I know I just answered a lot of book asks but, in the tradition of my 2023 book post, here are the best (lots!) and the worst (also lots!) books I read this year

READ THESE BOOKS:

Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe - I spend a lot of time thinking about the past. Not my past per se but the invention of the past, the legacy of it, the traditions of memory, how we create the past, how we invoke it, how we justify it, how we transform it into now. That's what this book is really about, via taking a thorough look at the history, wreckage, and legacy of British Imperialism and the IRA on Northern Ireland. Let the dead rise up and speak.

We Keep the Dead Close: A Murder at Harvard and Half a Century of Silence by Becky Cooper - And what if the dead did rise up and speak? Would it matter? Or would we carry on inventing narratives about them to serve our purposes? This book is about the murder of an archaeology doctoral candidate at Harvard in the 1960s; this book is about how to define and interpret the past when the silence is your biggest archive, and the problems that lay within. I loved this book so much. It meanders--let it. I recommend the audiobook. Take a drive.

Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - where are my disillusioned leftists exhausted by decades of in fighting and ever increasing political stakes? where are my organizers who rally around any cause? where are the people who go watch sports and come away thinking about concussions and race and the economy? where are the people who are seriously for real interested in abolition but want to know what we'll do with rapists and pedophiles and other people they think deserve to be or should be in prison? read this book.

I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai - razor sharp contemporary fiction taking a long, thorough look at true crime. God I have missed books like this--tightly plotted, detailed, using the past to look at the present and the present to look at the past, elegant subplots, an absolute unpredictable domino effect of wonderful sentence after wonderful sentence building into a crescendo. I also love this book taking the salacious appetite we have for true crime and applying them to a fictional narrative that feels so true to life and then turning around and taking the ethical misgivings we have about true crime and exploring that side of it. I also read Makkai's other book, The Great Believers, which is a book about memory and about the aids crisis, and it fucking slapped.

Murderbot series by Martha Wells - I get up, I go to work, I observe the horrors, I think about my favorite tv show to survive the horrors. I'm not an autistic Security android using my favorite space soap opera to get me through dangerous and boring missions investigating mysteries and almost certain death while protecting my friends, arguing with my girlfriend favored allied robot ship, and shoving my drones into people's faces to study their micro expressions but, well, we can't all be perfect. Anyway SecUnit is My Favorite and it should get to have more drones as a little treat.

Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin - Giovanni's Room is your last meal. You know why you're here. We know why you're here. A man will die tonight. It is not the narrator, and that is the cruelest thing about it. David would rather die. But he will live, staring into the window, imagining the last moments of his beloved, and all the while living at a hands length beyond himself, as if removed, as if watching the scene. This is what it means to live in a society where survival means denying your ability to love and feel openly. You are devastated. You are bowled over by god's most perfect sentences. Why are you crying? We have only finished the first chapter. There are 200 pages to go.

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters - if you like gorgeous prose; people being idiots you will none the less feel deep tenderness towards; drama queens; people trying to figure it out; messy relationships; gossiping with your bestie over brunch; looking back at your youth going jesus christ how did I not know?--read this book.

Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törz - I just loved this so much. I just. I love lush hyper expressive very descriptive prose. I love beautiful details. I love beauty. I love fantasy and mysteries and painful families of origin. I love that everyone is bisexual. I love when magic is tied to blood, as in, you will bleed for it. I loved this book!!!! I am always happy to see fantasy get the MFA treatment!!!! You can tell this book was revised to within an inch of its life!!!!!

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel - Aren't grizzly bears cute? Also they have been known to kill people, but seriously, so cute, right? I mean they can't kill everyone, just the stupid people, right? So if you're smart about it you're fine. It's fine. Seriously, it's fine. Why are you crying? Anyway this book is for: historical fiction girlies; aspiring screenplay writers; improv fans; lawyers; people who like to shop. I also read Bring Up the Bodies which was a great sequel except that [spoilers]

No Good Men Among the Living by Anand Gopal - this was an incredibly good narrative nonfiction examination of invasion of Afghanistan post 9/11 and how the US just bungled it in every single way possible. I was young when 9/11 happened so I didn't have a great understanding of our foreign policy but this does an amazing job of examining the conflict through the eyes of several people: a taliban commander, a US backed warlord, and a village housewife just trying to survive in the middle of things. God. This book haunts me. I think about it constantly. Gopal is fearless and an amazing writer.

Honorable mentions: Damnation Spring by Ash Davidson, which is about corporate greed, logging, and agent orange (didn't like the ending though), Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe (the tale of the family behind Purdue Pharma. Made my skin crawl.), Funny Story by Emily Henry (girl moves in with the ex of the girl her ex left her for. You'll never guess what happens next), The God of the Woods (girl from a wealthy family who already had one kid vanish vanishes at the summer camp they run. Pandemonium ensues), Starling House (southern gothic fantasy book, crazy good).

books that I didn't vibe with:

The Hunter by Tana French - this was so. Storygraph tells me I took something like 167 days to finish this book (audiobook). That is how bad this book was. Reviews are like omg well it's not a typical mystery but it's an amazing slow burn--NO. No it isn't. A murder mystery is one where the solving of the murder is the entire plot. That is the genre. That is the framework--the purpose--of the book. That is not what this is. And any moral complexity, any character depth, any of that is fucking gone from French's work. Where is the self assuredness of In the Woods? Where is the wrestling with ones conscience? Why is Marv Lavin, who is one of my favorite slippery guys, barely dodgy in this book? God what a disappointment! Fire the editor. Find a new genre. Move on.

