded and turned to the two, even going so far as to bow lowly from the waist. âAnd Iâll accept any punishment if it means you will all forgive me for not speaking up sooner.â
He knew better now. The absence of overt conflict doesnât mean that the problem is solved. He had thought he was fixing problems, but really, he was only dealing with symptoms.
Rose looked uncertain. She stared at Adrien, biting her lip. She was snapped out of her thoughts by a touch to her shoulder. Looking up in surprise, she saw Marinette and remembered that the other girl had still been beside her. Even now, she was acting as a support.
Marinette patted her on the shoulder and smiled at her reassuringly. âItâs up to you.â
Rose looked back to Adrien.
He hadnât been the one who did it. But he knewâŚif not that Lila was lying, then at least that she was a liar. He knew and he didnât say anything. WhichâŚwell, wasnât AS bad as Lila actually lying, but still bad.
She frowned.
âI want your endorsement on the charity.â
âDone.â
âAnd a cake for the class as an apology.â
âJust tell me what flavor.â
âAnd for you to take Marinette on a date to a fancy restaurant.â
âIâll check my schedâwait, what?â He asked, standing up straight.
Marinette covered Roseâs mouth before she could repeat herself.
âJust the first two will be fine.â She said, flushing with embarrassment. Because really Rose?
Rose, for her part, gave her an annoyed look but didnât fight her. Nor did she attempt to keep up the demand even after Marinette released her.
âAre you sure?â He asked, holding up a hand to her as if in offering. âAfter everything, a nice meal would be the least I could do.â
Then he smiled.
And suddenly, Marinetteâs initial willpower just took a hit.
âItâll be my treat.â He promised.
Marinette felt herself heat up at that. He hadnât seemed to notice the âdateâ part of Roseâs statement, but seemed rather stuck on the idea of getting a dinner together and Marinette knew she shouldnât, but she didnât want to say no eitherâŚ
The classmates were all grinning or sending each other knowing looks. Alya was getting her phone out to record for blackmail future wedding material. Rose was beaming excitedly. They were all glad that some good was coming out of this.
Except, of course, for Lila.
Any cheerful atmosphere or chatter immediately died at the way Lila cleared her throat. Somehow, she just seemed to draw all attention to herself. The others looked to her in question. But Marinette, who knew Lila well enough to know she was plotting something, only felt dread.
âBut is that really appropriate?â Lila asked, innocently. She rubbed at her arm. âAfter all, you wouldnât want Adrien to be leading on Marinette the way he did me.â
The others stared. âWhat?â
Marinette paled.
Oh. Oh, this was going down a bad road, she could feel it.
Adrien glared. âI never led you on, Lila.â
Lila chuckled cheerfully. âOh, Iâm sure it wasnât intentional, of course. But taking a girl out to a fancy dinner wouldâŚwellâŚcertainly imply things. Especially if the girl in question already is enamored with you.â
He blinked.
âWhat?â
âShe holds feelings for you.â
A momentâs pause.
âYou meanâŚas a friend?â He asked.
âŚseriously? Was he not getting it?
âShe is clearly crushing on you.â Lila stated flatly.
Adrien stared.
ââŚWhat?â
Lila sighed in irritation. âWhy else do you think she always freaks out around you? The stammering? The nervous giggling? The weird statements that donât fit the context?â
Marinette pulled at her pigtails in frustration. Because of course. Of-freaking-course Lila would sink this low!
Adrien blinked, then rubbed his chin. âI thought it was because of the way I kept surprising her? Like approaching her from behind. Or appearing behind her locker right as she closes it.â
Nino squinted at his friend. âWhich Iâve been meaning to ask, how do you even do that?â
âNot the point.â Lila cut in before turning back to Adrien. âSeriously, Adrien, didnât you wonder why she had all those posters of you in her room?â
âBecause sheâs a fan. She even told me as much.â He stated.
Lila stared as Adrien beamed at his Very Good Friend. âAnd itâs kind of nice knowing that a fashion designer like Marinette likes what I do. And looks up to my father.â He snapped his fingers in realization. âHey! Maybe I could see if you canât meet my dad sometime!â
Marinette smiled uncertainly and justâŚsort of nodded. âThat sounds nice.â
Because really, what else could she do at this point?
Lila gaped in growing outrage.
WasâŚwas he just going to keep ignoring her? To focus onâŚTHAT?
âWhat? No! Adrien, she is crushing on you! LikeâŚobsessively!â Lila exclaimed.
Adrien seemed to be getting annoyed with Lilaâs continued interruptions, given the look he threw her. âLila, do you really have to keep making things up?â
âIâm not making this up!â
âYeah,â Alix said sarcastically. âJust like the charity.â
âAnd Marinette leaving you to the akuma.â Alya added, still clearly angry about that.
âAnd everything else youâve ever said.â
Lila growled. âBut this is true! And I have proof!â
With a smirk, Lila held out her phone, showing the picture she had taken earlier of the schedule inside Marinetteâs room.
âSee? Marinette has your schedule on her calendar!â She exclaimed.
Adrien frowned at her, disapprovingly. âAre you seriously making things up now just to make Marinette look bad?â
Marinette winced.Â
He was really keeping his word and trying to support her. She knew in this moment that if she denied it, Adrien would believe her. And it may save face and protect her from any further humiliation.
As well as sticking it to Lila, which was always nice.
âŚBut Marinette hated liars. And if there was one thing that this entire mess taught her, it was that great harm could come from lies. She didnât want to give Lila any additional ammunition to use against her, but she knew it would only be worse if it got out later.
And she didnât want to misuse Adrienâs trust in that way.
âActually, I do have your schedule.â She admitted.
Adrien stopped in the middle of the lecture he was about to give Lila. He turned to her in surprise.
âWhat?â
âItâs justâŚyou would mention certain activities or plans. Fencing. Tutoring. Lessons. And I would hear and add them to my calendar so I would be aware when it came to planning things.â
Silence.
Lila smirked in victory. So the goody-two shoes had a fault and was actually admitting to it for the entire class to see. Even Adrienâs protective best friend must be up in arms as he took Lilaâs phone with the picture of the schedule to look it over.
Adrien, for his part, blinked as he registered the information.
âSo youâve kept track of all the events and scheduling Iâve told you about to add to your calendar?â
âYes.â
âOh.â
A longer pause. Marinette mentally kicked herself. Why hadnât she just stayed home and avoided this mess?
Then he smiled. âThat was nice of you.â
âWhat?â Marinette asked, stunned.
âWhat.â Lila less asked than stated. Shrieking even in her disbelief.
âWell, friends keep friends on their schedules.â Adrien said, nodding resolutely.
Lila stared, her eye twitching slightly.
But he paid her no mind, keeping his gaze on his very good friend.
"Can I see it?" He asked her.
Marinette blinked. "What?"
He was actually looking eager now. âThat way I can fill in any gaps so we can choose better times to hang out!â
She flushed. This was not the direction she had expected this to go. And from Lilaâs disgusted expression, neither had she.
Far be it from her to argue. Especially against Adrienâs hopeful puppy eyes.
"Okay."
âGreat! Iâll come by your house later! Maybe we can play Mecha Strike while weâre at it.â He said with a smile thatâgah, too bright! It would probably blind her if it didnât make her heart explode.
Marinette blushed.
âOkay?â She agreed because really, what else could she do at this point?
"WHAT?!" Lila raged, her skin starting to turn red. "Why would you want to help her keep your schedule?! Isn't that creepy?!"
He turned to Lila at that with a frown. âBut...she's my friend. I'm on her Personal Calendar with all the people she considers friends!" And sheâd done this even before their talk today, so that meant she really did like him, right?
Lila rolled her eyes. "Oh come on, Adrien! Who actually does that?"
Adrien shrugged. "Nino does."
A pause. Slowly, all eyes turned to Nino.
The cap-wearing teen realized the sudden attention he'd got and jumped back, waving his hands.
"Well, how else were we supposed to have hangouts with that schedule of his?" He defended before turning his attention to Marinette. âYouâre missing his Chinese lessons by the way.â
Marinette turned to him in surprise. âWhat?â
âYeah, also he has a photoshoot this weekend and in the middle of next week. And I see my schedule on there, too, but you donât have my gig Friday.â
âWaitâyouâre on her schedule, too?â Ivan asked, surprised.
âAll of her friends are.â Nino confirmed.
Kim raised his hand. âAm I on there?â
âAll of her friends are.â Nino repeated, and looked down at the picture of the calendar. âShe has your swim meet for next Tuesday. And a plan to bring some of those tarts you like.â
âSweet!â Kim exclaimed, giving a fist pump.
Nino nodded to Marinette before handing the phone back to Lila. âPlus Alya and I are having a date Sunday, not Saturday, so we won't need you to babysit. Might want to add that.âÂ
Marinette blinked as she justâŚtried to register everything.
âOh. Okay.â
Apparently, that was becoming her default word as she was still trying to process how any of this was happening.
Alya stared at her boyfriend.
âSo wait, you have Adrienâs schedule, too?â
âOf course, I do! Hangouts are difficult enough, but we also need to know what times we can video chat.â Nino shrugged. âHow else do you think I knew when his dad was leaving? And how to get past his bodyguard?â
Lila gaped. She couldnât believe this!
Even the other classmates seemed unbothered. Did they really have no concept of boundaries?
âŚof course they didnât. They were teenagers.
The fact that Lila herself had commonly infringed on Adrienâs boundaries in a physical way on a daily basis and most recently violated Marinetteâs boundaries specifically to find this information to use against her in the first place seemed entirely lost on her.
âYouâve got to be kidding me? How are you okay with this? Are you seriously that stupid?â Lila demanded.
Adrien frowned at Lila, stepping in front of his friends. âMarinette and everyone else here are my friends. Of course, I care about them and would want them to know when Iâm availableââ
âYou canât possibly be that blind! MARINETTE. HAS. A. CRUSH. ON. YOU. She is so hopelessly in love with you that itâs pathetic!â
âDonât talk about her likeââ
âShe has birthday and holiday gifts for you for YEARS!â Lila shouted. âHOW IS THAT NOT WEIRD?!â
The classmates blinked or jumped in surprise before all eyes turned to Marinette.
Why? Why was she Lilaâs go-to target?
âI was justâŚI meanâŚâ She stammered, looking down in shame and embarrassment.
The classmates seemed to be waiting for an answer. It seemed they were at least trying to give her the benefit of the doubt since it was LILA making the accusation, after all, and it was clear by this point that she was simply throwing out anything to make her look bad.
Hesitant, she looked up to see Adrienâs reaction.
And AdrienâŚoh god, he actually had tears in his eyes!
âReally? Is it true?â
Marinette jumped to try and explain.
âIâumâwellâyou seeââ
His eyes widened. âI canât believe it...â
âNo wait! Itâs notââ
Okay, yeah, she was a mess and had nothing.
âYou felt so bad about missing my birthday that youâve been making gifts for me ahead of time so you wonât miss it again!â He exclaimed, looking excited.
Which was okay, apparently, because Adrien had apparently drawn his own conclusions. As evidenced when he pulled her into a hug.
âYou didnât have to do all that, Marinette.â He said, giving her a squeeze. âI donât hold it against you that you forgot my birthday. You didnât know.â
A part of Marinette was screaming. Because oh, the irony. If only he knewâŚ
AlyaâŚout of the corner of her eye, she noticed Alya also looked like she desperately wanted to say something. Probably the truth about his scarf. Which now was a bad time to reveal.
âYou have no reason to feel guilty for not getting me anything.â He told her, releasing her with a smile and patting her shoulders. âBut I appreciate that you felt so strongly about it that you would try to get such a head start to make up for it. It means a lot that you care so much about me.â
MarinetteâŚyeah, Marinette.exe has shut down.
âBut thatâs not...â Mylene started, only to pause for several seconds before frowning with a small wince. âActually yeah, that does sound exactly like something Marinette would do.â
âRemember how she got Alya an interview with Ladybug after she accidentally deleted that video?â Kim chimed in.
Nino slapped his forehead. âOh yeah! Alya went on and on about that for weeks!â
Alyaâeven Alya, her best friend, who knew full well about her crush and the gifts actually looked uncertain at the news. She bit her lip, looking back and forth between Adrien and Marinette in confusion and concern.
Because she remembered that Adrienâs father had somehow wound up with credit for Marinetteâs gift to Adrien. She also remembered how Chloe had broken into Marinetteâs locker and vandalized her gift to Bustier. Then there was the time Marinette made Adrien that hat but didnât take credit for that either.
MarinetteâŚjust seemed to have bad luck when it came to giving people things, apparently.
So was it really any wonder that the girl would become that anxious over gift-giving? Or that Marinette, being Marinette, had gone so far as to prepare a multitude of gifts as backups in case something like her gift being stolen, lost, or vandalized happened again?
Alya...honestly didnât know anymore. Maybe that was something she should try to help with more in the future.
Adrien for his part was simply basking in the glow of happiness that came with knowing how much his good friend Marinette cared about him. Nobody had the heart to argue with him. Nor did any of them even have an argument to make.
âAre you kidding? No one keeps that many gifts for one person in their closet! Can you possibly be that stupid?â
Except Lila, but after everything that had happened, no one was really feeling inclined to humor her.
âSince youâre bringing that up though, hereâs a better question.â Alix cut in, giving Lila a glare. âHow do you even know any of this?â
Lila drew back in surprise as she suddenly found herself the subject of glares from the rest of her classmates.
âI somehow doubt Marinette invited you into her room.â Alix continued.
âHer parents did!â Lila quickly explained, absently scratching at her wrist. âThey invited me inside since the mob was after me.â
Okay, yeah no. Marinetteâs brain had rebooted at that. There was no way she was going to let Lila implicate her parents.
âI already talked to my parents about what happened after I saw you wearing my clothes. They invited you into the bakery.â Marinette corrected angrily. âThey did not invite you into my room.â
âIt was an accident.â Lila claimed. âI had gotten lost, but once I realized where I was and what I was seeing, I just had to warn everyoneââ
ââWhat you were seeingâ,â Marinette cut her off coldly, âshould not have been seen unless you had been looking for them. I kept those gifts in my closet. The schedule was put away. The pictures were not visible from my trap doorâwhich you should have realized right away would NOT lead you to any exit.â
Lila scratched at her neck. âWell, I hardly know anything about you since you keep me at armâs length. Can you blame me for being a little curious?â
âYES.â Came the resounding echo fromâŚwellâŚnearly everyone. It was clear that nobody was buying anything Lila was trying to sell.
âYou donât try to âlearn about someoneâ by breaking into their room, recording what you find there, and sharing it with people!â Mylene ranted.
âIt sounds like youâre trying to make Marinette look bad to distract us from your own actions.â Ivan said with a glare. âBecause none this changes what you did.â
âYou lied to us about the charity and EVERYTHING else youâve ever said!â Alya exclaimed.
âDid you make up all those illnesses, too?â Kim asked, disappointed and disapproval evident in his voice.
âI bet you were the one who nearly caused Marinette to get expelled.â Alix hissed, leading more growls and angry muttering from the audience.
âNo, I havenât! It was just a misunderstanding!â Lila insisted.
âWas it?â Came a voice.
Everyone immediately silenced and all eyes turned to one person.
Rose stood tall. Or at least as tall as she could in such a situation. In truth, she was shaking. Her lip was trembling like she was trying not to cry. And she stared straight at Lila, almost as if she was gazing into her soul.
If it was anyone else, Lila might have been concerned.
But it was Rose. Poor simple Rose who always believed in everyone and would listen to anything she said without question.
Itâd be easy enough to get back in her good graces.
And all it would takeâŚ
Lila sniffled, lowering her head. âIâm sorry.â
Everyone stared.
Marinette wanted to bang her head against something.
Lila rubbed at her eyes to give the illusion of tears. She even managed a couple of hiccups. âYou were just allâŚall so amazing and I was scared about fitting in. I did embellish some things but IâŚI just wanted you all to like me.â She covered her face, effectively hiding her eyes.
âThings just spiraled out of control and before I knew it, I was trapped! I couldnât be honest and I was so scared of what you all would think of me!â She sobbed out.Â
Disregarding, of course, the fact that she had just tried to throw Marinette under the busâand not for the first time.
Lila looked up at the group, eyes watery though no actual tears have been shed. âI never meant to hurt anyone.â She whimpered. âI just admired you all so much! Iâm so sorry!â
They hesitated. Of course they did. They were easily played by emotional appeals. All sheâd ever had to do was fake pain or sadness and they would fall over themselves in response before any true logic or reason could set in.
And of course, Rose of all people stepped forward.
The small blonde rested a hand on her shoulder and looked her in the eyes, with what had to be some form of reassurance on her lips.
Leave it to Rose to forgive any transgressions and be willing to start anew. She was always the first to offer reassurances. The first to believe in someone. The first to support a good cause. If anyone would understand and show sympathy, it would be her.
âI donât believe you.â
ThatâŚwas not it.
Rose stepped back from Lila, her nose scrunched in disgust. She backed away a good couple of feet. She even wiped her hands on her dressâor attempted to, until Mylene handed her some hand wipes. As if touching Lila had been filthy to her.
âIs even touching me that bad?â Lila asked, acting pitiful.
