idk it just keeps on happening and its starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth as someone who watches the french creators like 70% of the time. first it was always being forgotten scheduling wise, then it was being left out of lore for a bit, then it was being forgotten in videos (see: election dinner) and most recently its promos again and again. ik most of the time its taken as a joke and is taken light heartedly but the more it happens the more it sits badly with me :/

there are three songs that are PERFECT for a Spy Tf2 animation but they're all in french and one of them is fast pace joual french and I'm afraid that nobody will enjoy or watch bc its in french... and if they do enjoy and watch and they speak french, then they will barely be to understand the third one.... my current plan is to translate all of them and include some kind of animated typography into the animations themselves so that they can be enjoyed by both french and english speakers....

Also my drawing tablet is broken finally after 6 years of use, so I'll need to get a new one anyways. And with the way I procrastinate on even getting my bank card working, it's gonna be a while yet.

basically the themes are:

Spy and his meticulous analytical existence and his malleable sense of self; song title is Mètre de mon ètre (master of my self) which is a double entendre because mètre means master and also meter, as in the measurement. The song's repeating gimmick is the theme of measurement, and how one must open part of an enclosed space, often intimate, in order to change.

Spy and his clone. The song title is L'homme qui me ressemble (the man who ressembles me). The song tells a story about waking up and meeting a clone of yourself, and how offputting of a situation that is. I dont quite know how I'll pull this one off lore-wise, because tf2's canon lore about the RED and BLU teams is very ambiguous, but I'll figure it out.

The third one is my personal favourite, and it's the joual one. For the uninitiated, joual is essentially the dialect of french spoken in Québec, Canada, and, consequentionally, in the surrounding provinces. The best comparison I can think of is, like, Joual is like the australian accent of french. Anyways. So, the song title is Tsé quand ça va ben (Normal french: tu sais, quand ça va bien) (english: You know, when things go well) and it's so incredibly good. It opens up with a violin and guitar and its so. So good. The idea bouncing around in my head is Practical Espionage domestic fluff. The song talks about two lovers waking up slowly in the morning and being able to enjoy eachothers' company. It's so good, I cannot even begin to adequately translate it into english agh

Hi, i hope you dont mind this ask, but i noticed that in your bio post you mention you speak 4 languages and are learning 2 more, and thats honestly so cool and inspiring!! Do you happen to have any language learning tips you used so far that you like? Im in the process of learning french as my 3rd language and while i have the structural knowledge of how to learn a language, i have hit somewhat of a wall in my learning process rn i think. So while i know language learning varies a lot from person to person id still apreciate knowing other peoples process if youd be okay with sharing :] hope youre having a nice timezone

hi! i definitely don't mind, glad to hear you're learning a new language :D big reminder at the top that i'm just some a guy who's way too into languages and linguistics. you want to ask me about jewish theology on the concept of knowing, go right ahead, but in terms of language pedagogy, this is just my personal experience from learning a lot of languages and spending a lot of time thinking about this stuff, though i do have some experience in education. take everything i say with the grain of salt of my personal context!

my initial tips kind of revolve around your goals; do you want to get generally better at the language, or are you specifically looking to strengthen certain areas? if its the former, i recommend doing anything and everything, but most of all practicing, and practicing with french speakers (or speakers of whatever language you may be learning). it might be embarrassing, especially if you're trying to speak with native speakers, but it is hands down the best way to learn, and it means you get very hands-on practice.