Familiar by Leigh Bardugo - look I love Bardugo's work, I do, but the pacing issues are becoming impossible to ignore. It was very noticeable in Hellbent and it hit me in the face in this book. And then the deux ex machina at the end? I mean. Look. This just was not it. Beautiful details though. Very original magic system. There's a lot of good stuff here but structurally? No.

House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas - *rubs temples* where to start? it's difficult to choose since it was 951 pages. This should have been 2 separate books. I just. 951 pages and I didn't even get elriel crumbs from the fucking cross over event of the SJM cinematic universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway I read this, it's not good. There are so many arcs that could span multiple books shoved in here and compressed into one (1) single book. The problem with these very successful famous authors is that no one says no to them. It's troubling. Art has become content.

Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs - lmao. I have been reading this series since high school and that's why I read this. I think I'm done. That's how bad this was. I've never had a plot explained to me by the protagonist so thoroughly instead of getting to discover clues with the protagonist, which is how I thought a mystery was supposed to work. Apparently not.

The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff - I've blogged about this book at length but basically on every single level this was a no for me, and so over hyped

Graveyard of the Pacific + The Man They Wanted Me to Be - two books that supposedly examined toxic masculinity but were actually just memoirs about dudes mixed in with other stuff. For the first book it was the history of the mouth of the columbia river, for the second book it was the trump presidency. Anyway.

okay!!! I also reread the entire Kate Daniels series + all spin offs this year and all Emily Henry Books and started a lot of audiobooks I couldn't focus on because I was having medical issues. What a weird uneven year. Let's do better in 2025.

ok Keeper fans, I want yall to give me all your headcanons about Sophie and her friends (including Stina) that might fit a human au

the brainrot is real and I'm writing fanfiction for the first time in 12 years and it's a human, college au (tho the setting isn't exact, they're gonna visit Everglen and the college is gonna be Foxfire but other than that I think I'm gonna leave it up to imagination if this is a world where the elven cities exist as human cities, like a random human city called Eternalia, or if they don't exist at all). It's sokeefe, with maybe some dexiana in the background. I have some ideas but I need more info to fully pad their characters (imagine two hands filling a Sophie Foster stuffie)

For Sophie I'm keeping her fashion sense mostly t-shirts, jeans and sneakers. Not super baggy but also not form-fitting. Kinda like, baggy tshirt tucked into straigh leg jeans vibes. Not super colorful either. She still doesn't feel comfortable standing out.

I remember in book 1 she was listening to rock so pls recommend rock bands (I'm more of a vibe girly so I'll listen to whatever has a good sound and dont follow many artists/bands themselves so I only know like the 70s-80s classics and some random songs I think are cool, like Seven Nation Army and How Far We've Come), but I dont want to make her feel like a pick-me/im-not-like-other-girls so I kinda want to make her like pop too. And I already decided she likes the Deadpool movies (bc Amy has an X-Men tshirt in Nightfall, and Sophie makes a Rogue reference), but also romcoms. Also I'm thinking her and Stina would be in college to become vets

Biana is ofc a girly girl, I'm imagining mostly skirts and dresses, some jeans every once in a while, but also very stylish, idk about shoes tho, pretty sure in canon she wears heeled boots everywhere, but irl heels are tiring so...maybe sandals? I also imagine her as more of a pop girly with an edgy side in both music and movies, bc in canon she's not a damsel in distress, so I'm imagining she's an Olivia Rodrigo fan (not saying that Olivia is edgy...idk if she's edgy, I like her music but I wouldnt dare define it, she just popped into my head, as I said, I dont follow artists that much), and she would like both romcoms and action/spies movies (bc vanisher). I'm not sure about her major, I read a fanfic where she was a fashion designer and I like that, I was also thinking maybe art bc I just read a post that talked about how she painted over Tam's mom's painting in Nightfall. I know in the US she could do both but idk

As for the boys...I have no idea. I'm thinking Dex as a mechanical ingenieer (the spanish, french and english are all mixing in my brain and completely jumbled that word, sorry if its written completely wrong) bc ofc, technopath. Keefe as an art student, also he likes Deadpool too, and both beer and fruity drinks, and he still has Mrs Stinkbottom but I have nothing else on him, besides keeping his daddy and mommy issues ofc. Fitz I have no idea.

The rest of the gang I'm not sure if it's going to appear (I'm still trying to think if I should give Fitz a partner, and who would it be in that case), Tam might be mentioned tho, as the quiet fourth roommate of Dex, Keefe and Fitz, who doesnt like to mingle at parties much. But I'll be thankful for any headcanons you can give me of any member of the gang. Or facts that could be useful in a human au

This was longer than I expected, I'm sorry

I just went to see the Barbie movie for the second time and I’ve been wondering how the KOTLC gang would react to it so here’s my thoughts.

Keefe: He ordered an ‘I am Kenough’ sweatshirt before the credits even finished. He definitely says that Ken is literally him. He memorized Ken’s entire song and of course he used his mimicking skills to do it in Ryan Gosling’s voice. Secretly, it was hard for him as an Empath to watch the movie, especially with Sophie and her strong emotions sitting next to him.

Sophie: She thinks it’s an absolute masterpiece and 100% cried during the Billie Eilish song “What Was I Made For” given her own past with the Black Swan. Since none of her friends truly understands what it means to be human, she called Amy that night and they chatted about it for hours. She would definitely sneak out to the Forbidden Cities to see it again with Amy.

Fitz: He has had some experience with Barbie during his trips as a kid trying to find Sophie so he vaguely understands the importance of the movie. He respects it even though he didn’t relate to it. He pretends he understands the confusing human jokes despite the fact he doesn’t get it at all.