A long pause. Several of the classmates glanced between each other. They all seemed to want to say something, but couldnât seem to bring themselves to.
âYou stink.â
Except for Juleka, who was glaring at Lila.
Lila gaped.
âWhat?â
DidâŚshe mean that literally or was she just being juvenile?
Kim actually pinched his nose. âYeah, I wasnât going to say anything, but you kind of reek.â
Lila clenched her fists, her anger growing and her skin starting to turn red. âHow dare you?!â
"Like...you stink...and you stink. Figuratively and physically." Kim said, sounding nasally with his nose plugged.
âKind of smells wet and musty.â Nino muttered.
âI was thinking it smelled more like a dumpster.â Mylene noted.
âItâs probably her soul.â Alix muttered, shooting Lila a dark glare.
Marinette gasped and spun on Lila. âWait! Lila, didnât you jump in the Seine earlier?â
Lila flushed, embarrassed at the reminder and the realization that her shower earlier had only done the bare minimum for her hair. âIt wasnât by choice!â
The other teens gave Lila disgusted looks.
âYouâŚdo know the Seine isnât the cleanest, right?â Ivan asked.
âIt wasnât my fault!â Lila exclaimed. âIt was that damn Ladybug who splashed me with water!â
Several of the classmates bristled at that and the insult to their cityâs hero.
âShe was putting the pyre out.â Alya countered, looking up the video on her phone. âOtherwise you would have been burned. And then you would have died. And none of this would even be up for discussion right now.â
âReally, you could show a little more appreciation for Ladybug rescuing you.â Adrien said, narrowing his eyes at Lila. âEven if she wasnât your best friend.â
He knew she wasnât. He had been there when Ladybug herself had confronted Lila on her lies, so of course he knew that they werenât friends. Not that anyone else did. But the reminder of that particular lie and Ladybugâs recent threat brought out a level of fear within her that she hadnât experienced before.
She could almost swear that she felt Ladybugâs gaze on her.
Lila silently fumed momentarily but forced herself to calm and steady her nerves.
Remember, she was still the one in control here. Not the school. Not these classmates. And certainly not Ladybug!
She closed her eyes and let out a breath.
Oh well. She gave it a try and it didnât work. An annoyance, but ultimately, no real loss. She was still leaving. And they had nothing they could pin on her.
Rose was the one who collected the money. The school and teachers were the ones who hadnât verified her paperwork. Gabriel had been the one to hire her to spy on his own son. Hawk Moth had been the one to use her. And Ladybug had been the one who didnât protect her.
Really, wasnât it their own fault?
âIf thatâs how you all feel, then Iâll just leave.â Lila said, looking away in a manner she was sure looked dejected. Such a look would normally lead people to feel some pity for her and some remorse for anything they had done.
Here though, it just made her look petulant.
None of the classmates were impressed. Several looked ready to argue. Maybe to even try to brave the stench around her and force her to stay and admit to her acts.
ExceptâŚ
âThe one thing I donât understand though is why did you keep doing it? Why all the lies?â Rose asked.
âYeah,â Alya agreed. âLooking back, your lies were all over the place and didnât amount to much. Not until the fake charity scam, anyway, and you were bound to get caught. What was even the point of it all?â
What was the point? Was she serious? It was everything.
Lila rolled her eyes. âOh please. Like any of you would have really cared about me if you hadnât thought I had something you could use.â
They all just stared at her incredulously.
âUmâŚbut we would have.â
Lila paused, blinking in confusion.
âWhat?â
Rose brought her hands up. âWe would have liked you regardless, Lila! You didnât have to lie!â
âAnd even if you do lie,â Mylene continued, âwe still could have forgiven it and liked you anyway.â
âWe may not have been happy about being lied to, but we could have understood. Maybe even helped.â Ivan stated, rubbing his head.
Marinette stepped forward. âI told you before Lila. We could be friends when you stopped lying.â
Lila stared at her. Was she serious?
That wasâŚ
Lila gaped at them all in disbelief. None of them argued. Many even nodded their heads in agreement.
She couldnât believe itâŚ
That was the dumbest thing sheâd ever heard!
Who actually forgives people for things like that? Even little acts that seemed weird were often enough to turn people off. Even good qualities like leadership, prioritizing, and professionalism could be twisted and used against the person. This was supposed to be a world where any flaw should be enough to ruin someone and warrant raking them over the coals!
And these idiots were justâŚfine with it?
Honestly, it was no wonder she was able to get away with so much! These idiots were practically begging to be manipulated!
Lila forced tears to her eyes. âYou would be willing to forgive me? Just like that?â
âWell, not now, no.â Adrien said, finally speaking up.
Lila stared. BecauseâŚthis was Adrien. Adrien Agreste who was Parisâs Sunshine Child and seemingly incapable of holding a grudge. Or standing up for himself.
AndâŚhe was going to refuse to forgive her?
âI figured your initial claims about knowing famous celebrities was just to make people like you. We could have forgiven you for that.â
His eyes narrowed.
âBut then you used your lies to hurt people. And in ways you had to go well out of the way to do.â
âWhat?! No, I didnâtââ
But he cut her off.
âYou tried to get Marinette expelled. You stole from all of us and made Roseâs charity work into a criminal act. And while weâre at itâŚâ He drawled, making Lila nervous. âMaybe we can discuss how youâve been spying on me for my father?â
Lila tensed briefly before putting on a wounded expression.
âThat was just the akuma making things up!â
âYeah, I spoke with my father about that.â Adrien continued, soundingâŚparticularly cold. âOh, and by the way, youâre fired.â
âFired?â Lila balked. She clenched her fists and her shoulders raised in growing ire. âWhat do you mean âfiredâ?!â
Adrien steepled his fingers together as if he was trying to think. âUm, how else can I say it? Youâre being let go. Your departmentâs being downsized. Youâre part of an outplacement. Weâre going in a different direction. Weâre not picking up your option. Take your pick. Iâve got more.â
She grit her teeth.
Sheâd known from her call with Nathalie earlier that they were firing her. Part of her had believed that it was simply due to Witch Hunterâs control. But if that was the case, they shouldnât remember it now. Though it could be that they remember the initial claim from Witch Hunter that brought them under her influence, but even then, there wouldnât be any proof.
NoâŚthis had to be intentional. Given her suspicions of Gabriel, she had considered that he would cut ties, but to do it like this? Through Adrien? In front of everyone?
Oh. She was going to make him pay.
Outside of Lilaâs thoughts of revenge and misery, the classmates realized something about Adrienâs totally cool and not at all corny or referenced speech.
Kim stared. âDudeâŚdid you really justâŚâ
Nino held up a hand. âLet him have this.â He wiped away a fake tear. âIâm so proud.â
Muffled chuckling from others indicated that they all knew what he had been referencing.
Except for Marinette, who was looking around in confusion. Because sure, Adrien was being cool just then and it was kind of funny to see Lila get some comeuppance, but what was all the snickering for? âWaitâŚwhat was that about?â
Adrien spun on her in shock. âWaitâyouâve never seen Emperorâs New Groove?â
Marinette blinked, uncertain. âUmâŚno?â
He took her hands in his, looking so serious that this had to be a matter of grave importance. âWe must rectify this immediately. Will you come watch the movie with me? Father is being unusually lenient about things to make up for everything with Lila that heâll probably allow a hangout this weekend.â He smiled. âSo would you like to binge watch movies together?â
Oh. Oh, Marinette thought she was over this. But clearly not as she felt her face flush and her heart leap into her throat. Her brain was short circuiting because this wasâŚthis was a date with Adrien? ANOTHER date with Adrien? THREE dates with Adrien? That she hadnât even had to be the one to ask him for? Just what is life right now? Was this life? Was this a dream? Lila finally outted as a liar and Adrien agreeing to spend time with herâŚthis felt like a dream.
At best, she was only able to nod. And Adrienâs smile in response was near blinding. She didnât even notice the way their classmates grinned or gave each other high fives.
âŚor the way Lila was turning red in her growing ire.Â
Lila scratched angrily at her neck. Hard enough to leave marks.
Not only did he fire her, but now he was ignoring her and just flirting right in front of her?! It was bad enough she was revealed and chased around for the past few hours thanks to an akuma. Then betrayed by Hawk Moth. And then threatened by Ladybug. But thisâŚthis was just adding insult to injury by this point!
She wanted to say somethingâanything to break up this delightful little scene and wipe that happy look off their faces.
Sometimes, spite overcame reason.
âOh please!â She shouted, drawing everyoneâs gazes away from the cute scene and back to Lila where she was pointing at Adrien in anger. âThe only reason heâs firing me is because I know heâs Hawk Moth!â
A long pause.
Alya looked at Adrien before turning back to Lila, eyebrow raised. âYou mean Adrien?â
The blond in question paled and drew in on himself. It wasnât true, but what if she brought up some âevidenceâ like his tendency to disappear during akuma fights? Would anyone else believe her? Especially given how heâd messed up before and inadvertently helped Lila to create prime akuma material?
âAdrien isnât Hawk Moth!â Marinette insisted, looking angry, and Adrien felt a combination of relief and admiration for the girl.
âYeah!â Nino agreed, wrapping an arm around Adrienâs shoulders and holding out the other hand in front of them like he was trying to ward off Lila or perhaps her stench. âDonât be talking about my boy like that!â
âWow.â Kim muttered. âYouâve told some bad lies before but that takes the cake.â
âShame on you, Lila!â
Lila reared back in shock at the direction this went. âWhat?! NO! I meant Gabriel Agreste is Hawk Moth!â
But people were justâŚrolling their eyes and looking away from her.
She held her hand to her chest in earnesty. Her other hand went to scratching her side, which kind of spoiled the effect. âHe knows Iâm a threat and heâs trying to discredit me!â
A long pause.
âYouâve already discredited yourself, Lila.â
âYeah, it sounds like youâe just saying anything at this point.â
âSheâs just mad that Mr. Agreste is letting her go.â
âAfter everything she did, I donât blame him.â
âThe guy os a jerk, but come on. Hawk Moth? Really?â
No one was even considering what she had to say now. If it wasnât clear before, it was now.
Lila had lost any credibility.
Several of the classmates were gathered around Adrien, trying to support and comfort him over the accusations. She had a feeling that even if she had irrefutable evidence, they still wouldnât believe it. Not now, anyway. It grated at her, but at this point, there was nothing she could do.
There was nothing she could do and she had just wasted her last trump card to no effect. And if it got back to Gabriel that she had accused himâŚ
All the better to get out now then.
âHey, wait!â Alix shouted as she noticed Lila trying to sneak away. âWeâre not done here!â
Honestly, it was perfect timing that the teacher arrived to start class.
âAll right, class! To your seats!â Bustier said, smiling nicely in her usual fashion.
And it looked like that would be the end of it. With Bustier back, there would be no further pressing of Lila. No retribution. No way to hold her accountable.
Alya for her part tried though. She raised her hand and called out insistently. âWait! Ms. Bustier! Lila has beenââ
Bustier shook her head. âIâm sorry, Alya, but it will have to wait. Weâve missed part of the school day as it is.â She paused and turned to Lila. âOh, Lila! Your mother and the Principal are waiting for you in his office.â
Lila smiled politely. âThank you. Iâll head right there.â
This was it then. A final meeting and she would be out of this school and out of Paris.
âŚthough maybe after she takes a more thorough shower first, she thought to herself as she scratched at her neck.
Still, she couldnât help but send one last smirk back at her now former classmates as she walked away. She hadnât managed to pull them back under her sway, and she couldnât say she had won.
But she could at least find some satisfaction in the growls and shouts of anger as she left them behind.
In the Principalâs office, the adults had aâŚrather interesting conversation of their own once Lila had departed.
âGood heavens! I didnât know how much longer I could stand that smell.â Principal Damocles asked as he opened a window to try and freshen the air.
Amara Rossi took her seat in front of the desk, feeling a bit lightheaded herself. âDid something happen today? Science class? Chemicals, perhaps?â
âIt could have been an akuma attack. We had one just earlier.â He replied.
Her eyes darkened. She was reminded of the constant prolonged akuma attacks that disrupt daily living and the inept superheroes who allowed them to persist. âI see. That will be one thing we will no longer have to worry about once we leave, at least.â
âQuite right.â He agreed kindly as he went to his files to pull out Lilaâs paperwork. âI do hope that Lilaâs new school will be better suited to accommodate all of her illnesses.â
Amara shook her head, uncertain of what she just heard. âI beg your pardon?â
âOf course we did try to adjust to Lilaâs needs as we were made aware of them. Especially with her littleâŚfibbing illness. But it was difficult without official documentation to clarify what she had and the best ways to address them. And we were never able to get clarification during her stay here.â He rested the paperwork on his desk and looked up to make eye contact with Mrs. Rossi. âWe of course are not judging, but it would be prudent for you to make the appropriate arrangements prior to her arrival at her new school, wherever it may be.â He puffed up in pride. âAnd of course we will be more than happy to assist in sending over documentation as wellââ
âNo wait. Hold on.â Amara interrupted him. âWhat needs are you talking about?â
Needless to say, once Lila was out of the room, it didnât take long for them to notice things werenât adding up. And the conversation that followed ended up beingâŚ
âWhat tinnitus?â
Quite informative.
âWhat fall down the stairs?!â
With certain parties being made aware of things they hadnât known previously.
âWHAT LYING DISEASE?!!â
By the end of it, both adults were in shock.
Damocles wiped his forehead with a handkerchief, clearlyâŚunnerved to say the least. âIâŚermâŚtake it that some of these things might have been saidâŚerâŚerroneously?â
Amara covered her face with her left hand, exasperated. âUnless my daughter has been under an akumaâs influence for the past several months the school has been closed.â
He frowned at that, unnerved. âOn that note, Iâve been trying to reach out to you for some time about your daughterâs absences. Have you not gotten my calls?â
âI only received one or two. And Lila warned me not to answer because you were akumatized.â She paused in thought for a moment before lowering her hand and looking to the Principal. âHas the school been closed at all? Lila said you had been akumatized and that the school had been shut down, which was why she had to stay home for so long.â
Damocles blanched at that. âIt was only the once! WellâŚtwice actually, with the attempted mass akumatization during that one incident. But I assure you, madam, that the school was never closed. Certainly not for more than a day at any rate!â
She frowned, unsure. âButâŚthe heroesâŚâ
âAre quite adept at their job for youngsters!â Damocles hurriedly told her. âAkuma battles are normally finished within a couple of hours. Some have lasted overnight at most. There is only one to my knowledge that continued for a few days, but that was a rare exception and the damage was minimal.â Though the harm to Chloeâs mental state couldnât be quantified.
âOhâŚâ She murmured. Wow. While Lilaâs complaints had dampened her view of the cityâs heroes, she had known her coworkers and the city at large seemed to admire them greatly. She regretted that she had never really listened to their gossip about them, but she was grateful she had never spoken up on what she had believed. Otherwise she would likely be a laughing stock at work.
He shook his head. âBut no akuma has lasted for months, I assure you! In fact,â He said, reaching to his monitor and turning it so that they both could see the screen, âthe Ladyblog should have all the facts about the akumas and our heroes!â
Amara observed the blog, curious. It was well made. Perhaps they could get the designer to help update the embassy site.
But on point, the blog listed news reports and updates. Hero sightings. Events. Akuma attacks. And in particular, the most recent attackâŚ
âWait!â She gasped. âIs that Lila?!â
From there, it had been a simple matter of reviewing the footage from the latest akuma attack.
Including the incident where Lila had shoved an innocent girl to the ground in front of the mob. (âThat would be Marinette Dupain-Cheng. A bright student and the Class Representative. ButâŚerâŚshe and Lila havenât quite seen eye to eye and there was anâŚincident a few weeks agoâŚâ)
As well as a compiled list that had been taken of every claim made by the akumaâWitch Hunter? She was apparently a classmate of Lilaâs. And according to the Ladyblog, she had been a victim of Lilaâs lies, which had resulted in her akumatization and targeting of Lila. (âMy word!â)
And worst of all, a video of Lila tied to a pyre and surrounded by a mob of people wanting her to burn. In and of itself, it was horrifying. Especially for any parent to see their child in such a state.
But for LilaâŚit was like she didnât think it was real. Like she didnât think she was in any actual danger. Or she thought this was a game.
And that, Amara found most terrifying.
âThis isâŚâ She muttered in shock. She couldnât even begin to describe it. Her daughter, tied to a pole. About to be lit on fire. All because she had been lying this entire time? Not just lying, but stealing from her peers? Framing people? And she didnât dare say it, but from some of her statements in the video and the akumaâs claims, it almost looked as if she had been working with a known terrorist!
She had known her daughter wasnât perfect or innocent. But this much? To go this far? And for what? She couldnât even begin to understandâŚ
âMadam, IâŚthink this is a most serious matter.â Damocles stated. He was trying to be delicate butâŚwell, really. How can one approach this sort of thing delicately?
âI agree.â She stated, resolutely. âLila has been playing everyone it seems. But now that we know, what should we do from here?â
Damocles stroked his beard as he thought. âI admit we have never had a situation this extreme before. But if you will permit, I believe there may be a way to approach thisâŚâ
The rest of their time was spent discussing the matter at length and coming to an agreement. Damocles admittedly had his failings, particularly when it came to stubborn and selfish students with access to parents in positions of authority and willingness to abuse that authority to get their way. But when he wasnât having to work around such barriers and had parents who were actually working with him instead of obstructing the school regulations, it was substantially easier to make appropriate accommodations and plan accordingly.
