also there were so many death flags waving around varric in that prologue...........................if he dies i am going to be inconsolable. but he looks so tired. he's seeing history repeat itself. he watched anders destroy himself and didn't do a thing to stop it. (in some worldstates) he watched hawke stay behind in the veil and couldn't save them. he's been through hell and back so many times. you don't see any approval changes for him in that gameplay. party control is locked in the prologue. he's so mentor-coded in that intro, as if he's going to be passing the torch to rook and sacrificing himself......im already upset thinking about it bioware why would you DO THIS TO ME

Personally a combo of Bruce was severely traumatised as a child watching his two parents be murdered in front of him to the point he literally can not watch someone die in front of him without it triggering him and he knows himself well enough to know that if he can justify killing one person then he can justify killing another and he's sure he will not have the self control to stop once he gets started