Biana: She totally fell in love with all the different fashions and tried to recreate some of the outfits afterwards. She found the human interpretation of mermaids hilarious when she saw mermaid Barbie. She was shocked by the treatment of women in the real world and had to ask her mom about it later.

Dex: He was forced to take the triplets with him so he spent most of the movie trying to get the three of them to stay in their seats. His favorite character was Allan and he broke into an ATM machine later so he could go buy an Allan doll. He noticed Sophie was sad after the movie so he dyed Iggy the Barbie pink color the next day to cheer her up.

Tam: He insists that he hated it and the pink gave him a headache but truthfully enjoyed the musical numbers and secretly added all the songs to his playlist. He will also put the songs on blast whenever he visits his parents to piss them off. Linh forced him to buy her a Barbie right after the movie.

Linh: She liked it and was very amused by the fake waves on the beach. She was disappointed to hear that the pooping dog Barbie toy was discontinued since she desperately wanted to buy it. She found some Barbie inspired pet outfits to force poor Princess Purrfins into later, with Tam’s reluctant help.

Marella: She loved all of it, especially the cute Kens. Dex helped her hack into the human Internet afterwards so she could read about all the drama behind the scenes. She spends an entire ability lesson with Fintan talking about it, much to Fintan’s disdain.

Wylie: He thought it was very thought provoking and Maruca teases him when he tries to analyze the deep symbolism of the movie with her. He decides to take an intensive human studies class after watching it and sees that there may be more to humans than he thought. Like many others, he cried over the idea of his mom being just a girl at some point in her life.

Maruca: She added a pink streak to her hair for a week afterwards. She really liked the Barbies’ blunt honesty during the Nobel Prize scenes. She later tried to make a smaller version of the pink Barbieland heart border with her Psionipath ability for fun.

Stina: She’ll tell Sophie it was a dumb human movie but genuinely enjoyed the human world scenes the most. She really related to Sasha the most.

Elwin: As the only adult who attended, he got the tickets for everyone, held seats, and made sure everyone had popcorn. His favorite character was weird Barbie and wants to start remodeling his house like hers. He joins Dex and buys as many Barbies as he can hold to take back to the Lost Cities. It was hard for him to watch as a doctor when Ruth said “Humans only have one end.”

“I am not that clumsy!” Sophie basically shouts out of annoyance,

“We once watched you almost trip on your cape and as you were falling you tripped again on the air around you,” Biana responds, “I didn't even know that was possible before I met you,”

“Ok that did happen, but I hadn't slept in days, so it wasn't my fault,” Sophie tries to defend herself,

Stina makes a face, “You hardly ever sleep, that's not a valid argument,”

“Or does that mean I’m always tired, so I always have an excuse? Maybe the trauma is finally helpful for once,”

“No, you’ve gotten pretty good at being functional without sleep, plus I’ve seen you right after a good night’s sleep and you still trip,” Dex says not helping at all,

This specific post-Team Valiant meeting was not going according to Sophie’s plan at all, they had all ganged up on her as they were walking out to the Council Hall, and she tripped on a rock. They had carried on even after they had gotten settled in their “Fancy Hangout House” as Keefe had dubbed it.

Just thinking about her boyfriend summoned him apparently because all of a sudden, he was knocking at the door,

“Ooo Sophie your boyfriend is here,” Biana taunted, she had always been their biggest fan and the most annoying person regarding their relationship,

With the loving taunting as background noise, Sophie opens the door welcoming Keefe into the room pulling him over to one of the couches without saying anything,

“The Lady Foss-Boss is really coming out in you right now,” Keefe says as he lets himself be pulled around like a rag doll,

“You don't have a single thought going on behind your eyes when they're on Sophie do you?” Stina asks watching Keefe,

“Nope,” Keefe responds confidently,

“At least you’re self-aware,” she mutters,

Sophie and Keefe share a look holding back laughter,

“Well definitely one of us is self-aware,” Keefe says slyly,

“You’re talking about how it took me forever to realize I had a crush on you, right?” Sophie nudges him,

“Oh of course,” Keefe smiles, “Who else would I be talking about?”

“I am going to kill you” Sophie transmits with a smile on her face,

“I would die a happy man,” Keefe responds,

Wylie coughs as Biana rolls her eyes,

“We may not be able to hear you, but we can see you two obviously flirting in your heads,” Biana says,

“You have no idea what goes on in our heads, we are very complex individuals,” Keefe nods,

“This reminds me that Sophie is part horse,” Stina adds,

“How! How did that remind you of that?” Sophie exclaims,

“It’s my favorite fact about you, it always makes me laugh. It's the reason I’m able to be around you,”

“I have so much blackmail that I could use right now, you’re lucky I’m a good person,” Sophie snarks

Stina looks horrified, she opens and closes her mouth at least twice before giving up on speaking all together,

Biana just stares in wonder at the rare sight of Stina’s silence, “What do you have on her?” she asks, “I have never seen her this silent before,”

“Oh shut up,”

“There’s the Stina we all know and love,” Dex says, eyes widening and avoiding Stina’s entire body. Stina’s cheeks start to blush and one of her hands starts tapping against the side of the chair,

Sophie feels Keefe’s hand bumping against her side and takes that as a hint to enter his mind, “I think I can feel their hearts about to beat out of their chests,” he transmits,

“They are hopeless,” Sophie responds, “And adorable, I’m rooting for them,”

“You’re not the only one, we should make posters,”

“That say what? ‘Stinex’s number one fans?” she asks,

“Yes, exactly that, it's almost like you can read my mind,” Keefe jokes,

Sophie smiles, “Almost like I’m reading it right now,”

“At this point, I’m just going to stop asking because you all confuse me,” Biana says annoyed, looking around the room. Stina and Dex are still avoiding looking at each other while Sophie and Keefe are cuddled on the couch,

“Sorry,” Sophie tells her sparkly best friend,

“I’m only partly sorry,” Keefe says in return, “I’m quite bad at owning up to my actions, but I will repay you in quick-witted comments in the future,”

“It’s days like these where I wonder why I’m friends with you guys,” Biana says smiling,

“When did you know you liked Keefe?” Stina asks after taking a sip out of her juice. She had called Sophie a couple of days ago asking to get lunch and be able to talk a little bit without being observed by all their friends.

