finally saw maleficent 2: 2 many maleficents

verdict: it good. but also dumb, but still good because i was thoroughly entertained. 

spoiler time,

lots and lots of cgi. lots of disney waving its huge multi-million dollar budgets around. real actors faces mo-capped onto animated characters still = bad. the blue fairy straight up dies.

Angelina jolie. up there, killing it. once again. at least 5 new outfits, 1 of which was decorated with bird skulls in place of a collar. 1 sexy wounded gauze outfit. 1 sexy showing-a-lot-of-skin-for-being-a-battle-outfit one. 1 tastefully unsymmetric goth mother of the bride outfit, and she is making it work. powerful. every time maleficent comes on screen its like YEEEESS. maleficent is the ultimate female power fantasy antihero and everything she does is a big deal, i love every second of her on screen. 

but then, whats this? more maleficents? yes, thats right, its sleeping beauty expanded universe deep lore time. there are many maleficents, from all over the world, except now they all live together in a secret nest/cave/forest thing. it is very funny to watch the actors move because they are all real people who had to pretend that they had huge wings on their backs and act tough at the same time. they do a lot of shoulder flexing. they also feature one of my biggest pet peeves for fantasy races: claiming a race that looks completely human with a few add-ons for aesthetic reasons has evolved from something that is not an ape. in this case, a really big bird. =___=. i can forgive it when they do the pheonix reborn from the ashes thing with maleficent and we get what feels like a full 10 minutes of actors staring into angelina jolies giant cgi bird face. 

the 1st new maleficent we see saves maleficent prime from the see after she gets shot. we get a glimpse of his dreadlocks and suddenly i am filled with the revelation of who maleficents mandatory straight romance should be with: bird man idris elba. obviously, obviously, obviously. Alas, it is not him. but it works out for the best because not only have the movie people decided staunchly to not give maleficent a romance plot, but he also fucking dies. if they had got idris elba in on this franchise as a dark fae and KILLED HIM OFF, i would be PISSED!! as it stands i am still miffed.  

which reminds me..... yall..... yall need to stop. before i watched this movie i thought they were seriously going to have maleficent end up dating her pet crow butler. they still might be building to that if we ever get a maleficent 3, but jesus fuck just let me have one..... just one where theres 2 main m/f characters who could potentially date but just fucking dont, ok? GOD im so sick of it, and this is fantasy, right? anything can happen, right? right?????? they didnt give maleficent a romance but they still had to give it to some random b-characters at the last minute as well as to fem!sonic the hedgehog and a cgi mushroom.

speaking of the bird butler though, hes in it again as mostly comic relief this time. i wish they'd do more with the fact that he is in fact, a regular bird. they did some, but when he is in human form he seems to have all the trappings expected of the average human including knowing what table manners during a fancy dinner are. but p good. + they added some kind of prosthetic/cgi to his nose to make it look pointier. lol. 

auroras actor also up there.... killing it..... really good acting.... a lot of it had to be with green screens but i was feeling it. good job A+ acting, did tear up when she thought her mom burst into flames. 

warwick davis also in it as a non-cgi pixie. really weird choice i thought, because that makes him look nothing like all the others, but i guess being gci would be a dead giveaway? also he locked up innocent fairies and did experiments on them to find the best way to kill them. at the end they try to give him a redemption arc, but its like..... youre a war criminal......

and thats most of my thoughts on that.