Which is what Lila ended up walking in to once she was asked to return to the office.
âIs everything settled?â She asked sweetly, her expression belying her earlier anger. Honestly, her only concern was finishing this as quickly as possible and going home to shower. A good three or four times.
She forced herself to ignore the way the adults in the room turned their heads away from her with upturned noses. She took advantage of the moment and attempted to unobtrusively scratch under her arm. Honestly, this itching was only getting worse! How had she not noticed it earlier?
âWell, Lila.â Damocles coughed as he turned on a fan. âYour mother and I have been discussing things and we couldnât help but notice a few discrepancies.â
Lila froze. She steeled her expression to hide her rising panic. Because no. Not here. Not after everything.
âLilaâŚâ Her mother called, her tone harsh and warning of her slowly boiling anger. âYou told me that the school had been closed. And here I come to find that not only had it still been open and running all this time, but that you had been excusing your absences with claims of trips around the world!â
Shit.
Why had she left them alone?!
âBut there were akuma attacks!â She insisted. âAnd the school was closed!â
âNot for weeks at a time!â Her mother exclaimed, furious. âAnd what is all this Iâm hearing about your actions since you got here? Lying to your teachers? Stealing from a charity? Getting another student expelled?!â
Here, Lila straightened. âShe had been bullying me and I had only been trying to protect myself.â
âThen why did you claim a lying disease to have her brought back?â Damocles questioned.
Lila hugged herself to look sad and sympatheticâand also used the opportunity to scratch at her side again. âI was threatened.â She admitted morosely. âAdrien saidââ
âAdrien? Adrien Agreste?â Her mother interrupted. âYou mean the boy you said was your boyfriend?â
Lila hesitated for a moment before a plan came together and she nodded. âYes. It was why I wanted us to leave Paris. Heâs been harassing me, Mama.â She shuddered and hitched her breath as if in fear. âHe threatened me if I didnât take back the allegations. Heâs been cheating on me with her, Mama!â
âInteresting. Very interesting.â Her mother said in a blithe manner that only made Lila more nervous. âBecause according to this Ladyblog, it sounds like you were the one harassing him. As well as this Marinette girl, regardless of whether she is his girlfriend or not.â
Lila snapped up and gaped at her mother. The woman never bothered with the Ladyblog. Lila had been sure she hadnât known it even existed!
âYou canât trust the Ladyblog! Itâs just a teenagerâs fan site! Itâs nothing but lies!â
Her mother glared down at her. âLike this informative interview of you claiming to be Ladybugâs âbestieâ?â
Lila paled.
âI was only trying to get people to like me and make friends.â She said, lowering her head in shame. Not that she had any, of course, but it paid to look the part at least. âI didnât think anyone would see it.â
âLila, the Ladyblog is extremely popular. Itâs a central news source for anyone in Paris to know what the most recent update is regarding any akuma attack! Anyone would have seen it!â Damocles exclaimed.
âEven if it wasnât,â Her mother continued. âYou still shouldnât have been claiming things like that! What if Hawk Moth saw it and thought it was true? What if he tried to kidnap or hurt you?â
She wasnât worried about that. He wouldnât have harmed her since she was working for him.
Well, Lila realized with a small wince. Not anymore.
âI didnât think it was a big deal.â Lila said, looking away.
âGetting back on point.â Damocles interrupted. âThere is the problem regarding all of the days youâve missed. Your teacher was led to believe that you were out of town while you had informed your mother that the school was closed. This is a serious matter, young lady.â
There was no way to lie that she hadnât done it now that both of them were aware and on to her. But she could still try to reframe things in her favor.
âIâm sorry. I had just needed a break for a while and I didnât know how to tell you.â Lila spoke, tearfully. âIt was justâŚall of the akuma attacks and everything with Adrien and the bullyingâŚit was too much!â
She sobbed into her hands.
âI just couldnât take it! Iâm sorry!â
She continued her sobs for a good minute. Since she had her face covered and her head lowered, she couldnât quite see how the adults in the room were responding. Sneaking a peak got her a glimpse at best lest she risk them seeing her.
Her mother looked drawn. The Principal seemed tired. Neither of them so much as tried to get closer to Lila to comfort her. Though that may very well have been due to the smell, and she cursed Witch Hunter and Ladybug both for causing the situation in the first place and for not fixing this with the Magical Cure as well.
Really, she thought hatefully. This was all their fault. Roseâs. The classâs. Hawk Mothâs. And especially Ladybugâs. She never would have ended up in this position if not for her!
âIâm sorry, Lila. If you were truly having such trouble, then you should have spoken to one of us about it and we may have been able to help you.â Damocles sighed. âIâm afraid thereâs nothing else for it now. Itâs already gone much too far for us to be able to overlook.â
Amara nodded, resigned. âI understand.â
Lila sniffled and raised her head.
âSo I guess Iâll be expelled?â She asked with a mournful tone.
Okay. All right. So she would be sent to another school somewhere. A boarding school perhaps? Some sort of alternative or otherwise stricter school meant to ârehabilitateâ her, no doubt. She could handle this. It was still someplace new where no one would recognize her. It wouldnât take too much before she could just start over. Within two months, no one there would even really know why she had transferred.
She could still make this work for her.
Damocles, however, looked at her in surprise.
âExpel you? What are you talking about? We donât expel students for truancy.â
Lila froze.
âWhat?â
âYou will be suspended for a time.â He continued. âThough I believe given the nature of your actions, it would be better for your suspension to be altered so you remain on campus and under constant supervision.â
Lila stared. She would swear she could hear cracks forming in her reality.
âAnd we will have to keep you in a separate classroom as well to remove any...distractions.â
Crack.
âOf course.â her mother agreed. âIâll be removing her computer and phone for the time being as well. Depending on how things go, we may have to dispose of them altogether.â
Lila felt her eye starting to twitch.
âThis will be an opportunity for you to catch up on all the coursework you missed.â
Crack.
âAnd there will be a hearing as well.â Damocles continued.Â
Lila jumped to her feet and slammed her hand on the desk.
âButâbut you expelled Marinette immediately without a hearing!â
Damocles appeared flustered at that. âMy actions at that time wereâŚadmittedly hasty, especially considering that it turned out they were based on a lie...â He gave her a sharp look at that. âBut given what appeared to be dangerous and escalating behavior at the time, I had only acted in a way to protect the other students in this institution.â
He clasped his hands. âBut less school is not the appropriate answer for a student whose crime was skipping school. Especially in this case given that Lila may very well need to be held back a grade as it is.â
âWhat?!â Lila demanded.
He gave her a dry look, unimpressed with her reaction or the repeated interruptions. âYoung lady, regardless of your reasons, youâve missed months of your precious education. Surely you didnât think you would be able to graduate alongside your classmates. At this point, you wonât be able to get the approval from the conseil de classe to move on to the next grade, much less be prepared for the brevet.â
Lila blinked. âThe what?â
Her mother groaned and covered her face. âItâs the mandated test required in secondary school into get your diploma, Lila.â
Lila gaped, glancing back and forth between the two, as if expecting this to be a joke. âButâŚcollege in France is just scuola media! Itâs middle school! How do they require a diploma?!â
âItâs a national requirement and certification of the knowledge and skills acquired.â Damocles explained, ignoring the way mother and daughter were reacting as he instead puffed out his chest and straightened his jacket. âAnd we here at Francois-Dupont are dedicated to our students and making the appropriate accommodations to help them succeed! Regardless of anyâŚâ
He paused, sending Lila a look. âComplications.â
Amara sighed but faced Damocles. âSo what would you recommend?â
He brightened at that. âThe best answer to get young Lila back on track would be an alternative remedial program in which she can remain in school and make up for what she missed in a setting where she can be more closely monitored to keep something like this from happening again.â
Remain here? In Dupont? With everyone aware of her lies?
âYou canât do this!â Lila shouted. But to no avail as the adults paid her no mind at this point.
âWhat about the fraud?â Her mother asked. âI believe she had solicited funds under false pretenses?â
âOh, that is outside our jurisdiction.â Damocles answered, waving it off. âWe can only deal in school and school-related matters. Fraud is a legal issue, so that will be going to the courts as a separate case. But on that note, I would recommend getting a lawyer.â He said, turning serious.
âHopefully, that wonât be necessary.â Amara replied. âAs we will be making arrangements with the students who started the charity and reimburse the funds Lila took.â
âWHAT?!â
âReturning everything you bought with the money to the stores you purchased them from should be a good place to start,â the woman continued, âassuming they will even accept the exchange once they know what you did. Which you will be telling them if they didnât already know from that akuma.â
âButâŚbut I donât have them!â Lila exclaimed, suddenly realizing that she had worn Marinetteâs clothes back home and left her designer items at the bakery.
âThen you will just have to find some other way to make up the lost funds.â Her mother stated, dismissively.
Lila stomped her foot, the picture of a child throwing a tantrum. âBut thatâs not fair!âÂ
âYou stole money from your classmates, Lila!â Her mother bit out sharply. âGiving back what you took is the very least you could do!â
âBut I canât pay it!â Lila yelled, scratching at her chin in fury.
âThen you can use your now copious amount of free time to take on some extra employment. Because you wonât be sitting around at home doing nothing or getting into more trouble while Iâm not there. And you certainly wonât be going out with your friendsâassuming you have any left after this mess.â
âButâŚwhere am I supposed to find employment?!â
Her mother looked through her tablet and pulled up a number of listings when she then handed to Damocles to print off. âThere are always openings for extra hands. Odd jobs. A part time job. I donât care if itâs something like washing dishes at a diner, you will be doing it. And whatever you earn is going to go to straight into the bank until you pay back every euro you took.â
Lila gasped. âIâm fourteen! Thatâs child labor!â
âThat didnât seem to be an issue when you were modeling for the Gabriel line without telling me.â Her mother countered, growing more furious.
Lila glared back, enraged and for once incapable of speech.
âWhatever you have to say, this is your own fault for stealing the money in the first place. And also using it when you knew it wasnât yours!â The woman shook her head. âHonestly, I donât even understand how you thought that was supposed to work.â
âWe were supposed to be out of Paris already!â Lila muttered darkly.
Unfortunately for her, her mother heard her well enough. âWhich I suspect was the real reason you suddenly wanted to leave, wasnât it?â
Lila stayed silent. Merely sitting petulantly and scratching at her arm.
Her mother looked down at her daughter. She had never seen her like this before. And now that she knew what the girl had been up to, she wondered if she had been blind to the truth. And for how long.
She sighed.
âYou dug yourself into this, Lila. And you wonât be running away from it. You are going to pay back what you took, no matter how long it takes. If this does end up going to court, you are going to agree to any deal they offer and you will make this right. And if you are very very lucky, they will accept your apology and your return of the money, and not pursue harsher charges. Because if they do, you will be accepting those charges and any consequences that come with them.â
Damocles coughed, daring to interrupt. âAm I to presume she will be losing her cellphone and laptop as well?â
âThat would be a given.â Her mother replied. âThough at the rate this is going, I may very well sell those off as well to contribute to her debt.â
âWhat?!â Lila screeched. âBut how am I supposed to do schoolwork then? Or keep in contact?â
âWith pen and paper like everyone else. And you wonât need to worry about contacting anyone since you are going to be grounded for the foreseeable future.â
Lila groaned and sunk further into the office chair. She tried to keep her arms crossed, but couldnât hold it for longer than a couple seconds before she felt the itchiness again and started scratching at her arms once more.
âAnd would you stop scratching yourself?â
âI canât help it!â Lila cried, spilling real tears for once.
The lighting in the office was decent. Adequate to see by, but not quite enough to get a full detail of what they were looking at. In an attempt to help, Damocles turned on his desk lamp and moved it shine on Lila, putting her skin in much clearer display.
And particularly, the red and splotchy areas that were slowly spreading on her body.
âGood heavens!â Damocles shouted as he went to his phone to call the nurse. âThat is an extensive rash, dear girl!â
Her mother grabbed her arm to look closer. âWhat did you do? Take a bath in the Seine?â
âI didnât have a choice! I was being chased!â Lila exclaimed, attempting to pull her arm out of her motherâs hold so as to scratch more.
âThatâŚwould explain the smell.â Damocles noted before the receiver picked up and he quickly turned his attention to requesting the school nurseâs assistance.
âDid you at least wash it off? Didnât you shower when you got home?â Her mother asked, exasperated as she had to keep hold of Lilaâs arm to prevent her from scratching herself.
Lila hunched over. âNo. I had to call you first.â
Her mother groaned in response, much to Lilaâs irritation. She glared up at the woman who should be reassuring her own child in this hardship but instead was merely shaking her head at Lila like this was something she had simply brought upon herself!
How could she?! What sort of mother would be so cruel?
She barely paid any attention when the nurse entered the office with some ointment in hand. She only realized what they were doing when they started to slather the gel on her skin, which felt gross and humiliating. Made all the moreso with the way the nurse and her own mother couldnât fight the looks of disgust at the smell that still covered her. Even Ladybug calling her out in front of Adrien hadnât been so humiliating.
But it would get worse.
Damocles coughed. âWe will resume this discussion another time. Madam, if you are willing, I can arrange a meeting with the students involved and allow you to discuss reparations in an informalâŚnon-court setting.â
âIf you please, that would be preferred. In the meantime, I will be taking Lila home so we can deal with all ofâŚâ She paused, waving her arms around and trying to think of the right words before simply shrugging with a sigh. âThis.â
âWait! I canât go out there! Everyone will see me like this!â
It was perhaps out of some love as a mother, or just some small mercy that had Amara Rossi agree to take her daughter through a roundabout path out of the school. One that allowed Lila to take hallways that were less used and offered less visibility in and out of the classrooms.
And most importantly allowed her to avoid Bustierâs class.
After getting instructions from the school nurse regarding skin care to get rid of the rashes, Amara thanked both Damocles and the nurse before taking Lila outside. The two made it to the front of the school with few being there to witness Lilaâs âwalk of shameâ so to speak. It was probably more than Lila deserved, but her mother was hardly cruel. Tough when she had to be, certainly.
There was now just the final leg of the trip. Amara started down the steps of the school and made it to the bottom before she realized her daughter wasnât following her.
âLila!â She hissed. âGet down here!â
âButâŚâ Lila hesitated, looking up and behind her to where Bustierâs class would have a perfect view of her exit.
âNow, Lila. Or do you still want to be out here when classes are over?â
Lila forced herself to move down the stepsâboth as quickly as possible to try and lessen the amount of time anyone had to see her and as carefully as possible to avoid anything touching the ointment on her skin.
âWhen we get home, the first thing youâll be doing is taking a shower to clean yourself properly this time. We will be going through your room as well and taking back your laptop, your phone, and anything I even think you may have bought with that stolen money.â
Lila grumbled but didnât argue.
âYes, mother.â
At this point, she just prayed no one had seen her.
__________________
They saw her.
âIs that Lila?â
âIt is! And her mom!â
âWhatâs that on Lilaâs arms?â
âOh. Wow.â
Bustier had stepped out of the room for what she said would be a minute while leaving the class with some assignment to do until she returned. Naturally, given the drama of the day, no one was really able to focus on the schoolwork. So instead, they took to quietly chatting with one another. Or in Alyaâs case, nudging Marinette repeatedly as the girl tried to wrap her head around the prospect of having a date with Adrien.
No, THREE dates. Waitâwere they dates? LikeâŚdate-dates?
Fortunately for her own peace of mind, her imagination was put on hold by the exclamations of those near the windows. Helpless to the draw of wanting to know what all the fuss is about, Marinette and the others on her side of the class joined those at the windows to see just what it was about Lila that had grabbed their attention.
And she had to say: Yikes.
âThat has to be the worst rash Iâve ever seen.â
âLooks like that dip in the Seine did not agree with her.â
Marinette winced in sympathy.
As Ladybug, she had a few instances of having to make use of the Seine or the sewers as an exit, so she knew full well how nasty the water could be. The suit and resulting Cure would normally rid her of any of the water or contaminants or so Tikki said, but that didnât stop Marinette from taking a good long shower afterwards. Or three. Just to feel clean afterwards, despite Tikkiâs reassurance.
What happened this time?
She looked down to her purse, but the little clasp remained resolutely closed. Even when she tried to pull at it.
Tikki...what did you do?
âI feel kind of bad.â Rose murmured, resting a hand on the window. âShe only jumped into the Seine because of me. Because I had everyone hunting her.â
âI donât.â Alix replied. âYou were only after her because of what she did.â
Nino nodded in agreement. âYeah. And if the info on the Ladyblog regarding Lilaâs crimes are any indication, she may have been doing it to help Hawk Moth.â
âWe canât prove that, though.â Ivan noted.
Rose hugged herself.
Marinette hugged her as well. âWhether or not Lila deserved it, it happened because of Hawk Moth. Not you. So please donât blame yourself, Rose.â
Adrien came up next to them and rested a hand on Roseâs shoulder. âIf we try to question who is truly at fault, weâll be dragging this out forever. All we can do at this point is try to figure out where to go from here.â
âHey, thatâs right!â Mylene realized. âRose, what are you going to do about the charity?â
Rose looked down. âI donât know. Itâs kind of pointless now since we donât have the money anymore.â
âThat doesnât mean we canât try again.â Nino reassured her.