So now they were in Atlantis trying to find a restaurant they could both agree on, which meant they were mostly walking around the underwater city and vetoing each other’s ideas,

“I guess I didn't fully know until right before we kissed” Sophie admitted, “That doesn't mean that’s how everyone feels at the beginning of their relationships though, I was in denial for a long time, but Keefe knew how he felt for years before we ever got together,”

Stina looks surprisingly vulnerable, “But what made you confident enough to tell him?”

“It just got to the point where I couldn’t take having him not know how I was feeling or what I was thinking anymore,” Sophie says, “I had overthought every possible thing up until that moment where his lips were on mine. But I had the extra add-on of my crush running away from everyone and everything he knew before I confessed,”

“Only half of your response was helpful,” Stina sighs, “and even when you’re being helpful it feels weird. You basically just said that the only reason you’re dating Keefe is because you annoyed yourself into telling him you were in love with him,”

“Who said anything about love?” Sophie smiles, “I think you Stina Heks are starting to become a romantic,”

Stina starts to look horrified which Sophie is starting to get used to, “There is absolutely no possibility that I ever become, that word,”

“Wow, you can’t even say it! I think we may have another Great Oblivion on our hands,”

“Stop enjoying this so much!”

Sophie is in the middle of laughing when she spots two teenage boys walking closer and closer, “Oh I don’t think that will be happening any time soon. Look over there,”

“You have got to be kidding me,” Stina says under her breath after she sees their friends notice them,

“Oh, hey girls, fancy meeting you two here,” Keefe says genuinely surprised,

“Did either of you have something to do with this?” Stina whispers,

“No, I seriously didn't know they were going to be here,” Sophie whispers back so only Stina can hear,

Luckily Dex looks as terrified as Stina does so there is a very small chance of him noticing this very obvious conversation, “What are you guys doing here? Not that you can’t be here! You are your own people that deserve to be anywhere whenever they want to be,” He spurts out anxiously,

“Smooth dude,” Keefe comments,

“We were trying to find somewhere to eat, do you guys want to join us?” Sophie asks as she ignores Stina’s glare,

“I think we’re go-” Dex starts as Keefe interrupts him, “That sounds amazing,”

“Perfect where should we go?” Sophie asks before Stina or Dex can come up with an excuse to leave, “Stina is picky so it's taken us forever to find a place,”

“What about that sandwich shop that I took you to last month? Plus, it's super customizable so Stina will have to find something edible there,” Keefe walks around Dex’s frozen body to Sophie so he can take her hand in hers,

“I think that is a great idea, Stina, Dex? How do you guys feel?” Sophie says as she leans into her boyfriend,

“Fine,” Stina grumbles as Dex seems to realize he hasn't been functioning like a normal elf and just simply nods along, Sophie smiles as she pretends the others are genuinely excited about the next few hours of their lives, “Yay, this will be great!”

“Ok, this place is pretty good,” Dex mumbles as he continues to inhale half of his sandwich,

“I told you I have the best date spots,” Keefe exclaims after stealing another slice of something that looks like a pink yam but tastes like French fries off of Sophie’s plate,

The tips of Dex’s ears turn bright red at the comment and Sophie can guess how that topic came up before they ran into Stina and herself,

“I still refuse to believe that Keefe is actually good at being a boyfriend,” Stina complains even though her plate is near-empty,

“As someone with first-hand experience,” Sophie starts, “I can definitely disagree with you,”

“Foster, are you complimenting me?” Keefe asks with sarcastic surprise, his hand coming up to clutch fake pearls,

“Yes love, I am. You would think after three years you would have gotten used to it,”

“Nope, maybe keep trying,” he smiles,

“I can’t figure out if I find this adorable or nauseating,” Dex says putting down his food for the first time,

Stina looks equally disgusted but not any more than normal, “I’m going with the second option,”

“You two don’t get to have an opinion about this,” Sophie almost laughs, “They are borderline hypocrites,” she transmits to Keefe,

“I don’t think that’s a thing,” Keefe says out loud causing both Dex and Stina to look at him confused,

“I think you forgot to clue us into part of this conversation,” Stina tells him,

“Forget that part, it doesn't matter right now,” Sophie waves her hand in the air as if pushing the conversation away,

Dex ignores the handshaking, “I thought you were trying to keep fewer secrets between us?”

“I’ll stop when you guys stop,” Sophie says, enjoying her friend's embarrassment, “I have no clue what you’re talking about,” Stina manages to squeak out,

Sophie and Keefe only look at each other in response trying not to laugh at their friends.

“You guys are hilarious, one day we’re going to look back on this and laugh about it with Sophie and me,” Keefe chuckles,

“I hate you,” Stina grumbles, and Sophie is sure she can hear Dex whisper his agreement,

C H A P T E R 1: Hails and cute smiles

Sophie's POV:

My eyes suddenly flew open to the sound of my Imparter ringing. A horrible, loud noise.

        I groaned in my bed, still half-asleep, as I turned to the side of the mattress, wanting to go back to sleep.