if you want to strengthen certain areas, it can depend on which, and it can also depend on your learning styles and what works best for you. for a couple examples: if you want to improve pronunciation, flash cards can be really helpful, and i know quizlet has ways of including pronunciation. if flashcards aren't your thing, i recommend listening to native speakers (i.e. youtube videos, podcasts, etc. etc.) and repeating after them to try to get down their pronunciation, and i recommend a variety of them so you pick up on how pronunciation varies by accent and region. another example: if you want to improve comprehension/listening ability, again, i recommend listening to native speakers and getting the hang of what theyre saying; this is particularly helpful if you can watch something with subtitles in the language as well in your own native language(s) so you can pick up on exactly what they're saying. i do this sometimes when i'm watching cellbit-- instead of putting stream captions on english, i put them in portuguese so that i can see what he's saying along with hearing it. this works well for me though bc i read pretty well in most languages i speak/am learning and i already speak spanish, which makes reading portuguese very easy. again, it depends on your own learning styles and what works for you, so find something that really clicks with your brain and run with it. and this goes for any goal you might have-- if it's being able to read books in french, you can practice reading kids' books and move up to something more advanced; if it's translation specifically, you'll want to look a bit into translation studies and look at professional and amateur translations to see how it's typically done.

there's also the context of the language itself-- yiddish literature is a HUGE part of yiddishism, and translation is also a really important factor for a lot of people, so we read a lot of books and poems and did full translations of texts as practice, but for some languages, there's far more emphasis on song, oral storytelling, writing, or any number of things. if you've previously focused on some elements while learning other languages, it can be strange to switch to something new with another language, but it really helps round out your understanding of the diversity of languages and how cultural context has an impact on it all.

my big big big tip is to practice as much as possible and, if you think you're plateauing at kind of an intermediate-advanced level, that's very normal. every language i've studied, you reach a point where you have a pretty decent grasp on a lot of technical things, but you still don't necessarily feel super confident in the language. i recommend studying new vocab, as that will make you feel more like you can speak it at any opportunity, and engaging in media in the language, like i said above. when i got into advanced yiddish, we read and practiced and had conversations constantly, and it helped me gain a lot of confidence that i was able to open a text and know a lot of what was being said, including vocab, without having to reach for a dictionary all the time or ponder exactly which auxiliary verb was being used, or to be able to express myself really clearly to my peers.

i think it's easy to feel railroaded after you've got a lot of grammar and structure down, so you need to find new ways to gain knowledge and confidence in the language so you don't get stuck at that level. also find a crew to speak french with!! i wouldn't have learned yiddish nearly as well as i did if i hadn't had friends in my classes and built connections in the yiddish community at large, and i think that's a really meaningful way to engage with a language. language is about human connection, so finding ways to build that really does help. and don't forget to review!! you will, if you're like me, get caught up in some element of the language and then may misremember some basics, so it's always good to review those and keep up with anything that might start to slip your memory.

one last thing! if you learned another language as a kid or a teen and now you're learning as an adult and finding its not quite as easy, this is also really normal. kids' brains are so, so good at absorbing information, particularly languages, and it's very normal to get into your twenties and thirties and be like "why can't i learn this as fast as i could as a kid?!" the easiest time to learn a language is as young as possible, but you are not late to the game or slow. you just came at it at a different time, and you're still going to be able to pick it up. especially if you're trying to learn in between other classes and work and just general adult life, it's just going to be a bit harder, and that's okay! for thousands and thousands of years people have been learning new languages at every age and you are not alone in that. may we all have a decent time at it, and best of luck to you. bonne chance!

Yeah our words are weird like who decided that a banana would be "UNE banane"??? My take is that you just learn the pronouns of the words by living your life and earring people talk about these words, but there is no logic to just guess if it's "un" or "une" 😭

In school students often laugh saying that to guess a Spanish word, you have to take a French one and add "o" or "a" at the end (so students often make up words if they don't know the translation lmao)

But for us it's also much more difficult than in English for the gender neutral pronoun ; since in English everything is genderless, you can say "they are tired"

In French, you would say,

for a masculine pronoun : il est fatigué

for a feminine pronoun : elle est fatiguée

so for a gender neutral pronoun : iel est fatigué.e

it's called "inclusive writing"! As you can guess old people and far-right ppl are totally against, saying it's denaturing our language and bla bla bla but in fact, my teachers use it a lot in email to address a big group of students and include everyone like " à tous les étudiant.e.s". Bc we have a dumb rule that we learn in primary school that "masculine win over feminine" (le masculin l'emporte sur le féminin) meaning that if you have 10 girls and only 1 guy, you still have to say "ils" in plural. So with that it's easier to include everyone in written form !

