#i wanted to talk about it a bit

okay i like the individual frames of the blink animation i did too much to not post them by themselves. i like the closed eye frame i made it look peaceful on purpose. even tho you only see it for a single frame

animating is fun. im gonna show my frames timeline and layers bc i wanna show what it looks like. and also one frame i didnt put up in the set bc it was redundant and also. square layout looks nicer

so i used clip studio paint to animate but i dont have ex. i want ex for the sake of animating now. but i dont so i only have 24 frames to work with. its EXTREMELY limited. to get more time i worked in 8fps. 24fps with 24frames is much too fast. the gif would be a single second. i wanted it to be longer bc im showing his eyes shift

heres my layers. i merged all the nonmoving parts of the image to simplify my animation timeline. the og drawing had. way too many layers. more than you think

if you noticed. theres actually two closed eye frames. i technically couldve reused the closed frame from above but it looked odd. it was bc of the position of the line. the smallest difference makes a difference man.

this is the frame. its Slightly different bc to me it was necessary

the "closed quick" frame is at frame 12. the second blink when he looks at the camera. its a single frame. shits lasts a moment. learning how to animate is interesting bc you realize 1) you draw so much. and 2) you actually draw less than you think. this is about inbetween frames. in betweens makes things smoother sure. but it also slows the movement down. so the half blink frame isnt used every time the eye opens or closes. i only used that frame twice

im just learning how to animate for the record. going largely by feeling things out. this is my first blink animation tho and its fairly simply but i wanted to ramble about it just because. bc i never shut up really lol

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

once again thinking about jason as duke’s robin. he’s ~4 years younger than jason, and that puts him at 8-12 during Jason’s time as robin. that’s prime time to get attached to your local kid vigilante before your own life goes downhill.

and if we try to keep duke’s meeting with bruce in zero year + duke’s age (so he can remember the meeting and hold that conversation with bruce), he has to be around 8. if he starts following batman through the news at that time because of the mess that just happened, the robin he sees is probably jason. I’ve literally connected the dots

Kageyama's backstory only being revealed near the very end of the series is really interesting from a meta perspective.

For reference, his chapter is 387 out of 402. That's 96% of the way in.

To contrast, other characters like Tsukishima and Yamaguchi's backstories are shown in Chapters 87-88.

Now, we do get the explanation for his "King of the Court" title in Chapter 6, at the start of the series, but we don't see how he got to that point, or why he started playing volleyball in the first place like Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's stories show.

It creates this situation where, despite being the deuteragonist, the character our protagonist, Hinata, is practically glued to the entire series, we barely know anything about him.

We don't even know he has a sister until that point whereas other characters' siblings like Natsu, Saeko, Akiteru, Alisa have all made appearances way before then. Even Oikawa's sister, though we don't see her, we at least know she exists because of Takeru.

He's both closed off to us (the audience) as well as the other characters in the series, and this results in them finding him rude or disliking his character in general (see: the "Kageyama is abusive" discourse that somehow keeps popping up even now).

Chapter 387 takes place in 2018 and was published in 2020 so it takes him 6 years of in-universe time and 8 years of irl time to really open up.

And the catalyst for all of this is Hinata fulfilling his promise of beating him.

You see, another thing to note is that, whenever Hinata thinks of Kageyama, he's always looking at him from behind.

His internal image of him is someone who's always up ahead, someone he needs to catch up to, meaning Hinata can only see one side of him, he cannot see all of Kageyama until he catches up and passes him.

Which he finally does here.

In this shot Hinata is finally the one who's looking back at Kageyama. At this moment, Hinata (and by extension the audience) can see him for all he is, can see how he was just a lonely boy who's been waiting for someone to meet him where he is, to keep running alongside him and not quit the race.

Someone he doesn't have to go easy on. Someone who would actually tell him to hurry up instead of slow down for a change.

His someone better.

but ghost has been betrayed before. he knows the way this ends; either with him six feet under or his enemy

he doesn't hesitate

it's only when they knock alejandro out that soap shoots; when they spill the first blood and cross a line they can never come back from

only when ghost orders him to run and he has to cover his retreat

and somewhere along the line, between civilians’ screams and taunting voices, between his shaking breath and ghost steady in his ear, that naivety is stripped away; his trust turned to teeth that he uses to sink into throats of men he'd have given his life for