        I smiled while the noise faded away before closing my eyes once again, too lazy to stand up this early in the morning.

        Out of nowhere, I sat up.

        What if it was a call from the Back Swan?, I thought, panicking.

        Are the Neverseen coming back?

        Or maybe was it the Council wanting to talk to the gang and I?

        A million other questions seemed to cloud my mind, but I decided to brush them all away.

        The sound of my Imparter ringing echoed once again in my large room. I snatched the small Elvin Gadget from my Bedside table to see the words 'MY BOYFRIEND 💙' painted on the screen.

        My eyes widened, at the same time as I was smiling, which must have been a mortifying sight with the Gulon's nest that was my hair.

        I pressed on the screen to answer the Hail to see Keefe Sencen's sharp and handsome features light up the Imparter's surface.

A smirk illuminated his face as soon as he saw me.

"Hey Foster! Your hair is just a little-" he started, though he didn't get the chance to finish his sentence because I cut him off.

"That's because you just woke me up! It's like..." I whined, pausing to look at the time on the Imparter. "8:30 A.M. Don't you know I have sleep problems?"

        Keefe ran a hand through his cute blonde hair, making it even messier than what it had been seconds before.

"Oh, well about that..." he said, shifting uncomfortably.

        Ah, for once, I was the one to make him speechless. Though I didn't really understand why he was so nervous about talking to me.

Was he not comfortable with me anymore?

Was he thinking about his mom again?

        Keefe wasn't the same anymore ever since our victory against the Neverseen. His smirk wasn't as present on his lips as before, and he joked less often. He hadn't moved from his father's house, but was planning on it, saying he couldn't stand it anymore.

        Once again, deciding to brush those thoughts away, I smiled at my cute boyfriend.

"Anyway: Hey Keefe, how are you?" I asked him.

"I'm doing good, uhm, do you think you would like to go to come over to the Shores of Sadness to, uh, go to this beach. I just found it, and I thought you might, uhm, like it.         His eyes looked shocked, but his features relaxed into a smile.

Snap out of it Sophie! He's talking to you, and you're not even listening. What kind of girlfriend are you?, the voice asked sternly, slapping its forehead.

        My eyes refocused on the cute blonde boy who was speaking.

"...so I guess 6:30 P.M is alright." he finished, asking a silent question with his eyes. Please say yes? they seemed to plead.

"Sure, though I'll have to ask Edaline if I can stay there that late." I told him.

        Keefe nodded.

"If she says no, we can always re-schedule." he said. He waved his hands nervously before adding. "If you want to, of course, I don't want to force you or anything-" 

"Keefe." I interrupted calmly.

"Yes? Oh, sorry, I should've-" he asked, stuttering.

        He was so nervous, it looked like a Squishie panicking, and it was simply adorable.

"Now look who's the one who's cute when they're worried. Of course I want to go there with you. And Edaline will be okay with it, I'm sure of it. And even if she didn't say yes, I would still come." I said reassuringly, which hopefully didn't come out wrong.

        He seemed to relax, and a grin was plastered on his lips.

"Well, just let me know when you can come, because I need help with my diabolical plan. It's going to be even bigger than the Great Gulon Incident." he said absent-mindedly, rubbing his hands together with a mischievous expression on his face. 

"Wow, that's impressive! Want to tell me about that Great Gulon Incident so that I can compare the two?" I asked, trying to find a little bit more about it.

        Years in the Lost Cities, and I still hadn't found out about it. Something always seemed to come in between it and me, as if it was the Universe wanting to conserve my innocence.

"Foster, how could I tell you about it, if I have nothing to do with it, and the genius who planned it hasn't told me anything?" he asked, his smirk returning.

        I rolled my eyes, but the tugging at my lips that was forcing me to fight back a smile betrayed my amusement.

"Sure, Keefe, sure. Whoever it was a real genius." I said sarcastically.

        Keefe's eyes sparkled.

"I know right?" he asked, flipping his hair to the side with a head movement.

        After saying our goodbyes, I cut the hail off, and laid down on the bed, a big smile on my face.

        I really loved this guy.

Honestly I’m not a big fan of this episode. It’s okay, but definitely doesn’t stand out as much as it could’ve. I thought the plots were very weak and there were very few iconic moments. Considering that this was the first appearance of Knockout and Breakdown, it’s an underwhelming reveal.

Remember that scene where Sophie learns Squall has to remove someone's fingernails? What if I made that scene but instead of torturing the guy we just tickled him instead?

Keefe is a ler in every sense of the word. He's just too afraid he's gonna push a boundary he shouldn't. Though I do think Fitz and Sophie get him back. Often.

Remember that scene where Dex hates Fitz? (Yes like all of them), what if Dex got angry at Fitz for calling him Deck and wrecked him in front of the whole school (all of the girls are fawning over his laugh)

Remember how Dex and Sophie practiced alchemy in the cave in the first book? What if they got a little Distracted?

Remember when Sophie found Elementine (that one star she definitely was not supposed to find that only councilors are supposed to even know exist) and Dex came up behind her and reached his hands up to help her adjust the dials and stuff? Well, what if when he pulled back, his fingers brushed across her sides and she snapped her arms down and blushed? Of course, Dex would be worried at first, but he has 3 siblings. Shenanigans ensue.

Remember when Dex's siblings tease him over liking Sophie? What if they ganged up on him and tickled him until he admits it?