And ive noticed a phenomenon of masc even being considered "gender neutral", because to kind of neutrally address someone you COULD address them in the plural form, but problem is we also have gendered plural lol. So usually the masc one is used to kind of make the person "gender neutral". Its hard....

Hi Miki!!! Was wondering how did you learn english? I'm gonna start working on spanish soon and I'm trying to think what would be best for how to get a basic knowledge of words and stuff because I don't know much

HII TIA!!! ohh in my case i learned a good part of my english just going to classes. english is like the compulsory second language in almost all schools here so i remember starting learning my very first words when i was just like. three years old lol. apart from the lessons i had every year at school my parents also made me attend a lot of extracurricular english classes growing up and i even went a couple of months during summer to the uk where i spent the time living with a family there and so i had no other option than to read and talk in english all the time and it helped a lot too

but ig this isnt very useful to you so thinking of something that can help you in an easier way and that has helped me a lot too was reading a lot and watching shows in english! i was always very lazy to start reading books in english ngl but when i started with fics i had no other option so i slowly began doing it and tbh it took me a while to get really used to it, bc even if i already had a good english level there were still words and expressions typically used in writing that i had never come around just yet. i was slow at first, looking words on the dictionary from time to time, but i really felt like it helped me lots to get better and it still does. and not only fics. unironically reading posts here on tumblr also helps a lot bc it makes me read in english every day and so i can easily maintain my level and even improve it. for the tv shows, i found that watching cartoons especifically helped me a lot since i hear the voices clearer than in other shows and even if you dont know that well the language i feel like this helps. ive done this not only with english but also with french, which im by no means as fluent as im with english but even if i didnt understand every single word i think it helped me quite a lot!

however its true that for what i said abt the reading and the tv shows you need at least some basic level on the language and since you said you dont know much.... mmmm i remember that back in school we used to read some thin books during english classes that were basically adaptations of other actual books (like one i remember was frankestein for example) but with simplified language and they were available for each level you had so something like that might help ! idk if it would be possible to find them online for free but i dont think itd be very expensive to buy one or two if you want to

Louis thinks he’s cursed to have his True Name corrupted, turning him into a mindless, bloodthirsty monster; then he saves his…friends? adoptive siblings? people he likes from someone who has been cursed like that, who they were trying to save (they failed), and then he did contract the curse. And he wanted his adoptive brother to mercy-kill him, but he couldn’t.

That’s depressing. (TV Tropes makes it sound like all of this was backstory? I hope it’s not spoilers.)

If I was careful with what I said, I could paint two very different pictures of Louis. He’s snarky, insensitive, sometimes cruel, reluctant to admit mistakes; on top of that, he acts cold and aloof, to the point of cutting his hand to show how little he cares. But he does care; he hates seeing people suffer, he loves his people-he-likes, he works to ensure they’re happy.

The overall collage I see from this is a good kid who no longer sees hope or joy in his own life. All he thinks he can do is make things better for his people-he-likes when he leaves, and part of how he tries to do that is by hiding these negative feelings. Trying to act like things are normal.

That’s depression. (Well, maybe not, I haven’t watched Vanitas yet, but it sounds like depression.)

Theyre amazing books but its probably for like 12-14 years olds so dont expect a horror book

old guard au. old guard au

immortal bastards baby!!!

if you haven’t seen the old guard don’t worry this is basically an immortal foxes au

neil is 25 when he gets caught by his father. is tortured and killed.

then neil comes back to life :)

he doesn’t really understand what he is yet, but he’s pumped up on adrenaline and basically got the gist lol

his father doesn’t notice that he’s come back to life and that his injuries are gone

(because neil may be alive and healing slowly, but he is still in a very poorly lit basement, covered in blood, staying completely still, controlling his breathing)

as soon as his father unties him to dispose of the body, neil kills him, lola, and the rest.

he runs. full to the Brim with adrenaline and sheer glee.

the rest of the gang have a dream/vision of the moment neil died (this is how some of them found each other, by having a vision of a new persons moment of resurrection)

neil doesn’t know about any of the others (due to him being new) and ran away from the scene of the crime bc he has no idea what to do. his first priority is to somehow get new clothes? he doesn’t know. it’s been less than an hour. he’s trying very hard not to freak out.

the foxes (and jean) are split into 3 groups!