Adrien nodded in agreement. âPlus Alya and I were talking earlier. If you still have the ledger of the funds, you could try to bring up charges against Lila to get the money returned. My father has some attorneys our company frequently uses for any legal issues. I could see about getting one of them involved to find out how to proceed on this.â
âDude, seriously? Is your dad cool with this?â Nino asked, completely taken aback that the man would do such a thing.
âItâs only the beginning of what he could do to make up for his part in this.â Adrien muttered.
Nino blinked at his friend and hisâŚstrangely dark expression. Then he grinned and slapped Adrien on the back. âGood for you, man!â
âBut what about Lila though?â Ivan asked.
âMurder?â Juleka asked.
Which of course, none of them took seriously.
Right? Right.
âIf Lilaâs momâs attitude is any indication, I donât think Lila will be getting away with the theft.â Kim said, looking out the window in the direction the two ladies left. âShe looked maaaaaaad.â
âShe is angry from what I have heard.â Max said from his seat. He didnât look up from his tablet and was the only one aside from Nathaniel to not move from his desk. âApparently Lila had been lying to her mother and the school about why sheâs been absent for months. And then with the theft on top of that, plus all of the other things revealed thanks to Witch Hunter, I believe there is a 97.3% chance that Lila will be grounded for the foreseeable future.â
âWait. How do you know that?â Kim asked.
âMarkov told me.â
âOh.â
A pause.
âAndâŚhow does HE know thaââ
Max simply disregarded him and turned to Rose. âYou should probably discuss the matter with Lilaâs mother. It sounds like she is taking the issue seriously and would like to meet with you and work this out appropriately.â
âOh. Okay. Thanks.â She said with a smile. Albeit a somewhat wary smile.
âSo there may be a chance to get the money back then?â Ivan asked, hopefully.
âBut waitâwhat about Prince Ali?â Alix realized.
This brought all eyes to Rose, who looked hurt at the reminder of her friend cutting off ties with her.
âRoseâŚâ Marinette started.
She winced. âIâŚstill have his email. I donât know if heâll talk to me, butâŚI can apologize. And I can try to make it right. I thinkâŚâ She took a breath. âI think I understand now why he was so upset. Heâs a Prince and must be used to a lot of people trying to use him.â
She hesitated, looking down.
âLila wasâŚprobably that exact type of person. And she was able to use him through meâeven if she didnât know it.â
The others winced.
Yeah, it was probably a good thing they learned about Lila now before it got too serious. Who knows what would have happened if Lila had ever actually gotten to meet him? Or really any of the other celebrities they actually knew.
Rose bit her lip for a moment, then looked up. âIâve been thinkingâŚif I do get the money backâŚsince the charity Lila had told us about doesnât exist, we canât donate the money as planned. I would like to give the funds to a charity with a similar purposeâI even found one that looks genuine and does a lot of good, butâŚâ She frowned. âThatâs still misleading to the people who originally donated.â
âSo what will you do?â
âI have a log of everyone who donated since I had wanted everyone to get credit or some sort of âThank Youâ for helping. I can try to reach out to them and ask them what they want to do.â She brightened slightly. âAlya is also helping by putting a notice on the Ladyblog about what happened and what weâre doing so that anyone who did donate before can be alerted and know to contact me.â
Alya smiled. âIt seems to be working so far. If anything, Iâve been more messages from people wanting to donate as well.
Mylene gasped in delight. âYou may end up with even more funding for your charity, Rose.â
âJust as long as we make it clear itâs the real deal this time.â Alya agreed. âI posted the charityâs info on the website as well as some links to verification sites so people can check for themselves that itâs real. This way, we donât run into the same problem we had with Lila or get accused of lying ourselves.â
Well, that was a relief. They had a plan and they were certainly taking this seriously.
âIâm glad for you, Rose.â
Rose smiled back. âThank you. I know this doesnât really fix everything, but it feels like the right thing to do.â
âAww!â
The group hug that commenced was just what they all needed.
Tom and Sabine had quite the busy day. Especially with that girl who had come in earlier and snuck into Marinetteâs room.
And the akuma. Though they were at least getting used to daily disruptions caused by those.
âI hope nothing came of it.â Sabine worried as she was finishing putting things away. âIâm sure she was doing something up in Marinetteâs room.â
âIâm sure if anything happened, Marinette could handle it. And if she couldnât, she would let us know.â Tom replied as he headed to the laundry room to put away their used aprons and towels.
There was silence for a bit.
ThenâŚ
âHoney?â
Sabine paused and turned towards her husband. âYes, dear?â
âDid that girl ever come back with Marinetteâs clothes?â
Confused, she started towards the laundry room where her husband was. âNo, why?â
Tom turned to her, with some items in hand. âI think she left her things behind and the Miracle Ladybug Cure didnât send them back.â
Sabine stared. âOh my!â She reached forward. âThese look practically brand new!â
âAnd expensive.â Tom added.
The two looked over the items before looking up at each other. With a nod, they seemed to come to the same conclusion.
âEarly birthday gift for Mari!â
âWeâll take it to Roger.â
âŚnotâŚso same conclusion, evidently.
Sabine gave Tom a flat look. Tom smiled embarrassedly and rubbed his head.
âYes. We can take it to Rodger as part of the case.â He agreed, sheepishly.
Sabine sighed and shook her head.
âThough maybe we can discuss it with the school.â She mused. âSince that girl is a student there. And some of the things on the Ladyblog are a bit concerningâŚâ
âShould we still press charges?â Tom asked, worried. âLetâs wait and speak with Roger tomorrow. And see what Marinette has to add.â Sabine said, taking the items from Tom and placing them in a safety box where they wouldnât be mistaken as common items.
âŚor early birthday gifts.
Taking the Dragon Miraculous back to Fu was easy enough.
Apologizing for beaning him with a pot was less so.
âIt is all right, Marinette. Really.â Fu assured her as he took the box back from her and restored the choker to itâs rightful place. âWith the Miraculous Cure, I no longer have the injury.â
Marinette winced from her seat at the table. âStill, I feel really bad about it.â
He shook his head. âYou did what you had to. The akumaâs influence was widespread by that point and the situation was dire.â
Especially since her kwami and the Guardian himself had both been affected as well.
He wouldnât say heâŚapproved with her methods. Or the headache it had caused him. But it had allowed her to defeat the akuma and restore things in the end. And truly, that was what mattered.
âIt took a lot of strength from you today, Marinette. I am proud of what you accomplished.â He told her as he returned the Miracle Box to its hiding place.
âI just wish I could have helped Rose more.â She murmured.
âYou did everything you could, Marinette!â Tikki insisted.
âIt is difficult, but sometimes there is only so much that can be done, even with the aid of the Miraculous.â Fu returned to his seat at the table. âBut I sense that is not the only thing on your mind today. Am I wrong?â
Marinette gasped. âOh, Master! Thereâs something weâve discovered today. Something really important!â
Tikki gasped. âThatâs right!â
The two nodded to each other and spoke at the same time.
âGabriel Agreste is Hawk Moth!â
âAdrien invited you to see a movie!â
Marinette froze, turning red at the reminder.
Tikki, for her part, blinked at Marinette in confusion.
âWaitâŚyou mean what Lila said earlier?â
âThatâs right.â Marinette said, turning her attention to Fu and away from any distractions of stupidly cute blond boys. âEarlier today, Lila tried to claim that Gabriel Agreste was Hawk Moth.â
Fu frowned. âMarinette, are you sure about this? Lila Rossi was Hawk Mothâs accomplice. As well as an unrepentant liar. This may be a lie as well.â
She shook her head. âI donât think so. Lila tells lies if she thinks theyâll benefit her, but sheâll tell the truth if she thinks it could serve her more.â
Yeah, she knew that much from Lilaâs attempt to sneak into her room and get dirt on her.
But more than that, Hawk Moth had betrayed Lila. After working with him all this time, someone she hadâŚat least trusted she could use if not actually trusted had turned on her. And was even outright going to let the akuma kill her.
If Lila could be so spiteful for this long over Ladybug simply telling someone she had lied about knowing her, she couldnât put it past the girl to not hold some grudge against Hawk Moth as well. And if she thought she knew who he wasâŚ
Well, if all else had failed her, there was no reason at that point not to try to reveal it.
âIt would explain her connection to Gabriel Agreste as well.â Marinette reasoned. âHe was a known recluse for a year before Adrien started school. He would keep Adrien from any events. Refused to let his friends come to visit him or for him to visit them. And wouldnât even let Adrien have a birthday part.â She frowned, tapping her chin.
âSo why would a man like that who is so protective of his son trust some random teenage girl with Adrienâs well being? Especially one he has never met who lied to his staff, forced her way into his home, manipulated his son into a photo op,â Not that she was bitter of course, ââŚand snuck into his personal office?â
Fu frowned, considering her words. âThat is strange.â
âExactly!â Marinette said, pushing closer to the table in earnest. âEven if she didnât know he was Hawk Moth at the start, she still tried to get to him because of his control over Adrien. It was a connection she knew she could use, so it would benefit her. Which is Lilaâs MO.â She said with a roll of her eyes.
She shook her head. âBut this would explain why he would seemingly trust her. If he was Hawk Moth, that means he akumatized her before. Three times, even!â
Fu nodded. âThe powers of the Butterfly would have let him know what she was like. If she was a willing assistant as Witch Hunterâs scroll proclaimed, he would have known.â
Tikki gasped. âIt could also explain the mass akumatization when you had gotten expelled!â
Marinette gripped the table in growing anger. âThey must have planned it! How else would he have known to have it ready?â
âCalm yourself, Marinette.â Fu reached out to place a hand over her own. âThis is a good theory, but you donât want to open yourself to an akuma. Especially not after everything that has already happened today.â
She wilted at that. âYouâre right, Master. Iâm sorry.â
âThat is all right.â He assured her with a kind smile. âIt is healthy to feel emotions, but you cannot let them overcome you.â
âButâŚâ She hesitated. âDo you think Iâm wrong?â
He paused for a moment, thinking it over as he took a sip of tea. âI had suspected once before that whomever had the Grimoire likely had both the missing Miraculous as well. After Gabriel Agreste had been akuamtized, I had wondered as you did whether it was simply coincidence.â
âBecause the Butterfly user canât akumatize himself, can he?â She asked.
He gestured to the tablet containing the translated Grimoire. âNormally, I would say not. But as you have learned, there are ways around any barrier. And as coincidences increase, at some point, we must ask how many coincidences are necessary before something is proven true.â
He smiled. âOne such coincidence may be that he had the lost Grimoire. But another may be how convenient it was that he should be akumatized immediately when anyone may be suspecting him after its loss.â
She frowned, uncertain.
âLet us think on it for now, Marinette. And it will be best if we keep an eye on both Gabriel Agreste and Lila Rossi in the meantime.â
âYes! Thank you, Master Fu!â She nodded before getting up and heading to the door.
âGoodbye, Master! Goodbye, Wayzz!â Tikki chimed before she flew into Marinetteâs purse.
As Marinette walked down the street towards home with Tikki in tow, she continued to think over things. What she had learned. What Master Fu had told her. What she had experienced throughout the day.
âOh!â She gasped as she realized something.
âWhat is it, Marinette?â Tikki asked from within the opening of the purse. They were mostly alone for the moment, so they could afford to speak if they did so quietly.
âSomething Iâd been meaning to ask you.â Marinette told her. âWhat happened with Lila today? The Cure normally fixes things to how they were before the akuma, so why was Lila covered in a full body rash?â
âThe Cure sometimes acts in mysterious ways.â Tikki replied.
Marinette frowned. The answer was obviously vague. And Tikkiâs refusal to meet her gaze indicated she knew more than she was letting on.
âTikkiâŚâ
âOh, look at the time! You should be getting home, Marinette!â
âTIKKI!â
Rose looked over her draft for what had to be the thirtieth time.
Excessive, maybe. But she wanted to make sure she was doing it right.
Ali,
I do not know if you will read this letter, or if it has even been permitted to reach you. At the very least, I am hoping for a chance to tell you from the bottom of my heart:
I am sorry.
While I had never meant to harm you, it doesnât change the fact that you were harmed. And this harm could have been prevented had I been more cautious.
I could come up with any number of reasons as to why I chose to put my trust in the wrong person. The girl I had thought was promoting this charity was my friend. I wanted to believe the best in my friend. But that is no excuse.
If I truly had respect for you as a friend and as your station of Prince, I should have done my due diligence in ensuring the honesty of anyone I trusted. Especially before I tried to encourage you to trust them as well.
You were right. It was foolish of me.
From your perspective, it must have seemed as a sign that I did not take your friendship seriously. And I am deeply ashamed that I ever allowed that impression to anyone, but to you most of all.
If you choose not to forgive me, I understand. But I at least want you to know that I am going to make this right.
I am pursuing legal options against the girl in question. I do not know how much we will be able to see returned, but I fully intent to refund the donations to you and everyone else who had trusted me to do the right thing.
This may not fix anything. And you do not owe me anything from it. But I hope I can at least try to make up for my mistake and be the person you believed me capable of instead of the fool she turned me into.
Thank you for everything,
Rose
She took a breath.
Okay.
This was it then.
Any last words? Any final changes? Any regrets?
âŚno.
She shut her eyes and clicked âsendâ.
And finally exhaled. With the air, she breathed out all of her anxieties, fears, and doubts.
She had done what she could.
She was doing what she can.
That wasâŚthat was all anyone could expect of her.
All that she could expect of herself.
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
That didnât make it not ache though.
But there was nothing for it now, she realized as she turned away from her computer to go to bed.
She wanted to fix things. Desperately so. But she couldnât force Ali to accept her apology and forgive her anymore than she could force Lila to be honest.
Rose curled up under her covers and hugged her pillow close.
It was a small comfort. But one she was going to allow herself.
She hoped for the best. She always did.
But even if he didnâtâŚshe would move forward and continue doing good. Just as he inspired her to.
She justâŚ
A couple tears fell.
She had just wished he would be around to see it.
It would take another hour before she would fall asleep.
âŚ
âŚ
âŚ
It would be another three hours before an email alert came up on her computer.
Ugh.
Lila fell onto her bed, huffing angrily.
This whole day sucked.
She was attacked by an akuma. Everyone turned on her. Hawk Moth was going to let her die. And even when everything was saved, everything was ruined.
Thanks, Rose. Thanks, Hawk Moth. Thanks, Ladybug.
And now she was stuck here in Paris and couldnât even get away from any of it!
She groaned into her pillow. She couldnât be too loud, though, as her mother was being annoyingly alert and âkeeping an eye on herâ now. The last thing she needed was to give her reason to suspect something was up and cause her to come barging into her room.
There was no escape this time. Not now that everyone knew.
Sheâd still have to deal with her class. Even worse, sheâd have to see Adrien and Marinette making eyes at each other.
Sheâd still have to deal with the school. And now that they knew what she did, she wouldnât be getting away with anything again.
Sheâd still have to deal with Hawk Moth, and his akumas would still be a risk for her, as well. She wouldnât put it past him to try to take her out. What little power and control she had was gone now.
And worst of allâŚ
âŚLadybug.
That measly little bug and her damn threat against her. To follow her. To keep an eye on her. To be herâŚspecial friend.
Like she would really do that.
Lila turned over in her sheets, settling into her bed and getting comfortable.
Or trying, at least.
Something felt off. She just didnât know what.
She glanced around her room. It was much more barren now since her mother had cleared out a lot of her belongings. Her laptop and cellphone were gone, as was the limited light they provided in the dark.
She huffed and turned over to face away from the door.
Half asleep, she glanced out the window.
Two glowing blue orbs were staring back.
She screamed.
âNothing important.â
Two blue eyes sent a glare out into the city.
To Dream of an Angel
Part 2 of Dreams of Birds and Angels a series of two one shots written for @pawsitivelymiraculous for the Maribat Valentineâs Day Fic Exchange hosted by @eat0crow!
Part 1 can be found here
***
Damian Al Ghul knew only the bare minimum about soulmates. He had been taught by his instructors in the League that they were a phenomenon that no one quite understood. To the members, they were a hindrance and should be terminated promptly. In respect to their targets, they were used as leverage to get information.
After the young boy turned 8 years of age, he dreamt of her. A small girl with wide blue eyes who would draw dresses in bright colors. The next night, his mother would explain in hushed tones what soulmates really meant. A soulmate is someone who is meant to compliment you perfectly, and once you met them you would never want to let them go. She would whisper to him about the man who helped create him, and how desperately she wished he had been the angel meant just for her.
Angel, he thought with a humorless laugh, what a fine name for the soulmate of the Heir to the Demon.
Every night when Damian would close his eyes, he would be greeted with the sight of his blue-eyed Angel. He would watch as she played with her friends. He would laugh in amusement as she spilled flour all over herself while working in a bakery. He would frown when she was pushed around by a blonde-haired bully.
The girl puzzled the young heir greatly. She was a bizarre sort; always smiling even when being knocked around. No matter how much abuse she took from that blonde trollop, his soulmate was always kind to others and give everything she could to help them, all the while asking nothing in return. It frustrated him to see someone so wholly selfless. Didnât she know that she would be better off trying to profit from her interactions with others?