Remember how Sophie is Special? Imagine if she could telepathically tickle people and she gets bored in detention and tickles Keefe without touching him? And what if, later during PE, Keefe takes her behind the bleachers and wrecks the girl for making him Act Normal in front of that mentor? It's worth it though because Sophie gets brownie points with Sir Tiergan

Remember that scene where Sophie hugged Sir Tiergan and he kind of stiffened up? That's because Sir Tiergan is a Lee and he thought Sophie was gonna start tickling him.

keeper gang pulls a heist how successful do you think they are

I don't know much about heist type situations, but I'd say they... they tried. it'd be going good, they'd get what they're after, then something goes wrong. they get away safely though. probably.

they'd probably plan beforehand, pick positions and decide who's all going- it would just probably be the original 5 plus tam + linh, for efficiency. (im sorry 3/4 horsegirls + wylie + jensi)

sophie was difficult to place, cos she could probably do any major roll and it'd fit, but she's probably small enough to fit in the comically large heist vents, so she's making her way over to the goal that way.

dex does that thing he did with the buildings back in neverseen, so everythings a bit crazy, but the. guards? probably? and sensors are distracted so people can slip past. he's in the vents with sophie. crawling.

keefe's probably disguised as. one of the guards? depending on the kind of heist? because he has experience with pretending the be the "enemy" so he can pass decently with it- that way, he could also get close to see peoples emotions and know if they get caught that way.

Tam's wiggling his way over through the shadows, he's supposed to keep an eye on keefe so if he messes up, he can save him. they did not think that part of the plan through enough. he went into the vents as well.

biana's vanished obvi, making her way over as quietly as possible, she's probably the closest to the whatever they're getting, by sheer girlboss power alone. also vanishing.

linh is on lookout duty, she'll alert the group if there's trouble and is the backup plan if things go wrong. take that as you may.

Fitz is the getaway driver, when things inevitably go wrong, he's got the stupid big car ready with his foot already on the gas pedal. he would be going stupid fast and people would be screaming. he'd get the job done tho.

im thinking they get caught by either keefe being too sus and the guards going 🧐 OR one of the besties falls out of the vents on top of someone.

Kotlc collecting habits Pt.1

Basically what I think various kotlc characters (mostly the kids) would collect. other than prattles pins bc we all know everyone collects those so.

this is inspired by my own habits of picking random shit up and stuffing it in my closet.

Sophie: she doesn't rlly have the time to like exclusively go out and collect things she wants. I think she's rlly causal act what she keeps. if she see's a pretty rock? yoink. some nice smelling flowers? she'll pluck a few to maybe sundry when she's not busy saving the world lmao. I do think she would collect garden gnomes tho. Bc of mr. forkle's human house having the gnomes (the most weird or scary looking ones ofc, shoppes a weirdo 100%). It reminds her or her human past, and it also srsly weirds out like everyone who comes Havenfield which is is plus. Like just imagine a whole line of creepy ass gnomes lined up right outside havenfields entrance. She names them all too. they all human names ofc ofc. like bob. and carl. and other such things.

Keefe: I think he collects things based off of ppl if you know what I mean. Like he see's a bottle caps that reminds him of Sophie's exact eye color and adds it to his Sophie collection. Or if he see's like idk a purple rock that reminds him of like that one time Biana painted his nails the most vibrant and gaudy purple color she had, he adds it to his collection of things that remind him of Biana. maybe he adds little pieces of art he did for each person he collects stuff for. idk. Omg and maybe someday like he has all these collections and like the gang happens to fid out, and they start going through that shit. Keefe's so embarrassed and low-key scared they'll be mad, but they all love it. Fitz finally reunites with his long lost Bramble Jersey! Keefe immediately steals it back tho dw. he's such a people person fr. Especially bc of his empathy. He doesn't have collections for his parents. He used to for Gisela but when she was revealed to be a part of the never seen he showed her's into some dark corner of the house and hasn't looked back.

Biana: ikkkk ppl are gonna say that she collects hair pins and like jewelry and makeup and other stuff like that. And she does, She has an entire closet dedicated to dresses and shoes she has over the year. Like this is canonical. But her most prized and valued collection, is her stick collection. She has so many sticks. She has such stick fight vibes. She used to beat Keefe and fitz up with them. She organizes them by height. She lovingly pets them all. No one is allowed to touch her sticks. Biana = stick girl. One time when the gang was like idk practicing fighting with their bodyguards, she found the biggest most beautiful stick ever and literally screamed. No one knew why Biana, the girliest of girlies (said lovingly ily Biana) was so worked up over a stick. It's ok Biana, sticks r amazing fr.

Dex: I feel like before he became a techno path, he would collect like plant ingredients for different potions and elixirs needed at slurps and burps. He likes the idea of being useful, bc all his life he's been seen as a mistake. He's trying to prove his worth constantly. Kesler happened to ask him to get a like plant in front of a noble, and the noble complimented Dex on being such a good kid, so now he's like oh, I'm a good kid! which makes me so sad. But also he collects like useful things exclusively bc of the triplets. Like he can't bring shiny rocks or shells that he finds on the beach bc the triplets will get to it so fast that he won't even be able to like have a collection to adds things to. Instead, he collects pieces of scrap metal, herbs, wires, wood pieces, etc. so that he has the excuse of saying that this is material he needs for gadgets and elixirs and whatnot, so the triplets can't steal/break anything. he collects pens too( he is anti pencil).