1 dan, matt, allison, seth and katelyn

2 andrew nicky and aaron

3 renee kevin and jean

-

(renee’s the eldest, dan and matt are second, then allison, seth and nicky, then andrew aaron and katelyn. the newest are jean and kevin (they happened like 2 weeks ago) and lastly there’s neil)

each of the groups know that the others exist, but haven’t met (i mean how often do you see someone in a dream for a split second and know where to go?) (also andrew isn’t interested in the rest of the foxes, other than renee)

renee knows all of the foxes and used to be part of dan’s group but is currently only keeping contact with andrew bc of a. disagreement 

dan doesn’t know much about andrew’s group, the only thing she got out of renee was that they Really weren’t interested in them.

jean and kevin don’t know any of the rest, only renee. the three are on their way to meet andrews group.

kevin and jean found out they were immortal at the same time.

dan’s group had a vote and the majority voted against two new additions, so renee separated from them and immediately went for the boys by herself, letting andrew know she was after new guys.

the plan was for andrew and renee to meet up after she retrieved kevin and jean, which was like 2 weeks ago

guess how jean and kevin found out they were immortal. together. at the same time :)

SO the foxes see a vision of neil, in the basement. with a cheap shirt on that’s got BALTIMORE bedazzled on it. they take the hint.

by coincidence andrews group is the closest, renee is right behind (due to her group and andrews having the rendezvous)

dan’s group is a bit further away from neil but they’re getting there Fast 

(all of them regret letting renee leave alone and are worried about her, so they go after neil thinking renee will probably be onto him too)

-

renee is Definitely after neil. she doesn’t know if andrew will keep him and doesn’t think it’s likely that dan’s group will go after him. either way she doesn’t want him to end up alone.

andrew is positive that dan’s group will be after neil and genuinely can’t be bothered to deal with their large group so he just wants to snatch neil + immediately make a run for it with renee

IN SHORT, all of the foxes are Very close (andrew’s group are travelling by maserati, dan’s have multiple cars, renee’s are train surfing or something of the sort)

so yes it becomes a race

nicky: the Who Gets The Pretty Boy First Race, or WGTPBFR for short.

aaron, newer than nicky and still sensitive: you watch a guy die and all you think about is how hot he is?

nicky, old as fuck and dead inside: did you see him, aaron? he was Yummy. Scrumptious, even—

andrew: what other reason is there for us to be going after him.

aaron and nicky: wait. wait what-

dan’s group with their 5 cars: (fast and furious soundtrack plays in the bg)

katelyn overtakes seth and he curses violently at her. she grins and sticks her hand out the window, flipping him off as she zooms past. seth decides that he will most definitely throttle her as soon as they reach baltimore

allison is at the front ofc there is no overtaking her.

matt and dan are in the back just in case someone crashes. again.

renee is trying very hard to be nice to these two french speaking bastards but God is testing her

kev: ok seriously how old are you

renee: i don’t know :)

kev: it is not POSSIBLE for you to be so old that you dont even know!!

jean: honestly how do you expect us to trust you if you wont even tell us—

renee: i honest to fucking God do not know :)

kev and jean, freaking out: stop LYING—

their group has been jumping trains and buses for like a week and a half. renee is at her wit's end. she feels like a tired mother driving a car while her two kids have violent tantrums in the back.

so ! andrews group is maybe one hour away. renee is three. dan is nine.

neil is sitting very still in a gas station bathroom.

someone knocks three times. neil unlocks the door. he’s handed a bag of clothes.