At the age of 10, Damianâs life rapidly changed. No longer was he revered as the Heir to the League of Assassins. Now, he was in his fatherâs home, fighting against his fatherâs wards for attention, and being told to relearn everything he had ever known to be true. It was frustrating, being so out of his element, but the longer he was Damian Wayne instead of Damian Al Ghul. He realized how skewed his world had once been.
While his mother had tried to soulmates explain differently from the Leagues teachings, he had always seen her words as foolish. It seemed futile to him, her longing for something she couldnât have. However, living in Wayne Manor also allowed the now ex-assassin to see a different side of soulmates. Grayson would often talk about his dreams of his mate Starfire with a dopey grin on his face. Similarly, Drake would mention in passing how his dreams started at an older age due to the elder Superboy having not been created yet.
It was strange, living in a house of people who werenât constantly ready to fight him. His new siblings were perplexing. Grayson was always trying to rope him into some strange âbondingâ activity. With Toddâs return came his aggressive attitude, yet occasional helpfulness. Drake was usually passed out somewhere or so full of caffeine he couldnât even hold a proper conversation. Cain was the most tolerable, having shared similar experiences and understanding the importance of silence.
The biggest influence on his new lifestyle, however, was Alfred Pennyworth. Â His dedication and care for the family was to be admired. The Englishmen had a way with words and always knew just what to say to help Damian through his many sour moods. Most importantly, the butlerâs selfless love for his charges helped the young Wayne to understand his soulmateâs behaviors.
As his world changed, so did his dreams of her. He would see her take her drawing from paper and bring them to life with fabric. He would look on as she made new friends. As well as enemies. If Damian had been able to, he would have fought that sly fox himself, but the smug smile on his face when Angel put her in her place.
What was most jarring to see, was her fighting villains in a red and black spotted suit. Magic had never been something he took kindly to; it having more than once put his and his familyâs lives in danger. After watching countless battles in his visions, and later finding recordings of them online after much research. He could only conclude that the nature of her powers and villains were indeed magic.
It didnât take Damian long to figure out that his soulmate was the Parisian heroine Ladybug. However, this still did not allow him to meet her. At the very beginning of her tenure, Ladybug and the government of Paris had barred all Justice League access to the city, keeping him from getting there using the cover of Robin.
His next plan was to go to Paris as a civilian. However, he could find no way under his familyâs constant hovering to get there. He couldnât use the private jet without getting caught, and him buying a plane ticket would be immediately suspicious. The last thing he wanted was for his family to find out about his blue-eyed soulmate and get involved. While he had come to care for them more than he ever imagined, in some manners they were simple too overbearing for him to deal with.
So, Damian, rather begrudgingly, chose to let fate take its course. After much thought, he realized that his Angel may not even want to meet him. She had spent the early years of their bond watching him act as a bloodthirsty killer. She was most likely appalled. Who would want a soulmate like him anyway?
Now 18, the black-haired boy spent most of his days the same. He would take Titus for walks in the park, help his father and Drake at Wayne Enterprises, and fight back the crime of Gotham in the dead of night.
Damian was on one such walk when Titus suddenly pulled his leash out of the boyâs grasp. The dog went racing down the path and out of sight with a loud bark.
âTitus!â he called, jogging forward to see the Great Dane stopped in front of a woman who had bent down to pet him.
âI apologize, miss,â he said, coming forward and lowering himself to be at the same level as Titus and her. He put his hand on the dogâs head to pet him as well, bumping the womanâs hand slightly.
âHe usually doesnât go running off towards strangersâŚâ he looked from the dog to the woman and trailed off. His eyes widened as his heart skipped a beat. He tried hard to control his reaction. Now that he was up close, he recognized that face. It was the face of his Angel.
The woman, noticing his change in demeanor, looked up at him. When their eyes met, her expression quickly turned to surprise as well. Looking at her now. the blurry image of her that he had known before began to fill in.
He had always been attracted to his mate. Once he had assumed it was simply because the strange magic of soulmates dictated it so. But now, seeing her face to face, she was more beautiful than he had ever imagined. She had a small button-shaped nose. Her blue-black hair that had once been pulled into cute little pigtails was now in one long braid over her shoulder. What drew his attention most was her big round bluebell eyes that were so kind, yet held mysteries that even he, who had seen much of her life from afar, didnât have the answers to.
Damian looked down at his dog who seemed quite smug, almost like he knew who he had brought his owner to. It was then that he noticed the marks. On the back of their hands flew a ladybug being followed by a red-breasted robin.
âMiss?â he called, looking back up at her.
âYes?â she replied. He would never admit it, but his heart melted a bit at the sound of her voice like tinkling bells.
As they made eye contact once again, he made a small gesture towards where their hands sat atop Titusâ head. He swore her eyes couldnât get any wider as she looked from the marks back up to him. âIt appears we are soulmates,â he said plainly as he stood up from the ground, doing his best to appear less shaken than he was. She stood as well. âIt appears so,â She gave him a nervous smile and held her hand out to him. âIâm Marinette,â
The boy hesitated for a moment, having a hard time believing the situation he found himself in was real and not a fantasy.
After a moment he took her hand and shook it. âMy name is Damian,â
âWell, Damian,â she smiled brightly at him. âwould you like to go on a walk and get to know each other?â
He gave her a soft look back. âI certainly would.â
May Photo Challenge!!
Our next photo challenge, #Daisies and Daffodolls, will begin on May 1st! Itâs a creative, for fun, non-competitive daily challenge for you to share pictures of your doll(s). There will be a new prompt each day, listed below to give you a month to prepare, and you can participate in as many or as few days as youâre interested in. There is no judgement whatsoever, so please share regardless of how complex your props are, and donât worry about posting a prompt late.
First of all, thank you so much to @desertdollranchâ for helping with the prompts, especially those surrounding AG birthdays and holidays, and for getting this whole photo challenge thing started back in September! And a huge thank you to @lesbianelizabethcoleâ for designing all 5 banners!
The ground rules are the same as in October and December, but Iâll reiterate them for anyone that might be new. Tag all of your prompt posts with #daisies and daffodolls - all three words, complete with spaces. This will allow us to better find and share each otherâs posts. You can organize your own posts however you want, but I recommend including the dayâs prompt somewhere for context. Also feel free to post on other social medias if you want.
This is not a competition, and there are no prizes, but it should be a lot of fun. Feel free to use any size and brand of doll that you have! American Girl is very popular on doll tumblr, but all other types are welcome as well, including both established (historical or modern) characters and OCs. This could range from 18-inch dolls to Barbies to handmade dolls or porcelain dolls or even paper dolls.
Iâll reblog this post weekly until the beginning of May, and then begin each week of May with the prompt list for that week. Please find a list of all prompts below the cut.
5/1: The first day of each photo challenge is traditionally for seasonal fashion. Does your doll have a favorite spring outfit? Is it cool and light, or are they still bundled in a sweater for the chilly mornings?
5/2: Spring is all about new beginnings. Is your doll learning a new skill or trying a new activity this spring? Or maybe they just met a new person who became important in their life?
5/3: Today is National Textiles Day. Kirstenâs friends gave her a quilt they made after she missed school to help her family. Does your doll have any clothes or other items that are handmade? If not, do they make any textile items themselves? This could be something sewn, knitted, crocheted, or quilted.
5/4: May the 4th be with you! Does your doll like Star Wars? Who is their favorite character? What about other stories? Pick a hero from any movie, show, or book that your doll loves and have them act out a scene as that character.
5/5: Friends are forever. Who are your dollâs closest friends and what do they do together? Maybe they like to play board games or go to the mall or play pretend. Or maybe your doll is planning something special for their friend.
5/6: As the weather gets warmer, itâs the perfect time to head outside. Does your doll play sports, or do they prefer casual games with their friends? Maybe they like picnics or quiet hikes through the woods.
5/7: Happy birthday, Maryellen! Maryellen often feels overlooked in her large family, and she works hard to stand out and show her unique personality. What makes your doll special and unique?
5/8: Itâs career day! What does your doll want to do when they grow up? Show them dressed up for and/or acting out their dream job.
5/9: Happy Motherâs Day! Addy and her mother escaped to freedom together, Carolineâs mother ran a shipyard, and Kirstenâs mother encouraged her not to lose heart. Does your doll have a special bond with their mother? How do they celebrate Motherâs Day? If they donât have a mother or donât have a good relationship with her, consider today a free space to show us something you really want to but that isnât included in these prompts.
5/10:Â Bugs are everywhere! We might avoid some of them, but others are welcomed. Lightning bugs, ladybugs, bumble bees, and dragonflies are a few happy spring bugs. Show your doll doing something bug-themed. They might take a net out to catch bugs or draw a picture of a bug or hold a ladybug they found. Be creative!
5/11: Parties are always fun! Is your doll going to any birthday parties or sleepovers this spring? Maybe theyâre attending a wedding or some other celebration? What are their favorite party activities?
5/12:Â Spring weather can be a relief after the cold and darkness of winter. What is the weather like where your doll is? Foggy? Rainy? Bright and sunny? Show your doll interacting with their local spring weather.
5/13: Everyone needs mentors and heroes. Who does your doll look up to? What have they learned from them or how do they honor them?
5/14: Itâs the last day of the school year. Whatâs your dollâs favorite extracurricular activity or aspect of school that theyâll miss until next fall?
5/15: Happy birthday, Luciana! Luciana loves learning about space and wants to be an astronaut and go to Mars one day. Getting to space involves studying many different things, particularly various fields of science. Show your doll doing something related to space or science.
5/16: Today is National Do Something Nice for your Neighbor Day. What does your doll do that helps others or makes the world a better place?
5/17: Letâs try something different today! If your (OC or non-AG) doll had their own American Girl-style book series, what would be the central theme? What sort of things would happen to them? Show us at least one scene from this hypothetical series.
5/18: Beaches and swimming are iconic activities as the weather gets warmer and people have more free time. Rebecca and her family went to Coney Island for a picnic. Does your doll enjoy picnics, sunbathing, or sandcastles on the beach? Maybe they like to swim for exercise or hang out at the pool with friends? (I do not recommend putting your doll in a public chlorine pool)
5/19: Happy Birthday, Kit! Growing up seeing the effects of the Great Depression on people around her, Kit is determined to report on important things happening to real people. How does your doll relate to current events? Are they involved in activism or spreading awareness? Is there an important social issue that affects them personally or that they feel is very important? Or is there something good happening in the world that they like to think about?
5/20: Spring is a great time for tea parties. Whatâs in your dollâs teacup? Maybe theyâre drinking a fancy tea, or maybe they prefer a refreshing glass of juice.
5/21: Spring is full of baby animals. Show your doll interacting with some sort of baby animal. (Safely! Please donât grab a real squirrel or bunny!)
5/22: In December we celebrated Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day. Iâd like to reprise that, but with a twist: this time, weâre headed into the future! The amount of time and what your doll finds in the future is completely up to you. What do they do while there?
5/23: Cakes and pies and ice cream, oh my! What is your dollâs favorite dessert?
5/24: There may be fewer holidays in spring than in December, but that doesnât mean thereâs nothing to celebrate! Does your doll celebrate Passover or Easter? Or maybe they prefer a more obscure spring holiday to liven things up? Show them participating in whatever celebration you like.
5/25: Yellow is the color of flowers and sunny days and ducklings. Show your doll wearing or using something yellow.
5/26: Happy birthday, Samantha! After her birthday party, Samantha hears Aunt Cornelia speak at a suffragette meeting in New York City. What is a cause that is important to your doll? Show them with a sign supporting or protesting something close to their heart. As an added challenge, use a cause unrelated to the current events prompt.
5/27: Itâs summer vacation! What are some of your dollâs favorite activities now that theyâre free from school? Alternatively, what are some of their favorite hobbies to do anytime?
5/28: Happy birthday, Cecile! For her birthday, Cecileâs brother Armand gave her a beautiful porcelain doll that looked like her. Does your doll have a favorite doll or toy?
5/29: Late spring and early summer is a great time to go on a road trip or vacation. Where is your doll traveling to, and what are they doing there? Or maybe their family chose a staycation this year - what new fun new things are they discovering close to home?
5/30: Today is National Water a Flower Day. Show your doll interacting with flowers or other plants.
5/31: What is your doll planning for this fall? What are they looking forward to when school starts again? Is a big change approaching as the seasons and leaves turn? What does the future hold for them?
I love you (not) - Chapter 15
It's already September and I can't believe this fic isn't finished yet, I swear May was like. Last week.
Anyway, this chapter is full of soft touches because yes, hope you enjoy!
First | Previous | AO3
---
Chapter 15: In which the real pining begins
âHey Chat, itâs LB, I might be a little late for tonightâs patrol, Iâve been running all day and I still have a couple of things I need to take care of⌠Could you maybe get some pastries? Iâm starving, youâll forever be my absolute hero (and of course Iâll pay you back, I just canât swing by a bakery right now). See you in a bit!â
Chat Noir paused as he finished listening to Ladybugâs message, slowly wrapping his head around the fact that she probably wouldnât be the only one arriving late, despite his best efforts at being early. He looked at her profile picture pensively. His partner had absolutely no idea, but even she was trying to get him to do the right thing, namely: sending him to Marinette.
Well, to a bakery, but he knew very well that he wouldnât find it in him to bring anything less than the best pastries in Paris to his Lady, especially if it meant getting a grip and owning up to his actions.
Because yes, he was ashamed of admitting it even to himself, but heâd been a coward ever since the fight against Hostzilla. Heâd avoided Marinette for almost two weeks (as Chat Noir, obviously, although the past few days had seen his guilt increase so much that heâd struggled to even hold her gaze at school), partly because of last minute additions to his schedule, but mostly because heâd gotten cold feet anytime heâd come remotely close to her building.
It was time this stopped and that he bit the bullet. It wasnât like Marinette could easily make the first step; even staying up to scrutinise the skyline would have been fruitless: heâd made some convoluted detours on his way home from patrol to avoid a rerun of the fateful night that had brought them into their fake - no, not fake, complicated  relationship.
Heâd had enough time to mull it all over, and it was clearly time to do something about the situation.
This tiptoeing around the issue ended tonight.
---
The bells jingled quietly as he pushed the bakery door. The warm backlighting and the sweet smell of rising dough welcomed him and made him relax a little, as did the sight of Marinette tiredly stretching behind the counter. He smiled softly. There really was something about this place that made him feel at ease, safe, even.
Marinette straightened up at the sight of Chat Noir awkwardly shuffling near the entrance of the shop, leaning forwards to take a look at one of the displays, and bit back a smug smile at the thought that her plan to lure him in had worked perfectly. His stomach grumbled and she stifled a giggle. The sound was enough to draw his attention; their gazes met, and both felt their cheeks pinken.
âHey, Chat,â Marinette said almost breathlessly after what seemed like a thousand years of just staring into each other's eyes. âLong time no see.â
âYeah, sorry about that.â Even though her tone had been void of any accusation, he scratched the back of his head sheepishly, making her melt slightly. âIâve been pretty busy lately.â It wasnât a complete lie, but he still felt bad about leaving her hanging for so long.
âItâs alright, being a superhero is a full time job, after all." She cleared her throat. "How can I help you today?â She winced imperceptibly at her cowardice. They were the only ones in the bakery, it was stupid to ignore the elephant in the room. Still, she grabbed a paper bag and a pair of tongs, and looked at him expectantly.
âOh, erm, I need pastries. Iâm on snack duty for patrol.â He chuckled nervously.
âAh, well, I can't let our beloved heroes starve, can I? I wouldnât want the responsibility of another Feast on my hands.â She winked.
"Don't remind me.â Chat shuddered at the memory of the sentimonsterâs gooey tongue.
âIs there anything I can get you in particular?â She stifled a giggle at the same image.
âWell, you know me, I canât leave those chouquettes on your hands, it would be a waste.â He eyed the relevant basket hungrily.
âAre you sure you want all of them? This is... 500g, the equivalent of six portions.â
âAnd?â He cocked an eyebrow.
âRight, nevermind.â She shook her head, an amused smile spreading to her lips. âAnything else?â
âHmm, could I have a collection of macarons for Ladybug? Anything but passion fruit, she always gives those to me so Iâm not sure she likes them, and since I already have the chouquettes... I think I'm covered.â
Marinette rolled her eyes as she picked the sweet delicacies for herself. Leave it to Chat to believe that her leaving his favourite macarons aside was because she didnât like them.
âWill that be all?â She cocked her head to the side when she was done packing the box.
âTo ring up, yes.â He paused. âBut I was actually wondering if you purr-haps had time for a quick chat?â
âWith you? Always,â Marinette flashed him a relieved smile as she handed him the pastries and signalled for him to follow her towards the back. She saw he was about to protest, so she added: âIf youâre thinking about paying for this, Iâm pretty sure my parents would cut me off if they found out Iâd sold anything to you or Ladybug, so I'm not risking it. And donât worry, itâs been a slow night so I donât have to stay at the counter - weâll hear if anyone comes in. You said that this was going to be quick, right?â
âI did.â Chat scratched the back of his head nervously as they sat down on the bottom steps of the buildingâs staircase.