Linh: Because of her being banshed for like 3+ years, I can't say that Linh is a big collector, neither is her brother. She didn't have the means to have things simply for enjoyment. Whatever little she owned went to keeping her and her brother alive and fed. It's hardcoded into to only take what she needs and nothing more bc of her previous life style. But now that she lives with Tiergan (NOT choralmere I REFUSE), I think she might start buying like little trinkets. Maybe stickers or small bracelets, or charms. keychains. Friendship necklaces. She would definitely buy lotttttts of excess things for princess purryfins. Like fancy collars, or little animal clothes. combs to brush her hair. Linh spoils her sm I swear. I wish is was Princess purryfins fr. I also think she would invest in a lottt of water proof clothing/goggles/etc. Like overly so. More than she needs. it's a way of calming her anxiety act her ability. Even if she messes up and loses control, at least she and everyone in Tiergan's house (I forgot what hi should is called) will stay dry. She hasn't fucked up completely.

Lil Pump 2 Album Review

Lil Pump is a rapper who rose to fame during the 2016 Soundcloud era of hip-hop with his hit singles "Gucci Gang" and "D-Rose" released in 2017. He gained even more attention with his debut album "Lil Pump," which featured many beloved acts such as Lil Yahty, Gucci Mane, even Chief Keef, and a collaboration single titled “I Love It” with Kanye West, released all the way back in 2018. However, he hasn't been in the media much since then, except for his controversial tweets and endorsement of Donald Trump in 2020. When news of a new Lil Pump album came out, I didn't expect much from it. In fact, my initial thought was that it would be the worst album I'd listen to. Unfortunately, I was correct. Now, it's time to review Lil Pump's latest record, "Lil Pump 2."

In my opinion, this record is one of the worst pieces of music I've ever listened to. It lacks creativity, it's irritating, and it's easily one of the most unpleasant media experiences I've had in the past few years. Typically, I try to start every review with something positive, but in this case, I can't seem to find anything redeeming about this album. The only thing I can say is that the production quality is okay, passable at best, but that doesn't excuse the terrible lyrics. The bars are simply awful, and every song feels incomplete. There are moments throughout the album where it seems like it might pick up, but Lil Pump's performance falls flat against the uninteresting instrumentals. Overall, it's not even something that could be improved with better production or lyrics. It feels like someone handed a middle schooler an iPod with a bunch of tracks from GarageBand and forced him to be the next Soulja Boy.

Despite his debut album having fun, interesting tracks, this simply doesn’t. It lacks so much character, and it hurts so much. There were countless times, listening to this album, that I wanted to break my headphones because I was in disbelief that someone who had some potential to make fun, interesting music simply didn’t. There simply isn't enough to talk about without sounding like I'm regurgitating the same points over and over. All I will say is that this album is lacking in general direction; it's bland; it's simply not an album.

oh noo, I fear you're gonna be disappointed 😖😖 the fic is not about them 👉🏻👈🏻 im not even sure if they would have appeared

it's actually a sokeefe fic that consumed my brain for -checks notes- four whole days, in which I wrote 8.4k words. I got inspired by this AU. I have actually mentioned it a little before in this blog, I asked for headcanons on what each member of the gang would study/wear/like, because it's a human!college!au, and I actually made a pinterest board with fashion inspo for Biana, Sophie, Keefe and Fitz lmao (you can check it out here if you wanna) and a spotify playlist for Biana and Sophie like those you can make with a friend where spotify automatically fills it with music according to the tastes of each of you

so basically my general idea was that Sophie and Keefe meet at a party where they make out and then the next day they bump into each other at Everglen for spring break. I was writing it on the go bc I hadnt written fanfiction in 12 years (something got into my brain last year and I had an idea for an Eragon fanfic, wrote like a page then got busy, and now this one) so I only had a vague idea of what I wanted to happen which was: make out/have sex at party so its real awkward the next day at everglen (I basically got to this point before the brainrot stopped), couple nightly accidental meetups bc neither of them can sleep, talk about their trauma??, have sex again??, and that was it 😂

but me being me, I got really into making it make sense. So the ~Lore~ I came up with was:

The Reuwens adopted Sophie and Amy after the Fosters died in a fire (cuz we gotta keep it in theme right?)

Jolie lives, and is happily married with Vertina. Fuck Brady (didnt think too much about what happened to him, but maybe he couldve gone to jail?)

Jolie is an adult and out of the house ofc, she's still 15 years older than Sophie

The Reuwens have an animal sanctuary, I was thinking horse sanctuary also inspired by another fanfic I read (but that one was a Haikyuu one)

Sophie drives an old pick-up truck, and Biana has a Suzuki Vitara Live (which she got to spite Luzia Vacker, who is her great-aunt and very conservative. It was a compromise, Biana wanted a Ram pick-up bc Luzia was all "ladies should only drive small cars" but Della and Alden got her to accept the Suzuki) (< that was inspired by my own experience with a family friend who wanted me to sell him my Renault Sandero Stepway and he would give me a Chevrolet Spark bc it was "better for girls")

Foxfire is a college

Sophie, Biana and Stina are roommates. They rent an apartment together (they're in third year, Sophie transferred to Foxfire in second year and got placed as Biana's roommate, who wasnt happy bc she hadnt had one before, but they became friends after helping each other with classes stuff)

Likewise, Fitz, Keefe, Dex and (I was still deciding if) Tam live together in a house (it's Cassius')

Sophie and Biana dont like Stina and she doesnt like them either

Sophie ends up going with Biana to Fitz and Keefe's party bc Stina goaded her about being boring, and then also ends up in Keefe's room to spite Stina

Sophie and Stina are both studying to be veterinarians (the college situation is a mix of how I know american colleges work and how they work in my country)

Biana I was thinking fashion design and/or art. Keefe also art

Also I got an anon after I asked for hcs that mentioned poli-sci/law for Fitz but also culinary so I was thinking he started poli-sci/law at Alden's behest (like Alvar) but then changed majors to culinary. I was thinking to give him and Biana issues with parental expectations and all that (but probably not super detailed)

Dex's major was mechanical ingeneering, and also he and Biana are dating

Also the reason Sophie was spending spring break with Biana and not the Reuwens was that Jolie and Vertina were in their honeymoon, and Grady and Edaline got excited so Sophie and Amy convinced them to go on their own couples trip, and then Amy made plans with her roommate so Biana invited Sophie to Everglen

No one knew Keefe was gonna go too. I was thinking he had a fight with Cassius about the party the morning after so Fitz told him to just go to Everglen with him

I think with the moon being related to he is because we don’t really know that much about it, or the universe, just like we can’t fully understand gender. We can try but they’re both just very very vast.