There was a pause as the both of them tried to organise their thoughts and put them into words that would lead to a definite, yet delicate rejection. Marinette smoothed the fabric of her apron as she did, while Chat fiddled with the pastry bag.
âSo, the other night, huh?â He awkwardly cleared his throat, wincing at his sudden lack of eloquence. He decided to go for the half-lie route rather than delve straight into their kiss. If he was already this tongue-tied while keeping his thoughts about it at bay, who knew what mentioning it would do. âI couldnât find you at the hotel after the fight⌠Were you hit by the akuma?â
Marinetteâs head shot up and she squinted at him, calculating her next move. Chatâs hypothesis provided good foundations to build on. Maybe heâd even get to the conclusion she wanted him to reach on his own.
âYou can tell me, I promise I wonât be mad.â He smiled softly.
âFine,â she sighed dramatically. âI overheard Hostzilla say she was looking for me just after you left, and I thought I could placate her a little so I went out in the open. She didnât even see me, I got knocked out by a fancy table almost just as I came out of the hotel.â She rolled her eyes, hoping her lie was believable enough.
âMeowch.â Chat winced, before gently cupping her chin and tilting it to either side, trying to assess any remaining damage.
âIâm fine though, donât worry! Ladybugâs cure got me right back on my feet.â She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, then reluctantly pushed Chatâs hand away.
âI knew it wasnât like you not to show up at some point during the fight.â He smiled triumphantly to himself at the thought that his vigilance during the battle hadnât been completely uncalled for. He frowned and cleared his throat before continuing. âBut itâs actually something I wanted to talk to you about. Iâm not entirely sure why you were targeted this time, but Iâm just afraid that if weâŚâ He trailed off, suddenly unsure of what to say next. Theyâd never actually elucidated their relationship status; if they went forward, would they be continuing to date, or just starting? Would Marinette be offended if he used the latter?
âIf we⌠continue on our set course?â Marinette offered.
âYes, exactly, thank you.â He flashed her a quick smile. âIâm afraid that if we continue on our set course, there might be more opportunities for you to get caught up in fights, especially if word about our relationship gets out. I donât want to put you in harmâs way, Marinette, I couldnât bear you getting hurt because of me.â
Marinette was struck by the apparent anguish in her partnerâs eyes as he looked at her. She instinctively reached for his hand.
âAnd I donât want you to have to worry about me. I⌠I got my hands on footage of that battle, and I saw how distracted you were. You already have so much on your mind⌠I wouldnât want to be a burden and put your safety in peril.â
âYou could never be a burden, princess.â He absentmindedly ran his thumb across the back of her hand, but smiled sadly. âBut I suppose youâve reached the same conclusion I did.â
âTaking this relationship further would be a mistake.â She nodded gently.
âIâm sorry, Marinette.â
âWhatever for?â She took a deep breath and smiled bravely. âItâs not your fault. Just⌠Bad timing, I guess. If a hero-civilian relationship was ever supposed to work.â
âYou're probably right.â
Marinette sighed and looked at her watch. âAnyway, you should probably go, Ladybug will wonder what happened to you.â
They both stood up, and walked slowly towards the bakery door. Marinette opened the door for him, but he paused and turned around before heâd crossed the threshold.
âFor the record, I really enjoyed being your boyfriend while it lasted.â He felt his heart rate pick up as the words tumbled out of his mouth.
âIt was really nice.â She smiled gently. Then, feeling a burst of braveness, she took a couple of steps forwards to stand face to face with him.
She stood on her tiptoes before she could process exactly what she was doing and lose her nerve, tenderly kissed his cheek, and took a step back with a soft, if slightly sad, smile. Chat gasped slightly, his hand flying to his cheek. The point of impact of his⌠friend âs lips felt like the epicentre of a wave of warmth, just like it had the last time sheâd pulled something of the sort.
âMaybe we can make it work one day.â She looked down and blushed, rocking on the ball of her feet.
âMaybe one day,â he echoed.
He gave her one last, longing look before taking off into the night, afraid he might throw all caution to the wind if he stayed any longer.
Based on your tags there's apparently a new episode called 'Lies.' Do I even WANT to know what its about?
No, but Iâm here to provide anyway. :â3
(note that the episode takes place at the same time as âTruth,â with Lies as an akuma coming in right after; funnily enough, this means the scene below with Marinette and the kwami literally canât exist in the placement that it is; keep that in mind when you realize what they use the end of the scene for because clearly the priority wasnât on the grimoire, it was to reassure its audience of âsomethingâ)
- The episode opens with Marinette in her room and the kwami flying around, complaining to Tikki about how the grimoire doesnât make any sense (as she apparently does not have the translated version). Tikki insists that itâs normal and that its meanings are hidden on purpose to protect the secret of their powers. Marinette points out that she - a guardian - still canât understand it, and Tikki assures her that sheâll discover the secret soon like Master Fu did; after all, she helped with the aqua power-up. Marinette is now filled with confidence, but gets distracted when the kwami drop an apple on the keyboard, causing the news to pop up on Marinetteâs monitor (how does Marinetteâs computer work at this point anyway???).
- Nadja is talking about Paris celebrating Prince Aliâs birthday, but the kwami who dropped the apple swoop down and retrieve the fruit, stepping on the keyboard a bit more in the process. The news swaps to Alec, who is talking about Aaaaaadrien (there it is) and an exclusive report about his life. Marinette chimes in with Adrienâs name and watches as a couple clips are shown where some reporters apparently followed Adrienâs daily life. Marinette sighs about how amazing Adrienâs life is.
- Cut to Adrien coming home. He sets up his phone up as usual to fake that heâs playing piano, then cheers that heâs finally free and says his transformation phrase, much to Plaggâs dismay as he was about to eat some cheese.
- Chat Noir leaps out of his house and across rooftops until he gets to his apparent designated spot for patrol. He calls Ladybug, but sheâs not picking up due to not being transformed, so it goes to her answering machine. Chat leaves her a message and tells her that heâs there on time âas usual,â then reminds her that itâs time for patrol and asks if she forgot.
- The scene speeds through Chat Noir idling on the rooftop in various positions until he decides to check his baton for new messages. He has none. He lays back and calls Ladybug again but gets no answer, leaving her a message saying that maybe she has âmore important things to do now that sheâs the guardianâ (intentionally using air quotes on that one). He cheers back up to say that âitâs okayâ because heâs the cat for the job and heâll just start patrol without her, adding that heâll âsee her soonâ and to âlet him know.â
- Chat Noir leaps elsewhere and sees some kids shouting his name. He hops down, ready for a fight, but it turns out that they just wanted to take his picture. He checks his baton again, but still no messages. The scene then to Chat Noir idling on a bench in the park between âMister Bananaâ and Xavier Ramier (âMister Pigeonâ). Chat Noir gives some one-sided banter to Mister Banana, then suddenly turns to Xavier and points out that he hasnât been akuamtized for a while. Chat Noir then proceeds to egg on a potential akumatization, asking if Xavier misses being Mister Pigeon and then going on to question if he feels any negative emotions. Xavier thanks Chat Noir for worrying but assures him that heâs in an excellent mood that day. Chat Noir, saddened by this, gets up to leave, and Xavier asks him to say âhelloâ to Ladybug for him. Chat Noir says that he will... âif he sees her one day.â He checks his baton to see that he has no new messages still.
- Cut to Chat Noir idly in a hotel with Chloeâs butler offering him a glass of milk. He asks about Ladybug and points out that she hasnât shown up a lot lately, to which Chat Noir admits that things have been calm. After drinking his glass of milk, Chat Noir hears shouting and looks over to see Chloe arguing with Sabrina about a bag sheâd apparently lost. Sabrina tries to tell Chloe that the bag is still hanging around Chloeâs shoulder, but Chloe cuts Sabrina off and tells her to not to speak to her nor look at her. Chat Noir gets excited at the prospect of an akumatization happening, but Chloe finally notices her bag and gets all happy again. She asks Sabrina why she didnât say anything and Sabrina tries to point out that Chloe forbade her from speaking, but Chloe insinuates that thatâs always the case anyway, again telling Sabrina to hush up. Chat Noir slumps back onto the counter and asks for a larger glass of milk instead.
- Cut to Chat Noir back on a rooftop, having still gotten no messages from Ladybug. Chat Noir calls her and she doesnât pick up, so he leaves her a message and refers to himself as âthe one she stood up,â but cuts himself off when he hears something going on. He peeks over the rooftop to see Kagami fencing with Tomoe. They go back and forth a bit, vagely talking about her becoming better than Adrien, and Kagami assures her mother not to worry because she has what she needs to succeed. Chat Noir smiles and leaves a message for Ladybug that itâs the end of patrol, then leaves.
- Adrien returns home, sad, pulling out his phone and staring sadly at Ladybugâs picture on his lock-screen. Plagg makes an idle comment about âvarietyâ and hovers over Adrienâs picture of the fencing team with him next to Kagami. The scene then cuts to Adrien staring sadly down at two chunks of cheese, one with a red rind and one with a brownish-white rind. Adrien then gets a call from Nathalie informing him that Kagami had called to say that the fencing class schedule had changed again and itâll be an hour early. Adrien brightens a little and thanks her, then ponders to himself what Kagami is hiding.
- Cut to Kagami in her car listening to Tomoe ramble about how the schedule changes the Agrestes âimposedâ are exhausting, then tells Kagami to make the most of it by doing an extra hour of Russian. Kagami agrees and the scene cuts to Adrien listening to Gabriel rambling about how the schedule changes the Tsurugis âimposedâ are exhausting, then tells Adrien to not forget to try on an outfit heâd finished for his next photoshoot, which Adrien agrees to.
- Kagami and Adrien enter school together and Fred Haprele is confused, pointing out that their fencing class starts in one hour and DâArgencourt isnât there yet. Kagami feigns surprise and says that she thought she had the right schedule this time. Fred apologize and starts to say that they canât stay alone in school, but Kagami finishes the sentence for him and then tells him that itâs no problem and theyâll come back in an hour. As Fred turns back around to continue sweeping the school grounds, Adrien asks Kagami what sheâs going to do and Kagami drags him off into the art room.
- Kagami pulls a sketchpad out of her bag and admits that sheâs always been passionate about drawing but never told anyone. She talks about how âart never liesâ and how poses people do reflect their personalities. She flips through a few pages and Adrien is amazing. Kagami solemnly says that her mother doesnât let her draw, thinking sheâs not good enough, but Adrien chimes in that he thinks Kagami is incredibly talented.
- Kagami pulls Adrien onto the raised platform in the artroom and requests that he pose for her, because she wants to draw him. Adrien asks how she wants him to pose and she tells him to pose with whatever he feels comfortable with. Kagami talks about an artist she admires and adds that sheâd liked to draw him like the characters she used to paint, asking idly if Adrien knew that he used to sign his drawings with a Japanese ideogram. She then gets frustrated with her drawing and decides to redo it because itâs ânot Adrien.â Adrien asks to see it, but sheâs already crumpled it up. Skilling tossing the paper in the garbage without looking, she asks him to make a different pose. She states that itâs easy to make beautiful art of him since heâs beautiful, but she wants to draw the real him; who he is inside.
- Adrien tries a few different poses, with Kagami getting progressively more frustrated and telling him to change each time. She points out that theyâre his model poses and reqeusts that he try something more natural. Adrien confidently strikes his Chat Noir transformation pose and Kagami looks unamused. Adrien backpedals and tries to ask what she thinks, but Kagami insists that itâs still not natural. Adrien sadly states that he promises that itâs really him, but Kagami interjects that itâs him when heâs âacting like a clown.â Adrien tries to go on that maybe thatâs the real him, to which Kagami approaches, grabs his hand and puts it to his chest, then starts pressing him against the wall (the shot weirdly has a cut when sheâs pushing him where his hand is back at his side even though both of her hands are on him, so I have no idea what happened). Kagami insists that this is the real him and Adrien asks if sheâs sure, to which Kagami states that she is and that heâs perfect, promptly leaning in for a kiss.
- Their phones then go off, interrupting the one-sided kiss from happening, and Adrien hurried states that itâs actually time for fencing now. Heâs seen smiling on the way out and Kagami as well.
- Cut to fencing practice. At one point, Kagami lifts her helmet to kiss Adrienâs helmet, then Adrien raises his helmet for them to kiss (mutually this time). However, Adrien hears birds and looks over to see Ladybug chasing a flock of clearly-controlled pigeons from beyond the school doors (i.e: Mister Pigeon is back, who Chat Noir had hoped to get akumatized earlier; the one who is now interrupting Marinette and Lukaâs movie date+kiss since âLiesâ takes place at roughly the same time). He makes a quick excuse about forgetting something in the locker room and leaves, though Kagami just smiles at it for now.
- Cut to Chat Noir leaping up a building and seeing Ladybug, at which point we get a reused clip from Truth, so Iâm just going to copy from my episode summary of that:
- Ladybug is listening to a message from Chat Noir that she presumably got earlier, stating that heâs ready for patrol. While sheâs listening, Chat Noir sneaks up and pranks/surprises her, to which she grabs his wrist and yeets him off into the distance. Realizing what she did, she yoyos him back and he slams into the window. She scolds him because she couldâve hurt him and Chat Noir states that âthe only thing that hurts him is when she leaves him alone for patrolsâ and how he âeven missed her angry looks.â She reminds him that sheâs been busy and he says that he knows because sheâs guardian now. Ladybug promises not to forget patrol again and they go off to fight Mister Pigeon.
- The scene cuts away to Adrien rushing to Kagami at Andreâs ice cream stand (Luka has just walked away). Adrien and Kagami are about to enjoy their ice cream when Adrien sees a sentimonster that Ladybug is in the middle of fighting. Adrien tells Kagami that he has to go home because his father must be worried, then rushes off. Kagami stares sadly down at her ice cream.
- The scene cuts to Adrien, Alya, and Nino leaving school while Marinette is riding away with Luka on his bike. Marinette waves good-bye to them and they wave back, but Luka gets a message from Kagami and quickly hurries into his car before reading the message. Kagamiâs car pulls up beside his and they both put their windows down to kiss, but Adrien sees Ladybug chasing an akuma and hurriedly tells Kagami that he forgot something in class, assuring that heâd call her later. Kagami looks upset and tells her driver to drive off.
- The scene then cuts to Kitty Section and Adrien playing together with Kagami, Marinette, and the others watching. They finish and get cheered for, after which Nino approaches Adrien and says that he filmed it all and the concert was great. Adrien rejects the compliment because he missed the intro, but Ivan and Rose reassure him that they can just play again. Kagami interrupts to say that itâs time to go, then shakes her head when Adrien asks for a few more minutes. Adrien promises Nino that heâll do better next time, then walks off with Kagami.
- While going across the gangplank together, Kagami takes Adrienâs hand, which surprises him and causes him to drop his belongings. They pick them up together and smile at each other, but Marinetteâs lucky charm bracelet slips out of Adrienâs pocket when he goes to get up. Kagami sees it as theyâre leaving and picks it up.
- Adrien notices that their rides arenât here yet and laments that they couldâve played one more song. Kagami comments that they at least get to spend more time together, but Adrien tells her not to worry because theyâll have enough time together when they go to Prince Aliâs birthday party. Kagami grabs his hand and corrects that she meant time where itâs only the two off them, then starts talking about how happy she is with him and how she thinks theyâre very similar. However, Adrien sees Ladybug off in the distance and gets distracted, meaning that - when Kagami asks him if he feels the same - heâs not paying attention. Kagami realizes this and turns to look at what Adrien is looking at, but thereâs nothing there. Adrien apologizes and claims that he saw a wasp. Kagami tries again to ask him if he loves her back, but Adrien still isnât paying attention, asking what she was saying. Kagami asks him whatâs the matter and Adrien claims that he lost something on the boat when his bag fell, telling Kagami not to wait for him. Kagmai, disappointed, gets into her car thatâs just arrived and requests to be taken to the town hall.
- Adrien goes in front of a building and lets Plagg come out. Plagg talks about how he hopes theyâre still going to the princeâs birthday since the best cheese is served when there are big ceremonies, but Adrien states that Ladybug needs him right now and transforms. He checks his messages and is told by Ladybug that Hawk Moth merged his powers with the peacock to become Shadow Moth. He then goes to the Liberty, where Truth is there asking Ladybug what her identity is, having already shot Ladybug and captured her under Pharoâs spotlight. Chat Noir cuts in and takes Ladybug into the water with him.
- Meanwhile, Kagami arrives at the town hall, where Andre (the mayor) is wishing Prince Ali a happy brithday. Tomoe reminds Kagami that she agreed with Gabriel that Kagami would come with Adrien and Kagami covers for him, stating that Adrien is answering questions from journalists. Kagami is then seen sitting on the stairs outside, staring sadly at the lucky charm in her hand.