To answer your question about why the kids started dream sharing so young, it is mainly because of the trauma the three of them had gone through. This might sound like some really bad reasoning, but it is the reasoning for it according to some of my paper notes.

To elaborate, all three of the kids had suffered through some form of trauma, specifically with their abilities (not sure if I ever mentioned this or no but Tam manifested shortly before the dream sharing began but didn’t really realize it and so did Keefe) and a thing that can happen between soulmates is that if all soulmates had trauma, then they could start sharing dreams earlier than usual. This is to help both soulmates out, and is a sort of coping mechanism with your soul.

So it does have some to with Sophie’s abilities, but not entirely just her. The reason the kids don’t understand this is because of the fact that it’s pretty taboo.

Also, should clarify: one’s soulmate will be close to your age. However, not everyone gets romantically involved with their soulmate in real life, or even in dreams. Ex Alden and Quinlin are soulmates, but due to the views of the lost cities, they deny that they are soulmates to everyone and spend most of their dreams in silence for a long time. Or Elwin and Livvy, who are soulmates but are simply best friends for life. However, you do not need to be soulmates to be cognates.

I feel like you would write a platonic soulmate au and make the main gang soulmates for some reason. Like you do like the matching marks one. Feels like a thing you would do.

I suppose so, I just wonder what it is about the moon and space more specifically, because it's not the only field or area we don't fully understand. Perhaps its because it's also very present and visible, we can look up and see the moon and stars easily, but not say, all the atoms and particles composing us.

Also that makes sense! Trauma changes how your brain works and therefore how your dreamsharing works, I can follow that logic. Although I don't know if I would've realized the thing about it being connected to abilities as well. I was about to ask if the trauma had to be connected to their abilities, but realized probably not since dreamsharing doesn't seem to be a uniquely elven thing and other species don't have abilities. So it's probably just how it worked out for the three of them. Poor kids

The age thing makes sense as well, matches with what you wrote. And I do appreciate soulmate aus that acknowledge non-romantic connections, it's always nice to have that as someone without romantic attraction. And complexity in relationships! Alden and Quinlin deny their connection while Elwin and Livvy embrace it and have fun with it, there's so many different ways to have people in your life and I find soulmate aus are greatly enriched when they lean into that.

You're right though, a platonic/queerplatonic/non-romantic soulmate au that focuses on family is definitely something I would write. I actually don't know if I've ever written something explicitly romantic, nothing immediately comes to mind. I'm not against doing so, it's just not what I default to because it's not part of my personal experiences.

and yeah, biana also stopped pressing buttons, and in fact was the one who pushed alvar into the cubby in the first place

What makes the whole 'I stopped pressing buttons' scene so different from say: Keefe attacking his mother on Everest (because she was attacking Biana) is how much control Fitz was in. Yes his feelings towards his brother were justified, but is it not horrifying that Alvar was completely helpless in the pod, a non threat in the moment, and Fitz made the choice to let him suffocate while he pleaded for help? (His brother too! Who he at one point looked up to and loved, who I'm sure is impossible to de'humanize' completely in the moment of violence because of their shared history?) Thats like, an insanely cold move Fitz Vacker.

Idk you also brought up all the previous times he sparing Alvar a worse fate, but also, (respectfully, stressing that so hard) isn't murder, especially for an elf, the most extreme punishment? I don't think sparing Alvar is above the bar here, if rock bottom is Alvar's murder.

I also want to say that like, after the events that night, there was proof that Alvar could not be reformed. So there was reason to have hope that had he not died (or escaped) that night, he could have been thrown in exile or something. Non lethal fate. (But also idk, I say that but Fitz would have reason to not trust the Elvin Justice system)

Im rambling maybe? I don't want to say something like Fitz is a bad guy or a good guy cause I kinda hate that way of looking at characters. I don't think he should be condemned either because - he's not real - but what he did to Alvar is like, a very interesting and telling sign of where he, as an elf, is at psychologically. And is sometimes I think, overlooked, because theres such a focus on wether or not his actions were morally correct, or how they looked in comparison to his peers.

bro, how was alvar a non-threat? he was actively trying to release baby trolls, even after seeing how violent they were. and remember, Biana and Fitz didn't know what the buttons did. Fitz knew that there was a possibility that there was a drain, but he and Biana knew for sure that some of the buttons would free him and allow him to keep releasing baby trolls.

I also personally believe that actively trying to kill someone (you know, like chucking a goblin throwing star at them) is slightly worse than not taking action to (possibly) prevent someone's death. I fully support Keefe's decision to murder his parents, of course, but it's a little different.

Also, saying that you don't think he should be condemned because he's a fictional character is a complete cop-out. Yeah, sure, the actions of fictional characters don't affect the world, so enjoying or consuming media about morally fucked up characters is morally neutral, but you can absolutely still condemn the actions of fictional characters. You spent this entire ask very obviously condemning Fitz's actions, so own it. Don't just go "I think he's a cold-hearted murderer, but you know, I don't really want to make judgements about whether he's a good guy or a bad guy".