- Cut to nighttime and a reused scene from âTruth:â
- Ladybug and Chat Noir hop up to a roof and Chat comments on how much fun he had. Ladybug describes what just happened and is like if thatâs fun for you then yeah. Chat idles on Shadow Mothâs name and Ladybug shows confidence that theyâll catch him in the end, after which they banter a bit and Chat Noir tells her that itâs âonly with her that he can have so much fun.â
- Adrien returns and tells Kagmai that he hopes he didnât make her wait too long. Kagami, the lucky charm behind her back, says that she hopes that Adrien found what he was looking for. Adrien is confused and Kagami reminds him of what heâd said. Adrien hurriedly states that he found it and thanks her. Kagami asks him what it was and Adrien says that it was a lucky charm that Marinette gave to him, but when he goes to pull it out, realizes that heâd actually lost it. He tries to claim that he lost it âagain,â but Kagami finally pulls out the lucky charm and shows it to him. Dread washes over Adrienâs face as he realizes the lie heâs been caught in.
- Kagami confesses that sheâs lied to, having lied to her mother so they could see each other, even lied that he came with her tonight, and lied during their fencing classes so she can spend more time with him. Hurt, she points out that theyâre both liars, but that the difference is that she lies to be with him and he lies to get away from her. She turns away and opens the town hall door to leave, and when Adrien tries to call out to her, she states that sheâd rather be alone and shuts the door behind her.
- Shadow Moth appears and summons his akuma, sending it out to the sad Kagami. He offers her the power to rid the world of liars in exchange for the miraculouses, to which Kagami agrees. Adrien opens the door just in time to see the new akuma, Lies, and see her start to form an orb of light around her. Adrien shuts the door and lets out Plagg, stating that this is his fault and he has to save Kagami.
- Meanwhile, Jagged Stone is playing for Prince Ali while Penny is trying to stop Fang from eating the cake on the table. Liesâ orb of light then shines through the door, shocking everyone as they step back in fear. Roger pulls out his taser and demands to know whatâs going on, to which Lies asks if heâs ever lied. Roger claims that a policeman never lies, but Lies states that heâs lying and Roger gets engulfed in the light, making him freeze in place. Lies then refers to Tomoe as âMotherâ and asks if sheâs ever lied. Tomoe realizes itâs Kagami and starts to say that she didnât permit her to--then Tomoe gets engulfed and also frozen. The others start to get engulfed as well and Chat Noir enters, almost calling Lies âKagamiâ before catching himself and telling her to stop. Lies comments that Chat is a new candidate for a lie detector test, and Chat Noir tells her that heâs not lying when he tells her that heâll free her from Shadow Moth.
- Jagged chimes in to say that heâll help. Chat tells him to go hide but Jagged insists that he fears nothing. Bob Roth pops into view to say that Jagged lies about his age, at which point Jagged is shocked and tells him that itâs not very rock nâ roll to--then he gets engulfed too.
- Chat Noir escapes through a window and Lies goes on about a world without lies wouldnât need superheroes like Chat Noir. Chat Noir considers Cataclysming the sphere, but Ladybug shows up, yoyoing his hand and stating that touching the phere will paralyze him. Chat Noir tells her that it wonât if youâve never lied, to which Ladybug asks him if he never has. Chat admits that itâs not the case and they back away from the light together. Chat asks if Ladybug has never lied and she tells him that she obviously has because they have to lie at least to keep their identities a secret, adding that if they touch the sphere, nothing will stop it from taking over Paris.
- Ladybug uses Lucky Charm and gets a box with an entire drone inside. She states that they canât go inside, but a drone canât lie so it can. She tells Chat Noir to be a distraction while she sends in the drone, and they take out their earpiece communication devices to keep in touch.
- Chat Noir goes to distact Lies, shouting a bunch of things that clearly arenât true. Ladybug sends her drone inside while Shadow Moth tells Lies to go after Chat Noir and retrieve his miraculous, to which Lies says that she wonât go back on her word and liars always pay for their mistakes.
- Ladybug saw the bracelet and tells Chat that she knows that the akumatized object is. Chat Noir tells her to break it but Ladybug states that she doesnât know how to without touching it. Chat Noir admits that only a person whoâs never lied can enter the sphere and such a person doesnât exist, but Ladybug sees that Fang is still moving and gets an idea, her Lucky Vision highlighting the cake, Fang, and the device sheâs seeing the droneâs vision through. She tells Chat Noir that Fang is an animal, so it doesnât know how to lie. Chat Noir says itâs great thinking and Ladybug uses the drone to pick up each individual slice of cake, using one of the cakes to coax Fang and make him free himself from Pennyâs leash.
- Ladybug lures Fang all across Paris while Chat Noir flees from Liesâ orb of light. Chat Noir climbs up a building and uses his baton to hoist himself even higher, but heâs trapped himself now. Ladybug states that, if Lies sees the drone coming, the plan goes bust, to which Chat Noir says that there are only two liars left in Paris and only one of them can turn her attention. Ladybug immediately catches onto what heâs about to do and tells him not to, asking what theyâll do if sheâs wrong. Chat Noir simply states that he trusts her, letting go of his baton and falling towards the orb of light. Ladybug states that heâs crazy and he simply states that heâs âcrazy for her,â promptly falling into the orb of light. Ladybug laments his unconsciousness and the scene cuts to inside the orb, where Lies finds Chat Noir on the ground. Ladybug urges the drone to hurry and sends it inside the orb of light alongside Fang.
- Lies starts removing Chat Noirâs ring and is halfway there when a slice of cake drops next to her. Sheâs confused and Fang enters, chomping down on the cake and the bracelet in the process. The akuma is freed and Kagami gets de-akumatized, Shadow Moth shouting in dismay at the loss. Ladybug purifies the akuma and casts Miraculous Ladybug, leading to Chat Noir waking up to Fang licking the side of his face. He recoils and Ladybug charges at him, slamming her fists against his chest and yelling at him, stating that he needs to stop doing these sorts of things. Chat Noir boops her and states that, yeah, but he does it because he finds that âangry little poutâ of hers absolutely irresistable. Ladybug squints/glares at him, but is smiling.
- The two fist bump and the scene cuts away to Adrien de-transforming in an alley, leading against a wall and sighing out Ladybugâs name. Plagg states that he understands the romance of it as - even though he loves every type of cheese - he always comes back to his favorite, camembert. Adrien gives Plagg a slice in response and Plagg eats it.
- Cut to the next day, where Kagami and Adrien are fencing. Kagami fences him off the mat and against a pole, getting a little violent in the process, but DâArgencourt cuts in to say that theyâre there for fencing, not solving personal problems. The scene then cuts to Adrien and Kagami in the locker room, where Adrien apologizes for hurting her, but adds that all the good times they shared werenât lies. Kagami states that she knows heâs hiding something, but that thereâs also sincerity in him. Adrien asks if they canât be friends anymore and Kagami cuts in to ask how she could trust someone who lied to her. She gives Adrien back Marinetteâs lucky charm, then picks up her bag, stating that sheâll let him know when sheâs ready to see him again. Adrien stares sadly at the lucky charm in his hand and the scene cuts away to Chat Noir and Ladybug on the rooftops.
- Chat Noir tells Ladybug that the difference between them and the rest of the world is that they canât be completely honest; that they have their secrets and have to lie. They both look solemn at this, then suddenly brighten and turn to each other, stating that they know they can at least trust each other.
- They fist bump and the episode ends.
Sometimes, Luka hated being observant. He hadn't always been like that, but with his mother being so chaotic and his sister being so quiet, Luka had to learn to read people and anticipate their next moves.
Marinette was easy, honestly, and that just made everything worse. She was an open book, constantly wearing her heart on her sleeve. Everything she felt was right there, on display, for all to see.
So why was it that only he could see it?
It was why he was there, standing at the side door of the bakery and knocking gently to make his presence known. He was supposed to check on the Kitty Section merchandise designs that Marinette was sketching, but really, he just wanted to see her. The quality of what she was working on didn't matter to him in that moment, or he would've just asked her to text them to him.
Once Tom had let him in and encouraged Luka to head up the stairs, Luka did exactly that. His footsteps as he went were rhythmic, even though his mind was playing discordant notes.
He knew enough about everything that'd been happening. He knew enough about Kagami and her relationship with Adrien. He knew enough about what'd been going on in Marinette's class from what the rest of Kitty Section had told him. He knew enough about Marinette's work and how much she did.
He knew enough about her being Ladybug. He knew enough about all the effort it must take to balance being a civilian with being Paris' favorite superheroine.
And, as he tapped on the trap door and called out to her, he knew enough about tones to hear the tiredness in her voice when she replied that he could come in.
He entered, seeing her hunched over her table and working as usual. He could see various pieces scattered across the room, all with various degrees of completion.
"...Marinetteâ"
"Oh!" She scrambled, fumbling with the sketchbook she'd been working on as she picked it up. She spun her chair around to face him, her fingers pressing a little too hard against the pages as she presented it to him. "These are some of the designs I've been working on! Um, they're not complete yet, but if there are any problems..."
Luka approached, bending down to get a good look at her sketchbook. They were great designs, as always, but his gaze was still drawn to her uncompleted projects strewn about the room, and he knew that Marinette noticed him being distracted by the way she wiggled in her chair, making it creak just slightly.
"They're amazing, Marinette," he said honestly. He considered what to say next, then settled on, "It looks like you have a lot of projects. Do youâ"
"It's fine!" she interjected. He looked at her and could tell that she knew her response hadn't been natural. "They're all going great and I've got plans for everything!"
She immediately turned back to the table and continued sketching. Luka could only let out a hum of thought, idly glancing at one of her earrings.
She couldn't have plans for everything, he was sure.
"I know Jule said this weekend, but I know you can get busy," he said carefully. "If it's ever too much for you, you don't have toâ"
"No," she cut in curtly. "It'sâit's fine. I can handle it."
He didn't miss the way her voice broke when she said it, and the strained expression on her face gave everything else away.
"I know you can." He quietly wished that he'd brought his guitar. "And if you ever need anything, I'm here for you."
She didn't respond, the silence in the room filled by the scratching of her pencil against the paper. Luka leaned over just a little more, careful not to get into her space but also needing to see her expression.
Something was wrong, as he'd thought. Her eyes were locked to the paper, but her heart wasn't into it. He remembered the sound of her sketching during the two-week preparation to make a video for Bob Roth's contest, and this wasn't it.
Softly, he repeated, "I'm here for you."
She stopped drawing this time, eyes staring blankly ahead before finally darting over to him. She blinked a few too many times to be considered normal, then returned her gaze to her sketchbook.
"Iâ" She swallowed, then exhaled audibly. "I need to finish these."
"For me?" Luka asked.
"No, notâ" She straightened, looking at him and raising a hand like she was about to make a point, but stopped herself. "Not exactly. I know youâI meanâ"
She blushed, but her face was hard to look at. She seemed pained, and Luka had to force himself to maintain eye contact.
She tore her gaze away from him, staring at the wall off to her side. "Never mind."
Except Luka minded. He minded a lot, and he was certain that she'd said something significant just then.
He looked at her sketchbook, riddled with drawings and notes. He looked at the projects around the room, now wondering exactly who they could've been for. He looked at her, noting the awkward posture of someone who'd clearly been working too hard.
Luka thought back to all the interactions he'd ever seen, along with all the interactions he'd ever heard about. He thought back to his own interactions with Marinette, which had often left her with a smile.
He seemed to be an exception of some kind, and his heart ached as he became aware of the implication.
Things had been rougher in the classroom as of late, hadn't they? Heâd heard enough to know.
"Marinette?"
She stiffened, and he waited until she was looking at him again to continue.
He gestured to her sketchbook. "I'm sure they won't hate you, with or without these."
The flicker of shock in her eyes confirmed his suspicion, as much as he didn't want it to. Even as she tried to casually twirl a strand of her hair, he knew what he saw.
"I...I know," she said unconvincingly.
Luka struggled for a moment, torn between a desire to dig deeper and a need to respect her space. He wanted to help her but he feared making her uncomfortable.
"Youâ" He hesitated. "You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to, Marinette, but I meant what I said."
She faltered, looking back down at her sketchbook and chewing her bottom lip. He vaguely wondered if he was selfish for wanting to be the one to help her.
He waited for what felt like a full minute, just to give her time to say anything, but she didn't. Slowly, he lifted his hand from the table, turning and walking away to give her space.
He felt a hand grab his wrist, almost startling him with the sheer suddenness of it. He glanced back, seeing Marinette leaning awkwardly away from her chair just to maintain her grip on him. Her head, however, was lowered, staring down at the floor.
"...Really?" she asked, her voice quiet. "Do you really mean it?"
"Yeah," he answered without hesitation. "I do. If you need someone to talk to about anything, I'm here."
He felt her fingers twitch against his wrist, like she was debating with herself.
She uttered meekly, "Can we sit down?"
She was already sitting, but Luka knew what she meant. He let out a sound of agreement, and she let go of his wrist as they both made their way over to her chaise lounge. Luka sat down first, then watched as she sat next to him. Her expression was as pained as before, but now there was a willingness there; an acknowledgment and acceptance that he was seeing it.
"Luka," she began, hunching over with her elbows on her knees and her fingers steepled in thought. "Do you... how much do you know about love?"
Luka kept his expression neutral. "What kind of love, Marinette?"
"...All kinds," she replied patiently.
Luka hummed, resting his hands on the cushion as he leaned back. "Enough," he answered, staring at the ceiling. "I love my mom. I love my sister. I love my friends." He managed a small smile as he looked at her. "I love the song in my head."
She clasped her hands together, her forehead pressing into her fingers. He couldn't see her face, but knew he hadn't made her uncomfortable.
She knew very well what he'd meant.
"H-how do you know it's real when you get it back?" she asked, a crack in her voice.
Luka leaned forward, copying her hunched position but letting his forearms rest casually on his legs. "Marinette?"
She shook, finally admitting, "I'm a mess. I don't know what's what anymore." She opened her hands, burying her face into her palms and letting out a groan. "I thought I knew everyone and I thought I knew what I wanted, but I don't. With Adrien, Iâ"
She flinched, even choking a bit. Luka, meanwhile, smiled reassuringly. "You can talk about him, Marinette. I don't mind."
He really didn't, and she must've sensed that, given how her shoulders relaxed.
"With Adrien, I was so confused once Kagami showed up, then Lila came back to my class and just made everything worse."
Luka, admittedly, had never met Lila, but he knew enough.
He knew Marinette.
"I thought I had it. I thought I had everything right and everything was great, but..." She shook her head, palms still pressed against her face. "I don't. I'm never sure anymore when people love me. It's either unrequitedâ"
Adrien, Luka was sure.
"âor it's not the kind I wantâ"
He silently presumed it was Chat Noir, but knew he couldn't ask.
"...o-or..."
She sniffled. Slowly, she lowered her hands from her face, and her eyes were shimmering. "or it feels fake. It feels like there are all these rules and requirements and all these things that I don't even know about until they happen."
Luka saddened, wanting nothing more than to hold her. His hands twitched, feeling the need to touch her, but he kept the desire to himself.
She looked at him. "Didâdid I do something? Is that whyâ"
"No," he said quickly. "No, Marinette, of course not. You didn't do anything."
She seemed grateful for his answer, but her frown didn't waver. She hugged herself, only to then look dissatisfied by it. "I just... I want someone to love me. I want to be loved by someone who means it, but I know I'm a wreck and I'm not ready for anything right now and..." She trailed off with a sigh.
Luka stared at her. He couldn't stop staring at her, even when her vulnerability hurt him. Half of his mind was repeating her words in his head while the other half was racing with a million thoughts.
Then, a single thought managed to sing louder than the rest, causing his usual calm demeanor to weaken and his body to go stiff.
No. No, he shouldn't do this.
This was stupid. This was out of line. This was selfish.
The single thought then reminded him that he was the exception in all of this, and he let out a, "M-marinette," almost involuntarily.
She looked at him, and he felt something inside himself crack at the way her song was playing to him.
"I..." He reached a hand out, going slowly to give her each and every opportunity to pull away.
She simply followed his hand with her eyes. When his hand got close enough to one of her own hands, she raised it towards him in an offer. Accepting that as permission, he gently intertwined their fingers.
"If you'd let me... if I'd work," Luka began, pressing his palm to hers, "I'd happily be that someone for you."
Her eyes went wide, but not with the shock of someone who hadn't expected that response.
It was of someone who had hopedâconsideredâbut dismissed the possibility of such a response a long time ago.
It made Luka's resolve all the greater, even when something in his conscience tried to protest.
"L-luka, no, Iâ" She shook her head. "I couldn't. YouâI'd be taking advantage of you. I like you - a lot - but I'm so confused."
"I know," he assured, "but you can be selfish with me, Marinette."
He paused, considering his wording and realizing full well what both of them would be doing.
"...You can be selfish with me."
She opened her mouth to reply, stopped, then simply stared at him with wonder and curiosity that he'd never quite seen on her before.
"Y-youâyou k-know what I meant, right?"
He nodded. He'd agreed wholeheartedly, and she knew that.
She used her free hand to slide herself closer to him. "And you know what that means?"
He nodded again. There'd be no strings attached, and he knew that.
Her face came closer to his as if she was testing him. Searching his eyes for any doubt or hesitance, she asked in a hushed whisper, "A-and you're okay with that?"
He nodded once more, with all possible conviction he had. They'd both be doing something selfish, and they knew that.
Luka leaned in, just enough to give her a sign of encouragement. She breathed up, eyes half-lidded, then copied him by leaning in as well.
Her lips met his, and any reluctance that Luka had was washed away by the eager noise that Marinette made as soon as he kissed her back. She pressed against him, her hand clutching his hand tighter as her other hand went to grasp his shoulder.
Luka shifted for comfort, making it all the easier for Marinette to climb onto his lap. He reached his arm around her, his free hand resting against her back. At his touch, she let out another sound, this one surprised and elated.
Somehow, this girl who had all the friends in the world, who had the adoration of almost everyone in Paris, who knew multiple celebrities who'd praised her...
She was affection-starved. She didn't want adoration, mindless attention, or even praise for her projects.
She wanted to be touched. She wanted to be comforted.
She wanted to be loved.
Marinette held the kiss for a precious moment longer, then pulled away, though she didn't look like she'd wanted too. Luka took in the sparkle in her eyes and the overload of emotion written all across her face.
He smiled, feeling overwhelmed himself. "You're beautiful, Marinette."
She gaped at him, blushing pink, and he giggled at how she was still surprised by his compliments after he'd just made out with her.
Then, she gave him a smile in return, he felt his heart jump at just how warm it was.
His face felt warm too, actually.
Marinette leaned closer, letting go of his hand to wrap both arms around his neck. She glanced at him for permission, then gave him a tight hug and buried her face into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her in response, keeping the embrace gentle but loving.
He was in this now alongside her, and he was not going to let her misconstrue how he felt about her, even for a second.
Cat Crossing Chapter 2
As bad as it was to accidentally reveal his identity to one of his friends, Adrien was sure he could smooth things over somehow. After all, who could possibly be smoother than him?
I posted this on Ao3 a few days ago, but completely forgot to post it here too! I wrote Cat Crossing last year for @sweetsweetsweetieâs birthday and decided to give the much-demanded second chapter as this yearâs present.
You can find the first chapter here for some Animal Crossing, Marichat goodness. Read on to see Marinette being a super flirt, and Adrien being completely unable to handle it.
Enjoy!
-----
Adrien had a fitful nightâs sleep after he panic-disconnected from Animal Crossing. He wasnât entirely sure if doing that would damage his save file or not, but he just couldnât bring himself to worry about that right now.
No, there was a much more serious, pressing issue at the moment - Marinette Dupain-Cheng, a civilian, had discovered his identity through her clever deductive skills and through not fault of his own. At least, that was how heâd phrase it to Ladybug. Hopefully she believed him. Because otherwiseâŚ? Well, he was going to be in trouble.
âSo, whatâs the plan, big cat?â Plagg asked, sounding far too chipper about all this, with his wide grin and the amused gleam in his eyes. Adrien would have thought that his kwami would have been the more scared of the two of them, but there was no time to question that now.
Especially since his kwami had asked him that same question last night after Adrien had explained just how badly heâd messed up - and just who had discovered his true identity. All he could say then was that heâd sleep on it and something would come to him in the morning.
Well, the morning was here and as he stepped off the limo dropping him off at school, he had absolutely nothing to show for it. The only bright side is that he was here early enough that he could still hash things out with Plagg before classes started. With that intent in mind, Adrien rushed inside and made a beeline for the empty lockers.
âOkayâŚâ Adrien ran his fingers through his hair, trying his best to keep cool and stay optimistic. âWell, at least it was her and not some random person, right?â
Plaggâs grin only grew. âOh yeah, definitely. Probably the best person you could have accidentally revealed yourself to.â
âRightâŚâ Adrien gave Plagg a suspicious glance. âWe know Marinette. Sheâs shy, sheâs a good friend, sheâs honest. She wouldnât intentionally reveal my identity, right?â
âOh, I donât know,â Plagg pretended to inspect his paws. âShe places a real high value on honesty, kid. And sheâs best pals with the one and only Ladyblogger - a fact you know only all too well.â
âYes, and-â
âCuz you stare at pictures of Ladybug on there all the time.â
âNot all the time-â
Plagg shrugged. âEh, close enough. But back to pigtails - whatâs the plan?â
âWell, we know sheâs shy, right? So what if I really ramp up the Chat Noir charm on her? And while sheâs still trying to get her bearings I tell her how important it is to keep identities secret and everything.â
Adrien nodded slowly to himself, feeling the framework of a plan coming together. A few zingers and flirty lines started forming in his head. âThat should buy us enough time until we see Ladybug again. I bet sheâll know what to do.â
It was at that moment Adrien closed the locker door and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw that Marinette was oh so casually leaning up against the locker beside him.
âI didnât catch that last part,â she said, a knowing smirk on her face. âWho will know what to do? Or, even better, just who were you talking to?â
âI⌠umâŚâ Adrien swallowed, confronted with Marinette leaning toward him, arms behind her back and a look of serene curiosity on her face, but with an insidious glee in her eyes. âJust my...â
Her voice was just barely above a whisper as she spoke into his ear. â...Kwami, maybe?â
All the gears in Adrienâs head ground to a halt and in the face of her⌠well, face, which was little more than a handâs breadth away from his own. Coming up with coherent thoughts was just about impossible and all he could do was go, âUhhhhâŚâ
âI thought so.â Her smirk returned. âSee you in class!â
With a wink that did things to his heart, Marinette walked away, her hands still held behind her back. Adrien was frozen in place, staring at the spot she had been in as the sound of her humming faded off into the distance.
For a moment, he wondered about how she knew about kwamis. But memories of Multimouse soon surfaced in his mind and he realized just how doomed he was. After all, if Ladybug had chosen her, she had to be good.
Adrien swallowed heavily, but his mouth was dry. This was going to be a long, long day. And he no longer had any grasp on the situation whatsoever.
----------------------
Where was the girl that stuttered in front of him every single day? Because she certainly wasnât behind him in class that day. It couldnât be, not by the way he could constantly feel her eyes on his back, and how she kept passing him notes. Adrien hadnât had a moment to pull himself together since their little talk in front of the lockers.
Even during class, she found a way to keep him on the back foot, he reflected as another slip of paper found its way in front of him. The one before it had simply been a flirty cat pun, which he wasnât sure was supposed to be an actual flirt or just teasing him. Taking a steadying breath, he opened up this one to see what it had to say.
Inside was a quick drawing of what had to be him - green eyes, blonde hair, his white jacket with the black shirt - with a speech bubble that just said, âmeow meow meow meow meow.â
He quickly hide the drawing under his notebook, just in time since Ms Bustier turned back around at just that moment to address the class. If she saw, would she confiscate them? Or, even worse, would she make them read them out loud in class? Besides being embarrassing to have to say âmeowâ five times outloud, would they give his classmates the edge they needed to discover his secret identity? Who else but a catboy would be able to say meow so effectively?
Ms Bustier turned back toward the white board and his momentary reprieve ended. Another note - this one folded into an American football - landed at his elbow. Ignoring the questioning look Nino was sending his way, Adrien opened it.
This one was just a drawing of a cat⌠a cat that unmistakably had his hair.
Adrien quickly shoved it into his pocket but no sooner had he managed that than another one landed right in front of him. Keeping an eye on Ms Bustier all the while, he felt it open with his hands and glanced down once he thought heâd gotten it.
Another drawing of him. This time with the words âpretty kittyâ and an arrow pointing at him.
That one got him to turn around, just enough to look at her. She looked back down at him, shameless, and even had the audacity to wave her fingers at him.
âAdrien, eyes up front please!â
He snapped back to attention at Ms Bustierâs gentle but firm command. There was a slight murmuring in the classroom, but it passed just as quickly as it began. After a couple minutes, Â another note landed in front of Adrien.
Unheard by anyone else, Adrien let out a long, frazzled sigh.
--------------
Adrien collapsed onto his bed, finally home from a long day. Gym class and an hour of fencing didnât do nearly half as much as just having Marinette behind him, flirting with him surreptitiously for the entire time they had classes together. And it was unquestionably flirting - eventually even he had no choice but to admit that she was hitting on him.
But why? He had to wonder. Was it because of her feelings for Chat Noir? Had something happened to awaken this in her from their time on her island last night?
Shaking his head, he decided heâd have to ask her tomorrowâŚ
...Only for his phone to go off.
Naturally, it was Marinette, a fact he noted with wide eyes and quickening pulse.
Marinette: Open your island?
Adrien stared at that message for long minutes before it finally dawned on him that she was talking about his Animal Crossing island. After everything that had happened today, he had almost completely forgotten how his identity had been compromised.
His internal debate on whether or not to actually do what she asked was short. In a matter of minutes, he had his switch in his hands and was opening up his airport. His only response was to send her the access code.
He ran in circles as he patiently waited for her to arrive. The plane loading screen came up and he frowned at her passport title. âRascally Bug Fanâ? He could have sworn that wasnât what it had been a few days agoâŚ
Then she landed and the cutscene played, showing her character walking out of the airport gates. But she wasn't in the clothes that she had been wearing when he visited her island yesterday. No, she was wearing a red, black spotted suit, a superhero mask, and with a rose in her hair.
Everything clicked and he let out an involuntary gasp that turned into an undignified, startled squawk as his fingers slackened and his switch fell onto his face. He quickly rolled to a sitting position and watched Marinette - or, should he say Ladybug? - walk up to where he was standing.
He used the anger react and she responded with a laugh. Remembering the day that she had put him through, he felt the corners of his mouth twitch up in a smile. He had his character use the love react, a pink heart floating above his head.
She smacked him with a net.
Side note: Tikki and Plagg being the ones who created the Lazarus pits is my favourite bit of Maribat crossover lore.Â
Marinette had only known Jason for about a year, ever since that day he commissioned her for a new suit and leather jacket design. Â She had seen news reports about the Red Hood, but she had never seen him in person ever since she came to Gotham. Â That was until he visited her just as she was getting ready to close up shop. Â Marinette needed to know why her mysterious client was asking her to work with a great big bolt of Kevlar. Â It seemed like a challenging task for the young boutique owner. Â It wasnât necessarily being used for nefarious purposes. He was a crimefighter, one of many that tried to keep Gotham safe. Â Tikki felt like there was something strange about him, but she couldnât quite put their finger on why.
She didnât think sheâd ever see him again, until one night when there was a loud banging on the boutique door.  Marinette was about to say something about people having no manners when she saw a redhead in a red suit and a green capâŚwith someoneâs arm slung over his shoulder.  Marinette rushed to the front door to find the Red Hood, with his helmet cracked to reveal a part of his face.  She could make out some matted dark hair and a red domino mask around his eye.  âPlease, do you think he can lay low in here for a while? At least until we can get him fixed up,â the redhead asked, âwe canât take him to the hospitalâ.  Marinette looked around before hurrying them inside.
She got to know more about Jason, the person behind the red mask. Â Thereâs only so much you can hide from a person after they end up cleaning and stitching your wounds in their apartment. Â He told her that he slept on the streets of Gotham before being taken in by Batman when he was 13. Â He told her that, when he was 15, he went on a journey to find his birth mother and he was never the same since. Â Jason would say that the old him died that day. Â Marinette assumed he meant that he was so drastically changed by the experience, that he was unrecognizable from his old self. Â Still, she got to know the person he was in that moment, and that was what mattered. Â The two became close and started dating shortly after, and Marinette told him that she had been a superhero since she was 13. Â Marinette remembered seeing a worried look on his face, before assuring him that she was up against very different villains from what he was used to in Gotham. Â Marinette wondered if he was worried that she could have ended up like him?
Marinette knew that there was a roguish charm to him, possibly a remnant of the young boy he described from his past. Â She would occasionally help him as Ladybug, and he became impressed with her quick thinking in a fight. Â Marinette told him about the time she got a rocket launcher as a lucky charm and discarded it because she only needed the targeting laser. Â She was certain that she saw a tear in his eye at that moment. Â Marinette also knew he was someone who cared about those close to him, a group of people who now included her. Â She got the chance to meet the rest of his adopted family, that is when he wasnât at odds with them. Â Dick reminded her far too much of Chat Noir, Damian was a lot colder and more standoffish, Tim told her heâs like that with everyone. Â Though he wouldnât admit it, Marinette knew Jason would put his life on the line for his adopted brothers. Â She came to know Roy as the more optimistic of their dynamic duo, but that didnât mean he wasnât battling demons of his own. Â As the year went on, Marinette went from being unsure about him, to feeling safe and warm with him by her side. Â Even Tikki came to see that whoever this person was, he made their Guardian happy, and that was what mattered most.
Today, however, Marinette had been worried sick.  Jason had left for a mission in a rush, barely able to say goodbye.  That was days ago, he had not answered any of her messages or her calls.  She paced around the apartment in a panic, âwhy isnât he answering? Is he hurt? Captured? Worse yetâŚdead?â She slapped her cheeks, trying to snap out of it. Â
âJasonâs strong, he can handle it.  If heâs in trouble, Iâm sure Dick or Tim would help him.  If heâs really in trouble, Bruce would certainly help him,â Tikki assured her as Marinette paced around the room. Â
Marinette decided to take a trip to Wayne Manor, having some of Alfredâs baking would calm them both and she could ask him about Jasonâs whereabouts. Â Ladybug sets off to Wayne Manor, changing back before she arrives at the front gate. Â When she arrives in the kitchen, she is greeted by Alfred wearing an apron. "Welcome Miss Dupain-Cheng, you're just in time. I'm doing the finishing touches on the ginger biscuits. Why don't you take a seat while they cool?"
Marinette smiles at Alfred, Â she could smell the biscuits from the front door. "Thanks, Alfred, I came to ask about Jason. I havenât heard from him in a while,â she asked.
Alfred scratched his chin, "Master Todd? It would be best to ask Master Bruce then if it's related to work. He is currently asleep and should wake up in an hour or two"
âThanks, Alfred, mind if I have a few biscuits to go then? I'd like to have a walk in the gardens, " she asked.
Alfred nodded and handed the biscuits to her in a paper bag.Â
Marinette took a stroll around Wayne Manor, walking past Damian drawing something, whilst a large dog was curled around him. Â She came across the private Wayne cemetery at the very edge of the estate. She was drawn in by the Gothic architecture and design of the area. Curious about the history of the Wayne family, she tentatively wandered into the graveyard. Â She saw the graves of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Everyone knew the story of how Bruce watched in horror as they were killed in Crime Alley.Â
She froze in shock as she saw one grave in particular, tears began forming in her eyes. âHere Lies Jason Peter Todd: Gone But Not Forgottenâ in large bold letters. Â She felt her heart breaking, many questions raced through her mind. Â How did he die? Why didnât anyone tell her? Did no one at least think to invite her to the funeral? Â She was too stunned to move, Tikki floated down to take a close look. Â Before she could utterly break down in tears, she heard a voice behind her.
âHey, Pixie Popâ Marinette whipped around to see Jason standing before her. Â He was casually eating a chilli dog, acting as if standing in front of his gravestone was the most natural thing in the world. Â Marinette didnât know if she should feel happy, distraught or furious. Â At first, she slammed into him, hugging him tightly. Â âHey, Pixie, did you miss me that much?â He was about to return her hug, and maybe finish eating the chilli dog over her shoulder, when she softly pounded her fists into his chest.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â She asked, her fists punctuating her words, Jason was trying to make sense of what she meant. Â He had told her that he had died before, or at least tried to. Â Even he didnât like to talk about it, the events leading up to it and how he was brought back. Â Eventually, she stopped, and just curled into him with tears streaming down her face. Â Right now, the last thing she needed was dumb jokes as he held her close to him.Â
âIâm sorry, Iâ Jason tried to explain, only to be interrupted by Tikki.
âMarinette,â Tikki called, Marinette looked back at the gravestone to see the date written on the tombstone. Â The year was 7 years ago when Jason was around 15.
She turned back to Jason âso when you said that your old self diedâŚâ, Tikki finally realised why she always felt there was something strange about him.  The Lazarus pits, the result of a wish that she and Plagg were forced to grant long ago.  Tikki could sense her magic on him, and a faint hint of Plaggâs magic that would consume him if left unchecked.  In the time heâd known Marinette, he had managed to keep it under control, for her sake.
âSo what happened? These last few days I mean,â she asked as she pulled away, wiping her tears on her sleeves before crossing her arms.
âI was gonna call you, Roy and I were in Paris fighting killer mimes when one of them fried my phone,â he explained. Â âI tried to get you something to eat from your parentsâ bakery on the last day we were there, your parents said âhiâ by the wayâ, he told her.Â
âThen what happened?â she asked, he wasnât holding any paper bags or boxes with their logo on them.
âRoy ate them all is what happened, right after his little talk with Killer Croc,â he told her.
âSo why didnât you just drop by for a visit when you came back?â she asked.
âWe tried to, but Roy was craving chilli dogs and I was just ready to crash,â he replied.  The look on Marinetteâs face told him that if he didnât do something, he might be back in that grave a lot sooner than he thought.  âLook, Iâll make it up to you, starting with taking you to that little craft store you loveâŚâ he suggested, the corner of her mouth pulled into a slight smile.  âIâll buy you as much silk, satin and tulle as you want. Paid for with money we got from kicking killer mime assâ, he promised.Â
âYou mean Iâll get a chance to sew something that isnât Kevlar, leather or your flesh? Who are you and what have you done with the real Jason?â She asked jokingly. Â As the two of them walked away, Jason wrapped his arm around her. Â He glanced back at his tombstone, that boy had been gone for quite some time now. Â Right now, he was just trying to be a better man.
